AM treadmill workout.  30 degrees and freezing rain with a thunderstorm brewing.

4x3:00 hills @ 6% - 7.5mph up to 8mph with 1:30 rec. jog, 4min. jog rec.,

4x3:00 hills @ 8% - 7mph with 1:30 rec. jogs

Our old rickety home TM takes about 30 seconds to get up to those inclines.  I was definitely at LT effort at the tail end of each of these reps., which was the intent of the workout.  This has been a decent start to spring training.

AM long run outside.  30 deg. and no wind.  A heat wave compared to recent weather.

Out and back people trail through town over to Lincoln Park.  3 pee stops and pickup and drop off of clothes.  Typical early season long run inefficiencies from me.  Ate a couple gels and sipped on water from the handheld.  Long way to go to get to goal fitness, but, it's along way to the top if you wanna rock and roll.

PM: Track Tuesday at Northside.  Big group - about 15-20 people outside freezing their asses off doing 400s and burpees...

Workout:  4 x [400m LT, 15x mountain climbers, 15x PUs, 30 back lunge, 15x squat,

400m LT, 15x sqaut jumps, and 3 more exercises (burpees in there    somewhere)]

I made it through to the 7th 400m and called it quits.  Yeah, I suck at these.  Hopefully, its really good for me, because, I hate it.

32.700.000.000.0032.70

8AM 50k in Jefferson Memorial Forest in Fairdale, KY (close to Louisville).  This race is called "Loving The Hills" for a reason!  Great weather and trail conditions except for the dreaded muddy beat up last protion of the trail where the shorter races are run (same start time for a 6miler and a 15 miler).  Met up with a buddy rpior to the race who was running the 15miler.  Good to see him and meet some new people.

The race was pretty tough - I was solo for about 4 hours out of the 5:35.  In no man's land, apparently.  Managed to pass a guy at an aid station and a guy struggling really bad early on, but, the later miles was were I could've used some company or a target or something.  I bit it hard in the first 3-4 miles going down hill - slide on my chest a few feeet before getting my hands down.  Fortunately, no lasting impacts other than some scraps and bruises.  Did really well with nutrition today:  Ate 6 gels total, with my handheld water bottle refilling it at aid stations with only water.  Had some pretzels as well for the sodium.  Think the formula is figured out for me - about 4-5 gels with water and some gatorade for a 2:45-3:00 marathon.  For 3:45 and longer ( up to about 6 hours) 6-7 gels (with caffein for all), but, a couple of them need to have the "electrolyte boost", AKA a much higher sodium content to keep the ole gut happy and out of knots.  Energy levels stayed fairly even.  The legs were not ready for trail running, nor were they ready for 5:30+.  The walking hills seemed to become less steep as the day went on :)

And my goodness - looking at the GPS data... Again with the large discrepancy between Garmin and Strava once the activity is uploaded:

http://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/692123796

https://www.strava.com/activities/251721177

I think I'll go with the Garmin data:  31.45 miles - 5:35:47 with 6040' of elev. gain.  Think I was 6th, but, was too tired to check afterward, and this race is notorius for slow posting of results.

AM Series Race in Seymour.  Cold and strong headwind south to north.  That wind felt negatively influential for about 1-2 miles of the race.  Otherwise this is a flat faster course usually.  I did not go in expecting much after the 50k last week, but, still was happy to have company and get to talk to a bunch of friends before and after.

Jogged a bit for warmup with Nathan, hit the bathroom, and toed the line.  ~6:00 pace felt manageable most of the race.  I was running clear second, about 45sec-1 minute back from one of my good friends, Luke (first place guy).  Luke missed a turn, and I was fortunate enough to see him still.  After yelling at him and getting his attention to turn around, I did a little weaving and slowed down a bit to let him catch back up and regain lead.  So, that may have been about 20-30 seconds difference, but, not worth the poor sportmanship.  That resulted in a couple 6:15 miles.  All in all, I'm about where I thought I was, maybe a little ahead, factoring in the 50k fatigue, that I am definitely still feeling.

10k - 37:34  (6:01, 5:54, 6:03, 6:15, 6:15, 5:57, 1:07)

Classy move. You wouldn't want to win that way, although if you are in the lead, you better know the course :-)

I don't know how you move up and down in distances (so drastically) so quickly and run well at both ends of the spectrum.

AM: lunch run at gym on TM.  5 mile cut down.  Started at 9.3mph down to 10.4 mph on 1%.  34:47.  Followed up with 15 minutes of pushups and attempted pull ups.

PM: run over to North side track from house at moderate effort in the snow and slush.  Got about 5 inches Monday - About 6 miles and right into the track workout with the 3 people that showed up.  Had a couple guys come over earlier in the day and shovel off lane 1!! That's how we roll in Indiana!! Workout was 12x400m with every 4th interval "hammer" We ran about 85's and 80's for hammers.  As it got dark near the end it started getting really cold.  I think we were in the single digits already when the sun was up.  Fortunately one of the other guys was also running home and was going the same way for most of the run back home.  19.7 miles. Total in about 2:35.  Pretty depleted over last 2 miles, handheld.of water and 2 gels consumed.  Oh yeah - New trail shoes broken in - Saucony Peregrine.

Do you find counting calories works? I tried it and I am not sure I got my weight down, though it was way up and I think I lost 10-13 lbs in about 10-12 weeks.

Oh yes - keeps me out of the donuts and away from pizza hut buffet 2x a week at work :) office environment is awful for diet/wt. management

I always plateau at 170-172. Guess I should stay off the scale and drink and eat with abandon :-) If I ever get to a solid 165, I owe you a beer. Or two. And a pizza hut buffet.

My problem is I work from home a lot and as soon as I get stressed, I snack. Not a bag of chips or anything, but even healthyish stuff can add up.

Grand Canyon start of Gems hike with Dad from South Bass TH.  This was am epic jounrey to get to the start of the hike.  Dad and I drove through the night to meet our ride out to the Trail Head (TH).  Fully loaded pack hiking starting at 4p.  Counting it as run miles - 2.5 miles in about 90 min. moving time.  We camped at the first flat spot just in time to beat the darkness in time to set up tents and get food cooking.  About 45 ddegrees and dropping down to 35 degrees by morning.

