Woke up at 4:00am. At 4:30 it started raining hard. Luckily it stopped before I walked to the bus. Temperature is good, humidity seems a bit high.
My goal today is a sub-3:20 which is a Boston qualifier. It would also be my best time in 3 years.
First couple of miles went well. Kept average pace around 7:10. Pace slipped to 7:20 by mile 8. My goal was to hit the halfway point around 1:35 to 1:37. I came in just under 1:35 so all is well.
Miles 14-17 felt very strong. Kept pace around 7:20. Miles 18-21 were horrible. Started getting a cramp right under my ribcage and couldn't shake it for 3 miles. My pace stunk until mile 22.
Last 4 miles were better. I finished under my goal time so I was pleased for now. |

Got up this morning at 4:00am. The weather channel said it was 72 outside but it was going to get cooler and rain and be WINDY. I ate a bowl of oatmeal at 4:15, something new for me.
Got off the bus at the start at 6:15am and it was raining steadily and windy, yes a HEADWIND. I tried my best to stay warm but I was pretty wet before the start at 6:45.
First mile in 7:13. My feet are already sloshing in my shoes as I cannot see the big puddles of water in the dark. The headwind is going to be nasty. I wanted a 3:05 today but weather conditions will make it tough. Mile 2 in 7:20. Not looking too good. Mile 3 in 6:59, getting a better pace now. Still can't see very much. Mile 4 in 7:00. Mile 5 in 7:05. Mile 6 in 6:48. Dropping down to the town of Veyo. Mile 7 in 6:54.
Got knocked around getting water at the aid station. They had the cups mixed up so I was handed the wrong thing and had to double back. Cost me about 10 seconds.
Time for the Veyo hills. Mile 8 in 8:11. Did not want to push too hard to save it for 2nd half. Mile 9 in 7:56. Ate my gel in this mile. Mile 10 in 7:30. My pace has slipped, but not too far to get it back later. Mile 11 in 7:45. Mile 12 in 7:19. Mile 13 in 7:05. That is looking better.
Half Marathon in 1:35:58. 7:19 average so far. I need to go negative in 2nd half.
Mile 14 in 7:10. Mile 15 in 6:56. Ate another gel in mile 15. Mile 16 in 6:45. I am now on pace for a 3:09 or better, just ran a 6:45 mile, yet the 3:10 pace team just passed me??? They are a couple minutes ahead of schedule. It started raining harder and the headwind really picked up as we dropped in to the Snow canyon area.
Mile 17 in 7:05. Holding a good steady pace. Mile 18 in 7:09. Winchester hills coming up, trying to stay strong. Mile 19 in 7:34. Hill did not kill me, overall average pace still looks good. Mile 20 in 7:03.
Ate my last gel in mile 21, Mile 21 in 6:56. Feeling strong, legs OK. Currently on pace for a 3:08 or 3:09. Mile 22 in 6:59. Mile 23 in 7:00. Mile 24 in 6:55.
Passed the 3:10 pace guy in mile 25. He was all alone. I asked him where his group of 20-plus were and he said they ran ahead. He finally slowed to the 3:10 pace. Mile 25 in 7:02. If I push the last 1.2 miles maybe I can get a high 3:07. Mile 26 in 6:38. I am passing a LOT of people now. Last .2 miles in 6:24 pace.
Final time 3:07:57. Fastest time in 3 years. I was more than 4 minutes negative in the 2nd half. Within 5 minutes of finishing I started getting cold. I normally like to hang around and talk to people I know after this race but not today, I need to get dry soon.
I ended up winning my age group (40-49) in the Utah Grand Slam for the year. I want to use this performance as a springboard for sub-3 next year. Had the weather been better I may have come closer this year. I feel very good about my effort today :)

| Ran an easy 6.53 miles this afternoon about 2 hours after my 7 hour drive back from St. George. I was a little stiff from the drive and wanted to loosen things up a bit. It was really windy in Pocatello this afternoon but at least it wasn't raining like yesterday. |

Not a bad run this morning. Started out tired from working late on our restaurant remodel in Idaho Falls. Bad news....was up and down ladders, stools, etc assembling equipment. Good news...that stiffness in my calves is gone.
Finished with 2 fast miles. Very windy and cool this morning. |

Easy miles today. Ran 3 miles with Dr. Bob Fisher. The man has not missed a single day of running in almost 30 years. I like to talk running with him periodically. He still runs 55-60 miles per week.

| Ran at 7:30am after last nights snowstorm. Started out in light snow running in 2-3 inches of heavy, wet snow. Found some pavement around ISU and got in some better miles. Spent the last 5 miles running along the side of the road in 2 inches of slush. Easy, interesting run but I was soaking wet by the time I finished. | |

7:30am: I had today off so I ran later today, actually ran in shorts for the first time since Thursday. It was 27 degrees but warmed to 32 by the time I finished. I ran 15.12 miles in 1:58:46. Nice, crisp morning. It was nice to run in the light.
5:00pm: Ran an easy 8.15 miles in nice weather. 50 degrees and a light breeze. Did not push very hard as it has been several years since I have done doubles.

