10.0 on the TM.  I really wanted to meet up with Allie and the others this morning, but I just couldn't bring myself to run outside when it was about 5 degrees.  The LC is closed, so my brother got me into the gym down at the hospital.  Pretty good run for me.  I was skeptical I would make it 10 miles, but it went by fast.

Lifted for about 25 min.

A quick summary of my 2010 running year.  All in all, it was kind of a disappointing one as far as hitting my goal times, but oh well.  I think the times will eventually come if I keep putting in the work. I had high aspirations for TOU and actually probably ran the best 18 consecutive miles of my life.....and then the wheels fell off.  But I learned a lot.  DesNews Marathon was fun for a little while, but I really have no desire to run that race again.  But I also learned from that race.  I think I let the marathon and the half marathon get the best of me mentally this last year.  I think I will switch up my training a bit this coming year and really try to incorporate a bit more speed "stuff" and tempo miles.  As of now, I have one marathon on the schedule for 2011 (Boston).  If I don't get into St. George, I may not do another marathon during the year.  I also am entered in the half marathon at Utah Valley.  I will obviously sign up for many other races as the year gets going.  Would love to do more 5ks and 10ks to help develop some more speed.  I think it will be a good year.......and hopefully I will avoid any injuries unlike the last 2 years where I've missed about 2 good, solid months of running in each year.

HAPPY NEW YEAR, Jeff!!!

You had a great 2010 race year despite the injuries being sidelined for 2 months.

Here's to a FANTASTIC 2011~~~***!!!

Total Distance

6.25 easy miles on the TM.  Avg pace was probably right around 7:50.  Perfect for what I wanted today.  Looking forward to getting back into the swing of things.

Thanks. I feel real bad about not showing up on Saturday morning after reading your's and Rob's blogs. You have good reason to never invite me again.

From allie on Mon, Jan 03, 2011 at 23:41:42 from 174.23.238.75

no worries. it was way cold -- as in, i never want to run in those temperatures again.

and you are definitely invited to all runs in the future. as soon as it warms up a bit, we are going to try for another FRB run.

Total Distance
6.75

6.75 at the gym.  6x800 with 400 rest.  Warmed up with 1 mile and then did the first two 800s on the track at the LC.  My watch told me both were right around 3:10, but that felt too easy.  My guess is that they were both a bit short.  A TM opened up and I did the next 4 800s there.  I did all of them at 6:35 pace and my rests were around 9:00 pace.  Ideally I would do these 800s at 10k pace, which should be around 6:10s or so, but I'm just getting started.  I will drop the times as I progress over the next few weeks.

6.50 in around 50 min on the TM.  Could be a rough week.  I'm in Bozeman today/tomorrow and then I go to Reno on Thursday/Friday.  I'm going to have to work to get the miles in this week, but I will do it.

PM 3.0 on the TM in about 24 min and lifted for 20 min.  I'm feeling heavy and out of shape so I'm going to try and mix in some extra lifting and I really need to get my miles up to 55-65 per week.

We got our flights booked. We're flying out on a Delta red eye arriving on Sat mid morning, giving us plenty time to do the expo and party around Boston Commons the rest of the day. We'll probably go to church Sun morning, have dim sum in China town and meet up with FRBs for carb load dinner in Little Italy, then hit the sack early. Our hotel is really close to the bus and finish. Gonna be lot of fun! :)

15.25 on the TM.  The thought of running long on the TM sounded miserable, but it actually went by pretty fast today.  Was hoping to run outside with Mark, but the wind was blowing pretty hard.  Ran 1 hr on one TM, but the mileage setting was messed up.  I'll play it conservative and say I went 7.50.  Then I switched TMs and ran 7.75 more on a different TM.  Glad I'm done.

19.20

19.10 in 2:33:34 (8:02).  Not the fastest run this morning, but I wanted the mileage more than anything.  I'm feeling very under trained for Boston, which is not that far away.  It is looking more and more like Boston will be a glorified long run for me, which is fine. Started out this morning at 5:30ish.  Ran Pioneer Crossing over into A.F. and then hit the old Alpine Highway.  Went up into Highland/Alpine and then hit the main road up by Kohlers that takes you out to the freeway. I did a lot of meandering around to add mileage.  Eventually made it to the Smiths Mktplace and stopped to fuel up.  Headed on back home via 300 West and Center St.  Actually held up really well, and it helped to take things easy for most of the run.  Miles 14 to the end were all in the 7:30s or low 7:40s, which I was pleasantly surprised about.  This is my longest run in quite some time.

Hoping to lift a bit later on.

This is the last long run before Boston.  I will take things a bit easier this week, but Boston will not even be close to an all out effort for me.  More of a glorified long run and hopefully I'll be able to just enjoy the experience and come in right around the 3:30 mark.

