Oh man, you gotta watch out for those snow plows. They win every time. That is enough reason to keep your CI turned on for these quiet morning runs.

From Bonnie on Mon, Jan 10, 2011 at 21:17:22 from 128.196.228.134

wow a bald eagle? That is cool. much cooler than the snowplow. If you give us the co-ordinates of your run we will know which pile of snow to look for you in ...

From Scott Ensign on Tue, Jan 11, 2011 at 00:07:25 from 65.100.210.17

Nan, I think you could be right. it is starting to unnerve me going around those blind curves in BF canyon without any hearing. I may very well have to strap that thing on for those runs.

From Scott Ensign on Wed, Jan 19, 2011 at 15:38:29 from 129.123.3.84

Joe- I think I do have a fairly distinctive (and goofy) stride, due to the way my feet and legs are designed. But if it gets me recognized that is always good. lets get out there soon, I need some motivation.

Bonnie, you are a shoo in for tenure! And then you can relax, you deserve it!

From Scott Ensign on Sun, Jan 30, 2011 at 19:58:12 from 65.100.210.17

Burt, quarters are good because you get to stop right when you get tired!

Chad, I may very well do the half, it depends on my friend Mark Ostler who lives in Riverton- if he does it I will. Hope to see you there if so.

Allie- thanks, and no PE class to dodge this time either!

Joe, looks like they dropped FYB this year:

USU green canyon. clean air. I've decided to only run in the winter when the air quality is good, or when I have time to get above the inversions. My extensive research leads me to believe more harm than good is done by running in toxic polluted inverted air.

got a comp courtesy of my friend who is the CFO of the race sponsor. Great race on a challenging course. Training has been spotty, I forgot my garmin, and it was cold and windy so I wasn't really planning on doing more than trying to finish this in under 90 minutes. But fortunately I found blogger Chad at the starting line. He had his garmin and told me he was going for under 1:25, so I decided to hook up with him as far as I could. We decided to take turns breaking the strong south wind, by switching the lead every half mile or so. Chad ended up doing more of the wind breaking than me, maybe due to something he ate the night before? Lame attempt at joke. Anyway it was nice to have someone to run with and keep me motivated, and not to worry about the pace since he took care of that with his garmin. He would take the lead on the hills, but I managed to catch him again up until about mile 10 when he started to gap me and finished 30 or so seconds ahead of me, nice job Chad. I felt surprisingly good for this race considering really spotty training and less than ideal conditions. I shaved more than two minutes off last year's time in this race despite being in worse shape and worse weather? Maybe I will continue to prepare for races by not training as hard?

Anyway, this has become one of my favorite Utah races- great organization, challenging honest loop course, great group of runners, awesome volunteers, and cool new wagon wheel trophies three deep in all age groups.  And timed by runnercard, who always does a great job.

I think it is almost more work writting these race reports than running the race. I have a real challenge running behind people(or biking behind people) - I don't know what it is. There are a couple of good pics of us on the Zoosk web page. (BTW the guy that ran with us for a while did finish about 4 minutes behind us). Once again, Nice Job!

Allie, looking forward to running the half with you! My guess is you will leave me behind this time.

Kelli, this is indeed a nice race. thanks for passing my comments to the organizers.

Steve, too bad about BYU losing to Florida. I missed the game anyway, bummer.

Aaron- I am not sure if I will do BB this year or not. busy summer. depends on if the kids want to go to Boulder. I still need to try to break 38 there, my best time is 38:00. and last year was 38:03. Got to break that cursed barrier.

I got as pair of hoka bondi's as a gift so took them for a two mile test spin. interesting shoe.. very cushioned, and impossible to heel strike based on the design of the foot sole. they claim they emulate barefoot running on sand or grass.... definitely very cushioned, but lacking in flexibility. I think this is a good shoe for the rotation for long runs when training for a marathon when cushioning is needed, but I am still unsure how the lack of flexibility will work with my rigid feet .

