Quality for the Olympic Trials in the marathon Personal: I am originally from Knoxville, TN and moved to SLC with Jake in 2010. I started racing in 2011 and had some great success before a major injury hit me in July 2012. I had athletic pubalgia surgery in May 2013...then again in Sept 2014 and am still trying to get back to my old self. Although running is my true passion, I love doing pretty much anything active outdoors - backcountry skiing, backpacking, biking, etc.
I've been running for the Saucony Team since 2011. I enjoy representing the brand and really do believe they make the best shoes :)
I work as a Quality Engineer for BD Medical in Sandy.

Plan for the next few months (while it's so cold and smoggy) is to split exercise between skinning/skiing and running. They are both great workouts and I think this will get me in very good shape by the summer. It worked really well in 2011 :-) |

I almost fell down an entire slope while skinning but managed to keep myself in a sketchy upside down position until Jake could help me. Pretty typical for me :) Hard to beat the views from up there though!

I have been pretty lazy about updating the blog. It's interesting how it used to be the first thing I did every morning - update, check other people's blogs, comment, be engaged. And now Jake has to remind me once a week to update it so I don't get too far behind. I wonder if it'll change again if I start training again. Maybe it's because I'm trying not to get too motivated...my body is not really ready to do workouts and I am the first to admit that I have exercise-guilt. Beat my time by 2:30 from last year. I'm in the lead with still two more days of individual time trials (people get really competitive, especially the guys!) but most of the faster ones have already gone. It would make me pretty happy to put all their egos in check :) Regardless, I felt very strong structurally with no pain and was able to get in a hard workout.

| | Lift skiing at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. We skied with a couple friends who are way better (faster) skiers than we are. So it was a constant chase to keep up with them! I think the hard, fast skiing was a little much for my abdomen as it started to hurt and ended up lingering for a few days.

We didn't have exceptionally high expectations considering the heat and howEPIC yesterday was, but the NE aspects skied even better than anticipated (E aspect = quad burning slush). Finished up the usual south side run back to Alta and thanks to a little breeze, the snow was supportable. Overall another great day - beautiful weather in the alpine and no one was around... we had Days Fork to ourselves. [3400']

BD 5K (3.07 Miles) 00:19:33, Place overall: 1 | | 5th Annual BD 5K. I've done a total of two miles fast in the last 7 months and it was quite hot outside so I had a feeling that was going to be brutal. And it was! My legs still felt dead from all the skiing and moving and running over Memorial Day weekend. I started out way too fast on the downhill mile (5:46) then kept a relatively consistent pace for the last two hilly miles (6:27, 6:27). Limiting factor was fitness, not structural which is a great sign. This has really motivated me to want to get in better running shape...which probably won't happen until after the wedding and honeymoon, but hopefully by the fall :)

The doctor and his dog moved here from Kansas a month ago..turns out dogs are affected by altitude just like people when it comes to exercise b/c he was struggling!

PM - Murren to Gimmelwald (not to be confused with Grindelwald) Via Ferrata. We were really nervous about doing our first via ferrata but it turned out to be pretty easy. This one had a couple really exposed sections and also a few cables bridges. Then we stopped by Staubbach Falls in Lauterbrunnen and on to Chamonix.

| | Took the Flegere / Index lifts up and hiked across the mountain on the north side of the valley. First to Col du Lac Cornu and then to Planpraz, where we took another lift back down to the valley. At first we were bummed because it was foggy out so you couldn't see anything, but after a couple hours the skies cleared up and it made the views that much sweeter!
PM - Took the cable car up to Aguille du Midi and hung out up there for a few hours. Really incredible!

| | Started from Rifugio Valsinella and hiked up to Rifugio Casinei, then to Rifugio Brentei, then to Rifugio Alimonta, and finally up the remnants of a glacier to get to the central section of the Via Delle Bocchette (4100ft). We did a portion of this called the Via Ferrata Bocchette Centrali (difficulty 3C). The via ferrata is mostly a traverse with a lot of ladders and ledges. Then we made our way back down to Rifugio Brentei, running the last 10 minutes to barely miss a fast-moving rainstorm. Had some coffee at the rifugio then made our way back down to the start.

| | AM - Via Ferrata Degli Alpini (difficulty 3B, 1650ft). It was super crowded...probably 20 people waiting to start the route. Once we got going, it was really fun rock scrambling with a few pretty challenging moves (if you didn't use the cable to pull yourself up).
PM1 - Took the tram up to the top of Lagazuoi then hiked down the mountain through the old WWI tunnels. Lots of war history here, Rob Murphy - if you ever go to Italy, the Falzerego Pass is where you want to go!
PM2 - Hiked to the top of Sass de Stria (1000ft). Tons of WWI trenches all the way up to the top of the mountain, with a cool cross at the top with 360 degree views of the Dolomites.

Dash for Donation (3.107 Miles) 00:19:05, Place overall: 1 | | Dash for Donation at Sugarhouse Park. We do this race every year because it's for a good cause and Jake helps to organize it. I think we were both dreading the race a bit because it's been a long time since we have tried to run faster than easy pace. Gotta start somewhere though!
We ran a 2.6 mile warm-up then got started. Within the first quarter mile is the steep hill. By the time I got to the top I already felt exhausted. My legs felt fatigued and I was breathing way too hard. A new girl to the area (Kat) took the lead ahead of me and I remained about 10 ft behind her until about 2.5 miles. I maintained a pretty consistent pace with 6:14 and 6:18 through the first two miles. On the very last hill of the race, the girl started slowing so I took over the lead. Last mile was 5:55 (more downhill) with :40 for the last 0.1. I honestly didn't think I was going to catch Cat, but I think the altitude finally got to her.
I ran pretty much the same time as I did last year. There are some key differences though - last year I was only running 3-5 miles/day, was completely rested, and Jake ran with me (= pushed me to run fast). The past couple months I have been consistently around 50 mpw (except for the honeymoon which I would argue was harder and more exercise). Basically, I'm running on tired legs and with no speed at all. So I'm taking this result as a huge positive. With a little more time, a little speedwork, and some rest, I should be able to run sub-18.
Jake and I ran a 3 mile cooldown with Kat. She just moved here a few days ago - ran at Eastern Kentucky. New running buddy :)
