4 fantastic miles, AP 8:31, in Balboa Park this evening with Ry. Tank and shorts weather. YAHOO!!! :)

Awesome dinner at Jimmy Carter's Mexican restaurant.

We are staying in the cutest place, The Inn at the Park. For whatever reason I can totally see Rylee living in a place like this in a handful of years. A cute king size studio right across the street from Balboa Park. LOVE IT! :)

7 totally fun miles, AP 8:48, with Ry this morning on the Maple Canyon trail and then at the Harbor. A few stops to see some fun things. Man, I really love this place. Maybe we should move here. Why not?

The day started with a run but definitely didn't end there. We spent the day on our feet touring the USS Midway and then the Cabrillo National Monument including the Old Point Loma Lighthouse and Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. Beyond amazing. :)

Another incredible day.

4 easy miles on the trails in Balboa Park. Seriously, why don't we live here? :)

After the run we ---

1. Saw the Corral Reef movie in the IMAX theatre in the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center

then

2. Kayaked the La Jolla caves -- TONS of sea lions that swam right next to our kayaks ... WOW!!!

then

3. Saw the night showing of The Rolling Stones in the IMAX theatre in Balboa Park

and then

4. Ate more crazy yummy Mexican food at the Ortega Bistro!

I'm wiped out but loving it!! :)

(Couldn't help but think about how much the kids would have loved seeing all of the sea lions!! Can't wait to come back with them next time.)

"Seriously, why don't we live here?"

1. Try to commute somewhere at rush hour.

2. Try to head out of town Friday after work sometime before 2 am.

3. Price houses.

4. Consider the plastic surgery needed to fit in with the locals. So Cal is plastic fantastic land.

5. Unless the weather changes soon, parts of California will be facing severe water rationing this summer.

On the other hand, I wish I could see, hear, smell, and feel the ocean. I even miss the fishy breath of the sea lions.... and the fog. How can I be nostalgic for fog???

Nice running this week even with the "crazy internship." How long is your internship? Where are you doing it?

From Teena Marie on Sun, Jan 12, 2014 at 13:40:05 from 65.130.247.17

Hey there Rhett!!! I am in my final two internships (they are short -- only 8 weeks each). This one is at the University of Utah Hospital in acute ortho/trauma. The hours are long (and seem even longer than they should since I have to take trax due to their being no parking). In other words, I leave at 6 and usually don't get home until around 7 p.m. I don't like that part at all because I feel like I am neglecting my family. Although I don't mind the internship, I hate the hours, so will be happy when it is over in 7 more weeks. The trauma stuff is super cool though. Plus, since I am in my final internships I get my own case load which is nice (but still don't get paid ... boo)! :) The 8 weeks following that I am at an outpatient ortho clinic which is only 10 minutes from my house. So that will be fantastic!!! I am still torn as to what I want to practice. So far I have LOVED everything. I guess it's good to know that I have options! :)

Nice running this week. I love the "easy 14 miles" with 6 x 800 repeats thrown in the middle. There is nothing easy about that run. You just make it look that way. Great job!

From Teena Marie on Sun, Jan 26, 2014 at 23:10:07 from 65.130.247.17

Rhett,

Maybe I just make it look that way in writing. In truth, I only wrote easy miles because the pace was so slow other than the 800s! The run in itself felt quite long and hard! ;-)

Rhett~ Oops, I guess I meant my 41st year! I'm already 40. :-(

Smooth~ I miss all my cross-training like mad! Sadly running is the quickest workout I know and I am very short on time right now. I am happy to at least be adding in the plyo. I'm trying to time it perfectly so I will peak just right!! Guess what? I had a candy bar yesterday that reminded me of you because I knew you would have loved it! It was dark chocolate with cacao nibs. SO DELICIOUS!! So you!! :)

Dale~ Plyos are definitely fun. Just have to be careful to not do too much too quickly to avoid injury! :)

Hey Fly!! :)

We are heading down after I finish my internship in 5 days. We'll check out the area, watch the local high school basketball teams in their state tournament to see if they would be good fits for our kiddos, and just generally see how we feel as we look at houses. Sophia already knows that she loves the running team down there. They give her the best competition in the USATF state and region championships and she gets along really well with their team.

Mostly easy with a bit of crazy in the middle: 4 x (800 m, 600 m, 400 m, 200 m) at 5K pace, 1 minute recovery, 5 minutes between sets. Each set was done at a progressively faster pace: 6:59, 6:54, 6:49, 6:45. Also threw in a couple of 400s (1:30 each) during the last couple of miles to work on running fast on tired legs.

Why do you want to move to St. George?

From Teena Marie on Sat, Mar 01, 2014 at 15:22:52 from 74.211.20.102

Burt,

Mostly because Rylee can breathe easier there (the inversion has been very problematic for her asthma and her last bout of pneumonia scared us pretty badly). Additionally Ry has some family here and the Desert Hills middle and high schools have great girls and boys sports teams (along with great academics). :)

13.25 wonderful miles on the trails in the immediate vicinity of a handful of houses we are looking at. My legs feel like mush ... some serious incline/decline. Ry ran 9 miles with me and Smo ran 4.25. It is so much fun watching Sophia float on those trails. I couldn't stay up with her (granted I had already run 9 but I'm not sure that I could have on fresh legs). She was kind enough to wait for me every now and then. :)

Our family is loving St. George. We have been driving to Cedar City every day to watch the 3A girls basketball state tournament (mostly to watch the Desert Hills girls). We think Rylee would fit in quite nicely. We already talked to the coach and various players. I think this is going to happen.

Desert Hills high is about a mile or two from where my wife lived and my mother-in-law has lived since the early '70s. (She is on the other side of I-15 on Nashua Rd.) Of course in the early '70s there was no Desert Hills high or Desert Hills or I-15 or paved roads in that area. I think there were fewer than a half dozen houses and not much else.

