WHERE DO I BEGIN????????  Last year I ran this race hoping that I would BQ.  I missed my time by 5 minutes and walked away with an upsetting 3:45.  Not this year!  I still can't get it through my skull that I knocked off 23 minutes.  This running blog, plus having a Garmin, has helped me improve immensely!  Thank you so much for all of those that have given me support.

Going into this race I was nervous.  Last year I learned that this is NOT my favorite course.  The twists, turns, and uphill in the last few miles catches even experienced runners off guard.  I had to re-think my "strategy" for this year.  Allie Scott, (from FRB) really helped me reach a goal that I thought was a little out of reach.  This entire week I KNEW that I would cross the finish at aproximately 3:22, I just knew it.  Yes, 3:20 was my goal, but 3:22 was a great finish.

Allie gave me a system that broke each mile down into it's own individual pace according to the course.  This helped me so much!  I had the mile splits written down my arm.  This helped me stay alert and focused on the miles that lay up ahead.

Last night I arrived in Logan and journeyed to the race expo.  Purchased socks that guaranteed I would not get blisters, and I also looked at a few of the booths.  The expo was a lot better than last year.

I slept at my friend's apartment on the couch.  Pretty sure I did not sleep much more than 4 hours.  It was  hot, people were really noisy, and the doors kept slamming shut.  It was ideal. :|

Got to the bus pickup around 5:30 and met RAD and her friend for the bus ride up.  I shared a seat with some random lady that was more excited to run the race than I was.  She noticed the pace marks on my arm and asked me all sorts of funny questions about running.  She asked what my goal pace for the race was?  She then announced it to all of the people around us.  I was pretty embarrassed.

Off the bus we went, and we lined up for the POP. There was no way that I would make it to the start on time if I waited in line, so I headed to the bushes.  I hustled and felt rushed as I went to the bag drop off.  After I put my bag in the bus, I turned around and was almost hit by a bus pulling away from the curb.  Yikes!  I then lined up at the front of the pack observing all of the fabulous elites.

Start gun went, and we were off without second thoughts.  I felt relaxed and cool miles 1-10.  My boss from Fleet Feet passed me about mile 4, he was aiming for a 3 hour marathon.  I kept Allie in view as she used the first few miles to warm up (I think).  She looked strong.  It's nice to know that SOMETIMES during a race even the fast runners run at my pace.

10-16 still feeling good.  The main goal was to make this long-run feel like a jog.  Pretty much the entire race felt that way.  I tried to let myself move a little faster on the downhill, and back away on the up. From miles 13-16 there was an AWESOME tail-wind that pushed us out of the canyon.  I let myself take a ride.  I saw Smooth at 14 cheering me on!  She looked nice and cozy in her blanket and jacket.  I saw my friend Sarah at about mile 18 with the coolest poster for me, and a few Gels.  She's such a great friend!  She tried to run with me a little and she could tell I was in "The Zone."

16-20  I think these were the worst feeling miles.  Twists and turns in a residential area, plus the sun was now beating down on everyone.  "Ewe" is all I have to say.

20-23  Still feeling the heat.  Talked myself out of walking several times.  I was only allowing myself to walk at the aid stations.  Pretty sure those two extra minutes were from stopping at the aid stations. :(  "Barf" feeling set in from all of the yucky GUs.

23-26 Just get there!  5k baby.  I kept thinking to myself,  "I can do a nice 5k in my sleep."  I saw my family at the bottom of the hill at 25!  Their spirit and energy pushed me up the hill, no joke!  At mile 25 I passed my boss, he did not look good.  Poor guy got a cramp or something.  I yelled at him to get going, and I pushed the pace!  I was ready for the darn race to be OVER!

26.2  Finished. :)  Best medal (besides Boston) that I have ever seen. I sat in the cold ditch for about 10 minutes, that felt amazing.  Congratulated and thanked runners that were running by me. (Mostly men and 1 girl)

I did place 1st in the Athena.  Course record.  Felt amazing to be recognized!

It was so fun chatting with a few friends at the award ceremony.  INCLUDING the Kenyan that kept asking for my number. hehehe. So great to finally meet Allie and thank her for the pace chart.

GREAT DAY!!!!