Start hike close to dawn.  Dad tweaks his knee about an hour in to hiking.  I watch his leg shakily limp and lean on his walking sticks.  We are in trouble.  The nearest bail out is not back to the TH - there is nobody there.  We are forced to continue to the planned meeting spot.  My dad rests a bit and the knee seems to restabilize.  We make a good push and get to Serpentine Canyon by 6p.  My dad's pace is frustratingly slow, so I am extra tired and metally drained.  Actually get aome trail running without the pack while dad is resting midday - 4.1 miles run in addition to the hike miles.  Actually turned on the GPS watch for these.Serpentine is cool - we find lots of water and consequently lots more critters.

Day 2.5 of hike - Dad's knee is progressively getting worse.  We make it through several more of the Gems (each of a series of slot canyons is named after a gem) and almost get to our goal destination.  We hike about 10 miles and get to 1.5 miles short of our goal.  Unfortunately this leaves us with 15 miles tomorrow to catch up.  10 miles has been a struggle for my dad.  Jogged up Ruby Canyon without pack in search of water/exporing.  10 minutes for about 0.8 miles is a battle on rocky grade.  I pump/filter more water and carry a heavy load with 8 liters of water on back, since we are uncertain of available water sources in the next days' section of route.

Today was the breaking point for the hike.  We wake up early and try to get after it to make our goal for the day.  Midday or so, we stop in Turquoise Canyon to try and filter some more water, as we are surprised to even find it here.  To my horror, I find out that the suction of the intake pump and consequently entire device is useless.  We can no longer filter water with primary pump.  In our rush to drive through the night and get to meet our ride out to the TH, we also have discovered that a backup (as well as other needed items) was not brought.

We fill our 2L bladders and bottles with water straight from the pools of water.  They appear to be clean, and relatively bug free...

After an hour more of hiking, it has become clear that dad cannot continue with his knee carrying the weight of his pack down and back up out of the slot canyons.  This is where the fun began today.  We attempt to have me hike ahead quickly, drop pack, and come back to carry Dad's pack.   By the time I have powered thru 4.5 miles and run back 2.5 miles to Dad and we begin discussing our status, we realize that we are so far behind at this point that we will not meet our rendezvous goal point with our other group in time for them to not be very worried about us.  Even with Dad not wearing a pack, his knee is done.  Fortunately we have a SPOT rescue device.  Dad decides to use it and abort the hike.  At this point (After Dad has already pressed the SOS button on the SPOT) we realize my pack is 1 mile away on a difficult path - so about a 30 minute trip for me to run over, repack, and power back with the pack.  Fortunately it takes the rescue helicopter about an hour to get to us after we have pressed the button (would've been unfortunate if it was life threatening), and I make it back in time.  After another 20 minutes of anxious waiting, the helicopter circles and finds a flattish spot on the ridge about 500 yards from us.  We discover that the med evac. helicopter will graciously allow me to ride out as well even though I am not injured.  Dad I discussed the options I would have if I had to hike out... Would've been an adventure!... We ride a helicopter out of the Grand Canyon.  We rise 3000' vertical in about 5 minutes and are back at the helipad at GC Airport in about 15 minutes.

AM: CR series 5k at new church close to the house.  ~5mi. jog over to race with some strides.  Cold moring - 20 degrees, but, sunny.  Flat course through some familiar neighborhoods.  In the first half mile a younger legit looking guy shoots out to a 30-40 second lead.  As he and another more well known fast starter come to me, I realize that the same thing has happened as most of the other series races.  I blow them at mile 1 and hear footsteps quickly fade.  None of the real legit guys have made it out this mroning, so I am solo the rest of the way.  With current fintess, this was a great effort for me.  I calculate I am about 10 lbs over weight and have not had a great deal of mileage recently.  Splits - 5:52, 5:38, 5:45 and a decent kick at about 5:20 pace for the partial.  17:53 5k is encouraging right now.  Slow jog home as it warms up outside.

PM: Another series race - double day today.  Run slightly farther over across town - about 10k, with some strides.  Pretty sore and tired legs to start.  The start is very similar to this morning, but, with different people.  One guy is 20-30sec. ahead by half mile, and he has come back by 1.5 miles.  I'm not as strong going by as morning race and he hangs around for a little bit.  Interesting course with a double loop around a baseball park and highschool football field.  We are forced on to a last minute alternate route as a construction job has decided to break ground on the previous route 3 days previous to race - running through grass and lots of tight turns, but, well manned with volunteers and support.

Solid effort, but, very sore and fatigued - 6:03, 5:50, 5:56, 6:06 pace for the partial :)  Yikes - I am pretty tired.  5k #2 - 18:48.  Hang around and chat with some folks and jog very slowly home.  Big mileage day - now, time for some basketball.  Go Cats!!!

Hoosier Half in Bloomington - 8am.  Great fun day with QuaffON guys and gals.  A couple of the guys and I decide to help pace one of the gals.  Perfect for me with her pace at about what I'm expecting MP to be.  Stuck with her through about mile 9 and took it on in at about HMP.  Also had a fun feature in this race - 2 different segments as official Strava mini races within the course.  The first one was at about mile 3 and about 0.25 miles - think I actually took the crown! :)

Lunch time - spinning at the gym - 6 mi. in 20 min., 15 min. core/strength after

Track tues. - 4x1k @ 5k pace - Too fast pace on first 2 combined with improper WU.  Tim is about 16:40 5k guy, where I am about 17:30 (with <17 dream pace)  Tried to hang with him - too fast on first 2 and skipped one after the 3rd rep was slow and HR was maxed.   3:23, 1 min. standing, 3:25, 1min., 3:34, Took about 5min., and one more 1k - 3:20.  3:24 = 17 min. 5k.  That doesn't seem unrealistic at some point this summer...  Meanwhile, my left hamstring is very tight and sometimes painful if I sit too long, though it does not hurt when warm or running fast.

4:45 am start for my drive time to Louisville - Met the Quaff team at the hotel - close to start line in downtown Louisville.  Jogged about 2 miles

Derby Fest marathon - pacing and taking it as it came on this run.  Plan was to go with 1:27-1:28 half pace with Quaff girl and Quaff group.  Little real training and  no expectations makes it fun!  This race goes through Churchill Downs and a lot of downtown Louisville.  Other than a spot where the full merges back with the full and halfers come over in to full water stop land, it was very smooth logistically.

