Wow, I can't believe my last blog was last October!!  Sorry I haven't  been keeping up with this.  I'm still alive.  And no, Bill, I didn't fall off the boat.  Here's my excuse.  I've been doing tons of training (with state parks) sense I got here.  I just got back from Charleston, S.C.  I was doing some training with the United States Coast Guard at their Academy.  I've pretty much been instructing, or training sense I got here.

Me and the misses are still having fun here at Bullfrog.  We haven't seen each other all that much lately, but I think I'll be around a little more now that I'm all trained up on boats.

I have been exercising.  I've been running and biking all winter and spring.  I've signed up for the Utah half triathlon this August 9th and that has been my main focus on training.  I'm really excited for it, something new.  Me and my wife also signed up for the St. George Marathon.  I think I'll run it with her this year if we make the lottery.  I haven't ran with her at her pace for years, it should be fun.

I won't even try to catch up on my blog with all my past miles.  In my training right now, I'm up to 8 mile runs 3x per week, 21 mile bike rides 3x per week and 3 to 4 40min swims per week.  I don't know much about triathlon training, but I'm learning.  I've found that the weight doesn't come off as fast doing this kind of training.  I'm building more muscle.

I'll try and stay a little more current on my blog.

The hills out here really stink.  It's really hard to get a sense of where I'm at for speed in my training.  I don't if there's one good section in the road where I could accurately judge a mile.  It makes for some good hill training.

I haven't been focusing on speed for awhile now.  After reading a few of the blogs for the first time sense December 2007, I really felt the need for some speed.

I couldn't judge my uphill very well, but there were a few sections in the road where it was flat with some down hill.  I pulled out a 6:43 on mile 3 and a 5:47 on mile 8.  I haven't ran that fast in a long time.

Felt pretty good, I did a total of 8 miles.  Oh yes, the dog is still running with me.

25 miles on bike today.  Longest distance ever on bike!!!  I have a long way to go.

I invested in some real bike shorts with the pad. It really makes a difference.  I can go a lot longer in the saddle without hurting.  I also bought some gloves with tons of gel.  They seem to be keeping my hands from falling alseep.  Different sports bring different problems I'm finding out.

I was at Utah Lake in Provo on Wednesday and Thursday at a Search and Rescue/ Navigation Class.  I think I like Lake Powell better then Utah Lake.  The water reminded me of Chocolate milk (dirty and shallow).  There were 3 foot waves both day and it snowed the whole time.  I was on the lake till 1:00 am Friday morning.  I felt like a crap fisherman off "Deadly Catch".

25 miles on the bike this morning.  Wow, what  a strong head wind.  I averaged 11mph for the first 12.5 and averaged in the high 20's on the way back.  I love a good tail wind.  I hit the 47 mph mark on the way back.  It got a little scary and I had to slow down.  Dang road crew crack sealed the road the last few miles, which makes for some bumps.

8 miles this morning.  1st miles as always straight up hill at about a 6% grade or more.  I hate this mile.  Next 3 slightly down, pretty good pace.  Turned around and ran 3 miles up hill.  Last mile I spotted a runner about 400 yards ahead of me.  I don't see runners out here very often.  Before I spotted the runner I was planning on running the last mile comfortable.  Of coarse I couldn't contain myself and sped up to a 5:30 mile for the last mile.  I had to show the other runner out there who's course he or she was on.  I passed the runner like he or she was standing still.  I noticed it was a  female.  I don't care, I'll take the victory.  She was wearing a head set and about jumped out of her shorts when I passed her, "Pay Attention!".

Anyway, a pretty good run.  Looking forward to an easy 20 mile bike ride tomorrow, hopefully with no wind.  I'm going to go spend the day out on the lake checking fishing licenses and doing vessel inspections.  Boaters beware!!

8 miles this morning.  Weather was perfect.  I pushed a few miles.  I kept getting passed by cars going up and down this dirt road, heading in and out of a camping area.  When ever a car is along side of me, I like to speed up to make everyone think I'm faster then I really am.  Who can say they don't do that?  I do it everyday.  Is that wrong of me?  I think not.  Anyway, the cars never really stopped, so I just kept pushing the pace.

20 mile bike ride this morning.  A little chilly and windy.  With only about 200 yards to go, I got another flat, so I walked home and changed the flat there.  It was another goat head sticker!!!  I'm thinking about putting slime in my tubes.  I'm not sure if they make a road bike puncture proof tube or not?  I know they make some thicker tires, but that would take away from my speed.  Maybe my tires are starting to get too thin.  I never had flats until about a month ago.  I only have 1100 miles on my tires.  I was told that there good for around 2000 and I've even rotated them.  I don't know, live and learn I guess.  Anyway, a good bike ride.

I get the weekend off!! My family is all coming down.  There making some changes in the Branch Presidency and I'm the poor soul who was asked to be president.  I'm not very excited about it.  I hope the branch doesn't burn under my watch.

There were 3 new fishing licenses in the jacket, so I'll be able to return it to it's owner.

45 mile bike ride, longest distance up till this point.  It was windy when I left the door this morning.  I thought it would be good training to push some of those hills in the wind, man was I right.  I don't think I've ever been in wind that strong in my life.  I was doing 12 1/2 minute miles for most of the ride, on a bike!!

The wind was so bad at some points that it knocked me over on the ground, twice!!  I had to get off and walk at on point, because it was too dangerous to ride.  When I was walking, the wind was blowing me across the road.  I was hanging on to my bike with two hands and my bike was blowing like a kite in the wind above my head.  It took all I had to hold on to it and to keep my footing.

The road narrows in some places where the cliffs/walls are on both sides of the road.  At these points, the wind would pick up quarter sized rocks and blast them through the wind tunnels at what seemed 100 miles per hour.  The rocks cut my arms and legs, leaving them etched and looking pretty rough.  I said a little humble prayer at one point that I would make it home ok.

On the way back I had the wind on my back.  I had to stay on the brakes most of the way, to keep from going too fast and out of control.

Needless to say a pretty crazy bike ride.  I'm glad to be alive and glad to have done the ride.  I hope I don't experience wind like that again.

So is that 90mpw short term goal with or without bike mileage? Great training and way to mix it up.

From Cheston on Tue, May 27, 2008 at 09:53:30

I probably need to redo my short term goal.

90 mpw running was a goal for a while ago when I was just straight running. I'm mixing things up now and doing some triathlon training.

I run only three times per week I'm at 9 miles 3x per week right now and any where from 25 to 45 miles 3x a week on the bike. I also try to get in at least 3 swims per week.

Thanks for asking.

From Adam RW on Tue, May 27, 2008 at 10:21:49

The dedication of a triathlete is always amazing to me. But it sounds like you do it in a well balanced way. Any chance of working up to an Ironman? That had been a goal of mine for the last 13-yrs but since I've yet to switch over to triathlons I'm going to stick with my sub-2:30 marathon goal for now. Good luck to you.

From Cheston on Thu, May 29, 2008 at 22:49:38

Thanks. I'd like to do a full Ironman.

Initially I was planning on training for a full Ironman, but me wife talked me into working my way up. She runs marathons and needs time to train as well and with 3 kids and work, we kind of have to share time so we each have enough time to train.

Sorry I missed you while you were in the "big city". That is great that you and your wife split the training that way, is she also on the blog? Good luck at working up to that Ironman. I'm sure I will look at it again. But right now I'm time and money limited to work on triathlons at the level I would like to compete at.

p.s. I do have a confession, I first came to your blog because you were topping the mileage board and the whole discussion on biking vs. running mileage came up (http://fastrunningblog.com/forum/index.php/topic,348.0.html). But I'm glad I did and I wish you the best success in both your pursuit of a 2:29 marathon and an Ironman...

From Cheston on Sun, Jun 01, 2008 at 02:02:34

No, my wifes not on the blog. I don't know if I'll ever reach the 2:29 marathon goal, I haven't been training for it, so I doubt I ever well, but I'm having fun tri training right now.

Biking is by no means as hard as running. I can do a 45 miler on a bike and be fresh and ready to go the next day. A 45 mile bike ride feels like a 10 mile run to my body.

Good luck with your training.

From Adam RW on Sun, Jun 01, 2008 at 09:48:44

Never count out the 2:29. The tri training may help strengthen muscles and take you to a new level. I ran in high school and college and even after all that training only managed 2:45-55 in the marathon for the first 5 years out of college. However, after a couple years of consistent higher mileage training I've even started to beat my college PRs and break 2:40 and for the first time can truly see a 2:29. I hope that your obvious dedication to training will also pay off.

Didn't finish last week out very strong.  Disneyland is my excuse.  I took a few days off to be with my kids.  Now I have to live with my shame.

Picked my bike up at the shop on the way home.  I had a tune up done on it along with some new tires.  She's purring like a kitten.

Did a 55 mile bike ride in the wind this morning!! That's right 55 miles!! I know that's nothing for some, but it's my longest ride to date.  Felt pretty good, hated the wind.

9 mile run this morning. Felt pretty good.   My legs didn't know that I had biked 55 miles the day before.

Did a 40 minute swim after the run.  The wind had picked up and the water was pretty choppy.  My legs definitely could tell I had biked  55 miles and had just ran 9 miles, because they kept cramping up on me.  I swim close to the shore, in case I have problems and to avoid being hit by a boat.

I swam to shore a couple times during the swim and had to work out some nasty cramps.  All in all a good work out.

I came across a quarter on my run.  I just stepped on it and kept running.  Sorry Bill!!  It may still be there tomorrow if your interested?

Went for a 41 minute swim today.  The water is finally starting to warm up.  At the beginning of the week,  I was shivering after my swims.  Now I'm just a little chilly.

