From Newby track out over youngberg hill and back to the track.

I didn't really feel like a long run, or really any run for that matter, this morning but I went anyway. I'm glad I did as it turned out to be a very pleasant run. Weather was chilly but I was able to go with shorts and 2 shirts. I used my water belt for the first time (just needed one bottle on it). It worked great, hardly knew it was there. Didn't see a single dog which is unusual for this country route. All and all it was good.

TM at Aqt Center during lunch. Did hill intervals. 2 min hill/2 min flat all at 5.2. Hills progressed in increments of 1 from 1 to 7. Felt great. Probably ought to do at a faster speed next time.

I am getting excited about Painters. My plan is to run 14 this Saturday, then 7 the following Saturday and then the next Saturday is race day. Is that too much of a taper??

From Smooth on Fri, Jan 08, 2010 at 15:36:48 from 174.23.217.47

NICE hill intervals. Pron8 taught me this in running hills: pump your arms, somehow the legs will follow. Something I'm still learning to do.

Your taper plan sounds good to me!

From Mack on Fri, Jan 08, 2010 at 18:51:25 from 71.111.182.118

Rhett- I think I have a reasonable chance at a pr, especially if the race is not too hilly, but mostly I just want to have fun and hopefully meet a few fellow forumites. Have you run it before? Is it hilly?

Smooth, Thanks for passing on the pron8er tip. I'll try it out on my next run with hills.

From Rhett on Fri, Jan 08, 2010 at 19:44:17 from 74.32.208.70

Mack, I ran it last year for my first time. To be honest I really did not like the course and swore I would not run it again, but the lure of seeing forum friends has brought me back. Yes there are a few big hills in the middle and some of the race is run through neighborhoods without the roads being closed so you are dodging cars as you are trying to run the tangents crossing back and forth on the road. It's probably not an ideal PR course, but that doesn't mean it can't be done.

Same distance and route as two weeks ago.

I had planned to do it in the morning but my wife had a 4H meeting with my daughter and needed me to help out with the other kids and I would have been too pushed for time so... well,  you get the picture...man it's tough sometimes to find a way to squeeze these runs in! So with everything else we had going on I ended up not being able to start my run until about 9pm. It was dark and cold and I was tired and full of food. But I thought hey if smooth can polish stainless steel for half the night and then entertain a house full of primary presidents the next morning and then pop off an 18 miler, if she can do all that, surely I can do this. And so I did. My legs were sluggish and achey (probably had something to do with my bad attitude) after only a few miles. Finally at about mile seven I blurted out loud to myself "tonight you are going to dig down and find out what you've got." And I stuck it out. The last 3 miles were very tough. I tried everything to deal with the fatigue and pain. I counted steps. I sang songs. I quoted verses of scripture I counted telephone poles. I recounted every house my wife and I have ever lived in (total of 10). These things helped a little but not enough. It was just really tough and I'm not sure why when two weeks ago the exact same route was easier. But I made it. I finished by the football stadium. As I limped past the highschool to my truck at nearly midnight a couple of rough looking teenagers walked by in the dark and looked real close at me. I thought "if they attack me, I'm dead. I have zero energy to run away or fight." Thankfully they just kept walking. I went home took a hot bath and fell in to bed at about 1:00 am and then got up for my church meetings at 6:30am. I will sleep good tonight! Outside of all of that personal drama, it was a pretty routine run.

Great job, Mack! These are the runs that pay off down the road. If you are used to running in the morning like I am, I find night runs to be entirely different, they are just harder, nothing to worry about in my opinion. Unfortunately, I haven't memorized enough scriptures to keep me going for more than a 400 I am afraid.

From Smooth on Sun, Jan 10, 2010 at 21:17:53 from 174.23.217.47

WOW! Mack!!! I agree with flatlander. Night runs are a whole different animal! WAY to get out there after a full day of chores & fam. responsibilities!!! Such mental toughness is gonna pay off come race time! SO PROUD of you in getting her done!

Mine was FUN b/c I had Teena to run with me! It'd be a drag to run solo at night. The HS dudes alone would scare the heck out of me!

