Met my fellow BBK group at the JRP trail this morning.  I have been somewhat frustrated lately because my pace has slowed down and the effort is still the same.  Tuesday's run was a prime example.   When I got there and felt the wind I was sure that today would be no different.  Somewhere in the low 9's and a hard effort.  I was pleasantly surprised.  I felt great today and the hill that I normally hate even wasn't too bad.  We finished 8 as a group and then I stayed with Mike, Peggy and Jamison to add on a little more.  I ran 1 more mile out with them and then turned around and headed back on my own.  I dropped the pace and started feeling good and decided to push the last mile.  Mile 10 was 7:38 - Wahoo!  My ave pace for the run was 8:38 - finally back where I would like it to be.  What a great way to start 2009.

Happy Running!

Jody,

Nice to see you out yesterday. Sounds like you had a great clip going. I faded back quite a bit, everyone seemed to have a spring in their step even with bitter cold winds.

I have a feeling this is going to be a great year of running.

From Kelli on Fri, Jan 02, 2009 at 19:13:35

GREAT RUN, Jody. That is an awesome pace for the winds you guys were fighting. And way to go on that last mile!

Thanks for being so nice to Rachel when I was a no-show!! What a day to not show up. DA!

Have a good weekend!

Cheris and I were going to meet to run 13 today, but with the snow we decided to play it safe and stay indoors.  I met Eric and Alan at the oval for some mental training.  The first 9 flew by and then they left and I was on my own for some more.  I picked up the pace for the next 3.  It was pretty empty in the beginning but was packed by the end.  The US Speedskating team was warming up and Apollo Anton Ohno was there as well.  Kind of cool to be running on the same track as an Olympic Gold Medalist.

Kelli,

They are a little tender but I knew that going into it. Not my favorite form of running but I was wimpy with the weather and did not want to slip on the ice.

Ran this morning with Paula.  We had a great time despite the cold.  I had over dressed and shedded a jacket at about mile 1. It was icy on the side streets but the main roads were dry so we opted to stick to those and dodge cars. The rest was great.

Heavens Jody, you are HARD CORE! It was 9 degrees when I left my house at 7:30. You are impressive. I have a rule of not running in sub-20 degree weather. I know, I'm a wimp:)

And like Kelli said, I didn't know it was possible to overdress on a day like today:)

I was so excited to run in sunny San Diego and thought that 49 degrees sounded wonderful, BUT a long sleeve T and shorts were not quite warm enough.  Once I had  warmed up I decided since I was short on time I would do some speed work.  I ended up feeling really good by the end and my last mile was 7:33.

Today was one of the most icy runs I have ever had.  There was black ice everywhere.  We thought once we got on the main road it would be better and then once we made it to the Lake Park trail we would be fine, but there was black ice the entire time.  We took it really slow and made it home safe, but not the smartest decision.

Tomorrow is always better! It was good to see your speedy self for a sec, but I could not hear you becasue of the wind.

From Cheryl on Thu, Jan 08, 2009 at 14:06:54

Not to put a damper on things, but I heard it's supposed to snow tonight/tomorrow, so I'm not sure tomorrow's run will be much better. But the day after that should be great. If only there was no wind, all runs would be pretty good. We were all in the same boat this morning, feeling the run was hard and just wasn't the greatest. But we're tough and persevered through, so good job everyone!

Met up with fellow BBK'ers and we ran a proposed route for the Riverton 1/2 marathon.  I complained my way through the run - thanks to everyone who put up with it, especially Michelle.  But when all was said and done it was a good run.  It will be fair course with some good hills along the way.  We had a lot of ice and snow on the trail segments and at a couple of points we had to walk.  Our pace was all over the place because of that but we ended with 8:44 which considering some of the conditions, not too bad.

I need a major attitude adjustment before Painters.  One week to get my act together and start enjoying running again because this week was miserable.

Ran on the treadmill in Alaska.  Most of you know how I feel about the treadmill and the start of today's run was more of the same.  The first treadmill I was on did not show the distance, just calories and time and after 5 min of trying to run and fiddle with it, I gave up and moved to the other.  This one showed the distance but my ipod dropped and needed to be reset, so a few more minutes of running and trying to fix things.  I finally got going and did some hill repeats with equal recovery but picked up the pace in between sets.  It ended up being a really good run, especially since the alternative was running when it is -30.

Funny iPod vs. treadmill story of my own. When I was training for the marathon 2 years ago, I was doing a lot of indoor 90 minute runs on the treadmill in the basement. Well I was jamming out to I think Men at Work .. and I'm singing "WHO CAN IT BEEE NOW".. and my arm hits the ipod cord and the ipod goes flying and bounces off the back of the treadmill so I finish the run and then go to retrieve it afterwards and it was paused.. I plugged it in and finished the song haha.

