Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Pain today better, 0-1 throughout day and night, still on Aleve.  Feeling normal.  I am wanting to get out there and start walking with a plan to start running again, but I need to remind myself this is drug-induced, and on 6-13 my MRI was really bad, so hold off. I'll get advice on how to find out when I am ready from the rheum. and I'll get an appt with dr. mclane in case he isn't sure.

I don't think having a Costco size m&ms bag in my house is working for me.

Officially one week walking, and celebrated by weeding a little in my side yard.  Weeding is so addictive and I probably did a little too much.  Truth be told, I also weeded for about 10 minutes on Monday, back when I had more serious pain. That wasn't so great.  But today the ground was softer and my pain was there but much less (1.75?  Teena I hope you are reading!)  So I started feeling pain from croutching, some SI, but even more the hamstring insertion point - the injury which doesn't go away, not even with months of inactivity.  After weeding that area continued to be sore, but not bad.  Pain today 0-1, with perhaps going to 2 toward the end and after the weeding.

I am very happy to have my homemaking life going back to normal.   I finished laundry on Wednesday, and for the first time in 6 weeks the laundry made it out of the laundry room and into drawers.  That is a major step toward normality--the fact that the kids don't have to go to the laundry room to get dressed.

Woke up at 4am, just because I miss waking up that early, and woke the three kiddies up at 4:15, and we went to the Provo parade route. We picked up 2 dozen donuts, bananas, oj, and choc milk on the way.  The kids fell asleep in sleeping bags since we got there at 5am, and I read.  I cheered on the runners (I was at 500 N and Univ Ave), so just short of mile 3 marker for the 10k.  Lindsey Dunkley was in first for the 5k, and I didn't recognize first in the 10k, though I saw Julie from SLC (can't remember her last name) at about 3-4 and Marianne at about 5th.  I was feeling pretty supportive, for the first 20 minutes of cheering, then I got blue since I was on the sidelines and had already eaten a donut, so I got a second donut and went right to the edge of the race and called out to the runners "I am eating a donut and you are racing."  "My donut tastes so good!!!"  All the racers who noticed me that I could see were good sports about it and one said it did look good and another wanted a bite.  I am afraid I wasn't a very good sport, but the runners took it in stride.  Speaking of which, there was an Uncle Sam on stilts running, and I screamed at him to lengthen his stride.

I've mentioned my lurking bf Lupita before.  Her family is moving to Wisc, land of the cheese heads, they are moving out of their Orem house next week, so spending the day with them was sweet.

Pain 0-1.  Good day.

Paul's birthday eve.  I didn't take an Aleve last night, but pain still 0-1.  Had Paul's brother's family over for dinner and dessert for Paul's bday.

We had a great holiday weekend.  A memorable on for the kids and us.

No pain.

Alrighty.

Went to my rheumatologist again today.  He said that I have AS, that I never had a stress reaction from running, but it was a symptom of AS.  He said I have alot of liquid around my knees and feet, and some bone damage in my feet, active arthritis--he mentioned I had a SID or SED level of 10 the last time I was in, where 1-2 is no big deal, I think that's a measure of your inflammation, but I don't understand the scale or what this really means, and I wished I had asked so if anyone can translate I'd be grateful.  He said that I handle my pain well, for that rate, that I'm not a whiner!  We only experience our own pain so it's hard to know if you are a whiner or not, and I suspected I was a HUGE one, so to be placed on the other end of the scale by a medical profession made my day.  Almost makes up for the bummer diagnosis!

He's putting me on Diclofenac, and said it takes three weeks to start reducing inflammation so he said no exercise for three weeks, and to pay attention to my body (like that my weeding for 15 min shouldn't have made me ache like it did and to back off fast if I feel that way).  He did say that anything less than full functionality would be an unacceptable result in todays day and age, and that he wouldn't be suprised to see me at the OTQ.  He says there's no medication in between the NSAIDS and the expensive Embrel type meds (other than meds that only work in a small minority of AS patients), so I'll be verifying that as part of my research.

I do think I will seek a second opinion, since being on prescriptions, esp expensive prescriptions, may be in my future for decades to come.

I have a trip to Bear Lake at the end of August.  For months I have been saying, I'll be running by the trip to Bear Lake.  If I start walking/crosstraining at the end of July, perhaps I will be able to run for that trip.

