Wasatch and VA loop. I read an article today that I thought was relatable. I realized I haven't been enjoying running. In high school it was often the highlight of my day. Now it's an obligation, and I continue to let myself down. This article said that motivation is what gives you the push you need to work through pain, and is closely tied to enjoyment. If you don't enjoy running, why would you want to make yourself suffer? Honestly, I haven't truly enjoyed running for months. I used to look forward to workouts but I just don't anymore, unless it's a long run at a slower pace. I've felt guilty about this, because I labeled that as lazy. I'm becoming one of the people I despised in high school: those who don't work hard and waste their talents. And I hate it. I want to work hard, improve, and have fun. I'm finding it difficult to do so. The article labeled this as a burnout. Maybe I'm burnt out. Maybe that's my real problem. I kinda thought it was just a lame excuse for not working hard, but maybe it's a real thing. For right now, I guess I'll just look for ways to enjoy running. I won't bother with trying to meet some standard, I just want to be pleased with what I can accomplish.

Hey,

I havent been running as long as you, nor as fast...but I understand the feeling you describe. I think everyone battles with it at least once but the important thing is to enjoy running. Last time I felt as you do, I backed off a bit, took some rest days and did a lot of easy running. Any running, even easy will work your aerobic systems, so you can keep your fitness while you think things through. Im sure withing 3 weeks you will feel that competitive spirit resurface. Another thing, so many people are starting their running/weight loss journeys with this new year...perhaps helping them learn to run and be healthy will bring back the Joy the sport provides. Motivation is contagious. Have fun and RUN!

From Sarah Spiro on Sat, Jan 02, 2016 at 20:06:28 from 104.169.173.29

Hey Sarah, I totally went through that exact same thing during track season my freshman year, all the way through the summer too. It just really sucks, and I think that a big reason for it for me was that I was very used to being up front in workouts and winning or in the front pack at meets in high school. And it's hard when you transition to college and you usually don't get continued replenishment of your motivation by your success, you have to learn to have motivation just by the fun of running itself and personal improvement. For me, 2 things that would always re-spark my running love were to enter a fun little road race where you know you can do well and just enjoy a fun-spirited running community environment instead of the super serious realm of the NCAA. And then also to take a few days to run in new places, maybe the next town over or whatever, and explore a bit. Use your stopwatch instead of GPS. Stop and look at pretty things when you want. :)

I'm super sorry you're feeling burnt out!! It's 100% a real thing and you aren't at all being lazy. I'll be praying for your season! I'm rooting for ya, even over here across the country haha!

From Connor Baller on Sat, Jan 02, 2016 at 21:53:44 from 75.169.56.21

I'm not sure when your indoor meets start, if you are supposed to be training for them but if you took a couple days to cross train or just take totally off that would help. I took 2 weeks off after footlocker and I'm cross training this week so I have taken a good long break from running so when I come back I can be running and working hard till may. I like Sarah's suggestion of switching up where you run. It's always fun when we drive somewhere and go for a trail run or just run in a different city so the roads aren't as boring. Hopefully everything works out for you!

AM: 2.25 miles, breathing was hard but that's to be expected since it's my first day back and it's also higher elevation

PM: Warmups and form mile, then went for our run. It was 50%, we averaged 7:29. I had a rough time, probably because I haven't run for the past couple of days. I decided to take off a few days to see if my motivation would return, and I think it did help. I also talked to coach yesterday, he thinks it's because I haven't been seeing success lately. He told me to think about how my motivation would be if I were to run a 5:00 mile. I realized that then I would be a lot happier with running and it wouldn't feel like a chore anymore. He also told me to think back to my freshman year of high school, was running much fun then? It wasn't and I almost quit. I'm in the same situation here, but like back then deep down I know I will never quit because deep down I really do love it too much to let it go. So I've just got to endure through the tough times and eventually I will see results. Patience is key, I know my motivation will come back.

