Happy new year everyone!
I started this blog in 2009 to follow my old blog (argentinerocket.fastrunningblog.com) from 2008, because I wanted the triathlete format.
Can you think of a better way to start the new year than biking 30 miles along the Skyline Drive, in Shenandoah National Park? I can't! It was a VERY cold but very clear day. A bunch of my friends and I rented a cabin near Shenandoah to spend a few days relaxing and have a nice New Year's eve party. Today they went horseback riding but Will and I wanted to exercise so we went on a nice bikeride. It was so cold I was worried my toes were going to freeze! Thankfully we made it back safe. Here's a picture of the first day of the best year of my life!

Another gorgeous day in Shenandoah. My cabin roommates went to three wineries to get wine tastings and tours, and Will and I went hiking and biking. Will used to be a fast runner but he's been dealing with plantar fasciitis issues and hasn't run in the past couple of years - he may be getting a sort of surgery to fix it, but until then he's a very talented biker and can do some hiking without pain.
Yeah, no running... lazy... I know... |

| Hiked 7 miles on yet ANOTHER absolutely beautiful day in Shenandoah, before heading back to DC and facing the real world... The past few days were so great, surrounded by lots of fun friends doing lots of eating and playing games. Too much fun! |

No exercise today. Not feeling too great but have been reflecting on the new year and what I want for it on my life. Here's a short list of what I'd like to do in 2009:
1. Run a Spring/Summer marathon and qualify for Boston 2010 2. Complete a triathlon 3. Complete a mountain bike race 4. Stay injury-free and accident-free! 5. Cross-train more: do a spin class once a week and swim more frequently 6. Eat healthier
In the non-athletic area, I'd like to:
- Do well in 3 of my master's classes - Take my nieces on a nice winter (july in Argentina) vacation - Do lots of camping and backpacking - Mountain bike in Colorado
Anyone want to share your new year's resolutions? |

A beautiful beautiful beautiful beautful day in DC.
Biked to work, then biked to the gym, then tried to run on the dreadmill but my stupid stupid stupid stupid shins felt super tight and sore, so I moved on to the elliptical machine and did some hard-core intervals for 30 minutes, then some weights, and biked home, having to go alll around the White House cause all the streets around were fenced in, preparing for innauguration. |

Not a good day, but hey, it could always be worse.
Forecast called for freezing rain so I didn't bike - but it was just rain, not really icy, so I should've biked. I'm getting a cold too, so not feeling too well. I was going to go to the gym but decided to get rest instead. Lazybum! My knee also hurts - I heard a crack during one of my many falls while skiing in Colorado a few weeks ago, and that's exactly where it hurts so it may be something related to that. I doubt it's anything serious.
So, I put my gym clothes and a jacket in my backpack and took the metro to work. After work, I knew I should go to the gym... but I needed a mental break and really really really wanted to run outside in the freezing rain. So I decided to run home from work. The thing is, I realized I only had shorts, not pants. But as most of you know I'm as stubborn as a big square rock in the Appalachian Trail, so I decided to run home anyway... The first mile was alright, feeling good, looking tough, loving it... The second mile I started to get pretty cold - my upper body was fine but my quads felt really cold and wet... my shins were so cold that they didn't hurt, which was nice for a change... Yup, my quads were cold... at that moment, Sheryl Crow and her "I'm gonna soak up the sun" came on my mp3 player... can you believe that song really warmed me up? I started singing it out loud, cause there was nobody around anyway... yeah, I was that crazy person you see running outside in shorts soaking wet shivering and singing... As I started feeling even colder and the rain started turning into ice, I knew no matter how tough I was, it wouldn't be smart to try to make it home. So I decided to try and make it to the next metro, Smithsonian. With only about 1/3 a mile there, the Bee Gees came on and their "Stayin' Alive" - yeah, I was going to be OK, thanks to the Bee Gees!. I saw other crazy runners also in shorts around the Washington Monument. Yeah, we're all tough. Finally made it to the metro and warmed up, and made it home.
I need to be smarter about these things. Now I really have a cold. Wah-waaahhhhh! |

| Another cold and rainy day in DC. I think I'm getting a cold so decided to metro to work. After work I was feeling better and determined to "sweat out" the cold, so I ran to the gym, did a 1-hour spin class, and ran home in the rain. Right shin hurt and felt tight, but taking walking breaks helped. Stretched really well afterwards and did lots of strengthening exercises. |

| Sick as a dog... but running helped me feel better. Going to the doc tomorrow. Probably will get antibiotics. Shins felt much better, I've got Barry's stretches to thank - I've been doing more of the post-run step leg raises and they seem to be working. Woohoo! (cough, sneeze) |

4.2 miles, from the Library of Congress down to the Washington Monument and around and back - met up with Trick who just got a new job at the LOC.
Still feeling sick, worse than before - went to the doctor this morning but he said he thought it was a virus and not a bacterial infection so he prescribed "time" and no antibiotics. Bummer, but I guess it's a good thing... Hopefully this viral infection will go away soon!
Shins felt tender but not nearly as painful as before - Barry, yo da man! |

This bug is super strong - sick again this morning, called in to work and all - but then the painters showed up at my house. Ughhh.... I knew if they didn't finish painting today they never would finish, so I let them come in and ended up going to work after all.
Funny story but also kind of cute... I e-mailed the guy I'm dating this morning telling him I wasn't feeling well and had called in sick to work and would stay home resting - but then I ended up going to work... Well, around noon I get a call and it was him, calling from my house; he had shown up in my house during his lunch break to surprise me to give me a hug and some soup! Even though it didn't work out as planned, it was such a nice thought on his part... Goodness, I can't remember the last time anyone did anything so nice for me...
I'm feeling better - maybe can actually run a bit tomorrow! |

Feeling MUCH better.
I was about to hit the gym when I decided to run home from the office instead - boy was it COLD! 20 degrees, but according to weather dot com, with the chilly wind it felt like 10... To my quads, it felt like 40 below! But I made it all the way. |

| Got up early to meet up with my friend Greg and ride up to Seven Springs resort in Pennsylvania - my friends and I rented a condo up there for the weekend to do some skiing and have fun - fellow blogger Aaron (Running with Pepper) was among them, with our friend Tricia being the lead of the pack and Trick also with us. What a fun bunch! Lazy day, didn't do much, checked out the resort after hanging out with everyone and then went tubing. Tubing was so much fun! We did a bunch of little races among us and I was almost the winner every time except for twice when I got beaten by Trick. Then it was back to the condo for a crazy night of playing games, singing and dancing - I got to see a side of Aaron that I hadn't seen before, let me tell you, this guy has some serious moves! What a fun day! |

| No running again as I was up in Pennsylvania again - skied all day - Out of the 9 people in our group, one was injured and didn't ski, the other six were super good skiers and they stayed together and did some black diamonds and double black diamonds, and I was the only chicken of the group who had to stick with the green and blue slopes... wah-wahhhh! My knee was bothering me a little too (same spot that hurt after falling once in Aspen over Christmas but doesn't bother me when I run or bike - not sure what's the deal there) so it was good to keep it low key. The snow conditions were great for the east coast, but nothing compared with Aspen... pretty good but some patches of ice that make you lose control pretty fast. After a full day of skiing we got to rent an outdoor hot tub and we all got to relax for a while there before having some dinner (I was too tired and headed home) and we all went home and crashed. |

| Another day of no running, as some of the group went skiing and some of us went back home... what a fun weekend this was! I was very emotional realizing how random that group of people was, and how well we all got along and had tons of fun. Most of us there were runners so I know we'll see each other in races in the near future. And of course I owe the blog to meeting the wonderful life-of-the-party Aaron and through him the super fun Amy. I'm sure more camping trips, hiking trips, and running adventures await to all of us! |

FINALLY some miles! Inauguration fun all day - I stayed away from the crowds and watched it at home with my friend Sangeeta - it was very emotional to see the crowds, the first Black president, the first president I voted for and is going into office since I became a U.S. citizen, the entire country coming together in support of a new head of state, with great hopes that he will listen to the people and do his best to help the economy, the war, and so many other things that we need to fix right now!
After watching the speech and parade I headed out to the Congressional Cemetery for a few easy miles. Feeling pretty good! Now off to do my stretches! It's going to be a great week full of quality miles! |

Ok people, as I begin feeling better about my running relatively pain-free, I'm having an itch about my future plans... Yes indeed I want to run a BQ relatively soon, believe it or not...
The semester starts on Monday (yes, I am back in school after taking the summer and fall off...) and I'll be taking only one class and supposedly a very easy one. So, I should have time to train properly and hopefully run a marathon at the end of April or sometime in May. That way I'll have the summer off to take another class and do some low-key running and maybe some biking races and triathlons.
The question is, which marathon to run. Any suggestions? I'm willing to travel... I'm looking at Ogden, Salt Lake, Moab, Fort Collins, Capital City (WA), Coeur D'Alene? Of course I have to find out about all of those, if they're flat and if they're BQ, and if I can get in... Any other suggestions?
The plan is to get serious and start increasing mileage starting today, but unlike last year, I will run mostly 40-mile weeks, and maybe one or two 50-mile weeks at the peak of training, but not more than that to avoid injury. Focus on quality over quantity, do some speed work and interval work. I will also cross-train at least two days a week - at the gym (spin and weights) biking or swimming, and that's on top of my bike commute. Something like this:
Mon: bike to work/back; recovery jog (3-4 miles) Tue: 5-10 miles; intervals (to work and/or back) Wed: bike to work/back; spin class Thu: 5-10 miles (to work and/or back) Fri: 5-10 miles; speed work (to work and/or back) Sat: long bike ride with Will Sun: long run
So my questions to you fellow bloggers are: 1. Do you think a 40, sometimes 50-mile week would be enough training to run a BQ marathon? 2. Any suggestions on which marathons to run or avoid?
Thank you guys! happy running!

Ran home from work, 6 miles, the long way. It was bizarre to run on the mall that is now completely empty, when yesterday it was completely full of people! Shins hurt a bit but not too bad. Doing some core work and stretches/strengthening now as I get ready to go to bed - good night!

Biked to work, biked to the Smithsonian after work and met up with the Capitol Striders for a group run around the mall. It's fun running with people once in a while, but I've realized I really enjoy running by my self or with just one or two good friends - not really a group person unless it's a race...
On the way back home I realized I had dropped a glove... so I went back to get it. Surprisingly, it was there still! Lucky me!
Shins hurt a bit more than they have been... not sure if I'll run tomorrow...
TGIF everyone! |

| Planned on going on a long bike ride with Will in Loudon County, near Leesburg. We got there and started climbing these gynormous hills on this beautiful country landscape on a very cold morning, but unfortunately the gravel road had just been turned and it was not suitable for my hybrid bike. Very sad. So we turned around after a few miles and went on the paved W&OD trail. Then Will wanted to turn around cause he wasn't feeling well - it's his birthday today so I kept making jokes about getting old and not being able to bike as much. I don't think that helped ;) Went out to dinner and had some friends over for cake at night and to sing him happy birthday. |

| A beautiful and cold morning in DC - 26 degrees - brrrrrrr. Met up with Tricia, Trick, and Greg R for a quick track workout, but not really. We just did a few laps around to warm up, and then we timed each other on a 400 meter sprint and an 800 meter sprint. I think I did 1:26 in the 400 meters and 3:37 on the 800 meters. I want to see if I improve in the next month or so. I heard about this Yasso workout to predict your marathon time: do 4 800-meter workouts with one lap to cool down in between, and average the times. If you average 3 minutes 30 seconds, it translates to a 3 hour 30 minutes marathon, if you average 4 minutes 10 seconds, you'll run a 4 hour 10 minute marathon, etc. We ran a total of 3 miles on the track, and then I ran home from there, after a quick stop at the Latin American store to pick up some dulce de leche to make ice cream - yummm! I felt pretty tired on the way - so tired that I went into the men's bathroom at the Lincoln Memorial. I didn't realize until I came out and saw the urinals (there was nobody there thank goodness!) and was soooooo embarrassed! This woman saw me and just kept laughing at me. Oh well... Didn't make it all the way home, didn't want to over-do it, so I got on the metro at Smithsonian for some 5 miles more. A good day overall. Shins hurt but not too bad. Did strengthening and stretching. |

| Metroed to work (lazy and coldish...) A cloudy and flurry day in DC - 26 degrees. Cold, but no wind so not too bad. Met my fabulous friend Ashley for a lunchtime run, she's a bit slower than me so it'd be perfect for a recovery jog. We did a nice loop by the river/Lincoln Memorial/Kennedy Center. Shins hurt a little but not too bad. So happy. |

| Six unplanned miles on beautiful snowy DC... Here's the silly adventure: I wanted to go to Pentagon City to buy some yaktrax so I could run in the ice tomorrow. My plan was to go to spin class, then hop on the metro, get the yaktrax, and go home and maybe try them for a few miles. Then at the last minute my boss asked me to proofread something, so I wasn't able to make it to the spin class. So I decided maybe i could run to Pentagon City - the thing is that there is no good and nice way to get there from Georgetown. So I decided I'd run to Arlington Cemetery, and then metro to Pentagon City. Well, I forgot that the Arlington Cemetery stop closes earlier than others... it closes at 7 pm during weekdays. I looked at my cell phone when I got to the metro stop and it said 7:01, I kid you not. My shins were hurting so I knew it wasn't a good idea to keep running, but it was so nice out, and and and I am so stupid, so I kept on keeping on, and ran all the way around the Mt. Vernon trail through the airport through Crystal City and into Pentagon City and got my famous yaktrax. The whole thing would've taken me 30 minutes if I had just hopped on the metro at once, but nooooooooo, I wanted to run... My shins hurt pretty bad after the first mile, but the last 3 miles were a lot better. Did lots of strengthening and some stretching at home. |

So icy and wet out there, how could I not run? I had to try my new yaktrax after all! And they were awesome! Ran from the office to the Rock Creek Parkway, cross the Memorial Bridge on the Mt. Vernon trail, and back to Georgetown via the Key bridge and the C&O canal, muddy and almost completely frozen over - saw some ducks walking and slipping on the ice, very funny! I thought they were supposed to travel South in the winter? silly ducks...
Shins didn't hurt too bad, but I probably shouldn't run tomorrow... sooooo hard not to run!!!! |

| Yeah, a mile is a mile, right? Stayed at work late and ran to the gym to meet up with my friend Bryon, who I haven't seen in a long time - funny thing, we were both sitting at our respective desks, him in downtown and me in Georgetown, thinking that we both really wanted to go out for a run but shouldn't, him for his injured calf, me for my shin splints (and I ran the last 4 days in a row)... so I suggested we meet up at the gym for some biking and catching up, and to keep each other from hurting ourselves from running injured! Too funny. Bryon is an ultrarunner, he's finished the Western States 100 miler twice (25th place both times, I believe) and many many other ultras, and he's currently training to complete the Marathon Des Sables, a super tough stage race in the Sahara. He just finished a snowshoe adventure from West Yellowstone to Mamoth Springs in 3 days. Amazing! It was great to catch up with him while I did some interval work on the bike. Stretched really well and did some of the shin strengthening exercises. My shin hurts a lot right now, even though I didn't run. Bummer. Not sure what to do tomorrow. Really wanted to run to work. |