I had been dreading today for weeks.  I just have not been feeling the need to race, but needed to get this out of the way for the Runner's Series.   I drove over with Marcie and then met up with Cheris, Michelle M, Dean and Kris. We had planned to start slow and do a progressive run.  We ended up starting a little faster than we had planned but it was a good run.  I felt really good until the last two miles and was really worried about keeping up with Michelle and Cheris as they dropped down to MP for 2009.   It was more mental than physical but I was happy to run with Julie for a few minutes.  I ended up right in goal and PR'd for a non-aided course.  I actually really liked the course and would like to run it again.  They had changed the course and it ended up measuring long for everyone - I measured 13:18 but I forgot to start my watch as well.

It was great to see everyone afterwards and catch up with Christi and some friends of ours that we haven't seen in years.   This was a good way to start 2009 and to stick with my goal of enjoying running.

Paula called and canceled because she had sick kids and I was so tempted to get back in bed because I hate being alone in the dark. But I was brave and went out and actually had a good run.  I ran the "big block" and I could tell my legs were tired going up the hill but not horrible.  I changed the route a bit from our usual to give me more mileage and then I received the benefit of having the last 1.5 down hill - hence 1 fast aided mile.

Met up with my BBK friends for a cold run on the JRP.  We had a good group today and warmed up for about 4.5 miles and then did 3.5 miles at tempo pace and then cooled down for a mile.  Our tempo pace was progressive starting out at about 7:45 - 8:00 and ending at 7:00 - 7:15.  This was the first good run I have had in a while which makes me very happy.  I think part of it was because instead of focusing on a pace or number to aim for, I ran by feel.  If you had told me that we would be in the low 7's, my mental blockade against fast would have taken over.  Better to go by feel.

Today was my first day with the Garmin (New Toys, YEA!) and Kelli had me check mine because her pace said 9:40 and she knew we were faster than that. Mine said 7:50 and I hit a wall, my mind said "hey, you can't run that fast this long...you're tired and need to stop" I was really starting to feel good until that point! Dang Garmin! I still love it though, I love knowing MY distance and pace. It wasn't set for miles splits (Scott had to help me with that) but my AP was 8:48 for 10 miles. I really wish I wouldn't have slowed down after I saw the pace, stupid mind! I still need to conquer it!

Met the BBK this morning.  I ran the warm up with Kris and had a great chat with her.  We then started the workout and we were doing hills today.  I was okay going up, but the coming down was killing my left knee and lower leg (same issue as yesterday).  I did two of the mile repeats and then decided to leave the group and cool down.  I am sad that I did not finish the work out but I need to fix my leg before it gets worse.  I scraped it a little last night and my husband has been warned that tonight he will be working on it.  I also scheduled a massage for tomorrow.   I am rethinking my plans over the next couple of weeks though.  I am going back to India for 2 more weeks of training and was gearing up for some treadmill workouts, but  I am now thinking I might just take some time off and give my body a break.  It is 10 weeks until Boston and I would rather get this taken care of now then deal with it in March or April.

Well I found where they moved the treadmills from my last visit.  They made a brand new nice fitness center at the hotel.  This is a good thing.  They have hidden the controls to the A/C and have it too warm.  This was a bad thing, nothing like running in a sauna.   I stretched again last night and was actually feeling really well.  I started out just to see how I felt and while no major pains there were a few aches along the way.  I am happy though with the run and especially the pace.  I am sore now, so I know that I need to stretch more.  I am going to try to get into a routine of stretching after the run and again at night to help these issues.

Met the regular Saturday group for our first 20 miler as we prepare for Boston.  I was very nervous and was preparing myself for the possibility that I might not be able to keep up or have to quit because my longest run in preparation was a 14 miler 5 weeks ago. ( I missed 16 & 18 because I was in India).   I  was pleasantly surprised that I felt great until about mile 17 and I really began to tire.   I did stay with the group the entire time and we had a good pace.  I knew we would be running the hill at the Daybreak Temple and I was okay with that until I saw it.  I have never wanted to just close my eyes and run so bad, but the desire to not fall and get hurt made me keep them open.

I was nervous leading up to today because my knees had been bothering me all week.  After the drive to SG, my hips were tight and really beginning to ache.  Dusty, my sweet sister in law, worked on my hips and VOILA - no pain!