Saturday - Leave in the morning and fly directly to Boston

Sunday - Baseball game and expo

Monday - Marathon

Tuesday - Freedom Trail and Celtics/Knicks playoff game

This race was awesome and exceeded all my expectations.  I would highly recommend it to anybody that is thinking of coming to run it.  It was freezing cold for the few hours that we (Mark and I) waited at the athletes village before the race started, but it warmed up very quickly.  In fact, I got me a good sun burn on the right side of my body.

The plan was to take it easy, mainly because I wanted to enjoy things, but also because I wasn't in good enough shape to run it all out.  I stuck to the plan extremely well and never felt out of my comfort zone.  Walked through all the water stations, and really just enjoyed things.

Here are my 5k splits according to the Boston website.

5K 23:17  10K 46:56  15K 1:10:59  20K 1:34:39  Half 1:39:45 (perfect)  25K 1:58:22  30K 2:22:41  35K 2:47:16 40K 3:11:15

7:43 overall pace

Splits from my watch: 7:24, 7:18, 7:35, 7:33, 7:33, 7:28, 7:24, 7:35, 8:00 (bathroom stop), 7:31, 7:36, 7:32, 7:29, 7:36, 7:37, 7:26, 7:49, 7:43, 7:40, 7:49, 8:05, 7:29, 7:29, 7:51, 7:36, 8:00, 3:48.  I obviously measured the course long at 26.53, but I was happy that I ran the second half only about 2:30 slower than the first half, and my splits were very even throughout.

Started off in corral 3 and realized that all the people around me were planning on running a lot faster than me. Wellesley and everything from about Boston College (mile 20ish) to the end were probably some of the best running moments of my life.  It was so awesome and exhilirating.  In fact, all the guys I was running with for the half mile leading up to Wellesley were commenting on how cool this part of the race is, and it lived up to it.  It's so cool to hear the yells beforehand and then once you leave you can hear them for a bit.  I realized that despite the fact that I was running pretty easily, it is still hard to run 26.2 miles and my legs started feeling it around the Newton Hills.  Despite the fact that the hills were tough, I think I was in better shape than most of the other people I was around.  Mark caught up to me around mile 16 or so and we ran together for a bit, but then I pulled ahead.  I've never been able to run all the way through a marathon until this one, but it was just so awesome that I couldn't stop.  Just tried to really enjoy things up through the finish line.  Great experience and glad I did it.

Really hope to build off of this and train pretty diligently for the UVM half.  Maybe with some focused work on the half I will be able to pull something great off.

AWESOME run, Jeff!!! GREAT JOB on the speedwork and feeling good! Looks like you are fully recovered and ready to roll again! Are you running Ogden?

Hey Smooth. No, no Ogden for me. I'm running the Provo 1/2 this Saturday and UVM 1/2. No marathons planned right now unless I get into St. George. You doing Ogden?

I am running Ogden and UVM. Yep, doing the Grand Slam again this year.

Race: Provo City Half Marathon (13.1 Miles) 01:31:11
Total Distance
16.40

Good workout today on one of the tougher half marathon courses I've run around here. I was hoping to get 13 miles in at 6:30-6:45 pace, but I learned that I'm not quite ready for that. I don't feel race ready and this was a reminder that I need to get training harder.  But despite the fact it wasn't what I was hoping for, I still got in a lot better workout than if I did not run the race.  Splits:

1               6:31

2               6:37     13:08  Feeling descent and settling into things. Right where I want to be   with my pace.

3               6:25     19:33  Looking at my cumulative time, I should be able to throw down a 5k time way under 19 min sometime in the near future.

4-5            13:11   32:45  Still right on pace and all the runners all strung out now.  Still feeling okay, but starting to feel a bit uncomfortable and doubting I can hold this pace the rest of the race.

6               6:36      39:31  We are heading out towards the lake and this is really where I'm doubting myself now.  Although, I'm still on pace and keeping strong.

7-10          28:09    1:07:31  We cross over the half way mark and this is where I stop at the water table and walk while I take in water.  We are on the trail now and I'm trailing a couple of older guys.  Stop for a bathroom break and to walk a bit and mentally I'm done.

11-13.1     23:40    1:31:11  A little more walking in here, but I don't walk the last hill that's a beast.

So, overall I guess I got in a good workout.  It's weird that I actually felt a lot better during the marathon a few weeks ago than I did today.  But like I mentioned before, this was definitely slower than I was expecting (really was expecting between 1:26-1:29ish), but I got a really good workout in and this is good motivation to get training better.

This was a good mileage week for me and I need to build off of this.  I feel a bit heavier than I should and hopefully I can continue to get my miles a bit higher.  The plan is to really get ready for UVM half in a bit over a month and hopefully I can bring that time down into the 1:25 or lower range.

1-2:   13:18                I wanted to start off slow, but I started slower than I should have.  Wish I would have went out harder at the beginning.

3:         6:49     20:08  First big hill.  I feel good and smooth though.  At this point in time I'm running with another guy and girl.

4:         6:25     26:33  Still with same people and now things are really spread out.  Between here and mile 7 were the most enjoyable of the race.  Got a good rythem and seemed to just glide.

