Since yesterdays tempo was maybe a little harsh, gotta follow the rule of for every hard day, have an easy day. So today I kept it easy, 68 minutes of elliptical hell. Easy/medium effort.

Ran 4 easy miles outside at an 8:27 pace,  wore tracks on. Freezing. Holy shizzle.

If you need a little laugh, read todays workout post here

Smart smart... you've got what, around 14 weeks or so until Boston? That's a lot of time... so its important the take the "easy days easy" rule seriously.

From Lily on Thu, Jan 03, 2013 at 09:27:41 from 67.199.178.95

I have a plan for all this. I got a major reminder reading this book that I need to have easy days intermixed with any hard day. I feel I have to do this to avoid getting hurt. Besides, I made a goal to run every single day of 2013, can't do that being injured! :)

From Andrea on Thu, Jan 03, 2013 at 09:28:00 from 72.37.171.52

Great workout yesterday. Hard days hard, easy days easy!

From Andrea on Thu, Jan 03, 2013 at 09:32:19 from 72.37.171.52

As I'm getting back into training, I'm planning to get on a cycle of two easy days after every hard day - plenty of time to recover after each stress and be ready for the next workout.

From Lily on Thu, Jan 03, 2013 at 09:34:21 from 67.199.178.95

Good plan Andrea. You should read this book I've been reading. It's funny but has so many good reminders!

From Rachelle on Thu, Jan 03, 2013 at 09:50:40 from 199.190.170.22

68 minutes on the elliptical sounds so ridiculously HARD in my opinion. haha you know how I loathe the elliptical. ;)

Great advice by Andrea! The harder your hard days are the slower the easy days should be.

From JulieC on Thu, Jan 03, 2013 at 18:26:41 from 207.108.176.238

Lily so glad you are back and energized with speed and injury-less!!! :D. Okay-- you are the elliptical queen. I just added my 8.5 minute elliptical afternoon workout to my latest entry and wonder what the heck...only 0.45 miles in that time??? I was pushing hard but really???????? I was in my clothes and high heels but I was sweating!!! am I just not doing it right???

From JulieC on Thu, Jan 03, 2013 at 18:27:22 from 207.108.176.238

That's the way. Get it done regardless of the weather. Its how you set yourself up for a big spring. I think the cold weather stretches like that are, in some ways, an advantage for us. You find out how bad you want it during the winter.

You have some serious determination, thats very inspiring. I'm the kind of person that sleeps with a down comforter in July, always cold. I can't even fathom how you made yourself take the first step out the door. Way to be committed Lily!

From Lily on Sat, Jan 05, 2013 at 19:58:18 from 67.199.178.95

Ahh thanks matt and Rachel. Not going to lie, the first mile outside was kind if painful. And my chest has hurt off and in all day presumably from the smoggy air. This is going to be tough.

From Rachelle on Sat, Jan 05, 2013 at 20:28:44 from 76.8.202.193

Way to go Lily. I was complaining about the cold this am before we started and JulieC reminded me that Dean Karnazas ran a marathon in -100 degree weather on the north pole. It really is running in conditions like today that build character and make us stronger.

I don't know how you do so much time on the EL, it just wears me out. Do you vary the incline and resistance? Do you mix the strides foreward and backward? I need some EL training advice :-)

From Lily on Tue, Jan 15, 2013 at 14:49:31 from 67.199.178.95

IJustrun buddy, elliptical hell is approached with lot's of loud, fast, music. With varying speeds, and forward backward motion. It's easy to do when there is a 12 inch tv attached to the front of it. I zone out to the tv. Oh, and people watch. There is a lot of weirdos around!

From RachelT on Tue, Jan 15, 2013 at 14:54:25 from 24.10.224.129

Well since you are handing out advice I want to ask, do you prefer to do running first and then elliptical, or the other way around? I just got a gym pass and want to try and incorporate some elliptical hell into my life.

From Lily on Tue, Jan 15, 2013 at 14:56:41 from 67.199.178.95

Rachel, I do the elliptical first usually. I started doing this in 2010 to teach my legs to run when already a little tired. I think it's made me a much stronger runner and endurance athlete.

From Lily on Tue, Jan 15, 2013 at 14:58:48 from 67.199.178.95

I also want to add something. I know I've shared this a few times before. I also use the elliptical to help create a wide aerobic base in my training. You can never have enough aerobic training when trying to progress as a road racer. That's my story and I'm sticking to it! :)

From Lily on Tue, Jan 15, 2013 at 15:02:39 from 67.199.178.95

Oh, and one more thing. I use the elliptical in the spring and summer as well. I will wake at at 4:45, get to the gym by 5, and use the elliptical for 40-50 minutes. Then I leave and go back home and run outside. I have several routes close by my house. If I am tapering for a long distance race, I will stay off the elliptical that week and taper down the running (I do lower miles, but semi fast miles)

From RachelT on Tue, Jan 15, 2013 at 15:13:24 from 24.10.224.129

My older sister is a Pulmonologist, I called and asked her if it's okay to be running outside during this inversion. Her reply was never even in your dreams. It's doing more harm than good. I am not trying to sway anyone on the blog at all. I am just saying I won't be running in it until it clears up some....which should be tomorrow morning. I am so out there you guys, and stoked!

From Andrea on Wed, Jan 23, 2013 at 15:30:52 from 72.37.171.52

I have to agree and disagree. In the early mornings, particulate pollution is much lower (see the first graph, want to be below the orange line http://www.airquality.utah.gov/aqp/trend_charts/getData.php?id=slc). It is highest at about 1pm. It's still moderate pollution in the mornings, yes, but not unhealthy according to the scale. I would definitely not recommend running at 1pm when it gets that high, but I could argue the benefits of running outweigh the risks.

From Lily on Wed, Jan 23, 2013 at 16:57:46 from 67.199.178.95

Andrea I actually agree with you. And she did mention the early mornings hours are better. I'm sure she's just being aggressive doctor with her assertions. She sees the sick of the sick. I'm sure its hard to seperate the dangers to those who are predisposed and those who aren't.

From AngieB on Wed, Jan 23, 2013 at 17:01:40 from 159.212.71.77

I am so totally here with ya on the air thing. I knew a guy that ran everyday of his life (never smoked)and he got lung cancer they think it was from running in the inversions his whole life. This scared me enough to stay inside even if my treadmill is boring.

From AngieB on Wed, Jan 23, 2013 at 17:02:53 from 159.212.71.77

Just read Andreas reply and I totally agree with Andrea morning running is the best.

From Carina on Wed, Jan 23, 2013 at 18:07:29 from 204.15.86.83

When I was at the Dr. yesterday I asked him about inside vs. outside running. He said there really isn't a difference in the air quality. He said that the filters we have in our furnaces don't get the dangerous toxins out of the air, mostly just the dust. Though the cold isn't helpful if you have a hard time breathing so the benefit of running indoors is just that it's warmer.

