16 miles at the Olympic Oval
*After finally turning in at 4:00 a.m. this morning I pulled my tired behind out of bed a little before 10:00 a.m. I looked at my phone and had a text from Matt saying I better hurry up and get my butt over to the Oval. That was just the extra push that I needed. :) Things just kept getting better from there. Right before walking out the door I got another text from my SSF!! She was going to the Oval as well! Then Rachel showed up with her! FUN TIMES!
*Ry and I took the kids to Macaroni Grill tonight for an early dinner. I could not believe what angels each one of them was!!! Seriously, five perfect angels!!!! 2011 is going to be a GREAT year!!!! So incredibly happy! :) :) :)
*Oh yeah ... was just browsing through my hubby's Men's Health magazine. Josh Holloway is the new Cool Water guy. DANG!!!!!!!!!! :) :) :) (Do you think he will mind if I tear that page out and tape it to my mirror????) |

Hmmmm ... not a great workout day at all. Ooops.
Began an easy run. My right lateral rotators have been misbehaving a bit. The hope was that they would loosen up and start minding after a couple of miles. They didn't, so untrue to my normal behavior I decided play it smart and get off the treadmill at 3 miles and hop on the elliptical. Had plans on doing more after I got home from the dentist today, but didn't. Maybe later tonight ... maybe not! :)
Sent a text to Matt. Hopefully he will be able to fit me in soon and realign my shifted hip/pelvis. :) :) :) |

PARTY AT THE OVAL

I had SO much fun this morning. I was a bit nervous to run anything over six miles, but it was wonderful! I was especially grateful that Matt was willing to meet me at the Oval at six bells. (Thanks Matt -- I owe you BIG.) From the very get go it was a PARTY. So many people were there, including: Allie, Rick, John, Steve, Randy, Peggy, Mike, Rachel, Brent, Nate, and Darin. The miles went by so quickly. Allie joined Matt and me for a handful of miles. Afterwards Matt and I commented on how effortlessly she runs (but, of course, it was but a leisure stroll for her). :) :) :)

** Our home is fighting off the flu. So far Sophia, Payton, Oliver and I have been victimized. I got reallly sick Saturday evening and although am starting to feel better I still feel a bit crummy. My pace on the elliptical today was pathetic (very low caloric intake) but I am trying to trick my body into thinking it is well! :) :) :) The yoga felt nice but a little hard on the tummy.

My body is still not where I want it to be in regards to tightness, pain, etc.
My mode of operation seems to be to get everything close to under control and then run a bit too early and hurt something else by compensating my form. However, I am learning. :)
Going to continue with low impact crosstraining for a few more days.

** Why do I always forget how much I ** LOVE ** to swim laps? I think it has been about 6 months since I have done any swimming. Once I got in it felt like I was home. Seriously, there is something about swimming that completely soothes me. When I am finished I feel so so so good. I think there is something about the way it stretches my muscles (especially my core) and provides a very calm, relaxing and peaceful environment. I just put on some good R&B and enjoy the movement and moment. | |

* No problems to note. The first couple of miles I felt a small tugging at my right lateral rotators, but they all loosened up by mile 3. I really made an effort to run relaxed -- that seems wrong to coorelate effort and relaxed in the same sentence. The kicker will be seeing how I feel in a few hours (especially considering I will be sitting through 4 hours of basketball). I am optimistic. :) :) :) |

I have interviews in Philadelphia next, but I am trying to postpone them until I hear back from the U. Should be within a couple of weeks. I am beyond nervous ... it could go either way. I really wanted to get in close to 15 miles today but it didn't happen. I ran my first 7 miles w/an AP of 7:47 and then bang ... I felt a sharp pain in my anterior compartment. There are some pains that I know I am okay to run through, but my anterior compartment is not one of those. I turned off my watch. I finished with a super easy 3 mile jog. I haven't had any anterior compartment pain for close to 9 months, I'm not sure what happened. I came close to falling a couple of times while slipping on some black ice ... perhaps that was it. I felt fine once I got home, so that is good! I will see how I feel on Monday and take it from there. :) |

Just when I hit 3/4ths of a mile a lifeguard signals to me as I am turning. I look around and notice nobody else was in the pool. DANG -- they were closed!!!!! It was only stinkin' 8:30 p.m.! Oh well ... at least I got wet! :)

Our family spent much of last night at the Respiratory ICU as we said our goodbyes to Ry's sweet grandma. It was bitter-sweet as we watched her mortal body shut down. She was 86 and absolutely wonderful.
Rest in peace, Grandma Bessie. I love you.

I am so mad at myself.
I have been fighting a cold for several weeks, but exercise didn't seem to make it any worse. However, I knew better than to run in the rain and wind yesterday.
Last night I felt like I was hit by a dump truck. I took a half of an ambien and tried to sleep it off. Still, I couldn't sleep. This morning I spiked a high fever and had an asthma attack. I literally hurt all over. When I couldn't walk across the room Ry took me to InstaCare. A chest x-ray and blood work confirmed that I have pneumonia. They gave me a shot in the hip and sent me home with four prescriptions. Sadly, I can't seem to keep the meds down. If this continues I will have to be hospitilized.
The worst part is that I am not allowed to exercise or go anywhere (including school) for one week. I have been crying because I will miss Grandma Bessie's viewing tonight and funeral tomorrow.

Still very sick, but only about half as miserable as yesterday. :)
Went to Grandma Bessie's funeral. Ry and the kids went early to participate in the viewing. My parents took me just in time for the family prayer and funeral. I tried to stay as inconspicuous as possible in my surgical mask, yeah right. Ryan had pre-warned everyone that I was sick, so no one tried to lay any big ones on me. I am so grateful that I went. Ryan gave a beautiful talk about Grandma. | |

Still sick (as to be expected) but improving. I still feel very weak but it feels more like lack of calories than being hit by a dump truck. I suppose that is a good transition. Feeling better enough to begin panicking about missing school (which I assume is also a good sign).
I was hoping to wake up feeling well enough to walk a mile or two on the treadmill. Sadly, I don't think that is going to happen for a while, definitely not today.