5:         6:15     32:49  Our group of 3 has picked off 2 runners by now and we have a girl coming back to us.  There is another little climb in here somewhere.

6-7:    12:52    45:41  Right around here we come upon Mary Ann (??).  The 2 people I was with before had dropped back a bit.  The next closest person in front of us is about a good 2-3 min ahead of us.  I couldn't believe how big the gap was.  There is probably nobody coming back to us now.  M.A. says she is not having a good race, but we stick together for the next 3-4 miles. This helped.

9:          5:45    57:54  Right around here a guy passes us and he looks smooth.  Looks like he is not even trying and I think he must weigh 100 lbs (I hate people like that :))  He gaps us a bit.  Based off of this split and the next one, I'm pretty sure I hit my lap button a bit early here.

10-11: 13:58   1:11:53  I break away from M.A. here and slowly reel back in the lightweight and pass him.  Right around here another guy has passed me as well.  Last hill is in this section and now I'm starting to feel the fatigue.

12:        6:51   1:18:44  Right around here the lightweight passes me back as well as M.A. and the other guy I was running with in the middle miles.  I gave in a bit here.  Walked through the aid station.

13-.1:    7:03   1:25:47  Pull it together a little bit and end up finishing about 2 sec ahead of M.A.  A little disappointed in the last 2 miles or so, but I feel pretty good about things.

Good, fun race.  I got an excellent workout.  I wish I would have started out faster cause I just can't make up the time at the middle or end of the race.  But the good thing about racing is that I learn a lot and it builds the desire to get faster and stronger.  I probably need to race more cause it definitely puts me out of my comfort zone.  I stuck around and watched up until around the 3:20 marathoners came in.  I'm amazed at these guys that finish in 2:50 and below.

I'm going to go lift.

Total Distance

Extremely impressed with this race. I've never run down A.F. canyon, but this race has got to be close to Hobble Creek as far as how fast it is.

5:58, 6:13, 6:17, 6:10, 5:56, 5:59, 6:22, 6:20, 7:14 (bathroom stop), 6:41, 7:37 (I walked), 6:57, 7:11 (walked some more), 0:33.

Serious downhill coming out of the canyon.  Good news is that I ran an awesome 8 miles (49:17 split).  I was basically with Melanie B. and some of her crew right up until we got through part of Cedar Hills golf course.  Legs were shot and once I gave in and hit the bathroom stop during mile 9 my race was pretty much over.

I feel like I should be faster and that I'm doing something wrong with my training.  It almost feels like I've plateaued a bit and now I'm almost regressing from where I was last year and the year before.  I'm very mentally weak and feel like I just give in too easy.  A little bit frustrating.   However, I put in huge miles this week (for me anyways), and I could never simulate this kind of pace in a training run.  I'm hoping my quads recover from this and for some reason I'm having thoughts of doing DesNews marathon (I swore I would never do that race again last year)....but only if I can continue to put in 65-70 mile weeks for the next three weeks.  So, I guess this race could be a good simulator for that marathon.  I'll keep at it.

From JulieC on Sat, Jun 25, 2011 at 21:39:42 from 70.56.108.100

I think you ran well. I would try some easier long runs to give yourself more recovery--- I was recently told "there is no such thing as overtrained, just UNDER RECOVERED. It will all happen with taking things easy on some MLR. Oh and try throwing your watch out : D once in a while :D. YOU WERE STILL IN FRONT OF ME.

From allie on Sun, Jun 26, 2011 at 14:33:59 from 24.10.191.18

great job, jeff. check out those sub-6 splits! nice work.

in regards to your training, i would suggest throwing in a few more faster miles at the end of some of your runs -- maybe try running 1-3 miles at race pace a couple of times a week. this way your mind and your body will be more familiar and comfortable with the pace on race day.

hopefully it works out for you to run des news. i always swear off that race when i am running the last mile along 800 south, but there is just something about that race that is highly addicting. good luck with your training over the next few weeks.

Thanks, everyone. I appreciate the comments.

Allie-I'm sure I've asked you this before, but when you get a minute I would love your opinion on the best way to run DesNews since you probably know that course better than anyone. For example, if I run it I'm going to shoot to come in just under 3 hrs, but where would you suggest to try and hit the half? Do I try and fly down the steep downhill and then just hold on once out of the canyon? Would love your thoughts when you get a minute. Thanks.

