Woke up at 4:00am.  At 4:30 it started raining hard.  Luckily it stopped before I walked to the bus.  Temperature is good, humidity seems a bit high.

My goal today is a sub-3:20 which is a Boston qualifier.  It would also be my best time in 3 years.

First couple of miles went well.  Kept average pace around 7:10.  Pace slipped to 7:20 by mile 8.  My goal was to hit the halfway point around 1:35 to 1:37.  I came in just under 1:35 so all is well.

Miles 14-17 felt very strong.  Kept pace around 7:20.  Miles 18-21 were horrible.  Started getting a cramp right under my ribcage and couldn't shake it for 3 miles.  My pace stunk until mile 22.

Last 4 miles were better.  I finished under my goal time so I was pleased for now.

Bill, it's good to take a rest day to start the week off fresh. Bill I've decided to drive up to Provo Thursday night for St. George. I can't stay in St. George till Sunday. I'm going to stay the night in Provo and ride up to St. George on Friday with Sasha. Sasha, is coming back Saturday to Provo, then I'll get in my car and drive home Saturday night.

I hope this doesn't mess up your plans. If you don't respond to me I will call you. Thanks for the offer for the ride but again I will not be able to stay two nights so I need to come home Saturday.

Race: St. George Marathon (26.27 Miles) 03:07:57
Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

Got up this morning at 4:00am.  The weather channel said it was 72 outside but it was going to get cooler and rain and be WINDY.  I ate a bowl of oatmeal at 4:15, something new for me.

Got off the bus at the start at 6:15am and it was raining steadily and windy, yes a HEADWIND.  I tried my best to stay warm but I was pretty wet before the start at 6:45.

First mile in 7:13.  My feet are already sloshing in my shoes as I cannot see the big puddles of water in the dark.  The headwind is going to be nasty.  I wanted a 3:05 today but weather conditions will make it tough.  Mile 2 in 7:20.  Not looking too good.  Mile 3 in 6:59, getting a better pace now.  Still can't see very much.  Mile 4 in 7:00.  Mile 5 in 7:05.  Mile 6 in 6:48.  Dropping down to the town of Veyo.  Mile 7 in 6:54.

Got knocked around getting water at the aid station.  They had the cups mixed up so I was handed the wrong thing and had to double back.  Cost me about 10 seconds.

Time for the Veyo hills.  Mile 8 in 8:11.  Did not want to push too hard to save it for 2nd half.  Mile 9 in 7:56.  Ate my gel in this mile.  Mile 10 in 7:30.  My pace has slipped, but not too far to get it back later.  Mile 11 in 7:45.  Mile 12 in 7:19.  Mile 13 in 7:05.  That is looking better.

Half Marathon in 1:35:58.  7:19 average so far.  I need to go negative in 2nd half.

Mile 14 in 7:10.  Mile 15 in 6:56.  Ate another gel in mile 15.  Mile 16 in 6:45.  I am now on pace for a 3:09 or better, just ran a 6:45 mile, yet the 3:10 pace team just passed me???  They are a couple minutes ahead of schedule.  It started raining harder and the headwind really picked up as we dropped in to the Snow canyon area.

Mile 17 in 7:05.  Holding a good steady pace.  Mile 18 in 7:09.  Winchester hills coming up, trying to stay strong.  Mile 19 in 7:34.  Hill did not kill me, overall average pace still looks good.  Mile 20 in 7:03.

Ate my last gel in mile 21, Mile 21 in 6:56.  Feeling strong, legs OK.  Currently on pace for a 3:08 or 3:09.  Mile 22 in 6:59.  Mile 23 in 7:00.  Mile 24 in 6:55.

Passed the 3:10 pace guy in mile 25.  He was all alone.  I asked him where his group of 20-plus were and he said they ran ahead.  He finally slowed to the 3:10 pace.  Mile 25 in 7:02.  If I push the last 1.2 miles maybe I can get a high 3:07.  Mile 26 in 6:38.  I am passing a LOT of people now.  Last .2 miles in 6:24 pace.

Final time 3:07:57.  Fastest time in 3 years.  I was more than 4 minutes negative in the 2nd half.  Within 5 minutes of finishing I started getting cold.  I normally like to hang around and talk to people I know after this race but not today, I need to get dry soon.

I ended up winning my age group (40-49) in the Utah Grand Slam for the year.  I want to use this performance as a springboard for sub-3 next year.  Had the weather been better I may have come closer this year.  I feel very good about my effort today :)

Bill your putting in the miles. If your planning on doing the Half Marathon on November 1st as a fast race, I would do a good fast run down the Satterfield hill to get your legs used to a high turn over rate. If you want to get down to a 2:45 marathon teaching your legs to turn over fast is a good start. The downhill will help in this area. But you need to practice going faster than your marathon pace and treat it as a tempo run. Doing a good hard 4-6 mile tempo run once a week faster than your Marathon pace will teach you to run faster.

From Bill Mandler on Tue, Oct 14, 2008 at 12:59:05

Kory, thanks for the suggestion. I plan on working on a lot of base miles the next couple of months. I will try to do a tempo once per week and then do some better speedwork in the spring. I should be at 1:25 or better for the half on Nov 1st.

