Personal:

Married with 2 lively boys. I love running and I love getting faster. Just trying to figure out how to balance life between being a mother, wife, part time nurse, and runner. :)

When I was in 6th grade I filled out a Getting to Know You sheet. Under nicknames I wrote, "My brothers call me Boo Legs, I think its because I run fast." (It really came from the movie, Strange Brew) And its been my family nickname ever since.

I'm still alive. I started a new job about three weeks ago. I'm orienting to the new job full time and when that's done (next week), I'll just go part time. Thank goodness! Finding time/energy to run has been a challenge. Today at 5:00 am, there was an epic battle between my bed and the treadmill.....My bed won. I'm okay with that. I think I needed the extra hour of sleep.

Tried a bootcamp style class at the gym. So. Stinkin. Hard.  It was a circuit class filled with lunges, push ups, pull ups, running stairs, back extensions, sprints, cable rows, crunches, and rowing. The upper body stuff was the hardest for me. No surprise there. I ran 3 very slow miles after.

Even though I ran inside today, I felt soooo much better because I can actually see the sky. (I'm sure a lot of people living in northern Utah feel this way) Lately, I feel like I've got some winter blues going on because of the crappy weather and air. Its been a real bummer not being able to run outside in the fresh air. Treadmill running gets old, there's only so many shows I can catch up on. Its been hard to find motivation. Struggling big time. Long story short, I'm hoping to run outside sometime this week before the crappy air comes back.....

average light intensity inside a home or office: 200-500 lux

light intensity on a bright summer day: up to 100,000 lux!

winter is tough enough -- adding terrible air pollution to the mix is killer. i'm so glad we got a storm to clean it all out.

nice run to start off the week.

From NatalieK on Mon, Jan 28, 2013 at 15:42:31 from 67.182.200.33

Allie, first of all, I'm dumb and don't know exactly what lux means, I can assume (and now I'm going to google it) and second of all, thats a huge difference, no wonder we feel like crap, and third of all, you're smart.

From Kam on Thu, Jan 31, 2013 at 21:41:58 from 71.219.133.34

Natalie, It would have been perfect if the last line of your comment said "your smart." allie is a real stickler when it comes to your/you're/yore. not so much with capitalization, though. All that aside, she is an A-1 source for answers to all your usage and punctuation questions.

10 slow outside miles. It felt good to run outside again. I haven't done so in about a month. Stinkin weather....

Almost died a couple of times due to some very icy spots and large amounts of snow plowed to the side of the road. There isn't as much room for me to run on the shoulder of the roads and not risk being side swiped by passing cars. Actually had to hop into snow banks a few times to avoid on coming cars.

Despite the car dodging and escaping death a few times, I was so happy to be running outside.

7 miles outside! Woohoo for outside running. Not sure on speed. Slow.

I'm trying not to worry too much about pace since I've gotten pregnant. It seems as though the moment I found out, it became so hard to run at my normal easy pace. Easy pace has now become hard. I know that's normal but still...not fun to watch yourself get slower and slower so quickly. I need to remember to appreciate my body and what it is capable of. (running AND supporting/growing a baby)

My goal is to run for as long as I can during this pregnancy. With my first child, I tore my ACL in a soccer game the week I found out I was pregnant. That meant no running, no surgery until after the baby. It made for a loooooong nine months.

Maybe you are more achy because of 2nd life; then again, it could be the shoes. 430 miles doesn't seem excessive.

From NatalieK on Tue, Apr 16, 2013 at 12:59:43 from 98.202.32.58

True, true. I guess turning food into a human can certainly take its toll on the body and the joints.

I've always heard to switch out your shoes between 300-500 miles. (But I'm usually a cheaper chicken and don't do it until I get above 500.) When do you usually switch out?

From Kam on Tue, Apr 16, 2013 at 13:12:19 from 68.66.163.179

Shoe manufacturers would love everyone to switch shoes at 300-500 miles, that way they sell more.

I think for new runners, it can make a difference, but more experienced, consistent, year round runners it matters less. Your joints, ligaments, connective tissues, etc...become adapted to the pounding, and shoes matter less.