From allie on Sun, Jun 26, 2011 at 22:43:25 from 24.10.191.18

jeff - as you know, des news is a tricky course, and can be very deceiving. the number #1 rule that i have for this race is to start slowly. it is very easy to fly down those steep hills in the first few miles, but there is a good chance that it will come back to bite you on foothill boulevard at mile 20. the last two years i have started the race very conservatively. i just tried to focus on running smoothly because i was very much keeping the brakes on in the first few miles and you don't necessarily want to brake too much because it can mess with your form. just try to run conservatively but still focus on keeping a smooth stride. i ran 6:05 and 6:06 for miles 2 and 3 in 2010 and 6:04 and 6:07 in 2009. my overall pace for those races was 6:35 - 6:40. this illustrates just how fast those miles are if i am feeling like i have the brakes on at 30 seconds per mile faster than race pace. everyone goes out fast and it's hard not to follow suit, but you have to remember that the more tearing you do to your quads in the first five miles, the more painful those last five miles are going to be. use the first few miles to warm up -- just relax and let everyone sprint by you. i'm telling you, most all of them will come back if you hold steady and be patient. the same thing seems to happen every year, even with very experienced runners. bill cobler once told me that "the race begins at the zoo" and i totally agree. if you can make it through those first 14-15 miles without destroying yourself, you will have the advantage. i went through the half in 1:25:47 in 2009 and 1:26:xx in 2010. even though i went through the half nearly a minute slower in 2010, i finished the race 2+ minutes faster, and i felt stronger at the end of the race in 2010. you have to save your legs for the little undulations on wasatch, followed by the (seemingly) flat portions of foothill (it's net downhill but it never feels that way). i would say that aiming for anything from a high 1:26 to a low 1:28 for the first half will give you a great shot for the sub-3.

it is not clear yet whether i will be able to run this year, but i haven't given up on the idea. if i can get in three decent weeks of mileage and go into the race confident that i won't re-break my leg, i will run it. if that is the case, i would love to start out with you and pace together for the first few miles. i will probably be running 3+ hours if i am able to run it at all, but i think we could help each other on those first few miles to keep the pace in check.

From Jeff L on Mon, Jun 27, 2011 at 20:56:26 from 74.81.227.108

Thanks, Allie. That was very helpful. If you do end up running I would love to run those first few miles together. I'll be in touch.

I've been in Heber City the last 3 days for a family reunion.  I was really hoping to get some big miles in during this time.  It would have been fun to run in a new place.  Unfortunately, my legs were still in bad shape from the race last weekend.  Finally, yesterday and today things felt better.  Feel like I'm getting a cold though.  Ate horribly.  Hoping to salvage the week with a long run tomorrow.

20.0 in 2:32:50 (7:39).  Wanted 10 up Provo Canyon and then MP down.  Told myself that if I could hit this workout then I would really consider DesNews (I was already considering it).

Took my time up the canyon and hit 10 in 1:25:25 (8:32 pace).  Mark was with me up until 7.50 and then he turned back. South Fork is a beast to climb, but I just took my time.  Stomach problems and hit the bathroom two separate times on the way up.

Wanted to hit 6:40-6:55 on all 10 on the way back down. Splits: 6:38, 6:41, 6:44, 6:30, 6:58, 6:49, 6:43, 6:53, 6:35, 6:48 (1:07:25 total or 6:44 pace for the 10 coming back down).

I was skeptical that I could hit this workout after a crappy week of running, eating horribly, and having a bit of a cold.  But it went great for me this morning.  I was laboring at the end, but was so glad to hit my times.  But I'm still a bit undecided on DesNews.  I just don't know if I'm ready enough.

Later...Lifted and then did 15 min on the stationary bike and just a bit on the TM.

16.07

16.07 in 2:03:22 (7:41).  Started at 6 AM and went up and down Provo Canyon.  Took it easy going up (1:06:48 or 8:21 pace).  On the way back down I did 3 min on by 2 min off.  Started this at the 1:15:00 mark and did it the whole way down.  I wanted  the "ons" to be around MP (6:45ish) and the "offs" I just wanted to pull off the gas pedal.  Splits for the last 8 were: 7:56, 6:43, 6:53, 7:00, 6:52, 6:56, 6:49, 6:57.  Based off my splits I'm pretty sure my "ons" were a lot faster than MP, but oh well.  Good run for me and the only fuel I used were the water fountains along the trail.

I officially signed up for the DesNews marathon last night.  This next week I will be taking things easy and hopefully it will bring my legs around so that I will feel great for the marathon.  I don't know why I'm running this one again, but my whole goal is to finally conquer Foothill Blvd.  It has destroyed me the 2 times I've run this race.

First off, great workout! Your speed looks for canyon running.

Second, I think you can break the three hour mark. You know this course pretty well. Take the beginning easy like Allie was telling you. I'm looking forward to see how you do. It does take a long time to recover from that race, you really don't have anything to loose right? Go for it!

Third, I am injured! (Again, it's no suprise). It's something to do with my achilles. It's extremely tight and it hurts when I run and go up the stairs. Didn't you face this same problem about two years ago? I need advice. It's only been a week but I am starting to go crazy. I am willing to go the physical therapy route. I am just not sure if I am making a big deal out of this.

