Race-that hurt, got out way too slow, sped up and the last 800 was a death march instead of the monster kick I was hoping for, but it was a big personal record.
Warmed up with Clayton, then did a few strides on my own before doing some on the track. My stomache felt a little more full than I would've liked, so that's something to work on. The gun went off, and I immediately cut into lane 5. We were on the outside waterfall, which was very favorable because then I didn't have to fight for position too much early on. The race strung out, and the pacer was a bit slow(he was supposed to lead us through 3k at 8:00), so I came across 400m at 1:08. I told myself to relax still. After going through 600m at 1:40, I was a little nervous still, but then I came across 800m at 2:12 and knew we were speeding up. Sometime around here Kejelcha and Eric Jenkins passed me, and I expected the race to speed up. It did. I came across 1600m at about 4:20-21. I remained in lane one for the majority of the race, and did my best to stay with the guy in front of me. Every couple laps, someone would fall off the front pack and I'd pass them. At halfway the leaders were at 6:45(or atleast that is what they announced), so I knew I wasn't too far off pace from my goal of sub 13:30. Clayton was a few spots ahead of me. Around the 7th lap, I felt a blister begin on the bottom of my foot and it hurt quite suddenly. I thought I had somehow cut my foot by the way it felt, but I kept pushing. The guy in front of me was pretty consistent with splits(or atleast I thought so), so it made averaging 65s pretty easy. I came across 3200m at 8:40, so right on pace to run 13:32.5. With 3 laps to go, I started to feel pretty fatigued. With 2 laps to go, I didn't think I could finish in the necessary 2:08 to run sub 13:30, and was afraid I was going to start going backwards and run 66s or slower. At 600m, I caught up to Clayton and tried to encourage him. At 500m to go, I passed him and then we were both passed by Tyler Day. With 400m to go, I had kinda given up on my goal and just wanted to finish, knowing that I would run a good time either way, but I was in a lot of pain. With 200m to go, I was hurting, but told myself that I'd spent way too much effort to slow down now. I came across the line right at 13:29, and I was pumped! It was cool to be in such a fast heat with so many talented runners. Clayton was 2 seconds behind me at 13:31. I personally think he could've ran faster than I did, but it wasn't his best day.
Long cool down after with Clayton and, for part of it, the NAU boys.

PM-3x "2 mile" at Intramural field. The "2 mile" was 4xloop at Intramural field, which GPS watches always measure way off what Coach measures with the wheel, but this time it wasn't measured with the wheel and GPS watches said it was long as usual, but that always happens on loops. We still had cones out to measure it. Went 9:55(I think), 9:42, 9:40. It was wet, but not as bad as I expected it to be. Legs felt good until the 3rd one. Jared and Clayton did the majority of the leading.

PM- 2x(1600, 1200, 800) at 4:23, 3:14, 2:07-8, 4:22, 3:16, 2:05. Not the greatest workout, but it was still a good one. In the second 1200 we started slow(67), but finished fast.

PM-3.15 mile warm up, 5 mile tempo, then cool down. The tempo had 1 mile at 5:20 before running 4 miles in the 4:45-4:49 range. It was hot, and I'm still adjusting to the heat and was running shirtless, but McMillan was in a black long-sleeve shirt and seemed to be doing just fine. With this I convinced myself I could finish the workout if he could do it and not overheating.

| | AM-workout at the old provo track. We did 3x(1000, 600, 400), at 2:44, 1:35, 62, 2:41(I led this one and did a terrible job at pacing it), 1:35, 62, 2:40, 1:34, 60. Felt good, traded off the lead with everyone. I didn't feel too great at the start, but as the workout progressed I felt better.

