5 miles this morning back in Bullfrog, Lake Powell.

Me and my wife were talking about running new year resolutions and we both decided to train for the St. George marathon again this year.

I've been a little discouraged and distracted for a few years in running, as far as running fast goes.  She encouraged me to run fast again.  So, I'm hoping for a new PR in St. George this year.  I now it's a little early to be announcing this, but if I do, I'll challenging myself.

I know how much work it takes and I guess I'll have to come up with a program now.  It's exciting.  It'll give me something to work towards.

Another 5 miles today with the dog.  Not as cold as it has been.  My fists and arms were kind of numb all day and night.  I think I must have worked the bag too hard yesterday.

My pants are starting to fit better again, that's a good sign. I don't have to suck in my gut to get them on anymore.

5 cold miles this morning.  I spent the weekend with the family in the big city of SLC.  Had a good time.  Did some sledding and swimming with the kids.  It's nice to go to a real city from time to time.  It helps the misses keep her sanity.

I'm officially back to work.  I've taken all my annual leave and it's time to get back after it again.  I need to start cracking down on the training, being more consistent and start running more days and ramping up the miles eventually.  I haven't done speed forever, it's going to be fun and painful.

Whenever you are in Laughlin, you need to go to the snack bar at the Pioneer Casino. They have a prime rib sandwich on toast that is freaking delicious. It might possibly be the best food on earth.

6 mile run this evening.  I also did push ups, sit ups, weights and hit the heavy bag for awhile.  I'll have to take it easy on the bag.  I hurt my wrist hitting it and ankle kicking it.  I'm trying to get in running shape here, kicking the bag isn't worth a hurt ankle.  It's a little counter productive, but it's sooooo fun.  Kicking the poop out of something that can't kick back makes me feel sooo touch.

6 mile run with the dog.  Did weights today as well triceps and biceps, push ups, sit ups and beat the bag for awhile.

I need to start eating better.  I work my butt off and don't see the results I'm shooting for.  Every time I'm out of town I eat junk and a lot of it.  I was watching the biggest looser with my wife last night and decided it was time to start eating better.  We'll see if I can stick to this new resolution and how much it adds to my performance.  I've never really watched what I've ate in all the years I've been training, so I'm curious to see how it effects the bottom line.

Writing this makes me want to eat a Big Mac and some ice cream, I'm already crumbling!!!

7 miles this morning.  I got a little bore of the same route, so I mixed it up and little.  I wasn't sure about the distance, so I ran with the GPS.  I hate running with that thing.  When I wear it, I'm constantly looking at it, it's a big distraction.  I know I need to wear it more so I know where I'm at and so it pushes me to got faster, but it kind of takes the fun out of the run for me.

i know what you mean about a GPS being a distraction. for me it's kind of like when you are on a treadmill. when you can see the miles ticking by .1 at a time, it makes 1 mile take forever. but you just can't stop looking at it!!! great run.

That sounds like a good plan for the summer. I am planning on about 90 mpw too. To answer your questions, I am not from Cedar City, but have been here for school and have been teaching/coaching for 3 years. I have talked to you a few times after races and I know Travis Williams. He mentioned you to me a couple of years back. He said that he had an elite friend.

A very fast run this morning.  I was pushing so hard towards the end I just about threw up.  My last half mile was all sub 5 minute!!  My training program actually doesn't have me doing any speed until the first of April.  I'm just building miles right now.  I tend to forget every now and again.

Tuesday night I was playing Basketball as I usually do.  As always I'm a little hesitate, because it seems like I get hurt every now and again.  I took a nasty elbow to the left side of my ribs.  I was going up for a rebounds and someone was coming down.  After it was all said and done, he said it felt like his elbow hand sunken about half way into my chest.

It hurt pretty bad. I don't really care about the pain.  I'm just mad because of the set back to my training.  Anyway, I'm done with basketball, it's not worth it!!!

It got up early this morning to see about putting in a run before work and my ribs hurt too bad.  I hope they aren't broke!!  I broke two ribs on my right side about 3 months ago!!

So I didn't run in the morning, but I ran tonight instead.  I ran 8 mile at a 10 minute per mile pace, I pretty upset.  I tried half a sit up and gave up.  The push ups and heavy bad wasn't too bad.