Great job. Are you training for a triathlon? One thing has been bugging me though. Some people check the mileage board a lot and I am one of them. And I don't think that it is fair that you keep getting top of the mileage board with your biking. Would you mind changing your blog format to one that has a cross training section? I really admire your training and I know that mileage doesn't mean everything, but I am crazy and I know some other people are like me. Again, I mean no offense and feel free to keep it this way if you like it. But it might help you track your training better as well.

From Wildbull on Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 13:20:52

Why are people so concerned about your miles? First pride comes before the fall. blog was made to track your goals and encourage others with simular intrests. Cheston keep up the great training. I think your an awesome athlete.

What can I say I'm a competitor. If this is the only way I can win on the mileage board, then maybe I had better keep it as is.

To be honest I've never even checked the mileage board. I'm not concerned with it. I rarely look at the other blogs.

I'm not a smart man. I wouldn't have any idea how to change the format. Sorry Haynes. I know your not trying to pick a fight. But thanks for the info anyway.

From Chad on Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 17:28:33

Cheston--

If you're not concerned with the mileage board and rarely look at other blogs then why not consider taking a moment to change your logging template to accommodate those who are active on the blog and do check the mileage board?

Here's how to change your template:

1) Log into the blog.

2) Click on "Change Logging Template" from the list of menu items in the pink box on the left hand side of the page.

3) Select "Jack Daniels Running Formula with cross training" and click "Make Active."

You will then have the option to list running miles and cross training (ie cycling) miles.

happy training!

From josse on Wed, Jun 18, 2008 at 13:13:51

Haynes this is the solution I came up with because people seem to have a problem with this. Write you name on a piece of paper and tape it to the top of your computer and you will always be on top of the mileage board.

Cheston-I use biking when I am injured and put them in crosstraining miles which get added into mileage. What I do to convert this to running miles is take my time and do 10 mins. per mile.

But honostly it doesn't matter, and yes I like to see my name high on the list as well. But if someone wants to keep track of all the mileage they do whether it is biking or running don't let it get to you. You know you have ran more.

From Chad on Wed, Jun 18, 2008 at 13:38:57

Josse--

What a practical solution! I like it.

The thing I don't get about this conversation is how it has anything to do with not respecting someone's miles.

I don't think anyone would say that a person shouldn't track all of their miles, whether it's biking, swimming, running or whatever. It's just a matter of putting the miles into the right bucket and the blog allows you that option.

The blog community works best when folks use the tools available in a way that maximizes their own use and allows the greatest benefit to others. For example, there may be other folks on the blog that are cycling big miles and want to see if others are doing the same. They would miss Cheston's entries because those miles are logged as running miles.

All I'm saying is make the best use of what is available and it will have the effect of improving everyone's experience.

Personally, I don't care much about where I am on the mileage board (I can predict where I am at without even looking at it), but I know many who do care about it (ie Haynes) and I see their point.

Haynes went out of his way to be exceptionally polite in his request and was told to pound sand. I just don't get that! If I were driving down a road making nothing but left hand turns for the last hour and someone told me my right hand blinker was flashing the whole time and confusing the other drivers, I would appreciate the correction.

No one means any offense and in no way is anyone trying to undermine the legitimacy of someone else's training. (I just got beat soundly by a triathlete in a 10k this weekend and have much respect for multisport athletes). We're talking about a simple courtesy, aren't we?

From Adam RW on Wed, Jun 18, 2008 at 14:08:17

I have to agree with Chad here. The point is not to offend. We just want some consistency for the people who do care about these things. Enough people have voiced that they are competitive about the mileage board and do use this as a form of motivation (see related discussions on the discussion board). I don’t change my mileage to affect my standing on the board but I do check where I stack up against those closest in my ability for the week. For the people that do check the mileage board, I would say the vast majority of the 500 plus people on this blog only log their running miles. Right now Cheston is the only person (I know of) on the first page of the mileage board logging his biking miles = to his running miles. Though total mileage is fun, I think that for the purposes of the mileage board on this running blog the easiest is to do what other people in Cheston’s shoes are doing. That is to either log 3 miles biked = 1 mile on your entry or even better use Josse’s 10 min / mile conversion. That way you don’t have to even change your template, you just change the way you enter your miles. This is about as “fair” as I think we can make things for those who want to log their biking miles vs running miles only.

From wildbull on Wed, Jun 18, 2008 at 14:08:50

Cheston, Do what you like. it is your Blog! your record! May the force be with you! in the spirit of competition your not playing fair! By the way, just 2 more comments will put this discussion on the Hot Discussions board, and then it will really get some attention.

From Kim on Wed, Jun 18, 2008 at 14:52:44

I'm not quite sure if I want to get in on this discussion or not, but I have something to say from both sides of the issue.

1. I believe this blog started as a way for runners to log their miles and improve their performance in running. So in that regard I assume the cross- training miles should probably be calculated the same way for all people.

I for one don't really care what the mileage board says for anyone but myself. I like to look and see how many miles I ran in a week, a month and a year. I am excited to know for my own benefit.

