Today was our first cross country meet of the season and I ran varsity. I went up to the race determined not to be last and not to get nervous. So when I get there I put my shoes on and go over to Bills car and he gives me my varsity shorts that I have been waiting for, for like a year now. So I go and change into those and go on a one mile shake out run with Sarah. We go up the course a half mile then stop and cheer for the JV boys as they pass by. We go back down to the start of the race and put our racing shoes on, get water, take a potty break, and go cheer again as the JV girls pass. By this time it was only 9 in the morning so I had another hour to till I raced. Kevin, Scott and I go on a mile warm up and meet the rest of the Varsity Boys at the starting line. We do like 4 strides then line up. The gun goes off and no longer than 50 meters into the race Dylan falls hard and brings like three kids down with him but they don't restart the race because the officials didn't see it. I see if he is OK and we continue racing, at this time we have a horrible position. Dylan and I sprint a bit to catch up to the group again and we did. When I get to about the half mile up the canyon I start gagging like I am going to puke so I slowed down the pace a tiny bit and waited for it to go away, when it did I sped up the pace again. When we got to the mile mark or the turn around to the trail thingy my watch said 7:28 and that is 2 minutes faster than last year and the entire first like mile and a quarter is all uphill because the course goes first mile or so is uphill then last 2 is downhill. So when I get to the downhill I was still like second to last place and I wanted to be way farther up than that so I really try to pick up the pace. The boys in front of me were like 100 or 150 meters ahead of my so the odds were against me if I was going to catch up to them. So I picked up the pace and did catch one of them eventually but he stayed right behind me until the flat part where he could pass me which he did. Then some other kid I caught up to and did catch up to him. The kid who I passed but then repassed me I caught back up to in the last 5 meters of the race. As soon as I passed the finish line I felt like I was going to puke so I made it to the stream and I bent over gagging all over the place and coughing like no other but I didn't puke! Yay... I think what happened is I am not used to running in the heat so when I did it absolutely killed me because Varsity was running in the brutal heat with about half of it not shaded. When I felt better I cheered on the girls Varsity and ran a mile cooldown. Then went to peer court and straight to bed!!! Here is my Garmin Connect:
