4 miles in Rexburg. First run in a couple of months. I wanted to go slow for obvious reasons, and not do too long of a run. IT was about 12 degrees outside, luckily I didnt notice any wind. My left knee feels a little sore, but not too bad. I will watch it and see how it feels tomorrow.

I think it was just a hair under 1.5 miles, but my time was 9:15. Exactly one year to the day I did 1.5 miles in a different class, and my time was 10:58. I was pleased with my progress.

I did the race of 3200 meters in 13:12. I need to lose this 20 lbs of hibernation and get back into shape.

First run in a while. My watch didn't pick up the satellite signals for about half a mile, that was annoying. Overall it was a decent run.

6 miles, about 10:00 am. This was a good run. My knees hurts a little bit after yesterdays run. I am hoping that was because I ran on the track. Today was not very windy, only aout the 3rd time in the 4 months we have lived in Rexburg.

Today I did 6 miles at about 11:45. It was about 70 degrees, which is a big change from the 40 degrees I had been running in (except on saturday), so it felt a lot hotter than 70. I ran the same route I did on saturday, and I am sure my time was quite a bit slower, but I dont know for sure because my watch died about 1.5 miles in. I got really tired around mile 4. I hadnt eaten in about 6 hours, it was hot, my watch was dead, and I am trying to lose weight by cutting calories, all of those things added up made me tired and groggy around mile 4.

I am doing a half marathon next month, and need a lot of improvement before I can even hope to do well. We will see how it goes.

6 miles at 7:45 p.m. It was about 65 degrees. I wore a long sleeve tech and shorty short shorts. The long sleeve shirt may have been a little much, but it wasn't too bad.

This was a good run. I felt like I had a ton of energy and I was able to just go and go. I was planning on doing 3 x hills, but I felt good and turned it into 5x hills.

My watch is acting up, so again I cant upload my run here. Hopefully I can get that figured out.

I woke up at 5:30, looked out the window and saw a lot of wind (kind of). I thought about moving my run to later in the day hoping the weather would improve, but then decided to just do it. I got dressed and went outside and right as I started to run the weather started to snow. It was a real light snow, but it was still snow. My hands were very cold because I couldn't find any gloves. I wanted to take it slow because my left knee felt a little funny yesterday on the anterior lateral side inferior to the patella.

The run went well.

The forecast for last night was snow and cold cold cold. I woke up this morning (around 7:15) and looked out the window to see no snow, and what looked like 50-60 degree weather. My spirits were instantly lifted (I was not looking forward to running in snow). I checked the computer, and it said it was 33 degrees. But it looked at least 50, so I went outside, and it was definitely not 50. Even though it was cold, there was no wind, and the sun was out, so that was nice.

It was windy, so windy that I got blown off of the sidewalk at one point, good resistance training. I wanted to do a slow jog to the hill, but I found myself going rather fast having the wind at my back most of the way to the hill. I went 2.37 miles to the hill, did 6 .25 miles up and backs, then headed back home for a total of 7.5 miles.

Ogden Half marathon today. My sister won a free entry for the half and the 5k, and she was nice enough to give me the half marathon entry. I have never done this race and didn't really know what to expect going in. I thought if I got 1:30 that I would be happy, and ended up doing 4.5 minutes faster, so I am really happy. I was just able to keep pushing and didn't get too overly tired at the end.

I did the full marathon last year, and they started about 10-15 minutes late, so at about 6:57 I thought I would start doing some light jogging to warm up, and head to the start line. I ran across the field once and they announced that the race would start in less than a minute, so I jogged to the start, got my watch ready and with no time to spare we were off and running.

I knew that the first mile had the only real hill in it, so I wanted to start kind of slow and take it easy, but who ever actually starts out slow? We all say we are going to, and it is so hard to actually do it. I was watching my heart rate and thinking "this is too fast, I need to slow down". I really didn't want to let how everyone else started influence me to start out too fast and not do as good as I could.

Mile 1 was 6.38, faster than I wanted, but I thought I would take it especially since the only hill is now out of the way. People were passing me and I was trying not to let that get me down. There were a couple of people in particular that passed me and were going pretty fast. I thought, "I am going to beat them". One was a teenage kid with bouncy hair, and the other was a guy wearing a roosters jersey. Mile 2 was 6.40, and my heart rate was high, but I kept going. Mile 3 was 6.48. All of these times are what I was hoping for, but my HR was still high.

Mile 4 was 6.49. The downhill starts at about 4.25, and I was pretty much in my place of a group of about 40 runners stretched out over half a mile (my place was dead last in the group). I thought that I would catch them here and get out in front, but of course they were going to use the hill as well. For the next several miles I stayed where I was, maybe jumping back and forth with a couple of people. Mile 5 was 6.26, 6 was 6.32, 7 was 6.27, 8 was 6.23.

