Happy New Year, everybody!  Today's my birthday, also.  Normally, I would be fairly hungover right now, but the family (Tiff and Jude) are sick so we didn't make it to the planned festivities down in Lexington.  Didn't even see the ball drop last night - asleep by 10:30.

Today was supposed to be a decent 10-12 miler before the snow, but called it off after a very painful 1 mile.

Oh well, its my birthday :)

Off running again - yesterday was kind of a wake up call - I'm still having some pain in my left hip just walking around.  Did get the new bike trainer set up with a little computer so I put in some miles on that.

12 miles on bike trainer in 37:41 w/ some pickups.  Also did about 15 minutes of leg and core strength stuff.  This was nice - the weather outside is getting frightful.

Its 30 degrees right now, but its supposed to snow about 8 inches tonight and drop in to the negative degrees over the next couple days.  My left leg is still pretty sore/weak.

1pm treadmill run at home.  Its raining, but only because its barely above freezing outside.  Colder (much colder) temps are on the way.  I've been kind of battling what seems like the beginning of what my wife and kid have... hope I don't get it!

12 miles starting off pretty slow (under 7mph). plodded along for an hour around 7.5 to 8 mph and tried to bump it up for an AT effort for about 20 minutes.  On my TM 9 mph was feeling labored today :(  I made it 10 minutes / 1.5 miles.  It took me 1:36:30 for 12 miles and I was drenched in sweat.

AM treadmill run - yep, its -7 degrees here in Indiana, with a windchill factor of -33 degrees!  Its so cold, the govenor called off work for all non-essential government employees. :)

10 miles easy - 80:00  Varied the speed between 7mph and 8mph.  Played an enjoyable Playstation game while running to break up the boredom

PM treadmill run:  -9 degrees w/ -33 deg. windchill  -- yeah, it got colder throughout the day... :)

10 am trail marathon in Yellowood State Forest near Nashville, IN - Tecumseh Marathon.  Temps were in the 40s to start and dropped to 30s by the end - go figure :)  The recent snow melt and rain made for the muddiest, most treachurous race I have run.  If it wasn't icy, it was muddy or  shin deep water.  The course was changed due to the usual course being in even worse shape - their solution was a 4 mile run out to a loop that was repeated 3 time and then back to start line to finish.  Pace and effort level was all over the place and the last 4 miles were a death march for my legs.  Unfortunately, that last four miles included the shin deep ice water that actually had chunks of ice floating from everybody breaking through on the way out.  A nasty climb bagan each loop and by the second time around the mud was ankle deep.  Completing and attempting ot compete in this race was the biggest effort, both mentally and physically, that I ever experienced in running.  On the second loop, where there is a steep decline with some huge mounds of muddy muddiness, I stuck a foot in that mud and took a huge fall and even rolled a couple times.  The left hamstring cramped up while it was folded under my body, and I though I was done.  Fortunately, I stood up brushed off, cussed alot, and the hammy loosened up when I restraightened.  No permenant injuries fortunately.

On a side note, between this race and the Huff 50k a week and a half ago, I have learned the exquisite art of peeing on the run (first step is making sure your all alone) ! :)

Check out this crazy splits:

7:19, 10:20, 9:57 , 9:57, 8:13, 7:31, 8:49, 9:01, 8:01, 9:22, 7:42, 7:25, 8:42, 8:46, 7:52, 9:57, 7:54, 8:01, 9:39, 10:20, 8:05, 11:14, 12:14, 9:14, 9:50

24.19 mi. GPS - 3:36:59 on the watch - my official time was 3:37:18.  Talk about losing the signal !

I feel pretty good about the effort now that it is complete.  A 2:25 marathoner won it in 3:13:xx

AM trail race in Brown County State Park.  Snowy and cold!  Started off leading for 0.5 miles - and I don't know why.  The pace felt manageable.  Turns out it was, but, 7 dudes behind me felt that it was too easy after about mile 1.

I felt like trash after about 3 miles and can really feel the bad way I've been eating and not training lately.

GPSed a distance of 4.8x... the race course is supposedly 5.22 miles.  I'll go with that - I ran 6:50/mile and felt like puking.

PM: mod. 7 miles - 53:15.  Pushed it a little harder this evening than this morning.  Feeling good to get this first official week of Boston training rolling with some quality volume.  It was actually 40 degrees this evening.  Its supposed to get cold again tomorrow, though.

PM: treadmill at the gym.  Its 11 degrees and very windy/icy.  I'm actually going to pay for a month membership... :(

At least they have cable - I watched some of IU vs. Michigan St.

Workout is a MPish type workout - 104% x MP for intervals:

TM @ 1%: WU, 2mi. - 12:36(9.5mph), rec. jog @8.5mph, 1mi. - 6:20 (9.45mph), rec. jog 0.5 mi., 1mi. - 6:22 (9.4mph), rec., 0.5mi.-3:05 (9.7mph) , CD

Something wierd was happening in my right knee during second interval - felt... not good, my leg started "collapsing" and felt like it was not going to support my weight while running ! :(  I backed it off, recovered, and fortunately it did not reoccur at the same pace during 3rd interval.  What the hell?!?

That was me, Joe. I was going to finally introduce myself but felt awkward.

I had nothing left when you kicked. Probably had another gear but I was in "Oh, hey, this went better than I thought" mode. Not that I could have caught you. You're much faster in short distance races and the marathon . . . but I am hoping to reclaim my title as "The fastest active FRB blogger marathon time" :)

It's a nice yet weird little series. It's true that you never know who will show up, but this race especially it seems to be the case.

Well done today.

AM: easy 7 miles on the treadmill at the gym - 58:35.  The heater broken in the gym, so it was about 45 degrees.  Still, much warmer than outside!  It was below zero outside this morning.  Another winter storm coming in with the cold weather - the 10k in Seymour tomorrow morning was postphoned.

PM: slow/easy 4mi. on TM at home - 36:06.

Decided to reactivate a bunch of the older shoes that are still sitting out in the garage.  Gonna see if a can squeeze some more miles out of some of them.  Those Gylcerin 10s are over 600 miles, but still feel fine.

PM treadmill at the gym: 10mi. easy - 1:20:00.  Its cold and icy around here still.  Been a tough winter for the Midwest (and everywhere else it looks like, too).  With all the planned mileage coming up and an overabundance of treadmill running, I decided to bust out the plethera of old Brooks trainer-type shoes sitting out in the garage and save some of the newer shoes for the warmer road running days to come.

Needed the am off to recover freom yesterday.  Pretty sore up through about lunch time today.