From Jake K on Wed, Jan 23, 2013 at 18:23:29 from 67.177.11.154

I see where you sister is coming from. For general average person, who isn't necessarily concerned with running fast races, its definitely a lot safer to avoid outdoor exercise during periods like this.

But then if performance is more important than general health, the benefits might outweigh the negatives in terms of being able to get in good training. When it comes to preparing to really "race" the marathon, a lot of things might not be considering "healthy" from a holistic point of view :-)

I find that being out early in the mornings and away from busy roads (the pollution tends to pool/settle near higher traffic corridors) is key. I even start to get a little headache in the afternoons when its this bad outside.

In any case, your Boston buildup is looking really good so far Lily!!!

Total Distance

8 miles outside. Left at 5 am. Did 15x1 min on/offs. It was 23 degrees when I left. 23 degrees never felt so warm :) I had to shed my second pair of gloves. I definitely need to do more running outside. I could tell. I have no idea my paces. It was too dark and my headlamp batteries were dying 2 minute into the run. I ran without any light. I felt empowered being out there though.

Went to the gym afterwards and did 32 min of elliptical hell. My fav~

Woke up at 4:45 looked outside. The roads were clear, no sign of snow yet. Dressed and got all my warm clothes on, headlamp, garmin etc. Got outside and the snow had just started falling. Ran a 7:20 mile to warm up, then a 7:02, and SLAM! I hit black ice and slammed my knee and pinky. Got up and turned around and went another way. By that time snow was accumulating my road, and by the minute I was ice skating more and more. I got over it. 3 miles outside. Went home changed into shorts, tank. Got some warm stuff on and went to the gym.

Had no time to mess around and felt determined as ever. 5 mile tempo straight through. 6:39 6:39 6:35 6:30 6:25. I DID IT!!!! I held a 5 mile. Woooohoooooooooo!

Legs were way sore yesterday and today. Decided to get on an elliptical to warm up before I tried to run any. So I did that for 55 minutes.

Then I did 10x1 min on/off 5:52 pace. Didn't feel to bad at all. I was surprised. Only did 10 because I ran out of time. Gotta get home and get kids off to school.

I need to get back into the habit of taking BCAA capsules on long run days or hard tempo/speed days. They prevent soreness and speed up recovery/repair. They work!

From Lily on Thu, Jan 31, 2013 at 17:33:09 from 67.199.178.95

From DaleG on Thu, Jan 31, 2013 at 17:35:05 from 152.216.11.5

Great, I'm looking at it now on the website. Thanks, Lily.

From DaleG on Thu, Jan 31, 2013 at 18:28:48 from 152.216.11.5

A year or two ago, I bought some Jack3d from GNC and it turns out there is a banned substance, DMAA (methylhexanamine), in the product. DMAA is on the World Anti-Doping Agency's list of prohibited substances, according to a Runnersworld article from yesterday.

I tried it one time before a long run I was going to do at night after my family went to bed. I took it about an hour before the 18 mile run and it felt like I had A LOT more energy than usual. I was all shaky and jittery. I finished the run and I still had a few hours before bed, which was great because I could unwind. Well, by the time I went to bed, it had been nearly seven hours since I took that product and I was STILL wired. I couldn't sleep at all that night and I had a massive headache. I never used it again. Scary stuff.

Total Distance

14 miles even this Friday morning. Alone.  Left by 5:30. The roads here in my neighborhood and most of all of Spanish Fork are all pretty dry now. There are a couple of slick spots, but majority were good. Had a good run. Went up the hill of Center street around mile 4. It's a mile long uphill. Then turned around and ran back down it. It was a good workout for me for sure.

My pubic symphysis has been kind of making itself known during longer runs lately. I am kind of sore today :(

I felt good about getting outside and keeping a good pace during my long run today. BCAA capsules before and just took a couple more.

7.50 on the river trail. 1.5 miles of warm up. Then 10x1 min on/offs that kicked my rear. I always feel like a failure when I do speed workouts. I really don't know why.

The river trail is being worked on up at the top where it's fenced off, to connect to the other trail system that goes up to Canyon View Park. Which is near the mouth of S.F. Canyon.  I am so excited! The trail is going to be connected by the time summer is here and I should be able to run 7-10  (or more) continuous miles, and it's off the road in the river bottoms,  before I have to stop and flip around! Stoked! Awesome! So excited! So blessed to live by this trail!

Core work, some strength training, rubberband stuff etc at home.

It's hard to imagine your core isn't rock solid, with all the xt you do...I wonder where the instability is coming from. Throttling back on the speed is smart, just maintain the cardio intensity in incline.

From Lily on Wed, Feb 27, 2013 at 09:39:45 from 166.137.210.30

Kam my adductors are strained :(

Total Distance
7.50

7.5 outside recovery run. Felt slower than slow and I let that bother me to much. I always hurt after speed workouts (like yesterday & Saturday) and now I am remembering back to Summer 2011 when every time I tried to do more speed my low back would teeter. So I think I am going to go back to just trying to run a good effort everyday and forget the crazy speed workouts. It's not serving my body well at this point. I am going to work on getting my cadence to a good clicking effort each day and keep it at 7-8 miles. When UVM is close, I will add in 2 long run days a week. I should be good to go. Better than getting injured.

Wearing 5 lbs of extra clothes is bugging me. I want it warm now! I feel so bogged down outside. UGH!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, around 5 miles, a dude that lives in my neighborhood came trotting up next to me and said something. Scared the hello out of me. I had headphones on so I screeched out loud. Keep in mind this was 6:15 in the morning. Holy motha!  Kyle runs, has run some long distance races, done some tri's, an ironman and I believe a 50 mile. He works with Davey Crockett. He took great delight in saying "YES! I get to tell everyone that I caught up to Lily". Recovery runs suck!

From Neasts on Wed, Feb 27, 2013 at 10:40:47 from 75.169.63.62

Such a nice job on your workouts lately (well, always, really). My lower back also hurts when I do speed, which is why I don't do much of it at all. I always thought it was because I do absolutely nil in the core department, but you do strength exercises and have similar problems. All the stress we put on ourselves, I wouldn't trade it. When you figure out the cure, let me know. :-)

From RachelT on Wed, Feb 27, 2013 at 12:27:43 from 24.10.224.129

Smart woman. One of the major benefits I've found of having kept a running log over the years is that I can look back and see that no, injuries didn't kill me, and yes, I was able to get back to form quicker than I thought. There is one particular meat head at my gym that continues to tell me I don't run correctly. I tell him I run 10 miles on the TM and he tells me that only really equates to 5 miles... He is HUGE and I don't know why he would ever give advice to any runner.

No more philosophizing until summer! I also notice that my font is changing as I go on. What is happpening here?!?!

Easter is just the best candy season, you can't argue with that! All the other seasons just change the colors/packaging - but Easter brings new items to the table (shelf)! :-)

HA JAKE! This is true! Cadbury mini eggs are only around once a year. Yum-0!

