Good run.  We went a 1/2 hr early so I was a little tired.  My stomach is still upset from Thanksgiving.

Welcome to the blog!

Hey, your daughter is named Libby! There aren't that many of us out there. Welcome to the blog. How long have you been running?

From Jody on Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 11:13:12

Thanks - I have been running off and on for the last 8 yrs. The last 3 have been much more consistent. My sister suggested a 5K and we were hooked.

From Lybi on Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 11:22:22

You mean you didn't want to run (walk) screaming down the street after your first 5K? *Chuckle* That's how I felt, but I was really under trained.

From jody on Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 12:14:09

Lybi - My first 5k was not great but I knew I could do better. That is what keeps me going - the fact that I know that I can always improve. I have had my share of bad races but I am always trying to figure out what I did wrong and how to fix it.

From marciej on Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 17:11:26

Hey Jody,

I am so glad you joined the blog! Now I can keep in touch with you better, now if we can get andee to join. It was so fun to see you all over thanksgiving. I wish you were all coming down for christmas. Good job on your run today!!

Today I worked on overcoming my fear of wind, especially running in the wind.  The first two miles were uphill in the wind - not fun, but the rest was great.

Way to push through the wind, I know you dont like it. You have gotten in some good miles so far this week. Im impressed:)

From andee on Tue, Nov 27, 2007 at 10:35:16

WOW! I'm impressed. I heard the wind and was glad I was warm in bed! I need to take a lesson from you and Marcie and run every day no matter what! Have a good one.

Hey, a bunch of us are running the Canyonlands Half Marathon this year in Moab on March 8th. Is that something you'd be interested in running?

I was excited to run today because it had snowed yesterday.  I love to run after it snows.  My running partner canceled so I stayed close to home and ran a loop through my neighborhood 4 times.  It was a little icy so I had to take it slow at first but by the las lap I was able to run at race pace.

From marciej on Wed, Nov 28, 2007 at 09:57:43

good job Jody, It always seems so sereen (spell?) and peaceful after it snows (not that Im around it much, but when we get our one time a year down here) Wait to go on pushing the last mile.

Welcome to the blog! Always great to have more chics onboard! Cute picture! You're tough running through the winter in WVC! (I'm in St. George)You should come run the marathon down here next year with us bloggers!

From Lybi on Wed, Nov 28, 2007 at 10:46:00

I second that, Jody. If you can't make it to Moab for the half, you must definitely come to the St. George Marathon. That race is just riddled with Fast Running Bloggers.

Today was slow. I ran with Paula and we spent to much time chatting and not enough energy going fast. Glad I went and really thankful for hot showers!

It looks like we will be in St. George through next Tuesday.  I am excited to run in some warmer weather and my runs are always better in the south.

What! I didnt know you were coming down. What for? Im excited!!!

From Kim on Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 16:53:57

That is funny because today I almost mentioned the grateful for hot showers thing! While I was in the shower I seriously was thinking I am grateful that when I turn that little knob that it is hooked up to a water heater that will instantly give me warm water!

From Christi on Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 17:54:50

You should hook up with me while you're in St. George! I'll be running tomorrow (Fri.) and Sat. with a couple girls. Our average pace is anywhere from 9:30-10 min. miles depending on the day (maybe too slow for you, I won't be offended). It would be great to meet you!

From Christi on Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 17:55:27

Oh yeah, and we'll be going 6 miles Friday and probably at least that much, maybe 8 on Sat.

From jody on Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 19:59:10

Christi - Thanks for the invite, Saturday would be great ( I am coming tomorrow ) Let me know.

Thanks.

From Christi on Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 21:05:02

There's a group of us that meets in the Gold's gym parking lot (by the Red Cliffs Mall- the only Gold's in town) at 6am on Saturdays. Usually run for at least an hour, sometimes 1.5 hr. Most of the girls are a bit faster than me (all BQ qualifiers) so its my weekly "keep me on my toes" run. It would be GREAT to have you join us!!! Let me know!

From jody on Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 22:11:49

Christi,

I should be there. I am excited. Is the Gold's gym east of the mall?