Man alive was this a gorgeous day! Just beautiful, not too cold not too warm, not windy, sunny... just perfect. Metroed to Ballston with my bike and biked about 2 miles to Bluemont park where the race started. Met up and chatted with some friends before the race which is always nice and relaxing. And off we went in the mud - then on the bike trail. It was a very hilly course and I realized I'm a very strong runner in hills, going up and down, and not that great on the flats. I went out too fast and did the first mile in 7:30, the second mile I slowed way down since my shins hurt, and the rest wasn't marked well. A bunch of people past me between miles 2 and 4, and then my shins started feeling better and the hills started, and I kept passing people both on the up and on the downhills. I don't think anyone past me after mile 4. I hit mile 6.1 at 51:00 and realized how out of shape I am... oh boy... but it was very hilly. I thought for a second that maybe I could break 1 hour, but at that point I thought a 12k was 7.2 miles - hey, that extra .2 miles counts! I sped up a bit the last .5 miles and finished on the muddy terrain again - a few minutes after my friend Brent, but ahead of the other 4 people I knew in the race. Not too bad! We all went to brunch to celebrate after, and then I biked home. Need to do strengthening exercises and stretch! Happy Sunday runners!
Official results are in: I was the 22nd woman out of 105, and the 93rd runner out of 219. As long as I'm on the top half, I'm happy! |

It's definitely not dehydration and I've been eating well, too much perhaps. Felt really lousy this morning but dragged myself to work - as long as I'm sitting down I'm ok. Around 1 pm I started to feel normal.
After work, I ran from the office up to Bethesda on Wisconsin Avenue, past the Cathedral... The Cathedral is one of the highest places in the city, so as you can imagine it was all uphill. My shins were very painful for the first 2 miles, then they felt better. It was a bit windy and cold, not a great run but I did it. |

Snowing here in DC! Beautiful!!! Woke up early and ran from Chevy Chase to the Bethesda metro... I was feeling good, so I ran down Wisconsin to the Friendship Heights metro... I was feeling good so I kept going and ran to the Tenleytown metro... I crossed the street and was going to run all the way back to work but then I thought I had to be smarter than that, with my shin issues and all, so I went back and took the metro to Dupont Circle - from there I ran an extra mile to the office. I would've ran about 7 miles if I had gone all the way... not sure if it made much of a difference. My shins felt much better today than yesterday, not sure what's the deal with that - icing now...
----------
No I shouldn't have but I did... ran 3 miles after work, from the office to the Smithsonian metro and metroed the rest of the way home. Tried to run without hitting the ground with the heels so much but with the ball of the foot and I think it helped a lot... I'll have to thank whomever posted that answer to Lori's question on the discussion board... Did strengthening exercises and stretches afterwards, and iced. I got some of those icing beads and i'm keeping a couple at work so I can ice there too. Good night! |

Shorts and a tank top, that's what I'm talking about! A gorgeous beautiful unbelievably sunny 40 degree day! After a lot of thinking about whether I should run with old shoes (left two pairs of newer shoes at the office), or whether to bike to a trail and run in the dirt which should be better for the shins, decided to just go with it... Went by the Anacostia trail, down around the RFK stadium, to the Capitol, to the National Gallery of Art and stopped there for some water, and back on Pennsylvania. My legs felt tight and weird for the first 3 miles, and then they loosened up and I enjoyed the rest of the run.
Congrats to those of you who are racing today! I hope you get nice weather like us! |

It's 60 degrees here in DC! Cloudy in the morning but sunny in the afternoon. Tried to do too much and ended up messing everything up; live and learn. Will and I met up with Greg for a bike ride on Rock Creek Park - the first two miles were awful, trying to go around people walking or running on the trail... it was just waaaay too crowded, and a lot of people (mostly other bikers and walkers, most runners just stay nicely to the right) are completely oblivious to trail etiquette or simply common manners. The rest of the ride was better, cause they close the parkway to cars during weekends. Greg was riding on a road bike, Will on a mountain bike and I on my hybrid, so even though Will and I are pretty fast, we lost Greg very very fast. Will didn't have much time so we only rode 18 miles, and I rode 5 extra to meet him from my house. Man I am POOPED! That was a hard ride. I relaxed a bit and worked in the office, then ran home at dusk - the moon was huge and right behind the Capitol, I wish I had my camera! As usual, my shins were very tight, especially the right, the first 2 miles, and then they relaxed and I felt better. It's been so long since I ran without shin pain, it seems like an unattainable dream...
My weight is up. That trip to the Argentine store last week was not a good idea. Need to eat better this week. Concentrate in increasing my protein intake and eat less carbs.
Got new shoes yesterday - Mizuno. I was hoping they'd cure my shin splints on the first run but that didn't work...
What a fun day. I wish the weekend was longer... Off to stretch, ice, and study! |

Ran during lunch break on the C&O canal to Fletcher's - went slow for the 3 miles there, then picked up the pace for 2 miles on the way back - I felt like I was flying on the trail, but my splits weren't so good: 8:03 and 8:07... I need to get faster! Total running time was 51 and change. 48 degrees out and sunny! Shorts and a tank top, yeah! The canal was partly frozen over though, cause it still gets freezing at night. Let's hope it doesn't get too cold in the next few days - or that it snows lots! One or the other :)
Shins were ok the 1st mile, then they hurt a bit so I ran the special way (more landing on the ball of the feet) and felt better. The last 3 miles almost didn't hurt at all. Overall they hurt a lot less than yesterday. What a mistery!
Biked to school and home.
Happy Monday! |

42 degrees here in DC, a beautiful morning. Ran to the office, 5.5 miles. Lots of runners out there - most of them nice. I don't get why some runners ignore you when they are coming towards you on the opposite direction... you can just smile, nod, say hi... it makes the run so much nicer! Shins hurt but pain wasn't intolerable. I have a little bit of pain and maybe inflammation just above the ankle on the outside of my right leg - probably I just misstepped on a rock, so I may not run home to let it rest. Now ice, compression, and ibuprofen!
------
A weird day followed by an even weirder evening. First, while trying to help one of my very best friends get out of a funk, I said too much at the wrong time and hurt her badly. I hope she finds it in her heart to forgive me. Sometimes friends just need to talk and you just need to listen, and there are other times to voice your advice and concerns. Then while I was getting ready to go home, an unexpected event occured that made me think someone I trust was being dishonest with me. I was very upset and needed to clear my head, so I decided to run home. It was the right decision - I felt pretty good throughout the run, and decided to face my insecurities head on. An uncomfortable and somewhat shameful conversation later, and the misunderstanding was resolved.
With so many "bad people" out there, hearing friends dealing with husbands that cheated, and having been lied to many times myself, it's hard to give in and trust someone completely. But a life without trust is not worth living.
Lessons learned today: listen, trust, and run taking smaller strides. |

70 beautiful degrees in DC today! My office building was so hot, not even funny. Unfortunately I couldn't get away at lunch for a run. After work I ran to the gym for 15 minutes in the stairmaster - a guy from school told me he was told it'd help with the shin splints. Man the stairmaster makes you sweat like a pig! I also did some "assisted" pull-ups to strengthen my pipes. Then I ran home from there - just in time to beat this strong but quick thunderstorm. It's global warming!!!
Shins didn't hurt much but my lower outside right leg keeps bothering me. Icing right now. We'll see how it feels tomorrow, I may have to metro in to work - wah-wahhhhhh! |

58 degrees, a bit windy, blue skies shining on me, nothing but blue sky do I see...
4 easy miles during lunch - tried to get the guy I share my office with to tag along (he's going through a separation and hasn't been well lately, I thought getting out would cheer him up) but he was only able to go 1 mile and said his legs hurt... so I kept going around Rock Creek and Dumbarton Oaks park. Very pretty. Left shin hurt, right didn't, and just above my right ankle there's something tender, so I won't run tomorrow. I think it's just a sore muscle that needs to calm down, nothing serious - icing now.

Biked to Bethesda from the office in the evening, 10 fast miles against the wind, a gradual uphill, on the Capitol Crescent trail all the way. An awesome ride. |

10 miles bike ride - Biked to the office in the GORGEOUS morning - this time mostly downhill and FLYING by people.
No running today as my leg/ankle still feels a bit sore - hopefully with a day of rest it'll be better - I'm racing the GW Birthday 10k on Saturday morning, my goal is to finish in 48 minutes... wish me luck! Biked home at night, stopped at the gym for some stair work but ankle felt weird so I stopped to have it rested for tomorrow's race...

Ran the GW birthday 10k in Alexandria - did not quite made my goal of 48:00 but not too far off - course was a bit hillier than I thought it would be, with lots of turns and twists. A really nice day and the weather was just perfect, about 39 degrees with blue skies and some clouds, but no wind. Trick stayed with me the first 2 miles but then he fell behind - he hasn't been training much and on top of that he's been sick with a cold. First mile was 7:56, second 8:02, third 7:46, not sure what happened to the 4th mile - my watch says 8:43 but I think the mile marker was wrong - I had some stomach cramps on the last 2 miles so I slowed down a bit. Missed mile marker 5, but finished (unofficially) in 48:48. I forgot to check my overall place, but I saw that I finished 8th out of 24 in my category - will post official times/placement later. I think if I had been able to get better sleep last night I would've done better. But being a good person comes first, and I had to help a friend in need... Alcoholism is a horrible disease, and it's so hard to know what's the best thing to do for those affected by it. I helped as much as I could, but you can only do so much, and if you did more, it can actually end up hurting the person more than helping. Sometimes tough love is the best thing you can do... Please keep my friend in your prayers and thoughts while she goes into rehab. Thank you! Happy weekend! ------------------------ Official results posted: 48:52, 7:39 pace! (for some reason I always think of a 10k in 48 minutes as being 8 minute pace - I forget that .2 matters lots!) 167th out of 659 total entrants, 8th out of 114 women in my age group, 30 to 39!!! Very very happy... good incentive to stop eating and lose some lbs to get faster! Anyone want to break my jaw again? :) thank you for the support!

A great bike ride with Will out by Poolesville and around Sugarloaf Mountain. A sunny day, about 40 degrees, some wind - conditions were just perfect! Because I don't have bike shoes, my running shoes sometimes make my feet cold, but this time I was fine. Very hilly ride, but so much fun. It's nice to have someone that rides at my (pretty fast) pace but doesn't go too fast for me.
Have a great running week everyone! |

No running today, as I want to rest the right leg. It still hurts on the lower-back-outside of the leg, exactly above the ankle. It's tender to the touch and it hurts when I put weight on it on a certain way - like when I'm biking uphill and I stand on the pedals... I'm not sure what it could be. Doesn't hurt very bad at all, but I don't want it to get worse. I'm reading stuff online but can't find anything that relates to it. My guess is that it's probably just a pulled muscle that needs to get rest... I may not bike back today...
Did some core work in the morning, biked to the office to do some studying, as we have the day off today. Biked to school, and then biked home. It was chilly out but clear - soooo nice! I love biking home after school, there is NOBODY out on the mall at 9 pm, and it's just sooooo beautiful. |

Biked to the office. Lower leg hurts when I put weight on the leg when I pedal hard... very bummed. Everything I'm reading points to peroneal tendon damage... it says it takes a while to heal. It almost doesn't hurt when I walk or even run, and I can go up stairs just fine. When I go downstairs and put all my weight on the right leg is when I can really feel it. It's not bad pain at all, but I don't want it to get worse. So I'll probably rest again today, maybe go back to the swimming pool... Bummer cause it's snowing and I love running in the snow! From my office window I can see the runners on Rock Creek Park having fun. Grrrrrrrrr!
I'm applying ice throughout the day and keeping it bandaged and elevating at night. This weekend Will and I are going cross-country skiing - I'm hoping the exercise will not hurt the leg cause you slide and don't put all your weight on one leg that much. We shall see how it goes... for now, resting... |

Should've gone to the pool this morning but the mess of it didn't appeal to me... so I went to the gym. Did 12 minutes on elliptical and 12 minutes on stationary bike - both at low resistance. Leg didn't hurt - but it hurt on the mile walk to the office... It's still inflamed, it's like a bump on top of the ankle bone. Then did some core work, pull-ups and triceps-ups (not sure what those are called). The stupid metro was delayed and I was 20 minutes late getting there, so I couldn't do more than 30 minutes. But it's better than nothing.
Will is taking me to my favorite restaurant tonight for Restaurant Week, when twice a year the upscale restaurants in the city offer deals for us people that don't make a lot of money... looking forward to eating lots of great food! |

Blehhhhh No running - very swollen left knee caused by... hang on.... this one is for real, no joke... ANOTHER bike accident. Yup. This time a lot less serious, and for a good reason. Yesterday, we went out past Alexandria on the Mt. Vernon trail, made it to Mt Vernon and were on the way back to the car when a group of pedestrians was walking up the hill on my side of the bike path while I was going downhill... Tried to break and move further to the right but got off trail, tried to get back on, something didn't work out, and I fell. It seems my helmet hit the ground first, protecting my forehead, and then my nose and my chin sort-of slid on the dirt. I think I hit the dirt and not the pavement, so it was softer... My left knee did hit the pavement very hard, it was so swallen, scary. But nothing seemed to be broken - and thankfully Will was with me to hug me and help me feel better. We biked about 1.5 miles to his car and went home to ice and laugh. No trips to the hospital this time, thankfully. Boy am I going to get sooooo many jokes from my co-workers tomorrow!
I hope all of you readers always wear a helmet, even if you're not as clumsy as me.
So now my left knee has a big bruise and my right leg has a swollen tendon above the ankle bone. The swimming pool is calling... |

Knee swelling went down and hurts a lot less - but the wound is still open so no pool.
My face looks like crap but I went to the gym anyway... did 10 minutes on the elliptical and 10 minutes on the stationary bike, core work that didn't require me to bend the knee, and some pull-ups/arm exercises. The tendon seems to be OK when I do that, as long as I don't put a lot of weight on it, but I can feel it still very inflamed and still hurts when I go downstairs so I don't want to risk running on it.
Very cold here... 20 and feels like 10 cause it's really windy... I know, most of you live in even colder places, so I won't complain. Very sunny at least!
Happy Tuesday!