I LOVE your song singing and scriptures quoting. When my legs cramp up bad at the last 5K of a marathon, I also sang Primary songs and prayed. Now you inspired me to memorize some scriptures! THANKS!!! :)

Mack, way to push through even when you didn't feel like it. Now you can start to taper a bit and Painter's half in 2 weeks is going to feel super easy. Great job!

I hate to do this but I am going to just paste the same report that I put over on the forum flyers board. Here it is:

I came to St George with two goals, meet some forumites and finish in under 2 hours. I came very close to reaching both.

My friend and sometimes training partner Rich and I met up at about 8am (he had flown in from Susanville, California). We walked over from the hotel to the start and froze for a while before we realized we could go in the Dixie center  Once inside I scanned the crowd looking for anyone who resembled a forumite but found that when all you have to go on is a picture it is hard to pick someone out in the flesh.

We got out to the start line just in time and bang we were off. I made a very dumb, rookie garmin owner mistake of not turning it on enough ahead of time to get a signal. It took the first quarter mile or so to acquire one. As a result, it’s only value became to give me my pace and to challenge me with difficult math problems in trying to calculate what my actual time and distance might be at any given time. I found that as the race wore on the math became increasingly fuzzy. I also saw the horse on the loose at the start. I hope he got back in the pasture without any harm.

The first couple of miles were not comfortable. My legs felt heavy. My legs finally started feeling better at about mile 5. Soon after Rich and I crossed under the freeway we saw the leaders coming towards us. It is so cool to see what these guys look like and how fast a 5 something pace really is. I told Rich that there was a guy named Rhett whom I had never met who was probably going to be coming by somewhere in the top 20 or so. So I started to quietly say “hi” to any one of those leaders who looked even remotely like Rhett. Going that fast most of them looked like they could be him. As each zoomed by I said “go Rhett.” I got mostly blank stares or weird looks but one of them smiled and gave me a slight wave. Turns out it was Rhett and he was flying!

I kind of liked that long loop that turns you back around. About half way through it (the gentle uphill part) I found a comfortable rhythm and sped up a little. My friend Rich faded behind me. I ran the rest of the race alone. The downhill part of that loop felt great. My pace slipped under 9 and I thought “wow this is fun, I can hold this pace forever.” By mile 12 the euphoria was gone and I was hurting. My pace slipped down to around 9:30.  I saw a small lady with black hair in front of me and even though I knew speedy Smooth would probably be far ahead of me I took a chance and in a kind of loud voice said “smooth.” She didn’t look back and when I passed her I could see that it was defiantly not her. Oh well I guess I can’t be lucky every time with the name calling thing.

The last mile or so was really tough and I just kept telling myself to hold on and finish strong. That downhill bridge at the very end was only a few steps long but it made my quads scream and for some weird reason that made me chuckle to myself. I crossed the finish line with a chip time of 2:00:54. Average pace 9:17. Even though I missed my goal by 55 seconds it was still a pr for me.

I like the course and the weather was the kind that we have all winter long up here in Oregon. There could not have been any more familiar and ideal weather conditions for me.

All and all it was a lot of fun and worth the trip. Next time I am determined to reach both of my goals.

Mack, good report, good reading. I love your strategy for finding fellow bloggers, but if we ever run in the same race we'll figure out a more scientific method to make contact. My wife is from Susanville, I wonder if she knows your friend? Anyway, great race, great pacing, just a taste of things to come.

From Smooth on Tue, Jan 26, 2010 at 12:00:49 from 174.23.232.65

Mack, CONGRATS on the PR!!! I think mile 12 has a slight incline and that bridge gets me every time. You did AWESOME!!!

I have to chuckle about your trying to identify fellow forumites and bloggers. I did the same the first year calling every "mature" gentleman Kodi even though Kodi's real name is Mel. One year at Spectrum 10K, I stood at the start line next to a tall young man. He sheepishly asked if I was "smooth". I then called out "homer". You should have seen the reaction of those standing around us. Pretty funny! I'm glad you didn't ask that lady: "hey, are you smooth?" She might trip you! Haha!!! :)

Well, I regret that I didn't get to meet you. Next time! When's your next race? It is far away for you to travel to Utah.