I felt much better today! I was surprised actually with our average pace once we finished because I felt like we hadn't pushed as hard as yesterday. But I guess yesterday was rough for everyone so... Anyway, glad to see I've still got it and maybe more than I realize. I am definitely feeling my motivation come back, and am actually getting excited for our first meet. I really hope I can make the traveling team for track! I am starting to believe I actually can! We did Hospital loop today, 7:15 average. I added on 2 more miles at 7:45 pace.

Workout was 20x400s, longest speed workout I have done. We split it up into sets of 5 starting out slower and progressively got faster with each set. I hit:

1) 89, 89, 87, 86, 88

2) 83, 83, 84, 85, 84

3) 82, 82, 81, 80, 81

4) 78, 78, 78, 76, 77

AM: 4 miles easy PM: Today coach said we could go easy and not to go too fast, which I was really excited about! It was farm run out and back. I felt alright, but I'm sore from yesterday. Though coach said we could go slow we still went 7:31 average, which I was a bit bugged about cause I was thinking we'd be going closer 8:00 pace. But you know it's ok I don't want to complain.

Today we did wmups, form mile, then did a mile warmup and started the 80%. We did 3.5 lps on the track, then went out on the road up to Home Depot where we finished. It i just over miles. I looked back to the last time we did it and it was shorter because we didn't run as long on the track. This time around I hit 21:32, 7:00 pace. It is all uphill and it was really windy today and we were going against the wind, so that made it difficult. Last time I averaged 7:06 and I believe the conditions were good, and I feel like I worked hard today. So I am happy with it. I maybe would have stuck on the front pack if I were to do it again, I was iffy about it this time because I didn't want to go out too fast and crash but I think if I could have kept up with the group I could have gone faster. My first mile was 5:44, then we hit the uphill and it slowed us down. But I'm satisfied with what I did and will just use it as a learning experience for the next time we do it. Afterward whistle hills on the hill by Chevron (the dirt hill ind Home Depot was now a mud hill).

Today was a really busy day and quite honestly I was just out of it. But you know, we all have those days. I had to cover my hours for study hall before tomorrow because we are traveling to the meet, and so I did that before the team meeting, then after the team meeting I wasn't expecting to have to fill out insurance info, so I ran out of time faster than I realized. Part of the probem was that I forgot that we had weights today, so instead of having 1.5 hours to run I had less than a half hour. Got in 3 miles then went to weights.

First collegiate track meet! Wasn't an awesome meet for me, but coach said to expect slow times. It's at 7000 ft elevation and its the first meet of the season.

AM shakeout mile

Warmup 1 mile, mile race, 1 mile cool down. 1 mile warmup, 3k race, 3.3 mile cool down.

Mile Race: I felt like I didn't go as fast as I could have, I relaxed maybe too much. Kind of felt like I was just running it, never really transitioned to competitive mode. I felt kind of lethargic for both races.

3k: My plan going into it was to find someone to stick to and not let them go. I was surprised when it went out slow. Just tucked behind Kaylee cause she was closest to me, and ran with her for 2-3 laps. It began to feel slow, I felt I could go faster. But told myself to wait, it would get harder. Then Brighton and another girl caught up, Brighton went right in front? Of Kaylee and the other girl kept going. She started to make a gap between us, that's when I said what the heck and surged up to her and tucked behind her. This pace wasn't too bad but was fast enough to make me push. With about 2 laps to go I mentally died because I didn't know how many more laps were left (same thing happened in the mile) and thought we had more than we actually did. Feel off the girl and Brighton caught me, then another girl, tried to go with. Ended up with 11:24. I was again disappointed with the time, but I know my inexperience contributed and I'm maybe still in XC mode. I need to work on mentality, everything else is there.

After the 3k my hip started to hurt, it doesn't feel like muscle pain it feels more like the joint. It warmed up on the cool down though.

Warmups, form mile. Then warmed up a mile. Workout was 5x1000s with 90 seconds rest. I got through 3 of them, then my hip started killing. On the 4th I did 500 meters then went straight to the training room. Haley says my hips aren't aligned properly. She reset them and told me to stretch, ice and take ibuprofen.