Although my muscular aches and pain are near gone, as of this morning I still could not breathe well. Yesterday I felt dizzy and light-headed all day. I attributed it to a lack of calories. This morning I felt the same. I decided to call my asthma doc to see if I could just come in and have my breathing checked. Glad I did.
In short, my numbers were HORRIBLE. I knew they would be bad, but not this bad. Even after my inhaler my large airways were functioning at 56% and my small airways at 38%. No wonder I was feeling so dizzy. I was immediately given a breathing treatment (nebulizer with bronchiodilating meds). I got really shaky and a bit nauseated, but it worked. After 10 minutes of treatment I felt like I could take a real breath. They retook my stats, most airways were functioning close to the 90s and my oxygen intake had increased dramatically.
What it comes down to: my pneumonia is cleaning up nicely, but my asthma is being stubborn. They quadrupled my advair intake for 2 weeks, and I have to take my prednisone (I hate that stuff). But if it will allow me to breathe, I will do it.
I asked about exercising, specifically running. He said that I could try as soon as I felt up to it, but that I will likely not make it very far for a couple more weeks.
Come on inflammation ... be gone!!!!
(Since the breathing treatment I feel so so so so SO much better.) | |

After yesterday's breathing treatment I became a little too optimistic.
Woke up this morning not feeling as well as yesterday after the treatment, but still better than I had felt yesterday morning. Decided to try and go to school.
Made it to two classes, but now I feel exhausted.
I am feeling a little blue today. I really thought I would have kicked this thing by now. Looks like I still have a ways to go. Onward and upward.

Breathing not too well today. Went in to the doc's for another breathing treatment after my physics test. Numbers low again.
Been instructed to have a breathing treatment every 4-6 hours for the next 7 days. Sent me with a nebulizer and enough medicine for the treatments so that I could do them at home. Grateful for the means to get better ... hasten the day. :) | |

15 miles (14 by myself on the JRP, AP 8:31 -- I would run easy 1200 meters and then pick it up for 400 meters. Felt surprisingly good. Started feeling fatigued at mile 11, which came later than I thought it would, so very happy. Then 1 mile with Sophia and Oliver once I got home.)
Had to get my long run in today since the twins are getting baptized in the morning. :)

** BEAUTIFUL day today. The twins got baptized this morning and were so stinkin' cute. It is days like these that make me realize how good life really is.
2 cute stories:
Friday night (just shy of midnight) Ry and I realized that all of Oliver's underwears are colored. Seeing he needed white ones for the baptism Ry took off to Walmart. In the morning we gave Oliver his new undies and explained to him why he needed white ones. He looked at us like we were insane!!! "What? That makes no sense," he says, "... everything doesn't have to be white!!" He got this genius look on his face, smiled and continued: "Look at me ... I'm not WHITE!!!!" :) :) :)
He is such a SMART boy!!! I am so lucky to be his mom!
Later (after the baptism before the confirmation): Livvy and I were out of the dressing rooms and in the chapel way before the boys! As we were sitting there I thought I'd take the opportunity to review what was going to happen next. I say, "Livvy, pay close attention to what your heart feels like when Dad confirms you." I continue, "You remember why he is going to give you a blessing, right?" She responds, "Of course, Mom. He is giving me the Priesthood!!!!!!" :) :) :) Dang, she is cute! Needless to say, we had a quick refresher course.

I am so dog tired! :)
Beautiful but WINDY afternoon. JRP with Vuyk hill and Puke hill extentsions. Started out too fast running into the wind. My energy was zapped but I had put so much effort into the first half that I refused to give up on the second half. (Was happy to stop twice to talk to people I saw on the trail for a minute.)
1 mile warmup, 9 miles at 7:53 (logged all at MP although the miles into the wind were slower and vice-versa). I was SO looking forward to a nice slow cooldown mile (10ish pace) with Sophia. She had something else in mind and forced us to run an 8:55. She is so stinkin' fun! :) :) :)
I am literally beat. Why does the wind take so much out of me?
I need to do hip abduction and lateral rotators strength training, but I am going to put it off until this evening. Hopefully I can will myself to doing it then.

GREAT day for running!
Met Matt, Smooth, Kathie, Karen and LuzyLew at the JRP this morning! Weather was FANTASTIC!!!
18.5 with mostly Matt and Kathie. It was absolutely wonderful having such great company, wonderful conversation and fun pace. Someplace around 17.5 miles Matt said that we were at a 9:01 AP. Game time. Matt and I took off to see how much we could bring the pace down in the last little bit (he says that is cheating, but I don't agree). Ended up with an 8:55 AP for the total 18.5. He pushed me HARD that last mile!!!! Stayed with him for about 1/3 of a mile, then he surgered and I couldn't match it. Caught up to him, we slowed down for a bit and then I decided to take off to the finish. I thought I was on my own when I heard him right behind me. We jostled for the first position, in the last moment he out did me!!!! STINK!!!!! It was a good matchup though! :)
Got home and ran 3 more with Ry and Sophia (who joined us for the first mile)! It was heavenly! AP 8:44. I feel incredible! :) :) :)
Side note: Kathie ran so so so well!!! She has been worried about Boston -- she shouldn't be! She ran about 30 seconds per mile faster than she thought she would and looked great at the end! I also was able to see Smooth, Karen, and Luzylew run in. They all looked INCREDIBLE!!!!! I am very worried about Smooth's cold though. REALLY REALLY REALLY. I have never met a tougher woman. How she ran today is beyond me! |

