It was weird this morning.  The official temperature at the airport was 19 degrees, but my back yard thermometer said 42, so I wasn't sure how to dress.  Luckily I dressed for about 25 which turned out to be good.  It was really windy when I started and I ran the entire length of Fairway to get some nice rolling hills.  I caught up to Bob as I ran up Satterfield Hill after I had run a bit over 3 miles.  We ran together the rest of the time and even ran the trails above the neighborhood.  As we were coming down the dirt road that comes down to Chubbuck Road, we found the COLD air.  It dropped probably 20 degrees in the span of a quarter of a mile.  It definitely felt around 20 degrees.  With the wind it was even colder.  I ran 6.78 easy, hilly miles.

It was 25 degrees this morning, but the very high humidity and wind made it feel colder, especially going in to the wind.  I ran around the fairgrounds before doing the entire length of Fairway for the nice, rolling hills.  Then I ran up Satterfield hill before hitting the trails up above that.  Total 9.03 miles.

It was 13 degrees and calm this morning.  My daughter left her phone at our house last night after the Super Bowl and she needed it this morning so I ran it over to my mother-in-laws house because she will be watching Paige today.  That way Jenny could pick up her phone when she drops off the baby.

I ran the 2.5 miles to her house on E. Alameda, then ran up Monte Vista, down Booth, up Satterfield, then on my trail before looping home.  It added 1 mile and an extra hill climb, which was good after all the junk I ate last night during the game.  Total 8.11 miles.

It was 28 degrees with areas of freezing fog when I left this morning.  There were a couple of slick areas but it wasn't too bad.  I ran the fairgrounds loop and then did all of Fairway to get the rolling hill work.  I headed up Pocatello Creek Rd. and then up Satterfield.  When I was about halfway up the hill I ran in to Lowell and Suzette running down the hill.  I had already put 5.5 miles behind me and was planning around 10.  I asked them how far they were going and they said down to the hospital.  I agreed to run to the top of Monte Vista with them and then I would turn around and finish home.

When we were running on Monte Vista I thought "what the heck" and decided to just go where they went.  We headed to the hospital and then climbed Buckskin hill and ran down the back side to Parks Rd and then down Pocatello Creek.  They dropped off at Perkins to have breakfast and I ran the rest of the way home.  I ended up with 15.21 miles with some really good hill work.  I was a bit dehydrated when I got home but all-in-all a good Saturday run.

8.530.008.53

It was 60 degrees, calm, and absolutely gorgeous in Scottsdale this morning.  It gets light early here because they are in Pacific time so at 6:00am it was light and wonderful.

I ran 8.53 miles and thought about lots of things as I ran.  I haven't run at this low of an elevation in several years and I haven't run this FLAT of a run in a long time.  Luckily the air was dry so I didn't sweat too much while I ran as the moving air cooled me.  But...I was buckets when I stopped.

The biggest thing I noticed was the social (or lack therof) aspect of my run.  When I was about a mile in I thought about how different it would be to marathon train in a heavily populated area.  A 20 mile run would take more careful planning and I was glad that I do not have that challenge.  The thing I noticed, however, was the differnce in large city runners.  When I run, I wave, say Hi, or at the very least make cordial eye-contact with other runners and walkers.  Whenever I would do that today I was met with indifference, looking-away, and at some points....fear.  When I would come up behind another runner they would look at me like I was a stalker ready to attack.  I know that this is an inherent reaction because of increased crime rates in bigger cities.  I feel bad for them as I think they are missing what I feel is one of the biggest benefits of running......social interaction with other like-minded individuals.  On Monday, back at home, I came up behind 4 female runners and said "Stalker Alert" before I caught them.  The response was a laugh from all of them and we ran together, chatting for several blocks before I took off on my own path.  There was NO WAY that would or even could happen this morning.....more is the pity!

Suffice it to say, I appreciate running where I do even if it means bad weather months and different challenges.

I guess I ran with my eyes wide-open today and didn't really enjoy what I saw...

It was 45 degrees and humid this morning from all the rain last night.  I ran 4 miles before meeting up with our running group at the track.  We did a "hopscotch" workout.  We divided in to groups of equal ability and each group ran in a single file line around the track.  The runner in back had to run faster around the group to take the lead and then it was the next persons turn.  We did this for 2 sets of 10 minutes.  Our group averaged around a 6:45 pace depending on who was leading.  It was actually a lot of fun.  Then I ran a bit with Barry before running home.  Total 10.34 miles.