PM Treadmill at the gym: WU 1.5mi. w/ strides, 8x1mi. LT - 10.1mph (5:56/mi.) with 0.25 mile slow jog recovery.  I had some serious GI problems after about rep 5 - my apologies to the guy on the TM next to me.  I finished the workout just in time.

Pretty pleased w/ completing this - 8 mile repeats is a PR on the number of reps.  The last couple got alittle labored for the last half mile of each, but I think that was due to the GI thing.  This pace felt like it could be manageable for 10mi.-half, which is what I think the idea was.  This is the first workout of a very structured specific marathon training plan - my first!  I'm excited about having a sudo-coach/trainer! :)

Looks like coach cal will have to wait until next year for his chance to lead a team to 40-0. That's ok though, my Boilers don't even have a chance to dance this year.

From joebell1981 on Fri, Feb 28, 2014 at 07:16:07 from 99.39.133.24

Haha - yeah - they are underachieving even by my standards this year. Everybody knew the 40-0 thing was ridiculous! :) I really thought they would lose about 5 or 6 games about 2 months ago. Now, its looking like a 10 loss season with an early exit from both tourneys. But, hey, at least were not IU fans! :)

How you feeling about 3:10 this Spring?!

(I like your chances!)

Good luck with the races today (Saturday) and Sunday. I feel pretty good about a sub 3:10 this spring. Maybe not the Virginia Beach race. I'm going to try to bump my mileage up this month and target Carmel. The weather for tomorrows race does not look good.

AM 5k run across town.  Course is a slow course every year - lots of sharp turns, a couple sneaky hilly sections and a 180 turn around.  WU by running most of the course (and almost missed the start - my strides at the end got me to the start line at the middle Natl Anthem!) Pace was very even, but the effort level was much different throughout.  Also, there are usually about 7 or 8 faster guys (and girls) that show up for this race.  Also, a faster Quaff Team member made this race the third of 3x5k race.  Even with that, he still was only about 10 seconds back.  Lead from start to finish.  The last mile and finish is a difficult little upgrade:

5:42, 5:45, 5:46, 0:49 for 0.14mi. - 18:02 for 5k

CD running most of the course again.

PM - treadmill long run.  This cursed 10k that was supposed to happen on Feb. 8th and was already postponed for today because of weather, had to be cancelled due to weather - there is about a quarter inch sheet of ice on everything from last night and 3-5 inches of snow is supposed to be coming on this evening.  The workout was going to be an integrated long run with that race somewhere in the beginning to middle of the run.  That turned into a 2 hour TM run at the house :(

Set it on 7.8 mph and increased up to 8mph for 8miles, and into the 10x3:00MP (minus5-10sec) w/ 2:00 jog.  Did first 5 at the goal pace - 9.5mph, and cut back to 9.3mph for last 5 to finish the workout within appropriate effort level.  Just started having to labor by number 6.  Probably from racing/workout yesterday, but the idea was to get this run in today to allow 2 days recovery before this last hard week of the first cycle.  16mi. total - 1:59:19

PM: Hill workout on a nearby hill.  Carr Hill Rd. is 0.8 mi up a 2% avg. grade.  It rolls a little bit and flattens in a couple spots, but makes up for that with some steeper sections near the top.  This was na adaptation of a Boston Mar. specific Hill workout intended for TM I think (2mi. 2-4% up, rec., 4mi. with 0.5mi.up/0.5mi.down continuous, rec. jog, and then 2mi. 2-4% downhill to finish)

PM: 19.3 Long Run on Purdue's Campus about mid day - 60 degrees, sunny and windy.  There was a ton of people on campus out and running on the awesome series of paved trails that go all over West Lafayette it seems like.  I started in to the workout not really knowing where I would run 20ish miles (guess I shoulda go ahold of Jason Dodge! :)  )  Workout was 3-4x4mi. @ MP.  I had originally intended for this workout to be on Wednesday, allowing 2 days recovery after the double on Sunday, but took a look at the forecast and decided differently.  Ended up with about a 2 mile WU and got in to 3x4mi. MP w/ 5-10min rec. jogs.

First rep I still didn't know where I was going and wound up on some muddy trail by the middle of mile 2 and had to turn around - 6:34, 7:03, 6:33, 6:37, jogged a half mile, and then rep 2 was much better - 6:26, 6:24, 6:27, 6:36.  Jog a mile at about 8min. pace and then the last rep felt good and under control until that last couple miles in to the headwind - 6:17, 6:16, 6:24, 6:37.  Pretty dead after that, and jogged back to the Union.

AM: 10 mile race in Louisville, KY this morning.  Its a fun one, and well organized.  Its one of the bigger races I run in throughout the year - about 7000 people.  Set my daggone alarm clock for the work (weekday) setting and did not wake up until 6:15 - about the time I wanted to leave to pick up Nathan this morning.  Again - my apologies, Nate.

We barely got there in time for Nathan to register, and us to get to the start line in time.  The weather was great, with the exception of the headwind coming back.  The race for me, was an hour long battle with my quads.  From mile 1, a tightness crept in to both quads that never quit the entire race.   First 2 miles, the splits were about where I wanted to be, but the quad issue troubled me, since I knew that the difficult climbing of Iroquois Park loomed ahead for miles 2.5 through about mile 6.  Coming back, the wind picked a bit, I think and we had a good headwind to slow us down for the miles 7-9.  The course then turned out of the wind for the last mile.  The splits reflect as much.

6:00, 5:56, 6:12, 6:15, 6:17, 6:14, 5:51 (coming down out of Iroquois), 6:09, 6:09, 6:00, and then 0:14 for the additional 0.05.  I managed a good kick at the end to hold off a herd of guys (and gal) that had traded places with me throughout the race.

2 minute course PR, and a good indicator of about what I should expect my half marathon pace to be (on a flat course) - 1:01:16 for 40th Place

Good work on toasted legs, Joe. You should be able to run at least this pace or maybe even faster in a few weeks. Work those legs out.

After some merrymaking with old friends in Indy on Thursday night we continued on to a bar that had Quaff On Yellow Dwarf. First time I've had it. Good stuff.

Hoosier Half Marathon this morning in Bloomington.  upper 30s and overcast with a slight chilly wind.  Quaff race with a big group in attendnce today.  Our Half group stuck together for the first half of the race and started breaking up throughout the rest of it.  We also 2 of our top guys run the 5k and go 1-2 in 14:59, and 15:2x.  Our group was a little slower :).  We started with hanging back a little bit in the begninng, but it wound up being slow up hill and even it out on the downhill.  Target was around 6:10 average, but was all over the palce.  This was the hilliest half marathon I have ever run, by far.