By the way, the socks that I purchased at the expo did not give me one blister.  I usually have about five blisters after a marathon.  In fact, the socks left my feet in the best post-marathon state they have ever been in.  I think the brand is called LIL.

bec - i am so happy for you. what an incredible race! and the course record in your division, that is great. i cannot take credit for those pace charts, as they are from paul petersen. but i am so glad the pacing worked for you and that everything clicked into place today. you paced it perfectly; reading through all the TOU reports it is evident that the second half really killed people today. so nice job on running smart and strong to the end. it was so fun talking to you at the awards. lol about the kenyan wanting your number. nice!

From cheryl on Sat, Sep 19, 2009 at 19:26:46 from 76.27.66.153

Great job, Bec. I knew you were going to do well, you've been running really strong. Congrats!!

Way to go!

From Smooth on Sat, Sep 19, 2009 at 20:09:37 from 97.117.81.161

I'm not surprised that the Kenyan wants your number. It's a lucky one! So happy that you ran your plan. CONGRATS on the course PR in your division. What a HUGE accomplishment. You have worked hard and trained like a mad woman. AWESOME race and well done! TOU is a toughie. So proud of your HUGE PR! This year's medal is so much nicer than last year. and the shirt is better too. Are you parents gonna build a trophy case for all your "hardwares"?

From Bec on Sat, Sep 19, 2009 at 20:28:40 from 67.177.35.60

Smooth, you make me laugh! Thanks for being a cheer leader on the side. RAD told me you were going to be there, and I was really looking forward to seeing you. I have a "Wall of Fame" at my house that holds all of the medals. It's getting pretty full and I think I need a new one. Where do you hang all of your medals and hardware?

From Burt on Sat, Sep 19, 2009 at 20:59:43 from 98.167.151.26

From Jon on Sat, Sep 19, 2009 at 23:40:01 from 75.169.140.248

Way to go, Bec, winning your division and setting your PR. Sounds like you pushed through the hard stuff and ran great. And sitting in the ditch is definitely a wonderful idea- your legs will thank you tomorrow.

From Walter on Sun, Sep 20, 2009 at 01:52:10 from 76.27.15.208

Bec, You kept your head in the game which is very hard to do when you have some challenges at the end of that course. I am glad you had a good day and even though you missed your PR by 2 minutes, you probably were able to place a bit better in your categories. I take that over time anyday.

From RAD on Sun, Sep 20, 2009 at 02:43:48 from 76.27.12.70

Congratulations on a breakthrough PR!

Which Kenyan was it that wanted your number?

From Kelli on Tue, Sep 22, 2009 at 18:39:10 from 71.219.96.151

It is Tuesday, hope you are recovering well!

From Bec on Tue, Sep 22, 2009 at 19:13:25 from 67.177.35.60

Thank you, thank you to everyone and your support!!! This blog has helped me improve so much and I am ready to work even harder.

The Kenyan that wanted my # was second place overall. I guess I missed his name. He was scaring me a little.

From Burt on Tue, Sep 22, 2009 at 19:17:46 from 68.76.197.194

Hmmmm...that's the same one that gave Paul a big hug after the race. I guess he decided he likes you better. ;)

From Bec on Tue, Sep 22, 2009 at 19:38:04 from 67.177.35.60

Burt,

HAHAHA!!! He gave Paul a big hug? That is kind of funny. I wonder what Paul was thinking. That dude was extremely forward with his feelings!

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, Sep 22, 2009 at 20:06:24 from 192.168.1.1

That is Josphat Chemjor:

http://www.iaaf.org/athletes/biographies/country=KEN/athcode=189440/index.html

Note that not every Kenyan makes it to IAAF website. He has to have been really fast to get noticed at some point.

From Burt on Tue, Sep 22, 2009 at 20:12:01 from 68.76.197.194

He's forward with his feelings because he is 32. He's just a lonely old man.

BTW - 2665 spells COOL.

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, Sep 22, 2009 at 20:12:33 from 192.168.1.1

Also, Burt, man hugs have become weird in our time and culture for the reason we will not mention. I remember back in the 80s it was customary for Soviet leaders to kiss each other on the lips and nobody thought anything of it. Here is a picture from the late 80s:

Thank you for that image.

From Bec on Wed, Sep 23, 2009 at 00:01:54 from 67.177.35.60

Josphat did a 2:13:11 marathon? WOW! That is some pretty intense running. He told me that he lives and trains in Colorado part of the year, and lives in Kenya the other part.

I think it's pretty cool that a few Kenyan's made a showing at the race last week. It's more impressive that a local man (Paul), passed them up!

From Bec on Wed, Sep 23, 2009 at 00:03:24 from 67.177.35.60

WOW! Crazy picture of the guys! That is something that you don't see everyday around here.