10 by myself on the JRP right before the kids got home, AP 8:09. Not sure what my deal was, but this felt quite a bit harder than I expected. Just no zip in my legs (and I was even wearing new shoes). The zip better come back before Saturday!
1 mile with Rylee, Sophia, Oliver and Livvy (Payton did not want to come). We started out together but then Oliver slowed down a bit while the girls took off like bandits. We saw the girls at the turnaround, Sophers asked me to run with her so she could have a more accurate idea of her pace (since I was the only one with a watch). She ran an 8:45 pace with me, but she was slowing down at this time. I'm guessing she averaged about an 8:35 or so.
Side note:
Spring break can't come soon enough! Does anyone know how to construct truth tables for digital circuits and/or construct an AND gate using only NAND gates? How in the heck is this physics??? It is NOT in my physics text, yet is on my lab homework that is due tomorrow. I asked my Physics Teacher Assistant and he said he didn't know how to do them and has no idea why our lab is requiring us to. So lame!!!! Anyone? Help!!! * A special thanks to Fonz for helping me! Not happy, not sad, not thrilled, not mad, just kind of ...ish. :)
I have not run a 10K since the D-News 10K in 2009. It showed. I never could find my rhythm and at times pushed too hard and at other times didn't push hard enough. Although this is my 10K PR I am not satisfied and hence will have to run another one at some time. Hands down the funnest part of this race was running back to get Ry and then run with him to his finish. He told me in the beginning that he was not going to race it but just enjoy himself. It was so nice having him there with me. :)
Absolutely wonderful fun day which included running extra miles with Rachel, 9 holes of golf with Ry and then dinner with Brooke, James, Matt, KristyAnn, and Ry.:)

Was able to run a little bit with Dawes at the beginning (less than a mile), but he was finishing as I was starting. Other than that I was on my own. Slightly boring, but needed to be done since tomorrow is crazy busy. Still hoping to fit in some miles in the morning, but don't know how many.

** Toying with the idea of finishing this training cycle using Pftiz's 70/18 plan (starting with week 7). Can't decide, it seems like it might be a little much for me but thought I'd give it a shot for a couple of weeks. Am I playing with fire? I really don't know. It might be beneficial for me to follow a strict program because it will be an incentive to run the right paces at the right times (intead of too much or too little, which is often my m.o.). Hmmmm ... I just don't know.
** A bit later: Yeah, the more I think about it the more I think that schedule would be too much for me. Sigh. Perhaps I will follow it's guidelines but reduce the mileage by about 10-15%. One 70 mile week and I let my bloated ego get the best of me. Oh well ... at least I have come to my senses before I did any damage. :)

8.3 miles by myself on the JRP, AP 7:39. Felt strong. It helped that a high school cross country team was on the parkway. I was inspired by how relaxed, fast, and smooth so many of them ran. Watching them put me in a good place.
2 miles with Sophia and Rylee, AP 9:40. Rylee left Sophia and me with about 3/4ths of a mile to go. She took off and soon disappeared. It was fun watching her long legs turn over rapidly as she opened up her stride and hit a higher gear. :)

Upperbody strength training: Tried to isolate several different upperbody muscles/groups of muscles and come up with some new exercises that I could add to my good 'ol standbyes.Was a lot of fun. Used medicine ball, blue resistance cord and dumbells. I think the most challenging was the handstand dips against the wall. Obviously I did not make this exercise up, but I had not done it before. I am no where near being able to come all the way to getting my arms to bend at a 90 degree angle before coming back up. I'll work on it! (Definitely going to be a bit sore tomorrow) :) |

Another big week for me. I am very happy with how my body is handling this higher mileage. The only thing that has bothered me is my tummy. Nothing too bad, but it just feels a bit sick quite often. Lame. I do think I will take a step-down week next week just to be safe.
We had a GREAT group this morning! I hope I don't forget anyone, but I am going to try and see if I can name all who were there: Me, Smooth, Kathie, Rachel, Lowell, Toby, Karen, Matt, Brooke, Tom Slick, Marty, Adriane, Kim, Kendi, Rick, Annie (my SIL) and Nic (my brother). :) :) :)
I ran the first 5.7 miles with Annie and Lowell. Annie is running her first marathon on the 16th (Salt Lake). There is something magical about the first! I loved being with her and listening to Lowell's hilarious stories. According to Lowell's watch we ran about a 10:15 pace.
My next 14.3 miles were with an AP of 8:21. I ran 5 by myself, then 3 with Matt, a couple more by myself, a tad with Brooke, a couple with Smooth and Rachel, and then a couple more by myself. Changing running partners like that made the run extremely enjoyable.
Smooth had OJ, chocolate milk, yogurt and bananas for everyone at the end! I just love her!!!!! :) :) :)

*** Okay, I have a question: I seriously have been eating way more than I usually do. I am hungry all of the time. Should I really have this drastic of a change with my appetite with 20 extra miles per week? Also, I am craving things that aren't looked upon as healthy: like salt. I have allowed myself to eat whatever I am craving, but that could come back to bite me. I am not concerned about weight (at least at this point), I am more concerned about how the foods I am craving are going to affect my running. I eat healthy most of the time, but also have allowed myself to eat big cookies and quite a few protein bars. That's another thing, are protein bars really healthy? I would love to have the time to eat the way I should all of the time, but I often eat what is convenient (and fruits and veggies just don't fill me up). |

All our kids' games got canceled today, so we postponed our run until 8:00 this morning. Ran the first 11 with both Matt and John, and the final 9 with John. We stopped a couple of times to refuel and use the bathrooms. (I drank 20 oz of fluids and took 1 gu.) I was a bit worried that I would struggle during this run, but strangely, I felt great throughout (other than being a little wet and cold at times)! :) YAHOO!!!! Three high mileage weeks for me and I feel fantastic! I am definitely taking this coming up week much easier though. Want to play it safe! :)

Just kind of ...ish again. Not awesome, but certainly not bad. :)
A few mishaps: gun went off while I was in the POP; dropped my inhaler twice and had to run back to get it each time; and I got lazy around mile 9. I had it in my head that I wanted to run a sub 1:40 (hard-hard but not max out) and once I knew I had that my umph kinda disappeared. I know I didn't run as hard as I should have because once I saw Andy (whom btw, did AWESOME) with about a mile left and he told me to pick up the pace, I realized I had plenty left in the tank. Oh well, at least there won't be any recovery time involved! :) I didn't think about running this race until a couple of weeks ago when my SIL asked me to pace her the last 10K of the full marathon. That is where my heart was, and that was by far the best part of the day (that and seeing Brooke so many times during my half -- I just love her and was grateful to toss my inhaler to her at mile 7ish so I wouldn't have to worry about that dang thing dropping again)!!!!