From Bethany on Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 23:16:56

From Christi on Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 09:08:58

Today is a big fat 0.  No run today.  Here are my Top 10 reasons (excuses) for no run:

10. I already have some good mileage for the week

9.   My back has a lot of stress and is very sore

8.  I am driving to St. George today so I need some extra rest

7.  I stayed up to late last night working

6.  A diet of Diet Coke, Doritos and Jelly Beans does not produce good running

5.  I am running longer tomorrow, so I need some extra rest

4.  I have a sore throat

3.  I hate the treadmill

2.  My husband and son have already left for St. George and so I have no one to watch my girls why I run today

1.  I am just lazy... not a very good excuse!!!

Happy running!!

Great list!!!! I hope you have a good time in St. George - I'm jealous.

From Christi on Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 11:27:04

Those all sound like GREAT reasons to me (hee hee). I think we are going to get along just fine!! As far as running in the rain tomorrow goes- I will plan on meeting at the gym for sure at 6 unless its a REALLY heavy rain. I don't mind running in some light rain, but I'll avoid the downpour, lightning, etc...So I guess we'll kinda have to play it by ear. Drive safe! And hopefully you got my cell # that I "privately" emailed you?

From Christi on Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 23:38:37

Hey! Don't know if you're checking the blog while in St. George- but all this rain is making me want to sleep in tomorrow. But if its not pouring in the morning I WILL be at the gym!

From Christi on Sat, Dec 01, 2007 at 09:48:48

Great run today! It was really fun meeting you! I couldn't resist the urge to drive the run afterwards. It was 5.4 (I had to drive around the park- where we ran up the rocks- so I actually clocked a little longer, but then subtracted a little since I had to drive around the park) I think 5.4 is pretty accurate, that would give us 10:11 pace which I think is great considering we had GREAT conversation and ran up Foremaster!! Enjoy your time in St. George and hopefully it'll stop raining later today so you can enjoy the SG sunshine!

From Christi on Sat, Dec 01, 2007 at 09:56:33

Guess who- sick of me yet? I just saw your 1/2 marathon PR- it rocks! My best is 1:59 and 1:50 is my GOLD goal for one. You are already there- an inspiration!

From andee on Sat, Dec 01, 2007 at 13:11:09

It sounds like you had a good run this morning. You wouldn't believe the snow here. You'll have to call and let me know how things are going. Matt is at Target buying the boys snow boots and a sled - Briggs is dying to get outside - can't you just see him??? Talk to you soon.

I had a great run today with Christi.  It was a little rainy but as long as there is not wind I am good to go.

Christi is a great runner and we had a good time getting to know each other.  Hopefully we will be able to get together and get a couple of runs in over the holidays.

I will be able to run a couple of more times in St. George in before heading back up to the land of ice and snow, so life is good!!

Hey, did you have fun shopping with mom? If you're at her house maybe you could fix my picture. We got a ton of snow. Matt and the boys have been out sledding and playing all afternoon. I stayed inside and got 3 rooms cleaned, so I'm considering my day a success!

From Jody on Sat, Dec 01, 2007 at 20:34:59

I will get the picture fixed right now. Shopping was ............. We accomplished what we needed to. I am now poor and kids are happy. Mom and Grandma are tired and eating Burger Bar shakes (does this let you know how it went)! Way to clean - you can go work on my house if you like?!?

I had a good run today.  I headed out early and was enjoying the stars (we miss these often in the city) and the peace and quiet.  Unfortunatly it was very dark.   There were several time I could not tell where the trail was and would have to stop and a few times that I tripped over curbs.  Depsite these obstacles I managed to stay upright the entire time.  I was a little worried that I would fall and have to hobble back home.  I ave. a 9 min mile which is great, especially with my stops.

Hope you all had a great weekend and Happy Running!

From Christi on Mon, Dec 03, 2007 at 22:28:54

Now I know you were just taking it easy on me Saturday! You speedy one! Great job today- sounds like you're ready to do the Moab 1/2 w/ us in March! My question is the same as everyone else- did you do that 9 miles alone?

From Jody on Mon, Dec 03, 2007 at 23:57:24

Yes, I was by myself. I always get a little scared heading out alone but it is another fear I need to work on.

I always try to come up with a "safe" route but I do not think that there is one. Just what I feel the most comfortable with.

From MIchelle on Tue, Dec 04, 2007 at 09:24:09

Just looked at your blog, you have some very good race times and you are a morning runner like me and the "dark horse". The mornings are fantastic most of the year. We ran Hobble Creek last year also. I expect that you will be earning many commando points over the next few months.