8 miles this morning, felt pretty much the same as last night.  Kind of hard to take a deep breath.  I really had to slow it down.  I did manage to run a little faster.  My last two miles were  8 minute miles.  Still not anywhere I should be.  My ribs don't hurt as bad as they did when I broke then 3 months ago, so I'm optimistic about them healing faster this time around.

8 miles this morning @ slower then you!

Yea, the ribs still hurt.  I was however able to run the first mile at 9:15 instead of 10:00 like I've had to the last two days.  By mile 4 I was up to 8:00 minute miles and keep that pace util I finished.

It's slow I know, but it's about all I can handle without having to take deep breaths, which hurt the ribs.  The breathing was a little easier this morning, so I think they are starting to get better.

I did push ups, skipped the sits ups altogether.  The weights didn't really seem to affect the ribs and the heavy bag I had to take kind of easy.

Don't count me out, I'll get back in it.

8 miles this morning. This first mile was at 9:13.  The ribs were stretching out and it hurt to run any faster.  By mile 3 I was running a 8 minute mile.  I got it down to a 7 1/2 minute mile and the last mile sub 7 with the last 1/4 sub 6.  Not impressive by any means, but the fastest sense the rib accident.

The breathing seems a little easier, but the first few are always painful.  I just don't want to push too much.  I need to heal right and not make it any worse.

Bumped up to 9 miles this morning.  Not very much fun running in the wind and with cracked ribs.  I was hoping I would feel a little better today, with not having ran Sunday.  I didn't, it felt the same.  It's been one day shy of a week sense I hurt my ribs and they still feel the same, which says to me it's probably more then bruised ribs.

Anyway, I'll keep trotting along at 10 minutes a mile.  Did some push ups (they hurt), no sit ups! Hit the heavy bag and pushed some weights.

I'll be in SLC training with my department the rest of the week.  I probably won't be back in Bullfrog or comment until Tuesday the 17th.

9 miles to end the week. To bad I skipped a day this week. Now I can't ramp up to 10 a day next week. I'd better stay at 9 miles a day for one more complete week. I hate set backs.

On a better note. The ribs felt pretty good today. They are still tendor, but they didn't effect my push ups, runnings, weigts or heavy bag session. I'm still hesitante to do sit ups.

I think I'll bump up the speed a little next week. Breathing and pain doesn't seem to be an issue anymore. I think I'm healing. It well probably be a few more weeks before I'm completely healed, but at least I getting back after it again.

My ribs are feeling great.  No pain during running, weights, heavy bag and I even did a few sits ups without much pain.  I think I'll give it another week before I start the sit ups.

I was walking around at work yesterday and stepped funny, stretching my achilles tendon a little weird.  It's sore, but didn't hurt  or effect my 9 mile run this morning.  If it's not one thing it's the other with me.  I've never had this many injuries in such a short time frame.  I must be getting older or something.

9 miles in Antimony, UT this morning. Spent the weekend at the in-laws. What a beautiful run. It was dang cold and the elevation about twice of what I'm used to, but the scenary was awesome. I ran into a bunch of deer, ducks, a red fox and peace and quite. A nice run and a good week and every day running!!

10 miles.  I'm pleased with my 60 mile week.  The body feels good.  No problems with the ribs and the achilles (or however you spell it) is feeling a lot better.  I did a little speed this week, but not much.  I was a little hesitante with having taken off a little time for the ribs.  I didn't want to do too much too soon.  I've been there before and it always gets me injured.  I think that's why I hurt my achilles.  I went from not running much in two weeks to back where I was before the injury and that in turn gave me another injury.  I hate how that works, but I know better.

I'm excited for next week.  I'm going to officially start the speed and tempo runs, baby steps!!  It's going to be a little touch with Easter weekend.  It's a busy time for me at work, but I'll just have to get up early.

Did the push and sit ups as well.  Did the weights, ( the biceps and triceps are getting bigger!)  Finished it off with the heavy bag.

10 miles this morning with a little speed. I'm starting my speed and tempo this week. I did only 1 mile at speed and 1 mile at marathon pace. Nothing too crazy, a nice good run. I felt good at the end and could have easily pushed the pace further, but I don't want to injure myself. I'll ramp up little by little. Did some push, and sit ups as well and hit the heavy bag for awhile in additon to the weights.