What a morning!!! :)
I planned ahead so that I could skip classes and watch the Boston Marathon. I slept in with the plan of watching it on television as I ran on the treadmill. Showtime. I turn on the tv and NO BOSTON MARATHON!!!! I hate DIRECT TV!!!!! Never had that problem with Comcast. Anyway ... after spending way too much time on the phone with Direct TV (who informed me that I needed to upgrade my package if I wanted to watch the marathon) I found a site online that had live coverage for $4.99. Done deal. But then I couldn't get my order to process! I was getting upset. Finally the order went through. The women had just hit the halfway mark. I still wanted to run and so I frantically took apart my sectional couch and put the long piece on its side in front of my treadmill so that I could sit my laptop on top of it. I had two sets of earphones, one hooked to the laptop and one hooked to my ipod. It was SO SO SO fun listening to my music in one ear and the marathon in the other. The cowbells, cheers, etc. sent an excitement through my body. Also, I had my cell phone in the cup holder so that I could get the splits via texts of our friends running it! It was GREAT!!!! I am done with my run but am still enjoying tracking everyone's progress. Smooth sent me some pics from this morning. Everyone looked GREAT and ready to rock 'n roll!! GOOD DAY!!! :) :) :)

Ry dropped me off at Wasatch Blvd this morning to begin my run. :)
1 mile on Wasatch Blvd, 1.5 miles up the canyon then back down to the JRP, on the JRP for 1.5 miles, then home.
I wanted 14 miles and misjudged the distance so had to add the parkway portion on. Next time I will know better. I feel good, just not a lot of zip in my legs and got really hungry mid run. Had 11 ounces of gatorade with me and drank every last sip. If these higher miles don't end up paying off I am going to be so mad!!!! :) :) :)

I have never felt this strong on a 22 miler before. The pace felt very comfortable and I was able to really enjoy this run and Matt's great company. I wanted to see if I could push it the last three miles. I was thrilled with how good I felt. Thanks for a GREAT run, Matt!!! The hay is now in the barn!!! WAHOO!!!! :) :) :)
Funny story: I got back to my car and immedicately began to freak out because I couldn't find my phone. I was sure that someone had broken into my car and was relieved only by the fact that I didn't bring my wallet with me. As I began to pull out of the parking lot I saw Ry and the kids pull up. Not having much control over my emotions I almost broke out in tears and told them that someone broke in my car and took my phone. They told me to pull over and we would look for it. As I was checking for scratches around the key hole they sat a package on my seat. When I got back in the car I immediately noticed a little note that read: "It's A Mother's Day Miracle (one week early)." Inside the box was the new G2X phone. I was so excited ... I hated my phone!!! I can't believe they let me suffer with panic for so long!!!! :) :) :)

Legs were a bit tired, but not too bad. Only stopped while I waited to safely cross the freeway on/off ramps and when I saw Matt right before this portion of my run was complete (I avoided the lights by jayrunning ... is that a word?). Matt was flying! The thought of having to keep a similar pace for a whole 26.2 miles to hit a 3:25 at Ogden seems overwhelming. A sub 3:30 seems more realistic. But who knows. I have to remind myself that I ran 22 on Saturday. Really, I just have no idea at this point.
2 cool down miles (except I sprinted Homestretch Hill - .25 miles - towards the end. Just had to see if I had anything left in the tank. The hill is around a 4.5% grade, nothing too awful, but definitely enough to know you are running a hill when you are tired).

I am super excited that my friend, Fonz, had a successful lottery and is now registered for SGM. After years of trying to convert him to running marathons and he trying to convert me into running 5Ks a deal was struck: He would register for the SGM lottery if I would run a 5K. However, if he did not get in through the lottery then I could never bug him about a marathon again! I am so so so excited that he is in!!!! Little does he know that I am going to try and talk him into qualifying and running Boston!! He could totally do it. He is FAST! Also, I think he has decided to forego my commitment to run a 5K if I will run the Super Spartan race on July 9th. :)
If you get a chance, congratulate Fonz (he used to sporadically blog a bit ... maybe he will start blogging again now).

Not sure of my official time -- it never did show up on the computer.
Good character building stuff!!!! I think that is the best way to describe this race for me. Didn't do nearly as well as I thought I would have, but a great reality check! :) I have a list of what possibly went wrong, but they are just excuses. :) :) :)
I ran the race almost exactly as I planned through mile 20. Ran the tangents, felt strong. :) In fact, I distinctly remember virtually patting myself on the back at mile 20 telling myself how incredibly awesome I was and that I had 3:27 in the bag and just might hit 3:25!!! OH HOW PRIDE PRECEDES THE FALL!!! Seriously within a couple of minutes of congratulating myself on my incredible fitness everything fell apart. I suddenly felt weak and exhausted. I decided to slow down a bit to re-energize but no matter what I did the feeling got worse and worse. At mile 23 I gave myself a good pep talk and was determined to reverse this trend. I knew if I could just gut it out for a few more miles that I could still hit 3:27. I gave it everything I had and ran that mile exactly at planned pace. After that the wheels completely came off. I lost a minute on mile 24, another on mile 25, another on mile 26 and then another with the course being long. I WAS SO MAD AND FRUSTRATED. I pointlessly tried to surge (my mind would attack but my body would not respond) as I watched 3 women pass me in the last mile. Very discouraging. Solid effort, just fell short.

Feeling extremely cool to know so many elite runners and wishing them luck at the start! (I was worried about how Fritz would do after I saw the crazy huge deck burns on his leg ... but now I think he should pull a stunt like that before every race!!! WOW!!!!)