Weight back to normal this morning... 10 lbs from my perfect weight, but I know I'll never get there. Evidently 138 is where my body wants to be for now. I wonder if I lost muscle since I'm not running and that's why the difference...
Biked to work in the cold but sunny day. After work I dropped off the bike at the shop for a tune-up and went to the gym, 30 min elliptical, 20 min bike, 10 min arms, then went home and did some abs.
I always thought me and my sister(s) didn't look alike at all, but today I saw a picture of my younger sister and I'm thinking maybe I see some similarity... what do you think?

Picked up my bike from the shop after work and biked to Bethesda. Left knee, where I fell, hurts when I walk, not when I bike. Right tendon still hurts. I think next week I really really really need to stick to the pool, no running, walking, biking, elliptical, nothing but the pool... Hopefully the weather will cooperate (and by that I mean it's going to be cold and rainy and windy so I don't feel the urge to be outside).
The weekend is here! Woohoo! |

| Biked to the office on the Capital Crescent trail. I absolutely love this commute. I should move to Bethesda. It's a straight shot on a bike trail the entire way, very few stops to cross streets, so you can fly down. The best part is when I pass biker dudes on racing bikes, the serious bikers, with my mountain bike with hybrid tires and running shoes... I ring my girly bell that says "I heart my bike" every time I pass a guy like that on purpose so they feel less manly... hahaha! Of course then I fall and they're the ones that get the last laugh... |

After too many days of forced rest (left knee from the bike fall still bruised and right tendon still swallen, STILL SWALLEN! and wound on left knee still open) today my class was canceled and instead of studying like I should have done, I went to the swimming pool and my friend Lindsay, who is a stud swimmer, gave me a lesson with some great pointers on how to swim better. It is so hard! But I really think she helped me out a lot! Friends rock!
So, since the tendon hurts when I run, walk, go down stairs, and bike, I'll be doing the swimming pool for the next week or so. Then I'll start with the bike again for 5 more days, and then try running... Let's hope for the best. Work and school are keeping me busy, so maybe it's a good thing that I can't exercise.
Happy running my friends! |

Off to the doc... 2 weeks after my last fall and my knee is still very swallen, not painful but soft and warm - probably bursitis (fluid trapped on the knee cap)
Burt, you wanted pictures?

Running? What is that? I don't remember ever doing any running... maybe it's something I did in a previous life...
A few hours after the doctor drained my bursitis last Friday, it was all back. The doctor didn't tell me to wrap my knee tight or anything... I should've done that... I iced it and kept it wrapped tightly throughout the weekend and yesterday, but it looks exactly the same today. So frustrating... I called the doc and she said to make an appointment with my orthopedic surgeon to maybe get a cortizone shot. I'm going to give it a few more days - I leave for Argentina on Sunday anyway, so I won't be able to take care of it before then. I've been reading a lot about bursitis, and it seems that in most cases it goes away within a week... so I still haven't lost hope.
I had my class midterm yesterday and I did alright, I think. It looks like I won't be wasting my money this semester after all! That's a big plus... Now if I could only run!!! Or bike!!! Or swim!!! It's amazing how much we rely on our knees for everything... I am stuck doing some abs workouts, but even for some of those you have to use your knees!!!

Hola desde Buenos Aires, amigos!
My buddy and I survived the 12-hour flight and arrived yesterday. It´s good to see the family, I hadn´t seen them in 2 years, that´s just too long. I´m spending lots of time with my nephew who is 2 years old and so full of energy, it´s an exercise of itself just to run after him a few hours. It´s nice and warm here, about 70 degrees and sunny. I brought my running shoes and would like to run in this area, but I know I shouldn´t... One of my friends from college became a runner this last year, so it´d be nice to go with him... maybe next time....
Goodness, I don´t even remember what it feels like to exercise! Hasta pronto amigos! |

Hola amigos! I'm back from my trip to Argentina - photos coming. Had a wonderful, wonderful time. Played LOTS with my adorable adorable adorable 2-year old nephew, spent lots of time with family and friends, and walked around the city a lot too. Didn't do any running (Buenos Aires is not a very runner-friendly city, you have to take a bus pretty much to go anywhere you can run, the sidewalks are too crowded and small, there is too much traffic on the streets).
The bursitis went away 3 days into my trip, so I got to show it off to my family and friends down there, ha! And the tendon issue seems better too. And better yet, I didn't gain much weight (probably because I lost muscle...)
Anyway, I'm back and ready to start slow and steady.
Biked to the office from home and ran 5 minutes to the pharmacy, got an antibiotic for a cold that my adorable adorable adorable nephew gave me, and ran back.
I'm signed up for the Cherry Blossom 10-miler in 2 weeks, but decided to switch to the 5k. I need to be patient this time, I really don't want to get injured again!
Now I need to catch up with all of your blogs and news - please let me know if I missed anything important! |

Against all odds, my friends, I did it again... First was a broken jaw, then a bruised knee and bursitis. This time, a broken arm. As I was cruising down one of the bridges of the Capital Crescent trail on my way to the office this morning, this huge skunk came out of nowhere and just stood right on my path! The smell was just sickening! Since I had my water bottle in one hand, I only had one hand to cover my nose - forgetting I don't know how to ride without using my hands, and blinded by the awful smell, I covered my nose and surely enough my bike got out of control and off I went to the right side of the trail, hitting my arm against a big sign that said "watch out for skunks". Ironic, ha? Here's a picture of me with my awesome new cast:

--------------
So I put the same joke on Facebook and my sister saw it, my family called me all worried, poor guys... it was nice talking to them though!
I ran 5.33 easy miles from the office to Clarendon and back in the rain and fog, it's hilly on the way there so good practice. Focused on running taking small steps, stepping right below my body and not in front of it, and it seems to be working, no shin splints... Biked to my house in the rain and did strengthening and stretching. That's a total of 15 bike miles and 5.33 running miles for the day, not bad!
And I seem to have lost a bit of weight... 5 more lbs and I will feel like a goddess, 7 more lbs and I will be dancing around the streets!

Tomorrow is the Cherry Blossom 10-miler and 5k, and I'm doing my first 5k ever... not going to go very fast cause I told my colleague Mike I'd stay with him, so it'll be a good excuse not to go too fast and get injured again.

| An absolutely perfect racing weather day in DC. Woke up, biked to the World War II memorial to meet up with my colleague Mike - we walked to the start line chatting. He used to be really overweight, and a few years ago started biking to work and back, about 30 miles round trip, and lost a lot of weight, Now he started putting it back on, and is turning 30 this year, so he wants to run a marathon - the problem is, we've signed up for 8ks, 10ks, and 10-milers together, and he NEVER trains!!! So, I'm trying to get it in his head that a marathon is no joke and that if he wants to finish without being injured, he needs to take the training a bit more seriously. So that's what we talked about until the race started. I told him our goal was to finish in 30 minutes, 10-ish minute miles, didn't seem hard to attain... it turns out I didn't realize how out of shape he was... We started pretty good, 9:30 the first mile, then he started to breathe really hard and sweat, so I started slowing down a bit... crossed the Memorial Bridge, turned around, had some water, and started the 2nd half to the finish line. I tried to motivate him to go faster but was worried he'd have a heart attack or faint on me, so I didn't push too hard... We finished in 30 min 30 seconds, not bad at all! I think it was a good race to do so that Mike realized how much work ne needs to do before Marine Corps... After the race I met up with a bunch of othe runners, so weird how you can see people you know in a crowd of thousands of people! Then I biked home and met up with Will to go on a gorgeous bike ride to Annapolis, followed by crab soup sitting on a sunny restaurant deck by the bay. Will's kids got 1st and 9th place on the kid's 1-mile fun run. What a fun day! |

| Biked to the office (5), after work ran in Rock Creek Park for 30-ish minutes, then biked to Bethesda (10). Gorgeous but cold day. Lowering my bike seat seems to make a difference - my tendon pain is not bad today, even after biking lots yesterday and today. I also didn't go very hard or got up and pushed hard on the hills, just lowered the gears a bit more. The positive thing is, running doesn't seem to affect it. So my boss tried to convince me that I got a "promotion" yesterday... I was given two huge extra responsibilities, one is writing a weekly newsletter to our members that includes information that I know NOTHING about, so it'd all be new research, the other is managing a huge data mining project, that a research assistant and two interns are working on. Ummm... did I get a title change? Nope. Did I get more money? Nope. Supposedly it'll happen soon... I'm going to be spending LONG days here in the office for a while! I am wearing my "skinny pants". I haven't been able to fit in these pants since 2006 (ironically, since just before I started training for my first marathon) They're slightly tight, but fit enough to wear them to work, so I'm happy. I'd like to lose 5-6 lbs more, but I'll take my current weight! It's amazing how much it affects my mood. I feel so much more self confident now than 3-4 months ago, even though probably nobody else can notice much of a difference. Peace out! |

| Biked to the office from Bethesda in the beautiful morning. I love that ride! After work, went running for about 30 minutes. My tendon was hurting, probably from the morning ride, so I didn't want to push it, though running doesn't seem to make it worse. I went on the C&O canal, wanted to try to find where the Dumbarton Oaks trail start, so I went under this dark and scary tunnel that goes underneath Canal Road... then I saw what appeared to be a trail through the trees... so I followed it... bad bad idea - lots of garbage and signs that homeless people stay there often... so I tried to go fast - thankfully, it just went to a road in Georgetown University, so I ran across the campus and back to the office. I'll have to look up that trail some other time. Biked home after the run. |

Another gorgeous day in DC - it was supposed to rain but it didn't. This weekend is supposed to be very wet, which is perfect for me since I have to work and study! Biked to the office, we closed early for Good Friday, so around 3 I went for a run around the bridges - I looked at the route closer on mapmyrun.com and it's longer than I thought, almos 5 miles, so I'm updating my miles from yesterday too. It's really hot, almost 70. I don't think I ate properly pre-run or drank, cause I didn't feel too well - my stomach cramped up for the entire first half, and the deep breaths didn't help much. Finally it went away and I was exhausted - I wanted to stop and walk soooo many times, but I never gave in - I slowed down at parts but then I sped up to get it over with... I think the change in temperature affected me. I did take my camera with me this time, so I could show you the gorgeous places where I run, especially the beautiful flowers - I can't wait for Azalea season!
Some pics: First, the sunset from the cherry blossoms in the tidal basin, the Memorial Bridge on the back
Next, the same trees from the other side, illuminated by the sunset
Red tulips adorn the entrance to the Arlington Cemetery, on the other side of the Memorial Bridge - the Lincoln Memorial is on the background
And last, another flowering tree on the trail by the Rock Creek Parkway, the last mile of my ride to the office. The Key Bridge and Georgetown in the background.
I hope you enjoyed the photos, Happy weekend! |

Wow. I am sitting in my office looking at the rain out the window and having one of those "wow", overwhelming moments when you realize how good it is to be alive.
It's pretty cold, rainy, and windy out there. I came to the office to do some work, and the running routes from here are much better than from my house so I often run from here. Left the office with the intention of doing the regular 4.8 mile bridge run... It felt so good to be outside! Running seemed so easy! No shin pain! Almost no tendon pain! As I was approaching the cemetery where I'm supposed to turn around, I was feeling so good that I decided to go to the next bridge, 395, so I did... not that great of an idea, the wind was really strong there and I got a little bit cold, but it felt so good! The cherry blossoms are almost all faded away, but the ones left are absolutely gorgeous! About 100 yards from my office I ran into my friends Brent and James, who had just started their 15-mile run! I cannot believe the amazing coincidences, I see them all the time, even though we don't live or work nearby, and no matter how many people there are at a race, I always run into them. It was so good to see them. Anyway, I ended up doing almost 7 miles, which is great cause I have a 10-miler coming up in a few weeks. It's hard to believe my shin spints are gone... I'm still stretching and strengthening, and will for a very long time, but it seems all paid off! I owe that to so many of you, especial mention to Barry, Lori and Josse, your recommendations were so helpful!
Already, now it's back to work, then biking home if the rain stops and the sun comes out as weather.com says! Then rewarding myself with dinner at my favorite vegetarian place, Java Green! Have a great weekend everyone! |

No running today but a very nice bike ride near Schaeffer Farms in Maryland. A MUST go to destination for all bike riders in the DC area!
Took a nice evening walk with Will in the evening, after an afternoon of studying. What a great weekend. |

Rainy day here in DC
No biking for me for a week to see if it helps the tendon. But, I can run!
I'm going to do the bridges run after work, since the trails will be too wet and muddy...
My colleague Diego came back from vacation to a mess done by racoons! He found two baby racoons in his fireplace, and they think the mother is still in the house hiding somewhere, or dead... how bizarre is that? Imagine if you're a professor and a student comes in and says "Mr. Jones, I can't come to class, I have a racoon problem" - hard to believe!
On other news, my office mate Hank's car got broken into last night. He lives in a pretty good neighborhood (Glover Park) so I was very surprised. They didn't take anything of value, just some change...
As it has become routine, I heard 8 shots fired around the corner from my house last night. It seems things are getting worse... I wish I could blame the economy, but this guys are not about that.
Anyone has good news to share???
------------
Ran from the office to the Dupont metro after the bridges run, so an extra mile. |

Very humid, cloudy, pretty cold, rainy day. Ran from mile 2 of the CCT to Wisconsin, then down Wisconsin all the way to the office. Not the prettiest run but not too bad. 1 hour 10 mins, that includes many stops for traffic lights. I need to find a prettier, more quiet route to do from Bethesda; going on the CCT all the way is almost 10 miles, which I'm not quite ready to do yet - hopefully I will be in the summer!
Tendon hurts very little, but right under my knees it started to hurt a bit (a new pain, isn't that exciting?) - hopefully it's nothing. Icing the tendon and the knees. Probably running last night and this morning wasn't the greatest idea... I'll only do 3-4 miles the rest of the week.
Update on the raccoon incident: my co-worker found it last night, she was hiding under some blankets protecting a baby raccoon... poor mommy raccoon, I hope they both make it out ok! |

| Ran home from the office after work on the absolutely incredibly beautifully perfect DC weather, just as the sun was going down behind the monuments... Right shin was a bit tight in the middle, but I slowed down a bit and started taking shorter steps and it loosened up. Right tendon didn't really bothered me, knees were fine. |

| Four-ish miles at lunchtime with Irving, the association president's driver. He was a fast runner in high school and stopped as an adult, and now at age 50 he's getting into it again, "inspired" (aka pushed) by yours truly. Gorgeous day. Went slow with Irving the first 30 mins, then dropped him off and went another 10. No pain! |

| I spoke too soon. On Friday, I sprinted the last 100 meters to race my friend Irving, and I don't think that was a good idea. My left heel hurt a lot Friday evening, and yesterday. I iced it and it helped, but didn't go away completely. I think I got a bruised heel, which shouldn't be too hard to heal. But I wanted to go for a run today, and I didn't feel well at all. My left heel hurt, so I put more weight on the right leg, which caused my right tendon and shins to hurt. So I went really really slow and in a very bad mood. The last mile I started noticing the gorgeous flowers around, the Dogwoods are flowering, the Azaleas are starting to show, very pretty, so I felt better. Icing now. Congrats to all of you that raced this weekend, very exciting to read the race reports! |

Biked to the office from my house, left bike in office and did a nice 30 min loop by the very muddy Rock Creek Park - we've had so much rain lately, which is good cause it makes all that pollen go away! Will try to run a bit more this evening before biking back. Left heel still hurts a bit but not too bad, and tendon doesn't hurt at all.
How about that Boston marathon, ha? Such an exciting finish, yet the slowest time for women ever recorded? See you next year, Boston!

