I'm still trying to figure out what happened.  This was just not my day.  I completely fell apart at mile 14 and pretty much gave up from there.

Miles 1-7 I felt great.  I was right on pace and hit mile 7 in 57:36.

I made a POP just after mile 10.  I lost about 1 1/2 minutes, but still felt great.

I hit the half way point at 1:51:06.  Perfect.  I thought I could for sure get the 3:45 I wanted.

Then a mile later I was done.  I have never wanted to quit so bad in my life.  I mentally just gave up.  I walked, I used the POP many many times and I just didn't care.

The only thing that kept me going was knowing that Michelle was maybe going to be waiting for me at mile 23 to run in with me.  I was so happy to see her I almost cried.  I can not thank her enough.   She is the best friend ever.

I'm guessing that my poor performance was a combination of few things.  Maybe I hadn't recovered from Boston.  Maybe I went out faster than I should have.   I did have an upset stomach for many miles.   And I do not like running by myself for so long.

This was my 10th marathon.  Someday I'll figure this out.

hey great job toughing it out. i agree on the "figuring it out" thing...yesterday was number 14 for me and it ended in complete disaster. i don't think it can be figured out, which is why we keep coming back for more. you still ran well. be proud of your finish! take some time off to recover and you will bounce back. you can definitely break 3:30 at STG. go for it!

From Cheryl on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 14:27:45 from 76.27.66.153

I second what Allie said. Marathons are strange beasts, we never know what is going to happen. 4:02 is a great time considering how you felt. I felt ok during my two Ogden marathons and finished slower than you did. So I think you did great.

From Bonnie on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 15:03:41 from 71.210.108.104

Just a bad race Julie, they happen ... just take a little time to recover and then keep your sights on the next one. I believe that you got some training stimulus from this race, so it was still a positive thing.

You showed a lot of toughness!!

From Michelle N. on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 17:42:59 from 75.162.247.50

You are so awesome and that time is great considering you did Boston 4 weeks ago. It was also HOT and we aren't used to that! Way to tough it out though. I am so glad I came up to run the last few with you. It was cool to be on the cheering side of running. You will pop back and run SG strong as ever.

From Kelli on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 20:03:55 from 71.219.69.233

I am sorry you had a tough race Julie. I think it was a very tough course, it mentally through me (and many others) for a loop. And I feel super bad that you had tummy troubles, that is the absolute pits during a race!

I do have to agree---you just ran a marathon 4 weeks ago! That is tough!! You are an awesome runner and so fast, it was just one of those days. And YEAH to Michelle for doing that for you, what a good friend indeed.

So, I am wondering if it ever gets to a point when you have a marathon figured out?? They are so hard.

Now, take a little time off before you jump back into it. come to my house every day and eat cookies instead!

How did your daughter do at BYU?

From MichelleL on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 23:32:20 from 71.219.40.17

Sorry it didn't turn out the way you hoped. It is so hard when you want to quit and have so far to go. You have to have been tougher and become even tougher by sticking with it.

What is POP? I heard Smooth mention it too.

Hey anyone who knows me knows I've seen more than my share of POPs, and that's when I'm lucky.

Julie,

Figure it out ... write a book ... and collect your millions!! :)

It just wasn't your day ... but still a very respectable time! :)

You know that I think you are amazing!!! (Plus ... how many people do you know that get to hang with Slaughter? :) :) :))

Hope you are having a GREAT day!!!

Way to hang in there ... glad Michelle was there for you. :)

From Walter on Mon, May 18, 2009 at 00:53:57 from 76.27.15.208

Julie, that is difficult to run Ogden so close to Boston. I did it last year and it was hell on me. Dont let it get you down, it was great weather and besides the nasty water everything seemed to go well. It was good to see you up there.

From RAD on Mon, May 18, 2009 at 01:47:41 from 67.166.99.8

Julie, I can't believe you weren't feeling well!! Maybe we should've stuck closer together, then we could've been in pain and misery together :) This is your 10th marathon? DANG!! I think I'm starting to figure out this marathon monster thing...its just that - A MONSTER!! And like Cheryl said, thats why we keep coming back. As horrible as it was you know we'll come back for more and try to conquer the beast, why? That I'm not sure of...but I am sure that you will!! You are such a strong and dedicated runner that I wouldn't expect anything else, and YEA for Michelle to run you in...I was SOOO hoping someone would've for me, but all the people I know that weren't running Ogden all think I run too fast for them, hmmm...they all should've seen me those last 16 miles :)

From jtshad on Mon, May 18, 2009 at 10:15:13 from 204.134.132.225

Way to tough it out and finish. I agree with the others, this was just a bad day. You can try to attribute it to lots of things all of which could have impacted your race (weather, Boston, water, etc.) but it is just another learning experience and a motivator to get the next one. Great mental toughness to persevere!

From Julie on Mon, May 18, 2009 at 10:54:40 from 71.32.224.25

I just love this blog. You guys are all so awesome and I feel so much better after reading your comments. It's so nice to have friends that share the same crazy addiction.

Kelli- Taylor's medley team didn't make it to the finals, but the Riverton girls track team took first in state so she was very happy.

From RivertonPaul on Mon, May 18, 2009 at 11:25:57 from 67.42.27.114

Sorry it wasn't your day. Chalk it up to experience and you will reap some rewards from the hard day of training.

From Nancy on Mon, May 18, 2009 at 16:58:29 from 76.27.11.127

Julie,

I'm sorry you had a bad race. Mine wasn't the best either. Your marathon time with a bad race was faster than any of the marthon's I've run. Way to hang in there!!

From Burt on Mon, May 18, 2009 at 17:22:44 from 68.76.197.194

Yep. Boston wasn't that long ago. I would still die for a time like that.

Allie - I can't believe you've run 14 marathons and you're only 22 years old. (Unless you lied on Athlinks)

From allie on Mon, May 18, 2009 at 17:47:40 from 75.169.208.150

technically, i have only run 13.660305

:)

From JulieC on Mon, May 18, 2009 at 17:57:34 from 65.103.255.113

Hey you ran two marathons in 4 weeks, a great feat!!! We missed being able to find each other because Melanie and I were busy pushing our way up the mountain!!! We are soooo stupid!! Anyway.. Hobble Creek we shall finally meet.

From peggy on Tue, May 19, 2009 at 11:14:57 from 71.213.16.115

I echo what everyone else has said. Sometimes we learn the most from the hardest experiences. We'll train hard this summer and be really ready for St. George, and then we'll face that "marathon monster" again!! Josse has a quote from Paula Radcliffe on her blog that I like. "You can't become a winner overnight, or even in a couple of years-it takes time.... You will lose races and you will have to accept that, learn from it and believe that you'll win the next one, knowing that you'll probably lose as well. All the time you have to keep believing that one day you will win." (I copied it) For us, winning is conquering ourselves and getting back out there again and again and again. . .

From peggy on Tue, May 19, 2009 at 11:15:22 from 71.213.16.115

P.S. - I think you're time is pretty dang good considering how you felt.