By the time we came out of the canyon I had passed a lot of people and was running along with a guy and a girl who I had picked out from a few miles back. It took me over a mile to catch them, and then right at the mouth of the canyon I saw my family. My HR was higher than I wanted (about 175ish), then right after I passed my family I looked down and it was at 182ish. That is a lot higher than I had wanted, I knew I wouldn't be able to hold that. After about 200 yards I looked to see where the guy and girl were. It took a while to catch them, and we ran together for about .25 miles, but they were now way behind me. Seeing my family really got me going, something about my wife speeding up my heart. Mile 9 was 6.09

I got to the trail with my HR way higher than I wanted but i was thinking maybe I can push hard for the last 4ish miles. I began picking people out who were in my sights, and passed them one by one. Mile 10 6.16, 11 6.42, 12, 6.31. I came around the last turn and I see the bouncy hair kid and the rooster man. There are about 100 yards in front of me with about .9 miles to go, and they were right next to each other. My heart rate is at about 186 and I can't believe I have held this high this long, but only .9 more to go and I have to beat these guys. So I push a little harder. I get to them with .4 to go, and the bouncy hair kid starts to walk. I try to cheer him on and tell him we are almost there, he tries to go, but stops again after only a couple of paces.

I pass both of them, and pick it up one more time, there is a guy almost to the finish and I want to beat, I start pushing hard, I pass him with about 20 feet to go, then he passes me, DANG! I guess I started my final push a hair too early. Mile 13 was 6.28, and 13.1 was about 40 seconds (I forgot to stop my watch).

The entire race all I was seeing was my splits and HR, I wasn't adding up my splits either, so when I got to the finish and saw 1:25:30, I was very pleased with my race, I was expecting around 1:30 if everything went great, and I guess I under estimated myself.

After the race I ran up the canyon to get my dad who was doing the full. I had to go 1.25 miles up the canyon to find him, and then I ran with him for 4.75 miles. Total of 19.1 miles today. The last 6 were at a good pace, felt good today and I am way happy with the results.

Yeah I think I remember you. Did you have on a green or yellow shirt? I think you are right we kept passing each other through the canyon. Anyway, great job you ran pretty even splits throughout much of the race.

Cool you are up in Rexburg, I went to school there in the early mid 90's when it was Ricks and still had a Cross Country and Track and Field program.

Good luck with your training over the summer keep it up.

9 miles on the treadmill. It is super windy today, it has been constantly blowing at about 25-35 mph with gust up to 50 mph, so I was not going to run outside. I rode my bike to the gym and started my 9 miles. I hate running on treadmills, and apparently rice and beans is not a good lunch 3 hours before running. I was only able to go 3 miles, then had to stop and go to let some lunch out. Then I did 3 more, and had to let some lunch out. Then I did 3 more and rode home, uphill, straight into the wind, it was a hard bike ride.

This run was nice and slow, I am still really sore from Saturday, so I went slow to not hurt myself.

The weather was bad again, and I wasn't feeling up to running down hills with my sore quads so I went to the gym and ran on the treadmill.

I did 13 miles on the treadmill in a cotton shirt, and got my first bloody nipples, a runners trophy. I have a new blister forming under neath where the last one was, which sucks.

This was an ok run, I averaged about 7:45's. The treadmill had a 30 minute max with a 5 minute cool down period. So I ran 4, then had to start over, then did 4, and started over, then did 4 and started over, then did 1 to give me 13. This was probably the furthest I have ever gone on a treadmill, and it was probably one of the most enjoyable treadmill runs I have done.

9 miles at 3:20 pm. I went outside today, I have to quit being a baby about the weather. It was windy and slightly rainy, but not too bad. During this run I was supposed to do 3 miles at marathon pace. I am not sure what my marathon pace is, so I just tried to push it. I may have pushed it a little too much, my quads are really sore, and my left knee is sore. If I am able to recover from this run by tomorrow, I would call it a good run. If not, I went too hard too soon after the Ogden half.

First run over 2 hours in a while (probably since October), but I wasn't going for speed, just time on the road.

The first 7 miles were the best looking 7 miles I have ever seen, dang she is good looking.

I ran in my gray shoes instead of the green ones because the gray have about 40 less than the green pair and about 30 less than the white pair, I want to try and catch them up to the others.

Last night and today the pain had been moving up to my knee, and occasionally my hip has felt funny. My family physician assistant (My father-in-law) says I need at least 2 weeks off of it, so I will be getting pretty saddle sore for the next little while. But if my foot heals, it will be worth it.

If I am going to go out 7, I might as well go out 7.5. And if I am going to go out 7.5, I might as well go out 8. I didn't want to do anymore, because I dont want to push myself too much and get hurt again.

I felt good for most of this run. For some reason my right nostril was bleeding for most of the time, but I only noticed it when I would fire a rocket or wipe it. I had plenty of energy, and if it didnt get too warm I feel like I could have gone a lot further. I wasn't trying to go very fast, but about 7:30's felt really comfortable, which is about 15-20 seconds faster than what usually feels easy.

Today I did my first triathlon. It was a reverse tri. Started out with 3.1 mile run, then 12 mile bike, and finished with a 600 yard swim. There were 4 heats, and about 15 people in my heat. I took 3rd in my heat, and don't know what place overall. But I wasn't racing anyone, I was just trying to enjoy my first triathlon.

The run had a good sized hill about half way. I finished the run in first, by about 20 seconds. The biking portion was on stationary bikes. I thought the bikes were calibrated for resistance-miles, but I learned at about mile 6 that it was just revolutions. I then released all the tension and tried to pedal as fast as I could. The first 6 miles really killed my time. I took a GU and some gatorade on the bikes. I was fourth coming off of the bikes. I am not a strong swimmer, but I had a few weeks of practicing a little while ago. I finished 3rd in my heat with a time of 59:16. It was a lot of fun, and I am positive it won't be my last triathlon.

