AM - turf warmups + 3 on hilton, 6:02 pace. calves are showing some delayed soreness from the hard 3 on monday, if they're still letting me run around 6-flat though i think i'm okay. first night of 4+ hours of sleep in a week lol, maybe i needed it

AM2 - 11 on sokol, 5:54 pace. basically a mirror of yesterday's second run except this time my legs feeling dead(arguably worse than yesterday) didn't show up in my pace. i even one-upped it by running my last 6 miles in 34 minutes this time. sokol makes you work for every split, and i'm about 80% sure this is the fastest pace i've ran on the course, and 100% sure it's the fastest for any run at sokol longer than 3-4 miles. i'm honestly more excited about this than the sunday or monday runs lol, this course has broken me mentally many a time and it felt good to show those uneven grass hills who's boss

AM - turf warmups + 3 on hilton, 5:58 pace. calves are still tight but a bit better than yesterday I reckon. rest of the important leg muscles feel good despite the jump in training intensity this week, i'm probably switching the second workout of the week(today) to another aerobic run though.

AM2 - 11 on sokol, 6:01 pace. first 4 miles felt like my legs were working harder than the pace my effort was correlating to, but after that things got more in sync. yes i am bitter i needed a 5:15 last mile to get the pace into the coveted 5-minute range and only pulled out a 5:27.

AM - 3 on hilton, 5:59 pace. might manage to run a 100-mile week without ever starting a run past 7:30am

AM2 - 7 miles very easy on hilton. legs aren't falling apart but these last few days have been more than they've had to handle in a long while. could be ending the year with a good month of training if i get another 4 weeks of this in

AM2 - 11 on mural, 5:59 pace. felt pretty easy but at the same time not sure how much quicker the legs could have gone had i tried. they feel good afterwards though, as opposed to feeling like they got ran over by a bus like they have after every other run this week. it's understandable; take out the easy 7 yesterday and warmup/cooldown on monday and you have 78 miles at 5:58 average per mile for the week. not bad :)

AM - turf warmups + 3 on hilton, 6:00 pace. the early fast shakeouts are getting a little easier physically every morning; unfortunately, there are no muscles to condition for waking up at 3 and being out the door by 3:25. i somehow manage regardless

AM2 - 11 on mural, 5:58 pace. took a fair bit less recovery time between AM runs compared to everything last week and my legs were definitely extra ornery as a result. not hurting, but just no real charge or pep. managed to force myself to pick it up a bit at the end and cover the last 2k in 6:42.

PM - 5 on mural, 5:56 pace. wasn't planning on tripling, but when it's mid-70's and sunny in december, i can't miss the chance to get a shirtless run in. it's not just my right: it's my responsibility. almost exactly 5 hours between the end of the second run and start of the third, and a good chunk 5 hours was spent on my feet at work. pretty good stuff.

AM - 4 on hilton, 5:59 pace. we've got a storm hitting us early this morning(but not by MY definition of early), so it was very windy out there even if it hadn't gotten wet yet. hoping i can beat it out again(that's what s... nevermind) to fit in another morning run

AM2 - 4 w/u, 7 x 200m w/ 1" jogging rec, short c/d for 7. averaged 31.1

swapped my usual morning coffee i have between AM doubles for an energy drink today, i don't know if it was the sugar alcohols(all 1g of them) or something i had for dinner or what, but even on the warmup my stomach felt off despite having the same protein shake for a meal that i've had between every morning double the last 9 days with no issues. anyway by repeat #7 it felt like i was getting punched in the stomach with every step so i stopped there despite wanting to go for 12-16. usually it feels like my aerobic system gets tested before my legs themselves but this one felt pretty easy, my legs just haven't ran much faster in years. gotta re-learn some speed.

AM - 4 on hilton, 5:55 pace. a full 30+ degrees colder than this same time yesterday, and that's without a very bitter, very gusty wind i had to deal with the entire time. call me crazy, i think i preferred the weather yesterday. also hilton was pretty muddy from yesterday's storms

AM2 - 11 on sokol, 6:03 pace. still cold, still windy. right hamstring tightened up around mile 7, i would have done my usual shtick of trying to close in like a 5:30 to get the pace under 6 but i could tell it wouldn't have done the muscle any favors. felt pretty lackluster during the run, was expecting the pace to be very ugly. more like ugly duckling