PM: Found out a couple of my colleagues got laid off today, including one of my best friends, the person who recommended me for my current job, and someone I've learned a lot from. Very sad and worrysome... I guess I won't be getting a pay raise any time soon, and glad to have a job - there are advantages to making little money, it makes you less likely of a target if they need to cut costs... Anyway, I was very upset so I decided to run home. Great idea, it was rainy and beautiful out, the sun set behind the clouds right at the moment when I was going up Capitol Hill, so I was able to enjoy the bright oranges and reds... Not sure if it was because my mind was worrying so much about all these, but I had almost no pain, only a little bit on my left heel. |

Beat lazyness and ran to work in the cloudy morning. Weather.com said 20% chance of rain.... 20% my behind! I got soaked, and even some hail fell on me... But it was a great run and very little heel and tendon pain.
We just had a full staff meeting to talk about changes, people being laid off, people taking pay cuts, and the financial situation of my workplace. Depressing. Also slightly reassuring, knowing that I made it past the cuts, and that the people that were let go are either single or have a significant other that works, so at least they aren't leaving entire families without the breadmaker... An alarming situation nevertheless... I have confidence that we'll bounce back quickly, but until then things are going to suck... |

| Tendon hurt after the morning bike ride to the office... gahhh! After work I went to try again to find the magical Glover Park trail... so took the C&O canal, went on the creepy tunnel under Canal Rd., and there it was, right on the left! It's a really nice trail considering that's in the middle of the city. Not good to build speed, but with several very hilly spots, lots of rocks and roots so you have to pay attention, but they make your ankles stronger. The trail keeps going North but I cut across towards the Dumbarton-Oaks park into Rock Creek, after passing through the Brazilian Consulate, the Italian Embassy and the Dutch Embassy - what beautiful buildings! Felt pretty good overall, luckily running doesn't seem to aggravate the tendon at all. I was out there for 50 minutes (not including 5 extra minutes cause I had to go back into the office to use the facilities...), and that includes several stops to find my way after going the wrong way.... I biked home after that, going rocket-fast, and put the bike in the closet so I won't feel tempted to use it for a very long time. |

Ran to the office from home on a gorgeous morning, a bit coldish (45-ish) but warmed up later on. Left heel hurts a bit, tendon hurts a bit. Went pretty slow but did a couple of faster 300-400 meter intervals.
Now I have to decide my "strategy" for the next 2 weekend races... I have a 10-miler this Sunday, and an 8k the following Sunday. The 8k is for a group race that my company is sponsoring, and we have a chance of winning a prize, so I want to race that one really well. The question is, can I/should I try to go fast this weekend on the 10-miler, or would that hurt my chances of doing well on the 8k? I feel like at this point I don't really have a chance of PRing on the 10-miler, but I probably can do better than last year on the 8k... Thoughts?

Very hot morning in DC! Biked 3 miles to meet up with my friends, at 7 supposedly.. 7:20 finally everyone was there - we barely made it in time after the long cab ride to Mt Vernon, in Alexandria. The race started slow, along the very green George Washington parkway that runs along the Potomac. A gorgeous course, and the road is nice and wide. The first 2 miles were slow, passing lots of people, but my right shin was feeling tight and almost cramping up... right after mile 2 I saw Camille and Dave right in front of me! I couldn't believe it and got worried that I was going so slow! I think they started a bit too fast, that's what it was... finally by mile 3 or so it had loosened up and felt much better for the rest - and I passed Camille and David finally! My stomach was not feeling well, and I had to go to the bathroom since the very beginning, so I was a bit uncomfortable the whole time. It was very hot, so I poured water on my head at the water stations. I took a gu at around mile 6 cause I was feeling a bit low in energy, not sure if it worked. I didn't feel really bad, but I didn't feel really good either. I felt I was going slow the entire time... but this wasn't my target race so whatever... what matters is I finished! My time was close to 1:24, official results are not posted yet. Here are some of my splits:
Mile 2: 17:01
Mile 3: 8:40
Mile 4: 8:43
Mile 5: 8:41- 5-mile split was 43:04
Mile 6: 8:33
Mile 7: 8:10
Mile 8: 8:34
Mile 10: 15:50
Pretty good negative split, I won't complain. Not a PR but considering I haven't been back from injury that long ago, I'll take it.
Camille finished in 1:30 and David in 1:36 or so. They were happy.
Tendon didn't hurt, heel didn't hurt, overall a good day but while I was running that's not what I was thinking!!! I like point-to-point races too, though it's also entertaining to watch the faster runners come your way when a race is out and back on the same street, and also to see the slower runners behind you, ha!
Lessons learned: 1. When meeting up with other runners to get to a race, call them in the morning to make sure they're up, and leave some cushion time between race start and meeting time. 2. Don't eat ice cream with dulce de leche the night before a race. 3. Don't wear those insoles again, they give me blisters.
----------- Results are posted but not age group results yet... I was 771st out of 4 thousand runners... that always gives a good perspective, being on the top 25% is not bad.

Ran the Capitol Crescent trail from Connecticut Ave. to the Bethesda metro - it's such a great run, so flat, quiet, through the Congressional golf course... lots of birds... Legs are a bit tight but not so bad. Got blisters on the bottom of my feet though, so I won't be using those insoles for a while, or maybe will try wearing them in the Adidas... Metroed from Bethesda to Dupont Circle and ran to the office from there. Nice and slow, good recovery run...

Ran from home to the office. Hot day! Felt slow. Maybe I should start having something to eat before leaving. Also very thirsty. Need to start drinking more water. Blisters hurt a bit, I hope they go away fast. Tendon hurts a bit. Icing now.
A friend of mine sent me this, I'm usually not a big fan of stuff like this, but some of the things here are pretty good... I particularly need to keep in mind numbers 13, 26, and 42.
1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good. 2. When in doubt, just take the next small step. 3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone. 4. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends and parents will. Stay in touch. 5. Pay off your credit cards every month. 6. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree. 7. Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone. 8. It's OK to get angry with God. He can take it. 9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck. 10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile. 11. Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present. 12. It's OK to let your children see you cry. 13. Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about. 14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it. 15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don't worry; God never blinks. 16. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind. 17. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful. 18. Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger. 19. It's never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one is up to you and no one else. 20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no for an answer. 21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don't save it for a special occasion. Today is special. 22. Over prepare, then go with the flow. 23. Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to wear purple. 24. The most important sex organ is the brain. 25. No one is in charge of your happiness but you. 26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words 'In five years, will this matter?' 27. Always choose life. 28. Forgive everyone everything. 29. What other people think of you is none of your business. 30. Time heals almost everything. Give time time. 31. However good or bad a situation is, it will change. 32. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does. 33. Believe in miracles. 34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn't do. 35. Don't audit life. Show up and make the most of it now. 36. Growing old beats the alternative -- dying young. 37. Your children get only one childhood. 38. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved. 39. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere. 40. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's,we'd grab ours back. 41. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need. 42. The best is yet to come. 43. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up. 44. Yield. 45. Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift." |

From Chevy Chase to work, via CCT-Wisconsin-Mass-Park-R-28th. One hill on Wisconsin before getting to Friendship Heights, then another one just before Tenleytown, another by the Cathedral, then downhill all the way on Mass, and a nasty hill to get out of the park, then downhill again. I like the uphills and downhills, and Mass Ave is nice... Wisconsin is not - need to try to find a nicer route. When i'm done w/school for the semester I'll do the entire thing on the CCT, that's about 10 miles.
Cloudy, very nice temp.

|
Official results: 37:27. Finished 20th out of 136 women, and 7th in my age group, out of 32.
Team results are wrong, they forgot to put my time there!!! Cheaters! Once they fix them we'll be in 10th place, out of 13 corporate co-ed teams, not last place... last year we were 2nd, what's up with that? In any case, it was indeed a fabulous race in the rain! Team Roadbuilders had fun, I got a PR, I beat two former co-workers that always always used to beat me...
I felt ok the first 3 miles, but my breathing seemed too hard... I kept pushing anyways... Legs felt ok, right shin slightly tight. I was doing just a bit slower than 7:30 miles, which is about what I was looking for. Around mile 4 I thought I saw Brent and Amy, former co-workers that are super fast and always beat me! I started thinking how cool it would be to beat them... impossible... maybe not? Let's try! So I passed them! Brent gave a little bit of a fight but I pushed harder and sprinted as hard as I could, down a hill and up the hill and my breathing was so hard, I was wheezing, almost passed out! Never pushed myself harder, that last quarter mile was eternal but I crossed the finish line before Brent and Amy! So happy! (they weren't really training for this race as I was, so it shouldn't count, but I'm happy either way)
Ok, back to the books!
So proud of Bonnie for doing so great in Eugene!!! Very cool! |

No running... Slept 2 hours last night, kept getting up to review something for the final exam...
Went to work and went to school. The final exam was 10,000 worse than I could have possibly imagine... Ok maybe I'm exagerating a bit, but it was bad. I understand that they want to know how much we can do, but introducing a new concept in every single problem is just not right. They are measuring not what we learned but how fast we can think under pressure in a crowded room... some of us just don't do well there. That's why most classes have problem sets or papers that you turn in, so you can prove that you know the material even if you are not good at taking tests. Unlike in the midterm, every single person in the room stayed till the very end. We all got out of the classroom and looked at each other in disbelief. All those long hours, weekends studying. All for nothing.
There's a chance that everyone did as bad as I did and he'll curve the grades... But there's a big chance I failed. I should know by next week. In the meantime, I'm going to enjoy my freedom. Thanks everyone for your good thoughts! |

After work I ran on the C&O Canal to Fletcher's boathouse and back. It has been raining so much, the trail was pretty wet but doable. Except for one little part... there was a lot of water, but there was a wooden beam in the middle of it... So I thought I could jump on top of the beam and be ok... I forgot the beam would be slippery, so I slipped and fell and my right lower leg landed on the beam. I have a beautiful bruise. But, like my 20 years younger twin Maddy, I got up and kept on running! No big deal. I'm getting better at falling, ha!
Other than that it felt good. No pain! |

Got up and thought it was too late to run to the office, so I turned on the shower... then I realized I had time to run to the office. So I packed my little backpack and I ran. Felt good! It rained hard all night, but thankfully it didn't as I was running, though the humidity must be close to 100%. Is there such a thing?
For those of you interested, Saucony has a contest called "We know", you have to come up with a catchy phrase, like "We know pain is relative because we run", "We know life is good because we run", etc., and you can win $1,000 in merchandise. I came up with three lame ones... "We know giving up is not an option", "We know there's beauty in exhaustion", "We know the finish line is only the beginning"... Who knows, maybe the person choosing them thinks they're cute... I'll have to come up with something cleverer...

I ate too much last night so my weight was terrible today... need to continue watching myself...
Ran the Pacer's half marathon pacing my friend Ashley - My goal was to get her to run sub 2-hours... her goal was just to finish... I didn't hit my goal but she hit hers, and got a 1-minute PR. It was nice and slow, I was so glad I didn't try to push myself to PR... though it would've been a nice course to do it... It's hard being a pacer - you don't know how to motivate your runner... you don't want to push too hard but that's also what you're there for, so it's finding the right balance... A fun day with a fun friend, and I talked to some other running friends at the finish line. There should be several nice running pics of me this time - I need to find ONE good picture of me running other than the one from 5 years ago and the one when I had my mouth wired!
Next weekend is the Capitol Hill Classic 10k, I want to PR on that one. Hopefully the weather will cooperate!

Nice and easy run at lunch in sunny - yes, I said SUNNY DC! Finally! Went on the canal to Fletcher's Boathouse and back to the office. Did a couple of faster intervals. Tomorrow I'm planning on doing a few Capitol Hill repeats.
I mapped the profile of the hill with this awesome website:
http://www.heywhatsthat.com/profiler.html
and
it says the hill is slightly longer than 0.4 miles, and climbs 112
feet, 4.8% grade on average... I know it doesn't seem much, but for
some reason it kills me. I think the main problem is that you go down
it first, and as you go down you see everyone struggling up it on the
other side of the street... if you went up it first and then down it,
you'd be thinking "Ok I just need to get up there and it's all downhill
from there" but noooooo, after you are up it it's all flat till the
.5-ish mile to the finish line...
What do you think, is it a hill worth mentioning, or am I being a sissy? ---------- Pictures from this weekend's race - You can tell by my big smile that I did not run very hard!