GREAT JOB at Painter's. I predict many PRs coming your way! Keep it up!!!

From Mack on Tue, Jan 26, 2010 at 20:50:07 from 71.111.182.118

Flat, I agree, next time I have got to be more scientific about it. I got some really weird looks. Rich has lived in Susanville for about a year and a half. I assume your wife has been gone form there for several years?? He is the warden at the prison in Herlong(sp?). When he lived in Oregon we ran together every Saturday morning for years. We still get together from time to time for races. I can't get him interested in blogging here though. What is your next race?

Merri, Thanks for the encouraging words. I looked at your blog and see that you are very speedy and well under 2 hours for your half PR. Very impressive!

Smooth, Thanks for your kind words. The story about Homer is hilarious. Funny what you said about Mel too. I was looking for him at Painters thinking that statistically speaking he should be easier to find than anyone else. I was frustrated that I couldn't find him and then came to realize yesterday that he wasn't even there!!!

From flatlander on Tue, Jan 26, 2010 at 22:34:33 from 198.207.244.102

If he is associated with the LDS church, Rich might know my wife's parents, who are still there. Their name is Adams. A warden, huh? That's scary. My wife's sister actually worked at Herlong (she assures me she was not an inmate), but that was a long time ago.

3 Miler on the treadmill. Our son who is a freshman at BYU sent us a text today saying that while he is still not 100% sure, he is leaning towards not going on a mission. It was heartbreaking to us. My wife and I talked about it for a long time. Jumping on the treadmill, getting some endorphins and some time alone to think about it was very helpful. We will hang in there as we know that all things will work together for good if we keep our heads up and stay strong and do the right things.

Mack, that is a tough one. I can see a similar scenario at our house in a couple of years with our number 4 kid. We have learned with the older ones that most kids eventually work things out, but that doesn't make it any easier when something happens. Hoping for the best for you.

Keep the faith and continue to love him unconditionally. EVERYONE needs to go through a spiritual conversion, a change of heart. I am 100% certain that the Lord hears and answers prayers and all things work out for those who are faithful and diligent in keeping their covenants. Never give up hope! Best wishes to you, your wife and son!

Ran on treadmill while watching a football game from the 1980's. The Chicago bears beat the Green Bay Packers on Monday night football in October of 1985. Very sloppy game. 7 turnovers in the first half. The announcers were: Frank Gifford, OJ Simpson and Joe Namath. In the pre game show they showed pictures of OJ holding his brand new baby daughter Sydney and offered congratulations to him and his wife Nichole. Creepy!!

Yeah, it is old but that was a great season for the bears. I love buying these dvd's of old games and watching them during the cold winter months when there is nothing better to watch. The OJ thing was very creep! My wife walked into the room while I was watching it and said something like "gross, I can't even stand to listen to him." I agree. But it was sure a good game.

Beautiful sunny morning here in Oregon. My wife and I did some yard work for an hour or so. I then ran from our house to Baker Creek and back. AP=8:58. It was breezy and warm and felt like spring is on the way!

On the way back I heard 3 gunshots that were pretty close by. I didn't know if I should hit the ground and take cover from a psycho sniper or if Mr Farmer (his last name really is Farmer) was just out shooting at the skunks again. I survived so it was most likely the latter.

Didn't push myself as hard as Tuesday but still got a good workout.

Last night we took the youth to the temple to do baptisms for the dead. The counselor in the Bishopric who did the baptisms is a triathlete and is in great shape...except as I watched him I realized that his arms looked soft and round instead of strong and chiseled. It really drove home to me the need to incorporate weight training into my fitness goals. Not so much because of the way it makes me look but the way it makes me feel. Chiseled and strong feels much better than soft and round. I felt kind of bad having this insight at the temple. You would think I could have had something much more spiritual come to me. Oh well.