6:30am: Ran an easy 11.41 miles. It was 30 degrees and the moon was nice and bright so it was easy to see running around the fairgrounds loop. Ran 4 miles with Bob.
Went to Twin Falls in the afternoon to watch Nicole in her High school swim meet. She normally does 4 events (2 relays, 2 individuals). She was upset with herself after her 100-yard backstroke. Her goggles popped-off at the start and it messed her up. She has been working pretty hard and she wanted to do better. Got to bed late due to the trip.

I did not run today. I felt good enough.....I really wanted to, but I knew I should take a day off after last weeks 100 and the fact that I haven't had a day off in 10 days.
Did my abdominal work this morning and did lower body weights this evening. I am going to push for 90-100 again this week and then taper for the half-marathon on Nov 1st. |

6:00am: Ran 15.35 miles. It was 35 degrees, not too bad. Ran out to Chubbuck then South to Oak St. and up over the Monte Vista overpass, down Booth Rd. and then up Satterfield. Ran 6 solid, good pace miles. Felt really good after the day off.
5:15pm: Had to drop off my vehicle at Prestige Auto Annex to have my bumper and grill replaced after my fender-bender last week. A guy pulled out in front of me (said he didn't see me even though I drive a Toyota Highlander). My car is almost brand new GRRRRR. The man who runs the place is related to Kory. He asked me if I knew Kory because he saw my Boston Marathon jacket when I got the estimate last week. After I dropped my vehicle off I ran home. I ran up to Highline and ran the trail along the canal bank then up through the Mountain Park neighborhood. I crossed the freeway on Chubbuck road and then circled the fairgrounds then home. I ran 5.23 miles and it was a net uphill run because I live on the bench. The temperature was 62 degrees with a light breeze. It was nice. |

| 7:30am: Holy cow, was it ever windy today. It was 36 degrees with winds between 25 to 35 mph. It was a cold wind too. Cut right through me. I ran out through Chubbuck, down to ISU, up Barton Rd., across Alvin Ricken, up over Buckskin, across Parks Rd. down Pocatello Creek, up Satterfield, then home. Total 17.45 miles. The wind made it feel a lot harder than it should have been. | |

| 6:15am: I did my Chubbuck, ISU, Satterfield loop. It was 19 degrees but I must be getting used to it, it was OK. I ran 15.62 miles in a nice steady rate. An interesting note, city workers were putting up no parking signs along Flandro drive at 6:30 this morning. I think they are worried about the new Costco opening today. | |

| 6:00am: Ran with Barry and Greg today. We let Greg pick the route. We went West on Chubbuck Rd., then North on Hawthorne to Tyhee Rd. We then went West on Tyhee to some road past Rio Vista. It was too dark, I could not see the sign. Then we went South to Siphon, then East to Philbin, then south to Quinn, turned south on Pole Line, then East on Alameda up to Olympus then back to the start. We had 19 miles at this point so I ran the extra 3 I needed to be over 100 for the week. Did the entire 22.35 miles in under 3 hours. It was 35 degrees at the start so I wore shorts....it was nice. 2nd 100+ mile week in a row but this week I did it in 6 days instead of 7 and felt all the better for it. | |

| 6:15am: It was 25 degrees this morning.....I wore my shorts anyway because I'm like that. There was very little wind so it wasn't bad. I came across another runner on Warren Ave. His name was Alan. We were chatting and he asked me if I knew Kory. He said his daughter and Kory's daughter are friends. Hey Kory....does everybody know you? :) I ran 12.71 decent miles today, but didn't push too hard. |

Did not want to push too hard with the half-marathon coming up on Saturday. It was about 35 degrees when I started and warmed-up nicely from there. Ran some hills, both up and down, to prepare for Saturday. |