Ran from the office to Capitol Hill after work, and went up and around the hill 3 times before running home. First I tried to run up really fast... and 10 seconds later I realized that wouldn't work... So I slowed down a bit and made it up as fast as I felt it was feasible (which was pretty slow)... The first time up took me 1 minute 44 seconds, the 2nd I couldn't measure cause I didn't hit the right button on my watch, and the third took me 1 minute 43 seconds... So it sounds like it's OK hill training, about what Bonnie suggested... I feel a little better prepared to run up the hill on Sunday's race.
So, this morning, I woke up, showered, and weighed myself... 4 times... I tapped the screen thingy to make sure it wasn't a 7 instead of a 1... nope, it's a 1... I hadn't seen a 1 that wasn't following a 4 in about 5 years... Sooooo, I ran into my closet and dusted off a bag that has an old pant suit that hasn't fit me in 5 years... and sure enough, it fits! Happy, happy, happy.
To celebrate, I ate 2 cup cakes from my office mate's birthday party.... smart, ha? |

| Ran to the office from home in the morning. Very humid but not too hot, a very nice morning. Felt tired... probably should've waited more time before running after doing the hill workout yesterday. I wonder how well I'll do on Sunday... it's supposed to rain; I hope that doesn't slow me down too much. I've been training more than last year, I'm less heavy than last year, and should be better mentally prepared for that last hill... but the course is not as fast as the Veteran's day 10k where I PR-ed last November... I think I can knock off 2 minutes from last year's time, so I'd do 48 minutes and change... My last race was an 8k at 37:27; my last 10k was 48:52 in February, and my 10k PR was last November at 46:51. The McMillan Running calculator says I should be able to do 47:12... And I hadn't entered my 8k time there as I usually do after a race to find out what my equivalent marathon time would be: it says 3:41:31... I am not that far from that BQ after all! |

Biked to work on Bike to Work day! Lots of more bikers out there. I had the bad idea of sending an e-mail letting everyone in my office know that it was bike to work day... you can imagine all the smart behind responses I got...
I planned on leaving work in time to get a short run in before heading to an International Dinner Party that my friends organize every month, but my boss had something else in mind. I hate having to stay late on a Friday! Biked home and went to the dinner... no running.... |

Easy miles to loosen up the legs before tomorrow's race - ran to the bank to make a deposit, then ran down Capitol Hill, then up on the other side, into the school that organizes tomorrow's race to pick up my bib and t-shirt, then ran to the Eastern Market farmer's market, got some fresh strawberries to make some ice cream for my friend's graduation party, and walked home. It was supposed to rain today but so far nothing, it's very muggy and humid, hot but not too bad. I can't wait to see how everyone did in the Ogden Marathon today!!! Wish me luck for tomorrow! |

I was going to wait till tomorrow to post this to give it more suspense... but decided against it... I can't do that to poor Eric!
Since the start was only 1 mile away from my house, I decided to get up only 40 minutes before race start... which wasn't such a good idea because I wouldn't have much time to digest breakfast... I got dressed, had a piece of toast and a little coffee, and off I went - jogged 1 mile to the start line, it was drizzling a little... My stomach wasn't liking it too much but it held up alright. I really liked that jog by the way, I'm going to start doing it for every race. It really loosened up my legs so I felt stronger during the race. I found my friends Mai and Guy at the start line, this was their 2nd race and they are becoming great runners, very exciting. Thankfully the rain had stopped by the time the race started. I forgot to start my watch, but I remember the first mile was almost exactly 8 minutes, the second about the same, the third was faster, like 7:30... and then it was down and up the hill, miles 4 and 5. I was ready... I flew up it feeling great, and ran the last mile pretty fast towards the finish line. Clock time was 47:58 and chip time 47:40, much better than my previous time (50:23) - not my 10k PR, but for a hillier course it wasn't too bad. 57th place out of 1,143 women, and 9th out of 274 in my age group, hey, top 10, that's not too shabby for Lucy!
The elite guys are going to be mad though - at one point during the race one of the course marshalls wasn't paying attention, and we got on the way of the elite runners! People coming in were supposed to stay on the left side of the road and the faster guys coming out after the hill were supposed to stay on the right - someone screwed up. I hope it wasn't too bad, I'm sure we'll read about it on the washington running paper - this race has been going on for 30 years, very strange they don't have everything figured out.
Will was supposed to meet me at the finish line but he got lost. He grew up here and he's never been to the library of congress or the Arboretum, and he gets lost in the city. Go figure. I ran home and we went to brunch - banana crepes with nutella and whipped cream, yummm!
Now I'm at work getting things ready for this week's conference, and going to also read the race reports for all the Ogden runners! Happy Sunday! |

Ran to the office. Checked the distance with the new Gmaps pedometer map, it seems more precise, and you can check a box for runners or cyclist. It doesn't have all sidewalks, but works for the most part. Will try to get 4 miles more before heading home tonight.

Ok, so I told my boyfriend that I was aiming to qualify for Boston in October and he laughed! He wasn't being mean, he just thought I was actually joking... He's ran several marathons (his fastest time 3:40 I believe) so he knows it's not easy, but still... well, it made me think about it... my first and only marathon, October 2006, was 4:08... the 10k I ran last week was 48:40... the McMillan running calculator translates that time into a 3:48 marathon... Can I shave 2 minutes off my 10k and 8 minutes off that marathon time in 4.5 months??? I ran a 46:30 10k in November... so I think it's possible... I need to do some speed work/hills in the next few months... a lot of it!
Does anyone know how accurate the McMillan calculator is in practice?
What do you fellow runners think, am I dreaming? I don't want to get my hopes up too much and then be disappointed... I rather be realistic... doubt sucks!
----------------------
Ran 3 miles to Clarendon to get some dulce de leche at the latin american store and ran back to the office. Felt very tired and hot. Metroed home and made ice cream for my friend Diego's graduation party. Made dulce de leche, and earler this week I made strawberry.... yummm! |

Woke up early and metroed to my friend Sangeeta's house - drove her to the hospital to get surgery to remove a cyst from her tailbone. Poor thing. It was actually sort-of fun being in the hospital when someone else is getting surgery and not me!
The surgery was quick, and I drove her home, picked up some pain medication and went back to her place. Didn't run... partly for being lazy and partly I didn't want to leave her alone the day of surgery... But she was feeling ok, was able to walk and everything... |

Stayed with Sangeeta last night to make sure she was OK with the pain killers and all... she was, so this morning I metroed home. Her sister and some other friends were coming over to see her today, so I knew she'd be ok. I was planning on going backcountry camping with Will and some friends, so I got home and packed for 2 hours, had everything ready for when Will picked me up... the rest of the group was already in Shenandoah, we were supposed to meet them at the backcountry site. Will got to my house and told me he really shouldn't hike with a heavy pack at all because of his injury (he needs to get surgery on his feet for an issue the doctors can't tell exactly what it is but think surgery would help...) - he had told me he couldn't hike "very much", but I asked him how much is too much and he said 3 miles would be OK... but then his macho man retreated and his reasonable man came out and realized he shouldn't hike at all. Grrrrr, why didn't you say so before I wasted my time making all those plans and packing? Water under the bridge... so we went mountain biking instead, to Schaffer Farms, GOR-GEOUS! Had a fabulous time, didn't fall, got tons of bruises though, not sure how. I was able to get over most roots, rocks, and logs, but a few I can't do yet... Fun times!
We went back to Bethesda and I ran 4 miles on the Capitol Crescent trail.

Biked to the office from Bethesda, 10 miles. Did some work I had left from Friday - nice being in the office when nobody is around! In the afternoon I ran to Ballston to see my friend Sangeeta and how her recovery was going. Hot and muggy... felt really tired, went really slow. Not sure why I'm so tired lately... need to watch my food better. May be the heat, but it's not that bad yet... maybe I need to get used to it.

Took a detour in Georgetown and made the BIG mistake of stopping at the Lululemon store... their running tops and shorts are soooo cute but soooo expensive! But soooo cute... I had to have one... my only vice: running stuff... I have NEVER paid that much money for regular clothes... I really shouldn't put zero here... but technically, I didn't go running... Once or twice a month I volunteer with an organization called KEEN (Kids Enjoy Exercise Now), playing sports with children and teens with cognitive disabilities. Oh boy, kids have so much energy! It's only a couple of hours, but by the end you are truly spent. I participated in the music program this time, so we did lots of singing, playing with different musical instruments, and dancing. Every once in a while one of the kids took off running so fast, I wanted to hire him as a coach! You would've thought we were torturing them, cause they were trying to escape all the time... Too funny...
After that I volunteered as course marshall at a local race, the first Capitol Striders 8k, on the Capitol Crescent trail. As soon as I got to the start line, the course director asked me to get on a men's road bike with an odometer, holding the mile marker signs on one hand, and stopping and posting them every mile... Why he asked me to do this knowing about my luck with bicycles, I don't know... But I did it, and survived. Then monitored the course to make sure the bikers knew there was a race going on, and took some pictures. Boy were some bikers mad! Ridiculous. It was a fun time. I should've ran before or after the race... but didn't.
Went to an Arabic-themed party at night, so much fun! My costume was very conservative so I'd post pictures, but in all the pics I'm dancing with girls that were not embarrassed to show their "talents" :)
A girl from Colombia and I were laughing cause we had trouble learning some of the moves, because they are so specific... Latinas are more used to moving everything at the same time, like when you dance salsa or merengue. But they said I didn't do so bad. Need to practice more! |

| What a day! Gorgeous out. Beautiful. Will picked me up and we drove a loooong way to Olney, MD, and did a great, tough, hilly 1-hour ride, mostly in a farm-like setting/residential area. It's funny how you are so exhausted when you're going uphill on a bike (or running) and you think "man, we should've picked a flatter route", but then you get to the top, or finish your ride, and it feels so good! In the afternoon I ran on the trails of Rock Creek Park for a bit less than 1 hour. Nice and shady. Lots of people out. |

Biked from Chevy Chase to the office (10 miles), all the way on the CCT, on a very crispy morning! For the first time since I've been riding that trail, a lot of bikers past me... I don't mind when the hard-core looking bikers pass me, (I could beat anyone if I had a road bike!), but at least nobody that's a commuter biker like me passes me... Plus I was carrying a heavy pack! Anyway, it was a great ride.
Ran after work around Dumbarton Oaks/Glover Park - feeling awful, like my blood pressure is down or something... I had to walk a lot. I thought I was going to faint - even though I ate all day long...
Had a granola bar at the office and biked home (5 miles). |

If I had gone running even for a little bit, and if it had been a little less cloudy this would have been the best day ever e-ver, period.
Will took me to Blackwater wildlife refuge in southern Maryland. One of the most beautiful places I've seen in the East coast. Absolutely gorgeous! We biked 40 miles on the almost empty roads, a very flat ride but we were going fast. Then we kayaked for an hour or so, we were pretty tired... Will bikes on his mountain bike the whole time, so he gets a great workout! Too tired to run when we got back, tomorrow I'll get a good run, hopefully with Mr Montelepsy! |

| Eleven and something nicely-paced miles with the unique, ineffable, (and indeed handsome, Rachel!) Montelepsy! A perfect day in DC, gorgeous weather, sunny, a bit warm but nothing compared to Iraq, right?
Mike and I met up at my office in Georgetown and I showed him almost all my favorite runs: we went up 28th into the trails of Dumbarton-Oaks park, then over into the trails of Glover Park down to the C&O canal... I got disoriented at one point and wasn't sure we were going the right place! Poor Mike, he had to put up with me going back and forth on the trail, until we found the way. We went to Fletcher's Boathouse on the canal, then back on the Capitol Crescent trail, up to the Key Bridge and into Roosevelt Island, one of my favorite monuments in DC, then back onto the bridge on the canal to my office. Poor Monte, he had to put up with me talking nonsense the entire way. I do think he put something in my water though, cause after we finished the run I spent a lot of time in the ladies room... That, or the 50 peanut butter cups I ate before the run didn't do well in my tummy... Before the afternoon run, I went to Hayden's park near Potomac, MD to take part in a huge festival that Kids Enjoy Exercise Now organized. I showed up my volleyball abilities and then was in charge of making sure the kids didn't kill each other in the big inflatable obstacle course. So much fun but so much work! Some of those little devils went around me so fast, I didn't even have time to stop them from going when it wasn't safe... too much fun. What a day! Very exhausted now, I was trying to show off with Monte by going fast and now I'm paying the prize... We'll see what he writes on his report. I even wore pearl earrings to impress him so he'd write a good "review" about me, ha! I have yet to meet a blogger that's not one of the nicest people out there. Aaron, Jill, Ben, and now Mike, too cool to be in here with them!
So nice to run with you Mike! Good luck this week and enjoy your visit with the family! Going to sleep now... tomorrow is Monday... NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Super busy day... went to a briefing about the future of freight transportation on the new Capitol visitor center, I hadn't been in there, very cool. Good information. Then I came to the office and had to move offices... I have my own office now, with not one but TWO windows, my own round table with two chairs to have meetings... although my nice view of the green trees of Rock Creek Park is gone... I still have a view, but it's mostly of the tops of buildings... The big plus is that it's a lot more quiet, less distracting. In the other office, I could hear my boss on the phone, having conference calls on speaker phone all the time, plus my office mate Hank had to listen to hearings on the TV, plus I could see everyone going into the bathroom and that was distracting. I'm going to miss my office mate though, he's such a nice person, I enjoy our impromptu conversations about anything... he's only a few feet away, but still, it's just not the same. Also today I found out one of my favorite people in the office gave notice, he's leaving in 3 weeks. I don't work directly with him, but he's one of those super smart guys that is also humble and can talk to anyone about anything, very personable. He was also my supplier of girl scout cookies!!! Things are changing so much around here! We had super strong thunderstorms and rain here in the afternoon - I stayed in the office till 7, by then the rain was not so strong so I ran up to the Chevy Chase circle, where Will picked me up cause I didn't want to do too many miles since I have the race Saturday. I love my new route, by the Observatory, the Cathedral, Reno Road which is very green, lots of trees. Very hilly but that's good for me. A good run! |

Four easy miles near my house during lunchtime - very humid out, hot. Hopefully it prepares me for Saturday - last year during the race it was so muggy and hot!
I wonder how I'll do Saturday at the 10k... last year I finished in 48 and change, this year I feel much stronger, but I haven't been doing a lot of speed work... I would be so happy to finish around 46! Last year, a month before the Lawyers Have Heart 10k I ran the Capitol Hill Classic in 50 minutes and change... this year I cut two minutes off that course, finishing in 48 and something... so maybe I'll cut two minutes from LHH too? We shall see... anyone wants to try to guess my time? Don't forget I'll be wearing the beautiful Mexico headband, that should make me a whole lot faster! |

