Biked to the office, though a part of my back derrailer came off when I was about 1 mile away so I had to walk the rest of the way. Got it fixed and plan to bike to Bethesda after work, in the daylight for the first time on the Capital Crescent Trail! I love that trail!

Hey I haven't been on your blog for a while. I hope things are going well. Are you still having shin problems? I started to get shin splints, I haven't had them in a while plus by sciatic issue was not going away. So I decided to ditch the orthotics and bought some inserts called Sofsole Adapt. They are heat moldable although I didn't mold them. My shins stopped hurting and the back pain is better. They where only 30 bucks compared to the 300 I spent on the orthotics. Thought I would let you know, maybe they would help you.

My problem when I ride a bike is that I never bring any tools or spare tubes with me. So if I break down or get a flat, I end up having to call someone to get me.

Burt, my problem when I ride a bike is that I fall. I win. :)

Thanks for the tip Josse, I'll look into those insoles, but what I really should do is go back to the physical therapist that said it wasn't a foot problem but a hip problem...

I read about your sciatica problem, sounds pretty bad, I hope you're feeling better!

Putting insoles in your shoe or orthotics for that matter are usually to help with a hip imbalance as well a correct feet problems. They problem with orthotics is they make the feet muscles weak making you more prone to other injuries, that is always my experience with them. I like the sofsole ones because they are not rigid and still allow the foot to work.

A lot of shin splints are caused by weak opposing muscles. So you might try strengthening the opposite muscle group. So if you get them on the tibialis anterior (front/outside of leg) then do calf raises to strengthen the tibialis posterior and gastroc and soleus muscles. If you get them on the tibialis posterior (the inside of the leg) then strengthen the tibialis anterior by hanging a bucket with a little bit of weight in it off your foot and raise your foot up and down.

My sciatic is doing much better. I still get pain in my SI joint but that is common for me.

Lucia, you have issues with mechanical things!