Marcie and I met at my parents and ran to catch the buses up to the start.  We ran 3.38 for our warm up.  We were going to try to stay together but got separated right after the start.   I was on my own and it took me a couple of mile to get my rhythm but I ended up feeling really good.  I was unsure of the last half of the race becuase the route was different than when I ran it 2 yrs ago, so I ended up holding back a little because I was unsure of the last 2 miles.   I finished with a time of 47.14 which is a PR.  It is 1 min faster than my DesNews 10k in 2008 and 5 min faster than my Spectrum 10K in 2007.   I am very happy with my time, but I need to get over my mental block of pushing hard because I could have done better.  I am extremely happy that I felt great and I am ready to finish training for Boston.

Way to go Jody! That is an awesome time. I told Julie last night that I am really looking forward to May 27th right now. That would be the day after Ogden. I'm kind of tired of training and I'm dreaming of the easier month after Ogden. I think a lot of it is this cold weather. It stinks. We will get back to where running is fun and not a chore. Hopefully:)

Met Paula before the snow started.  We started out and about 1.5 miles into the run decided we were over dressed and shedded a layer.    The snow started picking up right after that.  Two stops to stretch my hips along the way, but no soreness from Saturday's 20 miler, just heavy, heavy legs.   Our pace was good except the first mile was in the 10's.  My first mile is always so slow and it really affects our overall pace, not quite sure what to do.

I was missing the Riverton Half because my daughters have softball and I am coaching my two youngest girls team and cannot miss.  I made a plan to run out to my sisters and then run with her group that way I would not be tempted to sleep in.

I started at 5:30 and did a good paced warm up for 3.25 miles all up hill.  Ran up 5600 W to the golf course and had a good pace for those miles.  Recovered for .75 and prepared for the 4 tempo miles I was planning.  Started the tempo and my splits were:

7:58 steep down and then back up and then gradual downhill

7:52 flat, slight up hill

7:56 slight up hill and the a short down hill

7:33 flat as a pancake

I am so happy with this part of the work out.  I have a very hard time doing speed work on my own and with a harder warm up I was unsure how I would feel. One mile cool down to my sisters house.  Ave pace for these 9 miles:  8:37

Part II:  Met my sister Andee, and her neighbors and had a fun run with them.  These are the reward for the previous 9 miles.  It was great to meet her friends and she has a great group to run with. I really appreciate them letting me tag along.

Ran the Boston Marathon - What an amazing experience!

Michelle M, Michelle N, Cheris, Julie and I left for the buses at 6:55 and began to worry when we saw the lines.  They actually moved very fast and we were able to get on the bus and on our way.  Our bus driver got lost on the way which did cause some worry but it would be better to sit on the bus then out in the cold.   Once we got there we had enough time to find Kris and Dean and then get in the port-a-poty line.  I think we were the last people to use them.  We began walking down to the corrals and did not make it to ours before it started.  We ended up starting in 22 instead of 16 but our plan was to really hold back the first two miles and then pick up from there.  We followed our plan very well due to the great pacing of Michelle M.  The details are below.

Mile 1: 9:32  a little slower than planned but a nice start

Mile 2: 8:58  right where we want to be

Mile 3: 8:41 starting to pick up a little

Mile 4: 8:26  rolled my ankle in a pot hole and felt it pull right up my IT band - exactly how I hurt it earlier this year.  Not sure what to think.

Mile 5: 8:33 feeling okay, GU'd

Mile 6: 8:34 Another good mile

Mile 7: 8:35 same

Mile 8: 8:29 same

Mile 9: 8:27 starting to hurt a little from the ankle roll - Saw some missionaries somewhere around this mile, it was fun to cheer with them

Mile 10: 8:32 took some IB from Michelle along with my GU

Mile 11:  8:44 slower, while waiting for Michelle M and Dean in the bathrooms

Mile 12:  8:16 running with some other missionaries who became bandits for a few miles

Mile 13: 8:27 not liking this at all

Mile 14:  8:37 not liking it even more

Mile 15: 8:26 Yeah - the hills start.  I had been so worried about the Newton hills but felt great once we started and really began to have fun, GU'd

Mile 16: 8:27 feeling good

Mile 17: 8:33 Still feeling good

Mile 18:  8:33 Still feeling good

Mile 19: 8:33 More goodness

Mile 20:  8:36 still good, GU'd

Mile 21:  8:56 Heartbreak Hill - Not bad at all.

Mile 22: 8:06 a little surge knowing I was done with the 4 Newton hills.  Let Michelle M, Julie, Cheris and Dean go at the end of 22.

Mile 23:  8:34 GU'd

Mile 24: 8:40 - Can see the CITGO sign in the distance and know that when I get there, 1 mile left - it just took forever to get there.  Ran by Fenway

Mile 25: 8:35  Glad it is over but still feeling pretty good

Mile 26: 8:42 Passing people along the way and feel pretty good heading up to the convention ctr and turning on Boylston.

.2: 8:17  Had to keep telling myself that I was not done until I cross the finish line but felt good.