They're so good! But why are they more expensive that other chocolates? They should be the same as M&Ms, but are always at least $.50 to $1.00 more!

Oh, please don't stop philosophizing, you are so funny!! My special candy season is Christmas, when all my family and friends know that I love Candy Cane Kisses. Thankfully, I can get Krabby Patties year round. Jeesh, I do not need to be thinking about candy so early in the morning. :-)

Last year I went a little too crazy on the Easter candy. I think I gained 5 lbs the week of Easter. Fatty McGee I was the fattest. This year I am being disciplined. I haven't bought a little bag of mini eggs for myself yet. Mini eggs now...saddle bags later!

From Lily on Wed, Mar 06, 2013 at 09:11:05 from 67.199.178.95

Kam, I actually bought a giant bag of each of those. My favs! I put them in a plastic bin to save or Easter and had my husband put it in the crawl space. I am scared of the crawl space. Deterrent successful.

20 minutes of Strength training.

40 minutes of elliptical. Really hard effort that wore me out before I ran.

Came home and ran 6.5 outside, up the Center Street hill and back down. So hard. I know I didn't run my usual 7-8 miles today, but the efforts were hard enough that I felt like I did 10 miles.

I'm sitting here eating breakfast and trying to type. I keep dropping my precious scrambled eggs into my lap. Where's my coordination? Speaking of food. What kind of diet does everyone eat? Leave a comment and tell me how/what you truly eat everyday. I am curious about other runners diets.

From bdase on Thu, Mar 07, 2013 at 09:16:35 from 160.7.242.251

Great workout Lily! Whole foods, lots of fresh fruits vegetables. No white sugar or white flour. No dairy. A gallon of water a day. I have been experimenting since the first of the year with no meat. I have ate some elk from last fall hunting season but not much. I'm not perfect all the time and do have a treat once in a while but i try to keep it as clean as i can.

I don't consider it a diet, it's just what i do and how i eat. Good habits are built over time. My body responds very well to what I'm doing. I always have more than plenty to eat :).

From Lily on Thu, Mar 07, 2013 at 09:16:49 from 67.199.178.95

From Neasts on Thu, Mar 07, 2013 at 09:22:19 from 75.169.62.136

My problem is that I eat too much or too little. I've got a pretty average diet and my weight has been pretty stable over the years, but the diet is not nearly as balanced as it should be. I aspire to eat like bdase but I usually end up eating an egg burrito instead of oatmeal. And lots of sugar and white flour and dairy. Not a lot of meat.

From AngieB on Thu, Mar 07, 2013 at 09:32:59 from 159.212.71.200

Lots of chic fil a and Inn and out Burger (its true). I am trying to stay away from those 2 places now that I have high cholesterol and the MA at my drs office told me I need to start doing cardiovascular excersice atleast 4 days a week.

From Rachelle on Thu, Mar 07, 2013 at 09:33:56 from 199.190.170.24

I like to call my diet "normal"...whatever that means right? I use food to fuel my body and if I am hungry I eat. That said I am pretty 80/20 - I eat really healthy (fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, ect) but I do not obsess about it. If I have a race coming up I pay more attention to my diet, if I'm not racing (like right now) I am a little more laid back.

Obsessing about food or specific diets in my opinion leads to disordered eating...disordered eating leads to eating disorders...been there done that and not going back! :)

From Ericka on Thu, Mar 07, 2013 at 09:55:11 from 24.2.87.24

I've trained both ways.. Not such a good diet and eating to fuel my workouts. I have to say life is much better when I eat what my body needs. I try to follow a "food cube" diet as much as possible. Protein, good fats and non starchy veges. I'm a cheater and have treats, of course. And I eat dairy and meat.

From Lily on Thu, Mar 07, 2013 at 10:14:31 from 67.199.178.95

This is all good stuff. I am looking into schooling right now. To study sports nutrition. This stuff really fascinates me.

This is how I eat most of the time. I am like Rachelle 80/20. However, summer 2010 and 2011 I was %100. If you think I am making that up you can ask my Husband. I ate only non starchy Vegetables, low sugar Fruits and lean meats. Mostly Fish. Almonds and avocados. No dairy. That's it. I have a theory as to what eating like this %100 of the time did for me. It helped me during longer races because eating this way (sans white sugar, white flour and processed foods) helped my body became a master at switching into a fat burn for fuel when the glycogen ran out. Especially in 2010. I knew this was a lot of my success in long distance. At TOU in 2010 I never hit a wall like I saw a lot of other people. I never felt like I didn't have energy to go on. Even to the finish. Maybe that's just my body, but I find it very very interesting.

From AngieB on Thu, Mar 07, 2013 at 10:22:21 from 159.212.71.200

From AngieB on Thu, Mar 07, 2013 at 10:27:10 from 159.212.71.200

Where do you get them at?

From Kam on Thu, Mar 07, 2013 at 10:27:19 from 68.66.163.179

It is interesting. I know my regular diet is pretty poor, but I don't think it has much effect on my running. I am so far away from being GOOD, straightening out my diet is down on the list of improvements to make that would have an impact on finishing times.

It's hard to eat clean when you have a lot of food allergies. Nuts, out. Pome fruits, out. (that rules out larabars) And yeah, I'm allergic to broccoli. My doctor says I can't eat it.

Maybe if I didn't drink mtn dew, I could have shaved off 30ish seconds last fall...PSSSHTT!! glug, glug, glug, Ahhhh.

From Lily on Thu, Mar 07, 2013 at 10:36:28 from 67.199.178.95

Brandon I don't call it a diet either. It's my diet, as in what I eat regularly, all through the year. I just have Friday night out to eat meals with my husband, and a treat if I feel like it ;) the rest stays the same.

My diet's been a roller coaster because I have some weird intestinal issue the Drs can't seem to figure out. Now we're thinking it's celiac, so no wheat/gluten for me! With that being said, I'm addicted to: banana's foster uber bars, passion fruit chobani, and super cheesy kale chips. I eat super clean (lots of fresh fruits and veggies and lean protein) and drink 1-2 fruit/veggie smoothies a day. I do notice if I eat "too clean" I am low on energy. Also, somehow a hard chocolate snack (e.g., gluten free brownie) the night before a long run leads to a killer long run. :) I eat all day long because I'm always hungry, and am now noticing switching from 3 meals a day to 4 helps not having to eat at least once an hour, which is super annoying.

No!!! I've been having something similar the last 2 days in the front of my right shin. I read that it can be from heel striking, excessive downhill, overpronation, treadmill running (?) - I don't understand this one bc I thought they were from switching from soft to hard surfaces.

I think mine are from my 20 miler hill workout Sat on cement then trying out some stiff shoes. Have you been doing a lot of downhill running? Or are you trying new shoes?

When did you decide to take 2 weeks completely off of running last year? My pain is very minor and doesn't really hurt during a run. I'm hoping cutting hills for a while will help resolve things, but I've never have shin splints before.