6:21, 08, 19, 17, 5:55, 08, 02, 03, 18, 30, 24, 29, 29, and 26 seconds for the last ? I have a GPSed distance of 13.07...

My Spring Marathon curse continues.  I kind of got lucky and got an actual race bib (for Free) from someone who had to back out of the half marathon at the last minute - thank you facebook and all the random run clubs' groups on there, and especially the person who gave it to me!!  So I was Samantha Steele and I was wearing a half marathon bib.  I only got yelled out 3 or 4 times by race volunteers at the half/full splits... :)  I'm just glad the bomb squad didn't tackle me at some point!

Caught up with Tim Proctor and a couple random strangers prior to getting in the corral.  Tim was going for sub -1:18 in the half!  I warmed up a bit by jog-weaving in and out of the crowd in the corral about 15 minutes before the start.  I made a conscious effort to go out at a pace that felt comfortable, whatever that might be.  Fortunately, it was about 6:30's.  This course is pretty neat - it goes through (around the infield) of Churchill downs, and through mostly nice shaded neighborhoods in downtown Louisville.  I found a group of guys to latch on to at about 6:30's, but had to leave them when we started hitting a couple of 6:38-40's.  Which was wierd, because they came back later on at sub 6:30 in a hilly portion of the course.  Yes - the dreaded Iroquois park is a part of this course.  Fortunately, it was in reverse of the difficult lap direction.  So, you climb from 8.5 to 10.4, and then a huge climb from 11.5 to 12.25, and then rolling hills (mostly down) through the next 3.25 miles.  Unfortunately the second place female was right in front of me a decent size group of guys.  She happened to be wearing a tutu!!  Well, this really threw me, and several other guys off apparently and we decided that we were'nt going to get left in the dust by a girl in a tutu !! :)

6:29, 28, 31, 38, 31, 28, 34, 13, 23, 31, 26, 53, 36, 43, 31, 25, 39, 54, Girl in tut has crushed my spirits !!

I realized at this point that I was in trouble.  I had put too much effort in through these hills trying to keep up with the group and tutu.  I try force down a horrible chocolate Clif Gel or two.  I won't use these again - even with water, they are very hard to get down.  The strawberry and mocha caffeine clif gels were awesome however, and really went down easily and propelled me on to fight through later in the race.

It got ugly after that, but I was really giving a good fighting effort:  7:02, 7:23, 7:31, 7:35, 7:31, 7:04, 7:19, 7:13, and 2:27 for the final 0.35 miles.  2:58:56 for 26.35 miles

Take aways: Struggled in the second half. 1:25:40 first half, 1:33:16 for second half -- Apparently, still learning about what works for me nutritionally, and where my current fitness level is (compared to where I want it to be, or where it was when I PRed).

Good luck to everybody in Boston tomorrow - I am jealous!!

It wound up being about 4.5miles in 40 minutes.  It was mostly slow jogging, and was what I should've been doing the whole time.  Post workout beer at Joe Willy's with the guys was fun.  One Busted Knuckle in record time and on home.

Half marathon in Seymour, IN - great weather and flat course.  This is a smaller race, and coincides with the big one in Indy, so I'm usually running near the front.  Its a nice course with lots of turns through the town of Seymour and a brief out and back past the local vineyard.

Similar story this year - from the start of the race, I could tell I'd be solo in third all race.  I ran close to what my PR was from last fall, but started to struggle after 10 miles.  The course was short by about 0.1 by my GPS:

6:02, 17, 06, 08, 11, 08, 12, 18, 20, 12, 15, 24, 05

Had a solid finishing mile but really lost time from mile 8 through 12.  Cummulative fatigue probably the culprit - 2 marathons and 2 half marathons in last 30 days.

PM: Brown County State Park trail run of some of the scary parts of the upcoming 50 miler.  Trails are riddled with bushwacking, briars, and treacherously steep climbs for probably 40-50% of the course.  Tentative goal for next Saturday - 8 hours... if today was any indication, my first objective will be to not get lost, second is to got out at a very relxed effort for the first part of the epic journey.  today was 7.2 miles in 1:20 :)

6:15a start in Brown County at Mike's Dance Barn (really an open field next to Brown County State Park).  Fueling plan: Carried a fuel belt with 10 gels and dropped my 3 prepared SAG station care packages for myself - a bottle of light gatorade mixed with water with 2 gels taped to them.  Lessons learned on this to come when I update this with full entry with GPS data.

50.03 mi. GPSed - 9:33:43 for a 5th (or 6th) place finish.  I was delirious from about mile 42 through 50, so I think I got passed in the last 0.25 mi. by the first place female... more to come.

DWD 50 Miler

The course goes out about 5miles from the start line to a loop that's about 20 miles around Brown County State Park.  A lot of mud, water and up and down, though its mostly covered beautiful forest, so not much exposure.  There was a steady downpour during the first half of the race that felt amazing!!  I wouldn't say it got hot, but it was enough to need to stay on top of hydration.

I had to  switch watches with one of the Quaff guys since my 410 does not have enough battery life.  See link above - there's a lot of data! :)  I did not dip under 11 minute pace after mile 28.  After mile 38, I was walking about 0.5 of every mile.

6666 feet of climbing.  Looks like I dipped into the 14 minute range after 38 miles.  I remember this point of the day - I was in desperate need of fluids with the next aid station 2 more miles away.  Once I had downed a bunch of fluids and calories there, I felt like I could continue.  So, with the amount of calories that you HAVE TO take in throughout the day, it also becomes a struggle to not get the side stitches.  This became the story of the rest of the day - make it to the next aid station and work through the side/gut stitches that come with eating solid food while trying to run.  It was like a car running on fumes in to the next gas station.  Refuel, run okay for a couple of miles and then back down to low point or deep breathing trying to get rid of side stitches.

At this point, I am def. going to say this is my first and last "effort" of this distance!  Very hard.  My hat is off to the people that do these things (and longer) on a regular basis - it is a different level of toughness!!

I'm not really sure how long this will take to completely recover from...

Triple header today in CR Series.  3 races, 3 cities, one day.  AM weather was about 55 degrees and nice and cool in the woods.  by noon, it got a little warm and definitely sunny.