From Jeff L on Sat, Jul 16, 2011 at 23:18:18 from 74.81.227.108

Oh man, Bec. That just sucks that you are fighting another injury. You've had your fair share. You're right. I struggled with an achilles problem 2 years ago. I went the PT route and I was fine after about a month. I don't know if it was the fact that I hardly ran during that month or if it was what the PT did. I think a combo of both. Both times I've been hurt (achilles and knee) the PT used a cortizone patch on the area. He would apply it every time I saw him (about once a week) and my body seemed to respond best to this. He also gave me some stretches to do, but they weren't real aggressive...meaning that I didn't stretch the achilles hard or a lot. I also started wearing some heel inserts to help take pressure off the achilles. Lots of info, but your best bet may be to take some time off from running (easy to say, hard to do). Running sucks sometimes.

I'm excited for the marathon. I feel like I've put in the work and the miles. I'm at least going to give myself a shot at sub 3. We'll see how it goes.

From Bec on Mon, Jul 18, 2011 at 18:28:20 from 71.199.9.12

Thanks so much for the info. I have backed away from running all together and I am now just X-training. After this week I will go to the PT if it isn't going so well.

I have been watching your blog and you have been putting in tons of productive runs and miles. Best of luck to you! I won't be there, wish I could. Good luck!

This is for my own benefit.  I wanted to get a feel for where I was going into this marathon on Monday compared to my last 3 marathons where I ran all out.  This shows my weekly mileage for the 12 weeks leading up to the marathon.  Each of these cycles had several races.  I don't know if this cycle is good enough to go under 3 hours, but I think I've given myself as good a chance as ever and if I run a smart race.

A little disappointed with my last 5-6 miles, but this actually was a pretty fun race today.  Goal was to at least give myself a shot at the sub 3 hr mark, and I gave myself a shot, but just couldn't hold it.  This is probably pretty close to PR effort for me since my fastest is just over 3:03 at STG, but I'll keep working on it.

Splits: 6:24, 6:11, 6:16, 6:23, 7:09 (bathroom stop), 6:56, 7:31, 7:03, 6:23, 6:39, 6:21, 6:21, 6:18 (I believe Rob said we hit the halfway mark around 1:26:38), 6:39, 6:29, 13:39 (missed a marker), 7:20, 6:45, 7:29, 9:02 (ouch), 6:48, 8:28, 8:05, 8:25, 10:36

Started off easy and just trying to get into a rhythm.  Hit 5 in 32:25 (goal was 33:22).  This even included a bathroom break at the mile 5 marker.  One of my main goals for the race was to not fall off pace on the climb up Little Mountain, so I pushed it a bit.  Got up to the top and recovered a bit and then I was pretty much by myself coming down the mountain for a bit.  Right around the 8 mile marker I could hear someone from behind and it was Rob Murphy.  I knew he was planning on pacing a friend, so I was surprised to see him on his own.  I introduced myself and we ended up running together up through around mile 14.  Went through 10 in 1:06:59 (goal was about 1:06:45 but I wasn't worried).  Rob and I started clipping off some pretty good miles around 6:20 and this was by far the best part of the race for me. The miles flew by and Rob really gave me some good confidence and helped me more than he knew (thanks again Rob).  I felt good here.

We went through the half around 1:26:38 (goal was between 1:27:00 and 1:28:00) and I knew that I had at least given myself a shot at sub 3.  Right around 14 Rob pulled ahead and I was pretty much on my own.  I continued to put down some good splits until the last part of Wasatch.  The legs were feeling it pretty good.  I passed one guy at the end of this stretch, but then I was really all alone.  I hit mile 20 at 2:14:24 (goal was between 2:13:30 and 2:17:20) and I've really given myself a shot to hit the sub 3 now, but the doubts are setting it and I end up walking the uphill portion of foothill by Sunnyside (this 9:02 mile is hard to swallow).  Got passed by 3 people here over the next few miles.  I got one last good mile in coming down by Rice Eccles (6:48), but now my race is pretty much a run/walk.  I go through 22 in 2:30:15 and all I have to do is run 4.2 miles in just under 30 min, but I just didn't have it in me.

Struggled the last bit to finish, but ended up passing one guy around mile 25.  Overall, not too bad, and I'll keep trying to put in the training to eventually go below the 3 hour mark.  It'll come. I wonder if I should have tried to keep up with Rob once he broke away. It was great running with someone and it really helped in those middle miles.  I think I just got a bit scared that I wouldn't be able to hold up much longer.  I'm sure the legs will be sore, but more than anything I'm just tired.  I guess the good thing is that I seem to learn more after each marathon, but I just need to tweak some things going forward.

Great meeting you today Jeff. You were running really well. I know you will get that sub 3 hour time soon.

Sometimes walking is inevitable in a marathon, but the longer you can hold off the better.

From Tom on Mon, Jul 25, 2011 at 19:00:25 from 67.199.180.90

Great job Jeff! Even though the sub-3 didn't come today this race shows that you are headed right where you need to be to pull the sub-3 soon. I can't remember if you're doing SGM this year but if so I'm thinking this effort should likely get you the sub-3. I look forward to seeing you on the Provo river trail one of these Saturdays and maybe joining you for a few miles (if I can keep up!)