Sorry to hear you didn't make lottery. Aaron Metler is the guy I deal with the most regarding city races. Steve Hooper might have some contacts. Have you ever run Top of Utah? I know Logan is kind of out of the way, but I've heard they put on a pretty good fall marathon.

I registered for the Top Of Utah Marathon!!  I'm pretty excited for it.  I've never ran it.  This is going to give me something to focus on now for the rest of my training.  I hear it's a fast course, but looking at times, it looks like it's about 4 to 5 minutes slower then the St. George?

Does that sound about right?  Does anyone have any idea?

The plan was originally to do two workouts a day after I hit 10 miles. I was planning on running 10 in the mornings and then eventually 5 in the afternoons four days a week 10 on Fridays and long runs on Saturdays.

I don't know now. I ran 13 miles three days this week so far all in the morning and I'm feeling pretty good, so maybe I'll just get-er-done in the mornings and not worry about afternoon runs.

It seems it would be more time consuming to have to find time for two runs a day, change twice, shower twice, stretch twice, you know what I mean?

I'll stay as is for now unless the body starts getting tired.

3 miles of warm up at 7:19 per mile followed by 5 miles of tempo at 6:18 per mile.  Two cool down miles first at 7:19, last at 6:58, I'll count it as a tempo mile.

A good run this morning.  Body stills feels pretty good after four consecutive mornings of 13 miles.  I'm on track to run 78 miles this week, which is going to be an all time high for me by 6 miles!!

The body feels pretty good. Every now and again my knee hurts for a bit, my achilles or hip, but nothing serious.  I think I'm on track to keep bumping up the miles and speed.

I'm looking forward to not running tomorrow.

Went boating with my family yesterday afternoon and spent the night on the lake.  We had a good time camping, skiing and wake boarding.  It was 2pm before I got to my run today.  I'll tell you what, the legs were feeling the skiing from yesterday and today.  They felt heavy and tired.

It was a speed day, it was all I could do to not quit.  I keep telling myself I could do it and I was right, I could.

Speed as follows.

mile 1 @ 5:39

mile 2 @ 5:36

mile 3 @ 5:33

mile 4 @ 5:30

mile 5 @ 5:27

mile 6  @ 5:24 pace for the first half and 6:00 pace for the last half.

Nice job with the miles. Your making me super jealous with all this lake talk. Your right after a day of skiing you hurt in places you don't even know you have. You almost need a recovery day before running again.

I was pretty tired after my late run yesterday.  I found out after my run that the carpet layer was coming early this morning, so me and my wife had to move everything out of the house.

Man was  I tired when I started my run this morning.  I should have eaten something.  I've never been so hungry on a run before in my life.  I was shaking, felt weak all I could think about was eating.

I managed to get in 14 this morning.

83 miles this week.  A life time high in one week for myself.  The body was tired, but no signs of injury.  I need to stick with the plan and bump up the miles just a bit more and work on that speed, which I hate, because it hurts soooo much!!

I don't know how you 100 plus miles a week guys do it every week.  It's all I can do to put one foot in front of the other sometimes.

Nothing too exciting.  The lizards are in every bush out here.  They take off just as I get to them everytime, making my heart skip a beat.  I keep thinking they are rattle snakes.  One has to be careful not to step on those out here as well.  They are always out warming themselves on the road.

A very warm day.  The start wasn't to good.  There was a nearby forest fire, so the air was full of smoke the whole race.

I feel I ran well.  When it was all said and done, I wished I would have pushed the last couple of miles a little more.

It was a PR for me by about a minute and I did end up beating some people that usually beat me.  I also took 3rd in my age group, so you can't argue with that.

Man am I sore today, which means I probably worked hard.  The race went well and I felt well, just a little hard to hold the pace the last few miles.  Here's the break down.

Mile 1 flat @ 5:53

Mile 2 flat @ 5:57

Mile 3 @ 5:21

Mile 4 @ 5:17 (fastest mile of the year for me)

Mile 5 @ 5:35

Mile 6 @ 5:25

Mile 7 @ 5:50

Mile 8 @ 5:59

Mile 9 starting to feel tired from maybe having pushed the earlier miles too much (6:17)

Mile 10 @ 6:23 ( still tired)

Mile 11 @ 6:08 (feeling better)

Mile 12 @ 6:27 ( some up hill, mind telling me to slow down, struggling to stay the pace)

Mile 13 @ 5:56 ( I realize if I want to PR, I need to run the last 1.1 at a sub 6 minute mile, so I do)

Last .1 @ 5:12 in 24 seconds.