It was 45 degrees this morning with almost no wind at all.  I ran 1/2 mile to Barry's house to pick him up for our long run.  He said he wanted to go 15-18, but I had other ideas.  I convinced him to run the greenbelt in old town and by the time we got there I said " I'm running down to Indian Hills before I turn around".  He reluctantly went with me.  By the time we made a rest stop at the student union he said "Hey, I am going to get like 19 miles today".  I asked him if he was OK to do that and he said yes.  We ran back to his house and he had just over 19.  I ran home to get my 20.  I ran 20.11 miles on an absolutely perfect morning for a run.

When the race started, I tried to set a good pace for myself, but I just was not feeling fast today.  I stayed in contact with Barry and Eric but could not overtake them.  Kory did his typical slower start and passed me around the first mile mark and kept accelerating to beat me by 6 minutes.  The wind turned out to be the worst on the last mile in where it is normally a tail wind.  I finished in 44:00 just behind Barry and Eric.

It was 32 degrees at the top of Buckskin this morning.  I picked up Kory at Century High school where he dropped his car.  We then picked up Lowell and Terry in Inkom where they dropped their car.  They wanted a 13 mile run....I wanted more.  Even though I am running Ogden next week it is not a goal race for me so a long run today fits nicely in my plans.

Lowell and Terry started ahead of us.  We caught them after the first mile.  Lowell joked that they took a walk break to let us catch up.  Kory and I ran steady 7:10-7:20's for most of the miles in to Inkom.   After mile 15 I started to slow and let Kory just pull away from me.  He was in a good groove and just kept increasing the gap on me.  Around the 18 mile mark Lowell and Terry drove by in their car and Lowell said he was going to put it in his blog that he re-passed me after 18 miles.  I am sure he will fail to mention that he did it in his car!!!  By this time Kory was a good 2 minutes ahead of me and still pulling away. He is already looking like he is in sub-3 shape.

As I approached Century, Kory was running towards me to get some extra mileage in.  He kept running around the parking lot after I finished to make it an even 22 miles for him.  I finished with 21.14 miles and feel REALLY GOOD...not beat up at all.

No run this morning.  I drove to Ogden for the marathon tomorrow.  I purchased a pair of compression socks.  With the Achilles issue on Tuesday I thought that this would be a good time to try them for the first time.  I met up with Lowell, Bret, Holly, and Suzette at the expo.  We listened to a talk by Adam Goucher about "The line between Tough and Stupid".  It was good.  I have to admit that I have been on the wrong side of that line more than once.

As we went through the expo, Bret was looking for a 3:30 pace group for her for the race.  They had a 3:35 and a 3:25 but no 3:30.  She was disappointed.

I got up at 3:00am because I had some work to do before I went to catch the bus.  I had a bowl of oatmeal as I worked on my computer.  I was not nervous at all because I had planned on this being a training run as I ran 21 last Saturday and plan on doing that again next week as I prepare for and ultra in June.

I drove to the bus loading area and found a sweet parking spot less than a block from the finish line.  As I was waiting in line for a bus, Lowell, Bret, Holly, and Suzette came by and we all rode the same bus up.  It was fairly chilly on the top and the field was wet from yesterdays rain and the morning dew.  We had small shopping bags on our shoes to keep them dry and found a spot to stretch and get ready.

As we were talking, Bret mentioned how she wished their was a 3:30 pace team because she wanted some help to try and break 3:30.  I looked at her and said "Well you have one NOW".  She was a bit stunned but I explained to her that this was just basically a fun run for me and I would be happy to try and help her.  We discussed what her strategy would be and got ready.

The race had already started when we finally made our way through the line at the bag drop truck so we spent the first 3-4 miles working our way through the large crowds.  We kept it steady until the turn at mile 8 and were right on pace.  She struggled a bit coming in to the half and she decided to make a bathroom stop at the half.  I needed to do the same so we both jumped in to the facilities at the half.

