TM workout: 3 miles w/ pickups to WU. 5k Fit test: Decent showing - 6:05 for mile 1, and cutdown to 12mph. 5k in 17:50. This is a massive improvement over where I was a month ago.
Went about 3 more miles for an even 10miles on the day

| Snow storm number 2 coming down today on the day off from work. Looks like about 2-3 inches on the ground around 2pm.
First run on the home TM that we bought nearly 1 year ago :) We have it set up in a room facing out the Western facing window, so it was nice to watch the snow fall from inside.
The shocks/springs on the running platform give it a flex/spring action, that really hurt the knees. Its a nice interface, and functional in a pinch, but, probably not too much more mileage on that thing. 8 miles with alternating speed and incline, 228 vertical feet recorded. 1:06:10

| AM: 3mi. race in Indy. Nathan came up the night before and we went and ran this race as a measuring stick for fitness level.
Cold morning, with a bit of rain and ice mix. We picked up our packets and "Warmed Up" jogging around the area for a couple of miles. Did some strides and lined up. Great to see some old familiar faces and catch up with Nathan.
Race performance was almost spot on expectation: Went out in 5:45 mile 1, and almost maintained for 2 (5:47) and 3 (5:53). A good look at adaptation achieved so far, though. Back in December, almost 2 months ago, a local 5k: 5:50 mile 1 translated in to over 6 min. for 2 and 3. Did have to go to the well to outkick a couple of folks in the last 0.25.

| 9AM - 5k Series Race - Pink Power 5k course is people trail by Lincoln Park in Columbus. Got there a little late and warmed up about 10 minutes. This course has a block on me - I always suck wind and run slowly in the last mile or so.
5:44, 5:48, 6:05, 0:51 splits for 18:30. Solo effort, for the win, but, another disappointing showing at this race.

| Carmel Marathon number 7 - a welcome change to the date this year - usually April 2X, this race was moved to The first Saturday closest to the begining of April. Training consisted of about 12 weeks of semi-structured lower volume blocks with several quality LR. I had a lower volume total mileage than what I know to put me in my top fitness, but, decent volume of quality training coming in to the race. More importantly, a realistic assessment of fitness level prior to toeing the line, and executing in the actual race, really paid off. In previous years, I had come to the start line in much better shape, but, with unrealistic goals (or geting sucked in to a group in the actual race too fast for fitness level).
It was a partially cloudy, and cool morning - about 35 degrees up to about 45 degrees. Good marathoning weather. I settled in to the massive pace group for 3:00 for about 8 miles and had to leave them behind. The fella pacing was very chatty, almost tolerable, but, the absolute cluster at the aid stations could not continue.
First half felt very relaxed, and even more so once split away from the group: 6:45, 48, 43, 44, 52, 47, 49, 49, 44, 51, 48, 53, 44 -- Through the half in 1:29:00
Second half was a loop and new part of the course for this race, but, was not much of a surprise. It was all on the Monon Trail, with a couple of ventures off in to some familiar looking parts of the old course. More of the same up through mile 16. A small group of us (about 4-5) have joined and 2 younger guys are breaking the wind for me. At 16, it feels like I am stepping on their heels and need to go ahead and start a gradual increase in pace. That prooved to be a couple miles too early. Mile 14-22: 6:44, 48, 39, 40, 42, 32, 36, 38, 38
And it is here that I feel my mistake and pay the price. The miles go by much slower mentally, and legs start to really lock up: 6:48, 7:03, 7:18, 7:40, and 7:31 pace for the partial. Literal limp over the finish line for 2:58:49.
Previous results at this race (probably largely weather dependant) were much less favorable even with a higher fitness level.

| Beautiful morning. Took in the last part of a nice sun rise at the start of the run from the house (to the race). Ran over to Lincoln park for the Series 8k starting at the new pedestrian bridge. 10k with a pickup, an ATM stop, and bathroom break in the middle.
8k Race: Tim Proctor and I race each other again, with an all too familiar result. 5:55, 6:01, for mile 1 and 2, and I start to struggle, and Tim drops me. 6:14, 6:07, 6:01 for the next 3 miles, so, I at least recover a little bit and get some of it back. 29:52.
The race is always fun and interesting - the course is an out and back, and the 8k starts 10 minutes before the 5k. So on the way back, there is the chance to catch some of the ~20 minute 5k runners.
Chatted with Tim, Perez, Tom, some of the other guys after for bit, got my free Smoothie, and jogged over to soccer fields for Jude's soccer game. 4.3 miles easy with a little bit of trail by the river.