From Lily on Fri, Mar 08, 2013 at 14:11:37 from 67.199.178.95

I hadn't really been hill running much, and when I got hurt last year I wasn't hill running. I think mine is from heel striking. I suck :(

From Lily on Fri, Mar 08, 2013 at 14:12:25 from 67.199.178.95

My pain last year started out as minor. This time too. I kept running and it got worse over time. Then I had to stop. But yours could very well go away.

From Jackie82 on Fri, Mar 08, 2013 at 14:16:09 from 18.189.42.191

Actually, I just had a gait analysis a couple weeks ago and was told I was heel striking and over striding too. That probably contributed, but I have been working on my form. For what it's worth, I was run with my torso completely vertical. The girl told me to lean forward slightly which would tilt your body so your feet land more underneath you helping you to mid strike. I don't know maybe that will help? It has taken away my hamstring pain for me. I hope you find a fix!!

From Neasts on Fri, Mar 08, 2013 at 14:17:26 from 75.169.62.136

Ice packs or ice massage, baby! and ASTYM or some kind of myofascial release if you like that kind of stuff, and compression socks during the day and at night. Take an occasional ibuprofen if it keeps you up at night. Put your feet up on a pillow and take a nap. Slip back into a tried-and-true pair of shoes for a while. Get on some soft surfaces to strengthen your connective tissue. See a PT for biomechanical advice. Above all, don't stress the healing; it'll happen with your best care. :-)

From Neasts on Fri, Mar 08, 2013 at 14:19:26 from 75.169.62.136

Jackie, that sounds like the way I tend to run, too, especially the more tired I get. I've found that with intermixing trails, I've been forced to take smaller steps and tilt forward a bit more just out of necessity (i.e., not fall on my arse).

From Christie on Fri, Mar 08, 2013 at 18:17:08 from 74.213.202.246

I know everyone is so different but a couple things I do... Compression socks almost every day, even under my work clothes. I honestly think swimming helps keep me injury - even when I was not doing triathlon, when I felt a 'niggle' coming on I would go swim and it always seemed to loosen things up. And, I ice almost every day for 10-15 minutes. Hope you get this cleared up girl.

From Toby on Fri, Mar 08, 2013 at 20:05:56 from 199.101.229.6

I've had major shin pain lately too. I've been foam rolling them and using my rolling pin. It hurts, put seems to be helping some.

Hey Russ! No I haven't. Thank you so much for the suggestion. I'm going to get orthotics for my shoes today, so I'll look for the calf sleeves. My shin splint is on the inside of my right shin tho. Will that make any difference?

From Russ on Thu, Mar 14, 2013 at 09:01:41 from 74.114.3.253

Sorry Lily, no expert here. I bought mine on a whim before my September marathon as after long runs my right outer calf would throb with numbing pain and the sales rep swore they'd help. I wore them on the marathon even though I'd never tested them out and they worked great. Really nice to wear around the house before the marathon (taper legs) and then after the marathon. Seemed to help recovery also. My guess is they'll help you, but orthotics should help as well. I know my right foot doesn't have good form due to an old ankle sprain, so I get more injuries. If that's similar to your situation orthotics should correct some of that? Good luck - I hope it all helps.

Race: St. George Spectrum 10k (6.2 Miles) 00:41:27
Total Distance
6.20

Surprise! I ran a race today. Updating from my phone. More details later.

*I haven't run in 9 days, but I registered for this in January and since my legs were feeling better, I came down any way. I decided to hold back a bit on the speed to not jolt my legs back into a bout of shin\calf issues. So I took it easy the first 2-3 miles. Then kicked it into gear the last 3 I t worked and I am not unhappy with the time. I know I could have knocked a good minute & 30 of this time, but again just went out careful.

So fun to see so so many familiar faces. And meet Christie. RAD and I got to rub elbows the first mile. She is so funny! Good day. Good weekend. I have been here visiting family since Thursday.

Total Distance

6 miles this morning. Ran from my house to the Sports Park (1.5 mile) and ran 3.5 miles on the soft grass. Then 2 more back home and around the hood.  The grass running is quite hard to do, but feels good on the joints. It's a little hard to explain. It's almost like running in sand. I tried not to look at pace at all today because 1) I was really slow, legs are sore from Saturday's race.  2) I was running on grass, which just slows you down period. Good run though. I think it was wise to hit the grass today.  Shin and calf from what I can tell didn't hurt at all today either. Good sign.

I really really hope and pray that I have no more shin and calf issues this year. It ruined any races for me last year. I want to race this year.

Surfaces really do make a difference. I don't even try to compare road vs. trail/grass paces, as they just don't compare. I do think varying surfaces is good for injury prevention, though. Here's to racing this year!

I kept spooking myself out on this run. Thinking I see someone when there is nobody there. Being back in the dark sucks! I did see something strange but funny. I guy ran past me smoking a cigarette. LOL

Don't worry about slow runs, that's where you build the base. Most of my running for St. George was done between 8:15 and 8:30 pace and I PR'd. I just didn't want to get injured and I was able to start injury free, that was the most important thing!!

How to do run while smoking? Ewww... I hate running alone, I creep myself out so I swear my HR is way above where it should be!

From Kira Bell on Tue, Mar 19, 2013 at 13:43:16 from 74.220.196.214

I agree with Carina. :) You build your base there

Haha! That is funny! A little counter productive...if you ask me, but whatever floats his boat right?

From Jackie82 on Tue, Mar 19, 2013 at 13:48:38 from 18.189.42.191

Keep it easy and let things heal up. It can definitely be an ego blow to have to stick to a slower pace. I agree with Carina about building your base. There's no need to strap on those racing pants yet!

From I Just Run on Tue, Mar 19, 2013 at 14:03:34 from 67.79.11.242

Maybe the guy was using the cigarette as his safety light..?

I've just started running some slow miles too, to add base. I think I feel worse after a slow run than a fast run but the next day I always feel great!

Hey, I have a free entry into the Riverton Half Marathon or 5K this weekend if you know of anyone who wants it. You have to sign up in person to use it and the deadline is the 22nd, I think.

From Lily on Tue, Mar 19, 2013 at 14:15:21 from 67.199.178.95

Hey Neasts, maybe I will take the 5k entry!

I just run, Jackie, an Kira. Thanks for the reminders to just not worry about my pace. I realize more and more today that my legs are still sore from racing Saturday. I am always slow after a race. Always. :)

From Neasts on Tue, Mar 19, 2013 at 15:14:25 from 75.169.58.228

Lily, it's yours. We'll have to figure out how to get it to you before Friday at the latest. There's probably time to mail it if you want to e-mail me, or I can meet you on your way up to register.

The 5K is a loop course with less than 100' of elevation change, so your leg might appreciate that. It doesn't look like there will be 20-30 MPH winds like there were last year. :-) If you do it, we'll raincheck the Saturday run.