5 miles: 1 warm-up, 3 @ 6:53, 1 cool-down

Early morning meeting today so decided I would try to run a fast three miles with a nice mile warm-up and cool-down. Haven't run a crazy hard three miles in a row for quite some time. I was nervous but it went better than expected. The only real mistake I made was stopping immediately after the hard three (instead of jogging right into my cool down). For the first time in years I was in puke zone and I almost hurled a lung! As I am now in my forties this "puke zone" pace has become not nearly as enjoyable as it was in my thirties. :)

I know that many run faster than I do but for me this was a great pace. I was happy. :)

So I was supposed to have today off but the opportunity came up to watch (and even help) an MD with some x-ray guided cortisone shots into various parts of the body (SI, low back, rib insertion, neck, etc.). Very cool!! I'm amazed how specific those things can be when using x-ray.

To make the day even better I ran the fastest mile I have ever run in my life (that I know of). It was on the treadmill so maybe it wasn't accurate at all. But who cares ... it was awesome!!! I'm going to hit the track with Sophia next week and see if I can repeat it legit! :)

A.M.: 5.5 miles at 8:30, then my fastest mile ever (at least the treadmill said it was), then one slow mile.

*** Then I was adding up my miles for the week and realized that I only needed one more to hit an even 60! I hopped on the treadmill and slowly plugged along.

1 mile, 9:30

Got to figure out my intake before Boston. I feel the energy being zapped from my legs around mile 17. Not good! But on a positive note I have zero niggles! It's crazy that it is so close! Too bad about the forum flyers. I haven't been one to post much there or here simply due to lack of time. However, the forum flyers were definitely the first group of runners to really make me feel a part of things. Hence I am sad to hear that it has shut down. :-(

22 miles, which I am listing under easy miles because I'm not sure where to put them. The pace was slower but they did not feel easy by a long stretch!! :)

First 12 miles were FANTASTIC! Comfortable pace, with GREAT company: Ry, Fly, JohnnyV and Dave, on the beautiful BST. Nice hilly run with great conversation! With that said, whomever thought that course would be a good idea to start my 22 miler on was NUTZ! ;-)

When those miles were complete Ry and JohnnyV immediately drove me to the entrance of the JRP (so about a 7-8 minute break) while I re-fueled. I then ran home, which unfortunately was directly south, which happened to be the exact direction the wind was coming from at 12-20 mph. Needless to say the wind and I are now sworn enemies. Thankfully, I was able to manage an 8:19 pace for those last 10 miles, which I feel really good about under those conditions. However, I honestly felt so beat up afterwards.

Sigh ... I hope it will pay off at Boston. I'm a little worried that the 7-8 minute break and another 4 minute break on the trail (I ran into Andy D and we chatted a bit) may make this 22 miler not as effective as it would have been without those breaks.

Anyways ... that's all. :)

Oh ... and our house is under contract! I hope we find one in SG really soon!!! :)

Running 22 consecutive miles with no breaks is called Marathon Day! You'll have that chance soon enough. Good job putting your last deposit in the bank. That pace into the stiff breeze is impressive. I would have taken the easy way out, and loafed along at 8:10 pace with the tailwind. Next time, head south.

No matter how you look at it your going to be harder on yourself! Good job getting the run completed. two weeks and a wake up and you can put all that training to the test.....you will rock Boston Ms. Teena! How many days till you have to clear out of your house for the new owners?

Kam,

Next time I will DEFINITELY run with the wind at my back! :)

Rhett,

Thanks! Crazy how quickly everything is happening! SG here we come! :)

Slick,

We close and have to be out of our house on May 12th. Then we close and get into our new house on May 15th. We will more than likely stay a few weeks with either my parents or Ry's parents so that the kids can finish out the school year here. We are all getting nervous but excited. :)

19 miles, AP 8:45, with JohnnyV and Dave on the JRP up in Dave's neck of the woods.

Interesting, my first niggle this running season. Is it taper madness? It's nothing too bad, just some bizarre fleeting pain in the back of my knee. Feels like a tad bit of inflammation. I wore my Pure Cadence shoes more this week, but my pace has been relatively conservative (other than Wednesday). I did do something stupid on the long run though: I only carried 6 ounces of fluids and a half consumed Gu (that I unbeknownst had in my little water container pocket thankfully). STUPID! For some silly reason I thought there would be something on the trail. Oh well.

Haven't felt the need to take any ibuprofen yet. Hoping it's 100% by Monday morning. :)

Thanks you guys!! :)

Preparation for Boston this year seems quite different than any other race. It may have to do with being so pre-occupied with other things going on in my life, or perhaps a slight shift in why I run, I'm not exactly - it just feels different.

With that said, I really have no idea how things are going to go down. BUT ... this really is the first time in a long time that I am entering a race with zero niggles. With that said, I don't feel as if I pushed myself as hard as I have during other training seasons either. SO ... we'll just have to wait and see how everything pans out. :)

Thank you for all of the kind comments. :)

Definitely not what I expected! It was just not my day physically BUT emotionally it has been a fantastic few days. SO happy I ran. The atmosphere and feeling here was AMAZING. It was a little different because Ry and I decided to hang out with mostly ourselves instead of hanging out with friends (we just haven't seen each other enough these past 16 weeks and needed the time). I did LOVE having dinner with Andy and Becky and hanging out with Becky at the start line though.

One of my slowest races yet. Didn't know exactly what to expect but I really believed that I was capable of roughly a 3:25-27. Crazy how off I was. :)

In hindsight I made some major mistakes. BUT ... I did the best that I could do considering my past 16 weeks. So I am totally okay with the time.

For my own future notes I am going to outline some of my training errors:

1. Vast majority of miles were on the treadmill.

2. I did very little cross training and/or strength training (I had every intention ... just not the time).

3. These past 16 weeks of internships I have really failed miserably on the nutrition aspect: eating out of convenience and not making smart choices (I am approximately 6 pounds heavier than I usually am when I race ... I'd be okay with that if it were muscle ... but sadly, it's not).

4. Lack of sleep.

5. Lack of proper hydration, etc.: My left anterior tib and triceps surae were battling it out. Caught me off guard.

5. Wore almost new shoes that I was second guessing anyway ... but they matched the best with my brand new running outfit (which turned out to be a mistake as well ... oops).

