Ran my usual four miles at a 7:03 pace. Some stuff i have been thinking about lately is i would like to race more than four times a year. I have worked so hard getting to this point in my life i would like to enjoy the fruit of my work. I understand that more training is needed to get better, but i would like to run more than four races a year. The one thing stopping me is my wife, but she has a good point that is just too expensive to run races out of town. I don't know, do any of you have any advice for me or am i just a lost cause? Not much planned for today except my usual, work and rest. Thanks for reading and have a great day!

P.S. Is there anyone out there running the Ogden 1/2 marathon wanting to run it between 1:20 and 1:22? Please let me know, maybe we can run together and help each other out.

Barry, I would like more info from you on the vitamin IV thing. I am willing to try it on Thursday. Give me a call later today if you can.

As for the racing costs. I try to stay with relatives and friends whenever I can to save money so I look for races that make this possible. I let runners stay at my house and they do the same for me.

While they don't seem as fulfilling, local 5ks and 10ks can be fun and inexpensive. And they are great speed workouts. Do it to it!

I'll second Kelsey's post. Whenever I'm in training for a really long race (i.e. 100k+), the training can get to be somewhat monotonous, and I've found that going to 5k's and 10k's can be a lot of fun for not much money. Over this past summer, I went to a 5k almost every weekend and just trained through them. Any given weekend there is likely to be a short race of some sort within and hour's drive, and with maybe a $20 entry fee, it's not prohibitively expensive. Also, the race atmosphere is always fun to be around. I rarely run these all-out, but treat them more as tempo runs, and it's always fun to see the kind of shape you're in as your training progresses.

Barry the local races would give you a chance to race more than 4 times a year. We have the five city 10k races, plus the ISU Wellness Center does two or 3 races. Of course, there's the Pocatello Marathon and now the new Just Be CUZ Half Marathon.

But are you only talking about wanting to race Half Marathon's? Teton Dam HM is in Rexburg and you could exactly drive up the morning of and do this one. Just have someone pickup your bib and chip. I've thought about doing the Marathon there and doing the same thing this year.

Idaho Falls also has races you could drive up to the day of the race. I've done this a couple of times.

Thanks for the advice that really means a lot to me! I was think about running some 10K's and maybe some 5K's, but I was wanting to run more half marathons. And like i said i was just thinking, or should i say i was thinking out loud. Thanks again!

Barry, I know were you coming from, if your partner isnt a runner as mine isnt, but he is supportive with my training and things. I only do one or half marathons a year, and again only one or two marathons tops, this year, I am doing 1 half and 1 marathon, but the half was my main goal in spring then the marathon in late sept is a main goal.

Best to have A and B races, A being main ones that you train hard for and the b races to supplement your training, as you wouldnt be as fresh or trained specifically for. So I do some 5k and 10k races as B races, then after the marathon, I am hoping to recover quickly and do an A 10k race.

It sounds complicated im not the best for descriptiveness (is that a word?)...

Any ways, I woulnd personally do more than 4 main A races at half marathon distance it really takes a toll on your body, so try to some B races locally and treat as fun. My husband wasnt supportive for years, but has become allot better this last year, I know how hard it can be, when your hearts in it but you dont have the support..

Thank you, you have given me a lot to think about and it really makes sense. I am thinking about running 4 or 5 10k's, but i was wanting to run more 1/2's. A lot of my wife's issue is the cost of running these races. Which I don't blame her, but running is my stress relief for life problems. Anyway, thanks for the advice. :)

Just be careful. Yes races look good and you want to run. But sometimes you regret what you had to pay afterwards and it's not so fun for that one satisfying moment.

I would love to run Boston every year but reality kicks in and I realize I don't want to go that far in debt. Just be careful, cost is always going to out-weigh the fun. We all have credit cards, but they have to be paid sometime. :-)