got my yearly free entry courtesy of a friend whose company sponsors the race. still a chaotic disorganized mess at the start but at least they got rid of the chain link fence penning and corraling the runners in at the start, although the porta pottie and start situation is still a complete disaster.  Anyway, the course itself is fun, the weather was great, and the volunteers and police did a nice job. Finally met Rob Murphy at the start and chatted a bit, talked a bit with Steve Anderson as well. My strategy with fairly limited training was to push hard for the first nine miles and then just hold on from there and try to make it to the finish.  I was happy when Allie pulled up along side me around mile 8, that gave me a little mental boost to stay with her through Liberty park, but I was pretty wiped out by then and already psyched out by the thought of State street ahead. Allie forged on running really strong and I struggled up State, then I  turned in a decent final mile to finish in 1:21:10, about 90 seconds faster than last year so I can't complain. unfortunately I couldn't stick around after the race as my son was playing tennis at the Ogden invitational so I drove to Ogden to watch his matches. good day and fun to see some bloggers. good luck to the Boston runners tomorrow! local elementary school fundraiser, none of the serious runners come to this so it is pretty much a solo time trial. Since the money is for Providence elementary I wish they would ditch the millisecond chip timing they use, which takes a huge chunk of the entry fee with their ridiculous fees for timing the race. I am no fan of milliseconds anyway, and you would think they could provide free or reduced rate timing for fund raisers for schools but I guess not. And there is no reason to chip time a little race like this with no serious runners anyway. I've tried to convince the people in charge of this but to no avail.
Whoever marked the course added an extra block before first turn, which added exactly 0.25 miles to the race, making it a 5.4 instead of 5K. Oh well it's a fundraiser for the school, and to make money for millisecond chip timing, so it hardly matters.  The course is a loop with rolling hills through River Heights and Providence. Splits were 5:42 (mostly downhill), 6:02 (rolling hills but net level), 6:20 (uphill) and 5:39 for 0.35 miles (downhill). Kind of a "bleh" performance, not really motivated for racing right now. I entered the SG lottery, and i am almost hoping I don't get in so I can just take the summer off and get fat and lazy. If I don't get into SG then Bolder Boulder on Memorial day will be my last race of the year before a low key 5K in November.

Sounds like a very fine race Scott ... I know what you mean about getting into the "racing mode" -- I have actually been sort of enjoying not racing this spring ... but I kind of miss it too. Regardless, life is just to chaotic this semester to plan any type of social life ;-)

Hope you are enjoying the winding down of the semester!

Nice race Scott! chip timing for a school 5K+? How could anyone care about there time that much (especially when the course was set up long). You can't retire yet - we need to race a well trained half this summer or fall.

OH, wow. WHY on earth would a school have a chipped race for a fundraiser? That is silly.

Nice job! I hope you get in to St George, sorry to go against you! I think you would do phenomenally well there!!!

From Scott Ensign on Sun, May 08, 2011 at 22:54:21 from 129.123.3.31

Thanks for the comments everyone! I agree it is silly to chip time this, just because it costs a HUGE amount of money, and there is no need whatsoever. But the organizers are obsessed with the technology for some reason. Or maybe there is some nepotism or something with the milli people :-) , I don't know.

Steve A- I don't know, I would like to have run at a 5:45 pace throughout but don't seem able.. I am not getting slower on this course, but not faster :-(

Bonnie- therein lies my problem I think- too busy at work to really train like I should and get motivated for races. If only I didn't have a day job...

Chad- If I get into SG I will probably run TOU half. But I have a really full summer, so if i can take a break I probably will. Then I can start fresh in the 50 year old age group where I am in the bottom in age instead of the top like now!

Steve P and Dave- well, if you guys get into SG then I definitely want to get in, that will make it funner to have you guys to run with. We find out tomorrow I guess

Kelli- you are getting me more excited about getting into SG, thanks!!

tough day at health days. I thought I was in as good of shape as last year, but I ran a full minute slower. Not sure how to interpret that. It was warmer, head wind up the canyon, I am too old for this, I don't know.
Course goes 3 miles up Smithfield canyon for continuous 500 foot climb, then you come screaming back down again . my trouble today was getting moving on the uphill. I just couldn't get my legs to turn over like I wanted.
mile splits: 6:27, 7:03, 7:23, 5:38, 6:02, 5:47, 5:20 for 0.2 miles.
Well, it was still fun, got to see and talk to Conner, Rob, Steve, Dave and Keith. Finished about 30 seconds back from Keith and way back from Conner and Steve. big congrats to Conner on another solid win. I was hoping to win the SG marathon entry but alas no such luck.