I loved the course!  Not just because of the great fans but I liked the constant rolling hills.  It was great to run the majority of it with friends and get to share this experience.  It was windy that day 10- 15 mph head wind the entire course but not horrible.  It was a great day for running and a great experience.  I was glad we had planned on running a little slower, so that we could enjoy the entire course and have a great time.   Thank you Cheryl and Peggy for all the hill work outs - they paid off big time!

Ran with the BBK's.  We met at 5:15 for warm up and I felt really good.  I had stretched and scraped yesterday and took some IB before I left.  The problem from yesterday was not there at all but my hip flexor really bothered me as well as some residual soreness  in my knee.    Will keep doing the same and take tomorrow very easy.  It was fun to see everyone again because it had  been a week since we came home.

Ran with Paula.  I had decided that today would be short and easy, in order to see how my leg would do.  I stretched and scraped again last night.  The hip flexor is definitely related to the IT Band and it pulling on the hip flexor.  It did not flare up until the IT band was already hurting.  The IT band starting hurting around 2 miles.  The good news is I know what to do for an upset IT band, the bad news is I really am tired of dealing with it.

Met the BBK's for our Thursday work out.  I went at 5:15 for the extra warm up and then after rejoining the others we ran for about a mile and then did what was supposed to be a 2 mile tempo run.  I opted for a 2 mile easy run and then finished up with a couple more easy paced miles.  I felt better today.  I did not get home until 10 pm last night so no scraping or stretching.  I took IB before leaving to run this morning and I felt pretty good but did not want to over do.  Hopefully this is a good sign.

Met the BBK's for our Thursday workout.  I felt better then yesterday and made it over 1.5 miles completely pain free - that is .5 farther than yesterday.  The rest of the time there was some pain but not to the point that I could not run - This is a good sign and I hope it continues.  All my miles were easy, I did pick up the pace as the run progressed but still easy miles.  Overall I am pleased.  Two things that I have changes this week, along with my weekly massage sessions, are:

1.  Foam Roller - $18.99 from Target is a bargin.  Using it nightly - nice and slow over my areas of issues but it is helping keep things loose.

2.  I have been more consitent and better about getting some protien in me after my runs.  I had developed a bad habit of not eating until 1 - 1.5 hrs after I was done and running out the door to work.

Met up with my fellow BBK'ers for Wasatch Back.  I was in Van 2 so we got to sleep in a little.   I was the first runner in our van and I was a little anxious to get going.  I ran twice on Friday and here are my legs -

#1 - Leg 7.  This is a 4 mile easy stretch at the first major exchange.  I started out pretty quick and kept picking people off.  It was very hot and I have not done any training in the heat but seemed to be okay.  So glad to have the first leg done and with some success.  Ave pace 7:49

#2 - Leg 19.  This is a 3.8 mile stretch at the third major exchange at East Canyon.  I started out feeling great up the first climb and attacked the down hill.  I had worn a long sleeve shirt and started overheating on the next climb, but with the reflector, head lamp and carrying my iphone because I forgot my ipod (this was the one leg I wanted it for) I could not take it off.  I felt good until about half way up and then I really started to struggle and mentally was having a hard time staying focused.   Once I reached the crest and hit the flat I was able to pick it back up and finished strong.  Ave Pace 9:07

Overall felt okay about the day.  Leg 1 was good but very frustrated and disappointed by myself with leg 2.   I can do better and really need to get my act together.

NIce work Jody!! Those are ROCKIN' paces, you did a great job, don't beat yourself up over that second leg, those were hard - no/little sleep and fatigue from the first run. You stayed mentally tough and fought it out!! Nice to not hear any issues with ITB.

From cheryl on Sun, Jun 21, 2009 at 00:12:15 from 76.27.66.153

That second leg is TOUGH, it should be rated difficult, not moderate. I think that's a great time for such a steep hill.

From Kelli on Sun, Jun 21, 2009 at 17:40:12 from 71.219.76.64

We were really surprised by that second leg you ran. The map on the race bible just never does the hills justice! That was a super hard leg and you did GREAT!!!!

Awesome job on that first leg, too!

It was great seeing you guys here and there at the beginning of the race!

Leg 30 - This is the first leg at the final major exchange.  We got about 3 hrs of sleep in the car and I was so tired I did not hear people getting up and out of the van.   Slept great which is CRAZY!

I was pretty nervous to start my last leg because my second run did not go well.   Started out and felt pretty good and began pushing the pace as I could see people to pick off.  There were not alot because we had gained quite a bit of time over night.  It was a beautiful morning in Heber and I ended up feeling really good.   I wish I had warmed up a little so that I did not have to warm up during my leg but felt very strong at the end.  Ave Pace 7:50

It was a great experience and I learned quite a bit since this was my first Wasatch Back.   Thanks to a Great BBK team and friends who made this such a fun experience.  Our team time was 25:58:19 and we were the 8th team overall to finish.   Due to some poor course marking our last runner took a wrong turn along with many others so we ended up running 189 miles instead of 188.   Can't wait to see where we we ended up finishing.