| got a ggod night sleep and had the day off work for election day. Took kid to the alletgist, did some house hunting in Greenwood... and then came home. Sstarted a long run attempt from the house. Starting around noon, but wearing the hydration pack intending to go 4 hours / 30 miles. Hydr pack did not keep me from really bonking around 3 hours in to the run and walk/joggin it home. Poor first impression of LR fitness - really kept the pace easy, but, was def feeling the recent sickeness in the lungs throughout the run. hopefully, the sickness was the reason for the struggle... This really a bench mark for assessing if I should givethe 100 mi. attempt another go. awesome course - Grandview loop with Carr Hill/YCamp out and back. 24 miles - 3:38.

| 6:30 am Long Run: 70 degrees and clear skies starting from the house. Put on the hydration pack and loaded with clif bar, and tailwind rasberry flavor mixed with a full 1L of water. Took my favorite route: Out Carr Hill/Youth Camp hopping off road when possible (grassy strips/cleared areas). Took that out to Grand view and ran 2 loops on the road. Toyed with hopping on to the GV Woods Trail, but, don't think I'm quite ready for long and trail yet. A couple of bathroom break stops once at GV, but, pretty strong and consistent after that.
Slowly eating the Clif bar and hitting the Tailwind/water mix ever couple of miles (more frequently after 20 miles) worked great for keeping a pretty good balance between energy level and GI/stomach condition.
8.5 miles out to GV, 7.1 miles / loop (x2), and 8.5 miles back. 31.2 miles - 4:17:50, approx. 2k vert.

| Seymour Half Marathon:
Started morning with a jog over to Tim's house. Rode over to Seym. with Tim (car). Jogged around track for a WU in the nasty humidity - 2.7miles. Race start at 7:30a. Warm and humid/overcast, so no hope for moisture going away.
3 or 4 of us in the lead group dwindled to 2 of us by mile 3. Some heavy breathing going on behind me and an unknown younger fella by taht point. We were looking a about 6:10-6:15 pace, and both un-affected thus far. A long part of the race (first 6.5 miles) in Seymour and neighborhoods, a couple turns and then the out and back past the vineyard, with the "back" in to a slight headwind. By mile 8, I start breathing heavy at 6:10 pace. Struggling a lot within a half a mile, and the younger guy leaves me in his dust. Pretty decent time for specific training volume, weather, etc. A hard effort for 6:2x - 6:3x's at the end (last 5k):
6:12, 20, 12, 17, 11, 17, 07, 16, 17, 21, 23, 36, 31 - for a 1:22:36 and 2nd place.
drove Tim's car home, as he rode the bike back home, and then jogged back to the house from there - 2.7 miles more.

| AM Longish Run: Out and back into town via TerrLAke, and back Carr Hill, with no train. nice morning, and prepping for family vacation to Great Wolf Lodge for a coulpe of days. 15miles - 1:59
PM - We made the drive to the aquarium in Newport first. Kind of dissappointing for the price. Coolest part was crossing the ped bridge over the KY/OH State Line, and eating a decent meal at the Levee shopping area. Drove on to the hotel. What a cool place - Great Wolf Lodge is all about the kids. Indoor water park is really cool!

| "Out with the bad" run in the morning. Lots of food and bad "in" going out. started on hotel TM (sauna) and quickly switched to outdoors. found a near by track open to the public at a high school. All within view of King's Island amusement park. walked a bit more on the TM to waste time while kids sleeping.
7.2 total - about 80-90 minutes
Lots of walking, up hills pushing a stroller at the Cinci Zoo. actually turned on the watch for a couple of active stints and logged about 3 miles solid walking.

| AM - time to leave Gret Wolf and go back home. Woke up and out with the bad run number 2. went over to track and did some slow laps, and some harder stadium stair climbing. 4.3 mi. - 43 min.
PM - return home about 10a. Settle in, check some work stuff, and out the door. Drove over to Grand view for some trail work. made it around the gnarly, roots, and horribly marked 6 miles of trail in Grandview Woods in 1:15. Had all I could take, crushed a Huma Gel (first one of those in a while), and made the trip back around the lake to the car on the road in almost half the time. 11.6 total - 2:01:08

| Bluegrass 10k in Lexington. Drove down early morning and met up with "Good Times" race team mates. Nathan and family, Gordon, Nelson, and a whole bunch of other really great folks. Even saw Tiff's brother and family, and 2 guys from high school.
Race went okay - hung in there on 6:00 pace. 37:44 got me about 27th place I think. Pretty competative race with 31:xx winning it,m and top 15 under 36:xx.

