Great race! My only complaint is that I didn't get to meet Allie :( Official time and details coming soon.

This was by far the best Marathon I've run. Even aside from my time, every aspect of this race was better than any I've run before. The course, the support on the course, the bands, the enthusiastic crowds, it just couldn't get any better than this. It was such a positive experience that I never worried even once about meeting my goal. I actually had a lot of fun during the first 20, maybe even too much fun :) Everybody had something to say about my flaming running outfit so I would always comment back with "thank you" or "I wore this just for you; my fans mean everything to me" or "I'm burnin' I'm burnin' for you". That gernerated a lot of chit chat between me and the other runners around me too. Everyone I came in contact with was so friendly, I've never been so social during a race. I know I wasted a lot of energy runnin' my mouth instead of my feet, but it was fun.

We drove down to Eugene on Saturday morning and stayed at the Travelers Inn which is a total dive, but it was clean and the manager was super friendly. He even offered to drive me to the start line in the morning. After the race he wanted to hear all about it and was very happy for me. He insisted that I load up with bananas and muffins left over from "breakfast" when I checked out too. I was up at 5:00am for coffee and my pre-race ritual of realeasing the hostages (that was for Burt). At 5:20 I received some encouragement from baldnspicy on facebook, Thanks Wes, you're a cool dude. At 6:30 when the hostage negotiations were finally over, I headed to the start line and found my way to the 3:20 pace group where we heard the national anthem and were sent off by Linda Prefontaine. The first few miles were mostly downhill and I didn't even notice the uphill stretch between3 and 5. I was looking forward to the "big one" at mile 8 and it was a breeze. Miles 14-15 came with a strong headwind that slowed me down a bit, but I was back in the 7-teens and still feeling good after that. At mile 18 I started feel like I was working a little harder and decided to back off the effort a little, hoping to save enough for a strong finish. I figured as long as the 3:15 pace group wasn't passing me I was fine. At mile 20 I picked up the effort, but my speed didn't change :( By 22 I was sure I had hit "the wall", at mile 23 the wall hit me! About this time I also remembered that there was no 3:15 pace group so I probably wasn't as fine as I thought.. I was too tired to fiddle with my watch or to do the math to see how slow I could go and still BQ so I just pressed on and tried to think about how short a 5k is. That's all I have left to do right? Only 5k left between me and Boston! My quads felt like hardening cement and from there each mile was about 30 seconds slower than the last even though I was running harder. I sure hope I looked better than I felt coming across the finish line. Post race recovery was quick considering how spent I was. I downed a couple bottles of water and some bananas and was ready to go. I still can't believe how much food there was in the finish area. They really take good care of their runners.
I REALLY, REALLY APPRECIATE all the encouragement and advice from everybody here at FRB. I would not have done this without you! I'm looking forward to meeting as many of you as possible next year in Boston!

From baldnspicy on Mon, May 03, 2010 at 09:39:41 from 72.77.121.216

Look how far you've come since your 2005 Portland Marathon, then two years later at Tacoma. You've just rocked it this time around! Congrats on your BQ (Bonnie said it, not me! :-)! So exciting!!!

Thanks everybody! I added a few details about the race. Sorry I'm not a better writer than runner. I REALLY, REALLY APPRECIATE all the encouragement and advice from everybody at FRB. I would not have done this without you! I'm looking forward to meeting as many of you as possible next year in Boston!

Congratulations! I am so happy for you. You have really earned this, Mr. Burnin Up Fast!!

From Kelli on Mon, May 03, 2010 at 17:38:47 from 71.219.75.178

YES! I am so darn excited to meet you, I can not believe I have to wait a year. Are you gonna wear the same outfit at Boston???

I loved your comments to your fans, that is great! Some people are so darn serious at races, it is just no fun.

From Burt on Mon, May 03, 2010 at 17:55:34 from 206.19.214.144

I totally get what you mean by releasing the hostages. Don't worry everybody. It's an inside joke.

I'm going to be flat up honest with you. As far as being social in a race, I can understand why you never have been before. You look intimidating! Look at your picture right now. You're all business. And the very first picture you had when you're running over that bridge, you look like you'd kill me as soon as look at me. I think it's the whole biker thing. It's scary. Of course, that hasn't stopped me from flipping a whole line of bikers coming down the highway the bird before.

Divided highway, of course.

From rAtTLeTrAp on Mon, May 03, 2010 at 18:04:49 from 75.230.27.21

Snoqualmie - thanks, I did work pretty hard for this, but I doubt I would have stuck with it without FRB. Especially after my injury last summer. Now I just need to earn some $ to pay for that trip to Boston :)

Kelli - Heck yes I'm gonna wear that outfit! I'm not gonna let my fans down :) It is now my official racewear only to be used for those special occasions.

From rAtTLeTrAp on Mon, May 03, 2010 at 18:14:45 from 75.230.27.21

Burt - You crack me up! I am not scary. I am a scrawney little Christian biker that wouldn't ever hurt anybody.. unless maybe they messed with one of my daughters.

PS. For your own safety, always use all of your fingers when you wave at bikers.

From JimF on Mon, May 03, 2010 at 21:19:16 from 216.149.208.8

Congratulations on a great race and BQ! It is very cool that you had such a good experience and enjoyed yourself.

