I didn't run today. I just worked on the eliptical for an hour. I figure it is better than doing a leg pounding run.  I consider it part of a taper for me. Tomorrow I will run a few miles and rest from all cardio affairs Friday. Bring on this marathon. I am ready to conquer it.

You are handling this taper extremely well. You are definitely shaping up to have an amazing race. Kill it.

Just remember the last six miles and what you have to do. Save plenty in the tank because you can't run it on fumes.

Lily - if someone asks if you're from Alabama, run away as fast as you can. Just trust me.

Lily.... you will smoke it! No problem. Those last few miles can be killa though - so keep them in the back of your mind... Did you decide on a logo..

Jun I am really worried about the unknown. I've never raced a marathon-so I do not know what is going to happen to me. I can only pray that my training with endurance will be in auto pilot. I plan to eat a snickers and take a gel with caffeine around mile 18.

Burt ?

Oreo thanks for your mind words. I hope I can smoke it. When everyone says those last few miles are killer (which quite a few people have said that) what am I supposed to do to preserve energy? Allie told me not to try and push my pace up at that point at all because I will blow up (super sound advice fo sho). Anybody have any advice on how to reserve some in the tank for the last 6-7?

From Lily on Wed, Sep 15, 2010 at 15:29:08 from 67.199.181.73

Oreo that should have said 'kind words'. LOL sorry!

From jun on Wed, Sep 15, 2010 at 15:37:09 from 66.239.250.209

People have managed those last 6 miles differently, all with varying results.

Some will say to open it up a little more in the first 13 then keep it steady till 20, so you can drop off a little on the hills.

Others have said to find an even pace from start to 20 below your target pace for the whole race so you can drop off going up the hills.

Finally, a few have said to go steady and then just push the hills, hoping you have something left in the tank.

I'll leave it up to you to decide which is best.

The more I think about it- dang I should have had someone come up the course at mile 18 to pace me through those last few miles. I don't wanna blow up!

i agree with RP, that is the best chart. it gives splits for even EFFORT, rather than even pace. that seems to be the key for this course. i used it in '08 and the splits were right on.

i feel bad that i even said anything about blowing up. i certainly didn't mean you specifically, but more as a general rule for the course. you are going to do great, lily. believe in yourself and remember all of the training you have done to prepare. *warning* this may sound dumb, but i think you can somewhat control the blow up with your mind. maybe not always, but i do think the mind plays a huge role in the outcome of a race. it helps if you tell yourself you are NOT going to blow up. picture yourself running well all the way to the finish. i know you have the ability to endure anything that comes your way. use that mental fortitude! you are ready. go lily!

From Oreo on Wed, Sep 15, 2010 at 17:48:47 from 206.81.136.61

I agree... you're ready.. Just have fun, let it roll, and go based off how you feel. I think those final miles have a lot to do with mental toughness too - so you shouldn't have a problem...time to R&R...

From Nan on Thu, Sep 16, 2010 at 00:10:57 from 24.8.144.22

Ditto do RP and Allie.

Positive mental imagery goes a long way. Just keep an even effort. That final 10K is a challenge and your pace may drop off a bit but stay tough and you'll get through it.

Good luck!

Settle in and let it roll, you have nothing to worry about...you ooze positve energy and determination...just do what you do!