I started out holding back a little so I could warm up, then after the first mile I started to push myself. I was going to try and push it for 3 miles, then cool down for 3, but decided midrun to push fast for 4 miles (counting the fastish warmup mile) then slow down for the last 2 miles. Overall it went well, and could be one of my quickest pace's for a training run.

The triathlon was lots of fun. I think Maybe in a few years (maybe next year) i want to get more into those than marathons. We will see. My hamstrings were way sore, but I was still able to run.

Today (tuesday) I ate yogurt about 90 minutes before I went running. I had to stop 6 miles in and use a bathroom. So I think it is all just when you eat, and not eating too much fiber. :)

Total Distance

10 miles at 5:52 pm. It was 85 degrees, and sunny. I wore a long tech and short shorts. It was warm, I wouldn't want to go if it were much hotter than this.

This run went well, I am trying to train around 7:30's, and I was able to do that today. Something about the heat makes me go a lot quicker. I had to stop at 6.29 miles for a #2 break, I planned my run so I passed a park about every 2-3 miles. Other than the bathroom break I was pleased with this run. I started to get a little tired around mile 8ish, I am hoping that it was because of the heat.

14 miles at 6:30 am. My goal was to average 7:30's for this medium run for the week. The temperature was about 55 degrees, and there was a slight wind, it felt really good outside.

I started out a little slow to warm up, then just tried to get my average to 7:30, and I did it. After my run when I was getting ready to cool down, I saw a plane flying really low. It was doing a loop and was going almost right over our apartment. I thought Mackson would love it, so instead of cooling down I sprinted to go get him so we could watch the plane for a bit. It was fun

10 miles at 8:30 am. About .25 miles into the run I realized that during yesterdays run my armpits got rubbed raw. So I took my shirt off at 1 mile and laid it on the grass. Then for 8 miles I was thinking about whether my shirt was going to still be there or not, luckily it was.

I ran 10 miles and wanted to do 3 consecutive miles (miles 7-9) at marathon pace. The run went well, I felt good the whole time, even when I was going at MP. I felt like I could have gone faster every mile, but this is training, not daily racing.

17 miles at 5:45 am. I started this run with the intentions of averaging around 7:30's. I did a slower mile to start, at about 8 minutes, then I started to just run and not think about running. I just wanted to feel comfortable. By mile 6 I was feeling really good. My pace had picked up to less than 7:30's, and I didn't feel like I was pushing myself at all, I still felt comfortable and relaxed. By mile 12 I noticed that my feet felt like they were landing perfectly, and my arms felt like I wasn't holding them to high (I feel like I have been holding them high for a while). Mile 12 was 7:01, and I didn't feel like I was forcing myself to run that fast, it was just a comfortable pace. The next 5 miles felt really good and the slowest mile was 7:07. Mile 16 was 6:48, and again I wasn't pushing myself to hit that, I was just running relaxed.

Overall this was probably the best long run I have ever had. I felt good and relaxed and I was very pleased with my pace. I think this week of running has been the best I have had in the 4 years I have been running.

11 miles at 5:30 am. I felt a little sluggish for the first 4-5 miles, but I eventually got into a groove that felt nice and relaxed, and somewhat fast. It is always nice when you feel relaxed and are running a decent pace. Towards the end of the run I knew I was close to averaging 7:30's so I pushed it the last mile, which is uphill for more than half of it. It felt good do run hard up a hill, it has been a while since I have done that.

Today was my birthday, and for my present I gave myself another day of running. I had thought a while back that I would take today off, but what good would that do me?

After each 800 (2 laps) I would run 1.5 laps at a slower pace then do it again. It was going well until the 2nd one where I got a very bad stomachache. It was hard to just push through and finish, but I had to do it. My legs felt good, my HR felt good, my lungs felt good, I felt good except my stomach was killing me and it forced me to slow down a bit. Unfortunately this run was not normal in anyway, so I don't know what caused the stomachache.

8 mile tempo run at 10:30 am. I did 2 miles at what I normally do the first 2 miles, then I increased my pace gradually over the next 3.5 miles hitting my peak pace at about mile 6-6.5. The rest of the 7th mile was still faster than regular pace. I tried to run the last 2 miles at a slower pace to cool down.

Overall this was a good run. I felt a little tired the first mile and really thought about just doing an 8 mile run rather than the tempo portion of it. I am glad that I convinced myself to stick my original plan.

I was thinking that maybe I would have posted before you did. Nope, I was wrong. My long run this week was today. It was supposed to be 7 miles, but I only did 6.73. I ran over 18 miles this week and I no loner make excuses to not run. In fact I went bed "early" last night so I could get up at 6:00 am. I am wondering when I changed. I finally can say that I look forward to my runs in the morning.

This was a good run, I am pleased with my pace and Avg HR. And this run put me at 72 miles for the week, my longest week ever, and first 70 mile week!

What is the next race you are running? I am amazed by you every day. You basically ran a half marathon. That is what I am training for and you already did it this week! What time do you go to bed to get up at 5:15? Are you getting enough sleep. I'm excited that I am at 106 and have been for a while. I am eating pretty healthy but I still have treats occasionally. I like that I am to my "goal" weight. When I ran the TOU in 2009 I weighed 106. Maybe this time I will have more muscle and less fat.