When I came out she had already taken off so I chased after her and caught her on the hill after the 14 mile mark.  After the bathroom stop I went over the 1/2 timing pad around 1:46 and change so we would need to go a bit negative on the 2nd half to get her 3:30.  She looked really good climbing the hill but hit a really bad patch from 15-17.  I told her to just hang on and we would make up the time going down the canyon.

When we crossed the dam, she picked up the pace and I figured we still had a chance.  The next 2 miles were good but I could tell she was running out of gas.  We were still passing lots of runners, but I knew that the 3:30 was getting out of reach.  I kept having to slow my pace so she could keep up.  I know what it's like to try and keep up with someone and I kept reminding myself that "she is working WAY harder than you are so do your best to help her".  I told her to pick a runner to reel in and we would chase them, then pick another.  This worked until we went through the tunnel before mile 23.

When we hit the trails I could tell she was just hanging on but stayed really tough.  When you hit the point when you know your goal is out of reach today, it gets harder.  When we went by the mile 25 aid station she just grabbed a cup and dumped it over her head and didn't take her normal walk break.  I was so impressed by her fortitude.  When we turned on Grant for the last stretch she said "we need to pick it up so I can be at 3:35:00 or better to qualify for Boston".  We picked up the pace and my Garmin even showed a 5:56 pace in the last mile but we missed it by 12 seconds.  As most of you know, she would have made it if the course wasn't long.  We both had it at 26.37.  I have always had that course come out long, stupid tangents in the canyon anyway.

While I was disappointed that I couldn't help her more, she said she would have been much slower if I wouldn't have been there.

On a side note, we passed the 3:35 pacer just after mile 15 and he had nobody running with him.  He even threw his balloons in the trash as we passed.  He probably had a 2-3 minute lead on us at the start and we beat him by a long way at the finish.

This run for me was just what I needed effort-wise and I had a great time trying to help a friend.

So I have had this persistent cough for over 2 months now.  I thought it was just a cold that wouldn't go away but now it has gotten worse.  I have breathing problems about 30 minutes after I wake up and sometimes I have to stop within a few blocks after starting a run to cough and almost throw-up, but not every day.  I finally went in to the doctor to see what was up.  I described my symptoms and as it turns out.....I have asthma.  OK....I can deal with that.  I know there are many runners on this blog who have dealt with that for a long time.

I did some research when I got home and realized I have been modifying my breathing for at least 2-3 years to accommodate my issues.  I purposely do not breathe deeply because it causes me to cough.  I also realized that I suffer from a bad, raspy cough for several days after a race.  I always thought it was just from breathing harder during the race.  The doctor wants me to take Zyrtec daily and use an Albuterol inhaler before I go for a run.  She also recommended that I keep it with me at all times.  I haven't had a full-blown asthma attack yet, so I guess I have that to look forward to.  She said that due to the mild winter we had there have been a lot more cases of asthma due to the extra "junk" in the air.

As one does, I started asking a lot of questions and found out some interesting things.  First of all, why does it bother me some days when I run and not others.  Specifically, why did I do just fine running 21 on Saturday but hacked my guts out on the start of a 10-miler last week.  I did find one answer.  As I discussed with Kory on our run Saturday, I completely cut-out drinking soft drinks 1 week ago.  As it turns out, caffeine actually helps open the airways so you breathe easier.  I was using a power-gel on Saturday that had caffeine in it so that may be why I had less troubles.  No, I am not going to go back to drinking soda again......it is just good to know.

Obviously, I am going to have to figure out what works best for me and modify my approach to running, if necessary.  It also helps to explain why I have been getting tired late in a run and lose my pace.  If you don't breathe correctly, you lose energy.

Sorry for the rambling, but I wanted to log this as I try to keep tabs on what works for me and what doesn't.

It was 47 degrees this morning.  I ran a little over a mile before I met with the group.  We were planning on doing a short trail run with them, but there was a brush fire in the area last night that pretty much toasted my favorite trail.  Sounds like it may have been started by some kids and the strong winds last night took over.  We decided to run down to the golf course instead.  We ran for 25 minutes around the course before heading back up Satterfield.  Barry and I ran another mile or so before running in to Lowell and Terry so we ran a couple more with them.  I dropped Barry at his house and ran home.  Total 7.56 miles.