Scott, I hate to say this, but that was a sweet race. 4 of the top 5 finishers were over 40. I'm pretty proud of that. You didn't look winded at all when we passed each other at the turn around. I thought that you and Keith would be stomping me flat down that canyon road.

We did end up going skiing but it was pretty windy.

A 3% slope for 3 miles is tough (especially when adding heat and head wind). Maybe it was more of a mental challenge than a physical one. Nice pick-up on the second half - You definately know how to let it go on the downhill (you were the same in Riverton). Have a great relaxing summer (maybe I will catch up with you at a TOU event).

Scott, the company that timed the race is called race day timing. They made milliseconds look wonderful. They had me with a gun time of 18:19 [which I think is accurate]chip time 19:11 and now that it's posted they have me at 18:08 for both gun and chip. I could make a pretty long list of other things that were screwed up about them but I don't want to take up that much of your blog space. Good luck at Bolder Boulder next week.

Thanks everyone! it is indeed a fun course and fun to finish in the stadium and then watch the other runners come in.

It is a pretty tough course, net 75 feet uphill now that they changed the course eliminating the initial downhill from Pearl Street. There are also lots of turns and some pretty decent hills. But with the wave starts you get the motivation of having a bunch of similar runners to run with so thatr offsets the difficulty a bit.

Burt- Ryan Hall was there, he ran the pro race that starts after all the citizen races are done. They have a team competition and the Ethiopians won again as every year. It was interesting to see that a local guy from Colorado won the citizens race with a time that was one second faster than Hall's time in the pro race! Shows the citizens race attracts some pretty decent runners.

You always threaten to take time off, so this time I was surprised that you actually did. Must have been a nice break. Knowing you, you'll bounce back and start setting PRs next week.

planters fasciitis in my right foot. tried to run in (a) hoka bondis with hard orthotic inserts. then tried NB790s. foot hurt too much to run in either. if anyone has any suggestions on how to deal with this I would be grateful. this is the first time I have had PF. it is weird, appeared out of nowhere while in Madison two weeks ago. I am stretching and rolling my foot, that's all I can think of. that and getting fat and lazy.

dang. sorry scott. my suggestion was going to be stretching and rolling -- but you are already doing that. maybe some good massaging with a tennis ball? good luck.

From Nan on Wed, Jul 27, 2011 at 12:27:42 from 98.245.117.176

I have PF from time to time. It got really bad a few months ago and I ice cup massaged, golf ball rolled, and slept with a night splint. The night splint seemed to help the most. Also make sure your calves, specifically the posterior tib muscles are staying loose. Orthotics may be a temporary crutch but I think you'll be better off in the long run to keep your feet strong in neutral shoes.

sorry I haven't blogged in a while. I am fighting PF in my right foot and metastarsalgia in my left foot to the point I can barely walk at times. I don't know how I developed either of these problems, I have never had problems with the soles of my feet before. So I  haven't been running much and have been experimenting with different shoes to see what will get me back on track. Meanwhile I have had a great summer with lots of camping traveling, reading books, home projects. I should feel bad I haven't run more, but I really don't. And with the injuries there isn't much I can do about that anyway. the miles for today are really a compilation of about all I have managed for the last 3.5 weeks with all my troubles. My goal now is to get my feet healthy, no races for awhile. I will try to put in about 4 miles a day this next week and see what happens. I am going to try running them in my hoka bondis to give me some more cushioning and see if that helps. they are actually a very cool shoe.

Yuck. Sorry to hear about this Scott. Foot problems are not fun.

I hope you find what works for you ... one thing I have found that works ... in addition to wearing my night splint (http://www.footsmart.com/P-Plantar-FXT-30055.aspx)

is using an arch support band: http://www.footsmart.com/P-FootSmart-ArchHuggers-10085.aspx

it is cheap, and I think it helps.

I hope you have a wonderful semester!

Man it sounds like you've got a bad case of PF. Are you wearing a night splint? That seems to help the most for me. And really deep painful massage, ART, or graston scraping also helps (eventually).

