| What a bust. This was supposed to be a 6 mile tempo run at 7:05 min/miles but I got crazy side cramps. I couldn't pull it together. I had to stop twice during the tempo miles to deep breathe and get the side stitch under control. What the? I've never had side cramps so bad. It was a mental struggle and kind of a bust. I averaged 7:07 for the tempo miles but I stopped my watch during the breaks. 2 miles warm up, 2 miles cool down.

| I signed up for this marathon because it was in my area and it was cheap. :) The race was supposed to be from Salt Lake to Draper along the Jordan River Marathon but something happened with their permit. A couple weeks before the race, the course changed to an out and back course starting in Draper. I didn't really mind. I live in Sandy and it seems that the wind is always blowing from south to north here so I'd rather run only half the race against the wind, than the whole race.
My goal for this race was a 3:15-3:20. I was well trained for it. I hit all, if not most, of my speed workouts. I felt well rested and strong. I knew I'd have to work for it on marathon day, but I also knew it was within my capabilities.
The gun went off and I took off. As far as I could see, I was the first girl. It was a lonely race. I questioned at times whether or not I had taken a wrong turn. At about mile 6 or 7, a guy came up behind me. We got to talking and found we were both going for the same time. We decided to help each other. He made the next few miles fly by. The wind was blowing slightly at our backs. Quite pleasant.
Approaching the halfway point, it wasn't exactly clear where to turn around. There were racers and random people running on the trail that morning. Some people were turning at one spot and others were turning at another. We chose to go further down and turn. Who knows if we were right? (My garmin did read 1/2 mile longer but who knows, maybe I'm a drunk runner?)
At the turn around, I felt the south wind. It wasn't too bad at first but then as the miles ticked on, it felt harder and harder to keep my pace. At the half, I was right on for a 3:15. I watched as my average pace slipped from a 7:25 to 7:40, to 7:55, etc. I felt the like the wind was getting stronger but then again, I may have just been getting more tired. At mile 15, I couldn't keep the pace and I told my friend to go on. I told myself to just keep him in my sight. At mile 18, I lost him. At this point, I was passing half marathoners and playing mind games to keep myself from stopping. My hamstrings cramped. I got nauseated. The wind seemed to pick up. My legs got heavier. It was painful. I stopped looking at my watch at mile 22. Grin and bear it. If I couldn't endure it well, I'd endure it painfully. :) In the end, I made it. It wasn't pretty as I hobbled off the parkway and made the final loop around the Ebay campus. (I tell you what, THAT is painful, passing right by the finish line and having to make another mile loop.) My cute support crew were there to cheer me on. My 5 year old grabbed my hand and ran me in the last 100 meters. Sad thing is, he could totally outrun me at this point. :) I was happy to have his help!
My race friend was waiting for me at the end and he informed me that I was the first girl. I was pleasantly surprised to get the win. I wasn't expecting to win the dang thing! The perk of smaller races, I guess. It may not have been a pretty win but it was still fun to be the first girl.
I'm still going for that dang 3:15. I tried last fall and didn't do it. Tried again this Spring. Here's hoping 3rd times the charm this fall.

I felt good. I love this course and this race. Beautiful weather, the sun isn't beating down yet because of an early start, and the course is great. I was pleased with how this turned out. I felt like I maintained a hard effort the whole time without getting out of control. I stayed in the mile I was in and took it a little bit at a time. I do better at holding it together in halfs than I do marathons.
Here are my splits- 6:54, 7:04, 6:56, 6:43, 6:41, 6:37, 6:47, 6:48, 7:24, 7:17, 7:12, 7:09, 7:01, 1:00. I managed to run an extra amount again. Apparently I'm a drunk runner. My watch has an average time of 6:57 but since I'm swervy McGee in races, my recorded race average time is 7:03 min/mi.
I really like this race. Here's hoping I'm on track for a 3:15 in St. George....

| This was supposed to be my race. This was my 3:15. It was a great course. We had great weather. I hit all my paces during training. I tapered like a champ....
I'm not so much disappointed as I am confused. I don't know what I'm doing or not doing. This is my third attempt at a 3:15 and the conditions were the most favorable for me at this race. I printed out my race pace band. I followed it religiously (I did cut myself some slack on Veyo). At the half, I was right on for a 3:15.
I felt good until about mile 18/19. At mile 19, I had to get realistic with myself. I knew that I couldn't ignore my body. I walked through the aid station and dumped a cup of water on my head, gave myself a pep talk and promised myself that if I would hold it together, I could still PR. (Under 3:21:5X)
I can't say I didn't try. I was holding steady until about mile 22. My body started to break down. Heavy legs, crampy stomach, dizziness, crazy nausea....My pace dropped into the 8 min/mile range and continued to fall with each mile. I swear I don't remember much about the last 2 miles. It seemed I was running in a tunnel. I remember thinking that I needed to see where the medic tents were at the finish line cuz I felt so dizzy. I'm scared to see the photos of the finish. I'm pretty sure I look like death warmed over. I certainly felt it.....
3:25 plus change is still a respectable race. I don't want to downplay that. I just don't know where I'm lacking. Do I need more mileage? More marathon paced workouts? I can always work on my nutrition. (I love sugar....a lot) My husband has been gone for the last 2 months and single motherhood is hard. Maybe that has taken its toll? I just want someone smarter than me to tell me what to do to get that dang 3:15.
I did really enjoy this course. (Until miles 18/19) I hope to someday hold it together during that last 10K. That is where I've struggled in all my marathons....Any of you out there reading this....advice is welcome.

| 4 miles continuously, 3 with some breaks. I am thankful that I can run more than 5 minutes today. I have been dealing with IT band issues for the last month. Turns out that I have weak hips. Took some time off and have been slowly increasing my running. I started with running 2 minutes, walking 3 for 20 minutes. It was hard to go from marathon training to that. I'm just grateful that it happened AFTER St. George and not before. (Cuz that sucker stopped me dead in my tracks with knee pain) I'm trying not to go crazy adding mileage back in. I know it will come but at the same time, I am trying to keep my sanity. I'm a much more patient person and mother when I get my run in..... So today I am grateful for many things. Being able to run 4 miles continuously without pain is one of them. | |
