Beautiful morning in Assateague. Woke up at dawn and went for a run on the bike path, then took off shoes and went back to camp barefoot on the sand. Again my run was cut short though, this time because I forgot my glide and started getting chafing between my legs and it hurt. Ughhhh... I'm also not sure how good it was to run in the sand, I started having some pain... It was a beautiful day though, and 8 miles isn't so bad.

Woken up by my crazy cat Salem at 5... ughhh... Went for a recovery run for 50 minutes around my neighborhood, down Capitol Hill, up the hill, and back around the neighborhood, very, very slow - having some random pains in my knees and shins, but nothing to worry about. Just took it easy and stretched and they were mostly gone. Felt better after I was warmed up but decided not to go too far. I need to build up more distance in my daily runs though!

Ran in to work in the morning. Got new shoes last night, some Asics again... I get calluses right where the big toe starts, where bunions would form, but other than that I like the shoes a lot. I'll try wearing those, maybe putting on some moleskin to see if it helps with the calluses, and hope that the new shoes will help with the shin splints...

On a personal note, though I am very happy about being able to run as much as I have been lately without much effort, I haven't been able to keep my eating habits under control, and that is very frustrating. I am disappointed at myself! Why is it so easy for me to exercise, bike, run, etc., but I can't get my eating under control? I have no desire to drink alcohol, eat greasy food or meat, but I just can't say no to sweets, candy bars, cookies... and there are a lot around at work and in the house... I am generally a pretty healthy eater - I'm a vegetarian, I eat a lot of good cereal, grains, beans, tofu, eggs, lots of fruits and vegetables... but I get tempted very easily when my office mates eat junk food, and also when I come home and my roommate makes good desserts...  I'm an emotional eater mainly, and I've been busy and a bit stressed lately about work and school and life in general. I need to learn to not eat when I feel stressed! Currently I am 140 lbs, and for a 5'7.5" big-boned girl that is not unhealthy or anything, but I know if I want to run faster, losing 10-15 lbs. will help my knees work a lot better, and it will make me feel better too! Ok, no more ramblings on that... sharing makes the problem more real and makes me more responsible for my actions...

I plan on running around here another 5 miles this afternoon, or run back home. It's a nice day here in DC.

Ran back home after work, in the pouring rain - a bit faster this time, but still with backpack so not very fast

Well, I didn't get to run the 10 miles I was planning... The storm outside was just too strong, and I thought it'd be dangerous to keep running, but I did ran home from work the long way. It took me a long time to warm up, but the last few miles I got to pick up the pace a bit. I love being that crazy runner out in the rain, on the empty DC streets! I got to se a huge tree down by the volleyball courts by the river, it's crazy to think that a few minutes before a lightening bulb was right there! Insane!

Ran to work in the morning, the long way, so I could take a picture of the fallen tree on the volleyball courts. Beautiful day in DC after a terrible storm last night, though very hot and humid. I'm planning to run back home tonight the short way and make it an 11 mile day. I like doubles a lot, but I think I also need to have a few days with 10-mile runs at once.

Ran home from work in the hot and humid DC afternoon. Felt great!

Ran to work from home, the short way, slow (46 minutes total, without stopping my watch for red lights, traffic, etc.) Very humid out, cloudy, hot but not as hot as it's going to get very soon!

Shins bother considerably... I need to do more stretches, massage, and ice...

Ran three easy miles to volunteer at one of the water stops of the Race for the Cure run/walk, and back after the race. Since it's a short race and a very crowded one, I didn't want to run it, but still wanted to be part of it. My mom is a breast cancer survivor, so this race has a special meaning for me. It was quite emotional to see so many people rallying for a cause.

I also wanted to be there because my co-worker Shannon was doing her first 5k. She's so cute - she asked me for training advice, so I tried to help her out as I could. Now she says she's really loving to run and wants to do a 10 miler this fall - that's very exciting. I didn't get to see Shannon but I spotted another co-worker, Liz, through the crowd and was able to cheer for her.

The weather here is getting really, really nasty... it was very humid and hot today, and tomorow it's only going to get worse. I'm hoping I can beat laziness and get out to Rock Creek Park for some trail running. As I write this I am sweating like a pig because my a/c units are not installed yet... I have a feeling this is going to be a very hot summer here, but hope I am wrong!