Had class right before practice, so I couldn't come early to the training room. I went there instead of doing warmups and Haley realigned my hip. Then got out in time to run like 200 meters and then do the stretches. Then did the form mile. Hip was bugging, especially on the turns. It would sometimes be a sharper pain than the ache. It wasn't super intense pain like my knee has been in the past. But I could feel that was favoring it. So Haley told me to get on the stationary bike. I biked for 40 minutes with Koi. Then did some stretches Haley showed me and afterwards she attached me to the STEM machine, felt weird and hurt for the first couple minutes but after that it felt good. Did that for 15 minutes. Hopefully my hip feels better soon.

Went to the training room before practice and Haley reset my hip. She said that if I didn't feel any pain on the warmup I could do the workout. Did the warmups and form mile and it was feeling alright. Felt a little discomfort but not pain. When splitting into groups Coach told me to just go for a run. I was a bit disappointed, I wanted to do the workout (it was a tough one today but idk I just wanted to do it). I won't be doing tomorrow's workout either because Coach said I have to go 2 days without pain before hopping back into workouts. It was probably smart though because I wouldn't want to make things worse by jumping into things too quickly. So I did 6 miles at 7:42 average. Was surprised actually with how much my hip has improved from yesterday.

Hip was feeling great today, I even said to Maddy when going into the training room "it doesn't feel like my hip is out today." Sure enough, Haley said it was in! I was stoked. Unfortunately I still had to go two days without pain before I could do any type of speed, so I was super disappointed when I found out they were doing the 6 minute test today. I had heard about it a while ago and was really looking forward to the day we'd be doing it. But it's okay we're bound to do it again sometime, it just sounded really cool. I did the warmups and form mile, and the warmups and cool downs. It was fun to watch!

Roommates woke me up to tell me campus was closed today because of road conditions! Best news ever. Coach later texted us to say that due to the snow and closure of campus, for one of the first times ever practice has been canceled. He then said if we try to run today be careful because the roads are packed but remember practice is canceled and you should take the day off. I originally planned on not running because the snow was coming down, but then it cleared up and I got sick of doing homework so I just decided to run. Now I see why coach gave us permission not to run. The roads are terrible. Found a road that wasn't nearly as bad as the rest, but coming back up it was going against the wind and I was still slipping a ton. What was probably 8:00 effort was actually 8:38 average.

Drove to Mesquite today, was really nice to get out of the snow. Warmups then a mile warmup and a couple strides. Workout was 800, lots of 400s, 800. I did it in trainers. We were supposed to hit the 800 in 2:50 or faster, I hit 2:50 exactly. Had 90 seconds recovery. Then the first set of 400s (4 in each set) was supposed to be 86-90s, I averaged 89. We had 30 seconds recovery after all the 400s. The next set was supposed to get faster, 78-86 I think? I hit the first two maybe then I just hit a wall, I couldn't go fast anymore and started hitting above 90s, hit a 97 and then did cool down cause I was just getting more and more discouraged. Did 16 laps (some in lane 7 and some on the grass on the inside) plus some. I'm just so frustrated with how slow I am right now.

Today was 50%, we did Cross Hollows to Airport. Felt pretty good actually, for once the pace didn't feel forced. Oh I slipped on some black ice which was a blast! My hip is a real trooper for taking all those hits. Speaking of which it was a little out of alignment today, but doesn't hurt. My hip flexor though is super tight.

Met with Coach today to discuss a few things, feel a lot better now. I think a big reason why I'm not doing well is that I expect too much of myself. I expected to be running PRs but in reality I have to adjust to the training. Coach said he's not worried about my slow times and assured me that I will get better with time I just have to be patient. Many people on the team I guess struggle their freshman year then go on to do great things by their senior year. I have a new appreciation for college running, its a lot more intense than I was expecting but I know that I will adjust eventually and when I do everything will click, and then I'll run crazy PRs.

