Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

3 miles walking in 48:11, 16:04 ave pace.  Then weeded for 30 min, then some light stretching.

I can walk fast next week, meaning I can cock my arms up a bit and go in the 15's.  Cool!

I have all the pieces to my elliptical out in the basement on the floor, now I need to inventory and assemble the beast.  I think its the nordictrack elite 1300.  I was suprised it doesn't get plugged in but runs on gerbal power, and I am the gerbal.

Ate out a Chili's last night.  They have some good guiltless selections:  bbq chick sandwich, veggies and a skewer of six shrimp (which I didn't know, but they cost $6something, almost as much as my sandwich).  When we got home from our date,  I spent some time calculating out the PF Change menu (their nutritional info is online, but most dishes are claimed to have 3 servings, I now know that 258x3=774 and 273x2.5=682.5).  So there's quite a few dishes that Paul and I can share, and if we also get hot & sour soup and/or spring rolls, that would be enough food and within caloric guidelines.  I sure like food.

Onto other topics, can anyone name this band?

I’ve been living out of sanity
I’ve been splitting hairs and blurring lines
I am a house that is divided
In my heart and in my mind

I use one hand to pull closer
The other to push you away
If I had two hands doing the same thing
Lifted high, lifted high

I have a broken disposition
I’m a liar who thirsts for the truth
And while I ache for faith to hold me
I need to feel the scars and see the proof

And if we just keep digging we can reach the foundation
Of our souls
And if we just keep cutting all the chains from our hearts
We’ll lose control

And it feels like giving in
It feels like starting over
It feels like waking up, and you know it’s coming
It feels like a brand new day
Open your eyes

Walked 1.25 with family, slow and easy. Since I fasted I made some low fat brownies, which ended up being 228 cal per brownie, and I ate two of them, but Paul and I decided it would be best for them to be a little more fatty (and thus yummy) and to eat less of it.

3.02 of walking, 14:41 ave pace, 14:29 in mile 3.  Can you tell my arms were cocked?  I felt like I could go faster, and did at times, but tried to keep it smooth to minimize impact on joints.  I saw KellieS and KellyB on the Canal Road, I count on seeing friends every morning and would be sad not too.

I have my brother and his wife coming to visit tomorrow through Saturdayish, and my mom, grandma and aunt joining wednesday through saturdayish, so I have some laundry and shopping to do!

3.13 @ 13:47 ave pace.  I dreamt last night that I pigged out on naughty food, and that I walked a 5k race.  I did walk a 5k this morning, but I am not going to pig out on naughty food.  My fridge is packed with fruit!  We are making a carrot cake w/pineapple in it for my brother Adam, who lives in Colorado and is visiting.  I will have a very small slice?  Hopefully we will be taking a hike today.

1.5 mile hike, 53 minutes, up and down switchbacks above WH.

Walked about 1.75.  Went to Teppanyaki yesterday, and it was not very diet friendly.  I ate the onion soup, a couple of bites of the salad, beef and veggies, skipped the rice.  Running around like crazy.  I hope to do a walk with my mom today.

15 min pool jogging, screamed for joy like an idiot when I saw Marion and David come into the pool area, then chewed her ear off for some time.  We talked for 10 minutes and fit in an hour of conversation, if you can imagine the two of us together, talking that fast and furious has got to count for some cross training.  Then walked 3.37.  I can't remember the time.

Walked 5 miles with my brother Adam in the SF river bottoms in 77 minutes, or 15:24, approx.

We also did the Timp caves, so steep 1.5 hike each way, it was hard, but no pain other than dull difference in sides that is very much typical right now.

Ate a Reuben from Gandolfos for lunch :(  I have been bad, but I sure like that sandwich :)))))

then 20 min pool running, more serious intensity this time.  I'll be hitting the pool more this week.  Pool running only unless Marion wants to give me a swim lesson :)

I am sooo wanting to run.