Hi there Bill. I just wanted to say that the fact you have run 67 marathons in 7 years makes me feel lazy! What is your secret? And as I am sure you ahve really good biomechanics and as I am not really built to be a runner, do you think that a 4:00:00+ marathoner can still achieve specs as lofty as yours? I would love to be able to finish even 20 marathons.

From wheakory on Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 13:08:06

I thought about doing Tucson myself, but I wanted to hold off and get more training in to make sure I can get a good performance. Although, that course is really downhill and looks fast.

Good luck I really think you have a shot at going under 3 hours. Just remember to back off the training a bit when it gets close. Over-training is no good going into a marathon that you want to perform well in.

Nice run and congratulations on the 100 mile week, but do be careful and not over-train for Tucson. I would work on doing some intensity miles for the next couple of weeks to work on the speed, because you definitely have the aerobic base build-up.

Bill, I have a question for you? I am also running the half marathon on November 1. And was wondering if maybe i am cutting back on my mileage too much? I read an article that says that to start cutting back on your mileage three weeks before the race. I am not sure if i did the right thing by cutting back. I have knowtice that you and Kory have not really cut back on your mileage that much. I am wanting to run a 1:30 half and I am thinking now that by cutting back i will not reach my goal! Thanks for your input.. Barry

From Bill Mandler on Sun, Oct 26, 2008 at 13:24:27

Barry, I think you are probably doing the right thing with your mileage. The half-marathon is not a goal race for me. I am using it as speed training for the Tucson marathon in December. I will, however, cut my miles back to 60-70 this week so I am fresh for Saturday.

I was thinking of doing the Keybank Vermont City Marathon on 5/24/09 which is just under 7 months away. Should I try to work up to 30 miles/week and hold there for a few weeks before thinking about any "long" runs? I did a 9 miler on Saturday and felt great :)

From Bill Mandler on Thu, Oct 30, 2008 at 10:42:13

Howling Commando,

First of all, congratulations on your recent engagement. I thought your story was awesome!!! As far as long runs go, the general rule is that your long run should not be more than 1/3 of your weekly mileage so you will need to slowly build both your miles and your long run. When I started marathon training my long runs increased by 1-2 miles per week and before I knew it I was running 20 miles.

Bill, I'm no where near ready for this race. I'm really just running it for fun, and might just pace Barry. But I could go out and see what I could do. If you want I could try to really push it to push you to PR.

But my body might just break down if I try going fast. I haven't been able to run really fast this week, because I've been weak and fatigued.

Just go out and have fun, what pace do you plan to run at?

From Bill Mandler on Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 11:32:11

Kory, I don't think I can go much faster than a 1:25....but you never know. I would rather have you pace Barry because this race is more of a goal race for him than it is for you and me.

From wheakory on Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 12:26:00

Just run by feel and take the first few miles a little easier on the extreme downhill. I bet you'll surprise yourself. I've ran the rest of the course and it's not easy with the rolling hills. By taking the first few miles easier will make the rolling hills not as tough on your legs.

10:13am: I know, weird start time. This year was the 3rd year of this race. Last year they had 14 runners, this year there were around 50. I was feeling pretty good and I wanted a 1:25 if possible. The bad weather held off so we had mostly overcast skies and some wind in spots but nothing bad at all.

The race started and Kory Wheatley and Dan Bruner took off along with about 6-7 other people. I ran a 5:53 in the first mile and was only in 5th or 6th place. Kory and Dan stayed together through mile 2 before Kory finally shook him and just coasted ahead. By mile 3 I was in 4th place and closing in on Brett who was in 3rd. I passed Brett and started working on Dan.

At the 5 mile mark Dan was around 2:00 minutes ahead of me. At mile 7 Dan was 1:05 ahead of me and the downhill was basically over. I was hoping that my extra miles the last month would pay off and I could close the gap. I gained 5-10 seconds on him each mile but there wasn't enough miles left to get him but I stayed focused on him and just plugged away.

At the turn on Grant St. (approx 11.8 miles) he saw me and pushed ahead to hold me off. The last 1.4 miles is more uphill than down and I crept ever closer. I was within 15 seconds of him at 12.8 miles and we both picked-up the pace. He ended up beating me by 4 seconds so he was 2nd and I was 3rd. I finished in 1:23:57, a PR for me in a half. Dan normally beats me pretty solidly so I felt really good about my finish. Kory ran a 1:14 and smoked us all!!

Nice run Bill your gearing up big for Tucson. I'm excited to see what you will do. I hope you eat at least 5 times a day all the running your doing. What is your meal schedule and what do you eat?

I usually eat 5 times a day just to keep the energy flowing.

Question: do you like the Pearl Izumi Syncroinfinity shoes? I was thinking about trying a pair, just because I haven't wore any Pearl yet.

From Bill Mandler on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 12:32:31

Kory, to answer your questions I eat a lot during the day to keep myself going. I have dropped 10 pounds since St. George just because of the miles. I am still at 145 and would like to get in to the 130's sometime next year.