6. Started out WAY too fast. But considering that it felt relatively easy and wasn't out of line considering what I believed I could do I just went with it.

The one thing I thought I had going for me was that I was absolutely niggle free. Turns out that wasn't even close to enough. :)

Also, I didn't dare get in a taxi out of fear of cramping up too badly so Ry and I walked the 2.5+ miles back to the hotel. That actually helped a TON! :)

Congrats to all of you who had a FANTASTIC race! The ones I know of are: Becky (Andy's girl), AmberG and Rad. I'm sure there are many others! :)

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Boston! :)

Rob - Agreed! I feel super lucky to have gone this year. :-)

Matt - Thanks! Boston is always a party! :-)

Fly - He certainly tried! Due to the crowds the best shot he got of him was on the jumbo-tron! :-)

Rachelle - Spending time with Ry was WONDERFUL!

Tara - Many thanks! :-)

Rhett - Ha Ha!! :-) Everything went really well with security. It was GREAT! :-)

Slick - The one disappointment I had was not running into you!!!

Andy - We LOVED spending time with you two. REALLY!!!! Becky had a stellar race. It was so fun spending so much time with her. :-)

Julie - Thanks!!! There was so much going on that week. Needless to say what I thought was just allergies (started a few days before Boston) has developed into something that has had me crazy sick this past week. I am now on antibiotics and increased asthma meds hoping to find some relief very soon. I think my body is just stressed and tired. Final internship (including final inservice, etc) is now complete but I still have a job interview in SG tomorrow, my boards on Wednesday, graduation on Friday (which I am the speaker at the hooding ceremony), and then moving the following week. In other words ... two more weeks of stress. I need someone to knock me in the head with a two by four so that I can get a few hours of rest! ;-) (It's all good stress though!)

Nothing since Boston. Not even cross training. I have been quite sick. I had very little soreness after the race (which was great) but have had zero energy and difficulty breathing. What started out with what I assumed to be allergies has turned into something quite ugly. Kept going back and forth on whether or not to try and force myself to exercise. Finally decided that I cannot risk getting more sick than I already am and that I need to use my energy wisely in order to get through these next couple of weeks. Still super happy that I ran Boston, just frustrated with my lungs/asthma/susceptibility to getting sick. I pride myself on being healthy so when something like this happens I have to remind myself that it's okay and that I can only control what I can control. Cheer up, Buttercup!! :-)

Smo and Sherm joined QuickFeet today! It was bittersweet! I knew they would love it but I also knew that many of my early morning runs with Smo would be coming to an end. Their practice starts at 6:30 a.m. at Snow Canyon High School so when work schedule permits I will have the luxury of running in the natural playground that surrounds the high school.

Zero running for me today but what a FANTASTIC day for Smo and Sherm!!

It was the USATF State Championship. We were unsure on how everything would go down with the move and all. Smo and Sherm joined their dream team, "QuickFeet", here in St. George 5 days prior to the meet. Here's how it went:

Sherm:

Raced both the 100 and 200 meters. Had no real training this year up until Monday. Struggled with the blocks (slipping on BOTH races). Started out behind, ended up taking third! Nicely done!!!

100 meters: 14.19 seconds

200 meters: 30.09 seconds

Sophia:

WOW!!! Huge PRs for her today! She looked SO strong!!! It was BEAUTIFUL!!!

800 meters: 2:45.69 (personal best by 6 seconds) and 1st place!!! The new STATE CHAMP!!!

1500 meters: 5.31.20 (personal best by 12 seconds)!!!! The race was INSANE!!!! She ended up taking second place, missing out on first by 1/100th of 1 second!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (First place ran a 5:31.19!) It was NUTZ!!! The four officials at the finish line were arguing on who won. THREE of them said Sophia BUT the main guy over the USATF youth in Utah, Tony Glover, said it was the other girl (and he has the last say). It was an AWESOME race!!!! Yeah, Sophia would have loved to have been the state champ but you can't sulk about a 12 second PR when you are running that fast!! I LOVED how her new coach talks to her!!! He was so excited for her and told her that you never worry about the placings at this point! Your focus is on your improvements, your times, your work ethic and your attitude! If you do that, the placings will come!

Regional Championship is in two weeks in Meridian, Idaho!! :-)

Oh and Smooth's post today reminded me of something: I probably need to find myself a good marathon training plan for SGM. My last couple of races that I have run without truly following some sort of plan have definitely had their shortcomings.

Can't decide how many miles I am willing to train a week right now. I suppose I am just truly enjoying not having to cram so much into such little time. Almost like I am on vacation sprinkled with fun work that I get paid for. It's just plain not normal!!!! :-)

From DaleG on Tue, Jun 17, 2014 at 22:28:18 from 152.216.11.5

She was on course for another PR but then around mile 17 she got really sick to her stomach and had to stop several times for restroom breaks. She's been pretty sick ever since with stomach issues. I tried to get her to go to the med tent after the marathon, but she wouldn't do it. I think she was delirious. I was actually surprised to wake up that morning and see that she decided to run even with her head pounding from the Trigeminal Neuralgia. She's tougher than I am, that's for sure.

Smooth and Rhett :-)

Nationals are in Houston, Texas: July 21-27th.

We have been discussing how we are going to go about it all morning. In addition to it being a lot of money (flights and a hotel room for a week for a minimum of three) it also takes place during the same week that Rylee has a basketball tournament in Vegas.