I had my last run in southern Utah today.  I went out a little later than normal and I had forgotten what it was like to run in daylight.  I had one near miss with a car ( this is my first "almost accident" that was my fault ).

As I was finishing my run back to my in-laws I had amazing views of both Pine Valley mountain and Kolob.  The snow dusting was beautiful and I was so grateful for the opportunity I have had to be with family over the past few days.  I am so grateful for loving families and the values and heritage they have passed on to me and my family.

Back to the northern Utah cold and ice, tomorrow will be interesting.

Happy Running!

Today was the hardest run I have had in a long time. The only underarmor that was clean was the "heavy duty".  I usually only wear it when in gets into the low 20's or teens.  I  struggled trying to figure out what to wear with it so that I would not overheat at the end.  I ended up okay with a long sleeve T and froze in the beginning and was fine by the end.

I struggled getting my legs working right the first mile and a half.  I finally just decided I better run fast so that I could be done.  The next 2 1/2 miles are a gradual incline so I pushed as hard as I could with out going to far ahead of my running partner and then we finally had the down hill finish.  I am grateful for Brent's "ROOLS".  I just kept thinking pick up the pace.  I am not sure what our pace was because we had several stop lights.

By the time we were done I was glad that I went, but I hope tomorrow is easier.

Happy Running!

Sounds like it ended up being a nice run! I have been going to buy me some underarmor and am not sure what to get. Do you have any suggestions? Do you wear it top and bottom? It seems like guess work every day this time of year that I head out what to put on!

From andee on Wed, Dec 05, 2007 at 10:10:00

Good run! I thought about Brent's "ROOLS" this morning as we run up our famous 2nd mile hill. I just kept my mouth shut and mind elsewhere so I couldn't complain. Dr. Barrett is having us take Stockton to a pediatric cardiologist to have an ultrasound of his heart. I guess his slight murmer is getting louder. He says it's nothing to worry about, but you know me, and as a mom is just makes me a little nervous. Maybe we'll end up with one of the doctors you work with?? Have a wonderful day!

From James on Wed, Dec 05, 2007 at 10:14:42

Hard runs are the best! Good job at pushing the pace, but not laying your buddy out to dry.

From Jody on Wed, Dec 05, 2007 at 11:55:40

Michelle,

I just buy the tops. They have different weights. I usually buy the medium and heavy. I wear the medium weight the most and top with a long sleeve T or fleece depending on the weather. I buy the knock of brands that they sell at Shopko or Target.

Andee, I am sorry to hear about Stockton. When is your appointment and who are you seeing up at PCMC?

From laura on Wed, Dec 05, 2007 at 12:59:53

Thanks for your encouragement, Jody!! Hopefully my bad day yesterday didn't jinx your bad day today. ;o)

From andee on Wed, Dec 05, 2007 at 13:34:24

I haven't called yet on Stockton, Dr. Barrett just gave me a number to call. I'll let you know once I make the appointment. I have no clue how to e-mail you the picture (I know, sad but true). I'll have to have Matt do that when he has a minute. I just got home from Christmas shopping and the boys are totally done - yahoo!!!! I bought me a pair of pants and can't decide if I should wrap them for Christmas or just wear them now?

From Christi on Wed, Dec 05, 2007 at 14:07:26

Today was fantastic!!  It was not what we had planned.  We were going to go 10 miles but we were derailed by the weather.  We decided to just head out and see what we could do.  The first 2 miles were a little rough, getting out of our neighborhood.  Once we made it to the main roads it wasn't to bad except for puddles and being sprayed with slush by passing cars. Due to the fact that we could not break an speed records, we took this opportunity to really catch up and chat,  practice our ice skating,  work on our acrobatic moves as we dodged puddles and big piles of snow.  It has been a long time since I have had a run that was just pure joy,  I am usually thinking of go faster, work on your form and may other essential but not fun things.

I am grateful today for a running partner who will go out  whenever and is game to try anything.  She is the best.  I cannot believe that I am also going to say that I am grateful for snow, becuase without it today would have been just another run.

Happy Running!

Running Partners are the best. They make running worth it, You make me laugh with the description of your run, it sounded like one of those you can look back on and say"rememeber when we....and laugh." Cheri and I have had many of those moments throughout the years and we still laugh so hard when we bring them up! Have a great day Jody and tell your family hi from Garrett and I.

