After too many days of forced rest (left knee from the bike fall still bruised and right tendon still swallen, STILL SWALLEN! and wound on left knee still open) today my class was canceled and instead of studying like I should have done, I went to the swimming pool and my friend Lindsay, who is a stud swimmer, gave me a lesson with some great pointers on how to swim better. It is so hard! But I really think she helped me out a lot! Friends rock!

So, since the tendon hurts when I run, walk, go down stairs, and bike, I'll be doing the swimming pool for the next week or so. Then I'll start with the bike again for 5 more days, and then try running... Let's hope for the best. Work and school are keeping me busy, so maybe it's a good thing that I can't exercise.

Happy running my friends!

Off to the doc... 2 weeks after my last fall and my knee is still very swallen, not painful but soft and warm - probably bursitis (fluid trapped on the knee cap)

Burt, you wanted pictures?

The right knee scar is from my fall in October when I broke my jaw... The left knee is the one I bumped badly against the concrete two weeks ago.

Running? What is that? I don't remember ever doing any running... maybe it's something I did in a previous life...

A few hours after the doctor drained my bursitis last Friday, it was all back. The doctor didn't tell me to wrap my knee tight or anything... I should've done that... I iced it and kept it wrapped tightly throughout the weekend and yesterday, but it looks exactly the same today. So frustrating... I called the doc and she said to make an appointment with my orthopedic surgeon to maybe get a cortizone shot. I'm going to give it a few more days - I leave for Argentina on Sunday anyway, so I won't be able to take care of it before then. I've been reading a lot about bursitis, and it seems that in most cases it goes away within a week... so I still haven't lost hope.

I had my class midterm yesterday and I did alright, I think. It looks like I won't be wasting my money this semester after all! That's a big plus... Now if I could only run!!! Or bike!!! Or swim!!! It's amazing how much we rely on our knees for everything... I am stuck doing some abs workouts, but even for some of those you have to use your knees!!!

:-(

45 min swimming pool. Boy am I a bad swimmer!

I'm starting to get used to my new friend that lives in my knee. I may try to name him... any ideas?

Mr A. Noying
Mr. B (for Bursitis)

Here's a funny one for us runners - who hasn't had a dream about running?

Hola desde Buenos Aires, amigos!

My buddy and I survived the 12-hour flight and arrived yesterday. It´s good to see the family, I hadn´t seen them in 2 years, that´s just too long. I´m spending lots of time with my nephew who is 2 years old and so full of energy, it´s an exercise of itself just to run after him a few hours.

It´s nice and warm here, about 70 degrees and sunny.

I brought my running shoes and would like to run in this area, but I know I shouldn´t... One of my friends from college became a runner this last year, so it´d be nice to go with him... maybe next time....

Goodness, I don´t even remember what it feels like to exercise!

Hasta pronto amigos!

Hola amigos! I'm back from my trip to Argentina - photos coming. Had a wonderful, wonderful time. Played LOTS with my adorable adorable adorable 2-year old nephew, spent lots of time with family and friends, and walked around the city a lot too. Didn't do any running (Buenos Aires is not a very runner-friendly city, you have to take a bus pretty much to go anywhere you can run, the sidewalks are too crowded and small, there is too much traffic on the streets).

The bursitis went away 3 days into my trip, so I got to show it off to my family and friends down there, ha! And the tendon issue seems better too. And better yet, I didn't gain much weight (probably because I lost muscle...)

Anyway, I'm back and ready to start slow and steady.

Biked to the office from home and ran 5 minutes to the pharmacy, got an antibiotic for a cold that my adorable adorable adorable nephew gave me, and ran back.

I'm signed up for the Cherry Blossom 10-miler in 2 weeks, but decided to switch to the 5k. I need to be patient this time, I really don't want to get injured again!

Now I need to catch up with all of your blogs and news - please let me know if I missed anything important!

Howdy partners in crime!

It's good to be back. Thank you for your comments!

A rainy day in DC, but not too cold and not raining very hard, so after work I did some hilly 3-ish miles in Georgetown, about 35 minutes, with walking breaks in between. Yup, I learned my lesson... I won't rush this time!

Happy weekend!

Three miles at lunchtime to Georgetown hospital and back to the office to bring my friend Ashley some lunch - her boyfriend was having neck surgery.

Ran too fast... right shin hurt... slowed down on way back.

Went to the Argentine embassy after work to see a documentary about the dissappeared during the military dictatorship. Interesting. Went to dinner with the Latino gang and Will "the white guy", ha!

A nice hilly bike ride with Will from my house to the Arboretum and back. Boy am I out of shape! I used to fly up those hills and they were really hurting this time...

Three slow and easy miles during lunch with my office mate Hank, who is trying to get back in shape. Beautiful day! I love DC spring!

Biked to the office and back home.

Biked to the office, though a part of my back derrailer came off when I was about 1 mile away so I had to walk the rest of the way. Got it fixed and plan to bike to Bethesda after work, in the daylight for the first time on the Capital Crescent Trail! I love that trail!