Started raining after splitting off from half marathoners at mile 20.5, and it got to be a mental test...  I failed that !

It was okay - good long run and measuring stick for this summer and Fall.  Good beers and good friends afterward :)

AM - easy pace over to Walgreens from house for my health screening (required by work insurance coverage).  Numbers all pretty good - BP was way low, and pulse pretty low according to comments.  Walgreens checkout line had a poor old lady bartering about coupons or someting for 15 minutes while the line built up behind her.  Since I was right behind her filling up my handheld with the gatorade I had yet to pay for, a nice woman, who I am embarassed to say I did not remember her name, said she knew me from running, paid for my gatorade (empty bottle) and emphatically told me to "go run" !  That just made my day.  :) Beautiful day out - 70 degrees and sunny - shirtless running again.  That full gatorade emptied in to my handheld, was almost drained on the way home.  Also, consumed a clif bar in doctor's office after the health screening (had to fast for glucose up to that point).  I was literally starving!

Dances With Dirt Relay in Brown County State Park.  I have 3 of the shortest relay legs: My first leg is a loop around Ogle Lake - I am paired with running against another of the slower runners from the other team.  Our team is 4 minutes behind the other Quaff team at the start of my leg.   I am more than satisfied to cut about a minute off the lead.  5k effort and beyond on one long climb - 2.6 miles on trails and stairs - 20:38

Second leg is an out and back from the North Gate of the park.   Second leg for me is about leg number 9 overall, and we have taken the lead and pulled away to about a 4 minute gap.  Fortunately, I am paired with the same slower runner from the other team and again increase our lead by about a minute.  Big effort again with a long steep climb on trails and some stairs.  2.6 miles - 19:18.

Third Leg is the anchor leg - everybody else is already drinking beers.  We have about 5 minutes on the other team, but they have a much faster runner than me running the anchor leg.  I run scared the whole way and put in a huge effort.  I red line most of the way.  This leg starts close to the finish line.  Toughest leg of the day by far - up old ski slopes and 2 huge very steep climbs with some bush whacking.  2.86 miles - 27:19

Team Busted Knuckle wins again! :)

Quaff had a bunch of people running individual races today as well.  Congrats to Ron on winning the 50M unofficially.  He went off course and was DQed at some point.  Another Quaff girl was second and came in about an hour and half later.  50k winner strangely had the same story - Jeff Yoder won, but went off course and was DQed.

Seymour Half Marathon.  65 degrees with some windy spots and high humidity.  Everybody suffered today, but, I really sucked!

Set out at goal pace (6:07) and felt comfortable around there for first 5k.  Then, this funny thing that happens with my knee sometimes started happening again.  It feels like its giving out and then it will stiffen up suddenly and my leg will go straight.  Mostly it stays in this very uncomfortable loose state that really has my body and other leg flailing all over the place.  This continued off and on from about mile 4 to mile 8 before I just stopped at the aid station.  I did some quick stretching and chugged some gatorade.  That problem stoppped and did not come back.  This was probably only because I could not manage to get pace back below 6:20 for the remainder of the race.

PM: took off work early and ran home.  Seymour to Columbus.  Beautiful day.  This is a great long run that I have run many times.  a couple of gels and a 12 oz bottle in one hand and my phone in hte other.  Using the phone Strava GPS.  It usually pretty decent, but, it missed a bout a half a mile near the beginning of the run and then phone died a half a mile form the house.

20 miles total - about 2:45.  Depleted, but, feeling much more fit.

AM: Race 1 of the triple today.

Before that...

Ran home last night from work and left car at office.  Had intended on running back in and switching the summer goals to running an ultra (50M)... goals change pretty quickly for me, and depend what mood I'm in that day! :)  Yes - I'm a freaking wierdo, as my wife will tell you.

I felt pretty rough this morning from Long Run depletion yesterday.  I figured if I could handle a double LR pretty well, I would start down the ultra training path, but, decided on biking to Seymour and going for a decent 5k time.  Still on the fence about switching to ultra.  Current week and last couple weeks has been geared toward a 10k / 5k cycle.  I start making deals with myself when I get to switching midstream like this.  I think this morning may have been a deal breaker, since I could not muster the mentality/energy to LR back to back... to be continued.

Race went well.  Was pleased to discover that zero out of about 10 faster dudes were not participating this year.  Went out on my own in 1st and stayed there.  Controlled mile 1 at 5:50ish left me with gas in the tank to lay down 5:40 and 5:40ish for miles 2 and 3.  Decent kick in to finish at about 5:20 pace.  There was one guys about 10 seconds back, so, close enough to scare me into finishing hard.  Red line from turn around at half way point up through finish.  3.10 GPS for 17:42

PM1: Race 2 is a 2x2mi. loop in the grass at Ceraland (park) across town at 1pm.  4mi. Trail - 25:00.  Got to the race a little late and didn't have quite as much WU time as I would have liked.  The course was 2 loops around a field at a very popular park across town.  Cera Land has everything from a driving range to go carts.  Pretty cool place.  Race was similar to am 5k - solo the whole way.  5k ish Effort to hang with 6:20 pace.  Splits were - 6:19, 6:20, 6:18, 6:09.

PM2: Race 3 was a 1mile grass 2xloop in the same place.  Went home to help mommy for a little bit between the races.  So, got back to park at about 4:20.  Jogged a couple miles with some strides to WU.  Pretty hot at this point (at 5pm)  - about 85 degrees.  Two loops around an area of the same field as the earlier race.  Same kind of race - I don't hear anybody behind me after about 400m.  1mile in the grass with some rollers and spots to turn an ankle if not careful.  The effort was definitely there and I'm not even looking my watch throughout.  I am surprised to see 5:21 on the clock as I cross... 1 mi. - 5:21.  Not sure waht that means... Fun day - cookout and beers provided after this final race.