From andee on Sat, Dec 08, 2007 at 16:17:29

From Stacy on Sat, Dec 08, 2007 at 19:55:21

Today was interesting.  We spent most of our time dodging cars or trying to run through 6 inches of icy snow.  I ran 5.25 with my partner and then dropped her off and added on 2 more.  My average pace for the day was 9.7 min/miles.  Slow, but considering the how many times we were off the sidewalk and then back on, not to bad.  Overall a good run today!

What can I say, it gets more exciting everyday. Today we battled ice (only 2 slips), the obstacle course containing sidewalks that have not be shovled, but have been walked on and iced over, and low limb branches ( 2 to the face). Fortunately, I do not have any injurys that reflect the trecherous(sp?) conditions that we ran in today, just a sore knee and ankle. I have only myself to blame today because I picked the route. Tomorrow, Paula picks.

Happy Running!

I should have taken todays run as an omen for the rest of the day.  I went to drop the kids off at school and my three year old would not put on shoes or a jacket.  We left in a rush.  I got them dropped off at school and headed to work.  When I got to work the parking lot was almost full.  I drive a big crew cab truck with a long bed, so I can't just park anywhere.  I have to park in the back and reverse into the spot.  The back was all full except next to the dumpster.  It took me literally 20 min of reverse, drive, reverse, drive, reverse, drive to get it parked.  I finally got out and went to get my laptop and OOPS! it was back home.  I almost cried.  I got back in and started the 30 min drive back home.  Got my computer and headed back across the valley.  I finally arrived and my parking spot next to the dumpster was taken ( I almost died).   I was panicked.   I finished pulling in the back and I found that while I was trekking across the city my boss, in his equally as big SUV, had left.  Hallelujah!!  I made it finally to work 1 1/2hrs late.

There were several more disasters today involving Quickbooks and printers - but I survived with out a paper cut!!

Now I will hopefully finishing my Christmas decorating, work and read Twilight ( I know - I am seriously behind).

There is a reason you have a treadmill... but I'm proud of you for braving the elements and getting out there. You are getting some great miles. Good job!

From Brent on Tue, Dec 11, 2007 at 11:47:27

Jody, I am with you on all the obstacles running outside right now. Thanks for your comments. 7.37 miles is some serious mileage for the conditions outside. By the way, maybe I have asked this, what is your next race? St.George marathon for you next year? Last note on running outside, it would be nice just to find one good mile with no ice, no low limbs, no crusty snow, no streets to crosso, etc. then just keep running back and forth the same mile. I have done that sort of thing several times in the winter rather than brave all the obstacles.

From Jody on Tue, Dec 11, 2007 at 13:44:06

Brent,

I would rather be outside that on a treadmill. I thought about the one street thing as I was getting home this morning. I wonder how many times I would have to run my street to get a mile - I might have to try it.

On the marathon, maybe - I am chicken. I feel like I am much more on track that I ever have before, but it is the fear. One I need to work on.

The blog has helped so far.

Thanks for the encouragement

Today was hard to get out.  It seems that like by Thursday the week catches up with you and everything is harder.  I want to know why when I left the house, I started with a side ache that lasted the entire time.  What is up with that?   Paula's dog had enough.  He was excited until he saw me coming down the street and then stopped and would not go any further.  He went home.  We continued and did 5 miles together.  The fitness center trails are icy but it was good.  I added 2 more on at the end to get to 7 for the day.  This is because of the blog!  I used to just rationalize why I would not meet my goals and the forget, but now because I have to see it in black and white,. I am much more disciplined.  THANKS!

Today I had to take my son down to a baseball camp at BYU.  I had planned on running while I was there (even mapped my route out in advance) and reading.  Some quality alone time.  I must have been really excited because, just like in school, I woke up an hour early.   I got dressed, woke my son up, checked the weather in Provo and went to go say good bye to my sleeping husband when I realized it was 6:00 am not 7:00 am.  Sent my son back to bed for 45 min and I went back to bed. We got up 45 min later and headed south.  It is amazing how much faster you can get to Provo when there is no traffic.  I dropped my son off at the indoor practice facility and head out for my run.