The weather was much better today than last year! Cloudy and hot but not too bad. Woke up early, ran to Eastern Market, picked up my zipcar for the weekend, drove to the office to meet up with my friend Annie - the race was only a few blocks from my office so it was super convenient. Took a few pictures with my super cool Mexico headband....
Annie is a fast girl but not too fast for me, so I thought I'd be able to keep up with her and she could make me run faster... I think it helped. They had two waves for the 10k, one for runners faster than 50 minutes and the other for slower. We felt like studs by getting in front with the fast people, very cool! Annie and I started together but agreed not to run side by side and go our own pace, and if we found each other good if not whatever. We stayed together the first mile, then she started going faster and I couldn't keep up with her. She stayed within sight the entire time though, so I felt good about that. She was my rabbit.
Felt like I was struggling the whole time, but I thought it's because i was going very fast... not quite... After the turnaround I saw my co-worker Mike running a few minutes behind pushing his twin girls whose birthday was today in a stroller, very cool. Made it the first 4 miles and then I told myself I could push super hard and risk fainting, or keep a decent pace and not faint. I chose the latter. Annie was about 50 feet in front of me... She finished in 47:02 and I finished in 47:16. She is training for the Twin Cities marathon in Minnesota, that's where she's from, so maybe we can do some training together since we run similar paces.
Usually I try to hide from the cameras, but this time I wanted to have proof that I ran the whole thing with the headband, yet every time I saw the cameras it was already too late! I think at the very end one of the photographers took some good ones, or so I hope. I looked absolutely ridiculous with it. Thank you Eric :)
So I finished 147 out of 1754 women, and 53rd out of 607 woman in the 30-40 age division. That's within the top 10 percentile, not bad!
Here are some pics.
In this first ones you can see part of my new office and my new orchid which I will probably kill soon...
The second one shows how thrilled I was of having to wear the Mexico headband...
The third one shows fast beautiful girl Annie
So the lesson learned is that I need to taper better for these races so my legs don't get too tired. I guess Eric won the bet, 47 something... everyone else said 46 and change, I think. Sorry to disappoint :( ... but thank you for the support and encouragement!
Sorry about the delay posting this my fans, I took off to go to the beach right after the race, and wanted to get there as soon as possible to enjoy the sun, which I did! I hope you all had a great weekend! I know at least Marion did! |

In Rehoboth Beach, Delaware - drove up yesterday after the race, to my friend Tricia's house. It's her birthday weekend and her parents let her have friends at their beach house. A great group of people, we had too much fun, made great food, ate lots, danced lots, got too much sun, not enough exercise. Weather wasn't too great but could have been worse. Some swimming yesterday too.
Three miles barefoot on the sand, slow, recovery jog. Walked lots on the beach too. Drove back in the evening, traffic wasn't bad thankfully. |

Office to Chevy Chase, 1 hr 06 min - after the rain, I was hoping the air would be nice and light, but it was quite muggy... not too hot though at least. A good run, took it easy. Tried a new route and went through a new neighhborhood in Maryland called Martin's Additions. Beautiful houses, so quiet... very nice.

From Chevy Chase to the office in an absolutely gorgeous morning. Sunny, not too hot, just perfect.
Had some trouble with mid-section cramps... not sure why, I've had a lot of that lately. This morning was worse than before, I had to stop... I wasn't going very fast, and it happened mostly when I was going downhill. Tried slowing down and taking deep belly breaths but didn't work too well. They went away after a few minutes, but still it was not fun.
My route this morning, a little shorter but not as scenic:

Funnest. Race. Ever. Period. Everyone needs to do this race next year.
The Quantico marine base is only open to the public a few times a year, and this was one of them. The 4-mile trail course was super tough, very hilly and difficult. The obstacles were great, there was a tire dash, some hay steeplechase, lots of mudpits to cross, a muddy part of the trail that you had to crawl under a tarp, a steep part that you had to rapel down (that one kind of sucked, it wasn't steep enough), and by the end they had a fire truck with a hose to clean you up.
I ran with my co-workers Hank and Mike, they had a blast too, though we went very slow cause Hank is just back from an injury.
One for the books indeed! |

Biked from Chevy Chase to the office in the morning... was going to run in the evening but I gave in to peer pressure and went to a going away happy hour instead.
I've never been happier to be a biker - You probably have heard by now that two metro trains collided this afternoon, crazy... I cannot imagine being in one of those trains... Hopefully they won't find more victims; it's hard to believe from the pics that only 7 people died in such horrible accident.
Biked home. |

Ran from home to the office - a gorgeous morning, super clear blue skies. Side stitch on the right side bothering, not too bad...
I am so lucky to be able to bike or run to work!
My dad called me this morning, very worried about the metro train collision. I guess they'll never know what happened... the operator either had a heart attack, tried to kill herself and cause the accident, or was very distracted, because it was during the day and she should've been able to react to avoid the collission. So horrible...
Ran home after work, it's getting hot around here...

Ran from home to the office on another gorgeous morning, a little hot. Feeling a bit sluggish, but pushing on... Is there a better commute than a run commute?
Google maps says it's 5.5 miles. It takes me 43-45 minutes (stopping the watch at stop lights), it really doesn't feel like I'm going 8-minute miles at all, so there's something fishy there... |

Biked from Chevy Chase to the office in the morning (10 miles) Ran after work - did the loop that I have labeled as Montelepsy loop (without the excursion to Virginia), down c&o canal to Incline back to Glover park through Dumbarton Oaks. It's a tough, hilly trail so I'm thinking probably about 6 miles.
Biked to the store and got 2 new pairs of trail runningshoes, they had buy one get one 50% off... I'm going to Glacier NP next week to do lots of hiking and backpacking, so I needed them! Let's put it this way: for less than the price I would've paid for a Garmin 405, I got a Garmin 305, two pairs of shoes and a pair of nice socks! |

Boring travel day... that's what sucks about going West, you have to spend an entire day getting there and another getting back...
Will took me to the airport early morning and I left for Missoula. Uneventful flight. My roommate Betsy picked me up from Missoula and we drove to her cousin's house in Kalispell, where we spent the night. I cannot begin to tell you how beautiful that house was. It has a view of the whole city with the mountains in the back... need I say more? Very cool people, very generous. Packed our backpacks for a 2-night, 3-day trip, checked out possible routes, and went to sleep. |

Woke up early and drove to Glacier NP. Went to the backcountry office in the park where they told us about snow conditions (snow in July, yes!) and we figured out a nice 2-night, 3-day trip.
The one-way route started in St. Mary and ends at Two Medicine, so we parked the car at TM and took a shuttle to St Mary.
Thursday, Day 1: 9 flat miles from St. Mary to Red Eagle lake; camp by Red Eagle Lake. Friday, Day 2: 14 difficult miles from RE to Morning Star, via the Triple Divide pass, elevation gain of 3,000 feet; camp at Morning Star lake. Saturday, Day 3: 12 difficult miles from MS to our car in Two Medicine, via Pitamakan pass, 2,000 ft. elevation gain and about the same drop.
Heavy packs, even though we are light-weight campers. Sad that we can't make fires in the park... but after the fires in 2003, it makes sense. I worked in the park in 2003, when almost the entire park burned. The place where I worked, Rising Sun, was the ONLY place that remained open the entire season. All other hotels in the park were closed because of the fires. It was so smokey!
The hike was great, blue skies, beautiful weather. Sad to see everything burned down, it takes so long for the forest to recover! |

| Had some breakfast and left for the next campsite... Very hard day. Almost ran into a moose and saw 6 sheep, three little ones and three adults. Very cute. Got to campsite and jumped into Morning Star Lake - I have pictures to prove it. There was still snow surrounding the lake. It was cold. We were the only ones at that campground that night, which was nice but a bit scary at the same time. |

Happy Independence Day!
A bit of rain in the morning - amazing how fast the weather changes there, it was blue skies and the next thing you know, it's raining. It didn't last long though, and the rest of the hike had great weather. Very difficult hike due to lots of snowfields, but at least there were tracks to follow. Gorgeous gorgeous views, breathtaking, literally! Betsy's achilles is hurting, but she's so tough, she didn't complain much. Finally we made it to the car and jumped into Two Medicine Lake.
We went to get Betsy a nice steak at the famous Cattle Baron steakhouse, I had fish, very good. Then we camped at St. Mary's campground, a bit crowded but it was ok. Fireworks from the town of St Mary's were nice! |

Last day! So sad!
Drove to Logan Pass and hiked the Highline trail to Granite Park Chalet and back down to The Loop trailhead. It was nice not to have to hike with heavy backpacks! We saw tons of mountain goats, one almost killed Betsy, and lots of marmots. Blue skies when we left... we were not following our own advice and didn't carry warm clothes or rain gear... and surely enough, a huge thunderstorm developed right above us as we were hiking down. Amazing how fast it happened... shoud've learned from the day before, right? NOT! Lightning was falling so close, it was scary! Rain and hail... Finally we got to the shuttle stop and took it back to the car in Logan Pass. Drove to Lake McDonald and sat at the shore to write some postcards, then drove back to Kalispell where we stayed the night again at Betsy's cousin's place. Perfect end to a great journey! |

5.2 miles from my house to the office in 47:47... how do I know that? Because I wore my new GARMIN!!! Yeah! I like it... it keeps me entertained so I don't think about how exhausted I am or how hot it is...
I didn't read the manual yet... too anxious to use it... will read it this weekend for sure, don't worry JD!!!
Average pace: 9:12. Don't know how to make it lap every mile yet :)

Fourteen big ones from my house to the Arboretum, around the Arboretum and back home. Beautiful day, just gorgeous, hot but not too hot, sunny... a nice cold breeze... just perfect!
This was probably the best hydrated run of all times. I had a bottle of water before leaving, carried one that drank in the first hour, refilled it when I got to the Arboretum, drank the whole thing, and got a Vitamin Water around mile 9.
Felt really good till about mile 8... then I thought I'd start to get sluggish so I decided to go back to the visitor center and get a vitamin water. So after that I felt good again.
Average pace, exactly 10 min/miles... which is what I suspected. Average heart rate: 168 bpm. Not quite sure what that means, will have to do more research on that. 1,446 calories burned, really? That seems a bit too much...
Laps (thanks for the tip Jun!) 10:24, 11:07, 9:52, 9:32, 9:47, 9:04, 10:06, 9:32, 10:22, 10:06, 10:21, 9:40, 9:48, 10:05.
It was nice knowing the distance, and nice to confirm that I do indeed 10 min miles on my long runs...
Obviously, I dropped my Garmin when I was taking it off... still works... I knew this would happen! I can't find the manual either... I am the worse!
Can't wait to see how April did on her race, not sure who else was racing... fun!
I am not sure if I should do that very hilly half marathon in july 26... I did it last year and it was fun, but it's not a course where you can PR. I have never "raced" a relatively flat half marathon, but I can't really find any around. There's another one in September that is very hilly as well... I should probably run them, just to get in better shape, even if I can't PR or get a good idea of what I can do in Marine Corps...
Happy weekend! |

Went to Annapolis with Will - beautiful day, a bit humid but not bad. Rode 13.7 miles on the Annapolis/Baltimore trail, soooo nice! Rode back to the car and went back home to do some studying and watch the Tour de France. Very exciting!
Average heart rate: 155 bpm, with the last 3 miles at over 175 bpm.
Average speed: not sure, I had it set up for running so it says 4:05 min/mile... so that's 14.8 miles per hour, I guess... I'm still not sure how the Garmin counts pauses or when you stop.... need to look it up.
What a nice day to end a great weekend. |

Biked from Chevy Chase to the office on the Capitol Crescent trail. Another great day. Will came with me the first 5-ish miles and went back home. I was able to catch a fast guy and hang behind him so he was breaking the wind, ha!

:)
Thinking of running on lunch break cause I have school after work... not sure if that will work out... but I feel good about my fitness level, and I have so much to do for work and school, I feel I need to get my priorities straight and do more efficient runs instead of more miles... we shall see...

I have a race this evening, the Bastille Day 4-miler. Last year I ran 3 miles slowly to the start line, ran the race, and ran back to the office... This year I'd like to get a PR so maybe I should bike to the start line instead, or at least bike 2 miles and run only 1 mile as a warm-up? Thoughts?
I ran it in 30:57 last year, 7:44 min/miles... I'd like to do 7:30 min/miles this year...
-----------------
Too busy at work, couldn't get out in time to make it to the race. Didn't even have time for a proper lunch, so it probably was a good idea not to run it. Very upsetting. Got off finally at 7 pm, went for a run on the "Montelepsy loop". Feeling very sluggish, but pushed on. Garmin of course doesn't account for elevation or for difficult trails, so it shows a very slow pace. Don't care. Made it back to the office and biked to Chevy Chase. |

I got pink eye! Ughhh... Will and my co-workers are freaked out... I'm wondering if I should skip school? I've had pink eye many, many times and nobody in my family or housemates ever got it... Got some eye drops and feel better already.
Biked to the office in the morning and in the middle of the way my bike broke down! Something shifted in the derrailour and I have no idea why, it didn't look like it should have been able to move, and I couldn't move it back! Someone stopped and couldn't figure it out either. Finally we were able to get it to work very clumsily, I had to keep a thumb on the button that changes the gears and it made a lot of noise cause the chain rubbed against the derrailour thingy, so I looked ridiculous and was going very slow, but at least I made it to work in time...
Too busy at work for a lunchtime run... Will attempt to run home after school tonight... should I go to school, seriously? Didn't go to school, didn't run, just did nothing, feeling blahhhhh |

| What a beautiful day! Ran to the office the long way to pick up my bike to go biking with Will tomorrow - from there I did a loop I used to do when I was married and lived in Cleveland Park... Dumbarton Oaks park to Glover Park up to Wisconsin, Marvin Hazen trail to Rock Creek, down all the way back to the office... it's about 9 miles, according to my Garmin, 10 counting some detours I took. I went slow, cause the trails are very rooty and rocky. I had several falls there before... and I had a very close call this time, but thankfully I didn't fall. There was a biking accident on the trail, people go too fast on that turn, I don't know what happened but when I got there, I saw some blood on the trail (paved bike trail) and a guy was on the floor on the side of the trail, several people were around and had called 911... It gave me chills and I almost started to cry, thinking he may have to go through what my ex-husband went through... I saw a helmet next to him, so I'd hope he didn't hurt his head, and I heard people say he was breathing and he had a sip of water someone offered him, so at least he didn't seem to be unconscious. Scary stuff... Felt good most of the time, but went very slow. I hydrated very well, I think, had some very watered-down G2 on the way to the office, some watered-down vitamin water on the first 10 miles, stopped at a 7-eleven to fill my bottle with ice and got another gatorade for the last 5 miles, a good plan overall. I almost wonder if it's worth running with my own water bottle during the marathon, it's nice not having to stop to drink, and being able to drink a few zips here and there instead of having to gulp a glass every few miles... probably not worth the effort? This was not a very good week... I'm glad it's over. Tuesday I will do speed work I WILL DO SPEEDWORK ON TUESDAY! Happy Saturday!