Race-2.5 warm up, strides, race where I spent a lot of time getting jostled and on the outside, saw 6 of my teammates qualify for nationals(!), then cool down. Time to prepare for the 5k.
Late race report: After the warm up, a prayer with the team, and strides, we got to the track. I felt pretty good, but I just tried my best to confident, but not cocky/too confident. Heading into the weekend, I had thought more on recovering for the 5k, and less on the 10k. Race plan was to let the race play out until 5k, then move up. Gun goes off, I get pushed around, but I'm in decent positioning on the inside middle pack. As the race went on, I got pushed to the back. Dallin and Michael were leading the first few laps and I was a bit surprised, but not too much. Dallin wanted a fast race and had been talking about it all season. During the first few laps I looked around and saw Brayden directly behind me. Later on in the race, I made a move to the middle of the pack and then after 2 laps, was pushed to the back again. When I was in the back, I looked around again, and realized I was just ahead of Brayden and in the same spot I was in before, and that my earlier move was wasted. After 5k, I moved up. I realized Rory had taken the lead and was pushing the pace. I was likely 30-40 meters behind the lead pack and I quickly made a move to the top 12. It hurt, but it wasn't terrible once I settled back into pace. Eventually I got right behind Rory and Tibebu Proctor from Washington and just sat on them. After a lap or so, I realized that Rory was pushing the straights and jogging the turns. I was annoyed with this and eventually took the lead from him with 7 laps to go. After a lap of leading, I wasn't feeling great, so I let Tibebu take the lead, and I just stayed in the top 4. Later Rory took the lead and I just sat on him until 200m to go. At this point Tyler Day passed me and I was pretty sure I was going to qualify, so I just kept the pace for a 100m, then let up just a bit. A few people passed me at the line, but because this is a qualifying round, it didn't matter. 2nd was the same as 12th to me. After finishing, I turned around to see Connor Weaver cross the line. I asked him if he made it(to the top 12). He then asked me the same question, then turned to his family, and they were screaming for excitment. Not only did Connor Weaver qualify for nationals, but Dallin Farnsworth did too, which was awesome! We ended up having 6 guys qualify for nationals in the 10k in total, and it was great! Way excited for nationals!

PM-3 mile warm up with Eric Hamer, strides, race, 8.5 mile cool down with Clayton.
Updated race report: Went out for a warm up alone, but quickly ran into Eric Hamer. He is one of the nicest people in the sport, and it was great to warm up with him to calm nerves and to have someone to run with. We were both on the world cross country team together in 2015, so we've known each other for a while. Anyway, on the warm up, I tripped on a wire fell forward on the pavement. Scrapped up my hand, knee, and jacket. It hurt. It took my mind off the race, but I would've much rather had something else to distract me from being nervous. After did some strides, got to check-in tent, stretched, did some strides on the track during Clayton's final lap, and was super nervous to know if he qualified or not(the announcers were only talking about John Dressel's dive for 4th, but not who took fifth, and the scoreboard had it in tiny letters, so I couldn't tell). Eventually I found out he was 5th, so that was good to hear. He said he went into it a bit too confident, and almost paid the price. I knew my heat was stacked, so I was going to do my best to race smart.
Gun goes off and I get into good position in the middle pack. The race started quick with Wyatt Didrickson leading the way for the majoriy of it. Through this race, I always felt like I was in good position compared ot the 10k. Robert Brandt took the lead with 5 or 6 laps to go and started hitting 65s. I moved up to the outside of the second line (so fourth) and stayed there until about a little over a lap to go. Then I was in 5th or 6th, but I knew we would have 7 qualifiers in our heat. At 150m to go, I was in 6th, and I looked back and saw Robert Brandt was close, but I didn't see if anyone else was close. With 100m to go, Luis started coming back to me, so I made a small move to pass him and finish in fifth.
8.5 mile cool down with Clayton, some wiht Garnica, and Tyler and Robert from UCLA.

PM-3x(800, 300) at 2:07, 42, 2:05, 42, 2:04, 44. Great workout other than the last 300. Got off to a bad start on the first and last 300s, but the last one Clayton was so far ahead of me that it was hard to find motivation to run fast even though I couldn’t catch him. It was windy, so we switched taking the lead on the 800s.