From Tmck on Tue, Jul 17, 2012 at 09:44:52 from 157.201.110.162

I am doing the Idaho Falls Half this saturday, then Top of Utah full, then maybe another marathon in october depending on how my legs feel. I usually wake up at 4:45 so I can leave by 5:30 for my runs so that I can be to school by 7:45. Most nights we go to bed between 10:30 and 12:00, and no I dont get enough sleep at night. But I do take a nap just about everyday for an hour or so around 5:00 pm.

I havent had gluten for 29 days, and no treats for 38 days. I crave candy and treats all the time, it stinks. I am glad you are reaching your goals.

If you are amazed by me, you would have been really amazed with Jason, he was doing about 10 miles or more a week than I am doing now when he got hurt. I am hoping I can avoid that.

I got to sleep until 6 this morning. I laughed last night when I told Crystal that 6 is sleeping in for me. I did 15 miles today and started around 6:45. I should have taken a gu with me to eat about half way through, because I started to feel sluggish around 13 miles. I dont think I would have gone faster or anything, I just think my head would have been in a better place for the last 30 minutes.

Overall I was pleased with this run, even with feeling somewhat sluggish at the end. I started out at a good relaxed pace, and slowly increased it without even thinking about it. I have been having a lot of good relaxed runs lately, and I love it.

When I got to class the teacher said he decided to drop a test, so if we were satisfied with our grade, we didnt have to take the final. This made me happy because I wouldnt have to take the final, but upset because he didnt tell us earlier. I could have already been done running for the day.

This run didnt go so well. I had to take a bathroom break (#2) at 2.42 miles and again (#2) at 6.38 miles. I never got into a groove and felt like I was laboring the whole time. Not the kind of run I wanted to have 2 days before a race.

This was the first year that this race has been put on, and it showed. Besides some minor things that add up, overall it was a well designed race and I am sure next year it will be awesome.

I took 2 gu's before the race (probably don't need them for a half) and some water. The first 6.5 miles of this course are basically like running down a cliff. The course drops 1300 feet in that short distance, and it was impossible to hold myself back. It was about 60-65 degrees at the start, a little too warm, so at each aid station I would drink half of my water then pour the other half on my head to cool down. After the first 6.5 miles I was all by myself. I could see a guy (wearing all blue) about half a mile in front of me, but he had been that far in front of me for a while so I wasn't thinking about him. I was just thinking about how slow I felt like I was going after flying down the steep road.

At about mile 8 my wife and Mackson were on the course to say hi. As I passed them Crystal informed me that I was in 5th place and that the 3rd place guy had just been walking. This gave me motivation to try and catch him. If I can catch him, then I am in 4th, and maybe that will give me the motivation to catch Blue. By mile 9 I had passed the guy Crystal told me about. He took 2 walking breaks and I caught him on the second. Blue still looked strong and still had a good lead on me, but it was getting smaller. By mile 10 I thought for sure I was going to get him, but I didn't know how long it would take.

Near mile 11 I was on his heels and getting ready to pass, but I also had to clear my throat, and didn't want him to hear me sneaking up on him, so I resisted the urge to clear my throat until I passed him at about mile 12. By the time I was heading into the finish line I looked back to see if he was getting ready to counter attack, but he was no where in sight. I tried to finish strong and do the best I could the entire race, and overall I am pleased with the way the race went. I was hoping to finish under 1:20, but today wasn't the day for that, too hot and too steep (and probably not enough training).

Congrats on a great race.

jtshad, I was amazed at how fast you guys shot off of the line, and even more amazing is that you were able to keep the pace! Nice race and good job on the PR, I guess it wasn't the heat or course that prevented me from getting mine, but more of me not being fast enough to beat my old self.

I never meet other fastrunningbloggers at the beginning of races, its hard to know who is who. We should develop some sort of sign or something to let others know so we can meet everyone.

My legs feel a lot better today. I think by tomorrow they will be close to 100%. I did an easy 8 miles today, at about my normal easy run pace. I didnt feel like I was pushing hard and my legs felt comfortable the whole time.

For about .25 miles I had a dog running right behind me barking, it was really annoying and made me regret not taking my pepper spray with me. Just once I want to blast a dog right in the face and teach it a lesson. This was the first time I have had a dog chase me since living in rexburg. I liked the route I chose today, which was completely different than the normal route I do. Now I know that if I decide to go that way again, take my pepper spray to fulfill a dream.

Leave the pepper spray at home and take a gun. I peppered two dogs last year and this year they're worse. One bullet might make it more of a magical dream not a reoccurring one :)

10 miles at 5:00 am. Right when I started running I could feel that I didnt have much energy and that it wasnt going to be the best run ever. I was also out of clean underwear so I opted on the commando run because my running shorts have a built in liner. That is the last time I will do that. About 5 miles in I felt that I was getting some chaffing, and by the end of the run it hurt pretty bad.

20.5 miles at 4:00 am. I went to bed at 1:00, and woke up at 3:30, 2.5 hours of sleep wasnt as bad as it sounds.

I ran from my parents house to my in-laws house. I have never run that route before and didnt know where any places were to get drinks, which turned out to ruin this run.