Will was on his mountain bike, so he was working a lot harder than me, I liked that! Hank's bike has cages on the pedals. I was trying to figure out how his gears worked and the chain got screwed up, so the bike stopped and I got one foot out of the cage but not the other, so I slowly fell on my side. Funny stuff! We watched the Tour de France afterwards. So much drama! We'll see what happens this week. So exciting! |

Lots of hills. Rained lots. Was hoping to do 1:46 but with the longer course and the hills, that wasn't possible. Everyone was talking after the race about how difficult the course was. Some of the top runners were saying they finished 5 or 10 minutes slower than in their flat halves.
Started slow and a lot of people past me, but I caught up around mile 3 when I warmed up, and I passed at least 4 girls in the last 3 miles and was able to hold the speed even though it was super hilly. The worst part was that we went downhill the first 3 miles, knowing we'd have to come back up them in the last 3 miles... yikes!
Splits:
1 - 8:36 2 - 8:17 3 - 7:50 4 - 8:03 5 - 8:03 6 - 7:58 7 - 8:38 (must've stopped for water) 8 - 8:08 9 - 8:09 10 - 7:51 11 - 7:43 12 - 8:24 13 - 8:11
I looked at my watch at 13.1 and it said 1:46... bummer on the longer course!!! On the positive side, I beat my friends Chris and John. ha ha ha ha! (evil laughter).
Pretty happy overall - if I had not had that pint of ice cream last night I may've done even better. Lots of cool people on the finish line. I love this race! Now I really want to find a flat half marathon to see what I can do!
Happy Sunday bloggers!
-------------------
Official results: I got 12th girl (out of 236), 1:48:56, and apparently 2nd in my age group (though it looks like they screw that up and I may be 3rd; either way I'll take it!) Last year I finished 17th girl, although my time was 1:48:30, so I think there was some improvement, maybe. |

Biked to the office and will bike home after school. No running. No remorse. Have a bit of plantar fasciitis on my left heel so i'm going to do lots of cross-training this week.
Two hilarious pics from yesterday's race...
First: here I am posing as Schwartzenegger's daughter... seriously, are those really my arms??? I know I was flexing the muscles on purpose, but those are some serious arms... I look like a man for crying out loud! Note to self: wear shirts with sleeves next time...

The second one is even funnier because I wasn't posing! I was just complaining to the volunteers about the course being long, that was about .4 miles from the finish line and I was not happy that I wasn't getting an "official" PR. My face and hand say it all!

Biked to the office from Bethesda, super fast!
If you think Bonnie is nice on the blog, wait till you get to meet her in person! I dare you to find a nicer girl - you won't! She radiates positive energy, which is very rare to find in people these days (though this blog is an exception!)
I can't think of a better person to pace me in the marathon this fall (though the way my training is going, I don't know if it'll be a good idea to run it)
I stayed in the office until 9 pm to put out a fire that started at 5 pm and had to be dealt with before my boss leaves on vacation tomorrow. No running, no working on my paper, not happy...

Ran with Bonnie! Had dinner with Montelepsy! Running friends rock!
Biked to Chevy Chase after dinner.
My boss gave me back the newsletter that I write every week and he edits, with almost no changes!!! Usually when he gives it back he has something to say about EVERYTHING I write and wants to change the whole thing, but this time, it was almost perfect!
What a great day! |

Technology is just not my friend today... Couldn't do remote work from my laptop from home and couldn't install my statistical software package (Eviews for those interested) so I had to metro to the office. Did some work and went for a run to Fletcher's and back, super nice day here. Going to do some more work and bike home - our office IT guy responded to my e-mail asking about the remote connection very fast, what great heart that guy has, so now I should be able to work from my house tonight. He's actually training for the Marine Corps too, and I'm sort-of his coach. It's pretty cool, now there are 5 people in the office that are getting into running and ask me questions or tell me about their runs every once in a while. Allison even started running home from the office some days, I let her borrow my pack (Nathan Intensity) to try it out and she loved it so she's going to buy one (hopefully soon cause I need mine!) so she can run home. It's all about runnin'!
Productive day but still a lot of work to do tonight and tomorrow. |

| Second weekend in a row without a long run... I was so stressed about my paper today that I had to work on it all day till I felt better about it - finished around 8 pm and went out to the Lincoln Memorial and back, 10 minute miles, exactly 1 hr 20 min. A hot and humid night, but the worst part were the little tiny bugs everywhere that get in your eyes... so annoying! Felt pretty good throughout, though left heel hurts a little - icing now... maybe it's time for new shoes, it can't hurt to try...

Hottttt! Biked to the office in the morning and ran home the long way in the HOT afternoon. 10 min mines, feeling sluggish.
I don't think I'll be able to qualify for Boston in 2 months. I just haven't had consistent training or done the work and don't have the base. And that is ok. Better to do things right. I'm probably going to do a couple of Yasso workouts on Thursday to see where I stand, what my predicted marathon time is, and if it's too far from my goal I'll keep building my base and qualify on a different marathon.
On other news, Bart Yasso is coming to a DC running store so I'll get to meet him tomorrow, and run with him!!! I am psyched!!! |

A fabulous little running event by Runner's World and Saucony - went down to the Saucony van, only 5-6 blocks away from my office, after work - they were doing short stride analysis (and of course recommending a Saucony shoe for you), then if you tried the shoe they recommended you got free socks! Woohoo! We also got a free copy of Bart Yasso's book, and of course I asked him to sign mine. Pictures coming! He seems like a cool dude, really. He told me he had ran in Buenos Aires and climbed the Aconcagua, and that it was so hard to follow a vegetarian diet when he was down there - don't I know it! He would ask for a piece of pizza with no meat and they would give him a slice with ham - that's not meat! haha... It's like my mom when I tell her mom, remember I don't eat meat, and she says "this is not meat, it's chicken!"
He talked a bit about his experience in Badwater 146 in 1989, when less than 20 people were into ultrarunning... he said now it's acceptable to walk, but back then they thought they had to run the entire time! Too funny.
Ran with the group, 5 miles, made it in 40 minutes, felt pretty good. Biked home. |

A very loose attempt to a Yasso workout... I read some stuff online about it and the fabulous Bonnie gave me some tips too. I tried to set it up on my garmin so I wouldn't have to go to a track because I don't like the idea of running in circles... so I went to the C&O canal, warmed up for 20 minutes (may be too long?) - my right calf felt super tight, but I didn't want it to stop me. My stomach felt queezy but I didn't want to let that stop me either. I had to go to the bathroom too... but I figured I could wait. So, I have to do it again when my calf feels better, when my tummy doesn't hurt, and when I don't have to go to the bathroom...
I set the garmin to beep after 20 minutes and start the 6 repeats, 0.5 mile, then 4 minute rest, etc. I should've done what Bonnie said and do 0.5 mile instead, but I have a feeling that would've been more... the actual Yasso I think is supposed to be a rest time equal to the time it took you to run the 800. Anyway, I rested 4 minutes in between repeats - results (drumroll please)
3:54:06 |
3:26:29 |
3:28:58 |
3:27:21 |
3:34:33 |
3:58:00 |
Average: 3:38:14 |
The stuff I read says you're supposed to do 10 repeats.... I don't think I could've done 10 of them - but this was also my first time and it seems I went out a little too fast on some of them - maybe if I slowed down a little bit, once I know my rhythm, I can do 10 at that pace.
So, for those of you not familiar with the Yasso 800, they're supposed to predict your marathon time. If you can run sets of 800 meters at an average of 2 min 30 seconds, your marathon time translates into 2 hours 30 minutes. So, if Yasso is correct (and apparently it's quite accurate), I am in shape for a 3 hour 38 min marathon. This is quite encouraging... so maybe if I do some good workouts in the next 2 months and if I'm consistent with my training, I can qualify for Boston, or at least be close. Next Wednesday is my last class this semester, then I have a couple of weeks off and the new semester starts after Labor Day... Classes next semester should be easier, but I am taking 2...
After the workout I ran back to the office, picked up my backpack and ran a couple more miles to the metro and metroed back - I didn't want to run too much since in the last 2 weeks I haven't been very consistent, I don't want to risk injury.
As always I welcome your suggestions and thoughts!
Oh - here's my pic with Bart Yasso!

Lunchtime run, not too hot outside, nice! Did my Bonnie route, a bit past Fletcher's and back to the office, average pace 9:08 min/mile - I was aiming for 9:30 so I'll take it! Felt great the whole time. Don't you love those days?
Biked to the office and will bike home after our make-up class. |

| Very nice morning = 87 degrees, sunny. Warmed up with my neighbor's dog who I am taking care of this weekend - he's a hound so he wants to sniff everything... not really too fond of running, but a very cute dog nevertheless. Then I ran from home to the office, feeling good. I felt like I could run a little faster than 10 min/miles for about 16-18 miles... but fate had different plans... After a pit stop at the office and refill of G2 with ice, I left for the C&O Canal, and from there to the Capitol Crescent Trail - the plan was to go past Bethesda and then come back on the metro. But at about mile 11 I started feeling fainty - a very strange feeling. I kept hydrated, I thought, the entire time. I didn't feel hungry... it wasn't lack of energy - not sure what it was. I was going a little faster than usual, but 9:30 miles vs. 10:00 miles couldn't make that much of a difference, especially in such flat trails. Anyway - I took some walking breaks and made it to the metro - I had to sit on the yucky metro station floor because I couldn't stay up... I got some newspapers so I could get a seat on the metro, hoping it wouldn't be too crowded that other riders had to smell me... Vision blurry and feeling queezy the entire ride home. Now I'm feeling better, but not sure what happened there... I hate those days! |

Wasn't going to run till the evening but Ashley wanted to go at lunch - I can't say no to Ashley, she's too much fun to miss. It was very hot and I think she got really dehydrated... good run nevertheless, though we went by the White House and through some crowded streets... Biked to the office this morning... Probably will run to Will's house this evening... I learned two new words/phrases today... "What's your Achilles tendon?" = name your biggest weakness "Boondogle" = the leather things the Boy Scouts wear around their necks - OR a wasteful project... -------------- Ran to Chevy Chase circle in the evening, Will picked me up from there - it was HOT and HUMID and HILLY and HORRIBLE ... the 4H! Felt pretty good...

From Will's place to the office in the morning. 4H! Legs feeling very tired... Average pace: 9:15 Man, that route seems hillier every time I do it! Or maybe it's the heat and humidity... My colleague Mike was coming back from his run as I was walking into the office. His training for Marine Corps is going well, I helped him modify a novice guide from Hal Gigdon to fit his schedule better, cause he's also a commuter biker and he has two young and active twin girls. He asked me how to get more energy during long runs so I told him about the gu... he said this weekend he had 3 gu's during his 15 mile run... hmmm.... that seems a bit excessive to me but I don't think it can hurt him, right? Plan on biking to school after work and then home.
Happy running bloggers!

Biked to the office from home, worked all day non-stop, then worked on my final paper for the class which is ughhhhh soooo confusing! I always thought I was a numbers person, but this class (Microeconometrics) is proving I am not - I have a newly found respect for the Bonnies of the world... Biked home after work but no running. Left heel hurts a lot more than it has in a long time (plantar fasciitis). Icing it all day. Planning on running on the (ugh) treadmill tomorrow night to see if it helps. Wish me luck with my final paper, I really need it... |

Biked to the office in the morning, worked my butt off all day non-stop, finished my paper, sent it in, and thought about all my options... it was already 8 pm so running and then biking home was going to take a while... so I filled my big pack with my stuff and ran home. Boy was that pack heavy! I did 10 min-miles nevertheless, so I was pretty happy. Weirdly enough the heel doesn't bug me that much when I run, it's mostly after - I think that's a common symptom of plantar... I'm going to look for new shoes next week, both my newest pairs have done a combined almost 800 miles and that doesn't count a lot of walking, biking, etc. I've done in them... Let's hope that helps. I'm free from school for a couple of weeks, that feels really good. Hopefully I'll pass the Microeconometrics class. Next week I'm going to Colorado with Will to do a lot of biking in the Denver/Colorado Springs and Fort Collins area and visit some friends, I can't wait!
Have a great weekend everyone! |

Zero... lazy weekend - first weekend without school so you'd think I'd be motivated to run... nope... Hosted the girls to brunch with creme brulee french toast, delicious... walked with the girls to Eastern Market. Back home to prepare a frozen cheesecake to take to a pizza party but it didn't freeze in time, so I brought another ice cream instead... Went to a pizza party that turned out to be an engagement party for a friend, it was really cute.

| To Fletcher's Boathouse after work, and back. Ran (literally) into my friend Ileana, also a runner, who did the Muddy Buddy with me back in 2006 - she's getting back into running after a long pause, she's done several marathons but I don't think she ever broke 5 hours, and is not interested in getting faster either. A fun girl though. Went very slow with her. Metroed home. |

| Ahhhhhh Colorado! The air smells fresh and cool... Flew into Denver, got there around noon - picked up rental car and went back to the airport to pick up Will, who was on a different flight cause he has free miles or something. Then we both had the same thing in mind: let's bike! Drove to Boulder and picked up rental bikes at a great shop, Will got a mountain bike because of his foot problem and I got a road bike. Then we were off to Left Turn Canyon or something like that... A beautiful ride, steep, not too many cars. Will was going super slow, huffing and puffing and I was making fun of him, riding circles around him on my cool fast road bike, taking pictures of him. We did about 12 miles, 6 up and 6 down, 1,500 ft elevation gain according to Garmin. Then Will exchanged his mountain bike for a road bike, risking foot issues... While he was doing this, I sneaked a 5-mile run in a trail that goes by a creek, close to downtown Boulder. Sooooo beautiful! Runners, bikers, walkers... such a nice day.... nice weather - feeling great. Then a nice dinner - yummm!

| Woke up and drove from Boulder to Estes Park... We stopped mid-way to do a ride around Lyons that was in Will's cycling book. We went up about 5 miles, then all the way down, 1,400 ft elevation change. Then we drove to Estes Park. Sooooooo beautiful!!! It was very cloudy but we were just happy to be there... We went straight to Rocky Mountain National Park to do a big ride - but the storms were very close... We went anyway, hoping for the best. Went up about 6 miles, a very difficult slow ascent... then there was lightning very close to us, so we decided to turn around and went down the mountain. It got cold very fast and it started to rain.... it was kind of cool, felt very hard core. Going down with the cold wind and the rain hitting your face and hands. Then we checked into our beautiful little cabin by a river just outside the park and drove to Estes. Will went shopping or something, and I went for a nice run. 6.65 miles in 1:02 around the lake in Estes Park. Didn't want to push it cause I was worried about the elevation change, but felt very good. Sunny... sooooo beautiful, mountains all around us. Had dinner at the St. Mary's lodge and headed back to the cabin.