First race at 8am in Brown County - 4 mile trail race.  Pretty technical and lots of steep up and down.  some of the climbs were walking hills, and then some of downs were a controlled falling.  2 water crossings and lots of roots and loose stuff.  Fun and a solid effort for an 8th place finish.  3.98 mi. GPSed in 30:51

Race number 2 at noon in Seymour, IN on flat concrete course.  sun is out, with no cover anywhere- it got hot for this one.  An out and back course with a few turns.  I struggled with my normal pace after 1 mile.  Pretty indicative of some still fatigued legs requiring more recovery.  The trail race earlier in the day didn't help either.  5:41 first mile, and then fell apart.  Really hurt at 6:05 and then 6:15 pace for nect 2 miles.  Think I was about 8th place again in 18:45.  A fellow Quaff runner did however run a huge PR - 16:43 for Mr. Tim Proctor.  This guy is in his mid 40's and I used to be competitive with this guy!  :)  Stuck around to wait for the $100 door prizes they were giving away and got a massive sunburn.

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/506098152

Race number 3 was a 1 miler around a city park in Columbus at 5pm - shaded with several hairpin turns, some slowing gravel and twists in the path and, well, only a mile.  I did the only real smart thing I had done all day after the 5k, and put some ice on my legs for about 20 minutes.  Stuck it out through the pain that is mile pace and finished strong (at least).  about 8th place in 5:18.

Happy Memorial Day.  Special thanks to all who have sacrificed and continue to do so.

Off work today - AM long run.  One of my favorites - the Grandview course.  House to Grandview Lake, 7 mile loop around the lake, and back home.  kept it nice and controlled on a sore left groin/hip/quad.  Felt decent and even the whole way except for a little bit of pain on the downhills.  Made sure to not make the same mistake as last couple runs of this route - took a gel and a water bottle with me.  Started off at about 60 degrees and was probably 70 and sunny when I got done.  20 miles - 2:37:17.

Feeling a little under the weather since yesterday's long run when I thought I might have had some allergy problems.  The usually itchy eyes and runny nose, but maybe acold to boot?  I don't know - either way, I could barely keep up with today's workout.  Called it quits after 2 reps of 400m @ 5k, 800m at MP.  Pretty hot, and a lot of people out there today.  I even sounded a lilttle congested when talking.

Jogged around the track the rest of the workout.

run home from work - Seymour to Columbus.  Took half a day off to burn some accrued personal time that will turn into dreaded sick time PTO.  pretty warm - about 80 degrees.  I was feeling pretty good at the begininng of the run and throughout the day after feeling pretty crappy yesterday.  Kept it around 8min./mile most of the way. struggled at the end when I ran out of water (carrying a water bottle) and my watch died on me.  Nice enjoyable run until that point.

Now, I think I started over on recovering from this stupid cold/allergy stuff...

AM - long run back in to work from the house - left the house shortly before 5 am hoping to get to work at 7:30a.  Enjoyable run, since it was about 20 degrees cooler than yesterdays run home.  First 1.5 hours in the dark and it was little foggy.  Had the headlamp (uncomfortably) on over my manky old hat.  It was a relief totake that off.  Carried a water bottle and a couple of gels, which I was extremely thankful for near the end of the run.  I was rewarded this morning with a beautiful morning, weather wise and very little traffic for most of the run.  I did have to make a #2 pit stop (under a local steel grated bridge) :).  No attacking dogs or mean vehicles today, surprisingly.

Again, kept it around 8 min / mile.  Feeling pretty decent compared to yesterday and considering that my volume is getting up there in a hurry with these runs.

Quaff is doing a 24 hour relay to try and raise money for cancer.  Each group of 5-6 people is to run 3 x 2 hour sessions spread out over 24 hours. Our goal for the 24 hours is to run 240 miles total.  At 6min./mile average, we all keep a close watch on the capabilities of each of our groups and run intervals accordingly.

Our first session: 6AM-8AM: wonderful weather - the sunrising to start our session was awesome.  About 55 degrees and nice and low humidity.

This first one essentially a track session with full recoveries.  Our group of 5 people wound up doing 3x1mi. and 2x800m each within our first 2 hour window.  We have 2 more 2 hour sessions of somehting like this today - one at 2pm and one at 10pm.  We turned in to pretty solid efforts.  Its hard to resist going a little faster with alot of people around watching, too :)

3x1mi. - 5:30, 5:21, 5:17 with full recoveries (we're talking like 20 minute recoveries, while 4 other people run 1 mile), and then we decided to finish up the 2 hours with 800s:

2x800m - 2:25, 2:26

A little harder effort to maintain pace on the 800s than I would've liked, but, hey there were alot of people out there watching...

8.91 mi. total (between mini WUs and cooldowns) - 57:55

more to come at 2pm

Second Set: 2pm-4pm.  85 degrees and sunny - much more difficult in the heat and on somewhat tired legs.  Group decided on 800s this time.  Started off hitting the first couple hard - somebody offered some racing flats that were super light and my size for free, so had to try to run fast wearing them.  First 2 x 800s were 2:26, 2:28... paid the price - the rest hurt - 6x800s: 2:54, 47, 45, 45, 47, 47.  And then somebody got the bright idea of finishing up with a 400m.  Little kids walking around the track (a bunch of people there for other Relay for Life events- walking and kids' stuff)  liked to try and race us (for about 100m)  They actually helped along - 64 for last 400m.  That hurt.

7.59 miles total - about 53 min.

1 more 2 hour session tonight from 10pm to midnight to finish out the 24 hours.  Wow - I pulled out all the tricks to try and convince my legs that they could move fast enough for some 1mi./800 intervals again.  Could barely hobble around the track once during a WU jog.  We called in some alternates and I enjoyed the conclusion of the 24 hours of running with pizza, coffee, and snacks.  Hats off to my group and about 10 other guys who filled in randomly on top of their group assignments.  268.5 miles total for the 24 hours!!

The real story was that of all the cancer survivors and families of cancer victims.  One of the girls in my group recently lost her mom to cancer - the relay happened to fall on the day of her mother's birthday also.  On her last lap of her last rep, the DJ (guy running the loud speaker) sent out the dedication song to her mother... and, as she was coming down the home stretch and passed off the baton to the next runner, she broke down in tears.  As her husband consoled her and they held each other by the fence outside of lane 8, the emotion of the moment and the event really hit home with me.