Mel & Bec-Thanks. I needed some of both of your speed during the last 5 miles.

Yeah, this is miserable.

I've thought a lot about our conversation running down the canyon and how you have just gotten faster and faster as you've gotten older. I've got to somehow follow your lead and lose about 15-20 lbs (not to mention I know that you train a ton). I'm sure that would help me a lot. You just glided away from me and made it look so easy when you broke away. I should have tried to stay with you as long as possible cause I think it would have helped me fight through some rough patches...that I eventually gave in to.

9th overall. 8th male (Mary Ann finished about 15-20 sec ahead of me).  Probably a PR effort for me (1:22:03 at Hobble Creek in 2009).

Started off and knew I wanted to hit low 6's for the first 3 and then in the 5's on mile 4 and was able to do so.  Felt really good and pretty smooth as we came out of South Fork and on to the trail.  From here to the start of the hill is my favorite part of the course and as we approached the hill it was pretty much me, Terry Bean, Mary Ann, and one other guy all within about 25-30 yds of each other.   We all pretty much stayed this way the rest of the race.  They didn't know it, but they were pulling me along pretty well.  I actually caught and passed Terry and the other guy at the bottom of the hill (maybe Mary Ann too), but then they all passed me back at the water station that came right under the bridge.

Still felt pretty good in these upper, middle miles, but the other 3 had gapped me a bit and were now all about 30 seconds ahead.  Started to fade just a bit in miles 11 and 12, but was still holding strong.  Relaxed a bit and was able to hold it together really well on the last mile and into the finish.

This was a great race for me.  Maybe all the training is paying off a bit.  I ran this race in over 1:25:00 last year and over 1:24:00 the year before.  I was so happy to not drop off and let my times creep up in those last few miles.  Just felt really good overall throughout the race.

Added on 5 miles at the end.  Still debating what to do next: Pocatello full or half, Mid-Mountain Marathon, or TOU Marathon.  Need to decide this week probably.

taking it easy for a few days is a good plan.

Yeah, I love running up that way, but it's all torn up now days....and it takes me 5 miles to get there. When you get a minute, I would love your opinion on the best way to attack the TOU marathon course. I've probably asked you this before. I was pretty aggressive last year the first half (just under 1:26ish) and I think it came back to hurt me later on. I seem to really struggle when the course winds around the city. That being said, I feel really good about my training now and if I run a smart race there is no reason why I shouldn't be able to come in around the 3 hr mark. Would love to hear your advice.

Hey Jeff, good luck to you too. I'm not really sure where my race fitness is right now and whether I'm mentally up to run a great race. We'll see I guess. I ran this race last year though and was really impressed with the organization and enthusiasm.

Race: Pocatello Half Marathon (13.1 Miles) 01:24:23, Place overall: 7, Place in age division: 1
Total Distance
15.50

Pocatello half today.  My bro did the full (3:09ish which is an awesome time).  I'm very happy with my race today.  This is probably my best effort on a half since this is a very legit course in comparison to my 1:22 Hobble Creek or 1:23 at Provo River.  Lots of rollers through the middle miles with a couple of pretty good climbs and a lot of what seemed like long flat stretches.  I held things together very well throughout the race even when I didn't feel good and then was able to push it pretty good at the end.  Very good confidence builder for TOU in two weeks.  Splits:

1 6:02

2 6:17     12:19

3 6:34     18:53 A little climb right here

4 6:40     25:34

5 6:20     31:54

6 6:16     38:11

7 6:22     44:34

8 6:52     51:26 This was the big climb I believe.

9 6:41     58:07 Got passed by a guy here who was flying. He finished about 1 min ahead.

10 6:29   1:04:36

11 6:21    1:10:58

12 6:24    1:17:23

13 6:09   1:23:33

0.1 0:49   1:24:23

Cooled down for a couple miles after.  Got to meet Jeff Shadley from the blog and talked with him and Rob for a bit. They are fast. Overall, a very good race for me like I mentioned and hope that I will be able to build off of it for TOU.

I dare say that there aren't many people that crossed the finish line today that are happier than me.  Every time I think about the race I just smile.  I'm ecstatic about how things played out.  I overcame some physical and mental battles during the race that I've never come close to getting through during a marathon.  The goal was sub 3.  I didn't care if it was 2:59:59 (and it was close), but I wanted to break it.  I've raced and trained great over the last couple months and I felt like this was the best, legitimate chance I had given myself to hit the goal.  I knew I couldn't give in and walk around the 20 mile mark and I knew I had to stay strong the entire way or else it wouldn't happen.  I didn't want to get sucked into anybody else's race or pace, so I planned to just run according to the chart that Paul P. had created and try and just hit an even effort.  It was sprinkling a bit while we waited for the race to start, and then once everybody dropped their clothes into the bus, it started pouring for a few minutes.  Luckily it let up right before the start, but the rain was coming down hard off and on throughout the race, especially in the canyon.

