Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Weight is just a temporary jump from pizza, raspberry shake, brownie shake, bacon cheeseburger & fries, mini reese's cups, smores, biscuits and gravy and cheetos.  Now its back to consuming less than I work off.  Oatmeal is so boring compared to campfire food.  Oh well.

Hey so I got approved to go on Enbrel if necessary.  We'll see how the running goes.

Finished Ellyptical assembly and tried the sucker out, for 11 minutes.  I isolated a part I hadn't screwed in sufficiently and now it runs smoothly.

Also loaded a pick up with dead tree trunks and unloaded them in SF.  Feel the burn!

That sounds so good, my mouth is watering. I think I am overdue for a junk food blowout....

Thanks for 'taking us' on vacation. I love reading about vacations. It's almost as good as going on one. Sounds like you had a great time. It's hard though, to come down off vacation eating. I hope it was good for your soul to be with your family and out in the open air every day!

That's good. I assume the NSAID is working well for you and not giving you any grief. Perhaps that is enough...

It has been fine. I try to remember to take it with food. Yesterday I had some pain in the middle of my walk (low level, around 2.5 miles-2.75, but then it went away). Toward the end of my 1.75 mile stretch of driving, in stop and go traffic, my SI started aching again. Things like that make me concerned that when I start pounding the pavement the NSAID won't be enough, but perhaps it will, and there's only one way to find out.

That sounds like my daily diet Michelle, of course your missing the Cherry Pepsi to go along with the bacon cheesburger, yummy;-)

Pain or stiffness comes and goes. I'm pretty stiff today, and will be tomorrow too (Thursday is injection day), but that's not going to stop me from cranking out an 11-mile tempo. It's just part of life now.

For me and running, the inflammation of my tendons (enthesitis) was much more hobbling and debilitating than SI or low back pain or stiffness. Mobic did not help my enthesitis, but it went away with my first week of Enbrel. Then I could do hard workouts again, without that hitch in my step. But on NSAIDs alone, I could get up to 50-70 mpw at a lower intensity. The pounding was not an issue. I ran 3 half marathons while on NSAIDs alone, so it's definitely doable. But hey, everyone's different.

It is awesome that you are able to do things again without being so miserable. Keep up the good work.

Paul is right. Although I don't have to deal with AS - I had 5 years of constant ankle pain no matter what I did and just learned to live with it in between surgeries.