Ok, so I'm disappointed and proud at myself at the same time... disappointed because I wasted a lot of time around the house doing nothing productive other than worrying about my life and stressing about whether I'll be able to keep running and working next week, when the summer semester starts, since i'm taking one class that meets twice a week. The house also takes up a lot of my time, since my roommate is gone - I have to take care of the lawn, keep the ants under control, give the cat some attention, get the a/c units out of storage and into the rooms, etc. It seems simple, but it stresses me out... So, I didn't go to Rock Creek Park for that nice long run on the trails up there, and for that I am very upset with myself. I really should've done that! Partly I was not feeling well, and it is ridiculously hot outside and inside (finally today I got a neighbor to help me with the heavy a/c units)... but I should've done it anyways.

Until around 6 pm I was just going to make it a rest day and not run... then i got mad and told myself I had still lots of time to go for a run, and if I went around 7 it would be a bit cooler outside. I didn't have time to make it all the way to Rock Creek Park, but I could go on the mall, which is good because it has a lot of water fountains on the way. So, I grabbed a gel, my keys, and off I went. For that, I'm proud. I beat laziness and went for a 9.4 mile run. I went slow and felt really sluggish at times, felt better after the gel but I think the heat and humidity got to me a bit. I am glad I went, cause if I didn't I would've made it into a pattern of not running when it's so nasty out. When I was coming back home I saw a sign that said it was 94 degrees outside, at 9 p.m. I have ran before when it's even hotter, but not so humid, I don't think. I hope I keep doing this. My shins hurt a little but I'll ice them and should be ok. Now it's a cold shower and off to bed!

Ran to work from home, the long way (Pennsylvania to Mall around Jefferson to Rock Creek Parkway up to M st. ) - very hot already at 6:30 a.m. (84 degrees). Went very slow because of the heat and my backpack, took exactly 1 hour including frequent stops to drink and wait for stop lights.

School starts today... very nervous but hope to be able to run lots still. I just need to manage my time well.

------------

School was great! I think I'm really going to like this class.

After class the weather got ugly here - or did it? Without hesitating, after school I put everything in my backpack in plastic bags, changed into my running clothes, and went out to run home, from Dupont Circle. 4.5 very wet miles, including some sleet, lots of thunder and lightening, and I was back home. I've never felt so alive!!!

The bad news: my shins hurt quite a bit... I think I'm running too much and need to cut back a little. So I will...

Ran from work to milepost 3 of C&O Canal and back, picking up fellow fastrunningblogger and fast guy Aaron on the way. A beautiful day in DC, a little on the warm side but not too bad. Went a little faster than usual to try to keep up with my running companion, but he wasn't even breathing hard no matter how fast I went. Still, I find consolation in having a faster marathon PR than him :) Just kidding - Thanks for kicking my butt, Aaron!

Work got on the way and I couldn't go get my free socks... but I did ran home from work, for a double day witn 5.6 at lunch and 5 in the evening. Tomorow will be easy day, so I rest a little before racing a 10k on Saturday. Oh yeah.... my shins hurt..... icing right now!

Completed the Lawyers Have Heart 10k with team Roadbuilders! A big PR (48:20) and ran 7:47 miles! I felt that I went out too fast, and around mile 4 I was feeling it... boinking... so I took a gel at the water station and that wasn't that good of an idea - I think I drank too much water. It was hot! I'm thinking gels aren't worth the trouble for short races, cause it takes too long for them to pep you up... Live and learn... The last 2 miles were painful, I thought I'd have to stop running several times, but kept pushing on.

I was only 1 minute behind my fastest co-worker and team member, and the other four guys were more than 10 minutes behind me - I love being faster than those guys, even though they're not really training... they're younger and they're male, so they have natural "powers", while I have to work hard... it gives me something to brag about at work :)  But we all finished and had a nice brunch together afterwards, with three other friends that ran the race as well.

Now I'm wondering what to do tomorrow... if I should try for a long run in the afternoon (I know we're not supposed to race hard and do a long run back to back...) Maybe I'll take it easy today, go for a swim, and try to do a long run on Monday before work...

Happy weekend!