| Flew in to Fresno, CA last night and met up with my Dad, and his friends and some family. We actually crashed at a friend of our cousins' house. They were kind enough to put us all up for a couple of days. The other group with my cousins and family members just finished up on their hike. 4-5 days in Yosemite.
Ran twice while hanging out and waiting for our Sunday morning start to our hike: 5.1 miles in the 100 degree heat and the hilly surrounding roads of Coarsgold, CA. 5.1mi. - 45:14. 690ft. of gain
2nd run in the evening: 4mi. 30:39 on the same hilly roads. Met the crew at the nearby Casino. No poker room - pretty dissappointed.

Got dropped off at Quartz Mountain trail head in Yosemite. Took about 2.5 hours to drive to the trail head up a mountain on a bumpy rutted barely pavement road. First time to the area for me, so, very cool new experience.
Me, Dad, and his friend Kevin starting a 6 day, 5 night backpacking trip through the Sierra Nevada Mountain range/Yosemite.
Day 1 start at about 9am left us with most of the day to hike to our first destination: Chain Lakes. 9.8 miles hike up to the destination of the day, and trail running/exploring at the lakes.

Hike and trail running/exploring as we journeyed on up to Lower Ottoway Lake today. Lots of vertical to gain and play on with plenty of beautiful scenery at every turn. Seized opportunities at breaks and stops (for my Dad and Kevin) to drop my 30 pound backpack and do some trail running. Brief 10 minute out and backs seemed to be ideal for exploring runs.

Out and back from Triple Peak Fork camp site preceding the hike. Flat and runnable trails: 5.4 miles - 47:52. Beautiful meadows and stream side trail with mountain views.
Hike to Washburn Lake and then eventually the High Sierra Camp at Merced Lake (running water and bathrooms!) from Triple Peak Fork. about 12 miles of hiking total.
Ran an out and back at lunch time. from Washburn Lake to the Merced Camp: 5.85mi. - 55:22. 7500ft. down to 7200ft. back up to 75

What a great day. Best day ofthe trip and probably in my running life:
5:30a run from Merced High Sierra Camp Up and Up / Out and Back: 5.3mi. - 48:37. 900 ft. of Elev. gain (and loss) in 2miles.
Back to camp and started the hike with Dad and Kevin. Hiking on my own for most of the day other than playing leap frog with a another group of hikers and a dad and his son. Found decent up hill hiking rhythm for most of the morning, and cooled off with a bath in a creek around 10a. Second real good "wash" of the week. End destination at Emerick Lake required about 6 miles of hiking and 2k of climb. Another beautiful mountain lake camp site. I arrived around 12p and had a couple hours before Dad and Kevin made it. Spent the time chilling in a shady spot and found a great camp site right on the water a couple feet away. We set up camp and chatted and then had to really step on the gas to get the rain flies on the tents and throw the gear inside as an awesome thunderstorm with rain rolled in. First mountain storm for me was awesome - lightning, thunder and heavy rain at 9400 ft. I was plenty dry and safe in a cover of trees and inside my tent. Stayed bone dry and took a nap through the last hour of the storm (best nap ever!)
Storm blew over, and the sun came back out around 4:30. Grabbed a bite and left out on a run. Took a route that climbed from 9400 up to 10,200 at the Vogelsang High Sierra Camp. The High Sierra Camps are literally a village of hotel room size tents and dining rooms, bathrooms, and lots of amenities. By reservation for high paying customers only. What an awesome run. Out and back trip to climb, run through the camp, check out another Lake near by, and then descend back to lower camp at our lake. 9.7 miles in about 90 minutes, obviously slower on the climb.