I took a gu at mile 6, followed by no water. At mile 12 I saw a 7-11 and took another gu and went in and asked for some water. They let me have a cup and let me drink to my hearts content. The problem is that I didnt have any water at mile 6, and my mouth was so dry by the time I got to 12. I was also in need of water because I had run 12 miles. So I drank too much water, which really hurt me around mile 16. I got a horrible side ache that just wouldn't go away, so for the first time in a really long time, I had to walk during a training run. I then had to just go super slow to be able to keep the pain from getting unbearable.

I started out with just a warm up mile and didnt look at my watch at all during mile 1. Towards the end of the run I was trying to go a bit faster than easy run pace and push it a little, and I am pleased with how this run went.

I started off kind of slow and didn't feel like I had much gusto when I got to the track. I did a warm up lap and then ran the first 800 at a faster than normal pace but something I felt like I could repeat 7 times. After each 800 I did 1.5 laps of recovery in about 3 minutes then repeated. I was well pleased with how this run went. This is probably the fastest average pace I have run 800's at.

10 miles at 9:45 pm at the gym. I woke up this morning and was unable to get out of bed due to tiredness. I worked a long day yesterday (first time in 7 months) and didnt feel like running. I had to do some work on one of the apartment buildings for a few hours, then mow the lawn, so I figured I would just run at night. When night came I wasnt really feeling like I wanted to run outside in the dark with a headlamp, so I decided to go to the gym and watch the olympics while I ran.

This was supposed to be a tempo run, and I did pick up the pace over the span of 4 or 5 miles, but not to a point where it was a speed workout or anything.

Total Distance

22 miles at 6:00 am. I went to bed last night late because my wife ran her first half marathon. It started at 10:00 pm and she finished around 12:15 am. She did awesome. She has been batteling a knee injury in her training, and I was amazed and proud that she still got her goal of 2:15.

I was asleep probably by 1:30, and woke up at 5:15, not a ton of sleep, but better than what I got last saturday before my long run. I did almost the same route as I did last saturday, only I went the opposite direction. It was way easier to run from my in-laws to my parents rather than from my parents to my in-laws. The elevation difference between their houses is about 600 feet, and it makes a huge difference (1200 feet difference).

I took a small water bottle with me because I didn't want to have what happened last week happen this week (too much water at mile 12, then stomach cramps from 16-20.5). It made a big difference to be able to drink the water after each gu (mile 6, 12, 18) rather than a ton of water at just mile 12. It was also nice to be able to take a sip every once in a while when I felt like I needed it.

Overall this was a good run. I felt good and was even contemplating going 26.2, but I guess I decided I wasn't feeling that good. I was under 7:30 average, which I am waaaaaaaay pleased with. This was a good way to end my highest mileage week ever. Hopefully next week I can hit 80 miles.

10 miles on a treadmill at 10:00 pm. I woke up incredibly tired after a long weekend with the family. I was not in the mood to go running (ever since the Idaho Falls half, I havent really been in the mood for running). So I figured I would go tonight. When night came, I was not in the mood for running, but I have a streak going of almost 100 days straight (not counting Sundays) of either running, swimming, or biking (I only swim or run to recover from injury or races). Because of my streak, I had to go running.

I got to the gym and had to treadmill hop to 3 different treadmills during my warmup so I could get the best view of the Olympics. I started my run, and my Achilles tendon was bothering me (it has been hurting since my 22 miles on Saturday). I knew it would be an uncomfortable run, but I am hoping this is a pain/injury I can train through.

The run went well, I even did a couple miles a lot faster than I normally run, maybe that will come back to haunt me.

I was supposed to do 12 miles, but I was battling gas, and decided to go to the bathroom at 8.25 to let it out just in case it was more than gas. I am glad I decided to go to the bathroom to let it out because it would have taken a long time to clean that treadmill!  :)  After being in the bathroom for a few minutes and my HR dropping down to the mid 90's I decided to just call it a day. I still had a good workout with the hill repeats.

If I do it anytime soon, it would probably be in January or February to give me something to train towards during the winter. After October I usually dont have anything to train for until late spring or summer of the next year, and I get fat and out of shape.

Hopefully an awful Treadmill Marathon will help prevent that.

9 miles on treadmill at 2:30 pm. I was tempted to do 12 today and then with my long run tomorrow I would have hit more miles in this week than my brother ever got before he was injured, but i decided that there is plenty of time to add on miles. Better safe than sorry.

This was my 5th run on the treadmill this week, and I cant decide if I am going to do my long run tomorrow on one or not. I probably won't but it would be ....... (I dont know a word to put it) to do a full week of training on a treadmill. I guess flat, or boring, or un-scenic could all fit.

This 9 miles wasnt bad. I feel like I could have done more, but I wanted to save some for my long run tomorrow. I didn't hit lap on my watch at every mile, so I only know my average pace.

Lately I have really been looking forward to my friday runs because they are shorter, and I just havent been excited about running (hence going later in the day and having to run on a treadmill to avoid the heat).

24 miles at 5:30 am, not on a treadmill. It took a few miles before running on the road felt normal. For a little while It felt funny that I was moving forward, and the ground wasn't moving backwards. The weirdness of running on the road for the first time in a week shows by my mile splits for the first few miles. I was also taking it easy, knowing that i had 24 miles ahead and didn't want to start out too quick. It was dark for the first few miles, so I couldn't see what my mile splits were, but when I saw that mile 4 was around 8:15 I was a little surprised at how slow I was going. I guess it is better to start slow and be able to finish than to start fast and blow up at the end.