As for the shoes I really like them but they are a bit heavy to race in. They are a good stable shoe and the part about no seams is nice but I rarely get blisters anyway.

From wheakory on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 12:44:30

Thanks, I haven't heard much about them expect for reviews I've read on several Pearl Izumi shoes. The one negative thing I've heard is that are not very durable.

Keep running strong and your going to hit a huge PR. One of these days I'll have to run with you.

7:30am:  24 degrees out but at least it was clear with fairly light winds.  The goal today was a nice long run similar to last Saturday.  I went the same route as last week and aimed to see how far I would get in 3 hours again.  I was happy with last week so I headed out to do the same.

But something happened today.  The farther I ran, the stronger I was.  My loop has all the easy, downhill miles in the first half and all the harder, uphill miles in the 2nd half.  I ran a negative split anyway.....and I NEVER do that.  I ran a couple of sub 7's in the 15th and 16th miles that came out of nowhere.  I really didn't push today but I got 23.50 miles in 3 hours exactly.

Up until last month I had never run 100 miles in a week and now I have done it in 4 of the last 5 weeks.  I will now begin my taper for Tucson....it is in 22 days!!!

I was thinking about going, but I have a football game next we that I'm playing in and I don't know how bad I'm going to get beat-up. It's definitely a good opportunity to get a good run in for the end of the year.

Bill, on your route you start out on Chubbuck Rd, and turn down Hiline Rd. then go up towards the Minidome and go around Redhill, then head back up to Satterfield Dr?

I'm looking for different routes with long mile runs.

7:30am:  It was about 40 degrees at the start.  I felt pretty good when we started.  The first mile was downhill then miles 2-4 had ups, downs, turns, you name it.  I was slower than I had planned at mile 5.  I was averaging 6:33.  Then we hit more straight and gradual slope so I was able to settle in to a better pace.  The good news is that it clouded-up and we barely saw the sun the whole way.  It was probably only 55 when I finished.  Except for the headwind the last 5-6 miles, it was perfect.

I hit the turn at the 10 mile mark averaging 6:25 so I was back on plan.  The next 4 miles were tougher with some nasty hills on an out and back up to the entrance of the Biosphere 2.  I hit the halfway point at 1:25:31.  By the time I hit the main road again at mile 14, my average had sagged to 6:35.

Back on the main road I was able to bring it down a few seconds over the next few miles.  I was moving pretty good through mile 19 when we started to hit a headwind and I was getting a little tired.  By mile 20 we had some uphills off and on until mile 23.  My pace faded due to the wind and hills and my fatigue but I still kept it respectable.

At mile 24 we had to make a sharp turn, run 100 yards uphill to the back of a strip mall, then make another sharp turn and climb again to the other end of the shopping center.  Then we got to make a sharp left to loop around a neighborhood to make the finish.  Mile 24 was bad but I did better the last mile even though I had to dodge a lot of half-marathon walkers that were clogging the narrow lane we had to run in.

I finished strong and set a new PR for myself at 2:53:24.  I was thinking I could get a 2:51 or 2:52 but I slowed too much in the last 4-5 miles.  I will keep working harder and I KNOW I can get that 2:45 in 2009!!!

I was actually planning on running a few treadmill miles this morning but I was not prepared for what happened overnight.  WE GOT BURIED!!!!  I had at least a foot of new snow and the wind was gusting to almost 60mph when I woke up.  I had drifts up to 6 feet in my yard.

Needless to say, my son and I spent at least 3-4 hours shoveling at my house and my mother-in-laws house just trying to keep us dug out .  Every time we finished, it just kept snowing and blowing.  My neighborhood looks incredible.  I called my parents in Montana and told them not to come down for a few days because there was no way they would make it.  Most of the roads are closed and the wind would keep it that way.

I am tired, my back hurts, and I will run tomorrow.......

BUT WE HAD A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS :)

No run today, just some weights and abdominal work.  I found out tonight that a friend of mine who has been battling cancer the last year and a half passed-away today.  He would have been 51 next Saturday.  He leaves behind a wife and 2 little kids both less than 4 years old.  I worked with him for over 11 years and he was a great guy.  Enjoy every day that you are given.  I know he is in a better place and will not suffer anymore.

I am sorry to hear about your friend. May the Lord look over his family and friends in this time of sorrow.

6:30am:  Kind of a different run today.  The temperature was almost 40 degrees this morning but the wind was blowing hard out of the South at 25-30mph, gusting to 40 sometimes.  The footing was tricky as our snow is melting.  I ran on slushy pavement, soft gushy snow, ice, puddles, and got splashed by many vehicles.  I ran 12.15 miles in a pretty slow pace.

6:00am:  Tried to get out earlier today......we are going skiing :)  It was 30 degrees this morning but the nasty wind was blowing 20+mph and it was cold.  It was in the 40's yesterday so we had a lot of melting.  I was either running on completely dry pavement (yahoo) or solid ice from melting snowdrifts.  I ran 10.56 miles.