Video.  American Sniper.  Decent flick.  Depletion run today - even with crushing 2 gels and the handheld.  Very tired and just no energy after about 45 minutes.  I hit the neighborhood and 14.0 and started walking the rest.  Wife picked me on her way out of the neighborhood after the boys had woke up from nap time and took me straight to Culvers.  Time for Shake and a burger :)

AM: Trail "15k" race in Brown County State Park.  Part of an Indiana trail run and bike series.  Fortunately, the trails are very familiar from lots of previous BCSP runs and races.  Al ot of familiar faces at the race as well.  I notice that not too many people are hopping up to the front of the start as we get ready to go.  The rae starts with a healthy climb and most of everybody is aware and being conservaitve.  I find myself in about 10th, but, aaftera hlaf a mile, the crowd thins out and I'm about 6 or 7.  2 other guys in front of me figure out that they are a little overzealous over the next few miles, and allow me to pass and immediately drop off.

Again, I am solo for about 4-5 miles of the race.  The frustrating part is that I discover (too late) that I am very close to catching 3rd place.  around the 8 mile mark and getting very close to finish line, I trip on a root and bite it hard.  My left side and hip and thumb on my right hand break my fall.  As I get up the thumb immediately starts throbbing.  Fortunately, it turns out to be a strain of some sort and no breaks are evident.  I come out of the wooded area to the clearing where the finish line is and see the 3rd place guy about 200m in front.  Too bad - not enough left to catch him, though it might have been pretty close had I not face planted.

TH effort most the race.  recovered well after climbs and felt strong on the downhills.  8.65 miles - 1:03:42

AM: Series race at Mill Race Park.  Another series 5k on tis very familiar territory.  Jog from the house to park is about 3.5 miles down SR 11.  Decent morning weather wise - 60 degrees and fairly humid.  Some unknown high schoolers are there and a lot of familiar guys.

In about 5th place after 1/2 mile and some of the kids immediately start coming back.  We quickly seperate in ot top 3 and it looks like 1 nad 2 are going back and forth.  I close on them throughout the race and actually pass 2nd place with about 0.25 miles to go.  That punk passes me back and blows by :)  I ahve nothing left in the tank.  He puts about 5 sec onds on me in the kick and I am a distance 3rd.

7:30 am race in downtown Lexington, KY.  I really enjoy this race in my old home town - Lexington, KY.  Its pretty competitive, but, the 3:30 am wake up time required to drive down morning of the race is not ideal, but, totally worth it.  66 deg. and very humid.  Met up with Nathan in a parking lot downtown before the race and we go to find a couple other buddies who have graciously picked up our packets the night before.  Great to see these guys and totally geek about running stuff.

WU with some jogging and strides close to start line.  The start is nuts.  A lot of high schoolers and younger guys take off (along with the legit folks) at about 5:20 pace for the first half mile.  Its hard to tell where I actually stand, but, I guess about 50th.  Through mile 1 right around where I want to be and feel fine - 5:45.  The second mile is a sneaky uphill and is followed by the always difficult and less subtle uphill of mile 3 - 5:52, and 6:07.  I am slowly picking off people, still, and hit the downhill fourth with a decent effort - 5:45.  I see that I am in about 20th at the turn around, but, know that mile five is coming up and is the slowest of the race (the worst hills of the race).  A big effort is required for a 6:01 on this mile, leaving me a bit gassed for the net downhill last mile and finish.  The familiar sick stomach strikes again.  My heart rate was gets high for the uphill battle of mile 5 and now my stomach gives me fits the rest of the way. Hang on to 5:43 for mile 6 and 1:19 for 0.24 partial, only to be blown by in the last 100m by a young gun.  10k - 36:30, 22nd place.  Course PR

Hung around finish shute chatted with some other familiar faces.  Long recovery run with Nathan and Tim, running the course.  Hang around for awards and get a cool star shaped trophy for winning AG.  Cool street festival in downtown for fourth of July.  Those guys took off and I went back to car grab handheld and run some more miles.

Tour de Lexington - run around UK campus over to Arboretum.  Lots of construction on campus - looks like a major facelift is well under way on campus dorms and buildings.  Its about 3 miles from downtown to Arboretum (thru campus) Arboretum is a 2 mile paved loop with some nice scenery and apparently lots of people.  I had found a strava segment for the loop CCW and thought I'd give it a crack.  Made about a mile behind pace, and gave up on that idea.  Still, nice to run a couple loops and people watch.  Getting hot!  Jogged back thru campus to downtown festival.

AM: series race across town.  8 miles easy from house over to race with some strides at the end.  Ate a couple gels along the way for breakfast and stopped for a bathroom break at Kroger.  Chatted around and did some more strides 10 minutes before race.

Only one high schooler going out too fast today.  5:30 pace for a half a mile and then he slowly died and came back.  While he was in the lead, however, he took a wrong turn and led the top 5-6 guys astray with him.  When all said and done we went 3.55 total.  Fortunately, the top 3 were able to catch back up to the non-lost folks and finish 1-3.  I didn't run that well, anyway, so it was probably agood thing to have that to blame.  Been battling upper respiratory crap for the last week and half it seems like.  Feel okay, but, go in to horrible coughing fits.  Lungs feel inflamed (?)...  5:37, 5:51, 6:09, 3:26.

AM : Series Race in Scottsburg, IN.  Materfest 5k - farmers market and street fair type thing.  These are abundant in the summer/fall in Indiana.  Got there a little late and only got about 1mile with strides for WU.  About 70 degrees and lower humidity than it has been.  All alone after 2 of the youngsters' sprints wear them out in 200m.  I feel okay for 5:40 mile 1 and make it to the turn around of this straight out and back feeling decent.  5:40 for mile 2.  This is where I have struggled all year and continued that trend today.  Just a sick feeling in my stomach and whacked out breathing.  I don't understand - 10k on July 4th was in the 5:45/mile range. 5:40's in a 5k should be easy?...  I don't know. I run 6 something for mile 3 and go to my knees at the finish line and take about 2 minutes of non-movement and rally hard huffing and puffing to recover.  I feel like my fitness should put me around 17:15-17:20 in a legit 5k effort, but, have yet to even come close.  5k - 17:57

Continued on (after recovering) with post race planned workout - was going to be 3x3mi. AT, but wound up being 4M+3M AT w/ 1mi. jog recovery.  I am at least happy to find myself in the 6:20 range for first rep.  And then back to 6:50ish for AT for 3M.