2. I sometimes wonder if the reason we see so many injured people on this blog is because they are too caught up in "keeping up with the Jones's". Sasha's idea in this blog was to "run, blog, improve, repeat".

With both of those opinions voiced, I hope I don't regret joining in on this discussion. 1., because of the emails it is likely to generate, and 2. one of the things I love about this blog is the goodness and niceness that comes with it. I hate to see anyone being attacked in a "friendly" place. There have been at least two people attacked on this thread alone.

From Katie on Wed, Jun 18, 2008 at 14:53:17

Everyone knows I'm the Mileage Queen no matter how many miles Cheston bikes! ; )

The mileage board motivates me. There aren't runners around here doing my kind of mileage so I look to this to keep me heading in the right direction. Sure, it seems unfair when I get bumped by a biker, but it sure makes for a HOT discussion, doesn't it?

Back to painting the kitchen (I think it converts to 4 running miles per hour of painting)

From dave holt on Wed, Jun 18, 2008 at 15:12:01

Chad, thanks for the "word of the day"! I just looked it up - I think it should be a new feature on the blog (and then of course, we will ask Sasha to add a feature board that tracks who has come up with the most "word(s) of the day".

From Adam RW on Wed, Jun 18, 2008 at 15:16:22

Dave, I think if we do that we need to have a conversion factor for Chad. I think 4 Chad words of the day = 1 word of the day :)

From dave holt on Wed, Jun 18, 2008 at 15:18:33

It's all that high and mighty lawyery stuff!

From josse on Wed, Jun 18, 2008 at 17:18:57

Ok Ok people I don't think anyone is trying to offend anyone here. I is just overly ambitius runners who like to see there name on the front page of something (luckily for me I can look at the top runners list for that few!)

This blog motivates me along with all the differant personalities. I love these deep philosophical conversations. I do think out of respect people should either change there logging templet (if you set up the blog you can change the templet), or covert there mileage to running. But then again we all have freedom to do what ever we please. Even if we are doing it out of shear bullheadedness (I am talking about myself of course.)

From Jon on Wed, Jun 18, 2008 at 21:57:57

I'm going to change my template so it records my runs in feet. No, inches!

From Benn on Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 08:57:38

Hey man. As a fellow biker I know that when I first started blogging my miles for biking, I put them in x-training miles, but that wasn't enough as x-training miles still count towards your overall mileage. You do some monster rides which is great ! What i do is convert them by multiplying the total distance by .333333 repeating. I find this gives me an accurate approximate to total distance ran. I am recovering from an achilles issue and its been a long, slow 5 months, I just know that I caused a little turmoil amongst certain runners myself by blogging the mileage.

In the end you can choose to do what you want, but I notice you are blogging your running miles and cycling miles together without modifying the cycling miles. Just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in there that maybe you want to separate the cycling/biking miles. 50-60 mile cycle rides are sweet deals, but not the same as running 50 miles you know? Just dont want you to have skewed results at end of the year.

Ride on man. You watching the Tour this year?

From Benn on Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 09:02:26

Oh two more things I think that Josse converts x-training to like 10 min miles so just divide total minutes by 10 for another mode of conversion.

Also, what type of bike do you ride?

From Guest on Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 11:03:55

Now I understand why some are hesitant to "officially" join the blog. . .

Go Cheston! :)

From ron on Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 11:24:42

I take a gander at the top mileage every now and then. The only problem i have with biking/running 1:1 miles is that it is hard to compare unless you decipher each persons individual blog.

Let's say my goal is 90 miles per week, so I compare myself to those in that range on the board. If two or three of those do 30 miles biking per week and run 60, then it would appear as though I was doing the same although I'm working about 2 hours longer for the same mileage.

I suppose you could just interpret each persons blog individually, but that kind of defeats the purpose of having a board. The problem only increases with months and years as well.

From Cal on Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 11:46:16

The mileage board is interesting, but you have to keep in mind that it doesn't tell the whole story. Not all miles are created equal... (even if they are 'running' miles) You would have to dig deeper into any particular persons training logs to find out how their workouts compare to yours anyway.

The only prize for running high mileage is improved fitness.

From Sasha Pachev on Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 14:33:46

Cheston - to make the study of your blog more meaningful, you should follow Chad's instructions, and then give yourself a cross-training mile for every 10 minutes of hard biking. Or do the same and put those miles under easy. I do not particularly care if somebody gets displaced from the top of the mileage board because you have too many biking miles logged at face value (I think it is a good motivator for them to put their miles into perspective), but it would make it difficult to figure out what is happening in your training if a large number of biking miles gets counted as running miles.

From Lybi on Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 15:05:08

Congratulations on your longest ride yet, Cheston! That is awesome.

And in other news, you are clearly a scoundrel. You know that it would be simple to change, and that it bugs all these competitive runners that you are blogging bike miles as running miles, and that is why you want to keep doing it. I just think that's funny. It's the diversity of the personalities that makes this blog so great. Runners are stubborn--we have to be to keep at it. Good luck with your training, you scoundrel!