I struggled for the first 7 miles.  I could not get going!  I was getting mad and frustrated.  I am not sure what my problem was but I had a lot of time to think about it.  My possibilities were, in order of realistic possibility:

1.  I did not eat dinner last night because I was having severe GI issues.  Due to the lack of food and time spent dealing with my GI issues there was not enough fuel to run.

2.  I had to carry water because I did not get down early enough to drop any along the route.  To give you an idea of how cold it was - my sport cap froze up and ice was forming inside by the time I finished.

 3.  Due to my early wake up and sad attempt at going back to bed I did not get enough sleep.

I really think that option #1 did contribute to my difficult 7 miles.  I finally got in the grove and ended finishing with 11.5 miles.  I am going along with the notion that "ugly miles" are just as good as "pretty miles" and that I did get some sort of benefit.  Overall my ave pace was 9:39.  Slower than I would have liked but I am putting in the past and moving on to next week.  Hope you all have a good weekend!

 Happy Running!

Jody, great job on a tough day, winter time is full of ugly miles. But, an ugly mile is still great. I never met a person that I could not find something good about, same thing about and ugly mile as an ugly guy, always look at the good:

The mile is mental toughness

This mile will win me first in my age divsion, the others are sitting at home wimping about the weather.

This mile will earn me commando points

This mile will bring me new dreams

From Lybi on Sat, Dec 15, 2007 at 16:58:32

Well, that's poetic! Good job, Jody. I have no doubt that the lack of fueling last night affected you, as well as the lack of sleep and extreme coldness. But you did it! And I am impressed.

From marciej on Sat, Dec 15, 2007 at 18:04:07

I agree with the above, that winter is always full of ugly miles (as well as summer, spring, fall-just more in the winter)! GI issues contibute alot to uncomfortable runs. I have had lots of those!! But the runs that are mentally tough are the ones that form great runners, when you can mentally push through not feeling physically good you become so much stronger and it will make every run that much easier. I have learned that over the years. Good job on pushing on and not quitting what you had planned to do! You are awesome!

From Jody on Sat, Dec 15, 2007 at 20:52:21

Thanks all for the encouragement! You are all so great! I have learned so much from the blog, especially the three of you! Thanks again!

From adam on Sat, Dec 15, 2007 at 21:34:50

I think I may have seen you out there today. I was just starting my run from the field house, probably about the time when you were finishing. It was really cold when I started, so way to go on finishing out your run! A few months from now you'll be on mile 10 or 11 training thinking, "what's one more mile? I can do that in the winter cold and without fuel!".

From Christi on Sun, Dec 16, 2007 at 00:28:45

Nice weekly mileage! Your run today reminded me of a funny term (I think Lybi coined) "junk" miles. Not that I think your run was junk, it was awesome!!! But the way you felt about it reminded me of Lybi referring to her run as "junk" miles. I think you ROCK!!Unfortunately we can't expect every run to feel good. Hope you're back to eating normal today, no more GI issues!

From Michelle on Sun, Dec 16, 2007 at 21:24:33

Wow! I'm totally impressed by your mileage today, exspecially since you struggled for the first seven. I'm guessing I would have called it a day by then for sure! I'll put that in a mental file on toughness somewhere and remeber that I can't quite because there is still time to find my groove after seven!!! Way to keep going! 11 plus miles is a good job any day!!

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Dec 24, 2007 at 16:40:35

Ugly miles build your aerobic fitness just as well as pretty miles. In some cases even better. I really do not like running on ice, snow, in a hailstorm, or into a wind because it takes more mental effort to go a slower pace. But it helps a lot with leg power and mental toughness. If you train your mind to not get bothered with adverse conditions in training, you will have competitive advantage in those conditions in a race.

Today was a good run. We headed out on a pretty flat course and Paula took off. She was going! I tried to keep her in my sight, but it was about 3 miles in before I came close to catching up with here. When I got close enough, I could see that she was dragging her dog along, even he could not keep up. The rest of the run went well, she let me catch up and we finished strong.

We finished up coming on a road that when I began running was the death of me. I would avoid it at all costs. (It has a teeny, tiny hill). As I ran up it, I realized how far I have come over the past years and sometimes it takes a while to see the improvements but that they are there all along.

Off to a Monday filled with meetings, Christmas shopping and gift delivering!

Happy Running!

Just a funny thought:  My husband was taking my son to school today because he had a project due, and he asked what the weather was like.  I answered:  "Oh, its warm, it is 26 degrees."