Lunch Run - 6.12mi. easy - 50:27.  Out and back office to CR behind Walmart.  Lower heat and humidity today is nice.  Not feeling horribly tired - hopefully that carries over to this evening's 5k

PM - 5k run "scheduled" for 7pm in all previous ads and postings... was actually at 8pm, since the stupid local organizers advertised in the newspaper at 8pm.  Who the hell reads the newspaper. anyway?  Whatever.  The meant that this Daddy trying to get home for bed time at 8pm does not get to run in te 5k he has paid for.  Ticked off, I ran the course + some at about AT.  5mi. AM: Jog over to meet Tim Proctor at the corner of TerLake/CarrHill and on to Harr Lakes for 5k Series Race.  Did a couple strides when we got there and snuck off to the woods for a pit stop.  From the start, Tim and fell into about 5:45 pace and it turned into  LT on uphills and cruise/recover on down hills.  Tim ;ed for a bit and normally much faster than me, but, has been training for cyclocross on bike and not much running.  I went by at about midway and held on to about same pace with a bit more effort.

5:46, 5:42 (5:35 GAP), 5:34 (5:46 GAP), and 5:14 pace for partial for 17:37.  GAP is a good indicator of the hilliness of the course and the effort required.  Course loses 65 ft. over the last mile.

Ran the course again after a short recovery with 2 miles at AT, and then jogged home with Tim.

You are still looking Strong. Now that we are settled in I'm trying to get back to my A game. I noticed that most of both of our PR's on Garmin a year old. :( We are going to have to pick away at those. I signed up for The Road Home Half yesterday. Last year 1:18 won it. That probably means that it tough.

Thanks, man. Glad you are settled - time to reap the benefits of your hard work to get moved down there! Cool that you have that group down there. Yes we def. need to get those! - I have not had the breakthrough I thought I would in 5k after the BG 10k hard training, but, I think its coming. I actually also reg. for a half - This Sunday in Richmond, IN. Good luck in The Road Home - sounds fun!

Reading Eat and Run by Mr. Jurek, and getting inspired... dietary choses have improved.

Part 1 of Tuesday Double - Lunch run at a 1 mile loop around Silver Creek TWP Park in Sellersburg, IN after Parternering Meeting for I-65.  Almost exactly 1 mile around the paved loop.  A couple of brief, but steep hills.  7.5mi. MP (Goal Pace) - kept it around 6:15 avg.  Anything faster than 6:15 right now quickly approaches sub-AT effort.  Encouraging and feeling much closer to fitness goal, but, if I were to go out and attempt 26.2 at 6:15 right now, bad things would happen.

Part 2 of Tues Double - Track workout at CEntral Track.  5x0.5mi. LT - TH, 4x200m max

Intended on more 1/2 mile reps, but, started really straining on rep 4 and 5.  Recovered and ended up with some controlled pickups - 200m.  Pretty hot on the track this evening sprinklers pointed toward the track kept me alive.  Definitely feeling Part 1 of the day, but, that's the point of these, I guess.  Kept the halves under 3 min. at least.

Pretty good, but, still ran into the same stomach sickness around mile 2-2.5 that continues to plague me as my heart rate gets high.  Without that, I'm thinking the big break through at 5k would've happened.  5:41, 5:33, 5:34, 5:14 pace for last partial - 17:28.  4 mile jog home.  A little sore and painful in the left leg usually sore spots.

Early am drive up to Richmond, IN for a small town half marathon.  Cool course - 2 loops with loop 2 as a reverse of loop 1.  A couple of nasty spots with some good hills.  Great weather - 55-60 degrees and sunny with low humidity.  Shaded for 60% of course on paved trail and neighborhoods.

Race start at 7:30 am after waiting around, several bathroom stops, and about a mile WU.  Frequent bathroom stops seems to be one of the side the effects of the newly found vegan way of life... ;)

Taking off from the start I am a little surprised to find myself leading.  I hear about 3 or 4 behind me heavy breathing after a mile.  It is downhill and feels easy going through in 5:56.  I realize today will be a good day for me.  Was a little doubtful/apprehensive after going all out in 5k yesterday.

Mile 2 levels out and I focus on relaxing... a little too much.  One other guy is still hanging around so I start chatting with him - revealing that he is struggling with the pace.  Mile 2 is a little too laxed at 6:17.  I think I do this guy a favor by dropping him at mile 3, speeding back up to 5:56.  The course rolled steadily throughout and mile 4 was a climb - 6:09.  Mile 5 and 6  inlcudes a long climb that is roughly 3-4% avg.- 6:03 and 6:13.  Still feeling strong and well in control effort wise once the hill is conquered.  Loop 1 is 10k distance traversing through start finish area and timing mat at the hospital.  Back around parking lot cones and turn around and reverse the same loop - and go down that monster hill for most of mile 7 - a very aided 5:43 feels easy.  6:02 for level mile 8, 5:52 for aided mile 9, and now some more rollers - 6:10, 6:08, 6:02.  The last mile of the course is a nasty climb back up to the hospital and finish line.  I feel like I am crushing it, and only manage a 6:13 mile 13 and 6:08 for partial.  GPS is a bit short - 13.01.  Nonetheless, translated, this is a big PR for half marathon.  Race clock finish time = 1:18:44.  Translated Finish time of 13.11 ~ 1:19:20ish.  Call it a PR.

That a nice PR. You are coming into shape nicely. And the win! I'm still waiting to win something longer than 10k.

Looks like the adjusted pace is sub-6:00, which sounds about right given the hills. Mile 5-6 looks like it had some change.

Vegan, eh? I did the diet for some time and found it actually decreased my bathroom stops (lots of unprocessed foods, and so on). I've since started eating meat again but I am drawn to a lot of vegan dishes and the idea of it.

I don't think I'm doing the vegan thing right... too much fiber it seems like. I'm holding strong so far. It's been especially tough at my place of work.

