Another long run for me today. It was very windy and I to double back on my route a couple of times today because the streets were flooded. My legs were beginning to ache as they have not adjusted to the longer distances yet. But they will...right??
They will...kind of. Once your body adapts and gains a new level of fitness, 10 miles won't seem quite as bad. Don't get me wrong, you will still have the bad days (there are days when 3 miles is a chore for me), but, for the most part, the longer distances won't trash your legs quite as bad. If I had any suggestions for you, they would be to crank up the mileage slowly so as to avoid injury and pay attention to what your body is telling you in terms of fatigue, stress, nutrition, etc., all of which become more and more critical as the length of your runs increase.
Even at our age you are still building your body up every time you consistantly get out and train. You are building muscle memory. It will hurt everytime you increase on what you normally do, thats good, it means your working hard and improving. After awhile the recovery after a hard effort will be come shorter and less painfull.
There is an ultra runner hidden inside everyone, it's in our DNA.
