Hi Bill,

Although I'm not a caffiene fiend, I enjoy my cup of coffee in the morning and generally down a Coke in the afternoon. Yes, caffiene will affect your performance, at least it does mine. I usually intentionally down a flat coke or Mt. Dew at about mile 20 of a marathon for that extra shot of sugar and caffiene. Of course for us ultrarunners, caffiene is our best friend at 2am in a 100 mile race;-)

Bill during my whole running career-high school, college, and now I've always felt like pop should be a serious no no. When I'm drinking pop I feel way more sluggish than without. My personal performance goes way up when I'm not drinking soda. Its also said that carbination puts on fat. I think the fact is that if you just drink one pop a day for a year it will put on 10lbs.

So as you can tell I would say never, ever on the soda pop. Although if I wasn't trying to run marathons I'd be downing a Dr. Pepper right now.