I did, however have to walk for a little later in the run! So you're delivering gifts- neighbor gifts? What are you doing? (I always like to steal people's ideas for future holidays- LOL!)

From Jody on Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 19:30:53

Christi,

Bummer about Moab! Maybe you guys can come up and run the Salt Lake City half in April.

My neighbor gifts are kinda cheesy. I bought the stars at Krumpets in Santa Clara that say "BELIVE in the Magic" I added some ribbon and candy canes. I went for easy this year.

Do you have any good ideas for next year? I am always looking.

From Michelle on Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 20:29:34

Nice run today! I too tend to over look the little imporvements and it's good to be reminded as I think back about the hills and roads that I have avoided at all cost too! Thanks for the positive look at things!!! So tell me about the SLC half? When in April and what's the coarse like and where does it go? I am familiar with SLC but not enough to know the details of specific areas!

From Christi on Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 20:49:41

I'll have to check out the SLC 1/2 in April. I'll go where the blog girls go! But I vote for Hurricane 1/2 in May (I've ran it a couple times and really like it) Anyway- Jody- I LOVE Krummets! Thats so funny because I bought the same stars except they were medal can came in "believe", "joy", "noel", "wish" and gave w/ some chocolates. But I'm so indecisive that I also handed out 2 other kind of neighbor gifts- a cookie mix and rolls of gift wrap... nothing new and all EASY!

From Jody on Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 21:11:38

Michelle & Christi,

The Salt Lake Half starts up at the U under the big white bridge. You head down to Foothill and then about 13th south head west. You weave in and out of neighborhoods including old Sugarhouse. You go through Liberty Park and then head over to the Gateway. It is downhill in the beginning and then flat. It isn't to bad. I am planning on running it again this year and I think that Paula will as well. When is the Hurricane Half? I heard the course is a little hard?

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

We ran my favorite route today, up through the golf course. The first 3.5 miles are up hill. You have to cross a sky bridge at 3 miles, and this is at about the peak of the hills.  For 3 yrs I keep thinking, when you get to the center of the bridge you can do your "Rocky" dance.  I am pretty gutless so of course it hasn't happened, but I think about all the way up the hill.  At mile 4 you loop around the golf course and come out to see the the Salt Lake Valley and up into Davis county with the lights all lit up. When it is lighter outside you can see the Great Salt Lake. You have about 1/4 a mile of the view and it is just breathtaking. The wind picked up a little from mile 2 to mile 5 but it was a great run.  Just Perfect!

Happy Running!

Again another no run on Friday.  I had to be to work today at 7:00 am.  All I can say is I am very thankful for 4 wheel drive!!

I pulled a muscle in my back yesterday at work.  How? I have no idea!!  I sit a desk all day and if I get really ambitious I might go downstairs to the mail room.  However yesterday there was a break in the routine.  I had to scan and email payroll out to one of our clients (2 hr process, 70 individual packets).  This is normally something we have our AA take care of but it is a disaster every time.  So I thought I would do it to save time on the back end!  Somehow in all my standing I have pulled a muscle - What is up with that! I just hope it better quickly (NOW!) because tomorrow I want to run.

Enough of my complaining!  I hope you all have a great weekend and travel safely if you are out and about.

I am not sure about later today - It will probably work - I call later. No football last night. Shopping, work & reading. I stayed up way to late because I knew I would not be running today.

You can get to 20 easy, you have 2 days to get it done!

From marciej on Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 19:39:08

Hey I am sorry about your back, that is no fun. I feel that way sometimes from sitting all day and bending in awkward postions to see in peoples mouths. Have Dusty give you a massage when they come to see you guys...now thats a good idea!!!

From Jody on Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 21:55:19

Marcie,

I hinted, but it did no good! Hopefully, I will survive tomorrow.

Let me start by saying I am glad we went today.   It was rough!!  Too much ice, snow & unshoveled sidewalks.  At about 8 miles we ended up changing our route to allow us to run more in the road.  It was still icy.  I am a little concerned about Monday's run.

My back started off worse than yesterday and I was very worried that I would not be able to finish.  It finally loosened up the last couple of miles.  Hopefully it will continue to feel better.

It was nice to have the sun out today, it has been a long time.  Overall glad we went, but do not want to repeat.

Happy Running!