Went out to Rock Creek Park to run on the trails, with my ultrarunner friend and running coach Goat, in celebration of his 30th birthday - he slowed down for me which was nice, and it was such a nice day out, I'm glad we got to enjoy it (he was feeling lame for turning 30 - ridiculous! 30 rocks!) I thought we were going pretty good pace, but his Garmin doesn't lie... we did 11 miles in 1:56... pretty slow, but they were quality miles and I had just run that "Fast" 10k yesterday, so it wasn't so bad all things considered. Then we had some food by the Georgetown waterfront, chocolate cake included.

The Goat is an unbelievable ultrarunner - he finished the Western States Endurance Run (100 miler) twice, including one time in 21st place, and the JFK 50-miler in 25th place in 2007 - what a stud! He's giving me good advice about running smarter, and is a great source of inspiration. He trains with elite runner Michael Wardian once a week, which means he really can be fast! If these runs with faster guys don't make me go faster, nothing will!

I'm going to take Monday off since I have a lot of work and studying to do, but hope to run every day this week after that.

Five VERY sluggish miles from home to work this morning... a BEAUTIFUL morning here in DC, though I was hoping for that fresh after-rain smell and instead got some fresh GARBAGE smell throughout the city... At least it's sunny and not too hot. It took me a while to warm up, as my legs felt tired from the weekend race and trail runs. My left hip feels tight, need to stretch it. My shins are hurting a little but not bad considering the weekend mileage. Now I'll try to run home after school tonight and log in 4.5 more for a nice double day!

------------

4.5 miles from Dupont Circle to home after school, on a GORGEOUS evening in DC - the full moon was high up, not too hot, not too humid - just perfect. My legs felt funny... hard to explain, just little pains here and there, nothing to worry about (I hope).

Ran home from work in the afternoon - juuuust as the storm was starting to develop. It was amazing. I left the office and the sky was cloudy and dark. It was raining a little and very windy as I was on the Rock Creek Parkway. As I ran by the softball courts before the Jefferson Memorial, the sun came out, and a full double-rainbow suuuuper bright was right in front of me - all the tourists were taking pictures, it was an amazing sight. Two bands of rainbow right in front, with the sky darker in between them, and the rest of the sky was blue. hard to describe. One of those moments I wish I had a camera with me... The rest of the run on the mall, i kept wishing it rained some more to cool off the air, but it wasn't that hot.

My legs felt really flumsy and didn't feel good up till the very end. I really need to get a new bike so I do more cross-training. Right shin hurt, left was OK.

Another beautiful day in Washington DC - met fastboy Aaron during lunchtime at the C&O Canal for a 6-mile "fast" (for me) run to Fletcher's Boathouse and back to work. Thanks for slowing down for me Aaron!

It's interesting how until now I've always liked running on my own for the most part - but now that I want to get faster, running with faster people makes it easier to pick up the pace a little. When I run alone it's easier to slack off and get lazier.

A friend of mine and fantastic triathlete pointed out that the 2009 Boston maration is number 113th - 13 is my lucky number!!!

Now I'm ready, I think, for a 14-mile run tomorrow to the bicycle store in Alexandria to pick up the book I'll need for the course on bicycle maintenance I'll be taking. Some days I love not having a car! Makes me think more, plan better, and take advantage of my time better.

Shins not hurting right now - followed Barry's advice and took 600 mg Ibuprofen this morning... Thanks Barry!

My oh my.... what a crappy run I had! I made the mistake of heading out without much of a caloric/water plan... I forgot that there is no water along the Mount Vernon Trail, which is absolutely ridiculous, as it was built for bikers and joggers!

I started OK on the Mall, and took advantage of the water fountains there. Then around mile 5 I was hurting... I felt I had no energy and thirsty... had to stop and walk! I kept telling myself it was my mind playing games... after all, I ran last weekend for 2 hours without any gels and very little water on the way! Anyway... I got to Old Town in Alexandria, stopped at a CVS and got some Gatorade and some water - that was mistake number two... I think I drank too much too fast. So for the next few miles I felt sluggish with a full stomach - yet I must've been dehidrated cause I didn't want to go to the bathroom, even after drinking all that much. Finally, I made it to the bike store in Alexandria, got my bicycle maintenance class book, and bought a new bike, then I biked the 13.5 miles home, still feeling sluggish... I need to pay more attention to my nutrition, especially the night before a long run. At least I hope that was the problem...