This week has been crazy and this race was not on my priority list until Friday. Sadly, I forgot a bunch of my stuff at home including my sunglasses and visor. Not surprising seeing that I took an ambien at 11:00 last night and was still pretty drugged up when I got up at 2:30 this morning. Matt and JohnnyV were hoping that I was drugged up enough that I wouldn't remember them calling me Big-Headed Princess. But I remember and they are in so much trouble!!! ;)
Same gig, different name: Ahead of schedule through mile 22ish and then crashed and burned! :) So, my new reason to why I keep falling a few minutes short of my goal is simple: I think I can run faster than I actually can!! Good to know!!! :) :) :) Very cool to have a running partner the whole way! JohnnyV and I ran the first 20 together and then Fonz came to pace me the last 6.2. LOVED having them to run with. I was a pretty pathetic runner towards the end and appreciated Fonz's help. It was also nice to have Rhett at the finish line to keep me steady. I felt pretty icky. Thanks Rhett!!
Still not quite sure what type of running goals I should have while in school. It has been more intense than I thought. BUT I LOVE IT!!!
(My watch was totally messed up. Shows a 5:23 for my 15th mile and that I ran 26.56 miles -- which by the way totally stinks when you are thinking you are going to quit at 26.2.)
BEST PART: Ry and the kids surprised me and came!!!! :) :) :) I was so happy to see them!!!! Watched my SSF run in and then headed home.

Beautiful morning turned scary.
My girls and I decided to run a 5K this morning (a bribe of slurpees helped in the decision making process). It started out absolutely wonderfully. We were running about a 10:40ish pace, laughing, giggling, running through sprinklers when possible, etc. Anyway ... Livvy kept wanting to run faster. I would hold her back and tell her to just stay with the group until we got close to home, and so she did. As soon as we turned into our neighborhood she looked at me with eager eyes and said, "Okay Mom ... I am going to run fast now!" I smiled and told her to have fun. As soon as Sophia saw what Livvy was doing she decided to join in. About one minute later I hear Sophia screaming, "Something is wrong with Liv." I was only a few yards behind them and so was there within seconds. Livvy was trying to breath but all you could hear was this low gurgly wheeze. I asked her to talk to me, but she could not respond. I picked her up and ran home with her (luckily we were very close). Rylee had run ahead to grab my inhaler. Livvy could not inhale the medicine so I puffed in about 5 pumps. In less than a minute she started breathing more normally, but was acting lethargic and not herself. I called my asthma doc and took her in. After three hours of various testing all asthma and allergy tests came back negative. I have no idea what happened. We are to see her regular doc next week and get a CBC done. She is acting completely like herself now. She says that she felt great the whole run and was having fun until her sudden incident. It was a horrible experience.
Could it just be a virus?

They were not doing anything strenuous. This is crazy: Friday we had the episode with Livvy (see post) and today this with Payton. It must be some kind of virus, don't you think? Payton does not want to come home and says he feels fine. Ry is on his way there to pick him up anyway. This is just nuts. |

Ran to the gym, did a speedwork of 8 800s with 400 m jog between each, then a set of circuits with Fonz, then ran home. Dead tired! :)

14.8, AP 8:12 with JohnnyV (and some with John D) on the JRP. Progressive run. We never felt awesome, but still managed to pull off a decent pace and hit it hard at the end. Very happy about that. Ran into my SSF, Kathie, Kim, Kelly, and Jon a couple of times. How I wish that I didn't have to be home by 7:00 a.m. so that I could have chatted with them more than a few seconds. Dang I miss those girls. Someone needs to put together another Monday or Friday lunch. :) :) :)

This race was crazy tough and crazy awesome!!!
Not even sure where to begin.
Roughly 1200 participants divided into several different heats. Fonz and I had made a deal, I would run the Spartan if he would run SGM and I had to sign up in the competitive heat. I have be so nervous and sick about running it, but am beyond ecstatic that I did.
The terrain consisted of wicked elevation gains and losses above Soldier Hollow and 18 military obstacles. The obstacles were insane, including climbing up ropes, wading through mud pits that were higher than my navel, climbing over walls, dragging cinder blocks, jumping through fire, target shooting, throwing javelins, a rubick's cube, monkey bars, slick rocks, crawling under barbwire in the mud for roughly 200 yards with some military man yelling at you, balance beams, lifting up tires, and even running through a pit of gladiators (who knocked me over and threw me like a barbie doll) at the end!!!! CRAZY CRAZY CRAZY stuff. I have a few injuries (but nothing that won't heal and nothing that should keep me from running: shoulder and stinking thumb) and I look pretty dang beat up (bruises and cuts all over) but the trophy I got was totally worth it!!! Seriously, best trophy EVER EVER EVER!!!! And an experience that I will NEVER forget! :)
Miraculously, I was second overall female (first place was 10 minutes ahead of me, 3rd place was 5 seconds behind) and Fonz was the third overall man. The mens competition was definitely greater than the womens. According to Hobie Call (The Spartan King, I believe he has won 10 straight Spartan races) this was the toughest course in the series. He usually runs them just under an hour and this one took him 1:09. My goal was to double Hobie's time and try to beat it. I was thrilled with the result!! Not only did I get the coolest and heaviest trophy EVER but I also got a $150.00 pair of Skull Candy Rocnation Aviators (sadly my ipod is too old to use them ... I might have to remedy that) and qualification and entry to the 48 hour Death Race in North Carolina (which I will definitely NOT be doing).
BEST PART: Ry decided to run this last minute!!!!! He is the man!!!! He did AWESOME!!!! :) :) :) Seriously, I am the luckiest woman alive! (He said it was a good thing he didn't know what he was in for.) It was a GREAT day!!!
Oh yeah, so this was super cool and kept my fire burning throughout: about the last half of the race I was jockeying for 2nd, 3rd and 4th places. It was the coolest feeling when I would be in 2nd or 3rd place because when I would complete an obstacle you would hear one of the military people get on their walkie talkies and say, "2nd (or 3rd) woman just finished obstacle number blah blah blah." DANG THAT WAS AWESOME!!! Of course, I wasn't sure if it was exactly accurate because this was time chipped and I started towards the front. I definitely pushed myself to new limits in this race. I feel Spartan tough!!!! :) :) :)

Saturday's race really took a toll on my body. The 18 miler this morning was much tougher than I had anticipated. Other than the two miles I ran with Matt it seemed to drag on forever. Hot ... boring ... lonely ... tired ... blah blah blah. But if there is any chance of me running the D-News full I needed to get in some type of long run. What to do?