Right now it appears that I will be taking Sophia and Sherm to Texas while Ry will take the others to Vegas. We will make a final decision this evening. At this point we would be going for the experience (Sophia has aspirations of being an All American within the next few years but has a ways to go in order to fulfill that dream). It's a lot of money for the "experience" but my gut tells me that it is not too much money to invest in a dream. :-)

I know that not many people look at this blog, but for those few of you who do this message is for you :-)

As you know, two of my kiddos (Sophia and Oliver aka Smo and Sherm) have been running for several years now. Once we moved to St George they became part of a running club, Quick Feet. They have admired this club for several years when they would race against their runners at the USATF State and Regional Championships for youth. Something about these kids drew my kids to them! Not only were they often the very best runners but their sportsmanship was amazing. In fact, Sherm became best friends with two of the sprinters who were on the Quick Feet team long before we moved here. Some people thought this was surprising because the two boys whom he became best friends with were also his biggest competition. Those three together would almost always place fist, second and third in their events, and usually it was a camera photo finish with it being extremely difficult to tell which one of them had actually crossed the line first. The fun part was watching them after the race was over. They would be jump around, handing out high fives and congratulating each other as they would make friendly wagers on who the actual winner was before it was announced. Anyway, it was this kind of sportsmanship, talent, and camaraderie that made us seek them out. To make a long story short (even though it seems like I am giving you the long version) these kids come from all across St. George and surrounding areas with all kinds of backgrounds. The coach never turns anyone runner away, regardless if they can pay club fees or not. The only condition is that they must be willing to put in their full effort. This includes training 4 days a week beginning at 6:30 a.m. (since it is often well above 100 degrees in the afternoon). Furthermore, the club helps each of the runners who do not have the funds to travel to compete. Unfortunately, the club has not been able to raise enough funds to get all of the runners who qualified for the National Junior Olympics there (it is in Houston, Texas). And although I am grateful that we have the means to get our children there (as well as help some others) we still fall far short and it breaks my heart to see some of these young runners not be able to compete at this level simply because the funds are not available.

So, here is your chance. If you can donate even $5.00 it would be GREATLY appreciated!!! :-)

Jake and Rob,

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I know you both know just how much running can affect the lives of some of these kids. For some of these runners it's their road to a great education, for others it's a place where they can feel they belong, while there are others who are there because they simply love to run. It's amazing how many aspects of life that it can positively influence. So thank you!! :-)

Ironically my blog post today is about a "Munchkin Running Series" I'm organizing in my town. I think my favorite part about this sport is how the people competing against each other are usually the best of friends - at any age.

I'll also be glad to make a donation.

10 miles. AP 8:37. I logged these as all easy miles but they didn't feel easy one iota! I'm in Las Vegas with the fam. The plan was to wake up early and head out before the sun came up. Unfortunately Ry had a snore-fest last night and so I went and slept on the pullout bed with the twins. It was not comfy but they were kind enough to let me bombard their space. Sadly we all tossed and turned and consequently did not hear the alarm. It was 9 a.m. by the time I got out. It was 97 degrees when I started and 105 when I finished. I stopped at a couple of gas stations which were nice enough to let me fill my tiny orange juice plastic container that I had brought along with me with ice. Wow, that was not a fun run.

12 weeks to SGM. Time to get a plan drawn up. The plan is to get that done tonight. :-)

7 miles, AP 8:14.

This morning's run was one of the most vivid runs I have ever had. It was 84゜when I started at 5:20 this morning. The sky was black and filled with dark clouds. There was no rain in my neighborhood but lightning was striking both on the east and west side. The dark sky would be lit about with each jolt. Crack, boom! It felt a little eery, almost as if I was being chased. I decided since I was not being rained upon that I was safe. Not sure if that was a correct assumption but I went with it. At about 2 miles large drop of rains started falling. I turned around and headed back home but before I was there the rain had stopped so I headed a different direction. The lightning bolts were becoming less frequent but the wind began to pick up making the uphills seem much longer than usual. The sun began to peep through the clouds and the sky began changing colors, deep blue, purple, pink over the red rock. It was majestic beyond measure. A feeling of complete oneness with nature came over me. Not exactly sure why it affected me this me but everything seemed so alive.

I loved this morning's run.

Smooth~ Good question. I don't even remember. When I run with music I just put one earphone in so that I can hear what's going on around me. I had the music turned down low. My ipod was set at shuffle all songs. So anything could have been playing but I have no idea what. Hmmm, funny that I do not remember. But I do remember the cracks of the lightning, the booms of the thunder, and the whistle of the wind this morning.

So, this may be kind of crazy but eating radishes makes me feel very happy inside! I think it stems from my childhood when one year we planted a garden but all that came up was one broccoli plant and about 1000 radishes. St. George has been good to us for sure! :-) It's going to be interesting watching the kids compete at Nationals. Sophia is meticulous with how she plans her workouts, setting her goals, and making sure she looks at every angle of things (other runners, their times, etc.). She has top 20 in mind (which she is going to have to push but it may be possible if things line up). Sherm is crazy fast but hasn't looked at the numbers and the crazy fast sprinters who he will be competing against! It's going to be an eye opening experience for him. Realistically his times should put him in the top 40ish. :-)

Oliver jokes around about winning the whole thing, but truly he will be happy with whatever happens as long as he runs hard! :-)

Sophia on the other hand has very mathematically and very passionately worked towards a top 20 spot. Things would have to line up beautifully, and we have no idea how she will do running in the humidity, but she is going to give it all she has. :-)

I don't have a patient until 9 this morning and so my goal is to catch up my blog here! Like everything else right now, it has fallen quite behind! :-)

Houston was a FANTASTIC experience for the kiddos! It was so so so stinkin' HOT and HUMID though! I have no idea how people train and race in those conditions. We spent roughly six hours a day at the track to watch our kids as well as the rest of the Quick Feet runners. Most of the hours were in the sun (roughly 95-100 degrees) and humidity in the 70s and 80s! CRAZY CRAZY CRAZY!!!

Sherm and Smo did AMAZING! It was quite the experience for Sherm to race all these crazy fast runners. In Utah he has become accustomed to being among the very fastest! At Nationals, not so much! In fact, even though he PR's on his 200 he was definitely towards the slow end of the runners there!!

*********

Sherm's results (11 y.o.)

200 meters, 27.92 seconds

100 meters, 13.84 seconds

Neither of these times were fast enough to get him past the preliminaries. I'm telling you though, some of these 11 and 12 year old boys look like they are 16!!! I'm not exaggerating even in the slightest. It is CRAZY!!!! The cool thing was that instead of moping or feeling discouraged by his results Sherm was instead motivated to get even better and faster!! I LOVE IT!!! (He is even considering trying to figure out a way to grow a mustache because he said some of those boys his age had them!!!!!!)