PM: really sore and tired from yesterday.  A CR Series 5k in Mill Race Park at 3pm was the only way I was going to get in the miles I wanted today.  So, at 2pm, off I went in the heat and on some very sore legs.  3.8 miles to the park at about 9:30 pace - its 90 degrees.  Hung around a bit and then signed up and lined up with the 300+ Girls on the Run and Thouroughbreds (8-12 year olds) that sometimes double their events with the CR Series.  The starts are funny to say the least :)  I was in 50th place after 200m... Anyway, this was going to be a jog if my legs didn't loosen up at some point anyway.  It was until about 1mile in to the race.  Loosened up and got down in to the 5:30 range by the last quarter mile or so.  Doused myself with water and grabbed a banana, chatted with some guys, and then shuffled home the long way to get the rest of the miles - 6 miles at like 9:30-10:00 pace.

12.8 miles total - should give me the first 100 mile week (Mon. - Sun.) of the year.

The day off yesterday did me some good.  AM Crossroads series 5k.  Mill Race Park is about 4 miles from the house, so I jogged over at a relaxed pace from the house.  Did some strides and pickups at the park and ran the race, not expecting much, since I have notorioulsy run bad at this race at this time of year.  Kept it about 6:00 pace - which was difficult effort in the last mile.  I think I'm much improved overlast year, yet realize that I'm still in between that phase where I'm in recovery from spring races, and the switching gears to shorter/faster phase that usually happens to me this time of year.  Splits for 5k were 6:02, 5:59, 6:05, and 0:28 for a GPSed 3.07 mi.  Lots of twists and turns and one fairly steep climb for about 0.1mi.  Pleased with this time on this course - I ran about 19:00 last year.  About 7 mi. total for the morning.

AM CR Series 5k Race - 18:34.  5:47, 5:57, 6:08, slow finish.  - I suck worse than I usually do right now.

It was about 75 degrees this morning and very humid.  warmedup with a about 4miles with strides on the adjacent track.  Spent some time up to about 2 miles pulling the first place kid back to me and then really died in the last 1.11.  Its hard to compare this years' races to last years' since my spring race schedule this year was alot different.  In retrospect, 2 marathons, 2 halfs, and ended with the 50 miler within 35 days.  It is about 30 days since the 50 miler, but it hasn't been much of a recovery period.  Throwing in that 100 mile week was premature and probably ill-advised.  I have to say, I have been having fun, though.  At some point this summer, I am still not goign to give up hoping for a non-torturously humid/hot day in which I will run a solid PR for 5k and maybe 10k.

PM: about 40 minutes on bike -12 mi. out and back.  hard effort on the way back.  Kept around 20mph and the heart rate was up.

AM: easy bike in to work.  about 70 degree average during the 4:45am-6:30am ride.  Stopped several times.  The new blinky safety lights were not working too well and the rear actually bouced off the mount once when I hit a hard bump.  The 4-5 mile section of SR 11 that I frequent on these run adn bike trips needs to have a debris cleaning crew come through.  The amount of road kill, tire fragments, and loose rock is ridiculous.  Shocked that I didn't blow a tire.  19.66 miles total - 1:19:22.  Safe to say that the bike ride is a little easier than the run of the route.

AM: CR Series race:  this is the one that is in Tipton Lakes neighborhood about 3.5 miles from the house.  Good morning for running - overcast and about 70 degrees.  Jogged over from the house and ran a bit of the course with some strides to warmup.  About 5 miles of WU, which I liked this time - think I will stick with longer warmups for 5ks from now on.  Anyway, nothing too exciting about the race.  There were a couple high school kids there that did the usual 4:45 pace for about a half a mile and then faded.  Actually had one who I thought looked pretty strong hang with the moderate 5:50 pace for about a mile, but then he actually came to a stop and I never saw him again.  Solo in 1st at 5:50 pace in a 5k is pretty sad :)  The course has a nice little climb in the third mile, so my effort got pretty high on that, but I was pleased to see a time at a bit slower than my time from last year (this year was minus the moster finish kick I had to muster last year to hold off a guy).  5k Race - 18:36 -- Splits: 5:52, 6:01, 5:54 and about 5:40 pace for last bit.  Hoping it translates to a similar 10k performance as last year's around this time.  Finished up and got some water and then went back out for some MP paced stuff - 2mi. at MP - 13:00, jogged a bit and then about another half a mile pickup (about MP) to finish up before the awards were handed out.  CD with a jog back home at about 8:40 pace.  Other than some sore spots on the left leg, I am feeling like I have recovered from Spring and am rounding back in to shape.

PM: easy bike over to Menard's to pivk up new fuacet head for kitchen sink.  kept really relaxed - 50 minutes for about 12 miles

the little guy was still napping when i got home.  Got to sieze ever one of those opportunities.  Snuck out for an easy 4 mi. jog - about 8:30 pace, after the bike ride.  Very hot outside - 90 degrees and sunny.

AM - 10k "A" race in Madison IN - the race is a point to point and finishes in downtown Madison. Mile 4.3 thru 5.4 is a huge downgrade (~6.3% avg.).  60 degrees and low humidity, with a good portion of course in the shade - ideal conditions.  Running on brand new Ravenna 5's.  A crazy start line spread out across aparking lot nad then condenses in to a sharp right turn about 0.1 miles ahead.  That was interesting - was in about 50th place at that point.  It thinned as it normally does by about mile 2.  Running in 5th and 6th place with an older guy that I have run with before.  Found myself barely hanging on to this solid 50 year old. We stayed around 5:50 pace, but required a good effort from me to hang with 50YO after 3 miles.  He pulled away at about 4mi., right before the big hill, I gained back a little at the bottom of the hill, but then he stayed about 30m in front through the finish - the hill sucked away the kick in my legs.   Fun race - finish in downtown Madison.  Def. aided, but a PR and good effort for me.

Even if it was aided, that's a crazy pace for a 10k - great job.

Nice work, Joe. You have taken the Indiana blogger 10k PR from me, but I'm in Philly now :-) I think that is roughly a minute PR for you, yes?

From joebell1981 on Wed, Jul 09, 2014 at 14:46:53 from 99.39.133.24

Thanks, guys - always appreciate the encouragement and comments. Yeah, it was about a minute faster than previous PR from winter 2013. I feel like without the downhill, I would've been just under 36min. Are you running Philly Full Marathon, Jason? (A couple Quaff guys are coming up I think)

PM: Track Tuesday - big group, warm weather, kids on infield for football practice sitting in lane 1.  workout was 12x300m @ mile pace w/ 100m rec. jog.  At 5:00/mile pace, this workout became difficult quickly after rep 7 - 59, 59, 59, 57, 57, 57, 60, 60, 59, 61, 62, 62.  The short jogging rest made these tough.  Hot, humid, and sunny was a big difference from this morning's weather.