A good race.  I've got two months before my marathon in Logan and lots of work to do.  I'll be ramping up the distance some, speed and tempo.  I'm happy with the results, but not satisfied.

The race was actually on Saturday not Friday, but I'm too tired to change it.

I hate being interupted during a run.

There are some good runs and some bad runs.  Today was a bad run.  I've been taking it easy all week to give myself time to heal from the 1/2 marathon.  Today I finally decide it's time to do a little tempo work.  Man was it ever work.  I've been running all week at 7:08 per mile without too much pain.  Today I bumped it to 6:00 minute miles for 3.5 miles and man did I ever hurt!!

From the first 1/4 mile in on my tempo I felt like I was running the last 2 miles of a marathon.  I eventually had to slow it down.  My legs are heavy, they hurt.  They feel like  the morning after  a marathon.  I  thought I had worked all the lactic acid out.

I think my legs are still a little broken down from the half.  That down hill really must have took a number on them.  My hip even started hurting a little.

As much as I don't like to, I think I'll have to resist the desire to do speed and tempo for another week.

14 easy miles.  Legs felt a littel better today than yesterday, but still heavy and sore. I hate recoverying.

I felt better towards the end.  I'm going to lay low this week and not do any speed or tempo.  It's killing me not to because I not it's going to effect me in Logan.  I better let my body heal properly or I won't be running it at all.

I'm scheduled to put in 86 miles this week, a new career high for myself.  I'll see how the body responds.  I think I should be ok on the miles. I just need to be careful not to push it too much.

Maybe a few easier days might help, what date is your marathon ?

From Cheston on Thu, Jul 30, 2009 at 12:20:09 from 165.247.0.4

September 18th. I have been running easy days, I'm not doing any speed or tempo.

With the tapper down I did for the 1/2 marathon and the last couple of easy weeks, I already feel like I'm way behind. It's frustrating as I'm sure you know.

I'll finish out this week with 86 miles and next week I'm going to be in Hawaii with my wife to celebrate our 11th year of marraige. I'm planning on running 15 miles next Moday and then just 5 miles a day for the rest of the week. Hopefully that will be the rest I need.

I iced the crap out of my legs today and they felt a little better on Thursdays run.

I'm starting to feel better with every run. It's just a slow process.

Another easy 14 miles this morning.  Cloud coverage again, nice.  The legs felt a little better from yesterday.  I was actually running a comfortable pace without any pain.

I have to slow it down on the down hill, that's when I can feel it.

10 miles this morning.   I actually felt pretty dang good.  It felt like the way a run should feel.  My legs were light and didn't hurt.  I sped up some on the down hills and flats and didn't feel any pain.  I finished strong and felt great.

Hopefully a sign of things to come.  I getting excited again about running.  I've got a 20 miler tomorrow that I'm not very excited about.

20 miles at 5am.  Glad to be done for the week.  A new weeks high of miles for myself at 86 miles for the week.

The week started off bad, but I gradually felt better as the workouts went on .  The last couple of days and today especially, I felt great.  I didn't seem to feel the weeks miles and finished strong and fairly fast.

I'm going to scale it back a bit for next week.  I'll be in Hawaii with the misses and I think the body could do with a few less miles while I'm there.  I'll hit it hard when I get back and should be ready to resume the speed and tempo.

Last run in Hawaii!!!  I skipped a few runs, but I had a bad case of Hawaii, what can I say.  What a beautiful and wonderful place.  Running at sea level is easy!!!  I ran with the misses all week and took it easy.  I really enjoyed running along the beach and jungle trails.

I should be ready to go next week.

15  miles this evening.  Just got home from Hawaii. Jet lag, a weeks worth of loose liven, self glutteny at sea level made for a slow, sluggish run.  I made it, nothing to talk about.

Time to get back in the grove, I don't know if I have enough time to get back what I lost before I have to start my tapper again.  I'll give it a shot.

15 miles at 6:00 am.  A pretty good run.  I haven't felt this good for about a month.  It was nice to see that I've still got some gas in the tank and haven't lost too much speed, with about a month of not doing any.