We arrived at that last exchange and saw your car there, slept for about an hour, woke up and you guys were gone. I told Scott you guys were going to be super fast as you started way after us and were already gone! SO VERY COOL!!!!

In Florida for a conference for work.  It is so humid!  I woke up and looked outside and it was dark and windy and I really did not want to go out but once I was out the door I was very grateful for the wind and it trying to keep things cool.  One mile was on the beach  and the rest on the road and sidewalks following the shore.   My legs are very tired from Wasatch back, no soreness, just tired.

Cheryl, I am in St. Pete's Beach. A wonderful vacation spot but I spend the entire day in a freezing cold conference room. I am going to miss the hills tomorrow - There are none here so no chance to try to replicate the work out.

Hope the wedding went well and you enjoyed the day. We thought of you often during Wasatch Back and wished you were with us - Next year for sure.

Wish I could have met you at Bluffdale Badlands. Running in humidity is quite different but it will just make you stronger for the drier Utah climate, I think it evens out a little with the lower altitude, in any case, hope you can enjoy Florida.

From cheryl on Wed, Jun 24, 2009 at 14:09:40 from 76.27.66.153

Yes, I know Florida, for the most part, has zero hills. The last time I was there I looked for anything with just a little incline, and could find nothing. Thanks for the well-wishes about the wedding. The day was very fun. I did miss doing the relay, but, like you say, there is always next year.

I was planning on getting up early to get 10 miles in today but I could not go to sleep last night.  I finally fell asleep around 2 am and when my alarm went off at 5:30 I went back to sleep.  I headed out tonight at 6:30  and the temp was 90 degrees, not sure on the humidity but it was high and 20 mile an hour winds - quite the combination.  I was going to try to replicate the hill work out the BBK's were planning on but it is flat, flat, flat - not a hill in sight.    So I opted for heat training.  I felt really good until mile 5 and I got tired really fast.  I did not carry water or gatorade so I convinced myself to get in one more mile and then I could walk on the beach.  SOOO worth it.  I ended up walking for about 1 mile on the beach back up to the hotel and it was a beautiful evening and sunset.

In San Diego for work.  We stayed at a different hotel then we normally do and I was excited to run some place different.  I started out and ended up running 4 miles out to the b beach and should have turned around and headed back the same way. But no, there was a great big hill calling my name.  I decided to run up it and thought (bad idea) that I would come down and run int W. Point Loma Blvd - the road I had run on out to the beach.  Made it up the .25 mile hill, I am not sure of the grade but it was extremely steep, and then came back down and no W. Point Loma Blvd.   Decided to go up and over the next hill because for sure I will run into my street, nope, no luck.  I started really getting worried at this point and continued on and found a super nice guy in his driveway who told me "give me the street name, I will get you there".  Told him where I was staying and how I had gotten to where I was and he gave me very easy directions back to the hotel.   I started back to the hotel and had to really pick up the pace because I had no idea how far away it was.   I ended up with 9 miles rather than 8 and found a great loop to run if I ever stay out in that area again, but I was really worried for a few minutes.  I am usually on my own when I travel but I had my boss with me and I was dreading the call to him saying I was lost and did not know how to get back.  Luckily I did not have to make that call.  I looked at the map when I got back to SLC and realized how far in the wrong direction I had gone, but it was a great run and I would run it again if I get the chance.

Not sure if I was ready to race today but glad I had planned on having Jay take Paula and my sister up to the start so I could not back out.   We warmed up for 1.4 miles and ran into Julie, Michelle, Teena and Smooth.

We started pretty fast, my first two miles were sub 7's and I was feeling great.  They did not have the water station set up at the 1/2 way point and I was needing water very badly but was still feeling good.   I felt great until the 5 mile mark and started to really feel the fatigue in my legs.  Took a drink and walked through the water stop and then picked back up.   I had been debating whether or not my lack of kick at the end is physical or mental and today it was physical.   Mentally I was trying to kick the last stretch but physically the legs would not go.   My splits were:

6:49

6:51

7:12

7:06

7:13

7:37

1:31 for the last .2

I am very happy with my time of 44:20.  This is a PR for me and a 4 min improvement over last years DesNews 10K.   I am more tired that I expected afterwards and ended up not adding on more mileage.   I think all the travel the last 6 wks is taking its toll but there is no end in sight.