4:30am Long run - easy pace and the temp is in the 50s.  Dark most of the way and the County has decided to chip seal the roads (seemed like every road along my route), so loose gravel everywhere.  Even with headlamp on super bright mode this morning, cars seemed to be having trouble spotting me until they were pretty close.  Got alittle scary a couple times.

Had to duck in to a more sparsely populated area of a corn field for a pit stop - gross, but necessary.  20 mi. - 2:36:17.  Still noticing a couple nagging spots, mostly on left leg.  Stopped at Walmart for some nanas and protein drink.  The cup pot of coffee I'm drinking at work is wonderful this morning.

PM:  Great weather again this evening - 65 degrees and pretty sunset.  Some sort of tempo/race pace type running needed to happen toady, but not anything too serious - really want a 5k PR on Saturday.  I recently discovered the wonderful world of Strava and its segments/challenge type funtionality.  I found a popular segment with some people I knew from around town that were on the leader board, and went after it.  5:20 pace for 1.7 mi. was the segment CR.  That little segment happened to fall in the middle of one of my usual 10 milish loops.  Struggled abit near the emd, but, 1.75 mi. LT - 9:02 for a new segment record.

Felt strong most of the run, especially after a short recovery after the LT effort - 10.05 mi. total - 1:11:42

AM: Series 5k Race across town - Really wanted to go for it today.  WU with a couple miles and some strides.  Plan was a 17:29 today - start with 5:35 and go from there.  I felt fine through the first mile and then was promptly passed by some guy I had never seen before.  As he slowly pulled away, I felt myself really lose focus and started worrying more about staying with him, than what my pace should be feeling like.  So, he pulled me in to a 5:30 mile 2.  I never saw this split on my watch, because I was already distracted with the amount of self doubt that had already crept in.  He was well ahead, and I thought I had really justfallen apart, and I did after that - 5:58 for last mile.  Followed up with a pretty weak kick, gasping for air and form flailing all over the place, I struggled in 18:05.  So much for PR today.

Pretty frustrated with 5k's this year - huge 10k and 1mi. PR 2 weeks ago - both corresponding to about 17:15 in 5k, and the ability to stick with several guys in track workouts who run under 17min. 5k consistently... Why shouldn't I expect something in the low to mid 17's every time I run a flat 5k?  IDK.  At least there are plenty more opportunities.

AM Long Run: 60 degrees and foggy this morning at 8:30a when I left.  Felt pretty good weather wise to start - sun came out about 2hrs in to the run and heated things up immediately.  Started off pretty sore and tired in the legs.  Feeling a little heavy at the start.  Easy 7 mi. over to Mill Race Park for some MP/AT loops in a nice mostly shaded park - its a net zero approximate mile loop around the park street, through the covered bridge and back across sidewalk to the park entrance.  workout was goin to be 3x3mi. AT/MP.  First one was a bit slow, second felt a little too strained, but was on MP, and also carried over in to the last rep where I tried to hammer it and was in the 6:40's by mile 2 with some heat building as the sun came out, and shut it down.

3mi. AT - 6:31, 6:36, 6:37, 5 min. rec. jog,

3mi. MP - 6:28, 6:32, 6:25, 7 min. rec. jog

2mi. MP - 6:20, 6:41, shut it down - got hot and well out of AT zone,

7 mi. back home - felt pretty solid after a mile or so recovery pace post workout loops

AM 5k series race as part of long run workout.  Jogged out to the course from the house - about 10k, signed up and stayed loose with some more jogging/strides.  Vowed to myself from the start of this 5k effort that I would go out relaxed and easier than I had been in the recent 5k's.  Seemed to pay off.  The course is aided, so it also lends itself to a pretty substantial negative split on the last 1.1mi.  5:45 first mile was feeling easy - me and highschooler are racing from mile 1 through to the finish.  The first place guy is a solid 30 seconds ahead after 1.5 miles.  I have to make the same comment about my continued surprise of the people who run alot of these races, that make the same mistake every race - there's no reason for these same 3 or 4 dudes who run 19-20 minutes every race to keep going out at 5:30-5:40 pace for the first 0.5 to 1 mile.  So, predictably, after a half a mile, I was in about 10th.

Mile 2 got hard at 5:43, me and the high school kid trading back and forth.  It always fun to race with these youngsters - they are noticably affected by every move you make.

Mile 3 the youngster takes control and shows off his downhill XC speed as he leaves me in the dust in the last half mile and kick.  Looked like I was down around 4:20 pace, so I don't feel too bad

It was 5k PR - 5:45, 5:43, 5:30, and then the 4:20 pace in to finish for 17:28.

Took some time to relish the moment / recovery and shake the 14 year olds' hand, and then jog up the hill and back to the start line.  Took a couple more loops around the course for 2x5k at MP w/ 5 minute recovery between - 20:13 and 20:06 - these felt easy after the 5k effort.  hung around for 10 minutes for awards and jogged it back home.

AM: Long Run at Brown County State PArk with the group.  Jogged over to Tim's for a ride - 2.5 miles, rode to Park.  Ran for about an hour and stopped for water break, ran for another 30 minutes and then hit the last 3 miles hard to finish up.  The effort was LT by the end of the second mile, and I suffered through the last mile to finish up.  Last 3mi. AT/LT were 6:25, 6:05, 6:32.   A valuable lesson again learned from this - 6:05 is about HMP (on a flat course), but throwing hills in at that pace is dipping into the LT range for me.  If I did this one again, I'd try to run about 6:20's and go for 4-5miles.  Drove back home and ran home from Tim's and then threw in some strides and drills: 10x15-20sec pickups & some drills.

You are very fit right now, Joe. You've been hammering straight ahead for quite some time now and it's likely late marathon buildup fatigue. Your stretch of days last weekend is enough to make you feel fatigued too.

Also remember that 10 + 10 when you run significantly faster than your everyday easy recovery pace is really hard even if it is "just" marathon pace.

AM: 19.2 mi. Long Run w/ 5mi. cutdown - decided to simulate the finish from last years' Mill Race Full where I crashed and burned badly.  Lots of unexpected turns and in and out (going away from the direction of the finish line) of neighborhoods that I am familiar with. Last year, this reeked havoc with me mentally, since I ahd a good idea where I was and knew that at times I was running away from the finish line at a spot in the race where I was already struggling.  At about 20 miles, this kind of winding path toward downtown Columbus and the finish line begins.  So, I ran that today.  Took the pace down in to the low 6's for last couple miles to really drive it home in my mind.  Cut down splits were 6:45, 6:15, 6:13, 6:04, 6:01.