10:13am: I know, weird start time. This year was the 3rd year of this race. Last year they had 14 runners, this year there were around 50. I was feeling pretty good and I wanted a 1:25 if possible. The bad weather held off so we had mostly overcast skies and some wind in spots but nothing bad at all.
The race started and Kory Wheatley and Dan Bruner took off along with about 6-7 other people. I ran a 5:53 in the first mile and was only in 5th or 6th place. Kory and Dan stayed together through mile 2 before Kory finally shook him and just coasted ahead.
By mile 3 I was in 4th place and closing in on Brett who was in 3rd. I passed Brett and started working on Dan. At the 5 mile mark Dan was around 2:00 minutes ahead of me. At mile 7 Dan was 1:05 ahead of me and the downhill was basically over. I was hoping that my extra miles the last month would pay off and I could close the gap. I gained 5-10 seconds on him each mile but there wasn't enough miles left to get him but I stayed focused on him and just plugged away.
At the turn on Grant St. (approx 11.8 miles) he saw me and pushed ahead to hold me off. The last 1.4 miles is more uphill than down and I crept ever closer. I was within 15 seconds of him at 12.8 miles and we both picked-up the pace. He ended up beating me by 4 seconds so he was 2nd and I was 3rd. I finished in 1:23:57, a PR for me in a half. Dan normally beats me pretty solidly so I felt really good about my finish. Kory ran a 1:14 and smoked us all!!

I stopped at the restaurant to check something out on their security video system for about 45 minutes. When I resumed my run the wind was less, but it was now raining pretty hard. I ran 7.32 miles nice and easy after yesterday. I was soaked to the skin when I got home. Kind of fun actually.

6:15am: 22 degrees, windchill 15 when there was a breeze which was off and on. I ran 15.76 miles and felt really strong. Ran my ISU loop. The first 10 miles just slipped by with what seemed like little effort at all. On a side note, I grabbed a gel this morning on my way out. It was one of those free-bee gels I get at races sometimes. It was a Cliff gel in apple pie flavor.....kind of weird. It tasted OK but that "apple pie" burp I had after cresting Satterfield was one for the books. |

| 6:45am: Long run day. It was 32 degrees when I left and slowly warmed up. I wanted a nice, solid long run today and I did not disappoint. I did my usual Chubbuck, Hawthorne, Main St, S. Bannock to Indian Hills back through Ross park and ISU loop. Had a nasty headwind for the 8 mile South stretch to the turn at Indian Hills. Got my pace back after that. I ran for exactly 3 hours in what seemed like an easy run. Sprinkled some really good miles in a couple of places. I felt really strong the whole way. Great way to finish another 100 mile week. By my calculations, I am now in 2:54-2:55 marathon shape with 4 weeks to go until Tucson.

| 7:30am: 24 degrees out but at least it was clear with fairly light winds. The goal today was a nice long run similar to last Saturday. I went the same route as last week and aimed to see how far I would get in 3 hours again. I was happy with last week so I headed out to do the same. But something happened today. The farther I ran, the stronger I was. My loop has all the easy, downhill miles in the first half and all the harder, uphill miles in the 2nd half. I ran a negative split anyway.....and I NEVER do that. I ran a couple of sub 7's in the 15th and 16th miles that came out of nowhere. I really didn't push today but I got 23.50 miles in 3 hours exactly. Up until last month I had never run 100 miles in a week and now I have done it in 4 of the last 5 weeks. I will now begin my taper for Tucson....it is in 22 days!!!

7:30am: It was about 40 degrees at the start. I felt pretty good when we started. The first mile was downhill then miles 2-4 had ups, downs, turns, you name it. I was slower than I had planned at mile 5. I was averaging 6:33. Then we hit more straight and gradual slope so I was able to settle in to a better pace. The good news is that it clouded-up and we barely saw the sun the whole way. It was probably only 55 when I finished. Except for the headwind the last 5-6 miles, it was perfect.
I hit the turn at the 10 mile mark averaging 6:25 so I was back on plan. The next 4 miles were tougher with some nasty hills on an out and back up to the entrance of the Biosphere 2. I hit the halfway point at 1:25:31. By the time I hit the main road again at mile 14, my average had sagged to 6:35. Back on the main road I was able to bring it down a few seconds over the next few miles. I was moving pretty good through mile 19 when we started to hit a headwind and I was getting a little tired. By mile 20 we had some uphills off and on until mile 23. My pace faded due to the wind and hills and my fatigue but I still kept it respectable. At mile 24 we had to make a sharp turn, run 100 yards uphill to the back of a strip mall, then make another sharp turn and climb again to the other end of the shopping center. Then we got to make a sharp left to loop around a neighborhood to make the finish. Mile 24 was bad but I did better the last mile even though I had to dodge a lot of half-marathon walkers that were clogging the narrow lane we had to run in. I finished strong and set a new PR for myself at 2:53:24. I was thinking I could get a 2:51 or 2:52 but I slowed too much in the last 4-5 miles. I will keep working harder and I KNOW I can get that 2:45 in 2009!!! Here are my mile splits: 1. 6:11 2. 6:34 3. 6:37 4. 6:51 5. 6:28 6. 6:15 7. 6:15 8. 6:20 9. 6:18 10. 6:25 11. 6:50 (uphill)
12. 7:14 (lots of uphill) 13. 6:34 14. 6:44 15. 6:27 (back on a straight road0 16. 6:33 17. 6:30 18. 6:29 19. 6:37 20. 6:47 21. 6:49 22. 6:52 23. 6:49 24. 6:49 25. 7:05 26. 6:55 0.2 6:17 I finished in 16th overall, 15th in men's and 2nd in my age group out of over 1200 runners. It was a GREAT DAY!!! I know that MILES=SUCCESS and I want MORE!!!