Met the BBK's for our Parkway Palisades run.  It was great to be back together with everyone and always great to run the hills.  I had decided that my objective this week is to focus on mileage and getting my mileage back to where it needs to be after the last month of craziness.  SO, with that decided I knew that today I could not push hard and just focus on the work out at a more comfortable pace.   I tried to pick it up a little on the 2mile hilly tempo but it was not happening at all.  It was however a very good progressive run.

We got talking about were we were 1 yr ago and that we were on the same schedule this year with a 20 mile run the week before Hobble Creek.    It got me thinking that the first time I ran the Parkway Palisades hill was the week of Hobble Creek and I thought I was going to DIE!  Nice to know that today was at a comfortable pace and still faster than I was a year ago.

Met the BBK's for a tempo run.  We warmed up for 3 miles and then began a 6.5 mile tempo run.   I had planned on taking it easy but started with Cheryl and was enjoying visiting with her.  She took off after a mile and I decided to keep pushing a little and ended up pushing more than I should have but felt really good.  Nice to know I haven't lost everything.   Cooled down with Michelle M, Cheryl and Alan and we had stood around to long while we were regrouping because the legs were nice and stiff.

I am in St. George for a weekend with family.  I met Marcie early and my very nice Father drove us up the marathon route.  We started one mile prior to Veyo and then ran down the course.   I felt great!  I know that I pushed more than I should have for a training run but it is hard to slow down with all the down hill.   It definitly boosted my confidence for the marathon.   This run was done with an ave pace of 8:04 - 17 seconds faster than my average at last years marathon.   I could have easily done more mileage, not sure if I am ready for 26.2 but so excited.

Not really sure how to feel about today.  I am very disappointed in my performance but considering the events of this week and all the travel this summer, I am trying to be more positive.

I had been out of town Monday and Tuesday and usually run but was completely wiped out.  I was attributing that to a delayed flight and only about 4 hours of sleep one night.  But come Thursday, it probably had more to do with the fact that I was getting sick.   Thursday and Friday were miserable and I debated on even running but went ahead anyways.  I really began to regret my decision on the bus ride up because I felt horrible.   I started feeling better as we warmed up but the nasal congestion and coughing would not go away.

I started a little faster than I should have but quickly let Dean, Julie and Michelle N go ahead.   I considered GU'ing at mile 3 but decided against it and that probably wasn't the best decision.  By the time I GU'd at 6.5 I was feeling very fatigued, but picked back up and it was hit and miss for the next 4.5 miles.   Some good times, some bad times but survival.   Not sure what happened at the 11.5 mile water stop but I almost collapsed at the mister.   The last mile on the race always drags on but the worst is the run on the grass.  I always slow down because I am so afraid of falling or rolling my ankle.

I really wish I had more good to say, but some races are just that way.    Quite a contrast from my 20 miler last week.    So a good reality check.   Time to refocus and train hard for 3-4 more weeks before taper time.  Travel is still going to happen, can't get out of that but hopefully I will feel better soon.

UGH!  I went to group early because now that school has started I have to be home on time.  I got there at 5 and Kris was there as well.  We ran together until 5:30 and then met back with the regular early workout group.   I felt okay during the first 30 min but tired.  We then started the next 30 min or regular warm up and I was dragging.  I chatted with Cheryl for a few minutes but told her to go ahead because I could not keep up.  When we regrouped at 6 am I really considered leaving early but with SGM 6 weeks away, I decided to stick around.   Cheris and I ended up avoiding the hills and running very easy until 6:45.   I expect some fatigue from Saturday, but today was the extreme and I am not feeling well again.   Not really sure if time off is the answer at this point or trying to push through and hoping I get feeling better soon.   What a time to get sick!  I made it all last winter without getting sick and I have now been sick twice this summer.   Enough ranting, hoping tomorrow is better.

I am in San Diego today for work. My Dad had told me that the street my hotel was on would take me to the ocean.  I knew that I was inland but decided to run it and see how far I could get in 4 miles out and another 4 back to the hotel.   I did not make it to the ocean, I would guess another 4 miles and I would have.  It was rolling downhill out and I took it easy and then rolling up hill back.   Once I hit the turn around I got some sort of kick because I picked up the pace significantly on the way back.   I was in the 9's out and mid to low 8's back.   It was finally nice to feel good even if it was at sea level.

Not a good day.   I do not know what I was thinking but I thought I could meet at 5:15 and still get all my miles in - NOPE!   We warmed up and my legs are still very fatigued and I am getting frustrated.   We did a 2 mile tempo and then went to do Yasso 800's.   I did the first in 3:45 - to slow and the second in 3:43 - still to slow.  I had some tugging in my right knee so I left the track and went and ran 2 more miles on my own.