On a side note, I drank some water after the inhaler this morning and felt much better.  Barry and I even did a couple block pick-up coming up to his house and my breathing felt much better and my Garmin showed a 4:35 pace for that pick-up.

Not too sure what to say about this...

I originally planned to do this as a training run again for my ultra in 2 weeks.  I didn't sleep well at all in the hotel.  I kept waking up.  I have a lot on my mind with work-related items.  I woke up to a warm (66 degrees) in Provo and thought the heat would cause me problems.  There was a big problem looming....but it wasn't the heat.

I got to the start area with about an hour to kill.  I used the time to take care of nature issues and just relaxed in a grassy area.  I decided that I wanted to try to see if a 3:25 was possible without too hard of an effort so I could get my Boston shirt like in years past.  I set a goal to have a 7:20 average by the turn at Deer Creek before the rolling hills started.  It seemed like a good idea.

At the start I felt good and we had a good tail-wind for several of the miles heading out of Wallsburg.  The wind shifted at the 5 mile mark and then shifted back behind us for a while at 6.  This was just a sign of things to come.

I had a 7:18 average at the turn which is around the 7.5 mile mark.  When I turned for the first uphill and the 30+ mph headwind slammed in to me....I hit the wall.  I couldn't seem to catch a decent breath and it felt like I was carrying someone on my back on the uphills.  When I would hit a downhill stretch it felt like I was still working too hard and my heart rate was too high.  I took a bathroom stop at the aid station at mile 9 hoping I could catch my breath and do better.  It didn't work.

I threw all goals out the window and decided it just wasn't my day and I would just take it easy and run/walk to the finish.  I ran in to Bret around 16.5 after walking a good portion of the uphill.  She was having a bad day as well so we ran most of the rest together.  I would run ahead for a mile and then walk until she caught me.  I thought I might be feeling better on mile 19 so I tried to focus and see what kind of pace I could muster.  I fought the wind and pushed that mile.  It felt like a 7:10-7:20 effort.  When the split popped up on my Garmin...it said 8:15.  Are you kidding me?  I knew I was toast.

I stopped at 20.5 to talk to Smooth who was cheering us on in her walking boot.  She said a lot of people were having bad days.  Bret and I played leapfrog the rest of the way in and she came in just behind me.  I was very glad to be finished with this long day.  Hopefully the walking will speed my recovery so I am ready for my ultra.

Marathon number 88 is in the books.  Ugly!

Sorry about the awful day... It's amazing how wind can affect a marathon race. It's impossible to do well and perform in those conditions like you want to.

Quick recovery. Plans this Saturday for the Pocatello Marathon course. Let me know.

It was 92 degrees at 6:00pm when I drove to the spot where I left my vehicle with the supplies for the much-needed water stop at the halfway point of our 5K.  From there I ran the first 1/2 backwards which included a not so nice half mile hill climb on a gravel road.  Did I mention it was 92 degrees? I needed to run the route to ensure the gate was still open at the top of the hill.  Luckily it was.  I ran to the start of our 5K to help with instructions and last minute preparations.  We run this as a prediction race so everyone can leave when they want...but....they have to try and finish as close to 7:37:30 as possible and they are not allowed to wear a watch or any other timing device.

I left right after the first slowest runners so I would be able to get to the water stop first and get it set up.  I had barely set up the table and filled a few cups when the first runners arrived.  They were very appreciative for the water.  I spent the next 20 minutes manning the station and taking pictures.  When the last (fastest) runners came through I gathered up all the supplies and picked up the trash and drove to the finish line to take more pictures.  Then we had our usual steak BBQ and had a great time.  I ran 3.16 hot miles.

Hey Bill how is everything feeling? Was surprised to see you under 2,000 miles for the year and know I haven't been following FRB as much as I used to. What's up? I've been having a great year. Have done:

5 marathons and 3 ultras this year so far, with another 2 marathons still to go before the end of the year.

I met Kory and Barry at Centennial Park and we drove up to the top of the Just Cuz course.  It was in the low 50's at the top and felt great.  I ran the first 4.5 with them and then dialed it back just a bit to get in my groove.  I ran 13.17 miles and felt really strong the last 2 miles.

This was my first run in the new shoes I bought yesterday at Teton running.  Brooks Ravenna's.  I really liked them.

