I came to this race ultimately wanting a 1:30,  I would be pleased if I got a 1:35.  I was pleased, but not impressed with myself with my performance today.  When I ran across the finish, the clock read 1:33:40, so I am a little confused with the system.  I don't know if they went off of gun time or what?  20 seconds is a big deal to me, and take away about 5 seconds for waiting to cross the start line.

I wasn't planning to race TOU half until Thursday evening, so I haven't been mentally preparing to race this week.  I have had a challenging week... new job, waking up at 5 to run everyday, feeling pretty ill mid-week.  The list goes on and on with excuses, but excuses are meant to be left at the door on race day.

Drove up to Logan and stayed with friend Sarah that is a runner herself.  Slept on a cumfy couch with a loud fan blowing all night.  I am planning to stay at the same place for the marathon, so I wanted to get used to it a little.

Woke up at 5, got to the race at 5:35 and registered.

Start line 1.5 mile warm up.  It was fun to see some of the elite runners warming up.

The race...  I went out WAY too fast!!!  When I was running by Allie (from the blog), I knew I needed to slow it down.  I was anxious, I wanted to test the waters and feel the flow of the course.

Splits:  6:20,6:52, 6:50, 6:27, 6:40, 6:37, 6:37, 7:09, 7:13, 7:52, 7:40, 8:31? (eek!), 7:19. AP:somewhere around 7:10 mm, I forgot.  The goal was a 7:00 mm.

I really struggled at the end.  ANYONE that has advice for this marathon course, please give it!  I ran the TOU marathon last year and I completely ran out of gas by the end due to the turns and uphill miles at the end.  I want to PR so dang bad it hurts!  I also want to pull between a 3:20-3:25!  Is this possible? My goal pace is a 7:40.

NICE time, Bec! That new pic is AWESOME! Where was that taken? Between a rock and a hard place? :)

Can't wait to read about your race in detail.

Bec - great race! it was fun to see you yesterday. you were running very strong and looking relaxed and comfortable. the TOU full can be tricky after you leave the canyon. do not try to run every mile at goal pace, but rather run each mile at the same effort. some will be much faster, some will be much slower, depending on the ups, downs and turns in the given mile. overall it should even out to your 7:40 pace. so don't get discouraged if you see an 8:10, or back down if you run a 7:00...focus on what they FEEL like. the effort level should feel even throughout the race. i will PM you a chart showing the split times broken down by effort for the TOU course.

your fitness is great right now and i definitely think you are set up for a PR. BELIEVE in yourself and visualize crossing the line with your goal on the clock. sounds way cheesy, i know...but the strength of the mind can make or break a race. good luck with training. 3 weeks to go! see you then. :)

GOOD JOB Bec!!! I second allie's advise above. You have the fitness to achieve that PR goal. Use that "I want to PR so bad, it hurts" desire be the burning fire and stay focus during the last 10K. You can do it! Allie's chart will help tremendously!

Great race Bec!

Bec Allie is right! I got caught in the same idea to rip it up at the start and was completely spent by the time I hit the base of the canyon. The marathon forces those short hills on you right at 18 when most people hit the wall. I'm going to rethink my stategy for the marathon.

From Andy on Sun, Aug 30, 2009 at 14:01:12 from 198.60.114.178

Just listen to Allie. Your time for this race indicates that 3:20 is well within reach.

From Kelli on Sun, Aug 30, 2009 at 14:51:45 from 71.219.64.200

I have no advice, but the pros will give it. the winding in the neighborhoods and little hills on this course get me very time. I do think you did great. If you look at all of the other reports and runners splits, everyone struggles with the same miles, so it is normal.

You will kick butt in the marathon for sure, you are in great shape and very ready.

And i loved the running dress, very cute. And looking good while running is very important!

From RAD on Sun, Aug 30, 2009 at 16:03:22 from 76.27.12.70

Nice race Bec! Take the advice of those that have run the course before and you'll hit that PR with no problems!

From Bec on Sun, Aug 30, 2009 at 16:54:07 from 67.177.35.60

Allie,

Thank you so much for the advice! Last year I made the mistake of trying to run every mile at goal pace. I was going to ask you about running this course, so thank you for the input. I like the idea of running with how I FEEL, I will use that as my strategy. The marathon is a complete mind battle for me. I don't think it's cheesy to visualize the clock at the end, I need to be doing that at every race.

Walter,

I have to admit that I was pushing way too much at the beginning of the race. If I had backed it off I think I would have ended with about the same time. This course is a tricker!

Smooth,

The 10k is where it is at in a marathon. Mile 18-24 can be the most grueling physical and mental miles of the marathon. I have to remember to stay STRONG during the last 10k, especially on the TOU course.

Kelli,

I love your advice. "Look good while you run." If all else fails in a marathon at least you'll look cute in your pictures, right? I love the new dress, every female should run in one! So cumfy and cool. I recommend the dress to any lady!

RAD,

It was good to see you yesterday. I hope that you are planning a PR on this course too.

Wow Bec you're a great runner! Nice race and time. The marathon will be a breeze! :) well as breezey as marathons can be! good luck.