I am taking tomorrow off because I am traveling and going to sleep in until 5 am.   I am hoping that a day of rest will be what my legs need and I can get it back together for Thursday.  At this point I am not even sure what to expect for SGM.  I am not training the way I should and my legs are not recovering at all so I am trying to have a good attitude but if this continues it could be ugly.  I am not sure if I continue to push through and hope the taper is enough or do I try to rest this week and push the next two..........

Today was one of my favorite workouts  - 5K repeats.  We met at 5:00 am and  I had a plan for the workout already.  1st 5K easy; 2nd 5K moderate hard pace; 3rd 5K push hard.   I was tired from yesterday's travel but got up and felt good during the warm up and 2nd 5K.  with about 1.25 miles left during the second, Dean and Nancy came along and said they were going to run with me but it was more like dragging me along.  I really appreciate them pushing me even though it didn't go right with my plan.  Sometimes I just need a nudge.   Third 5K - my legs were very tired starting but felt better than I thought and I caught Nancy, and she and I stayed together the rest of the way.  Cooled down with Mike and Peggy.   I felt so much better than I have which is great but I am still far from where I was prior to my India trip and that is frustrating.

Garrett and Marcie are in town and staying down at our family's cabin in Provo Canyon so we invited ourselves along.  Jay is working at UVU today and Marcie and I wanted to run together.   We decided to run down the canyon from Vivian and then continue on and have Jay come and pick us up.  We started out with a warm up mile and then Marcie took it easy and I did some MP miles.   Once we hit 6.5 I realized I was unsure of where to go so we decided to head back up.   We turned around and there was a really good head wind.  Marcie pulled away early on and then I stopped at about 8.5 to GU and get a drink and told her to go on ahead and I would see her at Vivian.   Mile 10 was incredibly rough but I managed to push through, something I have not been able to do the last few weeks.  My left hip had a strange popping in the first couple of miles and then was a little painful and then nothing really the remaining miles but it is very, very painful tonight.  Not quite sure what is going on but will stretch good.   Lots of runners out today, saw Jeff L and Scott and Kelli.

This is my big week, I am hoping to peak at 70 miles prior to SGM and this is the week.    I am traveling most the week so I am changing my normal routine up a little.  Mondays are usually recovery days but with the holiday I had a chance to get some mileage in.   The original plan was to warm up, do some tempo and then cool down, but with my hip I decided to do easy miles.   The hip is much better today do to plenty of massage yesterday but it took a few miles for the tightness to wear off.   I ran with Paula for the first 8 and we did a very nice job staying just around 9 min miles with the first mile slow because of the warm up.  Stopped back at my house for a gu and drink and then went to finish.  I was able to keep it slow for a few miles but it didn't last long and I started picking up the pace and my splits for the second half were 8:43 (1.25 miles up hill), 8:37, 8:14, 7:57, 8:05, 7:42, 8:06.  Not quite so good at taking it easy but the hip held up nicely.   We had started late, 7:00 am, so that I could get some "heat" training in and I seemed to do okay but after about 5 miles into the second half of the run I could have used some water.

Met Cheris, Julie, both Michelle's, Angela, Melanie and Annette at Dimple Dell and to run Wasatch Blvd.   I have been a little scared to do this run all week because I know how hilly it is.

Good Things

It is over and I didn't die.  Today marks the start of the taper.

I ran with a great group of people today

I was stronger as the run went on with some of my fastest miles on the last couple, which were flat.

It is almost the same exact pace as last years 22 miler, however that was a much easier course

Met my goal for the week, even when I had plenty of reasons to not.

Bad Thing

I walked twice.  This is a first for me in a long training run.  Both were up steep hills - but booo!

Lessons Learned

My concerns on whether I was losing fitness or just extremely exhausted are no more.  I am completely exhausted.    I am not sore at all now, just so tired that all I want to do is lay down.   All the travel has taken it's toll along with all the eating out, my diet is terrible.    The good thing is I can fix this.  I have no scheduled travel between now and the SGM and I will be getting plenty of rest.

On race day I need to stick to my own plan and not get caught up in all the excitement.

There you have it.   Glad I did it.  Actually want to do it again because I know that I am stronger than what I was today, but glad it will not be for a while.

Okay - here is the deal.

Hip hurt, was not getting better despite pushing through and thinking that something might change.  Apparently I am a little stubborn.  Went and had a massage last Wednesday and no significant improvement, even with rest.  So I went to Dr. Toronto on Monday and was diagnosed with bursitis in the hip, not really surprised by that, and put on prednisone.  The hip is feeling much better but there is some residual soreness in the glute, hip flexor, quad and hamstring.  Lots of little specific trigger points.  He said that I should be able to run on Saturday and not due any further damage so that is the plan.  I am completely unsure of what Saturday will bring, other than the fact I am very well rested.    At this point I am not quite sure of what my goals are, I would still like to run well if possible but having a great experience will take presidence this time.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL RUNNING SGM!