AM - turf + 4 on hilton, 5:57 pace. haven't had a reason to mention it but i've had a blister on my index toe from the tight toebox on the fly's that's been giving me hell the last week or so(every time i put on shoes it takes about 10 minutes for the limp to fade from adjusting to the pain). anyway the pain started fading yesterday and the blister had darkened so i thought i was good to pop it; incorrect. entry is about to get nasty but basically the blister was right behind the base of the nail, and as the blister swoll it pushed the nail up. I assumed popping the blister would just get everything back to normal, but instead under the blister i see the nail base now starts like halfway farther up the toe, and that other half is basically a gaping hole over the knuckle barely being covered by the deflated blister. it's absolutely gross. put a few bandaids on it trying to keep that hole closed, i honestly don't even know how to approach this besides ignore it and hope it fixes itself.

anyway with all that being said i was hesitant to run because i'm sure it wouldn't help, but i've been on a nice streak and i'd hate to lose fitness over something this stupid. would you be shocked to know my sock was bloody after this; not sopping but still

ignoring that the run felt super easy; perfect weather(high 40's, drizzling, no wind) but not sure if i'll see it again for another run today. and all because of a toe-tal farce of an injury.

AM - 4 on hilton, 5:55 pace. felt pretty easy, as it should have with yesterday being mostly forced rest. toe hasn't healed up yet but no bloody sock/bandaid post-shakeout today at least

AM2 - 10 on sokol, 5:56 pace. thought i used up all the extra energy from yesterday on the first run, guess i had some left because this one was a breeze. like the sokol run on tuesday my hamstring tightened up in the second half, so i called it a mile or two earlier than i'd have liked.  it was cold out and my feet went numb fast so had no idea what to expect after the run(although i was prepared for a ruined sock and/or to see bone), however nothing more than a slightly bloodied bandaid. nice.

AM - 4 on hilton, 5:59 pace. thought today was gonna be an off-day due to some apparently violent storms hitting early but they hadn't started by the time i woke up so i got to squeeze this in. it might have not started raining yet but it was extremely windy... and also 72 degrees. almost worth it

AM - 4 on the treadmill at 9.0 mph. calves felt a step or two away from straining something; i think that's partly on my legs always straining a little bit more on treadmills though. still, i will exercise caution with caution of exercise

AM2 - hour on the stationary + sauna. covered 17 miles in the hour at high resistance, felt like i loosened up my right calf which was giving me some pause for the AM double. probably moving back to just 60-70 minutes in the morning; i enjoy the extra mileage from the shakeout prior but with my timeframe to run the only options are treadmill or asphalt. I already knew my legs didn't hold up well under consistent treadmill running, but figured maybe my bias against hard surfaces was unjustified. nope! and i will now continue to avoid running on sidewalks and asphalt like the plague

AM - stationary + sauna. probably ready to start running again

noon - 3 on hilton, 5:44 pace. anyone familiar with tapering would be shocked to know a couple weeks of hard training followed by a couple days of light cross-training meant i felt very good after loosening up the first 5 minutes or so. since the calf is still probably a day or so from being 100% tried to keep it controlled and not to go too fast and still ended up under 5:45 pace, lol.

PM - dynamics and strides on the turf. covered a bit over a mile; gonna count it as a mile

AM - 8 on mural at 4am, 6:16 pace. very windy. kept the effort pretty light, your hand is sort of forced running on a grass field in the dark and all. wanted to go about 20 minutes longer but the start of mile 8 i took a step and my toe started hurting with every step so i knew it'd be in my best interest to bail... after finishing that mile in 5:50, obviously. anyway took off my shoes right after expecting a horror scene but nope, nothing. it may still hurt but it's mostly healed up after a couple days off so i think i'm in the clear. nothing to speak of from the calf either, you love to see it

AM2 - 5 on mural, 5:33 pace. vent run; had a stressful morning which resulted in me doing the run i had slated for around 2pm at 10am. only about 4 1/2 hours of recovery between runs usually means running a little slower, which honestly might be a good thing: i ran the last 3 miles in 16:14(5:29, 5:30, 5:15), if i had ran 15 minutes i might have died from an overdose of self-satisfaction :)

AM - 7 on mural, 6:08 pace. another night run from waking up way too early; like i said yesterday, night runs on the grass cap the pace a bit but 6:08 pace felt real easy

AM2 - 5 on mural, 5:57 pace. pretty good run if you ignore that i intended to go for a fast 10 but my legs were completely drained of life. what i get for pretending 7 miles is shakeout territory and i could bounce back by 7am. nothing hurt but my stilts were just giving me nothing to work with. would have added a few miles to the early morning run if i'd known, but oh well. if i wake up stupidly early yet again tomorrow i'll get it right

PM - drills and strides on the turf.