The only thing memorable about this run is at 22.83 miles I thought I got shot in my right hip. It was only for 1 step, but it hurt BAD!!! After that it was a little sore, but nothing like the initial pain.

My pace for this weeks long run was 18 seconds slower a mile than last weeks long run, but this week was all out and back, and last week I had 600 feet decline over 22 miles, so I am not concerned.

Derunzo- I have been running for 4 years, and I haven't ever been consistent. I am hoping that with improved dedication will come greater reward. You are pretty consistent yourself, how are the plans for a marathon coming?

From Derunzo on Sat, Aug 11, 2012 at 10:51:18 from 24.218.176.97

Thanks for asking Tmck.... I'm hoping to be healthy enough to run my first marathon in late October. I would love to hit that 3:10 mark for my age group to BQ, but just finishing is the big picture goal. Do you recommend hooking on with a pace group?

From Tmck on Sat, Aug 11, 2012 at 13:24:52 from 69.20.153.156

That would be awesome to hit 3:10 in your first marathon. I have never run with a pace group, so I don't know. I was a pacer last year at Top of Utah for 3:10. There were about 15 people that started with our group (myself and another pacer). By about mile 18 I was by myself, even the other pacer dropped off the pace. Hopefully that isn't discouraging, but I can't say for myself if pacing groups work. I never run with other people, so it was kind of hard to talk to others while running. Maybe others have better experiences with pacers.

5 miles on treadmill at 9:30 pm.

This was my first run since Saturday's long run. When I woke up Saturday I had a tiny sore throat, nothing that was going to slow me down. Sunday when I woke up I thought "I am glad I don't have to run today". Monday I woke up and thought my throat kills, I will run tonight when the pain goes away. Around noon I decided I should take the day off and let my body recover from the sickness. Tuesday the pain was just as bad, and Wednesday my sore throat bug was still there, but not so bad, but it got replaced by the lazy bug. So after going 98 days in a row (not counting Sundays) of either running, biking, or swimming, I missed 3 in a row. But I am back now.

I didn't time myself on tonight's run, but I think the pace was about 7:41 over the 5 miles. Now I am tempted to do 2 long runs in a row to rack up some miles, but I should probably just have a low mileage week, and get healthy again. I guess I will see what I decide to do.

Oh, and taking Nyquil (spelling) gives some pretty cool dreams!

Oh, my wife is the best!

26.2 miles on treadmill at 7:30 pm. I was planning on doing a treadmill marathon in January or February, but today seemed as good as any to go ahead and try one. We went to Idaho Falls today, and on the drive back it looked like the air quality in Rexburg wasn't very good, so I decided then my long run would be on a treadmill, and I was planning on doing 26.2.

I ate a piece of bread about 50 minutes before I left for the gym, and then 2 cookies about 15 minutes before. I usually take a gu before, but lately I have decided that cookies and sweetish fish are just as suitable for simple carbs before a run. I took 4 gu's with me to the gym (I imagine it would be hard to pile cookies or sweetish fish on a treadmill) and got all set up to go. I asked the gym employee (my brother-in-law Chris) to change the channel so I could watch some preseason NFL. I found yesterday that watching football really distracts me from my running.

I started out at an easy pace (7.7 mph), and stayed around there most of the run. Every 5 miles or so I would go a little faster, but I didn't want to push it and hurt myself 3 weeks before TOU. I took a gu at 45 minutes, 90 minutes, 135 minutes, and 180 minutes. At about 2 hours and 45 minutes I went to hit the lap button on my watch and a gu fell, hit the treadmill and shot behind me. Luckily about 10 minutes later Chris came and asked if I needed a refill on my water, which I did. He handed me my gu, got me some water, and I was ready to finish my first treadmill marathon.

Overall this was a great run. It was the second fastest I have ever run a marathon, and I wasn't even pushing myself by any means. I wasn't shooting for time, but distance. I have a feeling that if I was trying to PR (3:09:49) I could have done it tonight.

My total time was 3:18:40, an average pace of 7:34.63.

I would put my splits, but I only changed the speed on the treadmill like 4 times, so they are all pretty even.

Scott, it wasn't nearly as bad as I had imagined. I guess several weeks of only treadmill runs made me really enjoy running on treadmills. Plus watching football while doing it was nice and ditracting. I am thinking in January or February I am going to try and break 3 hours on a treadmill.

Total Distance

13.1 miles on treadmill at 7:00 pm. I had planned on doing 10, but whats 3 more miles? My calves were a little sore from Saturdays 26.2 mile long run, but nothing that I am concerned with.

This run went pretty well. I had planned on doing a mile of warm up and then increasing the speed every mile. I started at 7.8 mph (7:41) for a mile then increased to 8.6 mph (6:58), held at 8.6 for 2 miles (I think), then went back down 1 mile at a time to 8.3.

Total time was 1:35:02, an average of 7:14.95 and my average HR was 158.

All day under both of my patellas felt a little strange, so I chose not to run today. I think I may have slightly overdone it between Saturdays 26.2 and Mondays 13.1. I say I am going to listen to my body and not get hurt, and my body was saying take the day off. I love when my body says that.

My knees feel better today, so I am going to do doubles today and tomorrow to make up for not running on Tuesday.