Michelle M and Cheris passed me during the first mile and they were speedy.   I saw Dean about mile 3 and couldn't catch him but he had stopped and came up behind me right before mile 5.  We stayed together until about mile 15 and he was an awesome pacer!  Took me right up Veyo nice and steady and along the way.   I felt great until about mile 21 and then I got really tired - could have had a nap.    Waved hi to my mom and kids at the church and then tried really hard to finish strong.    The last couple of miles were very difficult.   Told myself no walking and was able to finish pretty strong.

I am very happy with my time and a new PR.  It was great to see everyone have such great races.

I got my husband's horrible cold.  I thought that he might have had swine flu, but the doctor said no, just a cold.  I started a Zpack and felt much better this morning than I did last night, but probably should not have run.  It was like Hobblecreek all over again.  Tight lungs, coughing, phlem....pretty nasty.  The only bright side is that I realized how sick I was when I ran Hobblecreek and that, yes, it affected my time.

I decided not to go out and run with the BBK's today so that I could stay close to home and stop at any time.  I also thought that this would help me control the pace - Big Fat Lie!     I started out feeling really good for about 1.5 miles and then the hip started it's usual nonsense.   I also picked up the pace much more than I should be right now, it wasn't really that fast - 8:30's but to fast considering my hip and rebuilding phase.   I started getting a weird pain in my mid/lower quad and not quite sure about it.

I was on my own today and decided that I was going to do what I call "favorite run".  It is 3 miles up hill to Westridge, 2 miles of some up and down through the golf course and out by Frito Lay and then another 3 downhill home.  I love the view of the valley and the lake from the ridge and despite the cloud cover today, there was still a little view.

I decided to just run by feel and not push to much.  My  IT band started right at 1.25 miles but worked it's way out by mile 3.   I was pleasantly surprised by my pace up the hills 9:31, 9:15 9:16 - because I wasn't really pushing and they have a pretty good grade.   The next two were 8:35 & 8:16 and then 7:48, 7:35 and 7:35 back home.

Needless to say this is the best run I have had in a really, really long time.  Other than SGM, probably since before Labor Day.   I am finishing up the prednisone and I am hoping that the issues will continue to improve with stretching and massage.

Longest run since the marathon.  Pretty sad it has taken me so long to only get to 9 miles.   I met Paula early and we did the first 3.5 miles up hill and then looped back and had mostly down hill with some flat until I dropped her off at 7.5.  I then finished on my own running and looping through the neighboorhood.  I felt really good, but was really slow.

My garmin is having issues.  It is losing reception and cannot find it again unless I turn it off and back on.  Thursday it started in a tunnel on the trail but today it happened twice and both times I was in wide open space.  Not sure what to do, will have to do some research.

Very humbling run with the BBK's.  I realized how out of shape I really am.   Lots of work to do.

Ran with Paula.  Very sore from being worked on yesterday.

Started out much like Tuesday and I was struggling to keep up and feel good.   I dropped back a little at mile 5 but stayed close and felt better.  I was able to finish strong- that is a good sign.

On my own this morning.  First two miles were very slow but then had to keep reminding myself it is a recovery day and to save something for tomorrow.

Met the BBK's for a run around Parkway Palisades.   Good run but I can still tell that I am lagging and it is more difficult than it should be.  Hopefully this passes quickly.

Slept in until 7:30 - WahOO!  Unfortunately I had late night meetings so I did not get in bed until midnight.    Met Paula and it was slushy, slick and messy.   Pretty sore from yesterdays massage, but really starting to feel better - minus my foot.   Technically challenged again so no pace and miles are approx.

Met the BBK's for a Christmas Eve run.  It was chilly but fun.   My right IT bothered me a little bit during the warm up but I stretched before we started the workout and was fine the rest of the time.   Afterwards we had a little Christmas party courtesy of Cheris & Michelle - Thanks!

Five miles on Christmas afternoon with Paula.  Way to much traffic!  It was very nice to get out.

Met some of the BBK's for an early morning run.   It was a great route planned by Mike but I was struggling.  I was always trying to catch up - they would come and get me and then I would fall behind again.    Another sign that I still have a lot of work to do to get back were I was pre injury.

Six miles with Paula this morning.  It was colder than expected due to the humidity.  Felt really good other than the right IT started bothering me with about 2 miles left.

Nine miles with the BBK's.  Today was slower than I expected so I was able to keep up which was nice for a change.   I would like to think I was improving but the pace does not lie.

Four miles with Paula and a lot of snow.   We were very slow even though the effort seemed more difficult.