From Jon on Mon, May 03, 2010 at 22:38:29 from 75.169.144.164

Nice job!

From rAtTLeTrAp on Mon, May 03, 2010 at 22:54:53 from 76.121.76.165

Thanks Jon and JimF. I hope I enjoy Boston as much as Eugene.

Burt - Have you looked at my master of disguise photo album on facebook? You'll love "Grandma and Grandpa goth". Kym and I dressed up like that for a youth group scavenger hunt at the mall. I'll admit we both look a little scary there :)

From gdoc on Mon, May 03, 2010 at 23:09:10 from 98.202.195.25

Awesome!

From baldnspicy on Mon, May 03, 2010 at 23:42:46 from 72.77.121.216

Burt, you didn't mention that you were 200m from your car when you flipped them off. Chicken!

RT - thanks for the shout out, lol. Nice report! You did great and I'm especially glad to hear you wore your outfit! When do we get to see some pictures??

From allie on Tue, May 04, 2010 at 00:21:13 from 67.177.0.102

From rAtTLeTrAp on Tue, May 04, 2010 at 11:35:27 from 75.230.115.200

Thanks Allie, Nicole, gdoc. It funny, I've run races with 4 or 5 different bloggers now, but never actually met any of you. How is that possible?

Kelli - check your FB for a friend request if you want to see those pics.

From Kelli on Tue, May 04, 2010 at 14:32:49 from 71.219.75.178

You are right! Grandma and Grandpa Goth are scary! You are very good with the Halloween costumes. The one that is the profile pic, could not even tell it was you!

From Dale on Tue, May 04, 2010 at 20:52:58 from 69.10.215.11

Congrats on the BQ and PR. 30 minutes huh? Nothing like a *little* improvement!

From rAtTLeTrAp on Tue, May 04, 2010 at 21:13:42 from 76.121.76.165

Kelli - Several people I knew didn't even recognize me in person in that profile pic getup, including my Pastor. He actually introduced himself to me like I was a newcomer at our Men's breakfast :)

Dale - Thanks! It's a big PR, but it wasn't exactly overnight. My previous time was from May 2007.

From josse on Tue, May 04, 2010 at 22:13:21 from 75.252.169.110

WOW 30 mins. that is so great!!! Way to go, this is what it is all about:)

From Coach Cara on Tue, May 04, 2010 at 23:11:20 from 74.107.148.31

Super job! Wow, what a PR!

Hey--you're a redhead too! I didn't realize it. Well, I hope you didn't end up with a sunburn. When the sun peeped out a bit toward the end, I felt some of my strength fizzle, but I kept telling myself that cheetahs actually like the sun.

From rAtTLeTrAp on Wed, May 05, 2010 at 10:55:42 from 75.230.199.49

Josse - Thanks. This IS what it's been all about for 15 months. What a milestone!

Coach Cara - No sunburn for me. I was already a little crispy around the edges from a few days in Arizona before the race, but it didn't get any worse. I thought the weather was almost perfect.

From Benny's on Wed, May 05, 2010 at 18:14:29 from 72.178.194.200

love your report!! I felt the same towards the race... i love it so much I never once looked at my watch or the time on the clocks...

good job man! looks like u had an awesome mgr at the hotel where you stayed.

From april27 on Sat, May 08, 2010 at 15:54:34 from 99.188.251.180

Wow a 30 minute PR! YOu are awesome!!! You kick marathon butt! Now you get to kick boston butt!

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, May 11, 2010 at 12:11:34 from 192.168.1.1

Congratulations! What is even better is that your splits show you are more of a 3:05 guy. Something to look forward to once you recover and are able to run injury free for long enough to achieve that fitness.

From rAtTLeTrAp on Tue, May 11, 2010 at 14:19:52 from 75.230.235.189

Thanks Sasha. What do you think is a realistic goal for me next year in Boston?

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, May 11, 2010 at 14:59:29 from 192.168.1.1

3:05 assuming you can train without injuries.

From rAtTLeTrAp on Tue, May 11, 2010 at 17:06:14 from 75.230.235.189

Sasha - I'm surprised you think I could do that well in Boston. I hear so much about what a difficult course it is, I'm a little intimidated by it.

From Sasha Pachev on Wed, May 12, 2010 at 11:55:41 from 192.168.1.1

Mike - you are not a 3:16 guy. You ran 3:16 because you are not yet a marathoner. When you become a marathoner you will be running in the low 3:00 or maybe a little under.

From rAtTLeTrAp on Wed, May 12, 2010 at 16:45:05 from 72.102.213.201

I agree; I am not a marathoner. I hardly even consider myself a runner, although I guess I could say that now.

I do like how you say "WHEN you become a marathoner" and "you WILL be running..."

I just wish there were more hours in the day so I could realize all the potential you see.

From Sasha Pachev on Thu, May 13, 2010 at 12:34:54 from 192.168.1.1

Mike - as long as you can find an hour and 20 minutes on a weekday, and twice that long on a weekend, this will be enough for you to run in the low 3:00.

From rAtTLeTrAp on Thu, May 13, 2010 at 13:23:09 from 75.230.3.152

Oh, is that all :)

Seriously, I realize that's not a huge amount of time, but it is a matter of perspective. I'm the one doing all the running and it still seems a lot longer to my wife :)