I got to do speed today! And since I'm at 6 miles I no longer have to go to the pool :) Did the warmups and form mile, then 2 miles warmup. I could only do half of the workout because Clinton said he wants to bring me back into it slowly so we don't make things worse, but I was just happy I got to do some of it. I was definitely feeling the time off, they felt a lot harder than they used to. But no worries, it'll just take a little bit to get back. I'm guessing my indoor season is over because Coach said I'm not racing this weekend and Conference is next weekend, which you have to qualify for. Seeing as my two races sucked I don't think I'm anywhere close to getting in. I was hoping for one last chance to qualify but I know it's best to play things safe. Anyway, workout was 10x400s so I got to do the first 5. These were at 82-87 (3k pace) and we had 60 seconds rest. I hit 83, 84, 82, 84, 85. Then cooled down to 6.

Back to square 1. Last night my hip killed whenever I put weight on my left leg and ached when no weight was on it. This morning it felt a bit better but still hurt. When walking to the track I couldn't feel it, but when I stopped I could feel it again. It wasn't nearly as painful as last night, but I still thought I should play it safe. Haley said to do the warmups then if it hurt I had to stop. I did the warmups and it was bugging, but I still did the form mile cause I wanted to get at least some running in, stupid I know. Pain wasn't super intense but I could still feel it and I would occasionally get sharp pain in the front. Haley told me to get on the bike and just go easier than I did last time and see if that felt alright. I lessened the resistance and it didn't bug my hamstring too much so I did that for 30 minutes then did some exercises in the training room. Iced after that. Frustrated because I really just want to be back and running like normal.

These little injuries are the worst. See your time of cross training as important time to strengthen yourself mentally. Make the biking and swimming count and it will pay off even though you aren't running and feel like it's not the same. Injuries and cross training also give an opportunity to step back, set new goals and get at it again! Be patient- it will get better!

Good quote for today: Helaman 5:12

And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall.

Hip was feeling good so I thought I'd try running. It kind of hurt the first half mile but it wasn't nearly as painful as a few days ago, so I kept running and a mile into it I barely noticed it. Hamstring feels good too. Hopefully it'll continue to improve! 7:32 Average. I'm probably going to have to build mileage really slowly again, but it'll be good to make sure it doesn't get worse. I think the reason my hip problem started was because after the speed workout we did squats at weights, so as long as I don't do that again I should be fine.

This run felt like an eternity. It's kind of frustrating that I'm getting tired so soon but I know I just have to have patience as I get my endurance back. If any good has come out of getting injured it's that I am itching to run more miles again, running no longer feels like a chore and I am excited to run. Getting injured has reminded me of the reasons I love running and I have been really lucky so far with how my hip and hamstring are feeling. My other hip hasn't hurt in a long time (though I still have to get my SI joints realigned before practice. They've stayed aligned a lot more lately! So it is doing well). I underestimated the distance of the loop I was doing so I cut across campus and finished at Kacey's house (Clinton's probably gonna shoot me for jumping up in miles). 7:52 average.

Ran to practice today, maybe did it too quick at 7:08 average (2 miles). Then warmups and form mile after Alesha checked my SI joints (they weren't in alignment today so she helped me realign them). Today's workout was 60% on farm run. Started out feeling alright (a bit sick to my stomach but that's probably because I ate a ton of cookie dough at lunch, I have a bit of a sweet tooth haha). We started with a mile warmup at 7:41, then my splits for the 60% went 6:28, 6:44, 7:37, 7:33, and 8:07. It was the worst 60 I have done. I maybe should've done my extra miles after practice cause literally once I hit 5.5 to 6 miles I hit a wall. And today it was extreme, the last mile I had no energy and was just trying to finish. Clinton was a pal and encouraged me to keep going, it probably would have been much worse if he hadn't been there. So thanks Clinton! Coach wants me to get my iron tested, I sorta stopped taking my supplements which was a big mistake. Time to get some more iron in my diet too.

PM: Felt a lot better energy-wise today, but legs were dead and I couldn't get my legs to move fast so I was in the back with Kamryn and Clinton for a lot of it. We did Cookie Jar run after warmups and form mile. We all stayed together as a group for the middle, but the first 2 miles and last half mile we spread out. Honestly I was just happy to be able to keep up because my legs were so heavy, I fell behind on the huge hill but other than that I could stay with the back end of the group. Added a lap at the track to get to 10 for the day. Once I get adjusted to the mileage I know I will be able to push up to the front group again, but for right now I know my main problem is just getting my strength back. 7:54 average.