From Sean Sundwall on Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 16:59:51

The thing I have loved about this blog since i joined 9 or so months ago is that there isn't the attitude and flippancy that you find on other blogs like LetsRun. I despise LetsRun.

This is a running blog where we do many things like track running miles, talk about running injuries and discuss other running related topics.

Of course, some of the runners also have other athletic talents and pursuits such as swimming, biking, walking and maybe even archery.

No one of these talents or skills is any more important or better than the other.

That said, this is a running blog. It's not a swimming blog. It's not a triathlete blog and it's not an archery blog. That doesn't mean those things can't be discussed and opined on. That's what the discussion forums are for and I believe there are specific "buckets" of conversations where all of these things can be discussed.

But including mileage in one sport, on a mileage board for another sport is not helpful to anyone. It adds confusion to an otherwise simple menas of personal and group accountability.

I use the mileage board for a couple of reasons:

1--It keeps me accountable to myself and others

2-- It helps provide context to the successes, failures and challenges we each face in our training and competition.

3-- It helps draw some conclusions of various training regimens and philosophies.

For others, it's clearly a competitive thing which is perfectly fine. I don't care about that because I'm never going to be a 100-mile per week guy again, but to some it's important that, in part, is what this blgo is for: to push already realtively gifted athletes to greater heights.

When people start putting in mileage that isn't specific to the sport being tracked, then it skews that data and doesn't do anything to help anyone.

Cheston, who appears to be a fantastic athlete, has put in 110 miles this week. 100 of that has been on the bike and ten of it running. It seems weird to me that on fastrunningblog.com this would be the case.

Again, I run the mileage I need to run and can run. I have never looked at the mileage board, seen someone ahead of me, and then gone out for another few miles so I could pass them. That would be silly.

But let's keep this specific to running. Doing otherwise dilutes the value of the blog if it reaches a point where we have to wade through a bunch of other stuff to make use or sense of the running stuff.

From bedoukian on Fri, Jun 20, 2008 at 09:36:33

maybe i'll start counting car rides on the mileage board too! The point is: there is no point having a mileage board for running if people put whatever cross training activities they do...personally the mileage board motivates me and i gauge myself by how many miles i've done compared to Haynes. I think walking miles are fine but nothing else. Maybe walking is not ok? What if it's up a mountain and you can't run faster than you walk? Any thoughts?

From josse on Fri, Jun 20, 2008 at 09:39:05

Only if it is a 7% grade and you are carrying a pack with at least 50lbs. in it and going backwards then you can count it on the mileage board.

From Sasha Pachev on Fri, Jun 20, 2008 at 09:42:06

Some people do not count the mileage unless it is slower than 8:00 pace. Others count walking. We do not have strict rules on what counts as mileage. My personal rule is that if you feel you've trained an equivalent of running a mile at 60% or higher of your max HR, it counts as a running mile. But again, if somebody wants to have different rules for their mileage that is fine with me too. I just need to have an idea of what their rules are if they want me to help them with their training.

From Sean Sundwall on Fri, Jun 20, 2008 at 09:50:49

We're making this harder than it has to be. Running is running. It isn't walking. It isn't biking. It isn't swimming. And Al Unser Jr., arguably an athlete, doesn't get to count his Indy 500 miles here as well.

This is a running blog. It's not a blog for all athletes. I don't even think cross training miles should be counted. I do a lot of strengthening exercises and stretching that is every bit as important as the miles I run, but I don't get to count them toward mileage because it's not mileage.

There are a lot of things we runners do to train. Running mileage is one of those measurements. Let's not dilute it by trying to convert mowing the lawn, or lifting weights, or walking or hiking into its "equivilent" running mileage.

From josse on Fri, Jun 20, 2008 at 11:56:22

I think Sean has made the best point here. I have never counted crosstrianing miles as mileage untill I joined the blog and it had a section for my crosstriaing. But I wish it wasn't added into running mileage. I like to see what my exact running miles are without having to go back and minus my crosstraining (but I still like to see what I was doing during an injured time). In fact I don't add them in anymore, but them agian I am not injured.

From Adam RW on Fri, Jun 20, 2008 at 13:05:26

I have to agree that this is a great blog. The fact that this discussion can go on with such well thought out arguments without resorting to name calling etc. is great. I also have to say that Sean’s arguments are solid and I stand behind him fully.

From Benn on Sat, Jun 21, 2008 at 06:48:32

While I agree with Sean, I have to stand by my conversion of biking miles to .33 running miles. As I am still coming back from this achilles issue, I have found that I can seemingly do endless x-training without aggravation. I think that blogging the bike mileage has helped me stay positive as well as given others an idea of what I'm doing and how I'm going about doing it. Had I not been able to blog cycle miles, I probably would have stopped blogging simply from lack of motivation. In addition I believe it's kept me in shape or rather gotten me back into shape. I don't want to make it on the mileage leader board, but I still think that the 1-2 hrs a day I put in are worth a little bit.