Vegan is pretty hard core for anyone working at indot or living in Seymour. Stick with that idea and try going vegetarian or vegetarian fir 2 of 3 meals a day. It's not as much of a stretch

AM "15k" Trail Race in Southwestway Park near Indy.  These are always fun - trails are a nice departure from punding the pavement.  Got there early enough to get some easy miles in.  Ran most of the course, with several bathroom stops - 7 miles - 1:01:38.  Race start was as crazy as I thought it would be and not as many near the front as I thought.  Me and a group of about 5 go out together.  About 0.1 in to the course it turns in to single track.  One of the crazies up front, who was dressed up in William Wallace costum (I'm not kidding - this guy had half his face painted blue and a kilt!) bites it hard and totally wipes out.  Definitely highlight of the day :)

Anyway, me and 2 other guys continue on, both of them in front of me.  As we round down in to a gulley and the trail widens out, I feel like a pass is on order.  So, I made sure to blow by both of them and put the hammer down on the nasty climb  that follwed.  Only one of them stays with me.  At some point at one ofthe wierd tunr spots where we don't know where to go, he passes me back and leads for a while.  We run "together" for about 4.5-5 miles before I begin to notice the pace slacking.  I sit on him and let it slack for 0.5 miles or so and then blow by him.  He doesn't respond and I hear his breathing get further behind me.

Solo for last 3mi, or so, and in to the finish in 1:01:09.  GPS 8.77 miles makes it about 7min avg.   TH effort for most of the race (where the second place guys wasn't leading).

AM - last big long run at race pace - run of the actually Mill Race Full course: set up one water bottle around the half.  Started at actually start line around 6:30 am.  Made it a mile in to the park and had to make pit stop number 2 of the morning (will have to make sure this is worked out on race morning - earlier start of eating and morning routine would help).

After this, it was very enjoyable and encouraging.  Carrying handheld with plain water, and eating Roctane GU gels seems to be my best strategy for nutrition.  Today, my stomach was okay - no gut cramps or drops in energy, but, some pretty uncomfortable feelings at times in the gut area.  Took a Clif gel about 15-20min. before and did not drink any coffee.  The Clif's have not agreed with me before, but, have 100mg of caffeine and seemed an acceptable sub for coffee.  Probably will have to make this a little earlier in the morning before race start as well.  Felt alittle soggy/heavy in the gut area for first hour or so.  Maybe something with a little more sodium prior to race as well.

Any way: 6:25-6:30 pace was very manageable.  Had about 65 degrees and fair humidity level throughout the run.  Went 30k and took 2 miles of recovery pace, and then finished off with MP back around 6:30-6:35.  Very encouraging - this is a Mill Race course PR and felt pretty relaxed most of the way.  26.22 mi. - 2:52:38

AM 15k Series Race across town.  Run from house out to Firehouseis about 8.5 miles.  Run most of the way in the dark with the headlamp.  The usual 2nd bathroom stop at Kroger along the way, and easy pace.  Perfect temps - 55 degrees and clear skies.  Maybe a little bit of wind, but, noting too severe.  Pretty cool race set up - Its a 3 loop course with a relay option - there's also an individual 5k and 10k that are staggered start times to try and coincide with the 15k and relay.  The overall "challenge" winner wins a race specific fireman's helmet ( a real helmet with a race logo on it).  Me and another QuaffON! guy lead out from the start and are close for the first couple miles ( I am a little disappointed to look down at a 6:13 first mile).  He's usally much faster than me, and I am surprised that I here him fading as I ease down in to about 5:50 pace on mile 2.  Solo effort the rest of the way.  Its good to have him behind me (running scared) and the relay runners and other races out there spread out over the course throughout, though (its a very flat and boring course).

Splits: 6:13, 5:51, 5:51, 5:46, 5:48, 5:53, 5:50, 5:51, 6:02, 5:34 pace for 0.34mi. partial.  Mile 1 was chatting with Cole (the QuaffON! guy) and not focusing.  Mile 9 was legitimate fitness shortfall - I was struggling.

15k PR - 54:57

~1mi. CD with Quaff crew (several others there on relays) and got a ride home.

Mill Race Marathon - 7:30am start starting downtown Columbus, IN (my hometown).  I have struggled with this race every year, so, this year (about 1 month ago), I ran the course with most of it at goal race pace (intended to do about 18 @MP).  Turned out to be a good morning that morning and I easily ran it in decent time for me - 2:52 for full 26.2.

Today, the weather again felt like a decent temperature, but, a deceptive humidity, and ever present 15 mph gust seemed to plague me at every turn.  Another bad day for this race for me.  A couple of the QuaffON guys were even pacing and breaking wind for the first 10k.  6:20's were easy enough while they broke the wind in front of me.  As soon as they split off, and the course made a turn shortly after 10k, a head wind smacked me in the face.  About a half mile of that, and my effort level was noticeably out of MP range.  Dumbly/stubbornly, I pressed on trying to maintain target pace.  I quickly paid the price for my mistake as I tried to take in the first gel- Stomach issues from mile 11 on.  I hovered around 7 min. for a while. started really dropping in to some 7:30's-8:00 in last 10k.  Scared some poor little girl at mile 22-23 aid station.  Tried to drink water and barked/puked in my mouth.  3:04:19 for a GPS 26.6 miles.  My final excuse - the course was long, too.  Tough day. Strange that I have never done well on actual race day for this race.

AM Series 5k Race in Seymour.  Chili this morning and rain spitting on the windshield as I was leaving the house - almost kept me at home.  Had to text Nathan to confirm his attendance to convince myself to go :)

Not raining in Seymour fortunately, but, much cooler than it has been.  Windy also (hurricane weather making its way in land).  A great turnout (about 400), including a couple of younger guys and the local guy who wins every year toeing the line.  A young guy, the usual winner, and a funny older gentlemen going for a 1 mile PR apparently, shot off as the gun went off.  Older guy and younger guy fell back before one mile mark, but, the winner (Ryan) continued to pull away.  To my surprise, I never started reeling him in as in previous years.  He wound up running 16:4x and a huge PR for him.

A decent showing for me: Mile 1 could've been a little more controlled, but, 5:29, and then a 5:49 for mile 2 evened me back out.  I recovered with a 5:39 last mile and 0:50 for the partial.  17:46 - 5k a week after a draining effort in another failed marathon - I'll take it.

Chicago is a big fun city and I enjoyed spending a couple of busy days with Nathan's family experiencing it together.  I drove up Saturday and met them out our hotel close to Midway and hopped the train to go downtown for expo/packet pickup.  It was a solid 1 hour ride downtown.  We saw a bunch of the sites when we got off at the wrong stop.  Soldier Field is very cool.  Lots of decent pictures.  The expo was crazy and fun and we went through fairly quickly to get back and off our feet.