Tried to run but stopped within a couple of minutes due to lower left leg pain. I am 95% sure that it is medial tibial stress syndrome. In otherwords, shinsplints. I seem to do so much better when I run more miles but slower miles. Trying to compensate for the lack of time I have had available to run I have increased the intensity. Looks like I have increased it too quickly. Need to re-evaluate the plan.
Unsure about D-News. I will give it a couple days and see what happens.
The good thing is that there is no time to worry and stress about it! :) :) :)

Waited until a little before 10:30 this morning so that I could run in the heat. Heat has always been my nemesis, as it was today as well. I just feel icky when it is hot. Don't we all? When I left it was 78 degrees, when I got home it was 82 degrees. I stopped in the middle of my run to lay in the intersection of 5 different sprinklers. Then again to drench my tank in a drinking fountain a few miles later. Seriously, I am such a baby.
Took ibuprofen last night to reduce some of the inflammation, I also taped up my leg. It faired fairly well during the run, which makes me happy. :)

16 with my brother, Nic, and my beautiful SIL (Nic's wife), Annie! :) :) :) I LOVED these miles. I kept thinking about how lucky I am to have such wonderful family. Each mile made me think about running with Annie during the last handful of miles of her first marathon. She is seriously AMAZING! She is going to rock SGM. I am so excited. I have never been one to wear matching clothes with anyone, but I think her and I will get some matching running duds for the race. Why does that make me feel all excited and high schoolish again??? :) :) :)

Yesterday I felt a tweak in my leg when I was playing a little frisbee trying to relax before the final. I was worried about my run today so decided to sleep in and do it on the treadmill (that way I could hop off whenever and finish my time on the elliptical).
I was pleasantly surprised. Not one peep from the sweet thing! :)
20 miles, AP 8:26. I was so happy with my leg that I didn't even mind being on the treadmill for that long. :)
It still doesn't feel as strong as it should, so I will continue to only run 3 to 4 days a week and no speedwork through August.
My two week break between semesters is finally here!!!

Gun time: 3:50:07 (don't know chip time ... probably only about 30 seconds faster).
Mixed feelings about this race. Rested my leg for 3 days straight in hopes of getting the inflammation under control well enough to pull the distance off. Didn't race full out, but didn't totally slack off either. Walked through all of the aid stations (for too long). Leg held up decently. Gave me a couple of fits but nothing too serious. Is inflamed now, but will hopefully settle down in a day or two.
Roughly 3 minutes slower than last year. Overall placing higher, but division placing lower. They gave out cool looking awards which I was disappointed not to earn. (They did not pull out the overall three from their respective divisions, had they I would have gotten 3rd and a very cool looking plaque, stink.But truly, I didn't earn it ... so all is fair and right -- just wishin'. :))
Dropped from 2nd overall placing in the Grand Slam to 3rd overall placing. Need to decide whether or not I will run TOU. Probably shouldn't, but who knows. My leg might surprise me. Oh please oh please oh please. :)
Overall I am satisfied (just a pinch of disappointment from the slower finish this year and I missed Andy pacing me the last 10K -- not that I could have run any faster today ... just missed the company). This race was an excellent indicator of my present fitness. Coming to terms with the whole balancing family, school, church, sleep, running thing. :) :) :)

| 11.25 miles, AP 8:34 Another plan that didn't pan out. Wanted to do my 20 miler today (since Saturday was going to be crazy busy). Felt it would be best to do on the TM with the current leg problems. Kept thinking the legs would warm up and begin to behave. Tried varying speeds, etc., to see if it would help. Finally shut her down at 11.25 miles. This is what I think is going on: L medial tibial stress syndrome and secondary soleus tear. Problems began in July. Continued to run while trying not to cross the red line. R anterior shin splints. No warning signs. Likely a compensation injury. Lower back/SI pain. This is definitely a result of all of the sitting during hours of classes and studying. ** Looking back at my injuries over the past few years I see a pattern: they all happen during stressful semesters that require a lot of sitting and when my back begins to hurt. Really, I am not that old!! :) |

| 180 LONG minutes on the elliptical. No pain in the legs, but back stiffness. Went for a back/leg assessment with Matt at 9:30 p.m. I owe him big time. Findings: L posterior pelvic tilt, locked L SI joint, and all the things I already assumed in my legs. Matt gapped my SI joint and did several myofascial releases throughout my body. I have come to terms that I might be merely crosstraining up until SGM. I did this for three weeks before Boston 2010 and I can do it again. Yep, my time will not be stellar, but it is what it is. :) Still trying to find that perfect balance of family, school, sleep and running. It'll come. :) :) :) | |

30 minutes elliptical 9 treadmill miles, AP 8:26 Definitely seeing improvement. Pn B LE still 3/10. Did not increase or decrease with run except when I tried to increase my speed. 8:30s seems to be most comfortable, which is far better than not running at all. As long as the pn stays at this level I think I will be able to cross the finish line at SGM. I am still worried about the distance and downhill. Will my elliptical cardio be enough to carry me through 26.2 running miles. Before Boston 2010 I did a lot of pool running, I did not do that this time. However, pn does not seem as significant as it did before Boston 2010. It'll be interesting. :) No additional pn or swelling later in the evening or following morning. Alternated ice and heat a couple of times throughout the day. Ice seems to help with the swelling, heat seems to help with the tightness and pn. Core strength training.

| Probably should not have run ... but did (and am good with the decision). :) Pain level was about what I had expected during the race (but far worse than I expected the following several days). Did better than I thought I would have the first half and worse than I thought I would have the second half. My body was just not ready for the miles. Luckily Ashton and Jake ran the final 6.2 with me or I might have walked the whole thing. :) LOVED being there though as both Annie (my SIL) and Fonz had FANTASTIC races!!! Annie PR'd by roughly 15 minutes and Fonz ran his FIRST marathon in 2:48:xx!!!!!! And get this, his longest training run was a 16 miler. DANG THAT BOY IS FAST!!!! He says he is not going to do it again ... I am going to try and convince him otherwise. :) :) :) It was fun seeing everyone! I am super ready to give my body a short break from running now. I have been feeling quite worn down these past couple of months and am looking forward to regrouping. :) |