If you have ever seen the show "little people, big world" it is where they live. Never seen 'em though.

A friend and I have run the Helvetia half for the past several years. It's becoming a bit of a tradition for us. It draws about 4000 runners. It is beautiful scenery but very, very hilly. Despite that, I am going to try to finally go sub 2 on it. I came so close at Painters.

On the TM at the aquatic center while watching ESPN.

This was a weird run. First, I ate too much before the run started. Normally when I run in the afternoon or evening I eat nothing for about 4 hours and then have a clif bar and some water 30 minutes before I start. Tonight the Clif bar tasted so good I decided to have another.

Not good. My gut felt so bloated and heavy during the early part of the run that I even had thoughts of quitting.

After running for a long long time I looked down at the time and had only been going for 20 minutes. Right then I decided that I needed to do something new and interesting to keep my mind busy. I decided to make it a hilly run.

I started at 0% incline and  increased the incline by 1% for 2 minutes with a 3 minute flat recovery. So the incline went from 1% to 10% in incerments of five minutes (2 minutes on the incline and 3 recovery).

It was just what I needed to shake things up and give my mind a chance to do something other than complain about how bloated I felt. I got my entire 8 miles in and felt pretty good at the end.

I know what I need. I need less TM time and to get out on the roads more so I can have some variety.

Intervals on the TM at the Aqt center. Preset program: Fast at 6.2 and 1% with Recovery at 5.2 and flat. Didn't feel overly strenuous during the run but my left foot is a little sore today (Thursday).

Also lifted weights: Bench, incline bench, curls, tricep push down and crunches.

I decided today that I don't want to be "a runner." I think it would be better for me to be a highly fit person who enjoys running for the cardio component of my fitness. It is finally starting to dawn on me that true fitness has 3 parts: Strength, cardio and nutrition. I have always felt best when all three are in place. Any one or two of them is just not enough for me. I'm finally (over the past few weeks) starting to get all three back in place and I feel REALLY good!

From Mack on Thu, Apr 15, 2010 at 18:12:19 from 71.111.186.66

Flat, I am definitely going to stay here on the blog. In fact I don't plan to change my running at all (except to get better and faster). My plan is to just do a better job of being more consistent with my weight lifting and nutrition.

From flatlander on Thu, Apr 15, 2010 at 18:14:02 from 198.207.244.102

OK, good news. If I started lifting weights more diligently, maybe I could wear a singlet in some race :>)

From Rhett on Fri, Apr 16, 2010 at 13:25:27 from 74.32.222.202

I'm convince that you need all 3 of those to be a good runner. Over the past year I have not run more than 3 days a week, but I do a lot of x training with weights, cycling, etc. and I think I'm a decent runner. You just have to find what works for you.

From Mack on Fri, Apr 16, 2010 at 17:52:07 from 71.111.186.66

Thanks for that perspective Rhett. You are right, a great runner has to have excellent nutrition, good cross/strength training and high quality running workouts. So really my objective is to be a great runner.

In the past I have sometimes foolishly thought that running was enough and I could eat whatever I want, whenever I want, and as much as I want and not bother to lift weights. That has made me a plump, slow runner. Time for that to change!

From DonGardinero on Sat, Apr 17, 2010 at 17:20:27 from 75.162.162.213

It's tough to keep that balance. I am nearly 15 lbs heavier now than I was last year. I need to start eating healthier and not so much.

Are you in the stk presidency? What's your topic? I recieved a phone call last night asking me to speak on Sunday. I usually write my talks during long runs, but no way I can do a long run right now. Maybe I'll have to get on the stationary bike tomorrow moring and ponder. Good luck with your talk.

From Mack on Fri, Apr 23, 2010 at 18:45:27 from 71.111.186.66

Yeah, I am in the Stake Presidency so I get to speak in all three sessions of Conference. My three topics are: "Take time to be holy", "A law upon which all blessings are predicated" and "By this shall men know ye are my disciples".

Is your talk for Stk Conf or Sac Mtg? Whats your topic? I agree there is nothing like a long run for prep time (or in the case of a recovering Boston speedster a long bike ride!)