| Yosemite Hike Day 6
Emerick Lake to the Tuolomne Meadows Visitor Center. LAst day of the journey for me today. Hiked up and over Tuolomne Pass and descended in to the junction point. At this particular junction of the trail, a left took you to the TMeadows Vis. Cntr, and a right took you on to the JMT. What another awesome experience - talking to hikers coming off of and leaving to go onto the JMT! Promised dad I would wait for him at this junction, so I had a couple of hours to kill. Dropped pack and did some hill repeats up and down the last descent to the juction point.
After Kevin reached the junction, he went on to the visitor center. About 90 minutes later, Dad caught up, and it started to rain... stuff got wet for first time all week. we hiked in to the Finish line. Car parked at the parking lot and Kevin was sitting in there waiting for us. Lots of great pictures taken by Kevin and my Dad, but, I took no camera.
Great hike and trip concluded. We crushed icecream, and double burgers at the grill, cleaned up a little bit, and then hopped in the car for a 5 hour drive back to Fresno out of the park. Unfortunately, a wildfire covered most ofthe Western part of the park in smoke and I did not get to see most of popular sites, such as ElCap, Half Dome, etc. Other than the mosquitos and the wildfire, I couldn't have asked for a much better trip.

| A full day of travel. 4:30a drop off from my dad at the Fresno airport for a 6am flight taht got delayed. Stop in Pheonix for an hour, and then 3.5 hours to Indy, where landing was delayed by weather. Pretty scary landing as the pilot had to re-ascend from his origianl approach. The big passenger plane got tossed around a couple times by the wind and we circled Indy for about 30 minutes before landing at 5p. Hoofed it for the parked car. literally walked 1.5 to get to the car from the plane.

| Hot Hot Hundred 100k race in Wallingford, KY. Inaugral year for solo 100k in KY on trail - close to Morehead, KY. Drove about 3 hours the night before, and camped in the car seat. Pretty comfortable with the seat leaned back.
Met up with Nathan and the Bourne to Run, aka Good Times Running guys close to the starting/finish line in their camper before race start. Fun times, good company, ready to run!
Everybody started together: 10k, 100k Relay, and 100k Solo. Tough to tell what was going on for a while. The field of a bout 100 spread out quickly after climb number 1 of 3 of the 10k loop. Lap number 1 was a breeze effort wise, but, in retrospect should have been much slower. Washing machine style (alternaing directions around the 10k loop) splits:
10k - 1:07:37 (CCW)
20k - 1:11:58 (CW) 2:20
30k - 1:18:41 (CCW) 3:42
40k - 1:25:38 (CW) 5:11
50k - 1:47:00 (CCW) 7:00
Got really hot and strongly considered dropping. Side stitch in each side coming in to aid station
60k - 1:38:29 (CW) 8:42
Bounced back a bit
70k - 1:49:48 (CCW) 10:24:51
Think there was some stadning around time included on this lap. Moving time total was 10:20:05 for a total of 45.61 miles and 8k of vertical up+down, so we're clocking about 2 miles longer after 7 laps, and about 30 minutes behind the cutoff (16 hours).
Sat my tired ass down in the aid station and thoght about quitting. As I started to get up and consider going back out on the course (from the nice dry and well stocked barn aid station), a strong storm blew through. That was enough for me to call it. DNF. Drank a couple beers with Nathan and crew and enjoyed chilling with them for while.

Fitness is... not good? IDK whats going on. Been doing a decent amount of training at this point. Nothing specific, but, certainly enough to expect better than this result. Lots of hard effort to maintain 7 minute pace over the last 10k or so. 1:27:3x for 4th place
Anyway, it was great to see the KY crew, and finally see Nathan's beautiful new home on the lake! Got to hang a little bit with him and his family at post race awards.

| 9a Series Race at Becks Mill in Salem, IN. Neat historic site of old mill and the surrounding residencies from that time period.
RAn well on the hilly 5k course: GAP: 5:45, 5:51, 5:52 and then the finish is a massive downhill. PAce was 4:15, with GAP 4:42. Feeling alot better about this one than last weekend. Also - great to have the family in attendance.

