Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

AM: Walked 2.01 miles @ 13:14 pace, warming up for the frigid waters.  30 minutes of water running.

Marion navigated me up to the reservoir, where we disturbed the fisherman by getting in the cold water.  Marion is a put one toe in, then the other, then one ankle, then the other type of girl.  I walked right in, true I was squealing by the time I got to my pits, but then I was off and running.  Air was about 64, water was colder?  I felt fine for the first 20 minutes but then my brain and legs got less function slowly, Marion can attest that by the end I had trouble putting a sentence together.  I made it to 30 minutes.  I would say with current conditions 25 min is safe, but if the air were 75ish, then that time would likely be suspended.  I was a frozen popsicle when I came out, a frozen popsicle with fish flavor.  Marion got a nice IT band ice, but other than that she was basically my lifeguard, did you get waist deep, babe?  It was great fun, but not the best way to get in water running.  I need to make friends with someone with a pool :)

I need to walk my 5k race course today, and I might even do my first running today.

Midday:Walked another 1.8 with JJ, slow (slower than 20min/mile),

PM Walked 1.83 on my own later (measuring and marking course), immediately thereafter 1.2 on the treadmill, 3 min walking, then 5x1 min run/walk (10:00 for run, felt just right), then 3 min walking cool down.

Total exercise today:  6.34 miles walking, 30 min water running, .5 mile running.  Does this mean I get dessert?

I just got out of the shower and am feeling a bit warm, finally (it's 9:30). Are you warm yet? You were frozen to the CORE!!!

OK - I would be even more of a wuss than Marion - I can't stand cold feet. Awesome job and above and beyond the call of duty on reservoir running, Michelle.

Wish I could make your 5K - but another race is calling my name.

It looks like you are getting back and that you will be running soon. I can't believe you ran in that reservoir-- that is freezing.

Bonnie- Michelle and I will be right down!!

Bonnie - you will have fun with your pool, and it will be a great place to cross train. I'm jealous ;D

Kellie - I got roped into heading up the Woodland Hills Days races tomorrow, a bike 5k, a run 5k and a kids mile. My head is spinning with it. I sure hope I am in serious training next summer so I can bow out. I like putting on races but they are alot of work.

Glad to hear you are back out on the roads. Lori has said she has seen you a couple of time on River Bottom road.

Was this the reservoir above the SF golf course? I love swimming there, great place to train for a triathlon. I always wear a wetsuit though, it is very cold. Good Luck with the continued recovery.

How did it feel to finally be running again? Glad it went well.