| 7:00am: It was snow covered and icy in my neighborhood this morning and my legs were stiff from travel yesterday so I ran on the treadmill this morning. I ran 6.25 miles at a 1.5% incline finishing at a 6:58 pace. Legs are a bit tight from the race.

| 6:45am: It was 23 degrees this morning with light winds and some icy conditions. I ran 8.52 miles with 2 faster miles in the middle. My friend Jed was running 1/2 mile repeats so I ran 5 with him. We did them in 3:18 to 3:25. My legs only hurt when I ran downhill towards the end, so my stiffness is pretty much gone.

| There was a nasty blizzard this morning. I was still going to run, but my oldest daughter needed to work at the hospital in Blackfoot and the roads were really bad so I drove her up in the morning. There were wrecks everywhere on the freeway so I'm glad I took her. I made today my day off and will run tomorrow. |

| 8:30am: When I got up this morning I had a decision to make. It snowed again last night and the temperature was 4 degrees with a wind chill of minus 9. I could run on the treadmill (boring) or brave the weather. I put my Yaktrax on my shoes and went for it. It snowed the whole way and there was an inch of new powder on top of yesterdays frozen snow. It was a blast. I ran 15.52 miles in 2 hours and it was very peaceful. I am SO glad I decided to go outside. Besides, it warmed to 6 degrees with a winchill of minus 4 by the end so it was all good. The wind wasn't that bad and I was pretty comfortable.

| 6:30am: The temperature was minus-2 but there was very little wind and the moon was pretty bright so visibility was good. I ran 10.56 miles at an easy pace. My ankles are a bit sore from the snow running the last 2 days. They always have to adjust to the uneven terrain in the winter.

| 6:30am: It was 15 degrees and snowing pretty hard this morning. The footing was pretty bad, especially going uphill on Satterfield. There is enough snow on the streets in my neighborhood that you can safely drive a snowmobile down the street. I know this because my neighbor has already done it. I ran 10.51 miles slow because it was hard to run fast.

| 6:45am: It snowed all day yesterday and there was no way I could run fast. I have been slogging through deeper snow for 3 days so I needed a faster workout to maintain my leg turnover. I ran on the treadmill today and it felt good to go fast again. I ran 10.25 miles and averaged 6:58/mile with 2 miles at 6:31 all at a 1.5% incline. Yeah.....I stunk up my basement real good.

| 8:30am: It was 14 degrees this morning with a wind chill of minus-1. The streets are either snow-packed or have black ice from any melting yesterday so my Yaktrax were not the best solution. I grabbed an old pair of Asics 2120's and put 12 hex-head sheet metal screws in each one for traction. It worked really well and I felt like I was in good control in most conditions. I ran 15.62 miles in just over 2 hours.

| I was actually planning on running a few treadmill miles this morning but I was not prepared for what happened overnight. WE GOT BURIED!!!! I had at least a foot of new snow and the wind was gusting to almost 60mph when I woke up. I had drifts up to 6 feet in my yard. Needless to say, my son and I spent at least 3-4 hours shoveling at my house and my mother-in-laws house just trying to keep us dug out . Every time we finished, it just kept snowing and blowing. My neighborhood looks incredible. I called my parents in Montana and told them not to come down for a few days because there was no way they would make it. Most of the roads are closed and the wind would keep it that way. I am tired, my back hurts, and I will run tomorrow....... BUT WE HAD A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS :)

| No run today, just some weights and abdominal work. I found out tonight that a friend of mine who has been battling cancer the last year and a half passed-away today. He would have been 51 next Saturday. He leaves behind a wife and 2 little kids both less than 4 years old. I worked with him for over 11 years and he was a great guy. Enjoy every day that you are given. I know he is in a better place and will not suffer anymore. | |

| 6:30am: Kind of a different run today. The temperature was almost 40 degrees this morning but the wind was blowing hard out of the South at 25-30mph, gusting to 40 sometimes. The footing was tricky as our snow is melting. I ran on slushy pavement, soft gushy snow, ice, puddles, and got splashed by many vehicles. I ran 12.15 miles in a pretty slow pace.

| 6:00am: Tried to get out earlier today......we are going skiing :) It was 30 degrees this morning but the nasty wind was blowing 20+mph and it was cold. It was in the 40's yesterday so we had a lot of melting. I was either running on completely dry pavement (yahoo) or solid ice from melting snowdrifts. I ran 10.56 miles.
