No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

On Burt's (AKA Buster Bluth) advice, I tried sticking a nail in my other foot today just to see what would happen. It was a little harder to keep my splits consistent, but on average I was much faster. Thanks Burt!

Extreme Chafage part two! It was raining pretty hard again this morning, just like last Friday, but I really wanted to get out for a couple hours. I took off on my regular route and ran into Preston about 2 miles in. We ran together for about 3 miles before he headed back home. Then I ran Farwest hill twice and did two loops around Oakbrook. I had originally planned on 20, but the rain and chafing pretty much took the fun out of it and I finished early. I'm not sure why I feel so speedy this week. I have picked up 10 to 15 seconds per mile at the same level of effort I usually run.
Cut my run short today. I found a bench outside and just sat there for a while all sweaty and cold praying for my son. Teenage years are hard enough without all the extra mental baggage his bio parents gave him. It's been a tough week.

I decided to try running with my grandson in the jogger today. It was a lot harder than I expected! After the first five miles up Farwest and back to the park I was glad to stop at the "play" and watch Jamie run around for a while while I caught my breath. After about 15 minutes there he thought he saw Mr. Preston run by and convinced me to chase after him. He got away from us when he turned into the trails so we continued back to Oakbrook and did the loop. I had high hopes of doing the loop twice for a total of at least 15 miles today, but I just didn't have it in me.
Farwest hill x2. I saw that white rabbit again today on my first trip up the hill. I also saw an old, old, old asian woman skipping down the hill like a little girl. It was quite surreal.
No sleep, no breakfast, lots of monster hills, and I left the house completely discouraged. It's a miracle I made it as far as I did. I got to the top of 6th avenue hill and walked two miles to my friend's house in the north end. I never even got close to Point Defiance park which would have been the best part of the run. Maybe next time.

Pretty easy to meter the pace this morning. I felt good at the end so I pushed it as fast as I could without changing my breathing pattern(2 steps in, 3 steps out.) for the last 1/3 of a mile.
Army Strong 5k (2.84 Miles) 00:17:36, Place overall: 14, Place in age division: 2
Total Distance
2.84

Same short course as last year's Army Strong Veteran's 5k. Last year I had 2.86 on the garmin, this year it was still short at 2.84. They did mention something about the short distance after the race this time. The announcer said they will probably rename the event though rather than changing the course to make it longer. It seems weird to me that they would do chip timing and not make sure the course was actually 5k. What's that they say about the "Army way"? :) It was still a fun race and it was FREE so what's not to like about that? :)
Technically, this is another PR for me too. I took 58 seconds off last year's time on this same course! My next race is 4 on the 4th in Steilacoom. It will be my first 4 miler so the pressure is off for a PR at that one :)
