| Beautiful morning in Assateague. Woke up at dawn and went for a run on the bike path, then took off shoes and went back to camp barefoot on the sand. Again my run was cut short though, this time because I forgot my glide and started getting chafing between my legs and it hurt. Ughhhh... I'm also not sure how good it was to run in the sand, I started having some pain... It was a beautiful day though, and 8 miles isn't so bad. |

| Woken up by my crazy cat Salem at 5... ughhh... Went for a recovery run for 50 minutes around my neighborhood, down Capitol Hill, up the hill, and back around the neighborhood, very, very slow - having some random pains in my knees and shins, but nothing to worry about. Just took it easy and stretched and they were mostly gone. Felt better after I was warmed up but decided not to go too far. I need to build up more distance in my daily runs though! |

Ran in to work in the morning. Got new shoes last night, some Asics again... I get calluses right where the big toe starts, where bunions would form, but other than that I like the shoes a lot. I'll try wearing those, maybe putting on some moleskin to see if it helps with the calluses, and hope that the new shoes will help with the shin splints...
On a personal note, though I am very happy about being able to run as much as I have been lately without much effort, I haven't been able to keep my eating habits under control, and that is very frustrating. I am disappointed at myself! Why is it so easy for me to exercise, bike, run, etc., but I can't get my eating under control? I have no desire to drink alcohol, eat greasy food or meat, but I just can't say no to sweets, candy bars, cookies... and there are a lot around at work and in the house... I am generally a pretty healthy eater - I'm a vegetarian, I eat a lot of good cereal, grains, beans, tofu, eggs, lots of fruits and vegetables... but I get tempted very easily when my office mates eat junk food, and also when I come home and my roommate makes good desserts... I'm an emotional eater mainly, and I've been busy and a bit stressed lately about work and school and life in general. I need to learn to not eat when I feel stressed! Currently I am 140 lbs, and for a 5'7.5" big-boned girl that is not unhealthy or anything, but I know if I want to run faster, losing 10-15 lbs. will help my knees work a lot better, and it will make me feel better too! Ok, no more ramblings on that... sharing makes the problem more real and makes me more responsible for my actions...
I plan on running around here another 5 miles this afternoon, or run back home. It's a nice day here in DC.
Ran back home after work, in the pouring rain - a bit faster this time, but still with backpack so not very fast

Well, I didn't get to run the 10 miles I was planning... The storm outside was just too strong, and I thought it'd be dangerous to keep running, but I did ran home from work the long way. It took me a long time to warm up, but the last few miles I got to pick up the pace a bit. I love being that crazy runner out in the rain, on the empty DC streets! I got to se a huge tree down by the volleyball courts by the river, it's crazy to think that a few minutes before a lightening bulb was right there! Insane!

Ran to work in the morning, the long way, so I could take a picture of the fallen tree on the volleyball courts. Beautiful day in DC after a terrible storm last night, though very hot and humid. I'm planning to run back home tonight the short way and make it an 11 mile day. I like doubles a lot, but I think I also need to have a few days with 10-mile runs at once.
Ran home from work in the hot and humid DC afternoon. Felt great!

Ran to work from home, the short way, slow (46 minutes total, without stopping my watch for red lights, traffic, etc.) Very humid out, cloudy, hot but not as hot as it's going to get very soon!
Shins bother considerably... I need to do more stretches, massage, and ice...

Ran three easy miles to volunteer at one of the water stops of the Race for the Cure run/walk, and back after the race. Since it's a short race and a very crowded one, I didn't want to run it, but still wanted to be part of it. My mom is a breast cancer survivor, so this race has a special meaning for me. It was quite emotional to see so many people rallying for a cause.
I also wanted to be there because my co-worker Shannon was doing her first 5k. She's so cute - she asked me for training advice, so I tried to help her out as I could. Now she says she's really loving to run and wants to do a 10 miler this fall - that's very exciting. I didn't get to see Shannon but I spotted another co-worker, Liz, through the crowd and was able to cheer for her.
The weather here is getting really, really nasty... it was very humid and hot today, and tomorow it's only going to get worse. I'm hoping I can beat laziness and get out to Rock Creek Park for some trail running. As I write this I am sweating like a pig because my a/c units are not installed yet... I have a feeling this is going to be a very hot summer here, but hope I am wrong! |