Thanks to you who still read my non-running blog.  I'd be a basket case without your support.

0-1 pain, went to Utah Symphony for our date night.  Paul was being goofy the whole time, when we were supposed to clap Paul clapped to the beat of his own drum, but he gave it a fancy name called syncopation.  Had a couple of really light twinge pains as I tossed and turned at night.  I was stressed and dreamt about missing my alarm and the RHPC 1/2 but woke up at 4am just fine.

pain 0-1.  Worked today, and moved my office out of the temporary main level office (for wheelchair and avoiding stairs) back to my basement office!  It is great to be feeling better.  I was exhausted from the 7-8 trips downstairs carrying books and files.  I am definitely out of shape. Had the longest and least "soreful" weeding session today.

pain 0-1.

Had my annual work party today, a dinner for the families, then swimming at the scera pool.  I went down both slides, the steep one is far superior.  I wish I was gutzy enough to do a flip on the diving board.  It was way too cold to be swimming at night.  I had to take a hot shower to raise my bod temp when I got home.

I have been on my NSAID for 8 days today.  I should be able to start a walking/cross training exercise regamin on July 27th.  The rationale is to make sure my inflammation is down (three weeks on NSAIDS) so that any pain when I cross train would be because my prescription is not adequate, especially if I ramp up my training very gradually.  I plan on starting with just some casual walks, then gradually go to aggressive walks, then add in pool running and elliptical, then hopefully some running by end of August.  That's the plan, but its very fluid.  It is nice to have a definite count down, though.

Had my 2nd opinion rheumi appt today.

He's the son in a son/father rheum office.  I liked him quite a bit.

He agrees with the diagnosis of AS.  Great.

He says that my MRI's are consistent with sacroilitis, so an alternate explanation rather than a stress reaction from running.

He says the most crucial treatment is medication.  He says there's no proof of sleeping positions making a difference with AS.  He says a physical therapist can be helpful once I am training, and he doesn't need to be an AS specialist, but at least well read on the position.  He said that Glucosamine w/Chondrotin doesn't directly address AS issues, but it was up to me whether to continue taking it.

We are going to try to preauth for a TNF blocker, the more aggressive drug, since it takes some time for that drug to kick in fully, and just see what my insurance's authorization requirements are for it.

Regarding my question if a flare up = permanent damage, he says there is current research being done to see if inflammation can be decoupled from degeneration, but the jury is largely out.  But if I monitor my pain carefully, then we'll catch any flare ups early and minimize damage and time off.

He asked me what the worst case scenario for this condition is.  I said your spine can fuse in a stooped position and then you can get in a car accident and your spine would snap.  He laughed.  He says that this condition tends to fissle out over time for patients, that fusion of SI is likely long term, and that typically provides great pain relief for patients.  He seemed to think that SI joint fusion wasn't a deal breaker for runners, but conceded that this may only be true for recreational runners when I expressed doubt in that assessment.  Recreational runners - hey that's what I used to be, and it may be what I am headed toward.  But I will get competitive again if I can.

12 days until exercise.

Pain of 1 when he manipulated me, and of 2 when I then rolled off the table, which put me in a foul mood for about 5 minutes.  I'm fine now :)

Pain 1.

We went on Utah Lake with a partner of my firm.  It was sooo awesome.  We haven't been on a boat for a couple of years, we just don't have the connections.  Benji, Paul and JJ knee boarded, and I got in the water, with an orange flag stuck in the back of my life jacket, and helped JJ get on the board, holding onto him as long as possible, it was way fun!  And then we got onto a three person blow up thingy. It was alot of fun.  El Pollo Loco after, I wish there was one closer.

I had a great chat with my mom last night, and decided to get back on the bandwagon.  Starting tomorrow I won't eat after dinner, in an attempt to curb the bulge.

My baby, JJ, turned 5 years old today.  Oh, man, he is getting so old.  He'll be in preschool this fall, I have no babies!  We had blueberry pancakes, sausage, bacon, oj, oranges and kiwi for breakfast, and went to Brick Oven Pizza for dinner (I had one slice and one trip to the salad bar, thank you--ok and three bites of his free birthday dessert).

