10AM - Off Work for election day.

~2hours w/ 2x2mi. Tempo.  Ran out Carr Hill/Youth Camp for some hilly tempo efforts.  It is 70 degrees and sunny.  Drank most of handheld and ate one gel.  Feeling decent energy/leg wise.  Aerobically, it doesn't feel like I am where I was a couple months ago.  The hill efforts were taxing... and pace was right around goal MP.

Great weather for running today's Monumental Marathon in downtown Indy.  40 degrees at the start.  50ish degrees at the finish, and no wind, with some cloud cover.  Looking at the Garmin data, it probably could have been a bit less humid...  Fun times - It was great to meet some new guys Nathan brought up from KY, with a couple (?) of them running their first marathon.  They very graciously picked up my packet at the expo the night before, and I met them at their hotel (a couple blocks from the start line).  As we made our ways over to the start line, I lost them somewhere...  I met up and found a lot of Quaffers.  Former runner Danny Webb even snapped some pictures of us... (JK, Danny).

The most evenly paced, smart marathon I have run.  After 2 marathon fails this fall with a stubborn "forcing" of 6:20 pace on some warmer days, I decided to tone it back to about 6:30 and see how it went.  Off to a relaxed and easy start.  around downtown and through Monument Circle with the usual loss of signal in mile 2 (under the bridge).  Half split is 1:25:44, and I am feeling in control.  Controlled 20 miles in 2:10, no mile splits over 6:39 (except the glitchy mile 2 under the long bridge where the GPS signal is lost).  I push pretty hard in the last 10k to stay around 6:30, and even had a good kick left in me for a finish sprint to pass by a couple guys.  Considering this is my 4th marathon since September 26, I consider this race result a huge success.

I have been notoriously bad at pacing/positive split in marathon - looking at placings at the the different timing mats, I was in like 90th at the half mat, but finished 59th... ~1 minute negative split!

AM: ride to Sycamore Land Trust Trail - about 6.5 miles.  Easy 2 laps on that loop ~ 2.5 miles, and then ride home.  Made it all the way to the neighborhood, got distracted and somehow veered toward curb, where I over corrected, panicked and smashed in to a neighbor's mailbox.  That evil mailbox came out of nowhere!  knocked me off the bike and I smashed on to the ground cracking my helmet.  Yikes.  Stiff neck and some scrapes and bruises.  Lucky I was wearing that helmet!

Drove 3 hrs to Red River Gorge - Southeastern Kentucky, from Columbus, IN the night before an early Saturday morning 50k trail race, and intended on camping out in tent.  When I got there at 9p, I didn't have the heart to set up a tent and thought I wouldn't need it... After layering up and climbing in my sleeping bag laid on top of ground pad, I quickly realized I should have set up the tent... and that I had some very loud neighbors at the adjacent park camp site.  After freezing my butt off and getting really annoyed at a couple loud guys (who I should've joined by their fire), I moved on down to another site, and leaned the seat back in the car.  Slept about 4 hours, maybe.  The race morning couldn't come sooner.  It did, and it was pretty cold.  Met up up with a old buddy from youth soccer days and his friend and enjoyed catching up with them before the race.  Warmed by the fire in my scantily cladness (arm wamers and singlet) prior to race, and then, gladly, away we went.

A large group of 8-10 went out and around the paved campground starting section of the course.  As we got on to trails, the topo changes gradually started.  The group quickly thinned down to 5 by mile 5, and then down to 4 by mile 8.  Fortunately, I had some knowledge of wht would lie ahead.  Rough Trail is just that - rough.  There is constant up and down and several spots with very steep climbing sections.  Combined with a good mix of longer climbs, but, less severe, the course really wore me down.  Energy levels were great on the GU gels and frequent sips of water from handheld.  By mile 18-20, I had opened up a 3 minute lead.  I was surprised to find myself in the lead and evaluated the lead at an out and back section to confirm my pleasant shock.  Confidently, and a little scared, I forged on, and probably should have almost lost the race out of shear stupidity  I was bonking hard core at literally mile 28 and thought about DNFing out at mile 29.  I was extremely lucky that a very generous hiker was passing by and offered a Clif Bar and water.  I almost immediately bounced back and held on to collect the win and... prize $ !!

Sadly, as I rounded bcak in to the Start/Finish area, I saw a guy who I knew was in 50k, but, had not seen all day ahead of me.  As I came upon him and went to pass, I inquired how he was and pulled the ole "what are u getting for distance" question on him.  When he informed of 27 something, I knew.  I looked down at well over 31.  This less than honest guy cut the course and even tried to claim it at as legit for second place.  I mean, come on, I actually kicked to cross the finish line ahead him... The race director's sorted it out, but, not til after the guy made off with some prize.

I got hang out with the old friend and crush some foods.  Drove home and ate lots of more foods along the way.

Won my first Ultra - Yaaah !

AM Turkey Trot in Lexington, KY.  I have run this one the last 3 years at Keeneland race track.  Its a hilly slow course and sually poor weather.  This year was the exception weather wise.  Pretty windy, but, a very pleasant 55 degrees at the 9am start.  Its great to always see lots of old friends from my old stomping grounds.

The race itself went better than expected.  There was little race specific training time devoted to 5k distance this fall, and a 50k/5+ hours on hilly trails 12 days prior to 5k wasn't likely to help either.

Fortunately, a couple buddies running right around my goal time led the way.  It took everything I had to hang with them, and really might have even done better without the dreaded return of a very upset stomach.  Choking back puke about the time I could've be mounting a good kick was not ideal.

5:49, 5:32, 5:55, 4:19 pace for partial.  17:50 for 8th Place.  A fun race - there were 5-6 people within 2 seconds.

Now, to eats lots of food.