| 4 miles So ... long story sorta short: SGM: I had a really good first half (much better than I expected) and then around the halfway mark the pain in my left leg began to intensify significantly. I had been dealing with pain there for quite some time and had just figured that the meds had worn off and that I was running harder than normally. After that, the rest of the marathon pretty much stunk! I took a week off, and then began adding short runs in. I was happy because I was running all of them without any meds and the pain seemed to be lessening. My only concern was what I thought was a ganglion cyst that I thought needed to be drained. Today I went to see the doctor to see if he could drain it. He had me run 4 miles to see if we could aggravate the cyst enough to really make it stand out so that when he poked it he could be spot on. I ran, the cyst acted up, but as the doctor was palpating the area he pushed on a spot on my tibia that put me through the roof! He put the needle down and said we needed to do a set of x-rays. Result: stress fracture. :( :( :( Positive side: it isn't that big and unlike many tibial stress fractures it is not horizontal, but mostly vertical (which is good since fractures that stay out in the cortex area and don't penetrate the core of the bone heal much quicker). It looks almost like when you shred a small portion of the outside of a twig a bit. Know what I mean? Sigh. It is already in the healing process and if I am a good girl it should hypothetically heal somewhere between 2-4 weeks from now. Anyway, enough said. Peace! :) |

upright bike: 30k/18.6 miles - 1:00:38 (random/3) elliptical: 7.4k/4.65 miles - 37:57 (random/1) swim: 1125 m/.7 m - 24:30 (I realize those are some pretty weird distances ... but they were intentional: 3/4th the distance of an olympic tri - substituting the running miles for elliptical miles.) ** The great thing about being injured is having time to do all the other sports that I love, esp. swimming. I love how it shocks my body a bit and I feel more in shape overall. Don't get me wrong, I love and miss running ... but I love this as well. If I weren't so afraid of being hit by a car and being permanently injured I think I would love to get into triathlons. BUT ... after volunteering at a clinic that specializes in spinal injuries I don't seem to be able to get past that fear. :(

One of
my best birthdays EVER EVER EVER!!!!!
For starters, woke up early
next to my incredible hubby. Then Fonz and Ashton took me out for a nice
birthday breakfast at Eggs in the City before my classes. School was great and
included Rice Crispy treats and a very nice Physical Therapy approved massage.
When I arrived back home it was present time. As usual, Ry spoiled me rotten!!!
After presents the inaugural Birthday Olympic Tri began. Upon meeting at my
house Annie presented me with the best trophy ever, yes, even before the race
began (let it be known that the trophy was not so much a result of Annie truly believing that I am "pretty much the coolest person ever" but is the aftermath of my incessant texts to her telling her that I am pretty much the coolest person ever -- hee hee -- I love having an SIL who puts up with me and who I LOVE to be with)!!!! I was simply loving life!!! Seriously, I am so stinkin' spoiled!!!!
The participants were as
follows: me, Rylee (my daughter), Smooth, Annie and Fonz (who actually
surprised us at the gym -- so cool). I had more fun than I could have
imagined!! We made a few modifications, such as swimming last (for those of us
swimming) and substituting the swim portion with either the elliptical or
basketball (for those of us not swimming). This was my first attempt at an
Olympic Tri (although at a gym it is certainly easier than a real tri) and I
learned a lot!!!
1st: They are INCREDIBLY fun
when you are surrounded with people you love!!! I have the best friends in the
world. I am POSITIVE about this!!!
2nd: Starting out full speed
ahead is probably not the smartest way to go but sure makes things interesting.
3rd: Smooth is so much fun on
the bike!! She keeps you laughing the whole time!!!! :)
4th: When Rylee is in a zone
she doesn't want to talk to anyone!!!! It's all business, baby!!!
5th: You should never forget to
bring your swimming cap and goggles when you have 1500 meters to swim (I can't
believe I did this: Ry was a good sport and brought them over to me WAY fast --
only lost a few minutes on this minor technicality.) :) :) :)
6th: There is a reason that
most tris have you start with the swim. (After my first 700 meters my ipod
broke. I stopped to see if I could make it turn on. When I couldn't Fonz gave
me his swimming music device. I then started to swim again and my calves
literally seized up like they had never done before. Had I been in open water I
have no idea what I would have done. Annie tried to rub them out ... they were
going crazy. Luckily after just a couple of minutes everything was under
control again. I have NO idea why they cramped up. It was bizarre.)
7th: Annie is a
kick trash swimmer!!! DANG that girl is good!!!
8th: I can't beat Fonz at
anything ... even when he has a sports hernia and has to basically doggy paddle
as to not irritate it too much!!
9th: I SO SO SO want to do this
for real. I need to buy a bike asap and get over my fear of getting hit by a
car. :)
And 10th: Next year I need to
convince Ry into joining us. Seriously, SO MUCH FUN!!!!
** After the tri we all went to
my house where Ry had set up some good eats (which included the most delish
cake ever compliments of Annie's baking prowess)!!! :) We chatted and enjoyed
each others' company until midnight thirtyish. I was sad to see my birthday
pass as it was one of the best ever!!! Come to find out -- if you keep reminding people that you are "pretty much the coolest person ever" (a couple dozen texts telling them such should do the trick) then they will give you a trophy proving you were right all along!!!!! :) :) :) Rylee * Fonz * Me * Annie * Smooth ***************************************************************** Just some numbers so that I can keep track: TT (including transitions, waiting for swimcap/goggles, and time spent cramping) 2:53:00 Bike (40K/24.8 miles) 1:11:53 (way too fast ... but I had the bike set for an easy program) Run (10K/6.2 miles) 53:06 (leg did fine) Swim (1500 m) roughly 41 minutes (hopefully without the mishaps in the future I will be able to take a good 5-8 minutes off of this ... but who knows) :)

Pretty disappointed today. Focal tenderness on tibia again. Blah. I figured that since there was no pain/tenderness yesterday that I was in the clear. Should have run a shorter distance. The pace felt easy and the leg felt great, but I think I just got too greedy. I had initially told myself that I would not run more than four or five miles. I should have stuck with the plan instead of thinking all was fine. Need to be more cautious. Also need to eat better and get more sleep. :) ***************************************** Is anyone involved with or know of a race that would like a booth set up with six Physical Therapy Doctorate students from the University of Utah equipped with information (both verbal and written) regarding the most common running related injuries? (This is part of a service learning project for a class. We would like the race to be either in the Spring or Summer of 2012.)