I forgot my medicine (to be taken in two doses) until 6pm last night, so took first dose then and second at 10ish.  I felt some pain on my left SI area, 1-2ish, felt better by this morning.  Marion will say that is psychotic psychosis and I won't argue.

Walking, 3.66 in 48:33, 13:17 ave pace, did a sub 13 minute for the first time, 12:52 in mile 2, in mile three tried to break 13 again, but felt a couple of stabs of SI pain (up to 2) so decided that was not a good idea.

pool ran 30 minutes.  Did Josse's arm resistance form part of the time, and that made my hands hurt after a while.

I am sooo grateful to be able to exercise, to feel strong when I walk, to be able to get my heart rate up.

I am preparing for camping at Bear Lake (ok we are renting a KOA cabin, so it's half camping).  Here's a recipe we have used before and it is soo good so we are doing again http://www.recipezaar.com/Cing-Banana-Boat-53558, It's a banana, choc chip marshmallow dessert.  Yumm!

We are headed up to Bear Lake through Tuesday, so don't expect any posts for a couple of days, but I do plan on lake running, which should be an adventure.  I do plan on eating lots of unhealthy food on the trip, so what does that mean?  I will need to be active during the trip to compensate.  Ahh, it's going to be fun, if a little cold for a lake vacation.

Walked an hour, probably only 4 miles because some was on the beach, where some ladies aparently get together to do on the beach yoga.  They invited me to join, but I told them I don't know yoga (which is true).

We rented an 18ft boat and that was way fun, though I thought I might flip off an die when I was towed on a tube at full speed.  It was very frightening and thrilling.

Then we went to North Beach for several hours.  I ran in the lake for 21.5 minutes.

Then we rented two seadoos, and we had a great time doing that.  Paul and I traded off who was with Benji, who could handle more speed, and Mickie and JJ, who could not.  They all took turns driving.  It was good too introduce them to this.

Then we rented a bike surrey, and our kids rented banana bikes, and we biked to a shake shop, I got a brownie shake (it wasn't that good :( ) and then we went back to the KOA and raced around the park until our hour ran up.  I was wearing a skirt and it would billow up when I biked hard AND I was the one who was steering, so I was holding my skirt with one hand and steering with the other, it was hilarious.

Walked about 5 miles (1:11).  I made biscuits and gravy over an open fire, then we broke camp.

We spent our last beach time on a trampoline over the water, and the kids collecting shells and making sand castles.  Benji challenged me to swim to the white buoys and back (that's where the lake is 8 ft deep.  It looked like a couple lengths of pool, so I agreed.  Well it took me 9 minutes of sometimes frightened swimming to make it out and back.  I didn't actually touch a buoy since I ended up between two, so I didn't get to have a break.  I haven't done this since I was a kid, but at least this wasn't the ocean.  I did get a little paniced at one point thinking, "If I have trouble noone will be able to get to me before I drown,"  but then I told myself that if I had a panic attack I would drown, so stay calm, and I had done backstroke for over 50 minutes in the Lehi pool, so I should be fine, and I was.  I think given the time the distance out and back was about 250m or so.  It was tiring, but more from the swimming scared, than from the distance or effort.

Weight is just a temporary jump from pizza, raspberry shake, brownie shake, bacon cheeseburger & fries, mini reese's cups, smores, biscuits and gravy and cheetos.  Now its back to consuming less than I work off.  Oatmeal is so boring compared to campfire food.  Oh well.

Hey so I got approved to go on Enbrel if necessary.  We'll see how the running goes.

Finished Ellyptical assembly and tried the sucker out, for 11 minutes.  I isolated a part I hadn't screwed in sufficiently and now it runs smoothly.

Also loaded a pick up with dead tree trunks and unloaded them in SF.  Feel the burn!

AM: Walked 2.01 miles @ 13:14 pace, warming up for the frigid waters.  30 minutes of water running.

