Personal:

I am originally from Knoxville, TN and moved to SLC with Jake in 2010. I started racing in 2011 and had some great success before a major injury hit me in July 2012. I had athletic pubalgia surgery in May 2013...then again in Sept 2014 and am still trying to get back to my old self. Although running is my true passion, I love doing pretty much anything active outdoors - backcountry skiing, backpacking, biking, etc. 

I've been running for the Saucony Team since 2011. I enjoy representing the brand and really do believe they make the best shoes :)

I work as a Quality Engineer for BD Medical in Sandy.

I have not worked out this hard in a LONG time! It was quite a shock to the system...I was happy to run around 6:50 pace (a full minute faster than I've run for a year!). The elliptical was definitely my forte - all that skinning up mountains helped me there. Not surprisingly, I was struggling by the end of the bike. I finished with a beet red face and dripping sweat. I really want to win this triathlon next year - let's hope I'm healthy and can make it happen.

I decided to start posting publicly on the blog again. I have been very hesitant to do this for many reasons, but in the end I know it is good for me to capture my progress and how I am feeling on a daily basis (for some reason I cannot be consistent with writing down this information on an excel spreadsheet).

Just to give a brief summary of the last 8 months or so...I had a second surgery for my chronic groin pain back on September 10, 2015. I can now confidently say that the surgery was worth it and has relieved much of the chronic groin pain. Here is a 3-6 week post-surgery update and a 4th month post-surgery update. I really need to make another update post of 4-8 months...it's on my list! Basically, I spent the first 3 months walking, biking, and laying on the floor a lot. The next 3 months I was able to spend a lot of time in the mountains and get some great exercise through backcountry skiing. And these past 2 months I have finally started to run again. I am currently running ~20mpw and loving every second of it. I still have some pain, but it is getting less. My body is still learning how to move correctly again after 2.5 years of compensation, and this process will likely take quite a bit longer.

This has been and continues to be a very long recovery. I honestly don't know if I'll ever be completely without pain or be able to train and race competitively again, but I am now at a point where I can be happy again. And that's a really big deal! I can enjoy the things I am passionate about - running, skiing, hiking, and essentially everything else relating to being active in the outdoors. The biggest struggle I am having right now is too much motivation :)

PM - Glad that Alta closed and we can finally use the terrain for skinning. 1800ft this evening, and the turns were perfectly slushy.

Lunch run with San from work...we ended up running quite a bit farther than I was anticipating but I held up  pretty well.

Jake and I decided to test our skills a bit and bootpack up Main Chute at Alta then ski back down. It's been a long time since we've done a snow climb (mostly because I haven't been healthy enough), and I really enjoyed the challenge. 2500ft with about 1700ft of skinning and 800ft of bootpacking.

I've had some heel pain crop up the last few days from the increase in activity - just need to keep the calves looser. I felt like this week was good progress.

AM - Woke up early to take advantage of the 16" of new snow up at Alta before it all turned to mush. Jake and I ended up having a fun 4 hour ski tour of 5 laps and 4400ft. It was quite difficult to ski because we couldn't make out the difference between the ground and the sky, hence my "try not to crash" ski shot :)

AM - Pipeline Couloir! Started from Snowbird base and hiked about 1200ft to the snow, skinned up to the base of the couloir, and bootpacked it up to the top. We decided to summit the West Twin which turned out to be sketchy. The ski down was super fun though - such an iconic line and the steepness (42 degrees) was definitely doable with the slushy conditions. A fun adventure with about 3500ft of vertical.

4th Annual BD 5K. This was a good test to see 1) if my body could handle running at a hard effort, and 2) what shape I'm in. I have only been running for 3 months after a year off from running and surgery 9 months ago. It's been a very long, slow recovery but I'm taking it one day at a time. Anyway, my aim was 7:15 pace - this is a hard 5K course (two loops with 90ft hill), it was hot, and I have not run a single mile under 7:30. 

I started out at what felt like a reasonable pace- the first mile is downhill and was 6:35. Ran up the hill feeling strong and splashed some water on myself at the halfway. Back downhill and hit the second mile at 6:50. Breathing got really heavy up the hill again but kept the pace consistent and mile 3 was 6:50. The course was probably 10 seconds short. 

I was very happy with how I felt running. I had no abdominal or adductor pain at all. My heels hurt a little at the end, but no more than usual. I'm not in good enough shape to get that true 5k-hurts like h*ll feeling but I'm okay with that for now :)

This gave me a tiny glimpse of hope that I may be able to run fast again and compete. That's thinking really far ahead, but it is nice to have that hope back. For now, I'll keep trying to increase my miles slowly and get out in the mountains as much as possible!

Banff High School (located between MOOSE and WOLF streets... Do those kids know how lucky they are?) does not appear to have a track but I see one on google maps to the southwest of Banff center. Seems Silverton-esque.

If we do a glacier 5k we can just rope up. That ensures a close finish and if anyone pushes the pace, they'll suffer!

AM - Jake and I woke up early and headed to the Uintas, hoping that there would be something left to ski. No luck there, so we decided to hike to the top of Bald Mountain instead. It's a nice short 4 mile, 1200ft hike with views and a tiny bit of snow left to glissade. 