*********

Sophia's results (12 y.o.)

800 meters, 2:41.6

Not her best, but crazy good considering she threw up 7 times within the hour of her race, including once while walking to the starting line. In fact, the officials asked her if she was okay and needed to sit out. She gave them the stink eye and said, "No, I'm fine!" She is one tough cookie!!!

1500 meters, 5:26.73

A new personal record and 36th in the Nation :-) She definitely got a taste of what it is like to compete with the best of the best and it has lit a fire inside of her that I believe will never go out! She has already made a two year plan to become an All American (meaning you have to place in the top 8). :-) Her splits for the 1500 meters were:

300 m 1:00.66

700 m 1:29.5

1100 m 1:31.55

1500 m 1:25.02

Anyway, that's the update!!!! Gotta get to work!!! Hope everyone is having a GREAT week!!! :-)

Wow! Your kids are crazy fast Teena. When you said nationals were in Houston I thought that was crazy for this time of year. I grew up in Houston and that is always how the summer weather is. I don't miss the humidity at all. It makes the desert here feel tame. That is amaZing that Sophia ran that fast in the longer races in those weather conditions. She should be way excited with how well she did. I'm excited to continue reading about both their races.

You can tell because she is always bringing up different thoughts about running and creating different workouts that she thinks will help her get to the next level, etc. How cool to find something you are so passionate about at such a young age. I did not have that as a youth.

Jeff,

Absolutely! I still beam ear to ear when I think about my kiddos! I know you know exactly what I am talking about! I have seen the fb posts about your son Justin! WOW!!!! :-)

Dale,

Each kid has to find out what they are passion about, right? :-)

Rhett,

You are so right! I kept telling Ryan that I will take HOT and DRY anytime!!!! :-) The kids who were at Houston were unbelievable! So much talent. We would sit at the track about 6 hours a day and just marvel at what these kids can do. It is absolutely breathtaking!

20.1 miles (18.1 miles, AP 8:18, then 2 cool down miles with the twins)

Miles 1-7 by my lonesome. Started out early and it was dark, windy, rainy but BEAUTIFUL (except for the wind)! Sadly, I got so caught up in my thoughts that I missed my turn. I was intending to run a 6 miles loop and pick up Ry to join me for some miles. I was totally lost. Couldn't even see Webb Hill (which is my usual marker if I ever get turned around). Luckily I was able to flag down a cyclist who let me borrow his phone to call Ry so he wouldn't freak out! I was able to give Ry my coordinates and he met me 1.5 mile from where I was lost which happened to be Costco. I discovered a new trail that I like though, Milcreek Trail. :-)

Miles 8 -13 with Ry just making our way back home (his car is still at Costco, I suppose we'll have to pick it up later). :-) Luckily he had fluids because I had planned on picking some up when I met him at home at 6 miles! Ha!

Miles 14 - 20.1 with Smo, which forced me to keep my pace (actually pick it up a bit) for the next four miles even though I wanted to slow way down! Luckily I had the chance to slow down with the twins who joined us for the last two mile hoorah! :-)

Temp 81˚ upon completion. Fortunately, it didn't feel that hot.

Happy Saturday, All. Be careful out there! :-)

Matt, Smooth and Rhett,

Thanks you guys. I woke up this morning feeling much better but as the day progressed the stinkin' headache came back. I think it's stemming from my neck. I need to get one of the PTs to work on it for me. ;-)

8 miles, AP 7:56

Surprisingly, considering this headache I have been fighting, this was a great run for me. I woke up and felt fine (no headache). I started running having no idea what route or how long long I was going to run. I had a little over an hour that I could spend running but wasn't expecting to last more than 40 minutes. Needless to say, almost immediately I knew that I was going to enjoy running this morning. I can't help but wonder if the reason I felt so good was that I was expecting to feel so badly ... does that make sense? So when I didn't feel badly it felt twice as good because it was such a relief. I felt lighter and stronger than usual. So bizarre. Within two miles I decided to try and make it up Banded Hills Drive, which happens to be the road to the new airport. I've looked at it from a distance for quite some time and have even run up to where it begins once. It stands tall and looks daunting but beautiful. As I began running up it I immediately wished that Fly could have been there to tell me what the beautiful rock was that I was admiring. I assume the reason it is called Banded Hills is because there are these incredible white bands stratified into the rock. How does that happen? It almost looks like ribbon! The sun was coming up and it was AWESOME! In truth, it almost completely numbed the fatigue that was building up in my legs as I ran up up and up (I think the steepest portion is roughly .75 miles with about 400 feet of incline). When I reached the top more beauty awaited. The view was INCREDIBLE! I could see the whole valley, and just when I thought it couldn't get better I heard an airplane began to make it's way down the runway behind me ... faster, faster ... I look over my shoulder and see it take off in a westward direction. The whole moment felt beyond earthly. This makes the second time since I moved to St. George that I have felt this overwhelming feeling of being completely alive during an early morning run. I appreciated it today immensely.

Sadly, the headache returned this afternoon. Boo!

That is why we run! Awesome

I love all the description. It made me feel alive and want to go out on a run. I'm glad you had one of those amazing runs.

From fly on the Wall on Thu, Aug 07, 2014 at 14:46:17 from 168.180.63.241

Without a picture or seeing it, I'm guessing the white bands are gypsum, but that is a guess.

Nearly 250 million years ago those banded rocks were mud, silt, and sand on broad tidal flats at the edge of a shallow sea. The climate was quite warm and dry and parts of this sea periodically became isolated and evaporated leaving behind calcium and sodium which now form white gypsum veins inter-bedded with shale, mudstone, and siltstone.

You are probably surrounded by gypsum right now. It is used to produce sheet rock/ wall board. To the south of you (and elsewhere in the area) are gypsum beds thick and abundant enough to be mined commercially.