Warmups and form mile then a mile warmup. 5k group was doing 25x400s. It consisted of Ashley, Ashley, Angie and I so that was great! When coach first said it was speed today I was nervous because I haven't done speed in a long time, but then I thought it really wouldn't be that bad. I did 20x400s a long time ago just fine. I knew that it would be a long workout and that's what I usually do best at. The first five were supposed to be at 10k pace, then 5k pace, then I think 3k pace, then mile pace, and lastly coach was going to set the last set's pace. The rest was very little starting at 30, 45, 60, and 90 seconds. We started out and 10k pace felt harder than it should have and I was getting a bit worried, but I kept going. I think it's the rest that killed me. I averaged 86 for that set. The next set was where disaster set in. Also forgot to mention that wind was so strong today. I was literally getting blown over once we hit the curve a few times. Anyway, I just couldn't get my legs to move fast. It was the most frustrating feeling in the world, my legs were like lead. I think if I had remembered my flats that would have helped but I physically couldn't get my legs going. I wanted so bad to be able to keep up but I couldn't. I think if I was also in a better mood I could have done better, mentality wasn't there when I fell off. Ashley was a pal and encouraged me to work through. I hit that set in 94-97. That was discouraging. Coach told me to stop after that set.

Did cool down with Ashley afterwards, main street loop. Today just wasn't my day, even on the cool down I felt awful and we went super slow.

Warmups, form mile, then 50% today for 5k group. It was a bit bigger today, Kaylee joined us and Clinton ran with us as well! He was going to show us a new trail, Ashley said it was really pretty so I'm bummed I couldn't do the whole thing. My hamstring was hurting, the exact same way it did on the Saturday before the week I was sent to the pool when I ran through it so I was nervous about running through it again. I know it was just aggravated by the speed yesterday. I told Clinton and he said to turn at 2. I did STEM and iced, it seemed to help. Other than the hamstring I felt pretty good, legs are still tired but with it just being a 50% I could hit the pace just fine and that was going uphill. So I know I'm just not used to speed work. Might be unfortunate for the meet this weekend but I am excited to be racing outdoors! I also was sore today which is kind of sad because I hit those 400s super slow. But oh well it was my best effort yesterday so that's what counts and I shouldn't get so discouraged.

I fell off Angie and the Ashleys around sheep tunnels. Clinton stayed back with me cause he's supposed to stay at the back, but he never told me to speed up or anything so I feel accomplished. Going 50% pace uphill is harder than you'd think. Averaged 7:26. Then did 10x100 meter strides at mile pace with 15 seconds recovery between each. Again, I'm lacking in the speed department. Also, I am sore from Monday's workout and weights yesterday.

Iron is low, I've started taking supplements again to get it back up. I should never have stopped taking them.

Coach said I'm not racing this weekend which I'm bummed about. But as I've thought it out it's probably for the best, I'm obviously not in race shape right now.

Decided to try out C trail today, the one that is steep uphill. I thought it would flatten out after 2ish miles cause that's how the trails back in Salt Lake area are but nope this one literally scales the mountain. It's more of a hiking trail than running trail but it can be done! The view was absolutely amazing. I went up by the houses/cabins all the way up there, and past a few. I turned when snow was covering the path and I realized what time it was otherwise I probably would have kept going just to see how high up I could get. I was almost to the top of the mountain at that point though, I bet in another mile I would have been at the peak. Cedar has baby mountains though compared to those up north. But it was still cool to see exactly how far up the mountain I had gone when I got back to the bottom. 4 miles of steep uphill and 4 of steep downhill to average out at a whopping 10:18 pace #killingit

Shout out to the entire SUU student body cause everyone and their dog is getting engaged.

I've been thinking a lot about how my approach to running this year has differed from my approach last year. Last year I was confident in myself and in my training and knew I could be a top runner in the state. This year the field of competitors is completely different, everyone was once a top runner. I have lost confidence in myself and have been approaching workouts with the attitude that I'm sub par and out of shape. While it is partially true it shouldn't affect my attitude or drive because I can and will improve with time. Just because I suck right now doesn't mean that my current performances define who I am as a runner. If I work through the hard times I will eventually be able to experience the good times. And they could even come this year, I am capable of PRing and running a fast 5k this season and I will do everything I can to make sure that happens. I know I will have an outstanding end to my freshman year at SUU.

