Utah Valley Marathon 2013: PR 3:16:20, 1st division.

Running With the Bulls 5k 2011: 20:02, 1st place

Race For The Cure 10k, San Antonio 2013: 42:47, 2nd overall

Run a sub 3:20 @ Air Force Marathon 2015.

Sub 20 min 5k

Run a 3(ish) hour marathon before I am 40.

7 miles at an amazing 8 mm.  Nice flat run around the 'hood.  Canal trail and around the neighborhood.

Evening yoga.

My left hamstring has this cramp that will not go away!!  Foot pain is pretty bad too.  I thought taking a week off would heal everything up, but I am in worse shape!

Just remember, it takes 26 days to recover from the marathon, right? I am sorry you are in pain, but give it time and it will all be better!!! So hard when you are going through it, it seems like the end of the world. I know.

It does seem forever. I need to remember to take the time and let my body heal. I think it's hard for us masochistics.

I agree, you would think we would get it, but we are all die hards and want the body to work NOW. We have zero patience.

There are many causes for muscle cramps: dehydration, electrolytes imbalance, muscle fatigue, inconsistency in stretching. When charlie horse strikes, the immediate thing to do is gently stretch out the muscle that's constricting involuntarily. You may have to manually stretch/flex it or have someone do it while you try to relax and breath thru it. The spasms can be very painful. Once the cramping subsides, massaging the muscles in long strokes will make it feel better. The muscle will be tender to touch for a while. You may also find "knots" in the muscle fibers. A PT will know how to work these knots out. I'd use ice/heat alternating treatment to increase circulation to the area. Keep hydrating well. Make sure that your urine is a light yellow...too light means you may be hyponatremic (low salt), too dark means you are dehydrated. I have been told that supplements such as calcium/magnesium/zinc might be helpful. I am taking that once a day along with my multi-vitamins.

Please rest that hamstring. No need to jump right back to training.

Thank you very much Smooth. I knew that you would be the person to talk to because you have more unwanted experience in this field. I will try to stretch the leg out but it hurts so dang bad! There are tears that come to my eyes when I stretch, and that is very uncommon for me. I have been icing, but now I will put some heat on it too. I am happy that I am not racing this week, or anytime soon.