Today is day one of no food after dinner.  9 days until I get to start exercising. Rock on.

Pain mostly 0.

Except my feet were so sore by the end of the day, and clammy from getting wet from Rattlesnake Rapids, the log ride (way lame), and the catapult ride, which I did at 8:30 and didn't realize until we were in line that we would get wet, and we got SOAKED!

Benji was my extreme ride buddy, except he wouldn't go on Wicked, either Rocket ride, nor Samurai.  Samurai was the most intense, and thus my favorite ride, but it would have been much more fun if I had had someone to ride with and share the thrills with.  My favorite time of the day, however, was on the circular, almost carnival type ride by the Colosus, which JJ, Mickie and I rode right before the park closed.  It was dark and all the rides lit up, and our ride spun in a circle faster and faster, and we all squeeled, and the boys slid into me as the centrifugal force had its way with us, and we could see the rides of the park all lit up.  It was a sweet moment.

My SI joint never complained.  It was a great day!

Anyone have a vote for how many minutes I should start walking on Monday?

My plan in my mind:

Week 1 - I was thinking to walk M, take Tues off, walk W, TH, take F off, then walk Sat.  Just to ease in conservatively.

Week 2 - Walk 6x per week, increasing intensity, and maybe introduce a short ellyptical session in toward the end if I am feeling good.

Week 3 - Continue to walk aggressively, add in light pool running and ellyptical (two a days cross training, but light).

Week 4 - try harder ellyptical and pool running and hard walking,

Week 5 - Keep up cross training, introduce running (probably 5 min after warm up M, tues off, 10 min after warm up W, Th off, 10 min Friday, 20 min Sat).

 Too conservative?  Too aggressive?

Walked 1.7 miles in 32 minutes.  Starting to track my eating with mypyramidtracker.gov, where I will input my eating and exercise for a couple of weeks to help me get back on track and lose weight.  Kind of hard to lose weight just walking like this, but hopefully I'll be able to ramp up my exercise consistently.  I plan on buying a digital scale today.

Pain notched up, 0-2.

2 miles walking with Marion in 39:47.  Marion helped keep the pace easy by stopping every once in a while to demonstrate a yoga pose :)   She's trying to convince me I need to do yoga, but it is so dang time consuming.  I'm sure I can do a 30 minute stretching routine which will give me all that I need and give me the time to train that I need.

I can feel a difference between my two sides but no pain.

I did good with my eating yesterday, and I intend to keep it up.  Part of of losing weight is reteaching your brain that it is ok to be hungry at times during the day, and exercise helps.

I have a digital scale and today's weight is my first morning weigh in.

Yesterday some soreness in SI, slight, but more pronounced than the prior week. It wasn't concerning in itself, if I always had this niggling at this level I would be peachy, but I am concerned that I might be affected by the minimal exercise I've started.  I called the rheum office to see how the preauth for enbrel went, and they hadn't started it, but they submitted it to my insurance yesterday.

Since my soreness was quite low still (1-2 max yesterday) and my exercise is reasonable, I will keep going with it.  One of the things to work out over the next month or two is whether I need enbrel, and I must train, or have a flare up in trying to train, to find that out.

Anyway, today walked 1.7 in 30:05.  Had to remind myself to take the pace easy. 17:41 pace today.  I'll start fast walking next week.

Light abs - easing into core training again - planks, bridge, and superman

2.35 miles walked in 40:05.  17:02 pace, wanting to walk faster.  Walk felt a little better on SI joint.  Some pain at same place in the road as yesterday, but for less long, its like a burning after you get an immunization, not the pain during or right after the shot but the residual burning.  Since it's at the same place in the road, but not at the same place in my walk, it may have to do with slant in road, I'll have to pay attention to this.

I could not fall asleep last night!  I was so hungry, it's like I could feel my body consuming itself.  I've been eating 1700-1900 cal/day this week, and its tough relearning that I will be hungry at times.  I am about to be really full of oatmeal in a few minutes, though.

Woke up an hour late, no time to blog this morning.  Squeezed in 1.65 walk, then off to work.

My hair is fire engine sassy red (Marion says there are pictures on her blog, I'm going to check it out now).  Thank you Marion for being my hair styling/dying/washing/conditioning specialist!