PM - Biked the Armstrong - HAM - Spiro loop in Park City, ~1000ft of vertical. I was pleasantly surprised with how nice the trail was, but it was still quite a challenge to keep with with Jake while he was running. My mountain biking skills need some work!

AM - Ran an out-and-back on the  Mid Mountain Trail in Park City with Jake, 7 miles. I love this trail and hope to run it a bunch of times this summer/fall, gradually getting closer to the full 22 miles. This is my longest run in 17 months so that makes me really happy :)

Ran an out-and-back on the Pipeline Trail in Millcreek Canyon with Jake. We are hoping to start doing this run once a week for the summer/fall as it is close to home. We ran 7 miles around 8:45 pace - my right leg started feeling really tired after about 5 miles so it was probably a little too soon from Sunday's run but overall a good run.

My first Ragnar. Overall I had a great time and felt like our van dynamic was awesome. I would say we had the "luxury" experience, as we got to relax in homes in between legs and had a 15 passenger van. I can see how this event could be really fun or really miserable, so I'm glad we got the good end of the bargain :)

Friday 6pm Leg 8 - 7.1 flat miles around Pineview Reservoir in Huntsville, Utah at 7:13 pace. SO HOT. This run pushed my current limits of distance, speed, and heat. I really enjoyed the challenge and was so happy to be limited by fitness instead of structural problems. I got quite overheated by the end of the run despite pouring several bottles of cold water on me. This photo is at about mile 6 at the peak of my water desperation -

Saturday 4am Leg 19 - Early, cold, and dark 4 miles on a very gradual uphill +1% (7:30 pace) in Coalville. The majority of this run was on a dirt rail trail which made the footing uneasy with only a headlamp. 

Saturday 2pm Leg 33 - 4.3 miles, first 3 at -10% falling off a cliff (6:20 pace), then flat to the end (7:30 pace). The downhill was way too steep to enjoy at all. Hot run at 92 degrees again so I was pretty overheated by the end.

AM - Wasatch Crest Trail. What an amazing trail - I can't believe we haven't run this in the entire time we've been in SLC! Had a great run. The best time to do this trail is probably in the late evening when there aren't too many mountain bikers out. We will definitely be up here running again soon. Although I did look it up, and apparently lavender oil from plants grown at higher elevations is better. Here's a nugget from one article I just read:

I tried to run hard but didn't even wear a watch because I didn't want to know. I think they picked the hilliest course possible! Afterwards Jake and I ran 4 more miles at a snails pace.

Dash for Donation 5K at Sugarhouse Park. Jake helped to organize this race and signed me up a couple months ago. I was actually pretty worried about running it because of so much travel, only short runs, and some abdominal pain recently. When Jake and I ran the course on Thursday, I thought that under 20:30 would be reasonable. Two laps around Sugarhouse Park is not an easy 5K course!

I ran a short 1 mile warm-up and a couple strides prior to the race. Jake decided to run with me which always helps me run a little harder. After the first half mile, my breathing was already pretty labored - not surprising as I haven't run faster than 7:45 pace in 2 months since the last 5K! Came through the first mile in 6:12 then really started struggling after 1.5 miles. I do think the downhill portions of the race helped keep me going and let my breathing recover quite a bit. The second mile was 6:17 and then we caught up to one of Rob's runners. Jake started casually talking to him, asking him questions and such - apparently he doesn't remember how hard racing a 5k is, not to mention talking during a race! So naturally I told him to shut up :) I tried to pick it up for the last mile and hit 6:00 with :31 for the last 0.1 miles. Right before the finish I saw the clock ticking towards 19 and really tried to get in the 18s but ended up right at 19:00...reminded me of my fastest marathon, half marathon, 5k, etc. I just can't seem to get timing quite right!

I am very happy with my performance. I know it's not even close to the level I was at a few years ago, but it felt great to be able to run that fast again. I am already sore from the race so I know I was working pretty hard out there. I'll probably run another 5K in two more months just to see how much I improve by more running. I've still got a lot of work to do on my rehab as my adductors and psoas are still not strong enough. But I'm getting there, slowly making progress every month.

PM - Corporate Games Mountain Biking Race. Jake and I rode the course prior to the race. I was in the beginner division so the course was only 3 miles long. I was pretty happy with how well I rode the course because my technical skills need a lot of work. I won the division and our team overall got second by only one place! Good choice! I have a bone yard of Garmins. Every time one craps out, I think "I'm done buying these things." I'm on my 5th I think (I'm hard on equipment). That optical HR is pretty cool.

PM1 - Jake and I mountain biked the Armstrong Spiro Loop Trail in Park City, 10.5 miles. I really enjoyed the 1500ft gradual climb uphill but the downhill trail had turned into quite a washboard. Not a great day to forget gloves - we had to ice our hands by the end b/c they hurt so much! The fall colors are very pretty :)

PM2 - Ran 3 miles on the Wasatch Crest Trail on the way home, 10min pace. We were not moving fast but had a nice run.