My shins hurt about mile 4, then they stopped hurting.

Tomorrow I'll exercise in the pool a little. I am soooo happy with my new bike! I was going crazy having to metro to work all those days!

It was another beautiful (hot and humid, a little) day in Washington DC - I decided to take the day off from running, after yesterday's disaster... so I metroed and biked to Alexandria, 6 miles, to my first bicycle maintenance class. It was pretty cool - soon I will be able to fix my own bike, and "pimp my ride" :)

I'll be tapering this week, cause I've had 4 weeks of 50-ish miles... I feel like I need to take a breather. And since I just bought a new bike, I can sometimes run to work and bike back and vice versa, and give my running muscles a break.

It's going to be a great week!

Biked to work this morning on my awesomely smooth new bike, and decided to run home after work - again, storms were forming and we had some wonderful rain thoughout the 6 miles home. Another huge double rainbow formed again, in the same spot as the other day! It was beautiful. Then the sun came out for the last part of the run. I got home and picked up my friend's keys and ran over to her house and back for a total of 9 miles for the day, a bit more than I wanted but good quality miles - it's weird how long it takes me to get warmed up, it took me almost 5 miles to feel good, and the last 4 miles I was going pretty fast. The top of my left foot hurt a bit, as if I was getting tendonitis... hopefully not. My right shin hurt a little at first but not in the end.

Ran home from work at sunset - a beautiful sunset. Not a good run though, my knees were in pain at first, then my left foot hurt a lot and I had to stop with 1/2 a mile to get home... I think I have tendonitis on top of my left foot, right where the foot and the leg meet... I'm going to take tomorrow off and bike only, to see if it feels better... PLEASE feel better little (ehem... I mean big) left foot!

Took the day off, as many fellow bloggers suggested, to see if the pain in the tendon goes away... Biked home, 6 miles, and did some stretching and strengthening exercises.

Day 2 of rest... Biked to work, then to school, then back home. Nice day, a bit on the hot side. Mannnn I really want to run! I feel like I haven't gone for a run in years, and it's only been 2 days! I'm tempted to give it a shot tomorrow morning and run to work - if my tendon hurts, I can jump on the metro... everything I've been reading indicates I have anterior tibialis tendonitis... and that I should rest until it stops hurting, the thing is I don't have pain really except when I run... Maybe I'll be strong and wait till Monday - Patience is not my best quality...

On other news... tomorrow is Friday!

Went hiking to Shenandoah with 6 friends, including fellow blogger Aaron. We did the White Oak Canyon/Cedar Run loop, and it was great! We were going slow because some people in the group weren't in good shape, and then someone had a shoe issue (they brought brand new hiking shoes on their first hike ever on a strenuous 8 mile hike!) So it took us a total of 7 hours to hike BUT that includes stopping to take lots of pictures, and, more importantly, to stop and enjoy the water! The hike has some great swimming holes to jump into, and some rock slides to slide into more great swimming holes! The water was COLD but that's part of the fun, right? I think everyone had fun, and that's what matters. We had to share some of the jumps and slides with other hikers and families, but they were nice.

Excellent day, and the perfect warmup for finally a run tomorrow!

"Reunited, and it feels so good!" That's how I felt about going back to running today! Amazing, and hot. My tendon didn't hurt at all, so thanks everyone for encouraging me to taking a few days off, as hard as it was. Ran 4 miles from home around RFK stadium and it was sunny and waaaay too hot, so I decided to go back home to drink some water and wet my head... then went out again and ran another 4 miles around the Capitol and back home. Could've gone a bit longer but wanted to take it slow on my first day back. My right shin hurts only very little. Other than the heat, I felt pretty good. It's going to be a great week!

Ran to work from home in the morning, the short way (Pennsylvania to the mall to Virginia Ave. up the Rock Creek Parkway - my knees were a bit sore at first, but they loosened up as I got warmed up. My left heel hurts a bit. I got stomach cramps around mile 3, which was weird... I walked a bit and felt better. Sluggish and VERY warm outside, but a good run overall. I was going to go again at lunch today but will probably skip it - I think I need to come back slower after taking those days off...