Plus, by blogging, it's given Sasha an idea on possible training program that incorporates running/cycling as I come back. So far so good! (crossing my fingers). I think that as long as we're staying active and getting in our workouts we will all unlock a hidden potential. This blog is amazing and I know it's changed my life.

God bless.

Everyone should check out Burt's blog. His blog is set up to track only miles ran. He has been keeping track of his bicycle mileage too in his comments. Whenever he doesn't run, he puts a zero in total distance and logs the miles in his comments. He understands that it is important to show that he is still training, but that running miles are running miles, and cycling miles are not running miles. Burt really is an awesome and amazing guy. Plus, he's really handsome.

I changed my template to the Jack Daniel's. I don't like not being able to see my mileage on the calendar month when I put my biking mileage into trainer 1 or trainer 2. It doesn't show up on my monthly total page. So I'll put it in how I've been doing it until there's a better option.

From Guest on Sun, Jun 22, 2008 at 15:23:49

Trainer 1 and Trainer 2 are for tracking the mileage on your shoes. For the bike mileage use the conversions suggested by Ben. He has the right idea. Divide your final mileage by 3 or your final time by 10 and log the mileage with your running mileage.

From josse on Sun, Jun 22, 2008 at 16:03:12

Or there is a template that tracks running miles, biking miles and swimming miles. Or like mine it had crosstraining miles as well (you could put the biking miles in there and it still adds them all together). Take a look at all of them and see which one would work best for you.

From josse on Sun, Jun 22, 2008 at 16:05:33

Cheston I hope all this has not put a bad taste in your mouth for the blog. You look like a great athlete and I hope you continue to blog and train. Good luck with your half ironman, this is one of my goals someday. I would love to do a full as well.

From Cheston on Sun, Jun 22, 2008 at 16:09:27

That's good advise, thanks. I'd still like to be able to see a total biking mileage somewhere. I'd like to see it on my calendar month.

I know this is a running blog, it's where I started. I've received some good advice over the last few years.

I'd prefer to stay with this blog and not switch to a biking blog. I'm a runner, I'm just trying something different for awhile.

I'm running the St. George marathon with my wife in October. Running is my passion, I'll always be one. I don't like the idea of people trying to force me into using another blog, just because I've decided to bike and swim for awhile.

I guess what I'm asking for is a biking option with this blog. A way of being able to see my total biking mileage and my running mileage. I wouldn't have a problem putting them into the right category then. Until that option is available, I'll have to do what I've been doing.

I don't like divided my biking mileage. I want to see all my biking mileage. I want to be able to keep track of what I'm doing for me and for my training.

If people are confused and need to know in what area of training my mileage falls, read my blog. I always put if it was running or biking miles.

Maybe the high mileage list needs to be updated? It should reflect cross training miles, running, biking swimming etc... That would avoid the confusion many are seeming to have and the jealously that many seem to focus on.

I'm just a humble athlete. I just want to work out and keep a record of what I've done.

Provide the proper tools to do this and there wont be problems in the future.

From Cheston on Sun, Jun 22, 2008 at 16:26:49

I had no idea. It must be the ripped body of mine.

I just looked at the Jack Daniel's cross-training version. I could put my biking miles into the cross-training section, but I would still prefer to be able to log them as biking miles and not just miscellaneous miles.

So basically you are saying you're a jerk. You are a self proclaimed non-contributor to the community (you previously mentioned you don't check other peoples blogs or comment) and despite a huge plea for you to participate in the group that you've decided to join you continue to ignore the requests of those around you. (over 500 other people are true members that oblige by the majority request). I'm confused why someone would join anything just to disrupt it. Many people care about this blog and spend lots of time on it to focus on their training and to help their fellow bloggers. While from your current trend your only focus is to upset people. Way to go dude... I bet you were one of those kids in school that would prefer to get sent to the principal's office just so people would look at you instead of working hard to earn the respect of others...

From Adam RW on Tue, Jul 01, 2008 at 21:52:46

I've thought about it a little (ok a lot) and keep in mind that some of my best friends are jerks. I find it funny that I should care at all but I'm trying to protect the blog. The main thing here is that you've had a lot of people "mad" but also a lot of people take time to give well thought out arguments of why what you are doing is hurting the quality of the features on the blog. The fact that you had one of the hottest topics ever on the blog as far as number of comments goes points to the seriousness with which other runners take this issue...

I have a new flippin' sweet roadie coming my way on Friday. I emptied my checking acct to get it, orig. 1200 but onsale for like 496. Also, what type of gear do you ride in? Right now I do corduroy shorts and a tshirt, but after about 40 miles the chaffing is almost unbearable :(

From Cheston on Fri, Jun 27, 2008 at 14:17:07

Thanks guys. My wife says I still got it, so maybe I'm not that old.

I ride a 2007 Jamis Comet. I bought it off the wife of the owner of Cedar Cycle in Cedar City. It's a $1300 bike, but it had 300 miles on it. I got it for $900. A fairly low end bike as far as price goes.