It was shin splints last time, and I'm pretty sure its shin splints this time. Stress fractures don't usually "warm up" right? It seems like it feels better after I've run 1-2 miles and stretched my calves and achilles. I hope I'm right. I think its related weight gain from pregnancy? I ran 9 miles yesterday and then went to work 9 hours on my feet all day. When I came home I had some scary symptoms I've never felt or had before with my pregnancy. Everything is fine but it spooked me. For some reason I've put all this pressure on myself to maintain my miles (very slower miles, but around the same number). My doc gave me the okay to run as long as I'm not having symptoms. So I will....just less. Today is a rest day.

Dr. Google and I have concluded that I have shin splints. And it hurts. I don't know if its the weight gain with pregnancy? Cuz I certainly haven't increased my mileage or done speed work in the last 7 months. Here's why I think its shin splints: more pain in the morning (it seems to "warm up" as the day goes on), its more of a generalized area than a localized point, I get bad cramps at night in my calves and I'm pretty sure this has tightened them up quite a bit. My phone is lame. Anywho, the calf cramping at night doesn't help with trying to loosen my calves up. Pace was suuuuper slow. I feel super big. :)

When is the due date? You must be getting close. How are dealing with the calf cramping? My wife is having the same thing, and she says it's driving her batty.

From NatalieK on Mon, Jul 08, 2013 at 16:39:14 from 98.202.32.58

Kam, it truly is enough to drive you batty! My OB said I should try drinking more water. Its easy to get dehydrated right now. Oh and I sucker my husband into giving me calf massages at night. :) Lucky man.

8 weeks left. How is your wife? Is she doing okay with the heat? I have vowed to never get pregnant in December again. :)

Happy fourth!

1 measely old mile. I think my running days are over for the next couple of months. I'm having a LOT of round ligament pain. I feel lucky to have run as far into this pregnancy as I have. Its just not working out. Lots of sharp pain, not worth it. I will continue cross training on the elliptical and stair stepper. I guess that will give my shin plenty of time to heal and I'll be more motivated than ever come September!

Enjoying a nice vacation in Oregon. We've been here since Tuesday. Lots of walking, swimming, hiking. I'm certainly loving the "cooler" weather. This pregnant body doesn't like the heat.

Home from vacationing in Oregon. So pretty. I spent plenty of time walking, hiking, and swimming. (I don't feel quite so pregnant in the water.) I probably won't update this blog very much until after the little man arrives. Not much running will be done between now and then due to sharp stabbing round ligament pain every time I run (sounds delightful and a little too dramatic, maybe I'm just a wuss). Dang, its hard to listen to your body. The next 8 weeks can't come fast enough! (for many reasons)

Decided to try out running again after taking it easy for the last 2-3 weeks. Alternated walking one minute with 2 minutes running for four miles. Average pace was 10:20 min/mile. Super slow. But hardly any round ligament or shin pain, I'll take it!

Baby boy made his appearance 10 days ago. He didnt mess around. My water broke at 12 pm and by 2:30, he was here. 7 lbs, 3 oz, 19 inches. We are already in love.

The last 10 days have been full of getting to know each other (and sleeping....or NOT sleeping). I felt good enough to run last Wednesday (did natural childbirth this time, recovery has been sooooo much better!) but held off until today. I did the whole run a minute, walk a minute thing. Made it 3.2 miles, average pace 12:00 min/mi. Speedy gonzalez eh? I am excited to get back into running but I know it will take time and patience to let my body finish healing. Would love any tips from others on getting back into running after pregnancy?

Speaking of new baby soon...Congrats! I'm glad to hear things went well for you with L&D. Hopefully recovery will also go smoothly. I'm impressed that you are already up and about doing Galloway workouts. It's funny, but 12 minute miles is nothing to sniff at, especially 10 days postpartum.

Be cautious. From head to toe, your ligaments are loosey goosey, thanks to the relaxin hormones that helped your baby come so quickly after labor's onset. Just run easy for at least 3 months while things firm up a bit. You could maybe target a semi-serious half marathon in the spring.

First race post baby. I have a long way to go. I honestly don't think I could have gone much faster than I went today. Considering that I did this course about 18 minutes faster last year, I get kinda overwhelmed thinking how far I have to go.... But, I'm respecting the fact that I had a baby 8 weeks ago and I'm grateful I have been able to jump back into running so quickly.