Turkey Tri (Olympic distance) with Annie! :) :) :) (Seriously ... I have the best SIL in the whole entire world!!!!!) Bike: 40K/24.8 miles, 1:16:45 (random/2, didn't push nearly as hard as I did on my birthday in hopes that I wouldn't cramp when we got in the water) Run: 10K/6.2 miles, 51:03 Swim: 1.5K/.94 miles, 33:xx My transitions were slow giving me a TT: 2:55:xx, roughly 2 minutes slower than on my birthday. BUT ... no cramping in the pool, the run and swim were faster, and I felt AWESOME afterwards. Leg still is not 100% and it gets achy. I wish the healing were faster, but at least it is healing. I will stick with the low mileage for now. :) Annie and Teena - after our Turkey Tri ... still smiling but WAY hungry!! :)

I feel as if I did really well on my first three finals but am worried that I really messed up on this last one. Yikes! Overall, I have learned more in these past 4 months than any other 4 months in my life (including the first four months of PT school). I feel pretty confident that if I were a PT right now that there would be above a 50% chance that I could correctly diagnose a patient's impairment. But ... I am pretty certain that patients expect more than a 50% chance. :) :) :) Also, chances are I would NOT be able to effectively treat the impairment. DANG ... guess I better stay in school for another 2.33 years. I am certain that the additional $46K I will pay over these next 28 months will guarantee that I graduate a genius!!!! :) :) :) |

9 miles -- all very nice and slow except for the 6 800s I threw in the middle. A 400 m SLOW jog (11 minute pace) in between each 800. Paces for the 800s: 3:30, 3:30, 3:25, 3:25, 3:20, 3:20. Core/lumbar stabilization exercises. I am pleased with how well my leg is doing. There has not been any pain and/or discomfort while running, walking, hopping, etc. for a couple of weeks now. Still is tender when I press and prod right on the exact tiny spot where the SF was though. I need to stop doing that. But I get so stinkin' curious!!!! ;) Haven't found my mountain bike yet, and still can't believe how expensive some of them are. I keep waiting for a killer deal to present itself, but I am thinking I may just have to bite the bullet and settle for a fair deal and customer service with a smile! :)

| 13 miles, AP 8:22 Did the first three miles really slowly because they were playing the original Rocky in the cinema room and I wanted to watch one of my favorite film make out scenes ... so I just puttered along at a slow pace so that I could concentrate on the making out'ness!!! ;) Then I went into the main gym and begin to increase the speed each mile. That wasn't nearly as fun ... but the cinema room was blasted hot today. Dang! Was going to swim but was just too tired. |

Not really sure how I should translate mountain biking miles into cross training miles. I'll need to figure out a better way of doing this because I definitely have to work harder than I do on the upright bikes at the gym or on a road bike. Anyway ... Roughly 10 MTB miles on my new bike -- which I love! This was my first time riding in clips ... wow!! I took three spills but only one of them drew blood. :) The spills were as follows: once trying to jump a log and twice during a super steep but short ascent (when I failed to down shift enough). With my feet clipped in I would be sliding back before I could get them loose ... then WHAM ... on the ground! (Ry was a saint not to laugh ... seeing I have been talking trash.) I kept giving it a go until I figured out what in the world I was doing. I have *a lot* of work ahead of me before the XTERRA. But other than the bitter cold ... IT WAS AWESOME!!!!! :) :) :)

| Christmas Tri with Annie and Rylee!!!!! :) :) :) Annie and I did the Olympic distance, Rylee did her own version of a sprint. :) :) :) We did everything in the correct order today, but used the spin bikes instead of the uprights. Since the spin bikes don't keep track of mileage we decided to go for time 1:15:00. The problem with this is that I am certain that I did not push as hard as I would have if I were going for mileage. Oh well ... still SUPER fun!!! 1.5K swim: 34:xx Spin bike: 1:15:xx 10K run: 48:32 My transitions were slow ... but I was having a ton of fun!!!! :) :) :) Thank you again Annie and Rylee!!!!! :) :) :) Hope everyone had a WONDERFUL Christmas!!!! :) :) :) |

| 1 warm up mile and then 9 with AP 8:06. Felt like garbage this morning. Trying to figure out why. Here are the possible reasons: 1. I am getting sick (I have a headache and felt "cloudy" and a bit nauseated throughout the run -- kinda stupid that I not only kept going but that I tried to push myself.). 2. I have been eating EXTREMELY POORLY since finals. I keep telling myself that I am on break and that I will get back to my good eating habits on January 1st. I have decided that I cannot wait ... getting back to healthy foods today. 3. The mountain biking is taking more of a toll on me than I expected. My legs have felt heavy and tired. 4. The Christmas tri took more out of me than I thought and I am still recovering. :) Really hoping it is #4!!!! :) Hope everyone is having a wonderful week! :) |

15 miles, AP 8:16 *Did my long run today because I am mtb'ing with Ry tomorrow and doing a New Year's Eve tri with Annie on Saturday. :) *Ry and I are leaving for Red Rock on Monday ... so looking forward to a lot of trail runs, mountain biking and golfing! Can hardly wait!!! :) :) :)

75 minutes mtb'ing with Ry. :) SO SO SO much fun!!! I think the mountain bike purchase was one of the best purchases Ry and I have ever made. I LOVE mountain biking!!! Remarkably, I did not fall one single time!!! I got my flu shot today, but I am fairly certain that I was injected with a magical "anti-falling mad mountain biking skillz" elixir instead (and for a mere 20 bucks)!! Ry had two wipe-outs! He should have been injected! (Of course he takes far more risks than I do so would have needed a much higher potency, probably 40 bucks worth.) Sure enough we hit the spots where I usually fall 5 or 6 times today. No problems! I am pretty sure that I have moved up one notch on the awesomeness meter!!! ;) .71 miles running on my TM (making it possible for me to hit exactly 1800 running miles for the year after the 10K I will run as part of tomorrow's tri). :)
