This is a downhill course, but there was a HUGE south wind that wreaked havoc, as the first ~5 miles run due south. Couldn't find anyone to draft off so had to gut it out. Glad I wasn't running the full marathon.

50,000+ runners, this is the ultimate 10K... I came in to break 38 and ended up finishing with a  38:00 chip time. I was running off my GPS and as I neared the finish realized the GPS wasn't estimating right, so I made a mad dash for the finish but couldn't gain that extra second. Oh well, something to shoot for next year. Got 4th out of 446 46 year olds for my effort.
The 38:00 finish will get me into the first A wave, as that is the cut-off time; I ran out out of AA this year. Hopefully running with the elite A wavers will give me a little boost!

started my usual USU-green canyon 7 miler, then on a whim decided to check out the bonneville shoreline trail since I hadn't been on it since they finished it. It is very nice, well graded. At the point the trail comes to the golf course there is still construction and I turned up the hill by mistake not realizing the trail down was the right way- so I ended up scrambling down to the main trail taking a fall in the meantime. Oh well. The trail is nice, but too hilly for my tastes. I will stick to the river trail for my off road running. I hope they will get the trail to Stokes entrance completed soon as I hate running on the highway.

Well, I was supposed to hook up in the morning with my (much younger and supposedly tougher) training mentors. But they decided the weather was too tough for them. Me, I grew up in Wisconsin and spent two years in Norway, including one year above the arctic circle, in Narvik and Tromso, where the sun doesn't rise for two and a half months and the snow is so deep the roads can look like narrow canyons with 10 foot walls of snow on either side. So nothing Utah can throw at me bothers me. OK- so I went out at 8:30 AM in blizzard like conditions. Roads were OK some places, bad others. But this is the kind of running I like. I put in 12.1 miles @ 7:37 average on my Providence-Millville-River Heights-South Logan loop. I was amazed I held that overall pace, because the two miles coming back up 100 east and Canyon road was like running on a wet ice rink- no traction, complete slush slop, I had to baby step the whole way up. Overall I was happy with the run, and glad it is over.

I love it! I am a firm believer that if more people said Yes to bad weather running we would all get that paradigm shift and just deal with it. This is the winter for me! I am going to try to keep running in all weathers by not questioning "should I run today?" when I look out the window. Thanks for sharing your inspiring run.

Younger...yes, Tougher...nope

From redrooster on Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 13:37:01

Cody, I see you were out there in the nine degree weather this morning which I think gives you the toughness edge... brrr... being cold-blooded I am still waiting for the thermometer to hit 25 degrees if I am lucky! Let me know if you have any runs planned this week that can help an old codger like me prepare for Ogden marathon- I am relying on you, Jon, Joe and Paul to serve as my coaches, kind of out of pity, charity and public service!! Scott

I was just wondering this morning whether I will be able to do some speedwork next month if these conditions continue. Also wondering whether it changes ones gait to do so. Great to see your workout.

From redrooster on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 17:41:48

My speedwork times dropped 20 seconds per mile this week as I had to move off the track and onto the streets, the track here is covered in snow until March probably. I am starting some base marathon training and my "coach" (Paul Petersen) has advised me to stop with the interval work for awhile and just focus on building miles if I am going to do a spring marathon. So I think I will take his advice. I had been in 10K training mode so I am going to make the shift. I am going to see when Newport is in the spring and debate running that, my other option is the Ogden Utah marathon May 16. Thanks for the note, be careful running on the ice and snow, a friend of mine broke his leg in 3 places yesterday falling on the ice here :-( Scott

Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesTotal Distance
9.000.000.000.009.00

OK, I have decided to start gradually building my base mileage on the advice of my newly-hired coach, Paul Petersen, who has graciously agreed to turn me into a master's marathon champion, or I get my money back (all zero dollars of it). The tentative goal: Ogden Marathon, May 16, 2008, sub 3 hour. So today I ran 9 miles @7:34 pace.

Hope your calves are feeling better. My experience this week was similar, running on snow and ice with Yaktrax. One ankle felt pretty crummy. But today, on bare pavement, it was like I had new legs. Where did you get that 60F weather? I have your snow. Wanna trade?

From redrooster on Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 19:37:15

Thanks, yes, my calves are fine now, no damage done. I am down in Southern California in Carlsbad and also outside Valley Center at my in laws avocado farm, so I run in San Marcos, half way between, nice easy running, here is my general course I have been following:

http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2459214

Geez, I read your account about the tool bandits, scary stuff, glad it turned out OK. Good idea to carry the pepper spray, if not just for mean dogs. Me, I lost all my hearing two years ago from some autoimmune thing (sudden senorineural hearing loss) and I now have a cochlear implant, but I take it out to run so am completely deaf while running. It makes things kind of interesting, hard to be social when running in company, and of course can't hear the traffic or farm dogs coming at me! But all part of the adventure I guess! I would have been worthless in the situation you got in though.

If you are up to 17 miles already you are way ahead of me. I am shooting for Ogden Utah marathon May 16, conditional on staying injury free and motivated.!