Yea, the crouch really takes a beating biking. I had to invest in some heavy padded biking shorts. Their spandex shorts with the padding sown right into the crouch.

I also go spandex for the shirt as well. The ladies really dig it!! I'm talking about my wife and 3 daughters. I've also had to invest in some gel padded fingerless gloves. My hands would get numb and the gloves do the trick.

You'll probably have to go to a bike store the get the proper gear.

I have a full body spandex suit for the triathlon. It's good for all three events. I should put it on my blog. I'm sure it would scare off any unwanted traffic.

So here is the "funny" part. You changed your template but still put your bike miles under running instead of crosstraining and this week you didn't put your swimming "miles" under anything? My question is what are you keeping track of anyway?

From Benn on Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 07:45:26

Hey Cheston! Sick miles lately! Nice rides and such. I've been injured about five months now with achilles issues. I was wondering what kind of bike you use, and how long it takes you to bike 30? I know how you feel with comments because I was logging all my miles under the mileage, but didn't have a x-training or triathlon kind of blog. And unfortunately I had already changed my blog so I can't go back and pick the triathlon training one :(. But what I found worked nicely as a gauge for approximate miles run for bike miles was logging them @ 33%.. i.e. 30 mile ride is about 10 mile run. I know its not the same for time: miles ration, but I found for me it's about the same for the effort ratio. What do you think? You think that 3 miles biked = 1 mile run?

Yo Cheston. Just wondering if maybe your PSI Tire pressure is to blame? It seems you get a lot of flats. Just wondering because I have about 350 miles on my bike and no problems in the least. Wondering if maybe you're pumping them a little too taught with air? Because i'm a big rider (6'2 and about 172 lbs)

From Cheston on Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 13:06:35

It could be. I'm new to the sport, so I don't know what I'm doing. The PSI suggests 115-125. I pump them up to about 115 each ride.

I normally don't get flats when my tires are new. It's about at 500 miles. That's when the flats start coming. I'm 5'7" 145, so I don't think it has anything to do with my weight.

What kind of tires do you ride with and at what PSI? I ride with specialized Mondo. I've heard a lot of bad reviews about them. I'm getting ready to switch over to Michelin Ironmans.

From The Howling Commando on Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 13:58:00

I use Kenda K-152s which was what the bike came with. I only use pressure ~ 90 PSI though, which is what it suggests. Maybe since I'm at a lower PSI that leaves me a little slower but less prone to flats? We'll have to see :) What kind of repair kit do you carry with you on your bike? Also, do you wear a jersey? I've been trying to find a reliable dealer for bike jerseys that aren't an arm and a leg

From Cheston on Sat, Jul 26, 2008 at 14:22:33

Thanks man. I'll try backing off on the PSI a little. The repair kit I use is a Wal-mart special. It's kind of like a bicycle leatherman. It was just about everything on it. I think the brand it bell. I also carry three extra tubes, a patch kit and a bicycle pump. It all fits in a zip up pouch and strapes behind the bike seat, another Wal-mart special.

As far as jersey's go, I'm just getting started. I wear padded shorts and then what ever shirt I happened to grab. I do have a full piece spandex triathlon suit I'm going to wear for the triathlon. I pick up all my gear at Benguim Cyclery in Salt Lake City.

30 minute swim.  The water is soooo warm here.  80 plus degrees.  I hear the water at Utah lake is pretty warm as well.  I'm assuming I won't need a wet suit.

An early 5:00 am run this morning. 13 miles.   It was dark, windy, raining and still hot!!!  I got up and looked at the weather and just about went back to bed.  I gave my wife the option of running first but she declined being the birthday girl of 30 and all.

I'm glad I got out.  It ended up being a good run and now I won't feel guilty all day at work today.

Yo Cheston. When's your triathlon? How many laps you do in 45 minutes?

Oh and have you ever done a century (100 mile bike ride)? If so, what was your time and do you have any suggestions for a smooth ride? I am thinking about plotting out a 25 mile loop and having a food/water station and stopping off every lap there for refreshment. What do you think? Any suggestions would be awesome. Many thanks.

Benn

From Cheston on Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 13:16:46

Commando,

I've never done a century. In fact, this is going to be my first triathlon ever. The race is August 9th. Half Triathlon. 1.2 mile swim. 56 bike and 13.1 run.

All of my swim training has been in the lake. I've never even worked out in a pool. I have no idea how far I go in 45 minutes. I hope it's far enough, or I'm going to hate life come race day.

Putting out food every 25 miles sounds like a good idea. I would make sure you had a water bottle carrage on your bike and drank at least every 10 miles. Carrying a couple of gel packs on the bike might not be a bad idea either.

Good luck. What century are you planning on doing?

From The Howling Commando on Fri, Aug 01, 2008 at 07:02:50

Well there aren't that many scheduled century rides around where I live, and as I've never done a bike race I wouldn't want to get upset too much when an 80 year old gramps kicked my butt. I was thinking of using mapmyride.com and coming up with ~25 or 25.1 mile loop and parking my car at start with a cooler of extra bottles and gu and such. As it is I carry 2 x 24 oz bottles on my bike, usually one of gatorade, one of water.