1:00 pm, 8.5 miles on treadmill in 1 hour. I started at 7.5 mph then every 0.25 miles  I increased the speed by 0.1 mph until I hit 8.5 mph, then I increased the speed by 0.1 mph every half mile. At 9 mph I held it for 1 mile, then decreased the speed by 0.1 mph until I hit 8.5 miles (I was at 8.6 mph).

Overall this was a good run. I did it exactly at my goal marathon pace for TOU and I felt good and relaxed the whole time. I definitely could have held the 9 mph pace for much longer than 1 mile, and I am sure I could have averaged the 8.5 mph for much much longer.

8:00 pm, 10.5 miles on treadmill. I was planning on doing 8.4, but decided to just do 10.5 and give me 19 for the day. I started out at 7.8 mph and increased the speed by 0.1 mph every mile until I hit 8.1 mph. I then held it there until my average speed reached 8.0 mph. I then took the speed down to 8.0 mph and finished the run at that speed. I just wanted this to be an easy run.

This is the first time I have done a double, and I feel REALLY GOOD for having run 19 miles today. Makes me wonder if I should try and get a 120 mile week in the next year or so by doing 6 doubles in one week.

I still feel good even after 19 yesterday and 10 already today.

4:30 pm, 8 miles on treadmill. I averaged a little over 7.8 mph (about 7:41) for 1 hour and 1 minute and some change. Very easy, relaxed run. I didn't want to try anything tricky and overdo it.

I feel surprisingly well for having run 37 miles in the last 2 days. Maybe doubles are the way to do it. But I have a hard enough time getting myself to run once a day, twice a day is probably only a rare occasion.

I felt good the whole run, and I finally got a dog with pepper spray. I went past a house that 2 dogs always come out and follow me down the road barking. Today there were the 2 regular big dogs, and like 6 little kick dogs. I got one of the big dogs right when he got to the road, and he backed off. All of the kick dogs followed him. The other big dog stayed about 10 feet off the road, and barked while it was running parallel to me. Maybe next time I do this route I can get him. I am hoping they will stop coming out to the road.

My Garmin read 26.35, weird.

Today I was a pacer for TOU. I paced the 3:05 group, and finished in 3:04:38. I also got a PR by 5:11. Overall it went really well, and I am satisfied with the results. I felt like I was holding myself back for all but 3 miles, and I still got a PR.

I guess it's time to finish my entry for TOU. I have never felt so prepared going into a marathon as I did for this one. This was my 7th marathon, and I had no doubt that I could get 3:05 which was going to be a PR by about 5 minutes. I have been consistent in my training and listened to my body. If I felt extra sore or had an injury I went to the pool or rode a bike rather than just resting or fighting through the pain.

At the start line when people asked if I had to prove that I could run 3:05 by doing a couple times before, most were shocked that I was pacing for a PR, but I absolutely knew I was going to be able to do it. Based off my half marathon time a month ago and my workouts, I think a 2:55 wouldn't have been out of the question.

Long story short: As pacers we weren't allowed to be more than 2 minutes ahead of a positive split at the half way mark if we wanted to be able to pace again. When I got to mile 12 I saw that mile 13 was going to have to be pretty slow in order to not have started too fast. I was looking at my watch often, and I knew I was ahead of pace the whole time, but not by much. I told the group running with me that 13 was going to be slow. One of them ran ahead to use the bathroom, and the others took an easy mile with me. Up to that point all the miles had been under 7:00, and 13 was 7:14, I felt like I was almost at a walking pace. I got to the half way mark at 1:30:38, 8 seconds in the green.

Now that I was good to pace future races, I could get back to running what felt easy and relaxed, while watching my speed to make sure it was a good pace for those that 3:05 was their goal.

Longer Story Short: by mile 18 I was still feeling great. I was having fun and trying to encourage those running with me. By mile 24 a kid that had literally been at my side the whole way started to drop back. I tried to talk him into keeping it up, but he dropped back and finished about 4 minutes after me. I finished in 3:04:38, a PR by 5:11, and it felt easy the whole way (probably how pacing should feel). After the race I had several people come up and thank me for helping them reach their goal. Last year nobody said anything to me (I finished alone).

I am glad I was smart about my training, and I am hoping I can be smart again and get a huge PR next year. I am also blessed to have a great family that supports me. I was one of the few runners that had fans in the canyon. My Mom and Brother were on their bikes in the canyon, and both kept riding ahead to cheer me on throughout the race. My Wife was at several spots on the course with our son cheering me on. My Dad and Sister were in a car driving to many spots to give me support (not food or drink, just cheers). my sister in law and her 5 kids were at a few spots to encourage me. The people running with me kept mentioning how I had a lot of fans. It really does help to have people cheering for you, and I have proof from the Ogden Half.

This was my fastest, easiest, and funnest marathon. But training was my hardest, most frustrating, and by far the most rime consuming.

Derunzo: I wish I could stay motivated with running, but I am having trouble seeing it happening. Luckily as I was leaving the town that the marathon was in I saw a road bike at a pawn shop. It was a good deal, so now I am a step closer to mixing in some biking. It kind of makes me sad that I am looking for something else, but hopefully the drive comes back.

I don't want to do super high mileage in case I am not fully recovered from TOU, and I don't want to take it super easy in case I won't be prepared for the Utah Marathon. I am hoping to get in a decent amount of miles over the next 10 days or so, then do a smaller taper.