Now that the disclaimer is over, here's another... :) I had a free entry into this race from last year. When I realized the race date was so close to my due date, I told myself if I was able to run through my pregnancy (check) and have an uncomplicated delivery (check), I'd do the race. Well, it happened. It was hard but it happened. The goal was just to finish strong and give it all I had. I felt like I did both.

I don't know my exact time and here's why. I think I started my garmin to early? (maybe back at the portapotties?! Geez! 1/2 mile, really?) Or I am horrible at running straight. Maybe a little bit of both. I wasn't able to stick around after the race due to a nursing baby so I didn't see my official results. When they are online, I will update.

The longest run I ran leading up to this race was last Saturday, 9.5 miles. I knew it would be hard but I also knew I could do it. My plan was to take it easy the first few miles and gradually increase my speed. I felt great until about mile 10 and then started to feel the lack of training. I kept telling myself, "if I can make it through natural childbirth, I can finish this dang thing!" I tried not to look at my watch because according to it, the race should have ended well before it did.

Here are my splits: 8:38, 8:38, 8:14, 8:52 (and there's the hill!), 8:19, 8:20, 8:29, 8:21, 8:01, 7:57, 7:47, 7:28, 7:29, 3:35

My average pace was 8:09. So how that translates into a 1:50 half, I don't know. I'll be interested to see the official time, especially since I passed the 1:50 pacer at least 2 miles before the race ended. Hmmmm... Then again, I was never very good at math.

Its a good starting point for me. Its good to know where my fitness is at and I'm excited to get better and faster.

Great to see you back out there racing! You are coming back very well and should be pretty happy with this, considering that you have only averaged 20 miles for the last 14 weeks! A half marathon is tough to run without much endurance. Once you get a few more miles under you again, you'll be right back where you were at pre-baby. I am impressed with your finish - you ran a great negative split race.

Tempo run in the afternoon. It was almost too warm! I tried to appreciate it cuz I know it won't last too much longer. Here's the nitty gritty. 1 mile warm up. 6 tempo miles @ 7:59 AP. 2 mile cool down.

Again I was surprised this didn't hurt more. I felt like I had some left in the tank when I was done. Don't know if that's a good or bad thing. ...

Either way, it was an endorphin inducing run. Felt good.

1/2 mile repeats on the treadmill. Repeats were followed by .35 mile recovery. The numbers: 1 mile warm up. 1/2 mi @ 3:55, 3:50, 3:47, 3:45, 3:40, 3:42. Cool down to finish out 7 miles. Average pace 8:49.

This was hard. I felt good the first 3 repeats and probably should have gone faster but I really had to talk myself into doing and finishing the last one.

6 easy miles on the treadmill this morning. I have eye surgery today..... spooky! I've been having double vision on and off that has gotten progressively worse over the last 3 years (look what having children has done to me!). Most people wouldn't run on the day of surgery but I'm crazy like that. I'm super nervous so that's how I deal with it, run it out. I'm sure many of you get it. Wish me luck. By the end of the day, I'll be a pirate.

Slow miles on the treadmill with the eye doc's approval. I was suprised to hear I could run as soon as I felt up to it. No sports with balls for the next little while. Gotta protect this money maker face of mine. (That or just protect my eye....)

Surgery went well. Here's to seeing just one of everything!

Easy slow treadmill miles. Funny experience at the gym today. So my eye is super red from the surgery. I've had a few people ask me if I have pink eye. (I don't) A guy got on the treadmill next to me and I could feel him looking at me. I took a drink from my water bottle and it went down the wrong tube so I started coughing like crazy. After a minute of my coughing attack, he actually got off the treadmill right next to me and moved about 3 treadmills down. Ha! He probably thought I was an infestation of bacteria. Sorry dude. I should have itched my eye and then tried to shake his hand.... :)

Every few weeks I've been doing the same tempo run just so I can see and measure my progress. Here are today's tempo miles compared to the same run 2 and 6 weeks ago. Its an out and back course that starts out downhill so of course, it ends uphill, hence the slow down. Today I really felt that I couldn't go faster. Fun to see progress. I'm a nerd.