This capped off another solid week with 110 miles total.  This was my final hard/high volume week prior to Mill Race Marathon.

Hurting a bit in the legsm but aerobically, I found myself rarely feeling taxed.  A couple headwinds felt tough, but that was about it.

Changed my mind about the series 5k this morning, realizing I really needed a long run workout.  The local running club is free, has water stops, and there were plenty of people out running with them this morning - enough for me.  They are really a great group of people and have some generous dedicated folks making sure everybody is taken care of out there.

Wonderful weather this morning - I was actually cold in long sleeve shirt!  Very nice.  The times and MP effort was where it should have been for most of this run.  Big confidence builder - really what I needed more than anything, after a bunch of MP workouts in the humidity not turning out so well.

It actually took me a couple miles to get warmed up, but then the cooling breeze and fall like temp really helped.

Beer Mile - 2014 Champ right here!  At Quafftoberfest, a beer and music festival in Bean Blossom, IN at Bill Monroe Music Center.  My first attempt at this beer mile, thing, I DNFed.  IT is a horrible sick feeling to sprint and then chug beer!  I did much better this time:  The challenge today included the following drinks/running:

1. chug one QuaffON! Six Blonde beer,    2. run 0.25miles,   3. chug a HareTrigger IPA beer,   4. run 0.25miles,

5. chug a Busted Knuckle beer,   6. run 0.25 miles,   7. chug a PBR (  :(   ) beer,   8. run the final 0.25miles.

This went great until the PBR - I barely kept that one down.  I did manage to barely break 7 minutes and win.  You just have a really gross, sick feeling when doing this until your heart comes down.   :)

7:30 am - Mill Race Marathon - "TRAIN!!" and Side Cramps :(

Great weather this morning - about 55 degrees at the start and lo humidity.  I felt great at the start line.  Away we went down Washington in downtown Columbus and turning left in to Mill Race Park.  We get about half around the loop and hear the funniest thing - a train whistle!  Knowing that the train tracks cross the course ( and block it), I take a disbelieving look toward the downtrack location that the whistle came from.  Sure enough, a train! :(  So, the pace we were running would've put us right in front of the train, so we stepped on the gas just a bit and literally crossed 100 feet in front of the slow moving train.  Not so lucky for the 4000+ people behind us.  What a scandal - the city coordinated with the railroad properly before the race - the train conductor is quoted as saying " I thought I could make it through before the race would cross"...  Anyway, kind of non-factor for my race, fortunately, other than the 6:18 second mile I had to throw down to beat the train.  After calming the heart rate back down, I was feeling good and hitting every mile split fast or right on:

Miles 1 - 13.1:  6:23, 18, 6:24, 26, 21, 20, 24, 22, 23, 25, 24, 27, 27, 29 -- 1:23:48 for my GPSed half split.

So, the often made comment applies here- my GPSed distance at the timing mat for the half mark was 13.4 already.

Its beside the point really, anyway because at this point, I was already feeling those nasty gels just sitting in my stomach and not moving - uh oh :(.  Not 30 seconds later,  "my left side gut knotted up" (I know- very technical) and became very painful very quickly.  I walked through the mile 14.5ish water station and lifted the hands over the head trying to get rid of it.  No luck.  So the long jog and slog and sour stomach for the rest of the race proceeded.  The knots/stitches did not go away for 3-4 miles and I found myself jogging in the 7-8minute range most of the way.  Broke down and walked 2 or 3 more times.  Looks like on the pace graph that I stopped 3 times.  Here's the splits after it got ugly:

7:13, 6:46, 6:58, 7:19, 7:43, 8:00, 8:26, 7:11, 7:09, 7:30, 7:51, 8:02, 3:51 for 0.46mi.  Meaning that I ran about 1:40 for the second half :)

Finished in 3:03:40.  Not a good race, but an intersting day.

No more of this eating gels early on in the race - I'm carrying 2 (max) with caffeine in them, and only eating them if I feel like I'm hungry or depleted.

I'm going to experiment with some other gels here in the next couple weeks.  Honestly, in my longest/best training run in this cycle (18mi. @ 6:28 avg.), I only drank gatorade, some water, and 2 gels.  I'm going to do more to find a better balance on the calcium and sodium intake maybe - read this somewhere about what could cause gut cramps like I have been: "... imbalance of blood electrolytes (such as calcium, potassium, and sodium)"   Several folks have recommended sodium pills to balance gels

This was a good training run, all the same, and Columbus, OH Marathon seemed to always be the more realistic "A" race anyway with the way the heat really wreaked havoc with Mill Race last year.  Its likely to be 10-15 degrees cooler, and hopefully I'll sort out the gut issue.

The train thing is hilarious. Sorry bout the cramping gut though. I have an iron stomach, but I read some people talking about powerbar gels and being able to take more of them because they have a more liquid consistency. Maybe worth a try...

Good attitude - you'll get the next one.

From FREYGUY on Mon, Sep 29, 2014 at 11:03:02 from 69.243.143.252

I know that you trained extremely hard for this one and hoped for better. 3:03 is still not too shabby. I'll have to go with Slow Joe on the gels. I've got an iron stomach so I'm able to eat 12 or 13 for a marathon. They really help keep my pace up. Maybe experiment more during training. I have been using gels for my longer runs just so that I stay used to them.

From joebell1981 on Mon, Sep 29, 2014 at 19:08:57 from 99.39.133.24

Thanks, guys. I'm going to be experimenting with a lot of stuff here in the next 2 weeks for sure! :) Powerbar Gels and eating more of these things to try them out both on the to do list. Do have a recommended flavor you like, Joe?

From MarkP on Tue, Sep 30, 2014 at 10:40:55 from 75.162.215.89

Nice job. I hate the gels too, but they are a necessity for a marathon. Try the GUI-Vanilla flavor--Goes down the easiest or the Crank E-Gels. Keep experimenting until you find something you can tolerate.

AM: Crossraods 5k - chilly and windy morning.  Lots of familiar faces.  Good times.  WU with some strides.  Mile 1 was a quick take off and immediately into what would remain top 3 places.  Pretty consistent pace by guys in front of me, actually.  It was strange because both of them are notorius for going out really fast.  2nd place came back to me in mile 2, but I struggled after a faster mile 2, honestly.  I am a little confused on what to expect from myself.  Everything I have done in training seems to point to a lower 17 minute 5k at some point. I could not get my breathing back in control, and my heart rate seemed to be going nuts after feeeling very calm and in control after 1 mile.

5k Race - 17:52   Splits: 5:38, 5:29, 5:46, 0:57 for 0.17mi.