From Rhett on Sat, Apr 24, 2010 at 11:51:22 from 74.32.222.202

Mack, if you're speaking in all 3 sessions, I'm guessing you are the stake Pres. I'm sure your stake will be enlightened by your talks. The topics sound interesting. I found out this morning that pondering works just as well on a long bike ride as it does running, and since it was a stationary bike, almost better since I could put my head down and close my eyes and really get into it. I'm speaking in sac. mtg. tomorrow. I'm going to speak on how the strength of our testimony in the atonement of Christ will determine our level of commitment to and what we do for Christ.

From Smooth on Sun, Apr 25, 2010 at 18:19:26 from 174.23.172.155

Mack ~ How did Stake Conference go? Ours is this coming weekend, May 1 & 2. I would have loved to hear your 3 talks. Sound like great topics. I'm glad I don't have to speak. Hubby, on the other hand always has to speak and preside.

Rhett ~ I would love to hear your sacrament talk. I loved your testimony at our little devotional in Boston. I could tell you have a strong testimony of the Savior and are living a Christlike life.

Just think the world of you two awesome brethren!

Did my long run in the morning. It was hard on me! It was a very hilly run and the wind was nasty. I swear it was in my face the entire time both out and back. Not sure how that works but it sure seemed that way. Don't know how many mph it was but it was strong enough that the little political signs on peoples yards were bent nearly completely over.

I decide to cope with it in three ways: 1. Not complain because I think the people in Arizona run in this kind of stuff all the time. 2. See it as a toughening experience that will pay off on race day. If race day is windy, I'll be used to it. If it's not, it will feel easy. 3. I spent the last couple miles chanting over and over something to the effect of "why don't I stop? For no other reason than I am too tough to stop."

Mack you are too tough to stop. I'm impressed that you were out running with such a busy weekend coming up.

I just wanted to share with you my experience in sacrament mtg on Sunday. During the sacrament I reached down and grabbed my scriptures and opened to Luke 22 to read about the Last Supper. I never read the scriptures during the sacrament but for some reason did. As I was reading I read the verse where the Savior says to Peter "When though art converted; Strenghten thy brotheren." It hit me pretty hard that Peter who was about to become the leader of the church and had probably spent more time with the Savior than anyone had to become even more converted. This became my topic for my talk (which was really close to what I wanted to talk about anyways). It was one of the experiences where the person giving the talk was taught more than anyone listening feeling like the words I spoke were not mine, but coming from the spirit. I testimony of the divinity of the Savior and His redeeming love for everyone was magnified a lot.

Anyways, I just wanted to share my experience and would love to hear any highlights about your stake conf.

From Mack on Mon, Apr 26, 2010 at 20:10:54 from 71.111.186.66

Thanks for sharing your experience Rhett. It is really neat when the spirit works like that. Wow, and just minutes before your talk too. Nice that you were open to it and willing to alter your talk to follow the spirit.

Our Stake Conf was great! The spirit was there in rich abundance, especially at the Saturday evening session which always seems to be the case.

I always knew you were a great runner, now I'm starting to realize you are just as great spiritually too.

From Smooth on Mon, Apr 26, 2010 at 23:21:47 from 174.23.172.155

GOOD JOB putting in a long run before busy Stake Conference. I am happy to hear that it went well and the spirit was present and abundant. I agree that the Sat. evening session seems to be more special perhaps those who come are "cream of the crop". I always enjoy that session better. We have 15 units in our stake so we meet in different buildings with satelite feed from the Stake Center. But the Sat. one is less crowded and more intimate.

Have a GREAT week!

Morning run at JD Park. Beautiful sunny weather and a light cool breeze. I had the whole park pretty much to myself except for a couple of city workers out working on the baseball fields. Spent most of the time pondering some of the real cool stuff I have been reading in a biography of Abraham Lincoln that I got for my birthday.