Ok, so this was our BIG ride - one of the hardest rides in Will's cycling book - it says cyclist use it as training ground for the Tour de France. I didn't think we could make it, but we did. My quads were burning. It was up, up, up, up, up, sooooo steep, for 17 miles. Almost 4,000 ft elevation gain, Garmin says 4,900 total ascent. It took us 2 hours 20 minutes to get to the top, including a few short stops to take pics and have a snack. It felt like the top of the world - such a great feeling to do something like that. I never thought I could do it. We took some pics at the top, saw lots of elk and a couple of big horn sheep next to the road, and headed back down - the downhill was so fast, it took us less than 1 hour. Then we realized we didn't have our camera! We had either dropped it somewhere, or left it at one of the stops... we hope a good person saw it and took it to the ranger station to the lost and found... soooo sad! It wasn't a good camera at all, but the pictures were priceless! No running today for obvious reasons. A good meal and to rest!

Checked out of the cabin and went to the ranger station to fill out a lost and found report. Got a cheap disposable camera.
Then we went on a 10-mile hike to a beautiful lake. Then we drove up the mountain to take "fake" pictures because Will wanted them (I couldn't care less, it's not the pic that counts but the moment!). Then we decided to take the "scenic" way from there to Fort Collins, not realizing it was a REALLY long way. Took us several hours and we both got in a very bad mood. The scenery was gorgeous, and we stopped to look at two moose in a creek on the side of the road. Finally we made it to Fort Collins, to my friend's house. It was good to see him and his dog Roxanne - He was my boss in 2003 when I was the front desk manager at Rising Sun in Glacier NP and we became good friends. He has a congenital disease and is losing his sight slowly, and he has a knee problem so he can barely walk. And he doesn't take care of himself so he's overweight, which doesn't help. So it's hard to help him out... getting a white cane won't do much because he can't walk much. Getting a scooter won't help because he can't see where he's going. It makes me very sad... He is dealing with it so well, I can't imagine what it would feel like. Spent the night at my friend's house.

| Alright, now to the best part! Woke up at 7 am to a beautiful morning in Fort Collins, planning on a 20-mile run, having eaten only a banana and a granola bar for breakfast. Took my little pack with water and nuun, and a gatorade. Went all over the trail system in Fort Collins - sooooooo beautiful, sooooo great! It was the best long run EVER. Felt great the entire time, no pain whatsoever. Then around mile 18 I got lost and ended up doing 2 miles longer than I wanted to - the last 2 miles I slowed waaaay down cause I didn't want to over do it, they were 11 and 12-min miles, so I wouldn't really count them... still including those two slow miles the average pace was 9:40, so maybe without them the average would be even better! Eventually I found my way back to my friend's house and met up with Bart, went to a great brunch, and Will picked me up (he had biked in the morning in the hills around Ft. Collins). and we drove back to Boulder, returned the bikes, had some food, and drove to Denver, we stayed near the airport to catch an early flight tomorrow... sooooo sad the trip is over!!!

| Biked to the office - got new shoes at the running store during lunch. Did the modified Montelepsy loop, going up on the Glover Park trail then back on the c&o canal. I felt like I was pushing the pace pretty good and going fast, but it was a trail and gets steep and rocky so you can't go too too fast... Average 9:30, with the last 2.5 miles at 8:30 pace. To get a 3:40 marathon I need to average a bit better than 8:30 minute miles. With less than 2 months to go, it's pretty clear that's not going to happen. I have a 1/2 marathon September 13, it's a bit hilly and on a bike path so not a great indication, but if I don't do 1:45 or better I'm going to forget about getting a BQ at Marine Corps and just run it to see how I do. Maybe after training for 3-4 months I can try the National Marathon here in February or March. |

Nada - volunteered with Keen playing with kids in the swimming pool. I helped another volunteer with a new kid, Michael, who could not walk but could move his legs a little and splash. He seemed to have fun for a while, but then he got too cold. Thankfully he could speak reasonably well, so we could tell that's what he was feeling. So we helped him out of the pool and warmed him up and his dad came down and we chatted for a while. What nice people. He told us his daughter (Michael's sister) became a physical therapist so that she could teach her brother to walk. Unfortunately he couldn't despite many efforts, but she still helps him move a bit and helps others, I'm sure. I think what these kids need the most is human touch; most people don't know that they need to be treated like other kids. He seemed so happy when we were rubbing his arms to warm him up. Before he left I gave him a big hug and kissed him on the cheek and he gave me the biggest smile I've ever seen. I can't tell you how that made my day. |

So so so so so so so happy - when the race pics come out I'm going to look so ridiculous, with a huge smile as if I had won the oscar or something... too funny.
Going into the race I did not feel confident that I could reach my goal of 1:45. My last half marathon, 2 months ago, was 1:48. But, I thought I'd try and keep an 8-min mile pace for as long as I could and see how it went.
Started out waaaay too fast. I felt good, so I thought I could hold a sub-8 min pace for a while... so I think the first 6 miles were all close to 7:45. Around mile 8 I started to feel the crash. Oh yea, I should've started slower... It's hard to pace yourself when you're running in a narrow bike trail the whole time, miles 1-4 were pretty crowded, then it thinned out.
So I was pretty much cruising till mile 8 when I started feeling like I was going to die and thought I was going to have to stop and walk the rest of the way. But I kept pushing. I wanted to cry. I kept looking at the volunteers asking for their mercy. Nothing. Mile 11 was the big hill - I thought I was going to pass out. Miles 12 and 13 were on the Capitol Crescent Trail, where I run all the time. So I knew the end was near. But it didn't make me feel better. I knew I was ahead of pace, so I could slow down - but I felt like I was running 10-min miles... so I kept pushing... I thought how embarrassing would be to be one of those girls who have to be taken in an ambulance.... the horror... Then the tunnel - I can make it, I can make it, it's almost over... Then the last 200 yards, the finish line is right there!!! And look at the clock, it says 1:44... no freaking way!!! If that was the clock time, my chip time was better than that? Yeah! So I sprinted to the finish. So excited. So happy. So tired. Had to sit down and keep my head down cause I felt like I was really going to faint. Got food, water, felt better. Saw my friend Brent, he did pretty good, 1:48. Saw my co-worker Matt, who couldn't run because he was sick, and his wife, then we walked to the finish line to wait for our co-worker Mike. He finished in 2:15, I think, his first half marathon and he hasn't been training that well in the past 2 weeks. He has twin girls, 2.5 years old, and another baby on the way, so he probably doesn't have a lot of time on his hands!
After the race we all went to get brunch. A happy day.

Seven miles at the C&O Canal after work, gorgeous day - went slow. Felt good.
If you've been following my blog for a while, you may remember my house was broken into in March of 08, they came in through a latch on the roof above the bathroom, stole my laptop, two pairs of jeans, some cash, and went out the front door with my car keys, took my car, crashed it someplace and totaled it, and I recovered nothing cause I had only liability insurance and no renters insurance.
Well, dejavu! Last night I came home from work and behold, someone pushed in a window a/c unit from the front ground floor of the house, the entire window went down but didn't break, and they seem to have stolen only my laptop and some jewelry my roommate has. They took my roommate's car keys but didn't take her car, maybe cause they got scared someone was watching, or maybe they didn't know how to drive a stick...
Fun times.
Thankfully nobody was hurt. Still, it makes me so mad that a bunch of 16 year old kids go around terrorizing the neighborhood breaking into homes and stealing things that people work so hard to get, and even when they get caught the police can't do anything because they're minors. So frustrating!
Happy Monday bloggers! |

Biked to the office, after work ran on the c&o canal to Glover park and up the trail for a few miles, then back down. Trail running is hard! lots of roots and rocks... miracle I didn't get hurt. Lots of ups and downs, fun. Legs felt tired at first but after they had warmed up they were ok. Biked home. |

| Could this day be more beautiful? I don't think so. Absolutely perfect. Studied and cleaned up in the morning and went out around 2 pm - went down the mall to Hains Point, it's not the same now that the awesome sculpture"the awakening" is gone... then back out, over the 14th st. bridge (aka broken jaw bridge), on the Mt. Vernon trail to Rosslyn, cross the bridge and back home the long way. Felt GREAT. Took some G2 in my little backpack and drank it along the way, and had 2 blocks around mile 10. I was able to sprint the last few miles; the average was 9:30 min/miles, which is what I was shooting for. Now off to my Indian friend's indian foodfest, then to my Turkish friend's birthday. As much as I miss the mountains, it's so cool to have friends from all different cultures and nationalities here! Have a great weekend everyone! |

| Ran one mile to the metro, then one mile to the office from the metro, then 6 miles to Fletcher's boathouse at lunch. Nice not having to do an evening run, but in the mornings I've been feeling tired and sick, sore throat... Ran the last 2 miles at marathon pace - I read that it's good to do a few miles at marathon pace when you train so you get used to the breathing and the feeling. Let me tell you, I didn't feel like I could hold that pace for 26.2 miles... we shall see...

Feeling sick - a weird cold, usually I get sinus congestion and lots of discharge from the nose... this time it started with a sore throat and post-nasal dripping, and it went all straight to the chest, so I'm trying to cough up phlegm but it won't come out! :( To Fletcher's boathouse and back to the office after work. TGIF!!!

Cold getting worse... wish I could stay home and rest but had to volunteer at one of the exchanges for the Ragnar Relay ... cold and rainy, probably didn't help me get better... a bad week, with only 1 month till marathon day, I should run 20 miles tomorrow but I'm too sick - hopefully I'll feel better during the week - maybe I can take Wednesday off and do the 20 miles... Next weekend is the Army 10-miler. Another option would be to run 10 miles before the ATM, but I was hoping to get a 10-mile PR... though it's hard on a race as big as that one.... what to do, what to do... any suggestions welcome...
Writing this on Sunday, cold is worse, nose stuffed up, chest congested, sinuses hurt... coughing green stuff from my lungs... I usually get head colds so I'm not sure if it means something that it's in the chest this time... I'll probably run but not 20 miles, for sure. |

Still not feeling well and coughing a lot, so I stayed and worked from home. Went for a 5-mile run on the Mall and felt ok but not great - maybe a little worse than yesterday. Then I came back home and saw an e-mail from my office saying a colleague was confirmed with a case of H1N1 flu... poor girl! She went to Los Angeles last week to be in Jeopardy! We were all so excited for her - but probably she got it on one of the flights... hopefully she'll recover quickly.
--------
Tuesday: Since I didn't have a fever I wasn't worried, but then I saw on the center for disease control's website that there have been cases of the flu when fever is not present... so I'm going to see my doctor today just in case - I feel a bit worse today than Monday...
I haven't seen Will since last Wednesday; I don't want to make him sick so I agree that he should'nt come see me, and he's been asking if I need anything... I know he would help me out if I needed something, but even when I don't, I wish he thought of a way to be here for me... bring me juice or leave flowers on my front steps... even an e-card... I guess there's a reason why I'm not married, I've been brainwashed by the romantic comedy industry... sigh... |

Still sick but manageable... I decided last night that I was going to take it nice and slow. So, I ran 5 miles from home to the start line at the Pentagon, met up with my buddy Mike from work to give him his bib, then we went to try and find a bathroom... they had like thousands of porta potties but there was so many people, the lines were still huge. We find one that had a pretty short line. Then we headed to the start line, he had a green bib because he totally made up his expected finish time when he registered. I really wish people in races lined up by their true pace, it'd make the world a much better place. We started with the first wave, it was so crowded... His goal (or my goal that I imposed him) was to do 10 min miles all the way, so we ran together the whole way. Mike is one of those guys who can get lazy, but if you push him a little he responds. He did really good - when we ran the cherry blossom 5k this spring he almost passed out after trying to do 10-min miles, this time he was so much better! He's doing his first marathon at Marine Corps, and I've been helping him out with tips. I think we met our goal but I haven't seen the official results yet.
After the race I saw some friends and chatted a bit, then I ran home - I was able to pick up the pace to 9 min miles for the last 5 miles, so that was good. Now to study away! |

| Hiked Old Rag Mountain with Will - gorgeous day. Lots of people on the trail, so we decided to go "Against the current", counterclockwise instead of clockwise. Wise decision! At the top, some people coming up from the other side told us there had been an accident at one of the narrow spots and everyone was stranded without being able to keep going. A woman fell and hurt her head... we didn't see her though, hopefully it wasn't serious. We saw the search and rescue crew coming up when we were coming down. 9 miles total. |

Feeling good... I wonder how I'll do on Sunday! If I want to do 3:40 I need to do 8:27 miles... so on marathon day I'll try to keep that speed for as long as I possibly can... I've been re-reading some of your blog posts on marathons you've ran... Bonnie, Kelli, Jeff, Mister and Mrs. Fit, Teena, Luz, Sasha, Josse, Michelle... some of you all managed to beat some serious obstacles and had great races, BQs or PRs... So maybe I can too! |

Sorry to disappoint you guys...
Cruising till about the 1/2 way point, then got some really bad side stitches. The first time I had to walk for a few minutes. Then I had to slow down several times. I tried breathing in deeply through my nose and exhaling through my mouth. Didn't work. Then my stomach felt really full, as if I had been taking too much water. But I felt thirsty! Took clif blocks along the way and then I didn't want them cause I felt so full. Then around mile 17 I felt like I was lacking energy, so I took a gel. Used the bathroom but it didn't really help. Then I was sooooo thirsty crossing the bridge! I could not wait till the next water stop! I got some water there, but I was still thirsty! The entire mile on Crystal City I really wanted water! Sometimes people have water for runners even though they're not the official water stations, but this time, nothing... Finally it got there. Got some gatorade and some water. Felt better, but by then it was mile 24 already.
I really need to get the right water/nutrition combination down next time. And train better.
Thank you all for the encouragement! Now shower and food |

Took the whole week off... felt ok but too much work. It's hard to get used to having to drive to work and back... yuck... I need to figure out the best route and the best time of day to go and get back... they're doing construction all over the place, plus some streets and the rock creek parkway is one-way during the morning and another way during the evening... so I have to check the clock and know these things before I take one route or another... ughhh...
I'm so used to my commute being a productive part of the day... I guess I'll get used to driving too.
NPR at least is always interesting...