Good for you to get out there considering the weather conditions. I was thinking about it, but I chickened out. Hope your back continues to do better. I'll be up later today with Christmas.

From Michelle on Sat, Dec 22, 2007 at 16:59:19

Thanks! It really was nice, but a little tired at the end, hope that I have 3 more in me for St. George! If the weather is good it will make all the difference too! A nice sunny day today really helped!!! You guys really inspire me a ton! The blog really helps knowing there are others out ther pushing through the runs too!!! Merry Christmas!!

I head out today and ran the .25 miles down to Paula's house. I decided it was way to windy for me. I asked Paula how she felt and she agreed. I ran the .25 miles back to my house, dug through all my winter running gear to find shorts and a T-shirt. I headed downstairs to the treadmill. It hasn't been used for quite a while, which was very apparent by the dust on it and the fact that I couldn't get it to turn on. I made sure it was plugged in and flipped the reset button a couple of times - and nothing. I took me about 5 mins before I remembered that you have to but the red emergency stop thingy in the slot for it to turn on...DUH!!!! Hopped on and got going. I remembered at about 2 mins in why I do not like the treadmill. I ended up doing some speed work which was very needed. Overall 5 quality miles. I will need to head back out or back on the treadmill (now that I can remember how to turn it on) to finish another 2 later in the day.

Happy Running & Merry Christmas!!

PM:  I planned on going down to the treadmill, but got down there and ran .19 miles (yes, I am giving myself credit) and remembered why I hate the treadmill.  Got off, changed into my  winter gear and called my husband to find out when he would be home from the store so I could head out.  He said "It is a blizzard out here, cars cannot stop."   I sulked, hung up the phone and changed my close yet again and went back down to the treadmill.   I got going and figured if I have changed my clothes 3 times and broken a sweat, I should make it worth my time.  At 4.3 miles my husband came down and put is cold hand on the back of my leg.  I almost fell and yelled back:  "I cannot go outside because I might get hurt, but you are going to make me fall on the treadmill!?!"  Finished at 5 miles and it is now time to go spend time with the family.

Thanks for all the support!!

I bet your treadmill was happy to be remembered! Good job with the speed work. I think I'm getting what my boys have had, tummy not feeling so great - no run for me today. How did your big party go yesterday?

From marciej on Mon, Dec 24, 2007 at 16:15:23

Dang wind! Hey at least you figured it out on your own,(the treadmill) I probably would have grabbed garrett and then he probably given me a bad time all day long:) Good job on getting some speed work in too, I have been slackin on that lately too. Wish you all were here, but have a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS and I am sure we will talk to you soon. p.s I am sorry the hinting did not help the other day (for your back)!

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Dec 24, 2007 at 16:34:17

Jody, and everyone still building base:

Check the list of top ten training mistakes. Speed work is never needed until your base is solid. When you have extra energy, run long rather than fast, until you cross the 40 miles per week barrier. After that, it depends on what distance is most important to you. If it is a 5 K, then do speed work. Otherwise, keep increasing the mileage, and add tempo runs.

From Paula on Mon, Dec 24, 2007 at 18:06:17

Good job. Now that my day is going I wish I would have suggested going to the fitness center and running together. Oh well Let me know when you go tomorrow maybe I can run with you.

Amazing job! Sorry I haven't called you yet- too hectic (but fun!) Looks like it would've been good for me to meet up with you this morning- would've burned off a few more cookies than I did alone! Great job today getting in all the miles! MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

From Lybi on Mon, Dec 24, 2007 at 22:46:20

Merry Christmas Jody! And congrats for showing that treadmill who is the boss. Treadmills can be dangerous, especially when husbands try to scare the heck out of you while you are on them. Be wary!

I headed out today to try out my Christmas gift -Nike+. My husband will buy anything that is made by either Nike or Apple, so for him it does not get any better than this. I was surprised, because it was not something I had ever mentioned wanting before. It was pretty easy to set up with my Nano and I got going really easy. The instructions state you can calibrate it but it is not always necessary. I thought I would see how it would go. I need to calibrate!! It says that I went 7.94 miles with a pace of 7:40 (not possible). I am going off my traditional mapping method instead and only giving myself 6.76 miles :( I wanted to run 7 but fell just short. I am happy however with my avereage pace 8.93 miles. I would probably almost consider this a tempo run. It is a beautiful day with the sun shinning! Enjoy the day!