From Scott Ensign on Sat, Sep 10, 2011 at 14:15:56 from 67.40.114.168

Nan, and Allie, thanks for the support and advice, I appreciate it, I definitely need to get the night splint I think. I think this is all due to my very high arches- and then all the traveling I did in June and July with lots of standing/walking was in shoes with no arch supports. I am now wearing rigid high arch supports in all my shoes and it seems to be helping somewhat. Looks like Aaron is having fun at the 100- I better go check and see what he is up to....

ran from home to millville and out the TOU course. my mission was to deliver a cold mountain dew to Steve Anderson. Unfortunately I never found him. Did get to cheer for Paul as he turned toward the millville hill. Then I stopped at the mile 17 aid station to wait for Steve. I almost missed Allie blasting past tucked in to the middle of a pack running at a really fast pace, fortunately I was able to see her and shout some words of encouragement just in time- great race Allie!  Waited awhile for Steve, figured I must have somehow  missed him as the runners were now coming by at about a 7:30 pace, so started jogging back down the course on the sidewalk, careful to stay off the course itself. Stopped to talk to a neighbor for awhile, then saw Keith Anderson come by, he had torn his calf and was in a lot of pain, but refused to quit since he has finished every tou since the first, he is one tough dude. Ran with him for a mile or so then came home, then spent the day building a tennis backboard for my son's eagle project. The 20% chance of rain took a bee line right for braegger park in Providence and parked there for 4 hours. wet and cold but we got it done, except for the final painting and finishing.

From Scott Ensign on Sun, Oct 02, 2011 at 13:09:15 from 70.58.46.82

Cody, our original plan was to go all the way across and come down deep canyon. but we didn't get on the trail until noon. then we missed the turn to the trail off the jeep road (it is pretty poorly marked) and took a scenic spur two miles each direction out of our way. So we had an extra four miles once we backtracked. By the time we got to the top through all that brush it was getting late, I wasn't even sure if that was the right trail, and i was demoralized, so we tucked our tails and went back. But now I am just more committed to doing the whole thing!

HEY, Scott! What is up?

From Scott Ensign on Fri, Oct 07, 2011 at 21:36:05 from 67.40.113.82

Kelli, good to hear from you. lets see whats up- fighting plantars fasciitis (yuck), trying to stay motivated, not looking forward to winter, eating too much junk food. any good races down in Riverton soon? I am looking forward to the half marathon in March already!

From Kelli on Fri, Oct 07, 2011 at 21:50:35 from 71.219.83.151

OH MAN. Darn PF. Mine is hurting big time since the marathon. I swear, it never goes away. Well, that was encouraging!

They have a 5 mile run next Friday night---something about Halloween and in the dark and so on. i forgot to sign up! But we may just register the day of and do it with the kids for fun!

SO, are you going to attempt the St George lottery next year?

From Scott Ensign on Fri, Oct 07, 2011 at 21:56:12 from 67.40.113.82

yes, I am definitely going to try my luck at SG again, that seems to be where the fun party is. I can't figure out how all you guys got in while I didn't, except I have really bad luck.

My stupid PF has been here for three months and counting now. it is driving me nuts. well at least we can commiserate!

From Kelli on Fri, Oct 07, 2011 at 22:04:43 from 71.219.83.151

Mine comes and goes, but is always there for a bit after a race! And i stand on my feet all day at work so that does not help!

My husband's work gets us in every year! BUT they make me try the lottery first. So, out of the 4 years, i have only gotten in though the lottery once. I also have bad luck, I just married the right guy.

A student in my biochemistry class told me about this race yesterday, put on at USU by ROTC so I decided to see where I am at in the 5K. Race is through campus on sidewalks, quite a few turns, but a flat pretty fast course. Pretty good turnout and for a good cause. Garmin mile splits were 5:56, 5:54, 6:07, and then about 6:15 for 0.1. I am pretty happy with this race effort since my foot hurts bad and I haven't raced since beginning of June. I won the "over 35" age group (did I mention I will turn 50 in 12 days) and got a 25 dollar gift certificate to Indian Oven, a one month family membership to Sports Academy and some other miscellaneous swag for my efforts. My student beat me by 30 seconds to take overall while a 32 year old guy from Idaho came in a few seconds ahead of me.   I'll have to try to get even in another race!

I was joined for my one mile interval workout on the east bench by one of my biochem students, it was great to have a faster person to push me. we ran 4 x 1mile with about 90 second recoveries on my one mile course by Lundstrom park. We played rabbit where I took a 20 second head start over my student and he still caught me, passed me, and beat me on each interval by 10 seconds. My splits were 6:01, 6:01, 6:08, and 5:59 while Thomas' were about 5:30 each.