I'm embarrassed to admit it, but my legs were still a little tender from Saturdays run. It's a bit frustrating to be that slow in recovering. Maybe I need to get better with my nutrition and more consistent sleep. I think part of the problem was Saturdays run was the first time in a long time that I was on pavement (instead of the treadmill) and also fierce winds were my enemy and hedged up my way. Couldn't be that I'm getting old...

My 12 year old daughter ran the first mile with me and then turned around at the 1 mile point and ran back to give her a total of 2 miles. We had a nice conversation. I had never thought of running as a way to build/strengthen my relationships with my kids but it is sure turning out that way with her.

Okay ... I have got to ask ... I have been trying to figure it out myself but have been completely unsuccessful: Are you a forum flyer? I see your posts on all the flyers' blog.

Nice 5K!

From Mack on Fri, Jun 25, 2010 at 21:11:07 from 71.111.186.66

Yeah, I have been posting on the forum flyers site for about 5 years under the same name of "mack".

I don't post that often though so I only have about 400 or so posts (not much really, for 5 years).

I don't really feel like I fit in completely there. Everyone is cordial and all but I don't feel like one of the family. Probably because I'm kind of reclusive and don't meet up with everyone at races and get togethers and stuff. Although I did once do a run with Cougar when I was out at BYU for a professional conference. And I did see Rhett fly by in a blur at a Painters half. Other than that I'm pretty annonymous there. I just kind of like posting and such without really going to the next level I guess. Sorry to ramble.

How 'bout you? DO you post over there or just here?

NICE run with your daughter! I wish I had started running at a younger age and the opportunity to build relationships with my kids through running with them. It was my oldest son who got me into running. We both ran our first two marathons in ST George. we had run together a handful of times when he came to visit during the holidays...of course he had to slow down for me. My dream is to run Boston with him, not together but in the same race.

Happy running to you!

Teena- Wow. Cool. I had no idea you were "gump chump." I have always enjoyed your posts over on the Forum Flyers. Now I'll enjoy them even more.

Smooth- I didn't know that it was your son who got you into running. That would be neat to run Boston with him. He must be pretty fast for you to say that you would not be running side by side.

Rhett- You're right, it is so nice to run with the kids. I have learned that if I just stay quiet while we are running they open right up and talk like they never would in a different setting. Do you have teenagers yet?

DoG- I tried to send a private message but couldn't figure out how to do it. I agree that was really weird. I would have done the exact same thing you did.

From Mack on Fri, Jul 23, 2010 at 14:16:59 from 71.111.186.66

Teena, Yep, barking is just fine. These guys are vicious looking. I run by them nearly every day and I usually bring my pepper spray. Even with it I'm not sure I could fend them both off. But at least I'd have a fighting chance. Fortunately the lady that owns them is a responsible pet owner and keeps them secure.

Rhett, Yeah I live in the country outside of a small town in the Willamette valley of Oregon. We live along a 3 mile long dirt road that dead ends. There are only about 15 homes spread out over that three miles. It make for a great place to run because there is so little traffic. But there are a few dogs as is always the case in the country. How 'bout you? Are you a city or country dweller?

From Rhett on Sat, Jul 24, 2010 at 13:25:05 from 74.32.211.9

Mack, sounds like an ideal place to run. I live in a small town in the middle of the desert on the Colorado River of about 50,000 with no other towns within 40 miles. If I run south I can be out of town in less than 3 miles, but there are no quiet lonely dirt roads nearby, so I'm usually running with the cars. But there aren't a ton like in a big city.

Nice 3 mile TM run at the Aquatic Center before work. Intervals: 5.5@flat-----6.5@1%

I bought a book on Saturday called "The Spectrum" by Dean Ornish. It has given me a lot of motivation to adopt an eating style that is mostly fruit and vegetables with a little bit of meat.

And the most important thing I have taken away from this book is that at least for the first three days or so, abruptly switching to this way of eating is probably going to make me feel miserable. But if I stick with it, within 6 weeks I will be hooked and will have a hard time ever going back to McDonalds and cookies and cake and ice cream etc.

