Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Kids started coughing yesterday, and this morning I woke up with a little bit of a sore throat.

AM: 8.18 total. On my own for speed. I hate to do speed alone. I was going to do 3x2miles at threshold with 2 min rest, but between my little sore throat and my slow warm up I decided to cut it to 2x2 miles. I ran just over 2 miles then started into the workout at the mile 3 marker of the Speedy Spaniard, toward the rodeo complex.

1 - 11:55 (5:53, 6:01) Toward the end of the first mile, it looked like I was headed for 6:26 by my garmin and I was going to throw in the towel, but by the road markers it was 5:53, so I kept going.

2 - 12:33 (6:08, 6:25) Reversed directions to make it slightly uphill and into the wind (especially the second mile) So the first mile was about the same effort as the first two. Mile 4 was just a stinker and I obviously did poorly, so I'll count it as marathon pace.

Overall I am not displeased since I was considering bagging the whole workout in the first mile. I tend to not do the best workouts inside the week of a race, so I'm just keeping consistent on that front :)

I have been taking Zicam to try to not get a full-fledged cold.

PM: I did a run in Orem with no watch and no idea how long the run was. I was praying it would be at least 3 miles, and it was 3.62 when I mapped it on the course tool. Then I went to Josse's house all sweaty so she could give me a sports massage. She worked me over real good :) Thanks Josse!

My husband and kids are no longer going to St. George so that turns St. George into a PAR-TAY! (Well a party for masochists).

Darn little cute walking petrie dishes. Good luck fighting the cold Michelle, I feel like I have been battling one for the past couple weeks. I hope you (and the kids) are able to keep rested. Good luck on Saturday! I wish you were running TOU half (or I was running Hobble Creek!) - What am I going to do for the 12 mile uphill without you yelling (errrr ... encouraging) me?

Take care of yourself. I kinda started to get a sore throat on sunday but if feels like it has gone away. I cant wait to see how you do this weekend? Did you ever get my private message I sent you about maybe getting together on friday night? I have no idea what your or josse's plans are but it would be fun to maybe go to dinner or something. Let me know what you think.

Bonnie - you'll have to yell at yourself. And here's a suggestion, "You can rest on the downhill!" since there is a downhill after the up. The great thing is when you finish the uphill, you turn left and can see the finish at the end of the downhill, and you will be motivated to kick at that point.

Marcie - I didn't see that PM. Sorry! I'll talk to Paul about it. I'd love to host a pasta party but I'm not so sure Paul would "love" (ie tolerate) that, and we live kind of far away from alot of people.

Do you want to stay at my house with Josse for the marathon? Well friday night we would stay up in Pine Valley so we can sleep in a little bit. We could have a serious party!!!

And I didnt mean for you to host a party. Just thinking maybe go to dinner or something. Totally dont have to. I have to go get my wedding ring cleaned and checked at Losses and I was just going to stop at pizza fact and get some pasta or something.

From MichelleL on Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 11:34:08

Thanks for the invite Marcie. Josse and I talked about it yesterday, and here are my needs for the night before the race: My own bed (unless I am sharing a king size, I have a king right now and if I can't sleep I don't want to bug the person next to me) and the ability to go to bed early (a room with a door I can close, and not too much noise around me, I think last time you stayed up there you said you stayed up a little too late and it was a party type atmosphere). So if you have these type of amenities available then sure, but I think I'm being picky enough that a hotel room is the answer.

Regarding Friday evening, I would like to, but I have to work in Orem that day, and then I need to be home, then to eat in Provo I would have to drive back, which is more than 2 hours of driving all told, so I don't think I can meet in Provo. If you get into town early you can give me a call--I might still be at work. I could hop over to Losse's and get my ring cleaned. I have been meaning to, but haven't taken the time. Do you still have my phone #? I have you programmed into my phone. Oh yeah, and Steve most likely won't have my shoes (two pairs) by Friday morning but there's no harm checking with him when you go to the store. Bring your warm up jacket/long sleeve shirt and gloves because it might be way cold up on top and then we can match!

I think you will be better off staying in a hotel room. I dont want to feel responsible if you dont get a good nights rest. Last year we got to bed around 9:30-10:00 and no party, just some chit chatting on the couch. There was only 3 of us. But the beds are twin beds (mine squeaked a little last year) and defintely no courtyard marriott bed!! I dont think I have your number, text it to me. I will plan on just seeing you at the race start and my jacket is already packed!