From Neasts on Tue, Mar 19, 2013 at 16:42:07 from 75.169.58.228

Lily, updates on the Riverton thing. I e-mailed the director to make sure that it's not full, and he said:

"The race is not full yet. Those race coupons where good until the general registration deadline. That deadline was March 7th. For this year, we will accept the coupon for the price of the general registration but will need you to pay the difference which is $10."

Sorry, the entry has just been sitting in a drawer for a year and I didn't take it out to look carefully. Let me know if you're still interested.

From Lily on Tue, Mar 19, 2013 at 17:49:42 from 67.199.178.95

Dude! I am having the weirdest day. I ran 4 miles this morning and every single mile hurt! Calf hurts. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY GAIT or landing.... or whatever.

So I cut the run short. I came home and put on my new Saucony Mirage's. I haven't run in them yet.  Went to Gold's and worked on the elliptical for 42 more minutes. Good effort. A little strength training after. Went to Walmart (and you know that's entertaining). Back home yada yada yada.

After I put my groceries away I decided to do a short jaunt to test my new shoes. They felt good so I just wanted to see what they were like. Well I ran like half a mile and NO PAIN. What?!?!?!? I do not understand! Either the mirage is a REALLY awesome shoe, or a miracle has happened. Or maybe neither and it's a fluke. Well I went out again and I still feel no pain in my calf. But this morning the 4 miles was torture and I even ran some of that on grass. For the love of Pete!

Dangit, Lily!!! Where is the pain in your calf?

I was having calf pain for several months. It even hurt to walk a lot of the time. I have no idea what was wrong, but oddly, after I ran the Spectrum 10k last weekend, the pain is completely gone. I don't know how to explain it. I keep waiting for it to come back, but it hasn't. How's that for weird?

if there were a marathon on ellipticals you would win GOLD at the Olympics. serioulsy however do you take on that machine? day after day, and for a long time and at a sweat fest rate????? AMAZING. hey...remember I made it to Boston in a crybaby state too...it was sad to be injured but so glad I still ran it....just make sure to run with someone. The worst part of Boston for me was not the heat but the lack of company. Still sad about that. I lost Rachelle at the start and things went downhill from there. Luckily family stops along the way boosted my spirits. You can beat this. :D.

From Jake K on Thu, Mar 28, 2013 at 14:19:02 from 155.100.226.191

I think its highly impressive to get (and keep!) your HR that high. Seriously, when I do anything other than running, I can't get it above resting!

Back in the days when Paula Radcliffe was on top of the world, she used to supplement her running with additional high-intensity x-training on the elliptical. It allowed her to get in more max-HR level work without destroying her body. In the long term, her body ended up destroyed anyways, but she was also running 140mpw and through a lot of injuries.

From Neasts on Thu, Mar 28, 2013 at 14:43:01 from 71.213.43.229

Last year when I knew I was going to have to stop running for 6+ weeks for the stress fractures, I did a few workouts with the HR monitor, and it really helped me gauge what I was doing on the bike while I healing up. Because I kept my HR where it was when I was running (or more), I really didn't lose a whole lot, cardiovascularly. (That didn't qualify as a lecture, did it?)

From Rachelle on Fri, Mar 29, 2013 at 10:32:41 from 159.212.71.199

I think the elliptical is so much harder than running and I work up double the amount of sweat (and always lose too much weight) when I am stuck on that awful beast. Keep on keeping on Lily and try not to get discouraged. You are definitely maintaining your fitness.

Ran 3 miles then walked half a mile, then ran 2 more miles. I had to force myself to run slow. I have the fitness to still pick up some speed, but I'm smart enough to know I could end up hurt again. Soooo I will be holding back for a few weeks. But oh it feels good to run!!! Nothing beats it. I love it !

I cannot lie, I loved watching Boston coverage this morning but I am seriously heart broken I couldn't be there. I am really frustrated that I cant' seem to get through a training cycle anymore without getting hurt. Where before (2002-2010)  my body held up like a work horse. I could put a lot of stress on it and it would always bounce right back. Not so much anymore. I finally got my calf healed up and started running a week ago. Thursday I started hurting in my ribs really bad. I went to urgent care Saturday morning only to find out that the really bad cough I've had for 3 weeks has put a stress fracture on a side and a back rib. I also have some cartilage damage in the same areas. FROM A COUGH. But this hasn't been any old cough, it's been really bad. Not letting me sleep, coughing until my ribs felt like they would snap in half. So here I sit wondering when I will run again. I tried Friday but it hurt really bad. I stopped after 3 miles. My side and ribs had intense pain.

UNCLE!!! i've had enough!

Workout today: 1 hour 15 minutes on the elliptical. Doesn't really hurt so much. The jarring of running hurts my ribs. But this afternoon I am feeling better. Maybe I will see what it's like to run tomorrow. I'll be careful

From Toby on Mon, Apr 15, 2013 at 16:51:50 from 199.101.229.6

I know you've gotten tons of advice from the blog. So I'm not sure if you even want this unsolicited information (you're just too talented of a runner to not be running)!!!!

The PT I've been working with is amazing! He is a runner and does a ton of triathlons (200 races in 15 years). Obviously, something you're doing isn't right. It may be worth a trip to see him and he can study your gait - see weaknesses, imbalances, coming back too fast, etc.

When I went the first time, I brought my training log, my shoes so he could see how I wear them and a bucket list of questions.

I told him I couldn't come 3-4 times a week, but that I would do anything he said. He was respectful of that and gave me a big homework list to do on my own.

His name is Steve Orrock. He is in Orem by the mall.

I really wish you were tearing it up in the pavement. You are such a terrific athlete !!!!

It has Toby. I know running isnt everything about my life, but I could never deny its a huge part of me. I will run until I'm old and gray. I have a huge longing to be out on the road and racing. It's on my mind everyday. I feel like I'be shown a lot of patience in dealing with my injuries, I just want to run without fear anymore. I think I can get back to that. I just know it.

My iron is in the normal range now after the IV infusion. It just took a few weeks. I'm still trying to get it higher cause runners need more iron, but my insurance won't cover another ifusion because it's in the normal range :/ I feel 100x better though!

Hey Lily whats your iron level at?

From I Just Run on Wed, Apr 24, 2013 at 08:16:44 from 67.79.11.242

When I was a young boy I went through a time when I was always tired. My grandfather thought I had low iron so he made me start taking liquid Geritol. Recently I started taking it agin for the same reason. I'm not sure if it actually helps but what the heck...I'll try anything.:-) My wife laughts and says only old men take liquid Geritol. :-(

Angie its at 44 now. I guess they like it at least 90?

From Nan on Fri, Apr 26, 2013 at 10:33:14 from 98.245.117.176

I got an Iron IV at my Natropath's a few weeks ago and I am feeling WAY 100% better. My insurance didn't cover it but it was the best $300 I ever spent. My ferritin was 34 which isn't really that low according to some Docs but from personal experience I know I feel WAY better in the 90s.