3 mile warm up followed by speed mile repeats.  First mile at 5:53, nothing too exciting, but it felt easy and I was playing it safe. 2nd speed mile at 5:47, starting to open up a little.  3rd speed mile at 5:36, feeling pretty dang good, very surprised.  4th speed mile at 5:37.

Did a few recover miles and finished the workout with 2 miles at tempo speed, first mile at 6:10 and last mile at 5:34, 2.12 miles for a average speed of 5:49 for the last 2.12.

Very happy with the results.  I'll keep on running and see where I can get in 6 weeks, granted 3 weeks of that is going to be tapper down.  I got back a little of the mojo today anyway.

No pain I thinks the legs are healed.

15 miles new pair of Vomeros.  I was in St. George and was going to purchase my favorite running shoe, the Nimbus, but when I got to Steve's store it was cleared out, empty.  Does anyone know where he moved it to.  I had to settle for Nike Vomero at Rebel Sports.

Nice workout, one thing i am quite certain of is that "rest" is underated. All the running just tears the body down and the easy days allow it rebuild a little overtime but when the body really gets a break it loves it. Especially with all of your training you deserved a break and i think that you will find that you will come back even stronger. Good luck.

I like what you read about the average male being capable of a 2:40 marathon.

Did it say that this average male has to be willing to work his butt off training too?

about 12 miles into the run I was daydreaming and looked down to see a rattle snake just a bit bigger then a pencil.  In mid stride I was just able to miss the little guy.

I hear the baby rattle snakes are worse then the adult ones.  I was nervus the rest of my run and kept thinking every tig on the road was a snake.  I just glad to be alive to run other run.

I think he may have blogged me once about Logan already.

Thanks man. I'm hoping for a PR. I'm not sure by how much with the course being slower then St. George.

I'm going to start out running a 6:18 which is my current PR pace and then push the last half.

I don't want to start out too fast and not be able to PR. I've made that mistake before.

I was planning on running a 5:50 pace in St. George, but I did get in as you know. Logan is supposed to be slower, so I'll slow the pace some and hopefully still PR.

We'll see what happens. I'm getting excited.

Warm up followed by a 6 mile tempo.  Very happy with the results.  Pushing a hill the first couple, finished with an average time  of 5:55 per mile.

The last three I really wanted to get my pace under a 6 minute time, so I ran a 5:53, 5:58 and a 5:14.

The last mile a truck pulled along side of me and said, " Is someone in trouble" no I responded, "then why are you running so fast".

"How old are you, and do you have a girlfriend"?  I responded by saying I am 33 and am married.  The girl in the passengers side said, "but do you have a girlfriend".

I couldn't remember Bill's phone number to save my life.  Sorry Bill, she looked like she was looking for love.

As they left he said "Dude your hauling A_ _ !!,"  "Keep it up".

It's little experience like that, that make one feel better about their performance.  I believe I've got my speed back and confidence.  I'm getting exited for Logan.

I realize that TOU is about 4:30 minutes slower then SGM, but I've trained harder, so I really hope I get a new PR.

I know what you mean. Good luck at the SGM. I really wish I could have drawn out on the lottery. I really think I would have knocked off some serious minutes off my current PR there. But, one never knows.

Nice start.  Good weather and temperature thoughout.

At about 9 miles I figured out that I wasn't running the St. George Marathon and wasn't going to be able to PR. I backed off, which was probably a good thing.

I finished well and was kind of bumped about not PRing, but I guess the only way to judge how I did is by looking at overall place (21) and division place (5th).

The last 5 miles I had to back off about 30 to 45 seconds a mile.  I didn't have a lot left. I did finish the last half mile at a sub 6:00 pace and sprinted past at what I thought was a professional marathoner.  He was black, skinny and started with the leed pack.  I'm guessing he was hurt and that's the only reason I past him, but it's still my claim to fame.

I got a nice little award for my divison place and am glad to be done.

I'm happy.  I did decide that I don't need to run 15 miles a day anymore.  I run just as fast or faster with running 10 miles a day.

I felt the race was just a bit long.  My GPS said it was about 1 tenth of a mile long.

I'll back off a lot for the fall and winter and work more on weights and bike.