I had Alesha check out my knee cause it's been hurting, I'm just breaking and it's the worst. This one I will be running through unless it becomes more painful. I missed the warmups because of it but jumped in for the last of the stretches and did the form mile. Today was a 50%, we did End of the World and Kaylee picked us up. It was really nice because it's all slightly downhill and the wind was to our backs. We averaged 7:14, without the wind and downhill it probably would have been closer to 7:30. I started to feel tired at 3 today which wasn't fun but I stuck it out until the end. Thought that was a bit weird but I think I'm getting better at maintaining/pushing through. Stayed with Angie and Brighton for the whole thing, felt good about that cause usually they kill it on the 50s and I usually can't keep up for the last 3-4 miles. Once we got back to the track we did a lap to get warmed up again and did 10x100 meter strides with 15 seconds rest, this time on the turf. Started running Cross Hollows then decided I wasn't in the mood for the long uphill at the end so I turned at 3 then ran up into the neighborhoods. Was going to add on along Dikes to 10 but .75 away from my house there's this teeny hill on the trail and as I went up it I got sharp pain in my knee. Stopped because it was unexpected, then walked a few steps and it felt fine, then started again and as soon as I went to my right leg sharp pain again. I couldn't run up this puny little hill, I shouldn't even call it a hill. So I walked up it to where it was flat, and started again. A little sharp pain but as I kept going it was fine. So I ran to my house and stopped because I didn't want to risk making it worse. It just scared me because it hasn't been that sharp before, and just the fact that the pain come on suddenly, not gradually getting worse as the run goes on.

They weren't awesome but they weren't terrible either so I'm satisfied. I figured I should attempt to do some faster speed because I haven't done fast speed in forever, and if I race it'll be a shock to my body. Coach was going to put me in the 1500 this weekend (though he missed the registration deadline... hence why I'm not racing) but I'm kind of glad he didn't because I know that if I race that short/fast of a race I will be dying. Today was survival day on End of the World (meaning don't fall off the pack into no-man's land, so that when we go up into the mountains we don't get eaten by a bear. After all bears don't like fast food). Haha anyway, pace was pretty quick at 6:57 average but the wind obviously helped, though I bet without it we still would've been under 7:15 average. I started feeling it around the 4th mile but didn't start to struggle until the 5th, fell off the pack at 5.5, though my last 2 miles were consistent at 6:49 and 6:50 so they must have sped up. We all hopped into coach's truck at the 6 mile and I did another mile back at the track.

Shout out to Connor for getting called to Paris, France and my Roommate Megan for getting called to Jacksonville, Florida!

Had class right before practice, I made it on time but had to go to the training room for my knee exercises before I could start running. I got out in time to do the last half mile of the form mile. Real cold and windy. 5k group consisted of Angie, the Ashleys, Brighton and I. Our workout was a 60%. We did it on Cross Hollows and started at the trail. It just wasn't a very good day. It was supposed to be 5 miles at the 60 but I broke down at the 4th. Splits went 6:31, 6:34, 6:54, 7:48. Then gave up on the pace because I was just so frustrated with myself. Everyone in the 5k group are our top runners for Cross and then there's me. I couldn't even keep up on the warmup, they just go so fast and I'm just so discouraged that I can't keep up.

Went in to talk to coach today because I have been discouraged. I told him about feeling tired and how my legs have felt so heavy for months. He says I look really fatigued in practice and he's trying to figure me out :) I'm going to see if I can get some blood tests done cause coach wonders if there's something going on, he says I'm the only one who hasn't adapted to his program. Usually by now freshman start to bring their times down a lot, but I still look so tired in practice. Hopefully the tests show something, if not I don't know why I'm struggling so much. Missed the warmups and form mile because of our talk. Did a mile warmup then started the workout. 5k group did 6x800s at 5k pace, coach put the range as 2:38-2:48 so I decided to shoot for 3:00. Hit 2:58, 2:53, 2:57, 2:58, 3:02, 3:02. Cooled down to 8.