This rings so true to me!!!! All I have to do is take out the word eating and insert the word running and that is exactly the way I became a runner. It all started with reading a book on running. Ican't remember what it was called, but it was by Jeff Galloway. It took about 6 weeks of sticking to it (and many more books and magazines) and now I'm so hooked I could never go back to a non- running lifestyle.

I have become more and more aware lately that the speedy runners around here are very lean. I am not lean. But I will be and as I combine leanness with consistent training I am going to get FAST! And that's pretty exciting.

I agree with everything you said. A couple years ago before Boston for about 4 months I decided I would only eat "REAL" food... nothing packaged or processed. Basically it was mostly fruits, veggies, grains, rice, beans, organic dairy, and a little meat. I never ever felt better, but the first couple weeks were really tough. After that I didn't even want the bad stuff. Here's the bad part though. It only took a couple days of eating bad food after Boston and I was back craving the bad stuff again.

I think this principle applies to many good things. They say it takes 21 days to establish a good habbit and 1 day to break it.

Very much enjoyed this entry, good job on the diet. I have played around with that some and I certainly eat less meat than I used to. I suspect this diet is a scientifically sound, unlike most of what's out there. Can't wait to see your times start dropping!

From Mack on Wed, Sep 29, 2010 at 12:00:45 from 71.111.186.66

Rhett, Thats inspiring to know that you have tried it and it works and also to know that even someone that puts up the kind of times that you do still sometimes struggles with wanting to eat the garbage.

DoG, It has taken me a while to work up to it too. Friday I ate nearly a whole bag of Oreo's by myself and just had one of those moments where I said to myself "I'm done living this way." So far it feels great.

Flat, The cool thing is that it really isn't a "diet", it's just a life long way of eating. Kind of like our running isn't an "exercise program" it's a lifestyle that we enjoy and plan to continue throughout our life.

Usual Thursday morning 3.5 mile run on BCreek.

Still eating large quantities of  vegetables and fruits (with just a little lean meat thrown in here and there). I feel full all the time and have lost  6 lbs in one week of eating this way.

I have read that you aren't supposed to lose more than a couple pounds a week. But I'm not really trying to lose any. I'm just eating tons of great food so I will recover from my runs faster and have more energy throughout the day. I will just let my weight go wherever it naturally wants to go. I hope it keeps going down because that will make me a faster runner.

I'm patiently waiting for my taste for junky food to go away. I think it will take about three weeks.

It will happen. Keep up the great work. 6 lbs in one week is amzing.

I will probably join you eating super healthy after I get back from Olando a week from Mon. I'll have 4 weeks to get my body in beach shape before my Belize trip.

I've packed on some muscle over the last 4 months, now I need to shed the fat that is hiding it so my hard work can show.

That's really great progress on your new eating lifestyle. I really need to do something like that. Running takes a lot off naturally, but if I ate correctly I would be a better runner even at the same weight.

Nice afternoon run between sessions of conference.

Ran from the top of shalburne mountain down to greenfill park. The weather was stunningly beautiful. Blue sky, sunny and about 70 degrees with a gentle breeze. I felt like I was running in the middle of a scene from a calendar or a painting. In every direction there were  beautiful green pastures and trees with leaves turning orange. A small stream wandering along the side of the road. Only a rare car that drove by. No dogs. Wow, I wish every run was like this.

Thanks Flat, Are you still in Portland? I thought about coming up to meet you and join you for a run but decided not to for a couple of reasons. One, it has been a VERY busy week and it would have been pretty tough to squeeze it in. Two, I seriously know that I couldn't run at a pace that would feel fast enough for you!

Hope you had a great visit though. You sure got some of our great fall weather.

I felt incredibly light and strong so I ran a bunch of Fartleks. I would run two telephone poles fast and then two easy and then three fast/three easy. Just lots of mixing and matching like that. Nice 3 Mile tempo run on the TM. Peaked at 6.5 speed.