17 miles, AP 7:25 on the last 17 miles of the SGM course! Holy crap, was not planning on running that fast! Rachel has been inviting me to group long runs for quite some time but I always have opted out because they start so stinkin' early! Today I went. :-)

Met at the St. George Rec. center at 4:30 a.m. Cockadoodledoo!!! A bunch of us jumped in a back of a pickup and headed up the route 17 miles. I started running with Rachel and Misty but ended up running most of my miles with Nicole and Casey (Nicole is crazy fast and was running a bit slower today .. she will run a sub 3 at SGM). It was definitely a push for me to keep that pace (even with two water breaks and no Veyo hill). Faster than I plan on running the marathon for sure. And the crazy thing is that after we finished Nicole went out for an additional five miles at a 6:00 minute pace! CRAZY!!!!!

Anyway, I think I will start running with this group more. There was probably around 14 of us and they were all FANTASTIC! :-)

Ry and I went out on the Red Rock trails for a nice mountain bike ride! The plan was to ride for about 75 minutes and then to do a short run. As has happened on so many other occasions, Ry and I got lost! Not smart in the heat! After 3 1/2 hours I had to get off the bike and sit down feeling completely dehydrated. My mouth was so dry and I was feeling crazy light headed and weak. Ry and I had both taken one bottle of fluids with us. I had a zero calorie sports drink and Ry had a regular Gatorade. Normally I probably would have been fine but I started out low on fluids secondary to not having much to drink since my longer run on Thursday (crazy busy days at work, and then driving to Vegas, etc.). I will not make that mistake again. We found our way back making the total bike ride roughly 4 hours.

I'm a bit late wishing you a belated happy anniversary! Or did I do that some place else? Anyhow, what a fun long weekend you and Ry had. :) :) :) :) :)

I'm amazed how you run 11 miles every other day like it's a walk in the park! GREAT runs this week! :) :) :)

Are you signing up for Boston next week? I don't have a BQ for 2015...hopefully for 2016 and I'll be 60 yo! :) LUVS!

Rhett,

Taper could not come a second too soon!!! ;-)

Smooth,

Definitely NOT a walk in the park!!! Mentally I'm struggling a small bit with running right now. I don't know about Boston. I keep thinking about it but I'm just not sure.

This was one of my tougher runs. I think mentally more than anything. Even though I have made some friends here in St. George, I haven't really found that core of crazies that I completely connect with: Shout out to JohnnyV (the person I probably have done more long runs with than anyone else), the Lintons, Christine 'n Ben, and of course, the one and only Smooth! Would at least one of you consider moving to St. George!!!!???

I'm sure there are plenty of crazies out here, and I absolutely love Rachel, and probably more than anything it's my fault for not really putting myself out there and attending the SG Running Group stuff ... just saying that I miss my crazies. :-)

Anyway, I thought a new beautiful course would make the lonesome miles a little less lonesome. My belief was that if I started in Hurricane (at my work) and ran through Sand Hollow and the Washington Fields that I'd not only have beauty but a nice gradual downhill. Not sure where I went wrong because other than a handful of miles it definitely did not feel as easy as I was hoping. When I entered it in Map My Run it said a total net down of roughly 600 feet. Which I suppose doesn't feel as down as I had hoped over 20 miles. :-)

Things got really tough for me around mile 13. I stopped and called Ry. He saved me by bringing my Smo to run the final 4 miles with me. Miles 13-16 all I could think was: "25 minutes and Smo will make everything better ..." "19 more minutes until Smo..." "15 more minutes and Smo will change everything..." 9 more minutes..." "Start looking for Smo..." "Smo will fix all of this." When I saw Smo I wanted to cry and laugh at the same time. I was so GRATEFUL!!

Anyway, another 20 in the books. :-)

Hope everyone is off to a GREAT weekend!!!

MORNING:

So I kept getting text messages on my phone about a flash flood heading our way. I looked out my window at 5:30 this morning and there was no rain in sight. I thought about just chancing it but then decided that I'd better take the warnings serious and run on the treadmill at home.

Finished the boring run and still no raindrops in sight. Stink it all!!!! :-)

7 easy miles, AP 8:56

Hopefully more miles this evening. Hopefully.

(So far today is going well, I rarely get a lunch break ... but looky looky ... here I am!!!) :-)

EVENING:

So the rainstorm finally hit, right as I was leaving work. Made for an adventurous drive home and meant another treadmill gig.

4 miles, very easy, high 9s.

My legs still aren't feeling quite right. They have been feeling heavy and stiff for about a week. Left hip external rotators and flexors are tight but nothing crazy. Haven't needed any meds, taping, etc. Just trying to be mindful of what's going on, stay hydrated and sleep and eat a bit better. :-)

Things seem to be improving somewhat each day but going to be cautious tomorrow and Friday and then decide on how to attack my long run this weekend. :-)

Registered for the Boston Marathon today. I suppose that commits me to at least one more marathon. I definitely need to find more running buddies for my next training season! Not sure if I can do another season of long runs mostly by my lonesome. Hopefully by then I will know more of the running community in my new stomping grounds. :-)

MY very best 20 miler EVER!!!

20 miles, AP 7 freakin 19!!!!! Can hardly believe it! (Granted it was on the course and included three 1-2 minutes hydration breaks). But still, 7:19, I'm ECSTATIC!!!

Decided I could NOT do another long run on my own so woke up early and met Rachel, her hubby, and some of their friends at the St George Rec Center at 4:30 a.m. and drove 20 miles up the course. We were kind of spread out into a few groups and I had told myself that I was going to try and stay with one of the faster packs until the first water break (which included Veyo so I knew it would be hard for me). Did it ... and felt great! I then decided I would stay with them until the 10 mile mark. Wow, still with them. I told them that I was certain to start to fade but Bruce insisted that my breathing was fine and to make it to 15. Got to 15 and was feeling it but decided to continue to push. At that point it was me, Bruce, Tom and Bryan. My new goal was 17 miles. Made it, but we lost Bryan. I was really feeling it but did a quick head to toe check and new that I could hang on for one more mile. I did it! I was so proud of myself. I told Bruce and Tom to push hard the next mile so that they could finish strong. I was feeling weak and had given myself permission to fall back. They tried to talk me into staying with them but I told them that I was SUPER happy with what I had did and wanted to just try and get my breathing where I wanted it. They agreed and took off. I am happy to say that although I dropped back I managed a 7:24 on that final mile [which I was certain was an 8:24 pace (my eyes were deceiving me)]! I finished about 20 seconds behind them. THRILLED!