AM - 10 on mural in the dead of night once again, 6:01 pace. if it weren't hard enough trying not to sprain an ankle on the grass with the limited depth perception afforded by nothing but the moonlight and my phone flash, it also got extremely foggy after maybe 5 minutes. it mostly settled by the last 3-4 miles, but when it was bad i couldn't see the ground more than 5 feet ahead of me. i try to refrain from the "what-if" game but i have zero doubt this one would have been at least under 5:50 pace if i had ran at like 8am when the ground was more compact, much less wet, and i could, you know, see it. almost makes you wonder why i didn't. what a stupid question

AM2 - 4 on mural, 5:27 pace. felt good! grass was still very wet, don't think the legs could have moved much faster(at least on this course) but aerobically it felt very controlled. basically a repeat of wednesday's second run sans the first mile that day where i was easing into it as the run wasn't planned. even ran the last 3 miles in 16:14 again! i got hurt last week and somehow came back in even better shape and i'm kind of terrified lol

AM - treadmill workout. 3 mile w/u, 6 x half-mile at incline in 2:30 with 60" jog recovery, plus an extra 20" or so ramping the treadmill back up

pretty good one, first repeat definitely felt the hardest and the last one probably felt the easiest, especially in the last 90" or so. felt less like my feet were pushing off the ground and more like they were stepping on landmines :)

AM2 - 5 on mural, 5:52 pace. pace is deceiving; we got heavy rain all night so mural was a mushy and muggy mess this morning to the point that i wasn't expecting to even push under 7:00 pace, and didn't bother doing my extended warmup before aerobic runs because i assumed this wouldn't be anything more than a jog. sike!

PM - drills and strides on the turf. we've got more storms hitting us tonight and the temperatures subsequently dropping to something more winter-y, but it's been nice having the high be a sunny 70's the last few days. the temp range to be comfortable in the "shirtless in tracksuit pants" fit is a tight one, especially in a more humid area. cherished getting to rock it for this

AM - 4 on the treadmill at just over 10 mph. back was noticeably sore waking up, likely originating yesterday morning from the fast running on a treadmill. the cure for such an ailment is obviously more fast running on a treadmill

AM2 - 6 on mural, 5:59 pace. after another night of heavy rain it was very sloppy on mural. frigid and windy as well.

PM - drills and strides on the turf. spent the entire ~15 minutes trying to think of the dumbest acronym possible for this routine so i can start putting that instead on my entries. still very windy; the backward strides i do towards the end of the routine undoubtedly looked like pure comedy. running tail-first into a tailwind, that's a new one.

AM - 4 on the treadmill at the gym at 8.0 mph. among the many choice terribly produced and uninspired remixes of bland pop songs that circulate the speakers at my gym, during the shakeout a trap remix of cotton-eyed joe played and i think that exact moment was the closest i've ever been to living my own personal hell

AM - 7 on the hilly texas backroads, "6:28" pace. my butt was sore from a 9-hour drive yesterday, my head wasn't there because my porked sleep schedule the last couple weeks had me waking up at midnight and unable to go back to sleep, and had a bad stomach cramp. also was 31 degrees, extremely foggy and quite muddy. does it get better? you know it does. the quotations around the pace are because TWICE i was chased by territorial dogs far out from their actual territory, both times i spent 30+ seconds yelling at them while backing away with eye contact. both times i forgot to pause the watch. 6:15 might be a little too optimistic but the pace was definitely under 6:20.

all my bitching aside, the fact that it was freezing out and i still mentally committed to getting out there makes the run a success in my book. that's usually the trump card for bailing a run for me. it's warming up in a couple days but the trade off is 15-25 mph winds constantly for the rest of my time here. because it's never that easy running here

PM - 5 on the backroads, 5:41 pace. pretty sure i've never broken 5:55 pace for an entire run on this course so that's a nice bounce back from the AM run, even if it's only a half-hour of quality. spent most of it thinking about the level of fitness i was at a year ago. looking back my mileage was mostly 6:30 at the fastest and anything under 6-flat would have me losing my mind. i've been far from consistent this year, but i've still come a long way. hopefully this time next year i'll have the same sentiment sans the inconsistency caveat. enjoy this next week all, my reign begins next tuesday. now watch me somehow tear my achilles in my sleep lol

if you were wondering, yes i was chased by the dogs again. the way out i did the same routine of assertively yelling at them to step off, however when one of them started chasing me on the way back i suddenly stopped, turned towards it, put my hands on the knees and hit him with the "who's a good boy" dogspeak. it about jumped out it's skin and high-tailed it away. hilarious. i would have tried petting it too, but alas