1 6:37

2 6:34     13:11

3 6:33     19:45

4 6:40     26:26

5 6:36     33:02  The goal here was 33:44.  There is a group of about 7 or 8 of us that are running with the 3 hour pacers (there were 2 of them).  My legs don't feel great here, but I'm doing okay.  It is raining off and on.

6 7:14     40:16 I adjusted my watch here to go from auto lap to manual.

7 6:50     47:07

8 6:42     53:49

9 6:53     1:00:43

10 6:54   1:07:37 The goal here was 1:07:52.  It is right around in here that I start wondering if I should pick it up a bit, because I felt like I was holding back and I was scared I wasn't going to bank enough time for the last part of the course.  Still in our pack of about 7 to 8.  Being with the group helped a ton.  The pacers planned to hit the half around 1:28:00 to 1:29:00.

11 6:52   1:14:29

12 6:47   1:21:17

13-14 13:30     1:34:47  The goal was 1:28:56, and we crossed the half in about 1:28:40ish.  I'll admit, I was worried about hitting the sub 3 mark at this point.  I'm still feeling good though and pretty relaxed.  Our group is still intact.  There was not much of a tail wind coming out of the canyon, and I remember that it poured rain right in here and it started hailing.  My shoes were so water logged, but at least the temps were cool.  One of my favorite parts of this race is when you see all the spectators at the mouth of the canyon.  It was great.

15 6:47   1:41:34 The goal was 1:41:33.  The course seems to flatten out a lot here and this is where one of the pacers fell off pace and it felt like the other pacer picked it up.

16 6:46   1:48:21

17 6:40   1:55:01 Right around in here our group is pretty much down to the one pacer, 3 other guys and me.

18 6:47   2:01:49

19-20 14:02     2:15:52  The goal at 20 was 2:16:27, so I gained a bit of time in here.  We lose one guy off the group here.  I'm having some bad stretches in here, but I just keep trying to work through them.  Getting through the uphill sections and staying on pace is giving me confidence.  The hard part is that I stop at the aid stations and the others in the group gap me a bit....but I keep catching up to them.

21 6:53   2:22:45

22-23 14:20     2:37:06  I fell about 10-15 yards back in here, but right around mile 23 I catch up to the pacer and the other 2 guys and I start to feel good.  The pacer and I gap the other 2 guys and we start pulling ahead by quite a bit.  We start passing people.  I'm dying in stretches in here and I'm starting to talk to the pacer to help me keep going.

24 7:01   2:44:07 We got a little downhill in here and it helped a ton.  I take the water and gatorade on the run at this station and we pass one more guy right after the 24 mile mark.  Feeling good......then feeling bad.  Good, then bad.

25 7:03   2:51:10  The goal here was 2:51:26.  I gap the pacer by about 10 yards (I was feeling good for a bit) and I get up the uphill portion and I'm still feeling good.  I take the next water station on the fly and I think I've got the sub 3 in the bag.

26 7:05   2:58:16  Interesting thing happens here.  We round a couple of corners and start on the street behind the tabernacle.  I start to feel real bad and the pacer catches up.  We talk for a bit and I tell him I want to walk so bad.  He gaps me a bit and is still ahead of on the 2nd to last turn by about 5 yards.  I've been looking at my watch a lot for the last bit now and I can tell it is going to be so close.

0.2 1:26  1:26 We round the last corner here and the pacer slows down a bit (he let me finish ahead of him).  The last stretch here was awesome.  I knew I had to push it.  It was cool to have everybody screaming.  My bro. was yelling like crazy to push it.  Awesome, awesome feeling to get in just below the 3 mark.

If you can't tell, I'm really happy with this race.  The pacer helped me a ton over the last 4-5 miles.  It made a huge difference.  i couldn't believe that I stayed with him, and that I was the only one that stayed with him.  This is about a 3:25 PR (St. George 2009 3:03:03).  The conditions had me worried.  I wasn't sure how the rain would affect me.  Maybe it slowed me down, but it helped keep things very cool.  Funny how the doubts started creeping in over the last few days, and I never would have thought I could pull off the second half of this race as good as I did.  Overall, just a great experience today.

Im glad the pacing helped. I was a pacer for 3:10 and crossed the finish line all by myslef. It made me wonder if I had failed as the pacer, even though I was 11 seconds under 3:10. Awesome job on keeping with the pacer and not giving into walking at the end.

I haven't done any exercising since the marathon, and I've actually enjoyed it.  Its been a good way to reenergize myself and I'm now getting anxious to get out and put some miles in.  I think I will do some easy miles starting tomorrow.  This has probably been the least sore I've been after a marathon.  I'm nowhere near as bad as I was after DesNews or even after some of the downhill half marathons that I've done.

From Jeff L on Thu, Oct 20, 2011 at 09:39:17 from 74.81.227.108

Hey Allie. I really like it so far. It's tough right now cause I'm having to fight through the soreness and tiredness that comes along with the beginning of lifting. It's nice having people there who explain and help you with the exercises and I think it will help me a lot if I stick with it over these winter months, which is what I'm planning to do.