Marion navigated me up to the reservoir, where we disturbed the fisherman by getting in the cold water.  Marion is a put one toe in, then the other, then one ankle, then the other type of girl.  I walked right in, true I was squealing by the time I got to my pits, but then I was off and running.  Air was about 64, water was colder?  I felt fine for the first 20 minutes but then my brain and legs got less function slowly, Marion can attest that by the end I had trouble putting a sentence together.  I made it to 30 minutes.  I would say with current conditions 25 min is safe, but if the air were 75ish, then that time would likely be suspended.  I was a frozen popsicle when I came out, a frozen popsicle with fish flavor.  Marion got a nice IT band ice, but other than that she was basically my lifeguard, did you get waist deep, babe?  It was great fun, but not the best way to get in water running.  I need to make friends with someone with a pool :)

I need to walk my 5k race course today, and I might even do my first running today.

Midday:Walked another 1.8 with JJ, slow (slower than 20min/mile),

PM Walked 1.83 on my own later (measuring and marking course), immediately thereafter 1.2 on the treadmill, 3 min walking, then 5x1 min run/walk (10:00 for run, felt just right), then 3 min walking cool down.

Total exercise today:  6.34 miles walking, 30 min water running, .5 mile running.  Does this mean I get dessert?

Elliptical for 20 min, then 4.23 miles of walking up in WH, 15 something average, the hills are not conducive to fast walking.

I have no SI pain, but my hamstring injury, which never really went away, is more irritated (about a 2).  Its mid hamstring and at attachment.  It may be the walking in WH -very hilly and exhausting, and my rheum said to walk flat (I've been pretty good about that until yesterday and marking this course).

I did no specific workout, but I was in charge of Woodland Hills Days races, and I did about a mile of running all day long.

Marion was kind enough to wake up at the butt crack of dawn to help me set up and saved the race from insufficient-volunteer-meltdown.  I appreciate her coming!  She is so generous and a great friend.

Since it was Woodland Hills Days, there were activities all day long, and our house is right by the park where the festivities are, so Marion's hubby DD came up with their three boys and they spent the day with us (community breakfast, pet parade, children's carnival).  I was about ready to melt into the half dead grass by the end of the very hot afternoon.  I won't tell how Marion and I each bought a gourmet brownie, and shared them (ok, she gave part of her's to David).

I am quite sure I walked at least 5 miles today, between the walking back and forth from my house, the race directing, and evening walking.

In the evening we had a community dinner, then the kids hung out at the park and played with their friends for 2 hours.  JJ brought his bike to the park and he learned how to ride without his training wheels for the first time, and he was so good at it.  So I ran along side him on the road (he's not so good at stopping and there were occasional cars), so even though my running was more like 30 sec segments, I think I still got my 8 minutes of running in.  I plan on running 1 mile straight through on Monday.

Walked 3.25, then ran 1 mile, then walked 2.5.

Total walking 5.53, 13:12 ave pace

Total running 1 mile, 10:20.  It was not the most glorious reintroduction to road running I could have imagined.  I felt so heavy!  The extra weight is so much more noticable when running than when walking.  By the end my upper ham and SI joint were painful with each strike, though it was low level pain (about a 2 at most).  I tried to enjoy running outside, but it was a bit depressing to feel so out of shape and to not be able to go sub 10 (of course I could have, but it was not supposed to be a hard mile, and unfortunately that's where I am).

Sept 9 is my next rheum appt.  If I felt great today I would have run a mile a day this week, but I think my next mile will be on Wed on the treadmill instead, to try to mitigate a bit of the pounding.

Lots of stretching and (some, not lots of) abs.

No pain yesterday while just walking around.

Since had some pain yesterday, decided to not run again until tomorrow.

Started my walk with some pain on the lower outside of hamstring, which persisted but didn't get worse (1-2).