Carpooled to UVU with the other redshirts, I ran their warmup as a shakeout and added to 2. Warmed up 2 more miles then strides, stretching and drills. The meet was behind and took forever to start the races, I warmed up too soon. Worst race of my life (okay second worst, Roy Griak definitely takes the cake there). I considered dropping out halfway through but decided against it. Came through the mile at 5:49 then died. 6:45 (12:34), and 7:22 (19:56) were my other splits, then 50 seconds for the last .1. Skipped the cool down because we needed to head back to Cedar.

I've thought a lot about my race, and I know that mentally I wasn't there and I could've improved my time a lot if I would have been more positive. It was a good learning experience. I've also thought about how I am running right now and think it is almost a blessing. Obviously I wish that I could be running as fast as I was last year, but it has made me more grateful for signing with SUU. Coach, instead of cutting my scholarship out of frustration that I can't hit the times he wants me to, is genuinely trying to figure out a way to get me better for the years to come. He doesn't think any less of me because of how I am performing right now and instead sees the potential in me and every other athlete that he has had and focuses on what we can become. I know of a few coaches that would do the opposite. It has also pushed me towards serving a mission, I don't know what my choice would have been if I was doing really well right now. I know that I am going to have the best and hardest times on my mission, but know I will love it and be extremely grateful for serving one.

50% run, 5 steps into it my calves were burning. Made it a mile before I had to stop because they were so painfully tight. Stretched them for a bit, then continued. After a bit my hamstring tightened up. Still continued hoping it would be okay, but turned a little while later because I did not want to injure my hamstring again. Feel bad about how little I ran but I know that if I had gone to 8 like I planned it would have been bad news for my hammy. On the bright side it's been doing really well up until now, hopefully it feels good tomorrow.

Felt good for the first 2 miles and then not so much, but managed to stay within range for the rest of it. Had to hurry to make up a test I missed on Friday so I couldn't add to 8, but I'll probably go for a second run later today.

PM: 50% on canyon run, took the trail on the way back which slowed us down. Ended up averaging 7:39. Felt relaxed, but it still felt fast. But you know it's okay, the pace really isn't too much to ask, I think I've just been trying too hard to keep up with the other girls and on days when I can't it has been discouraging despite being well within the range. Having that meeting with Coach was good because he suggested staying at the back end of the pace and was totally fine with it, which relieved a lot of pressure I put on myself. The run was GLORIOUS thanks to Clinton :) Knee and hammy were bugging a bit today but weren't too bad, iced and STEM afterwards. Might see if Ashley can rub out my hamstring later tonight.

6 miles, out and back on Cross Hollows. Wind was very strong today, I was almost blown off the path a few times.

Motivation to run is very low right now, the fact that I'm going to be out of shape for 18 months has me a little less excited to be working hard. After all, it's all going to waste. I have senioritis all over again, this time with running.

What got me out the door today was the crazy statistic Ashley learned in class (she's majoring in exercise science): if you go 6 days without doing cardio exercises you lose 60% of your cardio, but if you go 30 days without working out your muscles you only lose 7% of your muscle mass. Runners are screwed.

I feel bad because I should want to run all I can before I go on my mission, take advantage of the time I have to workout before I get limited to a half hour a day. But like I said before, I won't get a pay off for any hard work I put in right now. So on days like yesterday when it turned back into winter I lose the desire to run. #sorry

We were supposed to do 6 of them (coach put me in the 800 group today) at 1500 pace. On the 4th my hamstring really tightened up with 200 to go, I was on pace for another sub-80 but my hammy! A mile shakeout in the morning with Ashley and Kamryn