I finished off with two miles on the treadmill. 8 minute miles. It didn't feel too painful. The calves started stiffening up towards the end.

Felt twice as good as I did yesterday during my workout. Calves not nearly as sore today.

Did 20 minutes on the eliptical and finished with 3 miles on the treadmill.

Department physical fitness test today.  As always, I kicked butt.  Lapped everyone there, most twice, some three times.

Ran 8:44 for the mile and a half.  Not bad for a 70 mph head wind.

5 miles. Weights, push and sit ups, heavy bag.

I'm excited for everyone running the St. George marathon tomorrow.  I can't express how much I wish I was there as well.

Not drawing out on the lottery this year has really bumbed me out.  I don't know if I'll ever run as many miles per week or train as hard as I did this year again.  To not be able to test myself on a PR marathon, when I trained so hard really upsets me.

I know those who actually got into St. George don't really care, but I feel like I missed an oppertunity this year.  I don't think I'm going to run as hard as I did this year.  It took a lot out of me.

I almost considered running bantom, just prove to myself it was going to be a PR.

Anyway, I'd like to  horse whip a St. George marathon official or two, but I guess thats water under the bridge.

I'll be ok.  I'm just venting.

Good luck everyone tomorrow.  Enjoy the race.

I tried to imagine myself running the St. George Marathon this morning on my five mile run.  Although fun, it didn't feel like the real thing.

Man, I hope I get in next year.

Nice easy run. Fist 4 at 7:30 minute miles last mile at 6:58. Felt really easy. Didn't feel like pushing too much.   It's fall.  It's time to step back a little.  If I push too hard durning the Fall and Winter months, I'm not going to feel like pushing when I should be pushing.

Did push and sit ups, weights, and hit the heavy bag around.

4 miles at 7:30 mpm, last mile at 5:50.

Felt pretty easy and relaxed.  This 5 mile a day stuff feels too easy.  It's hard going from 15 miles a day to 5.

My body does need the rest and I could use some time off from long running to get excited about it again.

5 miles this morning. 4 at 7:30 mpm, last mile at 6:30. I went to run on MY treadmill this morning and can you believe it, someone was running on it!!  I had to do my weight, heavy bag, push and sit ups first.

My arms were really tired and sore this morning.

Finished the workout on the treadmill.

Slacked off for a few days. I went wake boarding on Monday for awhile. The water was 65 degrees. Probably the last ride of the season. I'm still a little sore. I was boarding for almost an hour straight.

I was out of town for a couple of days and didn't run. I got the chance, I just decided not to.

5 miles today.  Pretty easy and fast.  Hit the heavy bag, push and sit ups and weights.

Long day. I was working the hunt and started early and didn't get off the mnt until late.

I didn't get done with my workout until after 10 pm.  Luckily my wife got my lazy butt going.

3 miles at 7:30, 1 mile at 6:58 and the last mile at 5:45.

Push and sit ups, weights, and hit the heavy bag.

Felt pretty good.  Man are my arms tired from the strenght training.

A good little bit of speed to start off the morning.  I didn't feel like I was pushing all too much.  I'm not really going to bump up for awhile, but a mile of speed every week isn't going to hurt me.

Did some push and sit ups after the run, followed by weights and hitting the heavy bag.

This workout really tired me out today.  I really worked the weights and while hitting the heavy bag, I hit the bottom of the bag as hard as I could with a spinning back fist and really hurt my wrist.  I iced it up all evening and it feels and looks a lot better.

5 easy miles. Push and sit ups. Weights and heavy bag. Kind of a hard and emtional day for the family.  The family dog of 4 years woke up this morning and couldn't move its back end.  I called the vet and it was decided the best thing to do would be to put it down, of which I did.

The kids understood why and felt like it was the best thing to do.  Puff was a good dog and really good with the kids, very loyal.  It was hard, but nice to see the kids so understanding about he situation.

Brothers got a little too much holiday cheer around the mid section. 5 mile run at 7:30 per mile. Push and sit ups, weights, and heavy bag.

I need to develope some kind of a training goal for 2010.  I'll try getting into the St. Geogre marathon again, but as I've learned, don't get your hopes up.

I'd like to mix it up.  15 miles a day last summer was a bummer and I don't know that it got me anywhere.  A 100 mile bike ride (race) sounds fun.