AM - off, aside from stretching and a little body-weight strength stuff. the family is going to dallas early today so didn't have the time. should probably get a run in the afternoon, although we're going to the alamo drafthouse to see a film and i wish i could have burned some extra calories to really push their "bottomless popcorn" on the menu to the test. kept the breakfast small so i should still get my fill; although i have a sneaking suspicion at the last minute the athlete in me will just order a salad instead

also got about 11 hours of sleep which was nice considering i don't think i've even slept 6 hours straight yet this month. athletes needing sleep is a lie conceived by one of those mattress companies that are clearly a front to money laundering

PM - 5 on hilly backroads, 5:54 pace. shawn carter once said "men lie, women lie, numbers don't". well, the pace was good, the avg HR was 146, but i'd be lying if i said i felt anything better than terrible. the uninitiated among you may think it's a byproduct of dead legs from sitting in a car for 2.5 hours to sit in a movie theatre for another 2, only to spend another 3 driving back just to immediately hop out the car and run before sundown. however, you and i both know the only reason the pace wasn't 4:54 instead was that it was fueled by a cobb salad(without bleu cheese or ranch, come on. it's a salad, not a milkshake. that's like driving to the gym just to smoke crack in the parking lot) instead of bottomless popcorn. a true shame.

AM - 7 on hilly backroads, 5:58 pace. nothing noteworthy besides another night of 4> hours of sleep. not only that but i couldn't get more than 30-40 minutes in without waking up again praying it was at least 4am(last time i did this it was about 12:30am and i gave up). my body is rejecting sleep like it's a cadaver, it's quite odd

PM - 5 on trail de paris, 5:34 pace. wasn't planning on running today on account of the wind being 20+ mph from sunrise to sunset(22 mph at the time of the run), but i think i was subconsciously working to alleviate the guilt i'll be feeling after partaking in the gingerbread french toast bake i'm making for christmas breakfast, and to a lesser extent the amaretto bread pudding my wonderful mother is making to go with dinner(although i should get a run in between the two, assuming a sugar coma doesn't knock me out)

on the topic of the run itself, felt good despite the crazy wind. this week is basically a taper to afford more time with family, but getting to a point where i'm regularly dropping controlled 5:20's like i did today... that's a scary thought :) hope i can get there soon.

happy holidays. spent basically all of christmas day doing work on my parents' house. got the closest i've ever been to death without drawing blood when a ~200 lbs window we were installing fell out the frame while i was standing under it. managed to catch it with very quick reflexes but another half-second spent stagnant i might have had my neck broken.

anyway by 4pm i'd been outside working for about 8 hours in a sunny 80F christmas, because what the hell is winter. felt terrible once we finally finished the work but forced myself out for 6 because i knew i'd feel better after, at least mentally. if it were grass maybe the legs would feel better too but all the asphalt texas miles haven't been kind to the stilts. all my available pegs being far past their expiration mileage doesn't help either. no watch; wasn't quick anyway

AM - 3 on the treadmill in 17:43. been battling a debilitating stomach virus since like 2am the day after christmas, and after dropping about 10 pounds so fast it'd make bobby southworth proud, i'm about back to normal. would have preferred to run outside but i was forced to the dreadmill because of some nasty storms hitting us to finish the year out. if a tornado doesn't kill us all we might get snow this weekend too

PM - stationary + turf routine. have some kinks to work out in the left ankle and knee, likely from the treadmill this morning. knee loosened up a little easier than the ankle did.

AM - turf. was gonna run but ankle felt a little off; finally ordered new running shoes so hopefully that helps.

PM - 4 on sokol, 5:54 pace. still very muddy, but not as bad as yesterday. felt more akin to june 31st than december(high 70's and VERY humid); we got record-high temps the next day or so before dropping down to about 10 degrees lower than anything we've seen so far this winter on sunday. something something bipolar weather something something reminds me of my ex

PM2 - turf again. ankle that was bugging me this morning felt a little off during work prior to the run earlier, and i felt it again on the drills. tried pigeon-walking and with one step it worked itself out and didn't give me grief on the rest of the drills or strides. was starting to worry i was gonna start the year injured, close call.

if i don't run 11 miles tomorrow morning despite whatever the world throws at me, this blog is forevermore a sham written by a fraud. just apply this to tomorrow's entry too, and all the other 2022 entries :)