There was a girl about 20 years younger than me on the treadmill next to me. She had hair that was just a little too blond and teeth that were a little too white. She was dressed too fashionably to be a runner. She just didn't look like a runner. I was determined that I would stay on the treadmill longer than her to prove to myself that a middle age bald guy can still hold his own. I was prepared to go as long a needed to prove my point. Unfortunately I looked at my watch and realized I had to get to another commitment sooner than I thought. In disgrace I ended my run at 3 miles. She ended hers about 2 minutes later. I'm not the suspicious type, but I think she might have been holding out on me just like I was on her. Oh well.

Rhett, We pretty much run the same pace of about 9:30. It's kind of an interesting relationship though. She complains quite a bit about having a side ache for most of the run and then blows by me at the end and beats me by a block or two. What I'm working on is getting her talking about things while we run so she forgets about her aches and pains. All and all it is a great joy to run with her!

Nice interval workout on the TM at the aquatic center before work.

I saw this guy covered in tatoos and about 60 years old in an electric wheelchair. He must have been over 400lbs and was hooked up to oxygen through his nose. He was in the pool doing light aerobics (sans to O2). He then came into the weight room and sat in his chair doing some weight lifting with dumbells. I was so impressed with his willingness and effort to improve his obviously difficult situation. It also made me appreciate just how nice it is to be healthy and in good shape.

The devotional was great as usual. It always gets me in the Christmas spirit. It was just one of those weeks at church that was spiritually uplifting the whole way through. I wish I felt that way every week, but then maybe I wouldn't recongnize how great it is.

Nice job. How's the weather up your way.

From Mack on Tue, Dec 07, 2010 at 10:30:41 from 71.111.190.57

The weather has been cloudy and cold. We usually get a ton of rain and a little snow throughout the winter. So far it has mostly just been cloudy and chilly. Perfect running weather!

3 Mile Tempo run on the TM at the aquatic center. Had a good conversation with Dwayne about the Ducks chances against Auburn in the national championship game. Bottom line is neither of us are too optomistic about Oregon's chances, but you never know till the game is played!

Also did 15 min cross training on the bike and rower and lifeted weights. I've been slacking off on the weights for several weeks so I went real light.

Nice job, Mack. I've been slacking on the weights, too.

King of slackers here, it's been 6 months I think.

I think the Ducks have a good chance. It should be a great, high scoring affair.

Ran on the TM at the aquatic center in the evening.

A big, heavy set woman was the only other person in the weight room. She came up to me when I was at about mile 6.5 and said "I just have to see how long you have been on that thing". She was shocked to see it had been over an hour. Think of how impressed she would have been with some of the real hardcore runners that could have been going on 3 hours or more.

Morning run out to Baker Creek and back. It was overcast and cool. The road was a little muddy but not bad. This wasn't a particularly good run. I just never really got into a comfortable rhythm. Oh well, some are good, some aren't but I still do 'em anyway!

Cold is not too bad when you are dry. I'm glad you two are still running together. That is great!

Lunch time cross training. 30 min on bike (random at level 7) and 10 min on rower. Then lifted weights.

Lately I have been experimenting with sloooow lifting. For instance on the bench I take about 10 seconds coming down and 10 seconds going up. I go to about 90% of failure and only do one set. It feels really good! As much as I enjoy running, I think when it comes to feeling deep down good after a workout weight lifting is the holy grail.

Slow lifting sounds intriguing. I haven't lifted any upper body weights since right before my Belize trip. It is amazing how fast muscle that isn't used is lost. On the good side (at least from a runner's view) I've lost 5 pounds, which I assume was mostly upper body muscle.

From DonGardinero on Thu, Dec 23, 2010 at 02:09:51 from 67.2.115.193

Mack, I used to be heavy into lifting weights in my younger days and I always read in the muscle magazines that ligting slowly is the better way. Keep it up. I really need to start lifting again. I was going pretty good for a couple of months and then I just stopped.

DoG, Yeah lifting (especially slow) is great. I did a ton of it too back in my younger days.

Rhett and Flat, I hope you had a Merry Christmas too. Sorry I didn't respond sooner. With all the things I have had going on I have been a little AWOL from the board. Not from working out though. In fact I have actually got a lot of runs in but just haven't got around to posting them yet. Have a Happy New Year!