1.5 warmup at BYU

Mile race: felt like I was going a lot faster than I actually was, most likely because I haven't gone that fast in months. Also, wind is currently 20 mph (though it was stronger earlier) so conditions aren't ideal. It's fortunate we live in Cedar City because that's become almost the norm so I was kind of used to it. Anyways, got a bad start and was out in lane 3 the whole first lap, then lane 2 for about 1.5 laps and finally moved into lane 1 for the last 1.5. Sort of died towards the end, I'm not used to racing. Amber was just ahead of me and I was ahead of all the other redshirts until the last lap when, just like in high school, I got outkicked by all but Kaylee in the last 200 meters. Yay. But, it was fun to race again and experience some of the joys of running once more. A little bummed about the time but I really just raced for fun so it doesn't really matter. Also, to put it in perspective, there were 12 girls seeded under 5 and only one broke it, so it was just a slow day for distance. Glad I can still break 6:00, I'm sure that'll be a struggle when I get back from my mission :)

Cooled down 1.5.

Started out with Cross Hollows, then hooked onto Cookie Jar. Once I got to the top of the hill I felt adventurous and went up another hill, then when the road hooked up with another I took it until it turned into a dead end. But that didn't stop me! Took some four wheeler trails until I ran into a construction site, which is where I realized I didn't even know if the trails were going to lead to the road I was hoping they would. But I didn't admit defeat! Kept going and found that they did in fact lead to that road :) went past the aquatics center and took Dikes back home.

It's going to be a change to go from hot and dry to hot and humid, I'm excited for it but also not because I've heard heat and humidity can be miserable. The dryness was getting to me today but I know I'll probably miss it in a few months. Though I am excited to go down to 1000 ft elevation instead of 6000, even dropping to 4000 (Salt Lake) feels awesome so I bet running in Missouri is going to feel amazing.

The average American most certainly thinks running is torture, only those of us dedicated enough to get past the wall of death (AKA actually getting in shape) can experience the joys of running. you'll gain a lot over 6-7 weeks of consistent running, and i think you'll be surprised by your fitness come january.

my opinion: don't try to force any workouts to get in shape quickly over the next month+. just focus on running steady, and slowly bring your easy pace down over time as you regain fitness. better to show up healthy and hungry in january rather than worn out from a fitness cram session. maybe throw in some fartlek runs or strides to get the dust out, otherwise just get the miles in. your body will find its groove.

welcome back, btw. hope all is well.

I'm allergic to something. Have hives everywhere and itch like crazy. It's painful to walk and I kind of limp to avoid putting my weight on areas that hurt, so thought it best not to run so I don't get tight from limping.

Yikes, another day of not running. I need to make running a bigger priority. Since deciding not to go back to SUU until the fall (many factors went into the decision, it's for the best) I've developed the awful attitude of "if I miss running today it's not going to be that big of a deal." I'm making it my goal to not miss a day of running for the next 3 weeks (excluding Sundays of course).

2 out and back on Foothill. Felt okay, my cold is hitting me pretty hard. 7:58 average.

On a brighter note, noticed that my pants were loose today so out of curiosity I hopped on the scale and realized I've lost 10 pounds! Was surprised actually because I've had more junk than food with nutritional value. Maybe I should be better about that...

Core later.

Not the most enjoyable run but it was good to get out. Felt kind of nauseous.

Turns out I'm not so great at this whole get back in shape thing. The only thing holding me back is my lack of motivation (especially when it's below freezing outside) and constant justification of things that shouldn't be justified, such as not going for runs. Having the goal of getting back in shape is great, but it's hard to meet it when I'm missing objectives. I'm looking into local races that I can sign up for to further my motivation and give me something to work toward. I think I might do the Salt Lake Running race series that starts in February, it's far enough away that I can get into decent shape and at least not feel like I'm going die when I race.

Ran to Sugarhouse, 2 road laps, then back home and added to 6. Yesterday was certainly a white Christmas, and now everyone is taking advantage of the snow! The only other time I have seen Sugarhouse that busy was at State. All those hills make for good sledding. On the second lap a woman passed me, I was a little startled (I had only seen 2 other runners) but decided to match my pace to hers. She seemed to be going a lot faster than I was so I wasn't confident I could keep up, but surprisingly it felt good and I seemed to be stronger than she was on hills. I miss running with a team and having people faster than I am to push me.

Good news! I have lost 15 pounds now since coming home from my mission, 5 to go to get back to my normal weight!