Happy Running!

Headed back out to calibrate my new toy.  It said it was successful, but I have my doubts.  You are supposed to run nice and even but I ended up jumping a few puddles because my shoes from this morning are still wet and I only have one pair of back ups.  We will see, I might have to head to a track.

Hope you all had a wonderful holiday!

Your mom told me you got the Nike+. That will be cool for you to have, I dont know much about them but heard they are pretty cool! Thank you so much for the "office" season, we are so excited to watch them. I almost bought one of the seasons last week. Good job on getting out on Christmas!

P.S. I am glad I am not the only one that does not follow the rules:)

From Michelle on Tue, Dec 25, 2007 at 18:03:39

Way to go getting out today!! I might still get out? I run with the Nike/ipod thing too. I really like it. I re-calibrate mine occasionally and think that it does a pretty good job! Hope you've had a wonderful day, Merry Christmas!

It is cold and windy this morning!! We head out and had 3.5 miles into the wind and up hill, we then turned around and had a really easy rest of the way home.

I got my Nike+ipod calibrated and it worked great!! It is pretty close to 100%. If any thing it is a little short. We aver. 9:07 pace. Not to bad!

Happy Running!

Normally, Thursdays are my hardest days of the week. I am tired and run down and exhausted both physically and mentally. I woke up today ready to go. I was shocked! We headed out and there was not even a breeze. I cannot remember when the last time the air was still. I was shocked again! We had a good run. We ran the same route that I ran on Tuesday. I had distance issues again with the Nike+ and this time it was short. I still counted what it said, but I have figured out where it gets off on this route. There are a couple of large water towers and I am not sure if they mess up the signal or what. But both times the differences came began around the same spot.

I also realized today, how much time we waste at stop lights. Total running time was 1 hr 2 min. From the time I left my house and came back was almost 1 hr 10 min.

Ave Pace 8:54

I spoke to my husband about the distance thing and he said that it was probably user error.  He is probably right.

Happy Running!

Jody, great dedication. Is 2008 going to be the year for that marathon? Have you thought about running the striders series in prepartion for the Ogden marathon, twist the arm of your training partner?

bye bye B of BS Rools

From Jody on Thu, Dec 27, 2007 at 20:41:32

Brent,

I think 2008 just might be the marathon year. I really would like to run St. George - but after seeing everyone lose out on Moab I am a little nervous. I am also thinking about the Deseret News so that I can support my husband - and I can run for free.

I do not know much about the Strider series - where can I find out more info?

Thanks for all the support!

Jody, check it out, 2008 winter running series. There are going to be several bloggers running the races. The striders half marathon, Lybi is coming to run is part of the series. You get a cheaper rate if you sign up early. You can do it!

User error- too funny. Sounds like something my hubby would say. I have this new Garmin, unfortunately it doesn't work itself!! You mean I have to figure it out?! Ha ha.. EXCELLENT job on another 7 miles today!!!

From Michelle on Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 01:52:02

I think that there is no way that it is "user" error, if you would have been blogging when I first got mine you would have seen that it took me five miles to even calitbrate the darn thing correctly and that was NOT "user" error...well maybe?

You are totally a trooper, way to set the bar for me day after day!! Oh and I don't envy all those darn stop lights and things you deal with daily, some one could really get hurt if they are not paying attention! Luckily you must be used to that by now! (he,he!!)

We headed out today in the wind. Our first mile was uphill in the wind, enough to make us both question if we should do this. Once we got out and going east/west it was not as bad. Paula was not feeling well so her husband came and picked her up at mile 6. I finished running the 2.2 home and then added on enough on the treadmill to equal 10 miles.

I am so tired of complaining about the weather but it just is not getting any better. Please on behalf of all runners - No more wind, rain, snow or ice.

I totally agree about the weather... I think we should ring in the new year with an early spring!!! (spring without wind too, that is terrible in the spring here!) But you always seem to push through and it doesn't slow you down or stop you, Great Job!!! Enjoy your day off tomorrow!!!

Today was the first day in a really long time that I have not wanted to run. I am so tired of the bad weather, it is sucking the life out of me. I knew that I would be glad that I ran and if I did not go, I would regret it the rest of the day. So, I got out of bed. The first mile and last mile were slow, to much ice and snow. The rest, however, was a pretty good run.