From AngieB on Fri, Apr 26, 2013 at 18:47:38 from 65.130.84.190

Hey Nan I think I may go your route. I totally will pay $300 rt now to get my iron up and feel better. It's at 12 rt now it's been almost four months of me taking iron and its only gone up from 7 to 12 and I feel crappy. Do you know of any natropaths in Utah?

From Carina on Fri, Apr 26, 2013 at 18:51:49 from 204.15.86.83

Angie- I just did IV infusion through my family Dr. & with an anemia diagnosis a lot of insurances will cover it!

From AngieB on Fri, Apr 26, 2013 at 19:01:09 from 65.130.84.190

I am going to go to a different dr and get a different opinion the dr I've been seeing thinks I'm ok and shouldn't get a IV and its been frustrating cuz I feel so crappy and know its very low. Carina do you know the level at which it has to be for insurance to pay for it?

From Carina on Fri, Apr 26, 2013 at 19:05:35 from 204.15.86.83

Mine was at 12 and my dr gave me a diagnosis of anemia and my insurance covered it. I don't know if it is more about the number or the diagnosis, but either way I think you should be covered! Definitely go to a different dr. I didn't realize how crappy I was feeling till I started feeling better.

From AngieB on Fri, Apr 26, 2013 at 19:14:22 from 174.251.16.127

Ok awesome thanks for the info. I think I've got to find the right dr here. I feel that alot of drs just don't know much about how iron and running is so important. Ugh I'm on a high deductible plan and feel like I've totally wasted my time w that dr.

Not my best, but as usual with Run13, the course was over by .10 Sorry but even if the USTAF says its ok for them to mark it over, it bugs that they mark it over every time. The competitive part of me wants to swipe 20-30 seconds from this finish time. (same for you Allie!)  Forgot that I was running this today and did split squats weighted at the gym yesterday. Woke up with serious dead hips today. My husband dropped me while at a red light on University Ave. My eyes welled up with tears on the bumper to bumper drive down University, as I watched the half marathoners. Most heavy breathing and struggling. I haven't run a long distance race for almost 2 years and I watched them longingly. Saw Jen Hughes and Allie at the start, hucked my gum over the top of everyone to the bushes on the side of the road, it didn't make it. Some bawled man got it in the head oops :/

splits: 6:34 6:37 6:50.  I didn't have the fitness to hold the 3rd mile in the 6:30's but I expected that with all the time off since Middle March.

Fingers crossed for running well May-Sept. Pact with Satan?

Ran another mile with bandit daughter Maile in the kids race. She kicked butt. 7:30 mile. She got to the start about 12 seconds after the race start and passed 98% of the kids. Only my daughter... :)

3 more fast miles on the river trail at home. Son riding his bike next to me.

5 minute elliptical warm up, strength training for 30 minutes. Came home and ran a little over 7 on the river trail. Had to do a but of true off roading in the dirt... they are cutting down old or dead trees and there is some machinery and huge branches on the path. So darn near a true trail run in dirt and uneven surfaces. Wowza! Kept it easy the first 4 miles, dropped the pace by 40-seconds the last 3. Legs felt really good.

Since I run every other day now, I walked for 43 minutes on the river trail this morning. Then went to the gym and lifted heavy for 35 minutes. Then 36 minutes HIIT on an elliptical. I feel good not running everyday right now. I can see myself adopting this as a new fitness routine. It has made me realize that running everyday makes my body release more cortisol. It's in a more stressed state that way. I feel better overall now. Just my 2 cents. Maybe I will discontinue logging this running blog too. I wouldn't see the need. I am losing motivation and drive to want to run everyday.  :/

Comments
From Neasts on Wed, May 15, 2013 at 16:38:02 from 75.169.56.70

If I can throw in my 2 cents, one thing I've learned over my (many) years of running is that it's OK to not want to run. It'll always be there if/when the mojo for it returns, and then it'll be like a catching up with a long-lost friend. Life's too short, Lily, just enjoy it, running or not!

From Kam on Wed, May 15, 2013 at 17:15:08 from 68.66.163.179

Lily, you may be in an ebb flow right now, and that's fine/normal/acceptable. Fighting for something that isn't there (mojo) may also be a source of stress. I'm glad you are feeling better.

From DaleG on Wed, May 15, 2013 at 18:40:56 from 152.216.11.5

I hear ya, Lily, I hear ya. I log all my runs on my RunnersWorld account, but I blog for the social aspect. However, things have changed, people have moved on and I really don't get much social interaction anymore, like I did a couple of years ago.

From Rob Murphy on Wed, May 15, 2013 at 18:53:13 from 24.10.249.165

I am 48 years old and have been training and racing since 1977. I can tell you for a fact that it is impossible to pursue this sport with the same level of energy and enthusiasm year after year. I took most of my 30s off of serious training and returned with renewed energy when I turned 40. Don't force things too much.

It sounds like you're taking the right approach. Don't feel the need to apologize. That's the sure path to burn-out!

From Lily on Wed, May 15, 2013 at 19:06:21 from 67.199.178.95

Thank you Neasts, Kam and Dale.

Rob I especially appreciate your comment tonight. I have seriously lost my mojo. I love to run still, but then if I have any feelings of hurting or aching I lose confidence at the drop of a hat. It's really annoying. Mind games. I am frustrated. I haven't raced a marathon in nearly 2 years. I want to, I just want to do it without injury.

From AngieB on Thu, May 16, 2013 at 08:15:38 from 159.212.71.69

Hey Lily I hear ya. After a really crummy winter I decided to run by myself and not care about mileage. I took it fairly easy and now I finally feel like I am ready to return to the running world. Be on the DL for awhile and do what your body tells ya. It helped me.

Absolutely Lily! I think it would be a great benchmark run for you as you focus on training for Hobble Creek.

From Lily on Thu, May 16, 2013 at 09:35:37 from 67.199.178.95

You are right Rachelle. I can do it, I may not run it as fast I used to be able too. But I can try. It never hurts to try right? :) Are you running hobble this year?

From Kam on Thu, May 16, 2013 at 09:48:53 from 68.66.163.179

Yes! That's adequate training for a half. You won't run a 1:11 or 1:12, but I bet you'll run sub-7 pace. Just don't get mad at yourself for a bit of slowdown in the last couple miles if it happens. Stay with us, Lily, just scale back your expectations for running. You don't have to be among the best in the state to derive the physiological and psychological benefits from running. I tried to have a bit of a sabbatical over the winter, and my mental health went to he[[ in a handbasket. Keep it up, just at a less intense level.

From Lily on Thu, May 16, 2013 at 09:53:02 from 67.199.178.95

Thanks Kam. I've been so down the last week. I'm confused. I will never stop running. I can't. I've been doing it to long and its a huge part of me. I just want to push limits and race hard but with out hurting. It's hard!

From Kam on Thu, May 16, 2013 at 09:56:12 from 68.66.163.179

I know, Lil. Maybe you should focus your race efforts on 10k and shorter distances, so you don't have to run so many miles. I know you always want to go fast, but it's your kryptonite.