Race: Halloween Half Marathon (13.1 Miles) 01:23:22
Total Distance
13.10

Accidentally tapered for this race during this last week.  Just didn't get much running in.  My running has not been stellar over the last few weeks due to the change in weather and starting up with Crossfit.  I was pretty interested to see how things would go today and actually came away surprised.  This is the best I've run this race out of the three times (and this will be my last time) I've run it.  It was hectic, but I had two brothers and a sister-in-law running and I just wanted to relax and have a good time.....and I did have a good time.  Felt good to try and run fast for the first time in a while.

1 6:04

2 5:54

3 6:00

4 6:11

5 6:13 Really tried to take it easy in these first miles.  Couldn't feel my toes for the first 4 miles.  Started running with a guy name Bill Hiatt ?? around the mile 4 mark.  We chatted a bit and the next few miles flew right by.  The downhill was rough on the quads, but this is a pretty part of the run.  Started back a bit, so I got to pass quite a few people.

6 6:44

7 6:41 Hmmm.  Not sure what happened here in these last two miles.  I did stop and walk through some aid stations.

8 6:23

9 6:37

10 6:20

11 6:34 Felt like I was running in quicksand on the little section coming out of Timp. park.

12 6:20 Got passed by a girl who was really flying.

13 6:33

0.1 0:42

Like I mentioned, I was pleasantly surprised that I held up as good as I did.  Enjoyed running down the canyon (this is my favorite place to run) and got a good workout.  Hoping the damage is minimal over the next few days.  This race may cost me both of my middle toenails and I'm hoping the quads aren't too destroyed next week.  Looking to really hit Crossfit hard the next few weeks and run when I feel like it.  We will see how that goes.

From Jeff L on Sun, Oct 30, 2011 at 15:12:46 from 74.81.227.108

Rob-the chaos and confusion combined with the extreme downhill at the beginning just turn me off...but I will probably end up running it next year. BTW nice job pacing. That sounds fun. As we ramp up training next year we should do some running together. We can't be too far away since we both live in Lehi. Although I don't know if I could keep up with you.

des news sore? i feel like if i would have raced that hard i would have destroyed my quads similar to des news. so steep!

glad you could get a bit of running in today.

From Jeff L on Fri, Nov 04, 2011 at 08:39:13 from 74.81.227.108

In the ball park with Des News, but not quite as bad. Certainly similar to Hobble Creek or A.F. Half. I don't think that race was worth the soreness. I couldn't believe that my quads started hurting after only half a mile.

10.0 in 1:20:42 (8:04).  Started just after 5:30 AM.  Wasn't sure how the weather would be, but it snowed lightly pretty much the whole time and there was a nasty wind from the north.  It was bearable and certainly could have been worse.  Because of the weather and because I wasn't sure how I would feel, I decided to do 3 loops of the following: South on 500 W until it T's.  West to 1100 W.  North to 700 S.  East to 500 W.  Added a bit on the last loop to get to 10.  Based on my pace and how my legs feel, I am still not recovered from that race last week.  I was glad I braved the weather and got out though.

Crossfit.  Warmup and then 3 min of the following:  rowing, push presses (65 lbs), sit ups.  1 minute break and then 2 min of the same thing.  1 min break and then 1 min of the same thing.  Pretty good workout.

How are you doing Jeff? Do you like Crossfit? They offer classes at my gym but I am too scared to go... Is it a good mix up from running? Do you feel like it burns enough calories? Just wondering.

From Jeff L on Mon, Nov 28, 2011 at 22:11:13 from 74.81.227.108

Hey Bec. First off, congrats on the wedding. Hope all is well with you and David down in TX. I actually really like Crossfit. I know that each Crossfit location can be a bit different based on the instructor, but I really like the one here in Lehi. My running has obviously dropped, but I expected that and I still try to get 30-40 miles in a week. Crossfit works your core and your legs like crazy, plus they have somebody there to teach you how to do things, which makes it a less intimidating. I'm doing lifts that I've never done before. The down side is that it is a bit pricey. Based on what I know about you, I think you would love it, especially if you could still get some extra cardio in. I would be surprised if they didn't let you come try it for a couple of days to see if you like it.

From Bec on Tue, Nov 29, 2011 at 10:41:44 from 68.206.133.141

Thanks for for the congrats! We like Texas, it's warm here. :)

Ok, I will make a goal to attend crossfit after the half marathon I do next week. Sounds like you are enjoying it as well as benefiting from the workouts. Something that is nice about it here is that we don't have to pay for it. We live on base so it's free to military and their families. Otherwise, I don't think that I would consider it.

What's up Allie? I actually really like it. It's been almost two months since I started and I can certainly tell a difference. Obviously my running has suffered, but I expected that. I'm hoping to start ramping up the mileage come January in prep. for Boston. Nice running for you lately. We need warmer weather.
