I am cutting back on mileage, because i have a race this weekend. My pace was 7:08 with a one percent incline starting at 1.75 out of 5.00 miles. I want to try to simulate running on a road as much as possible. With one hundred sit ups. Also, I am not sure what to cut back to on my mileage. I was told by someone to cut back at least 75%of my mileage per week. Any suggestions?

Well the goal of a taper is to get to race day at your optimum level of conditioning, so definitely not much speedwork this week, and most would just say if you want to run do some slow 40 or 50 min runs is all. Also I have a lot of buds that do stride outs the night before in a parking lot to get the kinks out. I don't know, but for anything other than a marathon I think that tapering 75% is a bit excessive.

Thank You for the help, i never know how much to cut back. I have not heard about doing strides the day before but that sounds like something i would like to do. Also good luck on getting in the St. George marathon.

I agree that you don't really need a taper, especially if you are feeling fine and not worn down.

Hi Barry - I was the one that suggested 75% - and what I meant was cut out 25% not 50% as you suggested ... (opposite of cutting back 75% of your mileage) -- sorry about that misunderstanding.

If I were you, I would run no more than 40 mins on Tuesday, either run 30 mins or take Wednesday off, run 40 mins on Thursday including 5 x 25 sec strides (with 1` recovery jog) at the end of the run and run 30 mins very easy on Friday. Except for the strides, or the last mile of these runs, I would keep the pace either what you ran today (or slower if your stomach issues come back). Just think of these days as keeping your legs fresh - you will not gain enough fitness in these runs to help you on Saturday, you are just reminding your legs what it feels like to run.

Good luck ... Bonnie

Barry, What is the distance that you are racing this weekend? If it is a 5 or 10k you should just jog really easy for 2-3 days before the race. Not longer than 40 minutes per say. And yes, strideouts are ok up to a 30 seconds apiece or so. When I say easy I really mean easy ok?

It looks as if you are racing the half, in which case it's really important to have rested legs and body. One thing I want to discuss with you is slowing down the pace of your daily runs and increasing your base mileage.

Thank you for the advice. My problem is i think i am starting to feel tired on my runs, like i am running too fast. So i have hired a trainer to help me to become a better runner.

Bonnie,

I am sorry for the confusion. I know what you mean now. I will try the strides if I can. I had to get a EKG and blood work done today because I have been getting sick and chest pains. So I am going to talk to my trainer tomorrow and figure what the best thing for me is..

Take care Barry -- I am glad you have hired a coach, I see some great runs in your future!!!