From Tara on Thu, May 16, 2013 at 10:00:38 from 75.169.137.170

I agree with the others, no doubt you can do it. I ran 3x week it for my last marathon training cycle and it worked out. Whatever balance you can find to heath and happiness is the key to success. Print that off as a cricut sticker and put that on your wall. Hahah :)

From Rachelle on Thu, May 16, 2013 at 10:04:16 from 97.91.88.52

I am not running hobble. I will be doing Park City that day. My friend Julia is graduation with her Phd and we have a huge girls weekend planned. :) Jen is running it though!

You could consider dropping to the 10K at UVM if you want to focus on racing hard. It is actually an AWESOME course!

From Carina on Thu, May 16, 2013 at 14:50:17 from 204.15.86.83

You totally can! I meant to comment yesterday, but never had time. Something that helped me a ton was running watchless for 6 weeks. It really helped me get back to the roots of my love for running without worrying about how fast I was going. I know I'm not the fastest out there, and I don't care. As long as I am enjoying it and it's helping me be a better person that's what matters. I also want you to know that you are a runner that I really look up to!!

From Jackie82 on Fri, May 17, 2013 at 09:00:56 from 18.189.56.67

You are running every other day, but yeah you are CRUSHING the crosstraining, my dear! I think you will do well with the half, probably better than you think!

From AngieB on Fri, May 17, 2013 at 10:34:56 from 65.130.67.220

Yes every other day is totally possible for a half. The first couple halts I ran i only ran every other day and I tell you what I ALWAYS felt fresh and good to go. I still don't run every day. It's really hard for me to pound out miles day after day. I think maybe a running partner will help. I've started running wed nights w a group of girls in my neighborhood and it's been so great. Even though they are way slower the recovery run is way nice. I do enjoy running alone too lately. I totally went through what your feeling just recently and still tried to keep in shape but gave myself a mental break so when I was ready to come back I wasn't starting from scratch.

12 miles! Haven't done this kind of mileage for months! Miles 3-6 were partial steep uphill then to incline going towards the Mouth of S.F. canyon. The views at mile 6 were incredible as I was near the massive windmills near the canyon. Amazing. Flipped around at 6 and came back down. Miles 6-9 felt good because it was decline then downhill. Mile 10 was fine. But 11-12 were hard. I just don't have the endurance. I could feel chaffing between my thighs, it was getting worse as I got to 12. I shed a few tears in the last mile. I had a mental war in my mind about whether I can run UVM half or if I will fizzle and die. I would be lying if I said I wasn't worried. oh my!

I find it wayyyyyyy harder to run long runs like this alone than racing. You will get in the race environment around people and feel way good! You will surprise yourself. Good thoughts from here on out k :)

I got on the bus with Allie this morning at 4 am I love her! We just click. Had a warm up run with her and Jen. Also with Kassie :)

It was truly heart breaking for me to let a handful of Women go out and pass me in the first 5 miles. Just as I was starting to let my confidence slide, I reminded myself that I was not there to prove anything. I was just here to run the half and finish without getting re injured. I think this is the first time I have neg split a race? Maybe I am wrong... I can't remember. Any way. That's what I did. From miles 10-13 I passed up 4 of the women.  I felt really good the whole time. I wasn't tired at any point. It was kind of amazing to see what it feels like to actually finish a longer distance feeling more strong. There was a girl on my heels that last mile. I could hear and sense her right on my shoulder, trying with all her might to get back passed me. Somehow I was able to hold her off.

After drinking water, eating a smoothie and walking around with my husband, I decided to run back up the course to find Rachelle. It was something I really wanted to do. I am so glad now that I did. It was kind of an emotional experience for me. I found her at 24.5 with her sister Amber who was riding a bike. Her Sister was talking to her. Reminding her of all the harder things she has done than run this marathon. Sorry, I guess I am emotional but tears started stinging my eyes as I remembered all the truly hard things I have gone through. They became the driving force for me 4 years ago to find more speed and endurance and fire in my running. They were what drove me to finally run a marathon. Those things call out our courage and our strength. I just tried to keep Rachelle's legs moving and reminding her to control her breathing. I had plenty of pep left in my legs to speed her up if needed. So awesome to see her cross the line at around a 2:59. Made my day! Congrats Rachelle!

And now it's onto building up more miles and endurance. I have lost some. I need to get it back.

Way to stick it out and finish it lily. I've been there too running racing not 100% and getting beat by people I know I can stay up w. Just train hard and get ready for the next. I ran that race years ago it was my 3rd half ever 3 weeks after Ogden half and I felt the same way every girl passed me in the first mile. It's like the Olympics at that race.

From Lily on Sat, Jun 08, 2013 at 13:15:20 from 67.199.178.95

From Rachelle on Tue, Jun 11, 2013 at 11:44:58 from 159.212.71.17

Great race for you Lily! You were only about 15 seconds per mile slower for the half than you were for your 5k just a month ago. That is some pretty great progress in a months time. Keep training smart and you will be killing it by the fall.

Thanks so much for running with me at the end. It meant a lot to me to be running in with you and Jen by my side - my absolute favorite moment of the race!

From Sasha Pachev on Fri, Jun 14, 2013 at 16:35:25 from 69.28.149.29

Good run. Even with the scaled down effort you still ran a decent pace. Now is not the time to prove things - just the time to train. And you got to experience this end of a sub-3:00 marathon which has some psychological significance for visualization - you can tell yourself as you train in the next 2 months that it will not be long before you will finish a marathon just like that.

From I Just Run on Mon, Jun 17, 2013 at 07:36:52 from 67.79.11.242

It's hard to come off of vacation and put in the miles and to regain any form of motivation (at least for me). Great job! We need to get in a run next week after I get my legs back, Carina, too. View Benchmark?

From Lily on Sat, Jul 06, 2013 at 11:42:03 from 67.199.178.95

From RAD on Sun, Jul 07, 2013 at 22:11:34 from 76.27.82.202

If you guys are willing to let a tag-along come, I would love to join you up VB! I've done it once with the boys club, but it would be great to try out the new trail they have so you don't have to do the bike trail!!

Nice job on the workout Lily! If you want to see lack of motivation come check out my last couple weeks....

From I Just Run on Mon, Jul 08, 2013 at 10:50:09 from 67.79.11.242

You guys have such great running support, that's got to help with the motivation. I don't even know another runner in my area. :-(

From Lily on Mon, Jul 08, 2013 at 10:53:54 from 67.199.178.95

That's a bummer @I just run! It helps so much when you've got your friends to meet up with ;)

From Lily on Mon, Jul 08, 2013 at 10:55:02 from 67.199.178.95

@RAD of course you should come. We just need to decide a morning. Neasts, is Wednesday or Thursday morning good?