Got home and decided to do two barefoot slow miles on my treadmill to cool down and loosen up. Followed by a contrast bath (6 minutes warm whirpool / 2 minutes ice bath x 3 = total of 24 minutes). I feel great!

Happy Saturday!

I think I am trained for a sub 3:20 at SGM if I run it right!!!! YES YES YES!!! That is a number I have been chasing for YEARS!!!!

BTW, Aaron Metler was starting his 20 miler with one of his running partners at the same time we were. They said they were going to run 5:16!!! So my excitement about my time today is SO SO SO relative!!! Hence, I really really really try to never compare myself with anyone but myself because when I compare myself to those runners who are faster I get jealous and when I compare myself to those runners that are slower I get prideful --- I think I'll pass!! BUT WOW ... 5:16!! That's stinkin' crazy lightning fast!!!! :-)

In other words, I got to her house and the lights were all out so I figured I was on my own. Smo ran the last 3 miles with me to keep my pace honest at the end. So Ms. Teena, that craving your talk about only reminds me of one thing, when women have a food craving it must mean that maybe there's an addition to the family coming?

I registered for the big dance as well! Not on the list though secondary to having put my maiden name back into my legal name so the last SGM race time didn't match. 10 miles, AP 7:39 (which is pretty much the exact marathon pace I am shooting for).

Granted, while I was running I took one fluid break (60 seconds), stopped for about 30 seconds when I ran into Rachel (because how could I not ... she's awesome) and then about 15 seconds picking up Smo for the last three miles.

I had not planned on running marathon pace. Was just shooting for around 8s. Things just fell into place that way. It was a comfortable hard which is very reassuring. It actually would have been a slower overall pace had it not been for Smo. I told her to keep me at about a 7:45ish pace. It was raining outside and I guess the cooler temps put some ants in her pants with each progressive mile since our last three miles were: 7:40, 7:30 then 6:35!!! What a NUTJOB!!!!!

Really hoping Smo will pace me the last handful of miles at the marathon. It'll all depend on her basketball schedule. They may have a tournament. I hope hope hope not. I NEED her!!

Getting nervous.

Oh no! Too bad about the cramps! Your time is still very impressive to me.

In the most simple terms:

First 17 miles: EPIC (didn't even feel like I was racing until after I crossed the halfway point)

Next 3 miles: Intentionally scaling back to try and hold the cramping at bay.

Last 6.2: EPIC FAIL

In a nutshell: I felt very much the same way one feels when they put a quarter in a candy machine and only get three small M&Ms (but on a much larger scale)! :-)

My last three marathons I have suffered some pretty severe cramps, but nothing like the ones I suffered yesterday. The last 6.2 miles I could only run roughly 800 - 1200 meters at a time before one would seize. When I finally crossed the finish line and I got to the grass where I could stop for a second to see my family my entire lower body seized up to the point that I literally and I mean LITERALLY fell to the ground and rolled around like a crazy lady screaming. Ryan, Rylee and Sophia were trying desperately to release the many different cramps that were seizing my legs that felt as if they were going to snap at any moment from the force of the muscle contractions. The pain was insane. Ryan finally got me up and I had to stomp and slap my legs for the duration of the car ride home. Once home I began to cry like a baby - but I'm not sure why. I wasn't crying because of sadness or pain, my body just wouldn't stop crying. Per Lowell's suggestion I immediately engulfed a bacon burger (which I hate) and some fries. The crying and cramping stopped shortly after.

That's it!

I truly believed that I was prepared (and was going) to run a sub 3:20. First world problem, I'm not going to dwell on it.

- Worked 46.5 hours M-F evening and tried to keep hydrated but nutrition and sleep were far from adequate.

- Horrible night sweats for the past several months.

- One of my best training seasons ever.

Splits:

7:20, 7:44, 7:17, 7:24, 7:20, 7:15, 7:18, 8:32, 7:55, 8:05, 8:08, 8:04, 7:28, 7:55, 7:13, 7:27, 7:26, 8:24, 9:09, 8:01, 8:34, 9:09, 8:35, 8:43, 9:13, 9:10, 2:06

With that said, had a GREAT weekend with Smooth, Lowell, Christine and Ben!!!! :-) :-) :-)

And 3:31 is still a great time!

Oh my goodness! That sounds like a nightmare! I once had my right calf seize up and I was desperate to chop it off. I can't imagine my entire body convulsing! I'm so sorry. That must be so frustrating considering all the hard work you've put into this training cycle. You'll get it, keep on truckin'!:)

I'm so sorry for the scary and painful cramps. I feel your pain. I have had many of those post-race vice-grip charlie horse attacks! Once you're down on the ground, you're at the mercy of someone to help you up and stretch those muscles out for you passively.

3:31 is nothing to sneeze at especially when you had to push through the ensuing cramps for the last 10Ks. You are one tough cookie, incredibly strong and resilient. You are a great runner! I am so proud of all your accomplishments. Recover well, my sweet friend! Thanks for spending time with me this weekend. I love you!!! :)

I looked for you before, during, and after the race. You did a good job avoiding me! :) I saw a few fast women who resembled you -- but realized they weren't you after I slapped them. Ooops.. Awesome 20 miler! You are speedy.

From Matt Schreiber on Tue, Oct 07, 2014 at 20:44:59 from 66.17.102.175

Oh, cramping.. I'm sorry Teena. I can somewhat relate with a 4:12 I ran last fall due to cramping. I do know all too well the crazy pretzel shape a calf can take on mid cramp. I do not, however, know about the lower body seizing up. It sounds like you really muscled through it. Your training was there Teena. You had a lot of miles going into this one. You still pulled off a 3:31?!? Awesome stuff. Quite a coincidence I engulfed a big 'ol bacon burger this weekend and for some reason put a picture of it on my blog!