| MAde the 3 hour drive Sunday morning and got to park in a pretty good spot, and with enough time to jog a bit before and pick up packet. Wanted at least 30 miles today, and hoping for sub 3hours.
warmed up with slow jogging before the race - about 3 miles. Good weather, and a lot of people to contend with to get to bathrooms and corral. Awesome race experience at the start line with a Thunderstruck montage, and fireworks. Dude messed up the national anthem lyrics... :)
Anyway, race went just fine through 17-18 miles. Clicking off 6:40-6:55 miles, with GPS way off from about mile 4. The 3 hour pace group was crazy big and made it tough to get water at aid stations, but, I think I managed to hit when I needed. Mile 19 split had a pretty good hill, and a slower split for me where I los the group a little bit. A well placed Clif gel at taht point really gave me a boost. and I started feeling good in some downhill miles: 21-23 miles were 6:19, 6:26, and 6:35. Even passed the pace group and was targetting other people to pick off, my previous favorit game to play when I was oyounger man :) Then, started fading again: 7:11, and then a dizzy feeling turning in to a severe dizzy spell. HAd to walk mile 26... Not good. I bounced back a little bit and ran hard over the finish line. GPS showed 27 miles. Crushed some food and warmed back up in the car. took a a few minutes to recover and regain my senses. 27 miles - 3:09:51

| Game time decision to hop in to the Indy Moumental Marathon. Literally decided 90 minutes before the race... :) Turned out pretty well: logistically, I hopped in the car an hour before the race, hit zero traffic, parked in the state garage 1 block for the start finish areas, and ran the race pretty well:
Started off with the 3 hour pace group, suffered through some crowded aid stations, and pulled away around 7 or 8 miles (After the split off of the half marathon).
Splits: 6:45, 42, 25, 34, 46, 47, 43, 48, 48, 45, 43, 37, 33, (1:28:40 for First Half)
6:43, 37, 43, 50, 37, 39, 30, 27, 29, 41, 46, 34, 6:09, 0.52 miles at 5:38 pace.
Water and gatorades were pretty regular intake, and ate 1 Coffee Clif Shot at mile 17, and half of another one at 22 miles. That seemed to be the Goldilocks on the nutrition meter. It seems like the nutrition thing changes every year for me, so it was good to hit this one within the right target zone.
Felt strong all day, and not too tore up afterward. Spring board in to Tunnel Hill 100 miles in 1 week, now.

| Day off work, and 4 hour drive to Vienna, IL for TH 100. arrvied around 4p CST, and met up wth Dad and Amy at campsite. They were already set up. I also set up my tent and it is super cold and miserable outdoors. We go to hear Camille Herron brag about herself in a presentation about her career and the WR TH100 she ran in 2017. Ate a whole lot of food. Zoodles, bananas, etc. Good to see several folks I knew, but didn't expect to see. hanging out with Dad and Amy.

| Race report: 2018 Tunnel Hill 100 drop down to 50M.
Spent a very cold spleepless night in the tent at the Vienna campground. Race start at 7a couldn't come soon enough.
Lots of prerace bathroon stops. Noticeably still feelin the right hammy tightness. Really bundled up in the 25 degree weather. Carrying one handheld 12oz. which turns out to be plenty, and plenty of gels and snacks stuffed in pockets. Went out at very comfortable pace with a big crowd. 8:45-9:30 pace is the plan and seems to be the right pace. Kept it really light and chatty for almost entire first out and back 26.4 miles. Catch Dad and Amy going the other way at about 5 miles left and snap a picture.
Feeling good rolling into the Vienna home base with about 5 gals following close behind me. grab some food and re-fill the handheld. Noticeably, the enitre group of girls is in and out of the aid station much quicker.
Set back out after the stop and notice the tightness starting to show up when stopping and starting back up. make it out through about 30 miles and really hit a rough patch. slam a caffeine gel and walk a bit. get it going a little bit from 32-35, and then hit another patch. Oh boy... proceed to wlak jog for next 15 miles to get out to Tunnel and the turn around, and then sinmialr all the way back for agonizing 3 more hours. Difficult to force a running motion as I come in to the Vienna home base again. Give it a couple of minutes, and watch Zack Bitter come through the 76 mile going the other way, and call it a day. Tunnel Hill is nice and gives buckles for drop downs from the 100 who finish at least 50 miles. 50 miles - 8:39 moving time.
Last attempt at 100miles. Done and made peace with not completing 100 miles.

| Long Run this morning in the returned cold weather.
10x (3min. On / 2min. Off) fit within the last hour. The "On" was only about 7 min. pace at best, but, was definitely flirting with TH effort. Almost got my 100 mile week in the books (Mon. - Sun.)

Boy, that winter weight is slow to come off - I mean, it has been almost a whole week.

7PM - easy 7.4 miles to finish out the 100 mile week. 1:05. Cold and Dark. Had to stop at 3 miles to really motivate myself to get that last 4mi. Ate chips and a lara bar, with some sweat tea.