From Neasts on Mon, Jul 08, 2013 at 14:01:16 from 71.32.225.219

Yay, RAD! Thurs or Fri would be the best days for me this week, and early, if possible. There is a water fountain halfway up and back so it's not necessary to pack water on VB, and with the new connector it's a total of about 9 miles.

@I Just Run, I ran alone for so many years, and all I gotta say is although it's convenient to run alone, it's much more fun with friends and like-minded people. Do any running stores in your area have organized group runs? That's a good place to start, if so.

I woke up to a text from Rachelle (from Sunday night) that said she was running Spanish Fork's speedy spaniard 10k course at 6:15ish. But I woke up at 6. So I threw on my stuff fast as I could, and ran from my house to a road that goes into the Spanish Fork river bottoms. Ran for about 2 miles until I came upon Rachelle and Amber Dunford. So fun! So I ran about 3 miles with them. We had a good time. Once to the finish line, I had to go, so it was about a mile more home. I forgot to start my watch once I had stopped it, so today's mileage is a guess.

I was supposed to meet Rachelle but I am so tired lately that I turn off my alarm in my sleep. I cannot wake up. I am staying up much later than I used too. I just can't wake the same without enough rest. Anyways, woke by 6:10 on my own. Got out and ran 8. My left heel has been hurting for quite some time. PF hurt. Today I noticed my right was hurting slightly too. Great. Other than that, kept a good clipping pace. Nothing tight and I was full of energy at least.

Went out for my run and got caught in the downpour at 1.5 miles in. I was so so so so soaked. I had on my brand new Brooks Ravennas. Anyone know if shoes get ruined from being that soaked? Its the first day I have worn them and they were soaked completely through. That was a crazy run. My headphones stopped working. I hope my ipod is ok!?

From Carina on Fri, Jul 12, 2013 at 11:18:42 from 204.15.86.83

The shoes will be fine, I've even put mine in the washing machine when they got really dirty! Put some newspaper in them and they will dry out really fast. Good job getting your run done. Oh, and put the ipod in rice!

From Lily on Fri, Jul 12, 2013 at 11:21:31 from 67.199.178.95

Carina- ha ha, I did put in in rice like an hour ago. :) I hope my shoes will be ok. They feel so good! I don't need ruined brand new 110$ shoes!

Jessica, it was kind of fun. But I decided to stop around the first loop at my house because I was worried about ruining my shoes! I should have put on some old ones and finished out there. Oh well.

From Cam on Fri, Jul 12, 2013 at 14:29:20 from 67.222.234.132

If I had a dollar for every soaked Ipod i've ruined. I would have 7 dollars. I got my new Nike Lunarknits all wet today too- but they are intentionally ugly so no loss really : )

From I Just Run on Fri, Jul 12, 2013 at 15:43:24 from 67.79.11.242

Your shoes will be fine. I wash my shoes regularly with no effect. They may feel a little tighter when you first put them on but after a few minutes they stretch right back out. As far as the I-pod, I bought a nano that was for underwater use. You can actually swim with it. Hopefully yours will be okay when it dries out. Put it under a lamp so it will pick up some heat and the water will evaporate out of it.

From rAtTLeTrAp on Fri, Jul 12, 2013 at 16:43:22 from 24.19.80.36

I think running in soaked shoes actually breaks them in nicely. Not so much for iPods. We run in the rain a lot here in WA :)

Calves were all balled up when I awoke. So I opted to run flat ground. I don't know what the deal is but I have no energy. Could be that I had low iron (that was checked by my Dr. in March) and I haven't been taking my iron pills at all for like 3 months. I am not sure what the deal is but I don't have the energy to train for TOU. I am seriously seriously thinking about dropping the idea. And just backing off on running. I don't feel well again.

Somehow managed 7 miles even though I honestly had to stop 3 times to due to low energy and light head. This isn't very fun

So.....this is really weird to write this. I have been thinking a lot the past few days. I am generally just burned out with running. I feel like crap most days. I go in and out of motivation. I feel really tired. I feel more physical and mental stress, the more I try to increase mileage. I must be getting old :)

To get right down to it, I've realized that for now, I have had enough. Enough of the daily grind of running and training. It isn't feeling fun anymore. So I am taking a break. Who knows for how long. I will do other forms of exercise. But I won't be running daily anymore for now. I need a reset.  Probably won't jump on the blog very often.. It's just that I need a break from it on all fronts.

Surprise track workout with Rachelle, Jen, Melissa, Mackenzie, Aubrey and Amber! Surprise for me totally. Rachelle is a sly devil, she knows what she's doing with me especially. If she would have told me last night, she knows I probably would have chickened out!

The plan was 6x800 with a 200m recovery jog. I didn't do all the 800's with them, I felt a pull in my left hammy after the 3rd set. (3:03 3:06 3:09) so I just pulled back to a 6:40 6:50 pace and held it there for the remainder of the workout. Still not to shabby for me. I haven't done anything by way of speed for months and months and it shows :( But my effort was there.

Fun morning with these ladies. We did a warm up and a cool down on a little 3/4 mile path next to the high school. Really cute little path.

Things were going great in this race for me until my left hamstring pulled and I was thrust into a painful walk/jog from miles 11-13. I am pretty down about this. I was on track for about a 1:27. A huge boost from my UVM half time in early June.  My splits tell the story of today:

6:21 6:30 6:42 6:30 6:40 6:45 7:04 6:50 7:00 7:00 (then hamstring pulled up at the top of a hill here) 8:50 8:00 9:24.

Why me? Why do I keep getting hurt? I pulled this hamstring a bit at the track on Tuesday. The track will forever be banned on my workout regime!  :(  But I had to finish. I had to keep going. I dedicated this race to my nephew Vaughn. He has been in primary childrens all week. He was vomiting non stop for over a week. Dehydrating and looking like death. He is only 7 weeks old. So in the end, he was the reason why I didn't DNF. So a walk jog it had to be. Mass pain!

I felt really good. I had planned on doing a 7 min pace through mile 11. And I had plenty left in the tank for a 6:50 for the last 2 remaining miles. That was the plan until the hammy pull.

I am finally looking at fast running blog. I can't run because of this hamstring pull, and so it's very hard to get on here and see what everyone is doing.

Thanks for the comments my running friends. I appreciate you all. I need to get out of this cycle of injury. I don't know how though. :(

Coming back cautiously. 6.5 miles today. minutes 30-45 speed on offs. My hamstring shows zero signs of a pull 4 weeks ago. So frustrated with my body this last year. I do therapy in my mirror like everyday, tellig myself that my body is fine and that I can get back to where I used to be a couple years ago. I will. I am determined. I get knocked down, but I always get back up...

Total Distance

8 miles on the river trail. I left at 6:40 am.  I know I say this all the time, but, it was so pretty out and best sunrise ever. I could feel wind and so I knew TOU runners would possibly have tailwind today. I felt a little glum yesterday that once again, I am missing a marathon due to bodily beat-up-ness. Ah well. I don't stop trying to get through a marathon training cycle. I will get back there.