As far as your swimming, I think 45 minutes should be enough since you also run and bike for endurance. I was talking to a lady who just completed a full olympic tri up in Lake Placid, NY and it is one of the hilliest ones out there. She said that as far as biking and swimming, once you have done about 3/4 of the distance in training you are set. Kind of like how they say for a marathon don't really dabble much past 22 or 23. You're ready to slice and dice man. Hopefully I get to see the race report. I'm going away to Canada from Aug. 7 to 14. I will try to check in though.

Keep up the hard training and you will smoke them come race day bud.

Cheers.

Benn Jammin way too Long time.

Thanks man. I don't really even know what to expect as far as time goes. I'm not a swimmer or a biker. I guess I am now anyway.

A very good race in my opinion.  I didn't have much to go on as far as what was good or not.  I raced well and felt good and tired at the end.  It must have been a good race.

The swim started a little late with a 1.2 mile swim.  I started towards the back, because I didn't want to get kicked to death.  I'm not a strong swimmer.  I tbecame apparent when the race started that it didn't matter where one started, you were going to get kicked to death anyway.  People are pretty aggressive in the swim.  People were grabbing my ankles and swimming right over my back.

I finished the swim in 47 minutes I believe, 30th in my age group.

The bike was awesome.  It was fast and pretty flat.  I felt good the entire ride.  I really conserved and ended up finishing the bike in around 2:39 I believe.  Around 20 miles an hour.  I finished the bike 26th in my age group

It was apparent on the run that triathletes are not runners.  Everyone looked dead tired.  I just kind of took it easy for 13.1 miles and averaged 7:45 a mile.  I passed about 100 people on the run.  I finished 4th overall in my age on the run and 10th in my age group overall.

Now that I've done my first triathlon and know what it's like, I think the next can be a lot faster.  I conserved too much througout.  Overall I'm happy.

Next week I'll start getting back into it.  I have the St. George marathon to focus on now.  I'm not too concerned about times on this one.  I'm going to be running with my wife, just for the fun of it.  Running for fun and not hurting?  This is going to be something new to me.

8 miles today.   There have been a lot of runners out here lately.  It's kind of nice to pass them from time to time.  I passed and talked with an older lady today who was out running.

I feel ready for the St. George.  I can't wait to run with my wife.  I'm actually going to enjoy the run this time, instead of being so focused on a time and killing myself to catch it.  I'm sure I'm not done with speed.  I'm already starting to feel the itch.  I may try for another PR within the next couple of year, we'll see.

I've got my department physical fitness test on Monday.  It'll be fun beating those guys.  I'm going to run in a new region this go around.  I'm excited to get some new competition.  It'll be like running a new race.  I may even get smoked.  I love the department run and the timed push ups.  I'm going for 100 in 60 seconds.  I did it this morning, so I should be good.

Good news.  I've lost 6 pounds in the last 4 days.  I've been eating out a lot and have had a lot of soda lately.  I guess I had a lot of crap that needed to come out of the system.  I'm trying to detox the system for the next couple of weeks.

Well, I ran the St. George Marathon with my wife today.  Man the weather was crappy as I'm sure anyone whom ran it would agree.  It was cold.  I was cramped the whole time and never really loosened up.

The rain would not stop and a good head wind at times.  I ran with my wife and I was proud to say that despite the weather she set herself a new PR of 3:51:54!!!  I was glad she didn't run any faster, it wasn't easy for me.

When we got done I was so chaffed from the rain I could barely walk.  I'm going to lose two toe nails.  Other then that, I had fun running with my wife.  The last 3 miles she really picked it up to PR.  I had to push her at the end, but she pulled it off.  There's no way I could have PR'ed in weather like that.

Great job, Cheston. I have a sprint triathlon coming up. Any pointers?

From Burt on Mon, Oct 13, 2008 at 16:46:42

A sprint should be fairly easy to complete. You should focus on the transition from the swim, to the bike, to the run. Practice changing and laying out your gear. Having everthing right where you need it helps tons. Maybe purchase a number belt, so you don't have to worry about pinning it on after the swim. Being fast in the changing area will really save you some time and could mean the difference in placing or not.

If you want to remove it, just edit your post and put the correct miles. Easy enough.

5 miles this morning, finally.  I took a couple of day off, because I felt like it.  No other reason.  I need to come up with some kind of new years resolution.  Some kind of a fitness plan, which usually involves training for some kind of race.

I'll be thinking on it.  I'm half way temped to train hard and see if I can PR in a marathon, or maybe another 1/2 iron or full.  We'll see what happens.

5 mile run this morning.  Picked up the last mile for a sub 6.   Did some push ups and sit ups, hit the bag for awhile.  Felt like I was going to faint when I was done.  I had to lay down for awhile before I could stand up again.

I think I pushed the latter part of the work out just a little too much.  I thought I was going to throw up for a few minutes there.

Everything is good now.