Race morning we left around 5am to give us plenty of time for transit.  We met some cool new folks in our travels and missed our stop at Roosevelt when the doors shut very quickly.  Got down there in plenty of time for me to take about 4 bathroom breaks... more on that.

Sat around a bit shivering and made our way next to A corral.  I jogged for about 5 minutes and we made our way in to the corral around 7:10.  Cool to see the Amer.DevPrgm elites getting loaded into the elite corral and here the elite-elites announced.  A seemingly decent morning weather-wise. About 55 degrees and a bit windy.  Away we went - I seemed to be in about the correct place as we started clicking off 6:15-6:20 pace.  Feeling decent and into a good group with not too many annoying chatty folks.

My troubles start at about 8 miles and get worse.  Energy levels plummet and shortness of breath.  A comparison of splits between timing mats and GPS data are a bit conflicting:

Another epic fail.   :)

So, the answer to why I have been crushing everything else up to half marathon in races and doing pretty well in long runs in training, yet, can't put together a good marathon?

A random acquantaince through the QuaffON! group stuff clued me in to a little thing I have heard thrown around and never really paid much attention to:  iron deficiency.  I literally randomly bumped into her today as we were exiting the 27th mile party at Grant Park.  Of course, I went straight to whining/complaining about low energy/shortness of breath, and hating gels when she asked about my race... SO I read up on it online (so now I'm an expert, right? )  - lots of coffee and bathroom stops race morning and lots of coffee in the regular diet during training.  Shortness of breath, dizziness at times during and after the race, and low energy level for seemingly no reason.  I mean, come on! Mile 8? After a good training buildup, proper taper and PR at every distance this summer?  Some other factors to consider:  I have gone vegan, cut out eating Total cereal religiously every morning (100% DV of iron), and drink lots of coffee all the time (like 3 cups a day).  It all adds up it seems.

Got my free beers out of the deal, at least.  I admit, after 4 months of not drinking and being dehydrated, the Goose Island IPA tasted like piss. :)  So now, it looks like I no longer consume caffeine, either.

congrats on such a great time at Chicago even though your not too happy with you performance. Getting the right amount of iron in your system seems to be an easy fix. It's especially important in the transfer of oxygen in the blood stream and red blood cell formation isn't it? I do it with raw spinich daily and a 65 mg Iron supplement(325 mg Ferrous Sulfate) daily.........and with all that I'm still old, slow and out of breath...!

From FREYGUY on Mon, Oct 12, 2015 at 20:07:01 from 70.198.137.106

I don't care what you say, a sub 3 hour marathon is a good day. Studying our splits and it is interesting. Your splits gradually decline. I have even splits and a sharp drop in pace. Neither are good. Like you said, yours seems to be more energy related. My legs just quit on me all at once and I had to walk it out. We will eventually figure this thing out yet :)

From RileyCook on Tue, Oct 13, 2015 at 21:22:06 from 73.52.134.194

Sorry it didn't go according to plan Joe. That seemed to be a theme for the day for most runners; a lot of very large, positive splits. And yeah my GPS watch had me running 5-6 seconds faster per mile than the mile markers on course. I turned my autolap off and tried to only pay attention to the split when I hit it manually at the mile markers. It's way less depressing that way. Keep at it; if iron is the culprit you're be killing it in a short time.

Sorry about the disappointment in the race and the challenges with energy levels. Marathon training takes a lot out of you and sometimes finding all the right elements to get that key mixture is tough. Keep it up and the goal will be achieved.

thinking about diet...you gave up a lot going into this. Meat, beer and now coffee...tell me you still have chocolate?!

Thanks everybody - appreciate the kind words and helpful advice as always :)

Coffee and tea have an ingredient that is a suppressant for iron absorption... from what I understand. I've been cutting down on the coffee. Iron supplemented now with return to Total cereal, a multivitamin iron inclusive, and more spinach than before. I took a couple of serious diet cheat days :)

Riley - your goal is very difficult to say the least, but, its awesome that you are totally capable given the right day/conditions/etc. work in harmony. That day is coming soon, I'd wager. Race report is agonizing, and I'm glad your okay ;) (Ballsy effort to finish!)

From Jason D on Thu, Oct 15, 2015 at 20:19:46 from 68.80.27.222

Tough race, Joe. Your diet shift is pretty serious but I think it is more workable with distance running than most people credit it. When I ate a vegan diet I rarely had digestion issues and my weight would stay within a tenth of a pound for days at a time. I had to eat quite a lot and my weight didn't fall off as I had hoped. Since I've "been back on the meat" I haven't notice too many changes.

I take it you weren't supplementing with iron prior to this? I take it but I have no idea if I need to. I feel like nutrition is such a guessing game.

Anyway . . . I was bummed when I got my text Sunday that things didn't go well for you but I knew it might be on the warm side too, as Chicago can be this time of year.

I see that you changed up the rest of your fall schedule recently. What are the plans for the next few races?

AM Marathon up near Indy, Fort Ben  - about an hour drive from the house.  This is a good race - scenic course, well run, nice course set up with water stops, etc. that is being taken over by the competing company owner of the Indy Monumental Mar., I think.  The full marathon is going away next year, and will be a half marathon and 5k only.  Found somebody selling their bib cheap, to boot.  So, really didn't want to miss out. So, 6 days after Chicago, I am running another marathon :)

Went in with a conservative mindset, and with a plan to test out a nutrition plan only drinking sports drink.  Its a pretty hilly course, and I planned on taking the climbing portions extra conservatively, also.  Aside from the bathroom break at mile 11, the nutrition and gut issues went pretty well, but, were likely due to much cooler conditions (37-45 degrees).

I was surprised to find that the sports drink kept me enrgetic, and full (enough) feeling.  Don't know if the bathroom break was avoidable.  I really crashed hard in the last 10k, but, I'm chalking that one up to the recent marathon.

Great weather for running today's Monumental Marathon in downtown Indy.  40 degrees at the start.  50ish degrees at the finish, and no wind, with some cloud cover.  Looking at the Garmin data, it probably could have been a bit less humid...  Fun times - It was great to meet some new guys Nathan brought up from KY, with a couple (?) of them running their first marathon.  They very graciously picked up my packet at the expo the night before, and I met them at their hotel (a couple blocks from the start line).  As we made our ways over to the start line, I lost them somewhere...  I met up and found a lot of Quaffers.  Former runner Danny Webb even snapped some pictures of us... (JK, Danny).