The night sweats have to be related somehow. I've related my cramping to 2 things in the past - lack of looonnnngggg runs and dehydration/lack of salt. Sure seems like a bunch of sweating would be related somehow. Keep up the awesome training! You've got the 3:20. :)

From Teena Marie on Mon, Oct 13, 2014 at 22:13:17 from 24.49.99.147

Thanks, All!

That cramping I experienced did some major havoc on my legs. They both felt ripped to shreds until a couple of d ays ago when I finally noticed I wasn't thinking about them 100% of the time that I was weight bearing!!!! It was like someone had poured poison into them. I never have before experienced anything like it. I do believe that it may have to do with the "girly" changes I am presently going through as a result of my hysterectomy at an early age (runners can share things like that, right?). I have no proof, just a gut instinct. I have since gone on some over the counter pills that are meant to reduce night sweats. The change I am feeling internally throughout the day and the lack of night sweats I have had since I started them is substantial.

All my really fast long runs were done in the wee hours before sunrise, starting at 4:30ish in the morning. I did not sweat near the amount and that may have saved me. Such was not the case during the marathon.

Who really knows though. All I know is that I was prepared. I had one of my very best training seasons ever. I truly believed it was to be my day!

With that said, as previously mentioned, the extreme cramping throughout both of my legs did a number on me. The pain I felt for several days was pretty intense and I am only now beginning to feel recovered. I am cross-training at this point but not ready to run. Be it fear or something else I am not quite sure. But I'm not ready.

And, most importantly ... Marc, your comment cracked me up!!! Did you really give whomever a good slap??? Laughing hysterically if it is true!!!! :-)

Sorry, Teena -- I have this fear of being punched in the nose for assaulting someone during the marathon. If I had seen you I would have said "Hi TEEEEENA". My legs were a mess too -- but for totally different reasons. I started training at the end of August, with a single 20 miler. I was on pace for 3:30 until about mile 20 - then my legs were so tight, I could barely jog/walk. I'll be looking for you next time -- I'm really thinking of Utah Valley in June!

Kam,

Boston was pretty much what it should have been considering my lack of training. In a nutshell, it made me want to do it right the next time around. For some reason Boston is kind of my nemesis race. In all my four times running it I have only showed up truly trained and prepared once, and sadly, that was 2012 in the blistering heat!! Figures. :-)

Hey there Rhett and Slick! :-)

Have not decided what my running plans on now, per se.

I have had some blood work done recently and I have to figure out a way to increase the level of testosterone in my system (it is next to zilch) before I am left with no other option but to go on hormone therapy.

The past week I have been trying to do more strength training in hopes of this helping. I am still running a few short runs a week but it has definitely not been my focus.

I haven't been on the blog much because:

1. I have been insanely busy

and

2. It makes me want to run more! :-)

I will retake the blood tests in a couple of months if things start turning around, or sooner if things get worse (the fatigue, night sweats, etc.).

Wish me luck!! :-)

I will try to get caught up on my blog and all of your and our friends blogs soon!

Love you guys!

From Smooth on Mon, Oct 27, 2014 at 11:18:52 from 67.2.102.76

Testosterone, huh? who knew? TJ has had lots of night sweat episodes, may be he should have his hormone tested. I've had had night sweats on and off since in my 30s, more frequently in my 40s and lately once a month.

Best of luck with getting things figured out! Love ya! :)

Hi everyone. I'm still here, just have been taking a break from blogging. I'm still running, albeit not as much. I usually run 4-5 times a week for about 4-5 miles at a time. I've started swimming and mountain biking again and have been hitting the gym frequently for both free weights and the machines. My body and hormones are going through something crazy right now. I'm just trying to figure it all out and control what I can. :-)

I think about you all often and wish I had enough money to buy all my friends and loved ones vacation homes in my neighborhood! That's the truth. I'm also going through a melancholy type week after seeing "The Good Lie," the movie about the Sudan Lost Boys. You know those type of days when you can't figure out why the world can't be more kind. I'm sure my crazy hormones are partly to blame for my difficulty escaping this tiny funk I'm in. Anyway ... Enough said, I'm blabbing. Ha!! Love you guys! Happy Thanksgiving!!! :-)

Smooth, Rhett and Slick!

Hey there!!! Sorry it has taken me so long to respond.

Minus one thing, Christmas was GREAT! We spent it in Salt Lake. Unfortunately, I had to work through Tuesday evening and so Rylee and I went up a bit later than the rest of the crew. Sadly, on our trip up we decided to make a quick stop at the Costco in Spanish Fork to pick up a last minute Christmas gift. Rylee was driving. About 100 yards from where you turn into Costco there is a side street. A guy ran a stop sign that was at the end of this street and hit us pretty hard: T-boned right into the passenger side (I am relieved that I was the passenger and not Rylee). Although both Rylee and I have been quite sore (neck, upper back, etc.) it could have been so much worse. We are still waiting to find out if they are going to total out the car or if it is repairable. Insurance companies can be quite slow (especially during the holidays). We are back home in St. George now. I am going to try and go to work tomorrow.

Other than than the wreck, life is great. Until the wreck I was running 5 days a week. Only running 4-7 miles a day, per choice. I have also been spending more time doing resistance training, biking, swimming, etc. My most recent labs showed a slight increase in my testosterone which I attribute to the decrease in endurance training and increase in resistance training as well as the DHEA supplements they have me on. The increase is not drastic but it has reduced the hot flashes substantially. :-)

Going back on forth on whether or not I really am going to do Boston.

How are all of you??? I hope that you are enjoying the holidays with family and loved ones! :-)

From Tom Slick on Sun, Dec 28, 2014 at 14:02:01 from 69.171.160.237

Thanks Rhett and Matt,

It definitely wasn't my best race, but considering all, I'm okay with it.

One thing though, it did make me want to train right the next time around. I'm still just trying to get a hang of this working full time, spending time with my family, and running/exercising gig. I don't know how so many of you do it. I am in more awe of many of you than ever before. :-)
