I wore the same thing as yesterday, but the 12-17 degree difference made my bum a little chilly. I will have to wear some basketball shorts when it gets down towards 5 or so degrees.

Today in Dynamic fitness we did indian runs for 20 minutes. Indian runs are where you go at a jogging pace and the person in back sprints to become the person in front. As soon as there is a new front man, the new person in back sprints to become the new front man. My group was slooooooow, at first I swear it didnt feel like more than a brisk walk. I really enjoyed being the man inback, because I would sprint to the front then jog at a quick jogging pace for myself (a fast pace for everybody else in my group), it was fun to see how long it took the back guy to catch me and take my place. This was a more entertaining run, would have been better if it were with a faster group.

I was feeling really good until about mile 10. I got to mile 12.2 which was a t in the road. Going left would have been up a canyon, and going right would have been going up a giant hill, so I turned around. Thats when I noticed that I had been running with a tail wind and didnt recognize it. It was now a strong head wind that didnt go away. So the last 9 miles were straight into the wind.

I was excited for this marathon, I hadnt trained as much as I should have, and my training really slacked after Mackson was born.

When we started out it felt like we were walking, so I left Jason and Carol and went on my own. It turns out they were going a good pace and I started out way toooooo fast. I cant blame my poor time on just starting out too fast, but I am sure it didnt help.

This is what I am going to count as my first training run for my next marathon. Last marathon I trained a little slow, I didnt reqally like it. It made my runs seem like a drag.

My training schedule said to run 3 miles, but I feel that if I want to reach my goals I need to put in a few more miles per week than what it is asking, so I did 6.

I wanted to run fairly fast today to get my heart rate high for a while. I feel like todays run went great. It was raining for most of the time, but I love running in the rain, so it was fun. It was around 60 degrees, and a little bit of wind. Fun run.

5.11 miles, left home at 10:30 pm. I normally would not have done this run, but for my next marathon I have extra motivation (at least I am calling it motivation to be positive, as of now I see it more as an obligation, hopefully that changes). I worked a long day and got home late, then didnt have the drive to go run, so I left late.

My run was supposed to be 6 miles, but I cut it to 5.11 because of a PWRNIT. I think this is my third, and by far the closest to a PIMP.

I started out slow and tired, but eventually got into the swing of things.

6.38 miles at 10:00 pm. I think this was the distance, my watch battery was dead, so I used map my run. I did a little bit of hill running. I ran the same 1.4 mile route 4 times. It has a big down hill that is about .3 miles long, then a steep uphill that is about .25 miles, then about .9 miles of gradual down hill.

This was an ok run. I really need to change my diet and the time of day that I run, I am really not liking this running past 10 pm thing.

10 mile long run for the week. I took it very easy for the last week and a half to try and give my knee some rest. I ran up the canyon and back.

This was a good run for not having run much for the last little while. However, at about mile 7 I had a sharp pain in my knee where it has been hurting. I slowed down a little and changed my form a hair to try and not hurt it more. About 1/4 of a mile later it happened again, but was good after that. After the run it feels good.

I wanted to try and mainatin my mrathon pace the whole, and then push it hard in the middle to make it a 10k pace for a few miles. It went pretty well, and I am pleased.

This was a great run. I pr'd by a little over 6 minutes. This gave me much more confidence for the full in 3 weeks. I had a gu 45 and again at 15 before the race. I started out at a pace that I thought I could hold. I wanted to break 1:20, I had the paces for 1:16 written on my arm (I knew before the race that that probably wasnt going to happen), ultimately I just wanted to PR and do good. I took a gu at 5.5 and again at 10.5, both followed by water at the next aid stations. Wind didnt kick in until about mile 5.5 and it lasted until about mile 10. Overall it was a good race. I had fun, and I felt good, and I got a new PR.

how do you get your maps to post to your blog?

From Tmck on Tue, Sep 13, 2011 at 20:04:36 from 129.123.227.94

Just above the map there is a button called "Embed". Click on that. The map will disappear and a some writing will take its place. Copy that writing and paste it in your comments for your run. After you post it, you will need to click on edit, and re-post it, then it will show up. I dont know why, but you have to post it twice.

I got a PR!!!

Before every race I always lay awake in bed thinking about the what ifs. What if everything goes perfect and I do amazing, what if everything goes wrong and I do horrible, what if get injured and cant finish, what if I stopped thinking and actually got some sleep, what if..... This race was different though, because I was on the pace team and was aiming for a 3:10 and knew exactly what I wanted to do for every mile. I used the even effort chart, so I knew what I was going to try and do. I had trained well and was 90% sure that I was going to be able to finish in 3:10.