The most evenly paced, smart marathon I have run.  After 2 marathon fails this fall with a stubborn "forcing" of 6:20 pace on some warmer days, I decided to tone it back to about 6:30 and see how it went.  Off to a relaxed and easy start.  around downtown and through Monument Circle with the usual loss of signal in mile 2 (under the bridge).  Half split is 1:25:44, and I am feeling in control.  Controlled 20 miles in 2:10, no mile splits over 6:39 (except the glitchy mile 2 under the long bridge where the GPS signal is lost).  I push pretty hard in the last 10k to stay around 6:30, and even had a good kick left in me for a finish sprint to pass by a couple guys.  Considering this is my 4th marathon since September 26, I consider this race result a huge success.

I have been notoriously bad at pacing/positive split in marathon - looking at placings at the the different timing mats, I was in like 90th at the half mat, but finished 59th... ~1 minute negative split!

After layering up and climbing in my sleeping bag laid on top of ground pad, I quickly realized I should have set up the tent... and that I had some very loud neighbors at the adjacent park camp site.  After freezing my butt off and getting really annoyed at a couple loud guys (who I should've joined by their fire), I moved on down to another site, and leaned the seat back in the car.  Slept about 4 hours, maybe.  The race morning couldn't come sooner.  It did, and it was pretty cold.  Met up up with a old buddy from youth soccer days and his friend and enjoyed catching up with them before the race.  Warmed by the fire in my scantily cladness (arm wamers and singlet) prior to race, and then, gladly, away we went.

A large group of 8-10 went out and around the paved campground starting section of the course.  As we got on to trails, the topo changes gradually started.  The group quickly thinned down to 5 by mile 5, and then down to 4 by mile 8.  Fortunately, I had some knowledge of wht would lie ahead.  Rough Trail is just that - rough.  There is constant up and down and several spots with very steep climbing sections.  Combined with a good mix of longer climbs, but, less severe, the course really wore me down.  Energy levels were great on the GU gels and frequent sips of water from handheld.  By mile 18-20, I had opened up a 3 minute lead.  I was surprised to find myself in the lead and evaluated the lead at an out and back section to confirm my pleasant shock.  Confidently, and a little scared, I forged on, and probably should have almost lost the race out of shear stupidity  I was bonking hard core at literally mile 28 and thought about DNFing out at mile 29.  I was extremely lucky that a very generous hiker was passing by and offered a Clif Bar and water.  I almost immediately bounced back and held on to collect the win and... prize $ !!

Sadly, as I rounded bcak in to the Start/Finish area, I saw a guy who I knew was in 50k, but, had not seen all day ahead of me.  As I came upon him and went to pass, I inquired how he was and pulled the ole "what are u getting for distance" question on him.  When he informed of 27 something, I knew.  I looked down at well over 31.  This less than honest guy cut the course and even tried to claim it at as legit for second place.  I mean, come on, I actually kicked to cross the finish line ahead him... The race director's sorted it out, but, not til after the guy made off with some prize.

I got hang out with the old friend and crush some foods.  Drove home and ate lots of more foods along the way.

Won my first Ultra - Yaaah !

I didn't realize you won. Congratulations. That's a admirable effort that close to a marathon. I guess being a wimp about doing a low stakes road 50k two weeks after a marathon is not an option for me now!

AM Turkey Trot in Lexington, KY.  I have run this one the last 3 years at Keeneland race track.  Its a hilly slow course and sually poor weather.  This year was the exception weather wise.  Pretty windy, but, a very pleasant 55 degrees at the 9am start.  Its great to always see lots of old friends from my old stomping grounds.

The race itself went better than expected.  There was little race specific training time devoted to 5k distance this fall, and a 50k/5+ hours on hilly trails 12 days prior to 5k wasn't likely to help either.

Fortunately, a couple buddies running right around my goal time led the way.  It took everything I had to hang with them, and really might have even done better without the dreaded return of a very upset stomach.  Choking back puke about the time I could've be mounting a good kick was not ideal.

5:49, 5:32, 5:55, 4:19 pace for partial.  17:50 for 8th Place.  A fun race - there were 5-6 people within 2 seconds.

Now, to eats lots of food.

Dec. 31: AM treadmill at Anytime Fitness - 5 miles easy in 38:53.

2015 year in review:

3400 total miles, which is about 150 more than I have ever logged.  Consistency seemed to be the key.  No huge weeks (only had 3 x 100 mile weeks) or 50mi.+ ultras this year, but, alot more weeks in the 70-80 range than in previous years.  Targetted races were successful at most distances, but, not the (always heavily targeted) road marathon.  40 total races this year, but, again, a lot were not targeted and served as good training if anything.  Spent a lot of time on the treadmill this year.  If it wasn't for a lack of elevation gain tracking, I'd be okay with it.  TM is great for controlled environment and precision on pace and grade, but, that climbing/elev. change doesn't show up on GPS.

2 x hilly trail 50k: 5:35 at LLTH, and 5:25 at Rough Trail in Red River Gorge (FTW!),

5 x marathons (6 if you count the 2:52 in training): 3:02:20(Louisville), 3:04:19(Mill Race), 2:59:53(Chicago), 3:00:11(Indy-6 days after Chicago), and a 2:50:25 at IMM.  I ran 4 fall marathons and a 50k - starting with Mill Race at the end of Setember (26th) and ending with the Rough Trail 50k on November 14th.

PRs in Half Marathon - 1:19:20ish (converted) and 15k - 54:57

PRs in Bluegrass 10k - 36:31, and Reindeer Romp 8k - 29:32

Close to PR in 5k - 17:29, but, a bunch of 5k doubles and sub 18's this year.

Given the learning curve I should have acquired through failure, I predict I should be about the smartest age grouper/middle of the packer in the midwest!

Tried vegan diet for a couple months.  The verdict is still out - not sure I could continue that long term.  Went sober for about 6 months.  This wasn't as difficult as I would have guessed it to be.

Great group runs in Brown County and races with fellow Quaffers and friends throughout the year were the best part - QuaffON!

Good year, Joe. That string of marathons was pretty crazy. Happy New Year.