I saw Pat (stopped and chatted) and TylerS in my first mile.  After a mile walking warm up, I did some hill intervals, race walking style.  There's a .25 hill stretch, where I pushed for three portions of that .25, then easy on the way down, but I kept my overall pace under 13mm the whole time.  Did this up and down 6 times, for three miles there, then one mile back to the car (also sub 13).  This was my first walk with back to back sub 13, and it was for four miles.  Ave pace 12:49  I can almost walk as fast as I can run :D

I wonder how much more life people could get out of their legs if they never did St. G?  5 years maybe? Pat and I discussed this.

Afternoon: 31 min elliptical, 6 min easy (level 1 then 2, then three), then 1 minute @ level 5, 1 min @ level 3, twelve times, then two min cool down

Evening: walked 1 mile then stretching and planks, outside bottom hamstring still bugging me.  I have an appt with Orrock Fri afternoon.

Celebrated JJ going to his first day of kindergarten by sleeping in!  Not only that, but Paul wanted to go to bed early since he had to wake up early, so I was in bed by 9:20 and woke up at 7:20--heaven!

I walked around the WH park, but when I got into the foresty area there was my neighbors wolfdog guarding the path, and he didn't move when I said hi, so I turned myself around, walked home and called the neighbor.  She brought him in and I was able to resume my walk. Walked 3.30 outside, including a hearty stretching stop (you know you are stretching when you are wimpering).  Then hopped on treadmill, walked another mile, then started RUNNING (ok jogging).  Ran one mile in 9:53, felt much better than my road mile on Monday, but there was just a tinge of tenderness in my right SI area.  One mile seems so long to me!  It is weird how half a year ago I would do half marathon easy runs without thinking it was long, but now one mile seems long.

I am under 140 again!  And I'm going to stay there!  Only about 15 more pounds until I don't feel like I am carrying around saddlebags.

I think I will drive in my Onion Days application today, to save myself the online fee and so I can get a sugar free iceee, a treat that won't come back to haunt me.

Evening, abs, stretching and roller on my lower right ham, still hurty.

AM:  Power walked 5.8, 13:00 ave pace, outer low hamstring still achy.  Stretched after first mile.

PM: 30 min elliptical workout that just about did me in: 2 min at each of these levels in this order: 2,3,5,7,4,6,8,3,5,7,4,6,8,3,2.  It was really tough, but I got that great, post workout buzz:

I AM QUEEN OF THE WORLD!!! (ok that may be taking it too far, but I feel good :) ).

AM: Met MacK early so had time for some serious walking.  We walked 2 then ran 1, felt better than Wed or Mon, but still some slight niggle at top hamstring and some slight burning/sore feeling at SI.  Then MacK and I split.  I didn't have my gps watch so I used course tool to see how far I had gone after the fact.  My stomach was SOOO hollow by the end of my run.

On my scale, with Paul present, I was saying no whammies, no whammies, and I was sub 140 (140 or above would be a whammy), and my best weight since my peak, so I am going into the weekend happy!

PM: PT, pain in lower ham is just that, not IT band.  Did standard stuff, and for exercise: 3 min walk, 3 min tramp run, 1 min walk/run x5, 1 min walk, stretching in and out of cage.  Pace on treadmill 6-6.6 mph.

Walked the 5 mile loop around the SF riverbottoms, the had some gatorade, then did 3 more miles.  I saw MacK and Josse after I finished my walk.  I thought another two girls were Merri and Josse, and I said hi like they were, but then it wasn't them, so that was embarrassing, but then I got to see them anyway.

Overall 8.1, 1:41:48, or 12:34 ave pace

31 min elliptical, then stretching, then 1 mile walk on treadmill, then 2 miles of run.  While running my SI/piri area started with very low level pain which increased gradually, to about 2-3 by the end, just short of form-altering.  Bad news.  Then I weigh 140.  I think today is going to be a Monday :(

Plan for the week is 2 on M, W, F and 1 on TTHS.  I don't think I will alter even if there is pain because I have ramped up reasonably, and I have a rheum appt on 9/9 so if I am going to have a flare and need to go to embrel, I might as well have it this week.
