Awesome stuff! I'm so excited and surprised I did so well in the race today! Just pushed hard the whole time and came out on top, time-wise and place-wise. Hamstrings and calves are pretty dead. And I'm depressed to no end that I had to turn down $500. I am planning on doing a blow-by-blow of the race, I just have to work all night first. So tomorrow sometime, hopefully.

Now, for the mile-by-mile breakdown!

1- 6:16, was sure I'd started off too fast, but just stuck with the lead ladies and hoped they'd slow down, chatted a bit with Erica Schramm.

2- 6:24, glad we'd slowed down a bit, still was doing my best to stay with a group of about 5 women nearby, was thinking how dead I was going to be for the second half if we stayed this fast for much longer (hilarious, since this was actually my slowest mile).

3- 5:47, the crazy downhill started! Just stuck with the leaders and let the hill take me along for the ride. Way fast.

4- 5:48, still downhill, lost a bit on the first few women but just decided to stay with my rhythm and make it up once it flattened out a bit.

5- 5:51, started reeling in the three ladies ahead of me, tried to cut good tangents and made up some ground when they slowed to get some water.

6- 6:00, finally the course leveled off a bit, by now I'd passed one woman and had two ahead, legs getting fatigued.

7- 6:06, at the end of this mile I barely took the lead, which I was certain would be recovered by some better conditioned marathoner, so I was running in fear the rest of the race (half at 39:22).

8- 6:14, with 5 to go I was dying and just kept pushing in hopes of not getting passed.

9- 6:18, so tired, but I was just thinking that 4 miles isn't too far to go... finish it!

10- 6:15, hanging on and pushing, sure someone was right on my tail.

11- 6:16, same as mile 10

12- 6:15, teamed up with a man nearby and helped push it for the last couple miles. So ready to be done!

13.1- 6:16+0:29, finally realized I could actually win this thing, kept pushing with dead legs and cruised into the finish.

Realized right after the finish how close I was to breaking 1:20, but I'm just ecstatic to have run as fast as I did! Met Melanie and got to congratulate her on her awesome finish, plus talked to Erica a bit too. Had such great competition, it was an awesome race. Got to go home with 2 free smoothie coupons, a refund of this year's entry fee, a comp for next year and an ugly trophy! I don't even want to think about all that money I had to turn down... probably won't do this race for another 4 years, so I don't have to turn down that much money ever again. It's just too depressing. But, neglecting that issue, this race was awesome. I pushed harder than I thought I could and managed a huge (6 minute) PR and a win!

Hey Ruth, what an accomplishment today! It was good to see you down here and tuff it out with ya. Keep up those miles and keep on winning!

From Burt on Sat, Jul 18, 2009 at 18:52:08 from 98.167.151.26

Dang Ruth! Low 6's? For 13.1 miles?? You just keep getting faster and faster.

From Burt on Sat, Jul 18, 2009 at 18:56:46 from 98.167.151.26

Oh yeah. Please make a comment when you're done with the detailed report so I know when to come back and check it. :)

Ok Ruth, after this you have to admit your the one who pushes the pace when we run! What an awesome race, I am not even worthy to comment on your blog. Holy smokes, very sweet time and the victory to boot, Yeehaaaw!!!!

You kicked some serious booty today Ruth. I'll be expecting my check in the mail. Good job.

Hey congratulations, it was a tougher field this year and you still had a good lead on the other ladies! Do you know if they pushed the prize money down a slot because of your refusal? I remember forfeiting something like $20 in college, nothing compared to $500.

From paul on Sun, Jul 19, 2009 at 15:49:36 from 75.162.109.179

Great job Ruth. Bummer about the $500, but hopefully you also got some pizza coupons or free socks or something you can actually keep.

From Ruthio on Sun, Jul 19, 2009 at 18:07:02 from 75.169.245.137

Thanks you guys!

Fine Mike, I'll admit it once you admit that you're to blame sometimes too! It takes two...

Michelle, I just tried not to think about the money, though I think MaryAnn went up and made sure they pushed down the prize money so she got 100 for 6th.

From melanieb on Sun, Jul 19, 2009 at 18:41:33 from 75.169.203.213

Ruth you are so awesome! Sorry I took the $500 I would of been happy with my PR. You are an amazing runner!

From scotthughes on Sun, Jul 19, 2009 at 20:26:19 from 209.33.211.3

Great race! You did awesome. I am sure it had something to do with the great training run last saturday....lol

I loved reading your recap...makes me want to push harder next time, that is certainly my weakness.

From Superfly on Sun, Jul 19, 2009 at 22:16:59 from 74.211.95.149

Way rocking time. I think I ran a 1:20 in 2006 and then ran a 2:36 at STG so there you go... even though you won't be running the marathon maybe that's your calling.

From Superfly on Sun, Jul 19, 2009 at 22:27:16 from 74.211.95.149

Oops. I ran a 1:15 in 2006 and got chicked by Devra... but you still kicked some trash so good job.

From Cody on Sun, Jul 19, 2009 at 22:28:46 from 67.161.250.22

Awesome Job Ruth! Way to run with your head and not panic early on.

From Holt on Mon, Jul 20, 2009 at 12:43:16 from 75.169.57.203

As always... Super proud of you Ruthio. Your love of running is an inspiration TO THE WORLD!

From Stewmyster on Tue, Jul 21, 2009 at 15:24:56 from 134.250.61.85

Great job on the race. You really smoked it!

From redrooster on Wed, Jul 22, 2009 at 01:52:49 from 71.219.139.102

Nice job, great race and way to represent USU! Sorry about the 500 dollars! Hey, I was wondering if you are going to be taking my general chemistry 1210 this fall at USU since you are a mechanical engineering major. I teach the 8:30 section (Scott Ensign) and have most of the engineers in that section. If so I will see you soon!

From JulieC on Wed, Jul 22, 2009 at 18:26:15 from 67.42.127.35

You will more than likely me soaring even to higher heights (in running) by the time you are 40!! Great run!!! Hey, I noticed that your third mile was 5:47, somehow I ran a 5:48 that mile then someone took off my wings (basically I put on the breaks, I don't run THAT fast but it was cool while it lasted). Good job for running strong, happy running!!!