Drove home and went out for the added MP workout I had wanted this morning at the race, but lazily neglected.  A little warmer, but still very gusty.  Workout quickly turned into a  7 mile cutdown  with erratic effort and pace from the wind.

17:52 at 3.17 would be a 17:28 for a 5k. I had 3.17 as well. I think maybe the course may be measured using the 8' sidewalk along the High School instead of the road where we ran. Just a hunch. everyone was long Saturday.

5:15 am Long Run - Gatlinburg, TN.

Started from the cabin up in the hills.  65 degrees and raining most of the run.  Dark and "interesting"  scary listening to all the creatures moving around in the woods surrounding me. Ran down the "hill" and back up and around a bunch of the other roads.  Probably the most vertical I have ever run in training.  Garmin says 3945', Strava says 4250' of elevation gain.  Not sure what to make of that.

Had to make a pit stop on the way down the hill.  Also had to rely upon the generosity of a group of fellow cabin vacationers nearby - apparently I did not think it necessary to remember the name of the road that our cabin was on.  Fortunately, I had been close.

Recovery jogging after that and then finished up with 5xhill 25-30sec. sprints.  An interesting feature of Strava is its GAP or grade adjusted pace.  Fun to look at, but not too accurate.  It was saying that my GAP for the hill sprints was well under 4minute mile pace.  :)  Into a taper week.  Columbus, OH Marathon on Sunday Oct. 19

Columbus Ohio Marathon:

The long awaited Team QuaffON! trip to Ohio for the Nationwide Children's Hospital Columbus Marathon was a success.  From the start we all had very specific goals and plans to accomplish those goals.  One guy at 2:45 or less, and 2 of us with sub-2:50 goals.  We also had several other members running the half.  One of our faster friends had graciously agreed to pace us.

For those who may have never run this race, I highly recommend.  We jogged overfrom the hotel in about 40 degree temps and stood aorund shivering for about 30 minutes in the corral.  The start is done about as well as any marathon I have experienced.  A well planned and timed montage of very loud AC/DC accompanied by fireworks leading up to the starting gun is nothing less than exhilirating!

Away we went in a crowded "A" corral right at 7:30a.  We found ourselves easing right into our planned pace range - 6:25-6:35 (mostly on the lower end), and settled in to a nice large pack (about 20) by the first mile mark.  We planned to stay in this range until 20 miles, and then, "go"

6:33, 28, 22, 25, 23, 23, 31, 25, 20, 25, 18, 26, 30, - through the half in 1:24:47 - very close to goal pace

6:20, 18, 23, 18, 19, 6:36 (quickly determined to be a recovery mile after some decent climbing preceding and heavy breathing from us this mile)

6:21 for mile 20, and then it was go time - we put the hammer down a little too quickly (for me)

Last 6.44 miles GPSed: 5:59, 6:09, 6:06, 6:29, 6:40, 6:42, and 2:45.  I think this may have been the only small mistake today.  Maybe ease it down to 6:15 first and then on down...

26.44 mi. - 2:48:53.  New PR!

Several take aways: 1. Gels do not work for me any more.  I ate half of a gel today and stuck to only gatorade and water the whole way.  I can run the dsitance without if I am running the correct planned pace.

2. I can still manage 6:40's when the wheels are falling off, but shouldn't hop down too quickly in to a quicker pace in that last 10k.  Treat that last 7-8 miles as a gradual cutdown.

3. Sticking to the plan and having a negative split marathon is the best way to go (duh!)

Pleased to see this one, Joe. I just checked your results before you posted. Really well done. Sub-6:00 miles in the last 10k! Crazy!

CR Series 5k across town - Sunday afternoon - sunny and warm.  These are fun and good training runs more than anything.

I ran solo in second place for this one.  Wanted 2mi. at LT (At least) and then not hurt myself trying to get after the 3rd mile and kick.  The effort level was a bit higher on mile 2 than I wanted.  Marathon training not helping with the 5k time to much it seems.

8AM race start time.  First hard frost/cold front blew in just in time for the race.  25-30 degrees and windy at the start line.  Cold start - would've been good if the wind wasn't blowing in our faces for 75% of the race.  It didn't seem to be as bad as New York (looked), but it was a factor, I felt like.

6:23, 26, 25, 24, 24, 16, 20 - at 30k, I eat one gel slowly as planned.  I barely keep it down, and puke in my mouth twice over the next mile.  6:23 and 6:30 for mile 21 and mile 22.  BAM!  I hit the wall - bonk begin:  6:43, 6:45 - I chug 2 gatorades and feel dizzy a half a mile later.  I almost completely stop.  Everybody blowing past me now.  7:23 and 7:36  for mile 25 and mile 26.  I shuffle in at an 8:05 pace for the 0.33 left, as about 3 more people pass me.  26.33 GPSed - 2:51:44.  1st Half - 1:23:50 / 2nd Half - 1:27:51

Brian ran a 12 minute PR!  Awesome.  Long time coming - he has been running some fast shorter distnaces for a while now - Congrats to him as well.  Check out the cool scrubs/hoodies that IMM came up with this year instead of the foil blankets.  As usual, a very well done race.  Great medals and finish line food.  Jimmy Johns subs at the end of the shute :)

Despite having a tough last few miles, you've had a hell of a fall, Joe. You were close to breaking 2:50 last fall and you ran two marathons in two weeks averaging about that with one a good bit under that mark. Rest and recover. Cheers.

8am start for this 50k in Jackson County Start Park near Brownstown, IN.  The area recieved asignificant amount of rain in the days leading up to the race and literally stopped 30 minutes prior to the start of the race.  40 degrees and comfortable weather, but the trails were an absolute mudfest.  The 5 Quaff guys were the lone leaders from the beginnning of the race.  10 minutes in to the race as we hit the first mudhole portion of the trail, I took a very awkward step and really tweaked my left ankle.  I actually heard (more like felt the sharp pain) of it popping.  It hurt a lot when it happened, but did not continue to hurt as I went on running.  The course was a small 1 mile loop followed by a repeat of 3 10 mile loops.  So, everything went well and we stayed in the tiht 5 guy pack for big loop 1.  It actually did not really start hurting bad until half way through lap 2 (3 hours later).  DNF time.  I hobbled walking into the start finish area and called it a day stopping the watch at 21.4 miles - 3:24:39.

With the ankle in bad shape, and no real upcoming big targets for a couple months, time for a full week off.  I think this may be the first time taking more than 2or3 days off running in the alst 3 or 4 years.