Because I didnt have a case of the what ifs, I was able to fall asleep quickly (before 10:30 p.m., which is not normal for me the night before a race). At 11:00 p.m. my wife woke me up to tell me that someone who I had just installed a furnace for had called me 3 times and left a voice mail. She woke me up just in case it was an emergency. I was too tired, and it was too late, so I didnt want to deal with it. But this gave me another case of the what ifs. And this time it was all about work, and not running, which is waaaay worse. I was able to fall back asleep around midnight.

I woke up at 3 and ate a tortilla and a banana, then went back to bed until 4:30. I got up, got dressed, and had my wife take me to the shuttle spot. The bus ride up was pretty loud, people were talking. I usually try to sleep a little more, but it was obvious that that wasnt going to happen, so I joined in the conversation with the people sitting around me. We got to the start line took our pace group picture then got ready for the race (bathroom, clothes,,,).

There was a slight rain at the start of the race (the bad rain had just passed minutes before), which felt nice. Luckily it wasnt as cold up there as we had been told it was going to be.

Mile 1 started out a little slow, I was about 5 seconds slower than I wanted to be, same thing with mile 2. Mile 3 I was 8 seconds faster, 4 11 seconds faster. At about 4.5 I felt my stomach rumble and knew I needed a toilet. I sprinted ahead of the other pacer and got to the portapotty. It was just a gas alert, which was good because it was quicker, but bad because I had to sprint and stop. I got out and the other pacer was about a quarter mile ahead, I ran fast trying to get my time down to what I wanted for that mile. I ended up being only 8 seconds slow. This same thing happened around mile 17.

By this point we had a group of about 15 people that were going to run with us and shoot for 3:10. It was kind of fun to talk and try to help and be the lead pace setter for the group.

There was a pretty bad rain/hail storm at about miles 13-15 that soaked us to the bone. It wasnt super fun, but I had to pretend and say that it was to sound positive and try to keep the other runners positive.

Between miles 15-18 our group of about 15 was spread out quite a bit. By 19 the group was gone, and I was basically running with people I hadnt seen all race. I dont know if that is me failing as a a pacer, or if they failed as the pacees???

I will save all the details, but by mile 22 I was about 2 minutes ahead of my schedule, and I could feel my legs starting to want to quit, so I was really glad that I had gone a little faster. My miles started getting slower than my pace chart, but I was pushing and trying my hardest to bring it home strong.

As I rounded the final turn and could see the finish, my watch said 3:09. I didnt have it as the large display, so it wasnt showing the seconds. I knew I was close to reaching the goal, but I didnt know how much I had to spare. I kicked into gear and took off. As I got close to the finish line I saw the clock right at 3:10:00. I crossed the line at 3:10:08, but I also started a few seconds after the gun time, so I wasnt sure. I was so happy with my finish that I forgot to stop my watch. I didnt realize it until a minute or so after when I saw it reading 3:11. I knew I was close, but didnt know how close until they posted the results. In the end I finished at 3:09:49, 11 seconds ahead of what I was supposed to. It felt great.

This was my best run so far. I PR'd by 11 minutes and 45 seconds!!!

Let it be known, that training really makes running fun.

Allie, Congratulations on another first overall, thats awesome. Im glad you said I paced it perfectly, It was a little frustrating to come across the finish line without anyone from my group at the start, but what can ya do?

Kam, I was was looking at some pictures on my wifes blog of me coming down the hill at mile 24. I saw someone tailing me really close. I thought they are smart, they are drafting off of me, then I realized it was you. Good race, way to set a PR on a crappy day.

MarkP, This is the first race that I actually committed myself to train for, Running is waaaay better when you are prepared. Good luck at St. Geaorge.

10 miles. I was thinking of going 8 miles today to give my legs some rest. But I have been saying for a couple of months that TOU was going to be a training run for the Layton marathon. If this week was actually a training week instead of a recovery week I would have gone 10, so I did 10. Now I just have to take it easy and avoid injury.

This run was ok. I could feel that my legs still arent feeling 100% from saturday, but I was able to give it a good go today, and I am happy with the run.

6x hill. I run a hill that is about .28 miles long that has an increase of about 70 feet.

After doing the hill 6 times I was only at about 4.2 miles or so, so I ran around a little bit more to get it to 6 miles for the day. I am starting a taper for Layton, but I am worried that I will lose some of my training by doing it. I just need to trust what the experts do.