I'm really happy with the past week of running - 41 miles and several fun longer trail runs. We are headed to Dead Horse State Park this weekend, so I'm planning to do short easy runs throughout the week and then hopefully get in some trail running over the weekend before another trip to China.

AM - Ran up and down the Temple Mountain Road, 10.5 miles at 8:35 pace (1100ft of elevtion gain). 

PM - Hiked the Ding and Dang Canyon loop, 5 miles. This was SO FUN. I did it back in April with the girls + Roo and it was just as much fun the 2nd time around. There was quite a bit more water this time, though! Jake and I ran out the approach for a mile.

SOJO 5K. Jake and I decided to run this race for fun earlier this week. We warmed up for 1.5 miles then the race started right on time at 8:30. The first mile is flat, and I came through at 6:10. My breathing was already quite labored and my legs felt flat so I knew it wasn't going to be a fast one for me today. The next two miles were pretty hilly and I ran 6:30 then 6:25. Final stretch to the finish to a time of 19:35. The course was probably a tad bit short and more challenging since the last time I did it in 2013. I felt like I got a good workout and can't really expect much better with the slog miles I've been putting in :) I won the womens race for $75 - my first deposit in the #weddingfund!

We cooled down for 1.5 miles, got our Chick-fil-a sandwiches and were out of there by 9:35. I was impressed with the race organization and efficiency. They did a great job!

AM - Saltair 5K (6:03, 6:00, 6:12, :22). Course was ~10 seconds short. I was happy with my effort and how I felt physically throughout the race.  I had a few guys to run with the first mile and then it was a solo effort the rest of the way. The third mile was slower which can be attributed to lack of longer or faster runs. This was probably the best conditions at any Saltair race - cold (30 degrees) but no wind and sunny. Warm up of 2 miles and cooldown of 1 mile.

Won a turkey :) Pretty happy with my performance - I felt strong. This is a tough double-loop course with an 80ft hill...the same course as always for work 5ks. I have run it so many times that I almost enjoy the course now. I did convince the wellness coordinator to move back the finish line so it would not be too short as it has been in the past. The last mile was my best effort, so that's a good indication that I'm improving. 

Talk about improvement - I ran this in 28:50 last year! And it was really, really hard - granted, I was only 2 months out from major surgery....but it makes me really happy to be feeling so much better in comparison.

My feet and hands went numb by the first mile and I was too cold to run a fast 5k. I was hoping to run ~18:45 but I ran a solid effort and am honestly happy to be able to run faster in general. Got to Shanghai at 12am, couldn't sleep so I did some cross training cardio - 10 min rowing, 10 min stair stepper, 10 min upright bike, then tried out all the machines in the gym. 

I have really struggled on my trips to China with the treadmill running - the treadmill seems to flare up my abdomen and hip problems and make me feel bad. So I'm going to try not to run this week and focus more on other forms of exercise. Probably good to take a break anyway.

My morning...

Woke up at 5am and got ready to go to the airport. My coworker and I got a taxi to the airport. Usually it takes about 45 minutes to get to the airport from our location in Shanghai but it only took 15 minutes...so I asked my coworker "You are flying out of Pudong airport right?" and his response "Uh, no." Apparently there is another airport! Our flight times were exactly the same so it was confusing. So he spoke to the taxi driver and got him to take me to the correct airport (now 75 minutes away). He proceeded to smoke in the taxi for the entire drive, and it was quite miserable.  I got to the airport with only 40 minutes to spare and stood in the check-in for 15 minutes only to find out that they could not find my name on the flight. So I went to the ticketing counter to understand why I wasn't on the flight and they told me that my ticket was cancelled. The next flight out wasn't until 5pm (it was only 7:30am) and would cost $1100. I had to get to Guangzhou by 4pm. I was panicking so much by this point that I completely forgot about my checked bag and left it somewhere. The internet did not work (note: never go to China again without international plan) but I was somehow able to text so I got in touch with my boss to get the number for the travel agency. I called them and the guy said he has no idea why my ticket was cancelled. He proceeded to tell me that the $1100 was in Chinese dollars (Ohhhh so only ~$200) and there was  another flight that left at 12pm. He was able to reserve the seat but not able to issue a ticket because the airline wasn't in his system. So I took the bus to the other terminal and to the ticket desk. Finally got someone that could speak a little English and they said the travel agent had reserved the last seat and the airline was not able to issue me the ticket because it needed to be through the agent. So I needed to call the travel agent for him to cancel my reservation and they could book the ticket for me. Well, I was put on hold for 15 minutes and then my phone kept dropping the call and I couldn't get through. I literally begged the ladies to let me on the flight and after about 20 minutes  they finally figured out a way to do it. So I got on a flight! Then I had to take the bus back to the other terminal and see if I could find my bag. I was running around frantically for 30 minutes and finally saw a lost and found...low and beyond someone turned it in! Whew. What a totally disaster of a morning! I finally made it on the plane and managed enough communication to get a taxi to the hotel. 

All that to say that I needed at least a short run today. 5K on the treadmill at 9:30 pace.

Getting really homesick...only one more day!

I have had similar airport experiences in distant non-english speaking places...I completely sympathize with the panic and stress this must have caused you. A good run will do wonders for your perspective! Glad you are ok.