I decided to just go with the flow today and take what the course and my body would give me today.  I took it easy and felt great at the half.  The tailwinds really helped on the rolling uphill section from 9-12.  It started to get hot after mile 16 but I was still on pace for my first BQ this year.

After my drink at mile 21 I got a really bad side stitch on the bottom of my right rib cage.  It made it really hard to breathe.  It got so bad that I actually stopped to walk for a minute on the turn off Diagonal St. at about 24.6 miles.  I got going again, but it was still an issue.  I calculated what I needed for my BQ (3:25) and it was going to be tight.  I had to sprint the last 1/4 mile and my Garmin said 3:25:01 when I crossed.  CRAP, did I just miss by 1 second?  Luckily my official chip time was 3:25:00 so I just made it!

I was running out of gas after the Winchester hill at 19.  I don't think I ate enough yesterday as I have been trying to lose a few pounds.  I have dropped 6 in the last 2 weeks so I am on the right track.

Pretty happy with the result today...

I tried to keep the pace nice and steady and forced myself to NOT look at my Garmin at mile splits.  I made it to the top in a good pace and then turned around and ran down.  I even caught some of the runners I saw 2 miles from the top so they had a 4 mile gap on me.

Good luck at the Just Cuz, you should have much better weather than last year!

Race: Just Cuz Marathon (26.2 Miles) 03:44:02, Place overall: 3, Place in age division: 3
Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
26.200.0026.20

It was 28 degrees when we started from the Just Cuz Half Marathon finish line at Centennial Park.  This marathon is set up like the full marathon at Timpanogos where you run up the mountain and turn around at the half start and run back.  The 2 guys that finished 1st and 2nd last year showed up again....darn.  I decided to carry my own water as the aid-stations would be unmanned all the way up.

We had a pretty nasty and very cold headwind until we finally turned up the canyon around the 5.5 mile mark.  I was glad to trade the wind for the uphill and actually ran better once we turned.  My goal was to get to the start before the half marathoners started.  I wanted to be there in 1:57.  I ended up getting there in about 1:56:30 so I was good.  The half wouldn't start for about 15 minutes so I was happy.  The last 2 miles up are very steep and my split on 13 was 10:50 with no walking at all.

I made the turn and headed back down.  My legs just would not give me the turnover to run the quick miles I had hoped on the way back.  I ran strong and never took a single walk-break the entire run so I feel good about that.  I was finally able to shed my windbreaker around mile 18 and the temperature was in the 40's.  The first of the half marathoners caught me around 21.5 miles.  Kory looked good as he passed and he finished in a 1:19.

My hip flexors started to bug me around mile 22.  Probably from all the hills (up and down).  But I was able to press on and didn't have any bonk miles at the end.  I finished in 3rd place overall.  The winner was in 3:22 (a new PR for him), and 2nd place was a 3:32 and 4th was in 4:17 so we were really spread out.  I managed to run this race only 42 seconds slower than the Pocatello marathon and considering the course is probably 15-20 minutes slower I feel I ran a good race.

It was 30 degrees and snowing this morning.  There was a fresh 3-4 inches on my sidewalks.  I put on my Santa hat and 3 sets of battery powered Christmas lights and ran the 1.5 miles to Perkins to meet up with a bunch of other runners for a Christmas Eve run.  The group run began at 7:00am.

There were 34 of us running the neighborhoods.  We stopped a couple times to sing carols to people....it was great.  I did, however, learn a powerful lesson this morning.  NEVER, and I mean NEVER, give Lowell Hawkes the code to your garage door.  During our run he suggested we go to Terry Jensen's house to sing.  Well, unbeknownst to us, Terry is out of town and his daughters family is living in the house while their new one is being built.  We actually snuck in, went downstairs, and WOKE THEM UP to sing Christmas carols to them.  Thank goodness I know them or I would have felt even MORE Awkward than I did.  Luckily Seth and Tara are good sports.  But Tara did vow to get even with us.

We went to a couple more places and the run ended up back at Perkins.  Most of the runners stayed for breakfast but Kory, Barry Ames, and I ran another 5 miles to get the mileage over 10 for the day.  Kory and Barry probably got 12-13 by the time they got home.

I ran 10.20 very fun miles with great company this morning.