4 miles with increased tempo in the middle. 4 miles is the shortest run I have done for a while, but that is what the schedule says to do. My calfs are still sore from saturday and I really felt them after this run. The run went well, I was able to get a sub 7 mile in and averaged 7.28 over the 4.

I did this run a little faster than normal. This was my last good run before Saturdays marathon. I will now only do short slow runs to taper. The wind was blowing extra hard today because of how warm it was yesterday, and I really felt it on mile 6. After my run my knees do feel a little sore, but nothing that is making me too concerned.

4.25 miles on treadmill while watching baseball. This was a not so fun run until the diamondbacks hit a grandslam. I am by no means a diamondback fan, but I noticed something funny when he hit the homerun, I started to run faster. I didnt mean to, or even think about it until I noticed how close I had gotten to the front of the treadmill. Im sure its something phsycological of seeing someone else to a great thing.

I did the Layton Marathon on Saturday.

Layton Marathon.

This race didnt go at all how I had planned. I did TOU 3 weeks ago as a training run and ran it a little slower than I could have and came in at 3:09:49, so I thought I could do at least that, maybe a little better. The course was not down hill like TOU, but I still thought I could do it.

Things started going wrong before the race even started, a couple days before I ate a lot of junk food. I learned my lesson and will never do that again before a race. I also took an anti-gas pill before the run so that I wouldnt have to stop at a port-a-potty just in case. The pill worked, I didnt have to stop and go to the bathroom, but I did get a terrible stomach ache that started at about mile 3 and lasted until mile 6ish.

I knew that there was a hill somewhere on the course, but I couldnt remember what mile it was at. There were several times that I was running up a hill and thought "this must be the bad hill", then a mile or so later I would think the same thing. Then around mile 6 I actually saw the hill, and thought "thats the hill". It was quite a hill too, 1.34 miles long. I was averaging about 7:07's when I got to the hill and mile 7 was 7:59, and mile 8 was 7:35. I did get some of the time back on mile 9 (6:54), but I didnt get the energy back.

I was averaging about 7:14 when I got to mile 10 I thought "I will run a negative split and get my time back down, I can still beat 3:09:49. By the time I got to 13.5 I knew it was over. I could literally feel the energy just leave. That was the earliest in a marathon that I ran out of energy. It is an awful feeling knowing that I would have to fight for 13 miles to finish.

Mile 13 was 7:35, not too bad, but nothing like I had wanted. After that each mile got harder and slower. Mile 17 I got off the causeway and saw my family. They tried to motivate me, but all of them said they could tell how tired I was just by looking at me. I was leaning to the right, meaning I had gone back to my bad form due to my tiredness.

I just kept trying to push and keep going. I was passing half marathoners consistently, and no marathoners were passing me. I thought I was about the 10th marathoner or so at about mile 18. Around here my wife ran with me for a bit and I told her how bad it was going, call me a downer, but I was not having the best race. 18 is when the cramps started. I was able to fight them for about 3/4 of a mile, but eventually had to walk them off. I walked for a short while, then was able to run from 19.19 to 21.59, then had to walk again. The running/ walking continued until the end. The cramps got progressivly worse. I could feel giant knots in both quads, and my hamstrings were in a lot of pain.

I just kept on pushing and giving it what I had. I eventually got to the last turn where I saw my dad. He helped me push it to the finish. I ran the last .5 miles with straight legs. I couldnt bend them due to the cramps, but I couldnt walk it in. A marathoner passed me at mile 26, so I had to peg leg a little faster and pass him, then he passed me, then it was on. I peg legged as fast and hard as I could to beat him. I ended up beating him by .4 seconds. The second I crossed the finish line I thought both hamstrings were going to explod. I bent over and grabbed both of them and yelled for 30 seconds or so. I have never wanted to cry so bad because of running, but I couldnt because of all the people. Someone came and asked if I needed a medic or trainer. I said I was just cramped and needed time.

Overall this was an awesome race. I saw 2 bison on the island, which was really cool. I was hoping to see more than that, but with more than half of the island in the dark, I am satisfied with the 2 that I saw. The course was a beast, a definite gut check. Next year I will know what to expect and what to do better. Of the 6 marathons I have done, this was my third fastest, and by far the hardest I have done.

This was a good race, and I hope to be back next year.

My watch died with half a mile left, but here is the info from my garmin...

30 minutes on Treadmill. My knee felt better today during work, and doesnt hurt so bad after my run tonight, hopefully this is a sign of things to come. I do have some time I could take off to let it heal (not running a marathon until may), but I would prefer to run for a while and see if the pain gradually goes away.

Run tonight went well. Nothing too good or too bad, just a decent run on the treadmill.
