I got up at 6:30 am and ran for about 35 minutes. Took 800 mg of ibuprofen the night before. What a lifesaver. Ran slow first mile then picked up the pace. Pushed it the last mile. Felt good. Will run another 6 tonight.

You guys have the early morning advantage over me. There's no way I can get that early and do even 3 miles. I like to sleep way too much.

Bill - not a good idea to push the mileage with the back pain. I would recommend cross-training (bike is the best, I think) instead of the extra mileage until it goes away.
Clyde - try getting up and running 1 mile before you go to work. Then maybe 1 mile during lunch break. This "always on the run" method works very well for me. The idea is that sitting for a long period of time is detrimental to your health and will hurt your fitness even if you are running 10 miles a day already in one workout.
I believe 120 miles a week works for some people not so much because you need those miles to develop aerobic fitness, but because such mileage makes it impossible for one to sit or be otherwise physically inactive for a long time.
Thanks Shasha for your advice. I will try those tests you suggested. I do go to the gym 3x a week and do circuit weight training. What machines Lifts are best for running?

Bill, I found this article that answers some questions about weight training for distance runners:
Back when I was more competitive I would weight train 3 times a week for only 30 min. each. I would do a circuit of biceps, triceps, stomach, pull-ups, bench-press, quads, leg-press, thigh, calf muscles, sholders and lats. I would usaally do the circuit 3 times with no rest between.
I was always tired at the end.