Today I started out a little quick, then picked it up over the next 4 miles, then took mile 6 a little slower. I am wanting to train faster than I normally do so I can become a faster runner, but it's a fine line of training faster and killing myself. I will see what I can do.

That is sort of a tricky situation - you need to make sure you aren't beating down on tired legs, but also don't want to go into "de-training" before the Utah Marathon either. I think you've got the right idea, though - run somewhat normally for the next week or so, pay close attention to making sure you aren't too worn down, and then do a shorter taper going into the next marathon.

Overall this was a great race. I was impressed with how well it was organized, especially for being a first year race (although I think the race director was involved in the old SLC and Las Vegas marathons). I was originally planning on running the SOJO marathon next week, but was able to get into this race for $10, and I couldn't pass that up.

Going into this race I wanted to set a new PR, but knew that it would be difficult considering the course profile, but I was going to shoot for it anyways.

Friday night my Dad (ran the half), sister (did the 5k), and myself stayed in a hotel about 6 blocks from the start line. It was great not having to wake up at 4:30 to catch a bus, but slept until 6:00 and took my sweet time getting ready. We headed to the start line about 6:35, dropped off our bags, and warmed up a little. I told my Dad good luck, gave him a hug, and then I headed up towards the front of the starting line (not that I really belong up front, but I feel I am a little faster than average). When I got to the front I saw my friend who was doing the half, he told me to come to the very front line with him and the other fast people. I informed him I am not one of the fast ones (he took third in the half, he is one of the fast ones).

It didn't take long after the gun went off to feel like I was in a good groove. I was watching my pace and trying not to start out too fast. About 4 miles in there was only about 3 other marathoners I could see. I chatted with one who is also from Rexburg for about 2 miles, then turned my music back on and tried to focus on running. I enjoyed running through SLC, but noticed that a lot of the city smells like a port-a-potty, but it was still fun to run through some nice parts of the city.

By mile 7 I was still feeling good, and we were just starting to hit some of the hills. There was a pretty good steady uphill climb for about 3 miles, and I felt great running them the whole time. I was still hitting my paces, and felt great.

The next 13 miles were rolling hills mixed in with the occasional monster hill that was trying to break my spirits, but I was trying my best not to let it happen. By mile 11 the other kid from rexburg was about 200 yards ahead of me, and another runner was about 50 yards in front of me. I kept telling myself to run my own pace and to not let them make me run faster than I wanted to. The guy about 50 yards in front of me slowly came back to me for a few seconds, then pulled ahead of me again for about a mile. At the aid station at mile 12 he missed the GU table and stopped to pick up a GU. I passed him and wouldn't see him again until about mile 20ish (I never did see the other kid from Rexburg, he killed the hills and finished in 2:58).

By mile 16 the hills started to wear me down, and I was fighting the urge to walk for a while. The hill at mile 17 (4 for the half) was a beast and did a good job of reminding me that I hadn't done hill training in a while. Around mile 20 the guy who stopped for a GU caught back up to me and gave some encouragement, I wish I could say it helped, but I could feel that the next 6 miles were going to be a battle between myself and myself. And hat a battle it was. But I am proud to say that I feel like I kicked the crap out of myself and won the battle.

I was passed by another guy at mile 22 (red sox). When he passed me, I looked back ad couldn't see anybody coming, and I could also up on a hill that we had just ran down that turned back towards the city, so I was able to see the competition for about 1.5 miles back and no one was there. At this point I knew I wasn't going to catch the guys who passed me, they looked strong, and I not only felt weak, but I felt defeated, but I also knew nobody was going to catch me. So I just kept my legs going.

Every now and again I would get a little cramp for a few seconds but nothing bad that seemed to slow me down, so I just kept chugging along. I had already started to pass some of the half walkers and was now seeing more and more of them, so I knew I was getting close. At the final turn I saw my wife, I tried to smile but I don't know if I did. I was finished and tired, and very satisfied with my result. 3:15:08 felt like an accomplishment for me. I saw the clock at 3:04:?? and thought "I can beat 3:15, but my legs didn't go any faster, and I don't really care that they didn't. I was done and satisfied.

I ended up with 1st in my age and 8th overall. For my efforts I got 2 medals exactly the same but with different colored ribbons (the prizes are the only thing that I was disappointed with about this race).

Looking back I wish I would have done 1 thing differently in training, lots of hill running. During the race I wish I would have taken some of the GU Brew (I had never had it before and didn't want to be hitting every port-a-potty).

My splits were 6:55, 7:09, 6:56, 7:03, 7:00, 6:59, 6:58, 7:19, 7:10, 7:14, 6:36, 7:01, 6:53, 6:54, 6:59, 7:45, 6:53, 8:19, 7:57, 8:19, 8:05, 7:48, 8:14, 8:02, 8:22, 8:18, 2:00 for .2 (.3 according to my garmin)

Awesome job on a hilly course! You're a marathon slayer!

45 minutes on elliptical, 10 minutes on recumbent bike. If it were just up to my legs, I could have done some running today, but the bottom of my left foot is in a lot of pain. It feels similar to the pain I had back at the beginning of the year. I think I just need to do some plantar fasciitis stretches when I wake up every day.

4 miles on treadmill. My left leg has been injured for about 2 weeks now, and I was just letting it heal. I didn't want to try and run too far today because of my injury, and because I havent been running very much since the Utah marathon which was almost a month ago.
